Whispers Of A Machine is a solid Point & Click adventure underpinned with some intriguing choice mechanics, boasting a solid, if not revelatory plot. Worth seeking out.

Whispers of a Machine is an approachable point and click adventure. The story is pretty interesting and the main character, as well as few side characters, are well-crafted too. It falls shy of the best examples of the genre, but Whispers of a Machine isn't far off the mark from being considered great.

Despite having big ideas, Whispers of a Machine is ultimately a traditional example of the genre with some neat ideas rather than something revelatory. But it's very good at what it does, and those augmentations help to differentiate it from all the other adventure games out there. It's short but gripping, offering a well-written, interesting and clever experience that wraps up well and which rewards your choices and play style with unique powers and puzzle solutions.

Whispers of a Machine really does feel magical in hindsight, considering how a second playthrough could elicit utterly different scenarios and puzzles.

Whispers of a Machine is like a good episode of your favorite police procedural: familiar and fun, no more and no less.

Whispers of a Machine is a huge step ahead compared to Kathy Rain and a new look for hand-drawn AGS-based adventure games. Still, there are too many brilliant ideas that remain underdeveloped.

  1. I really enjoyed it, I really appreciated having a methodical, forthright adventure game to play, with excellent art and animations, good music, great acting, and a story worth hearing. I just wish I’d been more of a detective as I did it.

A very nice, retro style point-and-cilck adventure. A charming cast, good voice acting and spectacular backgrounds add to the feeling.

I like the story . but have played more engaging ones in the past. (but also much worse ones)

What i did not quite like was the .. sprites? (are those sprites?) the objects that move vs. the static backgrounds. The backgrounds are smoothed with very noticable AA (well, noticable because of the very low resolution) - while the characters and mobile objects are very, VERY jagged and pixalated. While they still look VERY good and well drawn - they stand out a bit much from the background.

I am not finished with the game, so i cannot comment further on the conclusion - but all in all .. this is a game that is certainly well above the average - but also well in the more casual player range (similar puzzle difficulty like the Blackwell series)

Cannot stand the autosave system. Such a stupid decision from the devs. Let me decide when to save and keep my save points like I always didCannot stand the autosave system. Such a stupid decision from the devs. Let me decide when to save and keep my save points like I always did since the '90s. Also, this has been aggravated by the fact that I played about one hour then logged off. When I returned to the game there was no autosave file to load and I had to start from zero.

At that point I was just too infuriated and stopped playing altogether. Not sure I will touch the game ever again.

I went the empathy route and feel it was probably easy mode. It does not feel like it has replay value though. It is humourless and the story disappoints a bit by the end, but I do wholeheartedly recommend it. Full Review »
