I've been playing World of Warships since it went into open beta in 2015. Prior to this I played World of Tanks so this wasn't my first Wargaming.net game.

If you've played World of Tanks you'll know how unforgiving that game is. Make one mistake and that's it, game over. World of Warships is slower paced and gives you time to think ahead and be much more deliberate in your gameplay.

If you've played World of Tanks you'll know how unforgiving that game is. Make one mistake and that's it, game over. World of Warships is slower paced and gives you time to think ahead and be much more deliberate in your gameplay. Mistakes are punished, but generally you don't die from three or four hits as you do in World of Tanks.

The grind is much less painful, and the use of premium camos and signals allows you to move up the tech trees far more quicker than in World of Tanks, but just like that game, at higher tiers the ships and upgrades become very expensive and you'll run short of credits if you're not running a premium account or have some high tier premium ships for grinding credits.

Wargaming apparently learned their lesson with this game and didn't include premium ammunition. In fact, there are no ammunition costs in this game.

The rock-paper-scissors interaction between the ship classes *was* very good. I say was because that was up until the recent aircraft carrier rework. Right now high tier games are blighted by the aircraft carriers which are simply too overpowered and have completely overturned the established game meta. A carrier can spot you seconds after the match starts, this is especially bad for destroyers. If the carrier then decides to focus you there is pretty much nothing you can do about it. There is no effective counter play for a carrier with a hard on for your ship. Anti-aircraft fire was also reworked for the new carriers and has recently been shown to be working very poorly - there are very few ships which can put up an effective defence against air attack. Right now if you get into a match with two tier 10 carriers on the other team (which unfortunately happens far too often) you're going to have a pretty miserable experience whether you're in a battleship, cruiser or destroyer.

I'm also slightly concerned with Wargaming's trademark Russian bias creeping in. Russian battleships have only been in the game for a matter of weeks and they're just about to get a second tier 10 battleship (which no other nation has). Of the two tier 10 battleships they have access to one will be the most tanky and well protected battleship in the game, the other will have the most accurate long range guns and best anti-aircraft guns in the game. World of Tanks is already massively effected by this Russian bias, please don't let it creep into World of Warships!

The in-game chat is also far less toxic than in World of Tanks. You will still find abusive team mates, but it's much less frequent than in World of Tanks.

I'd give the game a solid 8 before the recent carrier rework. I've gone with a seven because there's still time to save it... if the developers double down and keep the totally unbalanced carrier class as it is now I'd give it a 5.

Very fun game, the grinding is kinda annoying but isn't that bad.
But if you ant into warships or navel warfare this game isn't something for you.

    My rating: a 6

impossibly long super grind not feasible without exp and credit boosts. At the end you will realise you need to pay more than $100 for a single ship which is about the price of a premium ship anyway.

The game play is unbalanced, pretty stale, not much variety. A lot of patience needed.

    Absolutely not worth your time.

Good game. Its like a shooter, but you will also have to worry about positioning your ship and steering it. Ships are not as easy to control compared to a character in your regular shooter.

Its incredibly grindy, especially if your shooting skills are poor. You will find yourself unable to progress.

The seas and explosions are solid.

    Matchmaking is very decent.

Another developer who is too unable to use the options provided by Steam. A direct account link without nickname / profile change or new creation has been possible for years and is used by thousands of games, only Wargaming does not integrate or use the mighty power of Steam.

I can recommend the game in RETAIL but not the miserable Steam Integration which is really embarrassing for

But there are also a lot of bugs, the MM was only improved in 2019, let's see how it goes now.

The autopilot is e.g. still bugy.

The punishment for friendly fire is also exaggerated, the system does not recognize whether someone was shot or rammed on purpose or unintentionally.

And Wargaming Support is incompetent and totally incapable.

The game was a pretty solid ship arcade game, and then they reworked the carriers and caused all kinds of new problems. It was ok-ish but then they started to go down the path of high hidden costs, exploitative psychological mechanics, power creep, and pay to win.

This Christmas, they intentionally make the "free" ship impossible to get, and anyone who spent money to boost this impossible task would eventually be confronted with wasting their money, or spending more to complete the task at the the risk of getting nothing.

It's the price of a AAA game for a single ship in this game, and now the T10 ships costing almost $300 in hidden, lure/bait based gating and hiding of true costs... this game is a mugger in an alley waiting to gank you for your money.

I would advice anyone to be very wary of spending a lot on this game without careful reading and extensive thoughts about the true hidden costs of purchases.

A good game at the start. I found few technical issues that were show stopping. Early ships are reasonably well balanced. Game play and winning is largely decided on by players and their tactics. Game play and winning is largely decided on by players and their tactics. Progression is relatively quick up to about level 5 ships. After level 5 it is a different game. Progression is extremely slow. Weeks playing a single ship before you can progress is typical. Ports and virtually every feature costs real money. To those who have every ship, they have spent several hundred dollars just to buy ports.

Premium ships are vastly superior to the regular ships. In every sense this is a p2w game. Thank the gods there are not many of them but faced with a team of premium ships tactics don't much matter.

While carriers add a dimension to the game they also distort the essence of play. Playing in a carrier is a different view even, like a map based tactical view, you are no longer in a ship. The airplanes can also rather easily spot destroyers highlighting them for cruisers and battleships to destroy. Even if there are no carriers in your game, prepare yourself, many battleships have planes and even cruisers. So by level 5 in a destroyer prepare to have games were you do ok, and other games where you die without getting a single shot on anything. So by level 5 or 6 playing a destroyer is unpleasant.

Quite often when I play my battleship, it is so slow I find the battle has already been decided before I can fire a single round. All my destroyers and cruisers rush forward, engage their mass of ships, get destroyed, and I am left with the carrier to die. Still haven't fire a shot. Not the fault of the game that my teams tactics are horrible, but that is typically what happens.

So you have decided the only thing to play is a cruiser. Jack of all trades. Maybe the only consistent and relatively decent ship class in the game.

No ability to put on ignore the children who play this game. I would say this alone makes the game loose a full point. Upgrading to a new ship is really annoying. They have made it so that an upgrade actually is worse than your current ship, all you have to do is upgrade everything about it to make it better. Transfer a captain from an old ship. Either pay to transfer him at no penalty or spend weeks with him penalized to incompetency before he understands how to make this new ship work. So pay, then pay, oh yeah new ship = new port so pay, then pay .... you get the picture.

My advice would be to play this game to level 4, enjoy it as much as you can, and don't plan on higher level ships, from level 5 ships on you will start to experience a very different game.

Time passer, gets boring quick. Pay to win, premium ships are indeed premium. Game mechanics stink. Had a round where I registered over 100 hits on one ship, no fire, no crits, no sink. For comparison I go down with an average of 5-15 impacts regularly. Fun to play with friends, but there are a lot of grind freemium games and this one doesn't stand out at all. It's an okay game, but the higher you go, the less fun you will have. It is certanly better than things like war thunders naval, but still annoying sometimes

They started adding HE spamming ships with such little Armour that you could barely scratch them because everything over penned. They added Russian battleships that were clearly better then all other nations with waterlines so low the ships would probably sink should they have ever been build. Then they added submarines with barely any counter play. They made it so everyone could play aircraft carriers no matter how brain dead they were.

The devs feel extremely disconnected with the player base and do the weirdest things imaginable.

For a free MMO, it’s technically proficient, looks great, and will provide a fun experience. Even though I couldn’t find myself getting into it, I definitely understand why it has the following it has.

Contrary to appearances, slower pace of combat never makes it boring. Successful hits from long distance are very satisfying, even after many hours. It's a pity that the micro-transactions system is not perfect.

A unique and satisfying bit of seafaring, with enough depth to rival the Atlantic. [Dec 2015, p.83]
