NCSOFT embarrasses themselves again with a moderately generic WoW clone that removes any improvements made to the formula this century and injects various 2014 team game cliches: Pixar-esque art (though more genuine than cringeworthy attempts by Gearbox, at least), the One Pet Class That Is a Roboticist, an obvious attempt at ripping off Pandora of Borderlands but with cat girls instead ofNCSOFT embarrasses themselves again with a moderately generic WoW clone that removes any improvements made to the formula this century and injects various 2014 team game cliches: Pixar-esque art (though more genuine than cringeworthy attempts by Gearbox, at least), the One Pet Class That Is a Roboticist, an obvious attempt at ripping off Pandora of Borderlands but with cat girls instead of shirt designs from Hot Topic, "dodge the danger zone" boss mechanics like it's a phone game, and an obvious imminent discontinuation of support. Meanwhile combat is slow, quests are boring, there's absolutely nothing that is new except nominally, and once again NCSOFT is providing the worst customer support in existence.

Unsurprisingly the game went free-to-play within moments of its release, as will be the case for most MMOs from here on out, along with mechanics that increasingly resemble freemium phone games such as 20 different currencies from 20 different sources, AFK passive gameplay, data mining, daily DLC that requires more research than investments, over-emphasis on copying video games from the early 2000s, deceptive marketing that makes the product almost indistinguishable from a more successful competitor, utterly cluttered user interfaces, and, of course, a much higher price hidden behind exploitative marketing tactics.

Thank you o NCSOFT for this blessing (turd) you have bestowed upon the MMORPG market. Now bring back City of Heroes or sell it already.

REVISITING THE REVIEW IN 2020: support was indeed discontinued in 2018. Wow, who could have guessed? It's as though I'm more familiar with the workings of NCSOFT than the people who rated my review.

First. I do not like MMO(RPGs) normally. I normally do not like to level my character, normally i do not like special abilities, normally i do not like to grind. But WILDSTAR just know how to do the things right. How to make it in a way its ****ing enjoyable.

    Positive:

    – Aurin and Chua lore
    – Female Aurin's animations and Chua animations
    – Mordesh artdesign is badass
    – combat system is outstanding. there is no better combat system in any other MMO, MMORPG or RPG out there.
especially the spellslinger plays like a SHOOTER, you have to aim. You can miss, enemies can miss, you can dodge, enemies can dodge… run and shoot, jump and shoot, slow, interupt, root, position shift, forward jump stun, void slip AND shoot!. You have less abilities than in other MMOs that **** you full with abilities. But wildstar does not need 100 abilities each class. You have your rotations, you have the freedom to try everything and its so fun to do so.
    – instances. Especially the dungeons and even more especially the expeditions are super great and fun.
    – free-to-play-model is very fair. Every other game is not that fair. I was very surprised
    – housing and holo wardrobe is nice and i think housing is the best housing of all mmos

    neutral:
    – maybe they have overdone it with class set runes and some AMPs. sometimes less is more

    negative:
    – developer has not much budget, so its lacking content after some months (if you don't count raids, that will take longer to clear, much longer - difficulty is another POSITIVE example, its always fair but hard to master)

    other:
    – developer has to wake up FINALLY and advertise the game more. do it now!

If you want some gameplay impression from solo instances (expeditions) you can search for 'tulinfram solo gold run wildstar'. Forget tulinfram if you don't want to watch my own videos but videos from others.

This is probably the best MMO I've played in... ever. The devs set out to create a game that did not adhere to the tired MMO fantasy worlds and boring stories - and they delivered.

The only problem with this game is the low population. But, of course, there's an easy solution to that - play this game!

Easily the best MMORPG on the market. I would definitely recommend Wildstar to beginners in the genre, and it has severe challenges in the endgame too. But it does a good job of varying the quests as you get into the game. and is overall a lot of fun. It does have some problems, of various categories. But overall the game is solid and polished.
Some of the weaknesses, in my opinion, become more of an issue later in the game. But since the game is now F2P this is a good opportunity to get into it if you haven't before.

+ Graphics. Manages to create its own style, which is a jolly, wild west in space vs sci-fi theocracy meets high tech artificial intelligence.
+ Sound. Appropriately western vs sci fi theocracy meets high tech artificial intelligence, uh, -y.
+ Crafting. Interesting take on tradeskills, with a lot of scope for experimentation.

+- Combat. More skill-based than most other MMORPGs, although it is also twitchy and a bit annoying. The game uses a system of telegraphs, which looks great, but which I am unsure of whether is the game's greatest strength or weakness. It might be both. Anyway, the telegraph system is fun in small scale action but quickly gets overwhelming. In a raid you will at worst feel like a failure; at best like you're taking part in some weird, digital formation dancing. When you combine this with the dash mechanic (double tap in either direction to dive out of the way of AOE) and occasionally interactive things like holding a key to break stuns etc, it can be a daunting task to get anywhere in WS. Some of us sucked at dancing at school, and apparently still suck at it.
+- Questing. Lots of creativity has gone into the questing in Wildstar. Although again, you wonder sometimes if the quest system is a weakness in the end. It floods you with activities so that you often end up barging through a zone barely able to pay attention to the quests, wildly hitting your coms to get new ones in the middle of doing challenges, holdouts and who knows what else. At the end of such an excursion you will often have challenges failed or in need of improvement, simply because you got them while trying to do three other quests. There is such a hectic pace that it will be a rare player who actually gets to read any of the quest text.

    - General clutter. The game floods you with, well, everything. You have six billion vendors, quest givers, mounts, crafting stations and on and on endlessly. It is impossible to walk two steps without something happening. Combine that with interface clutter because of all the things you can do and starting a WS account becomes an exhausting experience. It's basically inevitable in a way; what took ten + years to develop in WoW was all supposed to just be in Wildstar from the start. And the end result is just...clutter.
In fact, some of the things I dislike the most about WS it has inherited from WoW directly. Most annoying of these things is the Looking for Group function. Although handy if you just want to get a quest done, it predictably has a rather dramatic impact on the community. I played the game for three months on launch and have played it again for a week now. And in all that time I don't think anyone has talked to me even once. You just don't have to because of the LFG. Click button, wait, do dungeon, leave dungeon. All the socialization has been taken out of not only Wildstar, but MMORPGs in general, because of this. It is basically a single player game for a very, very long time. You occasionally play that single player game next to other people, but it's still a single player experience.
All the work of getting a group together to do something gets done by the game, which is great. But as it turns out that was what made these games social.
And this function is responsible for one more problem. Because the LFG teleports you to the instance the moment your team is assembled, and right back to the same place afterwards, I honestly don't even know where any of the instances are in WS. It is all just automated. And as a result the world itself feels pointless. There is no traveling anyway, which is a good thing because of the very annoying taxi driver. You just pick a spot on the map and there you are! But as a result not even the old MMORPG ritual of going to the dungeon and entering a portal is necessary.

All my reasons for downgrading Wildstar come from this stuff. It is a good game, and I realize that it's a good game. But it robs me of the social aspect of an MMORPG by organizing everything for me. And in the end it is hard to love a game when it does that. I know how much fun self-organizing MMORPG activities can be. All the personalities you meet along the way, all the joy and all the tantrums. And I do not understand why every game in the genre has to include bad ideas, simply because WoW thought of them first. The LFG is the mother of bad ideas. At least so far as MMORPGs go.

Wildstar was a quirky game that entertained me for a couple months, but lacked the depth to keep me hooked. Not worth paying for, but now that it is free I say if you can find a few friends to play with I think it is worth exploring for about 60-80 hours of gameplay.

This is all my opinion on this game. Let me also point out that I don't ever write reviews. I think the last review I wrote was for Halo Combat Evolved to give you an idea of how rare this is. I also only even consider writing reviews for truly exceptional games, especially ones that I don't believe get the credit they deserve.

I also only even consider writing reviews for truly exceptional games, especially ones that I don't believe get the credit they deserve.

I'll also point out that I have a lot of experience in MMOS, or I should say experience trying out MMOs. The only MMO I've actually enjoyed for more than the first few hours (until I played Wildstar) was WoW. I easily have over 300 hours of gamplay in WoW, though my interest is finally almost depleted. Having enjoyed WoW so much I've tried multitudes of other MMOs. I've tried Tera, Rift, Aion, Guild wars 1 and 2, Vindictus, LotR Online Neverwinter, SWTOR, Skyforge, FFXIV, Eve Online, Blade And Soul, Star Trek Online, and I'm sure several others that I can't think of. And most of these I quit before playing more than 10-15 hours so I'm not even qualified to review most of them. I'm sure most of them are really good games but they just didn't hold my interest, even though I always wanted to and expected to love each one of them prior to playing. Maybe the end game content is great and I just never got there, but if the game can't hold my interest past level 10 than I'm obviously not going to play it.

So what's my point with all of this? My point is that out of all of these MMOs, Wildstar is the only other game besides WoW that I've continued to play for many many hours and I think anyone who has enjoyed an MMO should give it a try. It has amazingly fun combat, the character creation and character models are awesome, it has fantastic end game and raid content. I could go on and on but other reviews have already gotten into the specifics of the game so check those out if you want more specifics on the actual gameplay.

I am super picky when it comes to MMOs, I'll try any (and have tried a lot) but if I don't love it I won't play it, and I love Wildstar and I think it deserve more attention. Please give the game a try and see for yourself!!

A more amusing MMO then most, Wildstar's combination of telegraph-based combat, emphasis on convenience; with a mount available at level 1 if you use their 2-Step authentication and all cash shop items purchasable with currency earned in-game, and a colorful and bombastic asthetic that reminded me strongly of PS2-era platformers like Ratchet & Clank endeared it to me, at least for a fewA more amusing MMO then most, Wildstar's combination of telegraph-based combat, emphasis on convenience; with a mount available at level 1 if you use their 2-Step authentication and all cash shop items purchasable with currency earned in-game, and a colorful and bombastic asthetic that reminded me strongly of PS2-era platformers like Ratchet & Clank endeared it to me, at least for a few hours. However, after trying the beta I passed over the game during its intial boxed release, and did not try it in earnest until it went free. While it's about as entertaining as any other MMO for me, which is to say, not very much, by the standards of free-to-play games its quality is well above average. I am told it has a strong emphasis on end-game content like dungeons and raids, and though I am nowhere near that, such is the point in an MMO at which I usually stop playing, based on previous negative experiences I had as a member of a raiding guild in World of Warcraft: I experience enough drama playing team shooters. But I'd sooner raid then play a PvP-centric MMO, I'd sooner play this then, say, TERA, and I'd sooner play this game with friends then alone. Worth checking out if you have any interest in the genre. I just wish this game, and many others, offered the quality of solo experience that The Old Republic does. Expand

Most of AMD card owners do not have huge problems with the game, but even GTX1080 players on onf forums say that they can't even get stable 60FPS... So forget to play the game on 600, 700 or 800 GPU versions. Also instead of fixing code problems they are forcing players to use side guides and changing gamer optimized systems to somehow normally run Wildstar and make all other games unplayable on this systems, also some of that fixes may harm you machine if you don't know what and how to do... So take care. Very strange that Wildstar graphics level game can't run better, even same like Black Desert or Star Citizen... (some funboys say that Wildstar have Better graphics than Black Desert or Star Citizen... Happen... O.o)
Graphics are way old for resource consumption, even Legion expansion provides same level graphics with very low resource usage, will say nothing how far Wildstar is from WoW.
But ideas of the game on lunch was cool and really fun, but all even live features (don't wait new ones at all) are cutted off and optimized for very low online Steam helps a little to increase player base, but anyway there are very low number of players who play it.
Can't say do not try it, maybe you will like it, cos game still have nice ART and still left some interesting features, but game which developers don't want to fix 2-3 years old problems and make game somehow playable for its level can't be scored by me. So sorry, but 0/10, Shame to NCsoft after so many great projects creating Wildstar...

Once you have a house, a rickety mount and basic crafting skills you can head into a dungeon at 20. The dungeons in Wildstar are fantastic! Instances are explosive and demand teamwork. The community are friendly (and thankfully patient) so good communication are important. I remember when WoW was, for me, at its peak and it took our guild many nights of failing before we finally conquered Onixia. This was the top boss at the time and we came away feeling that we'd really achieved something. Even in the smaller scale level 20 (5 man) instances the balance is satisfyingly fun and painful at the same time.

Combat is fresh and exciting and with lots of movement factored in they can sometimes end up being a close and intense affair with only your wits and choices being the difference between survival and death (or worse - wipe)!

    Overview:
Don't be put off by the negative reviews. Yes, the subscription is a bit of a bummer, but I believe that as long as they're delivering regular updates (and fixes in some cases) then it becomes worth it.

The only lost marks for me are that the genre has been done to death and in many cases poorly. Wildstar does not offer much variation on what we've seen before BUT somehow still manages to be enjoyable and an enjoyably effective time sink!

The graphics weren't exactly cutting edge but it is an MMO and let's be real, the graphics can't have a massively high card requirement or most people won't be able to buy it. Then things went downhill...fast. There were clear issues with the game's pvp from the very beginning and none of that got addressed. The population began to flounder immediately. Wildstar went from garnering the loudest rumors of "WoW killer" to having a reputation for most disappointing potential WoW killer in the history of MMOs. Expand

Playing this takes me back to the good of the old days of MMO's like anarchy online and SWG. It's one of those games where you can spend all day game-planning before you even log on. Nice spin on an old model for a new product!

Carbine never was set to reinvent the wheel. But they put a nice set of custom rims on their vehicle. And then they strapped the whole thing on a space shuttle and send it into space.

For those burnt out on WOW's content, WildStar is easy to endorse. Immediately familiar to anyone who's visited Azeroth and with enough new twists on the tried-and-tested theme park formula, Carbine's game is so overflowing with stuff to do that it's certainly justified in asking for a subscription - even if less people seem prepared to sign up to one.

Wildstar banks on hardcore raid and instance difficulty as well as its excellently implemented "dancing" real time combat mechanic to offer something significantly new and fresh to the MMORPG scene. Low server population and annoying hints of a "Pay To Win More" model hold it back in certain areas, but it has all the potential of becoming a well established and much loved setting for years to come.
