While this is certainly a niche game, it is a good game of its type. It runs well, I've had no crashes, freezes, or loading problems. I think there have been some issues running it in Win 10, but Win 8.1 runs it well. I'm running it at 2560x1440 @ 60Hz, no problem. There are glitches certainly, but nothing to stop your progress. And support for the game, on the Steam discussion board, has been stellar. It's a game in the style of Gothic, in that it doesn't hold your hand. You get a quest with minimal direction and you have to solve it. Exploration is mandatory for everything, but you have a detailed map to help you get around. Not that it will lead you directly to your destination; exploration, again. You can make bookmarks on the map. You talk to people to get quests, no ! over their heads. Also, there's nothing to tell you when you complete a quest, no Ta-Dah. You have to know when you've done as asked. Combat is meh, but the focus of the game is not combat, it's story and exploration. The tutorial explains all the basics, but you have to explore to uncover everything. I spent 90 min. just on noob island. There are also 3 short tutorial vids available and an online game manual. The graphics are simple, you'll feel like you're playing Risen, but they are suitable to this type of game. Voice acting is pretty good and all major NPCs, like quest givers, are voiced. All in all, if you like games where you take your time, explore, have to figure things out for yourself, and that have a pretty good story; I think you'll like this. I gave it 8/10 because it needs some fine tuning. But, it also does everything it sets out to do pretty well. Expand

As long as you realize that there are going to be annoyances that are out of your control, you can still have a blast with the game. The character progression system is very intriguing and rewarding, since there are many options at your disposal, especially in the spell department.

Wave of Darkness tries to separate itself from other games on the market by trying to do everything one might want to see in an RPG: deep item and spell crafting, open-world environments, tough encounters. All of these things are fine goals, but they’re all done better elsewhere.
