I'm just going to ignore the extreme failure of this NISA port and just pray they never get their filthy hands on another Ys title. After being extremely let down, hoping to play this over Christmas break 2017, we finally managed to receive the port, and about 3 months after release it became playable for me. Despite that, it's clearly the best title in the series and does so much right, it's not fair to the game to let the darkness of NISA cloud it any longer.

Story: It's interesting but may appear to be very generic if you haven't played earlier Ys games, there's a host of nods and winks that it's hard to appreciate without knowing some of the lore, but for the most part it's very subtle. If you're in it for the story, there's enough bing bing wahoo! to keep you hooked, just enough mystery to push you forward, in fact the pacing is excellent, particularly for people who like to take it slow and conquer all of the side quests and exploration aspects.

Gameplay: Combat is kind of like Tales of meets Dragon Quest Heroes, but enough uniqueness that keeps it fresh just long enough to not get too bored with it. Boss battles are epic but unfortunately felt dumbed down from previous titles. Baddies aren't scaled, they're confined to regions, which has its pro's and con's. It's thankfully fast paced but loot feels a little underwhelming.

Music: One of the better aspects of the game, it really works with the fast pace of the action and the flow of the story.

At the end of the day, there is just so much more that could have been done with it. I like Ys as a series very much, but this is undoubtedly a transition title. It felt like they wanted to keep the original feel and yet experiment with a bit more openness, a world that felt a little more lived in (despite the obvious setting of the island), a more robust experience. I can't really say if it exceeded fully, but it did succeed in making me very excited for the next Ys title.

I have played a couple of Ys games before and this is simply the best title in series and may be the best RPG of 2017. Pleasant graphics, nice music, enjoyable story and game play, overall good quality. It seems that patches have done their work, not a single crash during my game.

In short, one of the best role-playing games of all time, which unfortunately doesn't open up right from the start. Awesome combat, a dash of Zelda, and a heart-pounding story....what more could a role-player's heart desire?

I really love Ys VIII, is a really damn good action RPG which, being from the Ys series, isn't hard to accomplish, because most of them are really good action RPGs, so it was expected that Lacrimosa of Dana ended up being decent too, really.

I really love Ys VIII, is a really damn good action RPG which, being from the Ys series, isn't hard to accomplish, because most of them are really good action RPGs, so it was expected that Lacrimosa of Dana ended up being decent too, really.

Quick disclaimer, I had this game for a while, but didn't get to live those early times when the game was kinda a mediocre PC port. I had other games to play so I got this one immediately after NISA announced that Durante was in charge of bringing the very necessary fixes to this great game. I'm a simple PC RPG enjoyer, I see Durante, I purchase, it is what it is : ) Gotta love those excellent Trails of Cold Steel ports, so when I saw he was in charge of the revamp, no brainer, had to get it.

So yeah, basically I got to play the very much improved and possibly current best version of this game.

That aside, I am completely amazed that this game was also on the PS Vita. Surely, you can see in the way the levels and areas are designed, that they had to make them fit into the Vita's memory constraints, but still, it's an impressively huge game, I found the areas to be a perfect balance of places to explore and not too huge that I get bored of running around.

The setting is quite varied too, being an island, you would think it could get boring fast, but it doesn't, anyone who's played other games in the series can understand this, there are lots of places to explore, big outdoor areas, nice indoor dungeons, and some really exotic and weird places too, as usual.

With a modern PC, mine running a Ryzen 5 3600 and Geforce RTX 3060 Ti, this game is pretty easy to drive at 1080p (my native resolution), all settings maxed, and also using Super Sampling Anti-Aliasing at Ultra (which is 4x times the pixels, therefore a 4K resolution), while at the same time also using the official HD Texture pack that was released for free.

Playing at 120 FPS is quite possible at these settings, but I decided to settle for a 60 FPS cap, to save unnecessary GPU load, and because I read online that very high FPS can make the game not calculate damage in a "fair" way, especially making the player do extra hits, so yeah since the game runs fine at 60 (also on a Gsync screen) well, it was a perfect 60 FPS all the time.

I really liked the story quite a lot, despite being quite disconnected from the overall Ys series lore, so I guess if you're an Ys purist when it comes to lore, well this one is one of those games to simply play because of the smooth action combat.

And yeah, the combat is pretty good, of course it's not Devil May Cry 5 levels, but if you know the Ys series, I can say that Lacrimosa has one of the most fun and engaging combat models in the series, as it's a refinement of the one present in Seven, the first game that used this "party system", and then Celceta's.

So yeah, the game is pretty fast paced, combat is super smooth, and still quite challenging at times.

Controls are very responsive, both with Gamepad and Keyboard and Mouse (I honestly played for a whole day with KB&M and it's really fun too, and easy to adapt to), but my most time played was with a Dualshock 4, just a matter of preference, but know that Mouse and Keyboard is fine, as it has been in most past games in the series.

Overall, it's a bit sad to see so few reviews here for the PC version, because it's the best version of this game, at least when it comes to settings, performance and visuals.

With Ys IX Monstrum Nox coming soon, it was appropriate for me to finally leave a review here.
I know it's not really necessary to play this one before Ys IX (well, I have a feeling) but, you know, if you were on the fence with this one, or if you're new to the series, Lacrimosa of Dana is a very good Ys game to get you interested in some of the core mechanics of the most modern titles in the series.

It also helps a lot that the next game, Ys IX, already has a playable demo on PC, where you can see that most of the great Graphics Settings from Lacrimosa, will come back for the new game, as Durante and his team are, once again, in charge of the port, this time from day one, so that's great news.

Ys VIII is a marvelous game that will make you want to explore and discover all of the island mysteries over the course of the main game. The gameplay is fluid and fast paced as expected of an Ys game. The soundtrack is amazing as always thanks to Falcom Sound Team jdk. Don't be fooled by the other reviews, the PC port is excellent and I never crashed once during the entire playthrough.

Good story, great cast, and excellent gameplay. Got the true ending in one go, and while it wasn't hard by any means, is definitely the ending the shoot for. Looking forward to the next one. Just please make the ports of future games better next time. I can see where the complaints are coming from. I also hope newer titles go for a more improved artsyle, or showcase better graphics overall. The opportunity is there. They should take it.

Which speaks loudly about the quality of the PC port... Graphically Ys 8 is at the level of a PS3 game. The anime movies and illustrations are a nice touch. I wish they were more... The textures are fine in general, but the polygons are somewhat low on the levels. The vegetation is rather decent. The story starts very slowly but gets more interesting with time. A bit too complex for a younger audience, it's more for 14-15+ years old. You have concept of death, reality of existence and time travel. The ending was kind of sad but pretty good in it's own way. Combat is simple and revolve on mashing and special attacks. Minor strategy could be involved at times, but nothing fancy. A proper way to defend your character is missing. The voice over are very well done and the textual translation spot on. Now some peoples might be offended by the fact the Dana has nipples when all the other women don't. It is obvious it was to please the crowd of young gaming men. You be your own judge about that, the game doesn't focus on that aspect but it can be distracting at times. The game still crash from time to time. I hardly understand why they have release it like this, and at a 66$ value, when clearly they are gonna refund a lot of peoples. The game is really good and should be a 75%. I give it a 60%. Wait until they fix their bugs if you think of buying it. Expand

I cannot even begin to describe how bad this port is. It crashes so often that it takes an ungodly amount of patience to actually play enough to write a review. I've tried on multiple computers with varying AMD and Intel setups and the results are generally the same. Crashes, crashes and more crashes. The best luck I had was on an old AMD FX system paired a GTX 1050 TI. With that setup I've managed to play about 42 hours in the game so far. (Still crashing but far less frequently, about an hour or three between crashes).

All in all play it on the PS4 but STAY AWAY from the PC port until they get all the issues patched out. Give them year or so.

A quite forgettable story, major plot points that don't make sense at the end, a final boss that you get to know right at the last battle, unnecessary fan-service (why do they show so much skin, including the kid?), way too long for an uninteresting story.

I had some fun for the first few hours as the idea was good. Couldn't help but feel it was implemented poorly at the end. Well that was my first Ys game and likely last.

First of all, the story is amazing, I would have been perfectly fine with it just being an attempt to escape from the island... but it throws an insane twist in the middle of it which adds a new level of intrigue that hooked me even further.

I have a fine motor skills disability and cannot use controllers that well, at least the joystick elements. They put a lot of time and effort into the mouse and keyboard controls, to fine tune them to be an amazing experience. I tried to use controller with it afterwards, and find I can dash and dodge faster, and easier, with mouse and keyboard, than with controller... Mind you this is actually a technical limitation for the controller itself. To dash you have to press a button related to running/walking, while moving. On pc I can just press right click and dash around while pressing wsad, making movement through the island a lot easier. Also in order to use special attacks on controller, you have to hold down one of the triggers and press a, b, x, or y to use them, on pc you just press 1-4, which are located conveniently above the 'w' key. The fact that they put this amount of time and effort to make pc controls actually good, should speak wonders to this specific version of the game.

The visuals are very nice as well, they arent 100% up to date, though, which is why my score is at a 9. They look good, but you can clearly see some polygons and slightly lower resolution textures. These are easy to overlook as the island is crafted beautifully and the action will keep you pushing forward, instead of staring at a rock the entire time.

I have always loved ys games, and would advocate them above final fantasy, and this one is no exception! There are going to be a lot of low review scores for it. The games launch on pc wasnt a very smooth one. They delayed the game, at the last second, twice! When it did end up coming out, it was extreme buggy, and would crash often for a lot of people. With the exception of a flickering light issue in two areas, I didn't encounter any bugs, or crashes in the game, so my experience was a bit more pleasing than most peoples. The bugs have been worked out at this point, so there is no reason not to get it on pc. Also, this is prob one of my favorite games of all time, at least in the top 10... pick it up if its on sale on steam, if you have any doubts, I couldn't recommend it more!

The biggest problem with the game is the protagonist, you could replace him with a wooden board and people might not notice. I get that he is virtually a silent protagonist, but this just doesn't work in this game. I think its too much story, too much banter, too many characters. Even the most pedestrian background character has more personality than our main hero. He is also an ultra Mary Sue, no, Mary Sue is flawed compared to Adol. I don't usually get hung up on story, because gameplay is the most important thing for me. I just can't help but to feel cheated because how dreadful Adol is. If there was a mod to let you play in first person and never see him, it might be better, but for sure you wouldn't miss him. Since this is a lengthy RPG, characters are extremely important and our protagonist is nauseatingly bad. Its like some sort of sick joke.

The game pushes some kind of love attempt very early on between the main character and the main girl. Nothing happens, nothing happens, the girl once or twice hints that she is into him. That is it, that is all, he never does. In fact you get flirty dialogue a few times with other NPCs that also goes nowhere. No, this game was really hurt by the dummy we got for main character. Other than that, I still recommend the game. The story will get you at times and you will want to know more. But it does drag with far too many cutscenes. It really tries to be FFX but the generic version. So if you can get it on a sale, then definitely go for it. Its a 50 hour campaign and I don't regret playing it.

It doesn’t really offer anything new or shake things up, but what it does is take those common elements of a JRPG and refine them a bit: simple but fluid and fun combat, cool looking abilities, crafting, a good variety of enemies and bosses; ya know, the usual; but what’s pretty neat is that part of the gameplay is Metroidvania-esque. The cherry on top for me are the characters; it does a pretty good job of fleshing each and every one of them out. The story was a bit simple and nothing to write home about, but it does a decent enough job to keep you coming back.
For the cons, my biggest headache was navigating the map, and performance issues in certain areas. I have some other small complaints, but that’s pretty much it.

Yeah, I really enjoyed Ys VIII. Nothing about it was overly complex or convoluted, and I’d like to think that its simplicity worked in its favor. I had a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to playing some of the older games. Thumbs up from me!

It’s a satisfying RPG with a steady pace and great gameplay. There are also plenty of sidequests if you want to pursue them, but it’s optional. One thing I really like are the raids which will happen on your little castaway village. These happen throughout the game and you can choose to participate in defending everyone from a monster raid. They’re also good for friendly competition with Dogi, and if there’s one thing I think Ys VIII does really well it’s things like this that keep things from ever getting too serious.
