This a review based on the PC released version, with patch 501 after 35 hours of play (finished). The game is a console port that was poorly done. Problems with controller, crashing issues. Which speaks loudly about the quality of the PC port... Graphically Ys 8 is at the level of a PS3 game. The anime movies and illustrations are a nice touch. I wish they were more... The textures are fine in general, but the polygons are somewhat low on the levels. The vegetation is rather decent. The story starts very slowly but gets more interesting with time. A bit too complex for a younger audience, it's more for 14-15+ years old. You have concept of death, reality of existence and time travel. The ending was kind of sad but pretty good in it's own way. Combat is simple and revolve on mashing and special attacks. Minor strategy could be involved at times, but nothing fancy. A proper way to defend your character is missing. The voice over are very well done and the textual translation spot on. Now some peoples might be offended by the fact the Dana has nipples when all the other women don't. It is obvious it was to please the crowd of young gaming men. You be your own judge about that, the game doesn't focus on that aspect but it can be distracting at times. The game still crash from time to time. I hardly understand why they have release it like this, and at a 66$ value, when clearly they are gonna refund a lot of peoples. The game is really good and should be a 75%. I give it a 60%. Wait until they fix their bugs if you think of buying it. Expand

This is my first time playing a "Ys" title and I am fairly impressed by what a small budget can do. The combat is fun because the prospect of getting loot is engaging. In this regard it feels like a poor man's "Monster Hunter". The plot is really cool and gets entertaining at times. There is a ton of things to collect and a good amount of them don't feel useless. In this regard it feels like a poor man's "Monster Hunter". The plot is really cool and gets entertaining at times. There is a ton of things to collect and a good amount of them don't feel useless. The biggest problem with the game is the protagonist, you could replace him with a wooden board and people might not notice. I get that he is virtually a silent protagonist, but this just doesn't work in this game. I think its too much story, too much banter, too many characters. Even the most pedestrian background character has more personality than our main hero. He is also an ultra Mary Sue, no, Mary Sue is flawed compared to Adol. I don't usually get hung up on story, because gameplay is the most important thing for me. I just can't help but to feel cheated because how dreadful Adol is. If there was a mod to let you play in first person and never see him, it might be better, but for sure you wouldn't miss him. Since this is a lengthy RPG, characters are extremely important and our protagonist is nauseatingly bad. Its like some sort of sick joke.

The game pushes some kind of love attempt very early on between the main character and the main girl. Nothing happens, nothing happens, the girl once or twice hints that she is into him. That is it, that is all, he never does. In fact you get flirty dialogue a few times with other NPCs that also goes nowhere. No, this game was really hurt by the dummy we got for main character. Other than that, I still recommend the game. The story will get you at times and you will want to know more. But it does drag with far too many cutscenes. It really tries to be FFX but the generic version. So if you can get it on a sale, then definitely go for it. Its a 50 hour campaign and I don't regret playing it.

It’s a satisfying RPG with a steady pace and great gameplay. There are also plenty of sidequests if you want to pursue them, but it’s optional. One thing I really like are the raids which will happen on your little castaway village. These happen throughout the game and you can choose to participate in defending everyone from a monster raid. They’re also good for friendly competition with Dogi, and if there’s one thing I think Ys VIII does really well it’s things like this that keep things from ever getting too serious.

Ys VIII is a fantastic action RPG with interesting characters and an intriguing story, which provides countless hours of exploration and banter.

Seriously? We had to wait for the PC port this long? With bugs and technical problems the once very good action roleplaying game is reduced to a meager shell.
