So, is Watchmen worth your hard-earned cash? I'm going to have to give a resounding "yes" to this expertly crafted beat-em-up. Even with its' shortcomings Watchmen always feels fresh, and really stands apart as a downloadable title.

It doesn't do enough to raise itself beyond being just a solid (albeit fun) brawler. [May 2009, p.70]

If you like classic brawlers, Watchmen is one of the best 3D adaptations of this formula ever made, and the best in recent times. It can become repetitive; in fact it is, what matters is if you like it enough. With a striking technical part because of its price-quality relation, and some very fun features, Watchmen deserves at least a try.
  4. Moore and Gibbons bestowed Watchmen with incredibly rich atmosphere, but you can’t make a masterpiece out of atmosphere alone. Too little of everything. Too monotonous. Too unoriginal.

Objectively, this first Watchmen episode is just an average brawler that looks fantastic at times, and has some good voice acting to boot.
  6. The End is Nigh is a good beginning for the Watchmen franchise in videogames, although in the future we should ask them for more. An extra in variety and a deeper AI in the enemies seem necessary, and the presence of more complex puzzles will bring variety to the experience. Nevertheless this is a pleasant but brief Hack and Slash.
  7. The End Is Nigh serves up light beat-'em-up fare with a Watchmen flavor. Those hungry for anything substantial will be disappointed.
  8. For an episodic game – one that costs 18 Euros on Steam – The End is Nigh might just be worth its price, if you understand and accept its handicaps for what they are.
  9. Watchmen: The End Is Nigh is a fairly mediocre beat-'em-up made special only by the source material from which it drew its inspiration. Playing as Nite Owl and Rorschach is faintly amusing, and the in-jokes, references and cameos are certain to appeal to Watchmen fans, but that is about the extent of its potential.
  10. At first glance Watchmen looks like a nice surprise with its beautiful style and delicious combat system. But after a while the repeating level design and gameplay elements will have you thinking otherwise. Nevertheless, we'll be waiting for episode two, because we're convinced that there is light and the end of the tunnel.

This beat-em-up appeals outright to my instincts with its old school simplicity and intuitiveness. Unfortunately the more I play, the more I long for the end. What initially appears so attractive, becomes stale and boring after about 40 minutes. The specials are worn after two uses, it's more efficient to use one and the same combo all over again. [May 2009]

The game is very, very repetitive and very, very dumb, falling light years short of the novel's depth. [July 2009, p.77]

Though the very idea of a Watchmen brawler may sicken some, this could have been a good game. Unfortunately, the design lacked any imagination whatsoever. Add Watchmen: The End is Nigh to the long list of movie-licensed games that aren't any good.
  14. An unmotivated brawler at best. Consider to buy it only if Watchmen is your absolute all-time favorite and you can’t live without a game about it.
  15. As a traditional arcade co-op fighter this one delivers. Anything past this, and you are asking too much from it. The price tag is its own worst enemy.
  16. The real breaking point for this innocuous title is the price tag. Yes, Watchmen is one of the best looking downloadable games we’ve seen (even if the lighting takes the murky color palette to nearly opaque darkness), and yes, the voice acting and production values are impressively high-end. Still, paying $20.00 for such a shallow experience just doesn’t seem right.

Budget price and low hardware requirements can attract gamers to try this straightforward hack’n’slash game. Repetitive missions and locations will reliably repel them after two to three hours of gameplay. [Apr 2009]

A great play, not one for people who are new to the Watchmen universe, but still, a great play, 10 thumbs up.

You hit a bunch of the dumbest NPCs in the room, then run into the next room, then pull the lever, then hit the enemies in the next room. This is repeated 5 chapters. In chapter 6, you do the same, but with the addition of a boss. And there are 10 collectables scattered across the levels. There is also a cooperative passage with split-screen. This is all. Seriously. Fights are monotonous, fast punch, powerful punch, grab, dodge. Three types of enemies. There are about 5 kill animations and they are incredibly long. You manage to see them all in the first chapter. No difficulty, no challenge, no interesting game mechanics, no interesting story. Batman Arkham Asylum was released in the same year, and he is absolutely better than the Watchmen in everything. This is the worst game I have ever played. Full Review »
