This game has the basics down with good gameplay and excellent controls. What it's missing is the icing; the graphics and sound to back up that gameplay.
-
A thoughtfully designed, complex, and pretty fun game to play. Alas, a dearth of supplemental features and some flimsy presentation drag down what could have been a more solid overall package.
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineSince Extinction requires so little in the way of actual strategy, it probably deserves the title of "RTS Lite" more than "Army Men RTS" ever did... Don't expect anything too terribly deep and you won't be disappointed. [Sept 2003, p.92]
-
PSM MagazineIt's a bit on the ugly side, but its single player missions are solid and the races are vastly different. [Sept 2003, p.38]
-
APE is quite tactical, the control is good and it should keep fans interested, even with the fog-of-war, funnel levels, and pathfinding problems - a good RTS entry.
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyThere's entertainment to be had with Extinction, but expect a lot of hair-pulling to go along with it. [Sept 2003, p.116]
-
Game InformerYou'll miss things like camera control, intelligent AI, and set battle formations for your units. Also frustrating is the fact that you don't carry over supplies or accomplishments from mission to mission. [Aug 2003, p.89]
-
The console controls just dont work well for this kind of game, and not having the ability to pause during a battle and order set jobs to be done really caused some frustration and just seemed like autopilot fighting until one group was dead.
-
A combination of terribly poor A.I. and boring mission design. There are only a few must-have units for each side, and balance between the races is way off.
-
Thanks to good controls and a truly imaginative take on the AvP universe, Extinction turns out better than expected. You can tell the developers really loved the movies. It's just too bad they didn't take it far enough as a game, serving up a short campaign and failing to offer any extra modes.
