There are several main features of this expansion: covenants, maw, torghast.

Answer is simple, this covenant is useful for that class while Necrolords and Revendreth useless if we are taking into account PvE content of SL. So, u cant select a covenant, which you like, if you have plans on mythic+ high keys or myth raid. You should do what you must. Cannot say anything on account of PvP covenant decision, likely it won't coincide with best PvE covenant for class.
Covenant change hurts and throws your progress away.
The Maw is a piece of rock, rares and daily/weekly quests. No one can mount here for now. It s boring and hurts to be there. However, game designers intentionally wanted to make this location comfortless. But they made it unpleasant in a bad way: boring, unmountable, obligatory every day (if you aims progress). This place should be scary, thrilling, forcing players to move. But we have a slow walk on rocks to daily quests and rares.
I cant believe my own words, but visions of Orgrimmar or Stormwind were better.
Thorgast is pretty fun. It gives you opportunity to change your class and feel something new. However, some classes or specs may find it still hard to complete. For instance, shadow priests (if anima talents proced were bad). On the other hand DH in any spec, any anima talents feels good. Generally, Thorgast is ok or even good.
Levelling is good, quests are okay.
Plot is more surf than turf. Feels like a Disney tale.
Poor changes to classes, though 2 classes reworked, no new classes
Huge home town (Oribos), ONLY ONE mail box. Sorry Blizzard, little things make life better.
Easier to have multiple twinks than previous expansion.
Covenant zones and travelling between them looks fantastic.
Players face many bugs for now.
I have some huge plans an myth content. It requires to play covenant u must, visit maw every day, farm locals for anima (almost same as in every expansion, no imagination).
All in all it s 4/10 for me( maybe +1 bonus point for easier twink management). If my plans are not the same as yours, you wish only heroic raiding and 15-key as a highest closed myth+, you would likely rate this expansion as 6-8/10. If you have plans only for PvP content my review is useless for you.

Servers had issues like all MMO launchs. I am still faced up with maintences occasionally.
Game itself is excellent for MMO standarts, descent story, descent gear progression for both pvp and pve, weekly and not dailies quests and lots of optional and side things to do. I can see shadowlands as the next big wow expansion, completely worth your time and money.

    Worst WoW addon for sure.
All that casuals hate from Blizzard side, over the edge timegating everything, completely uninteresting plot so far and no unique features at all (Torghast is not a new feature, it's just the worst from mage tower + the worst from island expeditions)
1/10 just for awesome artwork and beautiful locations, as for the other things this expansion is trash

A proper RPG *SHOULD* have areas and monsters that are higher level - and stronger - than you, because later on you will be strong enough to face them, signifying your growth in power. Also, a proper RPG *SHOULD* have areas and monsters that fall behind you as you grow stronger. This game managed to balance that for years after classic, there's no reason it shouldn't be possible now.

The current team in charge of WoW have no idea what made this game great back in the good ol' days. All they have going for them is WoW's legacy - they couldn't make a decent MMORPG from scratch if their lives depended on it.

Shadowlands is a return to form for Blizzard’s Team 2.

Top-notch writing and story, excellent zone pacing and transitions, perfect balance of main story quests and side tasks, and an endgame chock-full of deep systems to enjoy.

The most fun new system WoW has ever introduced is Shadowlands marquis feature called Torghast, Tower of the Damned—a procedurally-generated “rogue-like” dungeon where you gain insane new powers and abilities as you climb consecutive levels of ever-increasing difficulty.

Even if Shadowlands had NO new features, almost every class (and every specialization within those classes) has been tweaked and given back fun abilities and skills that had been removed in previous expansions in the name of simplification. Some abilities are purely utility or damage-focused, while others simply bring consistency from a lore/RPG standpoint (such as all Mage specializations gaining Frostbolt, Arcane Blast, and Fireball; “Yes, I went to Mage School, but I *specialized* in Fire. Of course I know what a Frostbolt is!”).

So the base game is just fun to play. When the classes are enjoyable and unique, it elevates all the content within the game.

Crafting & Gathering Professions are finally a true market force yet again. I got that old-school RPG feeling when I realized just how many gear enchantments, potions, and usable items were available to “min/max” difficult content. Better than that, however, is the fact that many key progression systems rely on various professions, and high-end crafted products require multiple disparate professions’ output, meaning that the market must contend with itself from almost every aspect of the game. No single character can “do it all.” Players must rely on others (it is an MMO, afterall), OR have multiple alts with all of their professions maxed out (not ideal for one’s sanity, but some mad-lads do it anyway).

The graphics are gorgeous, the music is epic and inspiring, the lore is engaging and fascinating, the voice acting is charming, and the new zones are unique and thematically-perfect.

And once you get to max level, the fun has only just begun.

Luckily, unlike the previous two expansions (Legion in 2016 and Battle for Azeroth in 2018), the endgame content is tailor-fit to each player’s goals:

Players who only like PVP can just PVP, and they can finally (once again) target specific earned gear upgrades while remaining competitive with PVE gearing.

Players who love raiding can focus exclusively on raiding (once this first tier begins next week).

Players who just love dungeons can gear up exclusively with Legion’s most impactful new system, Mythic +, where you earn infinitely-harder versions of dungeons and enemy affixes based on your group’s performance in each run, and you get commiserate rewards. The dungeon design is fantastic as usual (there have been the occasional “duds” over the years, but high-quality dungeons and raids are typically a given for the Warcraft team at this point).

Players who love all 3 main endgame gearing paths are rewarded with MUCH faster and specified gear upgrade acquisition than those who only do one form of content.

Players who couldn’t care less about those 3 pillars of competitive endgame progression have LOADS of fun tertiary gameplay to enjoy: Gorgeous new mounts and transmogs (armor and weapon appearances), titles, pets, gold, extreme achievements, and a dearth of open-world systemic upgrades via the new Covenant system, whereby each player chooses one of four themed factions to fight for, represent, and build up their base of operations.

Blizzard ensured that you can enjoy endgame content endlessly without feeling pressure to constantly grind if you don’t want to or don’t have time to. Each player power progression system is inherently limited/capped to specific benchmarks each week, so once you do what you feel like doing, you’re done for the week. Don’t care about a specific kind of content? No need to do it. And if you change your mind, you can catch up on almost everything later when you DO have time or if you suddenly gain an interest in other endgame content. For players who want to stay competitive in endgame combat content (player power for raids, dungeons, and PVP), there’s very little *mandatory* tasks to complete periodically:

    1) Earn as much from Torghast as possible each week, up to a very reasonable limit (for materials to build your own personal Legendary item).

    2) Do each week’s Covenant quests to earn new buffs to your abilities and open world hub.

And that’s pretty much it. The rest is up to you. This has been one of the best launches of an expansion pack that WoW has ever had, and I can’t wait to earn each week’s new story content and upgrades. And I’m insanely excited to jump into the new raid with my guild next week!

    See you in Oribos!

Im really loving this expansion so far. PVP players finally can gear up only by doing PVP, and that's something i was waiting for years. The story is good, i didnt feel bored with it. Gearing up alts is also easier now, however i thought we will be able to skip more of the storyline what we have already had seen.

Torghast, for me is a fantastic piece of content. I love roguelikes and this has been done really well.

A real effort has been put in by the devs to stop handholding and forcing players and allowing them to pick and choose what they want to do. It's too early to make definite conclusion but if you like MMOs this is shaping up to be a good expac so far.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay so after a few days of playing shadowlands I have to tell it's definetly not my addon. I enjoyed to choose my first quest area on my own in BfA and here its choosen for you. That was dissappointing a bit but I thought "ok, let's just get 60 and see whats next." But then I got quests to go torghast and thats simply diablo 3 portals like if you play season. I'm a person who dont go dungeons or raids (i'm going there later to gather my curve mount IF I like it) because it's not fun for me.. I rather go questing, gathering, doing achievs, exploring, petbattles or collecting mounts tmog from old raids thats why I loved island expeditions what most ppl didnt. ^^ But now I have to go things like Torghast to keep my story going. I also tried the different levelexperience on an alt already and its okay. It's getting fast and you can choose your area but I enjoyed to play story quests again and again but in shadowlands this feels so slow and you cant choose where to begin so I think i will use this method if I level any more alts. I'm not angry about the addon - many people like it, my friends do too but I'm sad because it feels like there's nothing to do for people like me after 60.. at least I got one thing about the addon I like. I love Ardenweald. all quest area's are well designed in generall with their own theme. Shadowlands is worth to give it a try but dont expect to much if you are like me. Expand

From TBC to this time I was always buying, paying and playing WoW only for random BGs and nothing else - like it was fantasy Battlefield with spells instead of bullets and game was perfectly playable like that from TBC where I started to end of Legion. I never cared about any form of PVE, achievements, mounts, ratings etc., just random BGs. Honor gear used to be always decent in PVP and ranked gear was never locked behind 1,8k+ ratings, maybe except few items like sholders and helmet on TBC and Wotlk. Right now if you are not 2k+ rated player and you don't play any PVE content at all you will be stomped on by both mythic PVE players and high rated PVP players. And keep stupid arguments like it's RPG and gear is the most important thing for yourself, I played this game long enough to know it was not like that for 10+ years. Power gap used to be like maximum 10-20% from honor to conquest gear, not like 50-70%...

Right now power gap in BGs between for example 160 ilvl and 180 ilvl character of same class with high combat participation in DMG done is already astronomical, like 300k dmg done vs 600k dmg done and it's 20 ilvl difference with no raid, m+ and ranked season released yet. There is absolutely zero chance for 200 ilvl player to beat 220 ilvl raider or 2k+ rat PvP player even if they make more mistakes than low ranked/unranked player. While in the past this game was always like 30% gear and 70% skill in instanced PvP even if you had only honor gear, now it's like 30% skill and 70% gear unless you play against same geared person. If you like this game only for casual PvP like me and you think it will be good experience you are terribly mistaken. Don't get tricked by PVP vendors and satisfied tryhard pro PVP players. PVP in this game is satisfying only for top 10-15% elite players with the best PVE gear or highest ratings in rated BGs and arenas and everyne else is screwed once again. Great days for average players from expansions like TBC, Wotlk, MoP and WoD are long gone and SL will not bring them back. If time proves me wrong and random BGs will be fun for unranked player with honor gear only I will change this rating to something more objective like 7/10. Right now it does not look good for casuals in PVP...

Had a horrible dungeon experience with a group who insisted on skipping the majority of mobs and kicked me when I didn't know a particular skip, apparently I'm supposed to spend hours watching youtube videos rather than learning as I go.

The player is once again the hero of this story and all other stories, which continues to feel like a single player game in an open world. It feels so forced and handheld, when you are travelling with Thrall and you see other players travelling with an orc as well, "but that's not Thrall, YOU are with Thrall, they are with a leser orc".. yeah right...

The zones, while looking beautiful, are small and very disconnected. In this expansion you will be travelling a lot more by flight paths that takes forever.

Torghast, which was the one feature I looked forward to feels very repetative despite being sold as a rogue like experience that is different each run. It doesn't feel different at all. You cross your fingers for your class' best power boost and fight through horde of same enemies only to be rewarded with a few drops of legendary crafting materials. Time gated and not rewarding.

I've leveled up. I've run all the dungeons mythic, I've gotten my legendary resources capped, and done everything there is to do in the Maw, and got 4 days left on my subscription. This is the the earliest I've ever quit in an expansion, I don't think there's much that can be done to peak my interest again.

Its like the writers don't even understand their own lore so they tossed it all out the window then threw up on a piece of paper and called it a day. The state of WoW has reached such a point that became its own franchise's worst enemy. Activision and their own writing team killed WoW no matter how it still twitches like a cockroach.

I didnt felt any growth of my character while leveling from 50 to 60, cuz there were no new spells only passive stuff (e.g. increases my cd ability by 3 secs). Reaching max level and choosing the covenant gave me an ability that did not fit into my rotation nor felt good/strong while playing my class (mage/nightfae covenant).
The visual design of the new maps is pretty nice and i like it, but travelling around is a pain (no clear ways, multi levels, walking around a lot of stuff to get somewhere, no portals to somewhere and no whistle to get to the flightmaster from previous expansion, no direct flying route to other maps but always flying to the main city with the stupid animation).
That made the only content besides playing dungeons/pvp awefully time consuming and frustrating(world quests...).
Next point is torgast, which felt quite fun to play the first two runs when exploring the new perks and feeling the rogue like "op-ness" when getting lucky, but it started to get boring pretty fast and for the last two runs i had to force myself to do it, to collect the legendary essence.
Last point is the maw and i dont know what to say about it. U cannot use mounts, u will do boring daily quests and the time u spent doing this stuff in the maw is limited, since it will give annoying mechanics the longer u stay in it until u get just instantly killed (at level 5).

i did love wow and i played it for so many years, but the path blizz went was continously making things less fun and shadowlands did not do that much right so far.

After reaching level 60 the game gets confusing and cannot be handled any more by a single player and a short time after that the storyline lost as well and one stumbles arround with grinding and stupid, simple kill and collection quests.
Besides all of that it is, that the main story is quite foreseeable and of course it is even more sad that the story cannot be played through without having to ask other players for help.

The story is pretty good so far after the first week. The new zones are beautiful and a welcome change from the boring landscapes of azeroth that we have grown accustomed to. For once, I can finally say that I love the soundtrack of the game. The level squish was a welcome change. Although it did make for a bland prepatch state of weakness for my main. It felt good to have something to look forward to in my spellbook as I was leveling.

Unfortunately, this expansion carries on the theme of borrowed power that many players have come to detest. Borrowed power is basically an ability or mechanic that will only exist in any one given expansion. Though, they are good! Each class has their own special ability that they can choose from one of four covenants and another signature ability that every player gets when they accept the hospitality of one covenant. You will be introduced to all of these covenants and abilities as you go through the leveling campaign. This system has its negatives for people who really want to explore their class and get the most out of it. But, I won't get into that. Realistically, only ~10% of the population will feel that sting in any significant way. Launch issues were present. Which happens to every major online release. But thats a strike against the company not the game. At least this isn't a single player game that requires an internet connection. Thankfully, I'm on a small server group so I didn't have much trouble logging in. Though the war mode sharding could have been better. I felt as though my group was outnumbered 5 to 1 by alliance so pvp wasn't really going favorably. We ended up turning off war mode. End game content is pretty solid. I enjoy the dungeons for the most part. They seem like a healthy middle ground between that of Legion and BFA. Im excited for when the keystone season begins to figure out which ones I truly love and hate. The Maw is a good idea for an end game zone. I just wish I could mount there! Druids and Worgen have an advantage in this zone since they can naturally move at mounted speed minus 10%. It looks like eventually, we can get a mount that is usable within the Maw. That aside, its pretty fun to go in there and rough up the jailers army and build a relationship with our new friend out there. They also borrowed the Miyazaki mechanic of returning to where you died to recover the zones currency that was lost when you died. Thankfully, you dont lose all of it. I think I lost about 15% of what I had on me when I died. Finally, Torghast, Tower of the Damned. Its a really fun roguelike addition to WoW that is both repetitive and challenging. I fear that it will quickly become a chore, as the only purpose it serves is to gather soul ash, which is used to craft our legendary gear. For the time being, it is incredibly fun. Im hoping they start to add some cosmetic rewards to it.

Typically, every second expansion introduces a new class for players to try. Unfortunately this is the first time we did not get that. Maybe one is in the works, but covid complications prevented it from being ready in time. At least that's what I'm hoping. Thanks to the shadowlands, they could do anything without being world breaking for the game!

I havent found the time to do structured PVP yet, but im sure its the same as always. Major balancing changes need to happen at some point before the season starts. The worst part is how blatantly the mechanics are designed to keep you subscribed for a long time. There exist weekly caps on many things. Take for example, the campaign. This week, we were only able to finish 2/9 chapters of the level 60 campaign. And I need to wait until next week to hit renown 5, capped at 3 this week, to continue my campaign. This is a little lame, as it almost rewards players for joining the game a little bit later since they won't have to wait so long to get everything unlocked. That being said, it does seem like some major features of the game will be locked behind campaign progression. Meaning that catching up an alt may be a bit of a chore. Or, new players may be at a disadvantage to their peers if they join a month or two down the line. My last point. This expansion seems to be extremely alt friendly. Once you finish the introduction, you can choose to skip the leveling campaign, and go straight to joining a covenant and completing world quests and doing dungeons. This is awesome. It seemed like a lot of my friends were able to max a second character in just a few hours. All in all its a solid experience here in the first week. A few critical bugs preventing side quest progression here and there but nothing besides server-side lag has impeded on the main story. Which is good. In my mind, it certainly does not deserve the amount of review bombing its receiving. Be critical when reading some of the worst user reviews :)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The zones are individually between okay and beautiful, but after what's in the game they really don't create the otherworldly feeling Shadowlands is going for. They are what's already in the game, cranked up by not all that much.
It's highly subjective, of course, but to me Shadowlands comes with the least inspired zones of every expansion. And they are not even linked by a common theme other than being loosely based on a pastiche of real-world afterlife concepts.

The leveling part of the main story is bland, the plot feels rushed and reductive. It does not fit the grand nature of a cosmic story line, and on a more personal level, has not fit the WoW lore. Much of the covenant story line is time-gated, which to me is not only a let-down, but absurd. Let me explore what story you have at my pace. I'd understand limited time-gating as a way to show progress of time (such as during the War of Thorns campaign), but not to get to the main part of the story. What's there, so far, simply isn't much.

I will not complain much about the repetitive quests. I believe that's part of an MMORPG's nature, even though taking inspirations from other games might go a long way.
I won't complain about anima power, either. It was obvious from the get-go that it was going to become another "AP" grind, no matter what Blizzard claimed. I can hit Kotick with a spade and claim it's not assult, but that doesn't change the reality of things.

Thorgast looks fun enough for now, and I expect it to stay that way with regular updates, and perhaps even without. I hope it will become a concept to grow with each expansion, rather than being a one-time deal (such as garrisons, order halls, warfronts or island expeditions - which were not discontinued because they were a ton of fun)

The Threads of Fate are fine. For a player with many alts it works, but that's all. Ultimately, Blizzard has mostly given up on a core component of their game. The process of leveling is just that, regardless of many players who'd rather just have endgame. If leveling up feels like a chore rather than a challenging and interesting journey, if doing a dungeon during the leveling process feels less rewarding than running one at max level, there's a problem with game design. Blizzards way of adressing that issue in Shadowlands is further reducing leveling time, rather than actually making it worth a player's time. This is particularly sad, as Threads of Fate offer a couple of ideas how leveling a character can include relevant elements for endgame.

I'm not mad, I'm disappointed. Or better yet, underwhelmed. There are good things to be said about Shadowlands, but it's uninspired, hackneyed style and story, it's time-gating and the meaninglessness of covenants, beyond getting your BIS Souldbinds and skill, in my opinion, far outweigh every bit of progress the xpac has made from BfA.

For me Shadowlands is a beautiful sign that Blizzard still has the ability to make a game which I could get addicted to. The graphics are amazing, I really love them and the story is so good. I love seeing all my favourite characters from older addons now in the new quest area. On the one side its nostalgia which takes me back into the year 2008 when I was sitting there and played WoW only to get to the lich king (just one example)
The quests are an mix of good fun quests and serious story quests. I didn't skip one cut-scene which I did a lot of times in BfA, because the plot wasn't that good.

It's the first time I feel like I can get everything done in a week to keep my player power decent, and if I have some extra time on my hands, I can still grind more/ level alts. It's the first time you can only play / enjoy the content you like, and still be somewhat competitive.

Blizzard has avoided to create actual content for dungeons, and sells this as an "epic" feature, and distorted ("mythic") dungeons into repetitive time-driven grinds with no appeal for anyone seeking stories behind them.

And Thorgast, the new "endgame" instance ... doable solo ... Boring boring boring. Random-generated filler-levels with no appeal, with countless anonymous monsters with no story-connection to kill until one reaches the "interesting parts".

The real "highlight" is that you can avoid to follow the main story line with alts (!)
and start with daily quests and endless dungeons runs from day one. Yeah.

Covenants traits - which block the talents you want to switch (no chance as a tank for a damage dealer ) - making the tank and healer shortage even more present.

The only well deserved score points are for the music and the design of the new world. If that is enough? We'll see.

Ever since then I give WoW a Chance every Addon but they always manage to make an OK leveling (even their new approach to storytelling is below average in comparrison to story rich MMOs) into tiring daily grind. I don't mind a grind but the WoW grind is boring as hell as it is the same since Ages. Thorgast doesnt really change this as Thorgast is boring on your 3rd run too. I also don't wanna talk about how trash the Maw ist and how boring 3 Button Classes are.

Overall.. just another typical WoW Expac - the people who like it will get their new copy of a old formular everybody else will go again like me.

So i will Review the Start of the addon:
    + no Server lags
+ perfect Start, really - me and my friends hat no problems and we startet on point and leveled fast to 60.
    + cool new Features
+ old storys in New style! Not just recycled, it's all about the Story, so we have to know what happened to understand the whole World of warcraft :3
+ very cool dungeons, good design, Short runways, good and new looking mechanics, like!
+ you have enough time to equip your chars, Level more than one character and explore everything you want to before raiding starts.
+ more of the jobs become interesting again (have to work together more)
+ 4 Alternative Story Lines to play if you want to!
+ gear with pve and pvp
+ 4 absolute different zones which looks awesome!
+ very good explaining of everything! I love to test the new abilties while leveling. And it's still hard to decide in the end :)

    Negative Points:
-The Alternative leveling phase costs more time and is not very interesting.
    - if you Hit 60 with normal questing again, you have tp complete the Campaign again? Maybe bug!

    Neutral:
+- torghast. You will Need it, and you can love it or hate it. Maybe to a later time, there will be Other ways to progress your legendarys.

So at this point, 6 days after Release the game is Great!
I had very Little Problems and Im excited to see what comes next.

So if you realy mean you are right with your raiting? No they whant just kill the game more than that isn't it. To my Rating: For me its one of the best MMoRPG's worldwide. Since releas i had many fun over the jears i game it. It hade over the Jears many bug's but they all repaired or reported. In other Games i know it haven't intelligent bug report systems. Its in wow also not the best but it works better then other. To the addon i whant to say its for me better like Legion and i see in real no addon who whas realy sad. the only problem what i see is some guys who dosn't like the game and whant push it from the internet. Grafic: Since 16 jears is the graficmodel existence of the world. I think i need not more to say that blizzard make the best work to became whith this old system such powerful textures and models. Its a beautiful work and i love to see in shadowlands a perfect new setting to show us that. Gameplay: i feal like i have the best from all my best addons in one. The pakt system give me a fealing like granision in WoD with legion impacts. My classes ar work like my best times on wotlk and cata but it still not the same as there. I have fun and it is not to easy to play. And the hole quest system have all i whanted from all addons before i dont see why people think it haven't enough content. So i need to go to bus i have more but no more time tanks for reading and god bye. wo

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is a return to greatness for the franchise. The content is both accessible and fun for all types of players, and the story actually makes you feel like everything you’re doing is helping to save the Shadowlands. Torghast is one of the best features ever added and makes each experience unique and fun. While there are some issues which can slow down the time it takes to get everything you want, the journey there is still enjoyable.
