Amazing title by the creator of the original and mastermind behind the masterpieces 'Fallout'
many games try to recreate the post apocalyptic era, but only these geniouses can do it..

a superb experience on atmosphere, writing and engaging story-telling.

    2. Balance issues, I can’t believe that a rifle does more damage than a sniper or a brawler... fortunately this issue is corrected by mods, but should be well balanced from vanilla.

    3. The lack of the official toolset. Is enough great from vanilla, no complains, but a toolset would make it unlimited with plenty of mods.

The rest is very good, you can enjoy this game without any mods, double with mods, and infinitely with the toolset, I just needed to say the few flaws I feel and the best wishes to Wasteland 3!

wasteland 2 is a refreshing strategy RPG game, it has a solid storyline and gameplay mechanic. Voice acting is a boost and gripping combat re-invites players to the game. The easter eggs and controversial content makes the game even more appealing as it touches on interesting subjects post Nuclear war. I have very much enjoyed the game, after having played many.

I would rate this game in full honesty as a game worth its money, offering good Interaction with environment, a interesting, solid storyline and theme. The selling point in this game i would say is that the quests are none repetitive, fit the theme and are custom tailored for the setting making it more enjoyable.

Its also worth noting that actions you take ( Spolier ) will affect the final outcome of the game where it all shows as a summary of your actions.

The downside of this game, is that the quests / Journal doesnt really tell you what you must do, however, it does remind the player through notes and quest log.

All in all, the game is worth it and is fun.

This is not a game for everyone. Honestly, it does not even pretend to be. I saw a lot of haters who dislike its graphics, lot of text and dice rolling mechanics so I will try to explain my position here.

Yes, dice mechanics is RNG, but it surely provides you with situations you are unprepared for, forces you to think on a game, not just smash 5,6 - 5,6 - 1,2,3 - 1,2,3. Surely you can't master everything and if your character is average than his choices are average, what's wrong with that? Carefully plan your party, this also enriches replayability and since the game is full of choices your next walkthrough will not be boring and tedious. Surely some people prefer to read few words in 3-4 round dialog options, I couldn't care less about them. All important dialogues have great voice acting, and for all others we have one of the best writings I've ever read. It's a small price for the amount of content, reactivity, choices that truly mean something (unlike the facepalm "choices" in ME3), numerous ways to solve quests and the ability to truly roleplay.

Seriously, who decided that the one game should please everyone? I've waited for something like that since Fallout 2, and nobody was able to fulfill my wishes. Wasteland 2 obviously has flaws, but they are nothing compared to what it delivers - truly apocalyptic roleplaying experience.

I'm crossing my fingers and waiting for Numenera.

I am surely a bit biased because Wasteland for C64 was my first RPG, and I loved it, but I really love this long awaited second episode too.

The only thing I didn't like so much is the combat system, limited to a small zone, so long range weapons are not very efficient. However, this choice balances the use of melee

I wish that more modern RPGs were much more story oriented like this, instead of being only meaningless FPS with some RPG elements (Fallout 4 anyone?).

And that is in spite of the "shortcuts" such as re-used character portraits and some very similar environments. This is therefore quite an accomplishment indeed.

Looking forward to a replay for the Director's Cut.

Not so suprising, as I am a great fan of turn based strategy games, I find it vital that a game has solid story, offers relevant choices (both tactical and strategic ones) amd I don't mind (actually like) to read a lot. And I find that the added-value of flawless graphics are somewhat overrated, so I am ready for compromises in this department. If you agree with me upon these things, you will have great time playing. If not... then maybe W2 was not meant for you.
To explain why I did not give 9 or 10: I find some parts of the games are too long, like a book that should have been more carefully edited. The ability system is also a bit disappointing, as it binds your hands before you could understand the game (forget about advices on the net, where you can find anything as well as its contrary). Considering the slow progression, 1 additional point per each ten levels gives practically no margin to reshuffle later on. I understand that 'the wasteland is a harsh and unforgiving place', but this is simply evil. Thirdly, things are a bit overcomplicated (again, editing). Despite the time that I spend to understand what is going on and why, I often do not have the info for solid choices. So I guess. Then I am simply surprised to see that sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don't ... But why??? Dunno... The 'harsh and unforgiving' covers a lot of ground, but at the same time it is me who plays and if I am pushed around too much, that easily becomes irritating.
Anyway, on balance, this is a great game!!

    GAMEPLAY/GRAPHICS
The gameplay is good. There is strategic fighting. People die in gruesome and satisfying ways. Objects get destroyed, explosions and energy charges look cool. Parts of environment can be destroyed.
That said, there is no proning. There are no reaction buttons (like in Fallout Tactics). The covering system is outwright broken (no cover where should be, too easy to hit covered objects). Some guns don`t have burst mode when they should. I`d say that the gameplay in WL2 requires a rework because the combat is really a roulette even to a Fallout fan.I wanted to see WL/Fallout get more with the times. I wanted to see some ideas from say XCOM, nothing like that actually hapenned. The ally NPCs turn hostile everytime you hit them (friendly fire).Critical hits are not portrayed graphically in any form other than red figures. You cannot hit individual body parts other than head - which has no influence on sight anyhow. The effects such as bleeding, shock, concussion are painfully random. There are only 3 types of energy weapons. Also, the damage they do is nonsensical. There is no AP/JHP ammo. The close range aim penalty for Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles is nonsensical. Why don`t some enemies drop loot when killed?!You kill a guy carrying a minigun but as soon as you get to his dead body he`s empty….???Tha Attritubes system heavily prefers Speed, Strenght and Awareness. Other attributes are of no real meaning to gameplay or story. You will not be able to choose special dialogue options even if you choose high Intelligence. You can be a great Surgeon/Field medic with 3 intelligence. You can have 4 NPCs with you even if you have 2 Charisma. And so on.Moreover, in conversations, once you said something you can`t return to certain themes.. The characters can choose their clothes but the armor they wear is not shown - so I wear Power Armor but still look like a light armed commando. Really made me scratch my head on this one. Why did the developpers think that I`d like my player to wear jeans more than Power Armor…someone ask them please.
    STORY
I played Ranger difficulty. In every single map I was outgunned and outnumbered. Each and every type of enemy is better equipped and better trained than the Desert Rangers. No difference if you fight raiders, robbers, militia, the military commando or androids - all are big threat to your team every time. The animals such as badgers are enemies as fearsome as the Deathclaws in Fallout which is silly. Sometimes the quests broke because I did things out of the order - for example if I had a conversation with the quest giver AFTER I killed his enemy, he didn`t notice it or thank me nor could I tell him I did him a favor. No, you need to do the quests in a certain order or you`re in for a loss of your gaming time and XP.I cannot fathom why did the developpers think than boxes, crates and doors need to “level up” with the player. You can`t just get the skills to a certain level, you have to constantly work on them. It is not like a crate hiding a good assault rifle needs level 8 lockpicking to be opened. The difficulty depends sheerly on what level you are. So you open that box that required 10 lockpicking and you get 10 rounds of .45cal ammo…At the end of the game you need level 9 skills to open all but few doors/boxes or repair something. Again, who thought it was ok?
    MUSIC/FX
Very good, climatic music to go through the whole story. There are few background sets that put you in that postapocalyptic mood. They don`t get in the way of good fun and match the extensive reading in this game. Personally I`d add 3-4 more of those, because IMO every town and settlement should have its own melody, not so in WL2.I really like the FX of the guns, splatters, shooting and hitting different surfaces. Interface sounds, reloading sounds etc. all done very well and add to the gameplay and story a great bit.
    CONCLUSION
Overall, Wasteland 2 is a good game for me. It might feel a bit behind the times for a newcomer though. Some gameplay and story choises left me wondering but overall I enjoyed the game and felt bad that it finally ended. I also can`t help the feeling that a masterpiece could have been created but we just got a good game. Don`t get me wrong, for and indie game it is impressive but still it missed so many opportunities and few questionable design choices. It cost me the same as an AAA title so I grade it AAA-wise. So WL2 gets an 8 from me but it would take a LOT of reworking the game to get a 9 or even a 8,5.

While it's not as good as the classics like Fallout or Baldur's Gate II, it does manage to bring back that type of feeling. I backed it in kickstarter and am happy with the result. I would rate it 8.5/10.

The wasteland is an interesting place to discover, full of both dilemma's and humor. You have to make difficult, morally ambiguous decisions and those can have consequences immediately or much later in the game.

You start out with a party of 4 rangers you create from scratch and you can recruit up to 3 additional NPC companions (or more if you dump a ranger or one gets killed). Character creation is fantastic. You get a lot of different options and each can be useful for solving different situations. You can create a balanced unit or create 4 elite soldiers all specialized in assault rifles, pistols, ... and rely on recruitable NPC's for other skills.

These choices influence your possibilities during the squad based tactical combat. There are different weapon, armor and ammo types, there is strategic positioning, ... The only thing they should have added was the targeting of individual body parts (fallout style).

Wasteland 2 has got it's own style and feeling and that's good. InExile did a great job in my view!

Now I read that inXile is upgrading the game from Unity 4.5 to Unity 5.0 which will make graphic looks even better, and the next patch will bring perks into the game. So I will be going though the game again soon :)

Also there is high replayability possible, because your game will probably always be different because of choices/party composition and you can really roleplay in it!

One negative review here mentions this as a drawback, that the characters you create have no real backstories and therefore are not memorable. Well I created four very unique characters with awesome backstories that I wrote myself. Combine this with the option of importing custom portraits, and you have the tools needed to create some very cool post-apocalyptic badasses who will be memorable with a little creativity and imagination.

Another aspect of Wasteland 2 that's cool and retro is the text descriptions of places you visit. Most games are satisfied with just visually revealing a new area for you to explore. Wasteland 2 also adds a paragraph or two of well written text descriptions that definitely add to the world immersion. Sure you can graphically see how a mysterious cave entrance looks when you encounter it, but to also read about the smell of stale air and the foreboding sense of dread it gives you just adds so much detail to an already interesting world.

So that's just a couple of things that Wasteland 2 does that makes it so great and so retro. Newer gamers will no doubt find this game tedious and slow. Older gamers will find it refreshing. It's as simple as that. And please people, stop rating a game on how poorly it runs on your system. It's usually not the developer's fault, or at least it has nothing to do with the actual quality of the game. If it doesn't work on your system and you can't play it, then how can you rate it (I'm looking at you Chowda)?!? Of course it's frustrating to purchase software that you can't immediately play, but technical issues don't equate to a bad game.

People who want an easy game to jump in and play for the 'action' will be sorely disappointed. I recommend this game for those who are expecting to put in serious hours and enjoy reading in general. Most problems presented in the game have multiple solutions as do most quests. Like Fallout, your decisions factor heavily into the end of the game.

It does suffer from a few small flaws, the attributes really are meaningless. Intelligence is extremely important, Strength if you want the best armor, and an extra point or two in Charisma is needed if you want to be able to recruit all of the NPCs.

Its other major flaw is that it is very easy to lock yourself out of sidequests, or completely miss them. Many sidequests require you to have some specific item in your inventory when talking to an NPC that is found in another area, and it is really easy to have an inventory full of items for quests you missed because you didn't know you needed to go back and talk to someone. Worse, occassionally completing some other quest will block a sidequest even if the person is still present and could talk to you, but inexplicably won't.. If you're going to play, just spoil yourself and reference a Toaster Items spoiler or you'll miss many things. Some of this is intentional, sometimes an action you take alters the town you're in and it would no longer make sense for the sidequest to work (Like causing some NPC to leave town), but IMO it is just too easy for this to happen as you aren't given a hint that it could happen.

Does Wasteland 2 have some flaws? Certainly, but so does every other game. Wasteland 2, like any other great game, has only small flaws and I highly recommend it.

I recently spent 135 hours on my first play through so I obviously enjoyed the game. It is truly the sequel to 1988's Wasteland game containing many of the same plot devices and situations. I fear many of the red votes here are from users that expected Fallout 2.5, not Wasteland 2.

The bad: The attributes don't have much influence on the characters skills or abilities, enemy melee fighters can walk up to your toes on their first round, and the special dialog choices I was hoping for were just a one-line comment and some xp. The combat was fairly fun but I'm not big on combat anyway. I play crpg's for the plot twists and convoluted dialog trees so was very disappointed with the special dialog.

The Good: There are some great conversations, and the inter-faction rivalries are quite clever if you take the time to screw people over and change alliances on the fly. The game has no good/bad morality, just shades of gray. I plan to play the game again making totally different choices just to see new content.

Again, it's not Fallout! It doesn't have prone firing or aimed shots, you can't play as a loner or search for the G.e.c.k. either. Fallout is a great game but it is a different game. Besides, if Obsidian had made it any closer to Fallout canon Zenimax would have sued them and we'd never have gotten to play it.

A very good game despite its bugs when it first came out. I finished the game and that is huge coming from me who gets bored easily with games nowadays.

Ignore the naysayers, W2 is an awesome game. Interesting story, solid mechanics, isometric view, party oriented adventure. If you ever wished for a "better" Fallout: Tactics, this is IT. There are some balance issues here and there, but nothing worth bashing the game for. I think a lot of the red reviews come from ppl who thought W2 would be Fallout 2 reborn. Grow up ppl. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To think I almost did not buy this game. But when a deal appeared on Steam I went for it. Now I am completely hooked. It is so refreshing to be required to actually think and make choices in games these days. I love the humour of WL2 and the manner in which it ramps up the difficulty and options. It has been a long time since I have played a game with such a strong "one-more-turn" feeling. This game takes old-school game concepts and really brings them up to date. I want to see more games like this made. Expand

I`m a huge fan of old Fallout series. Wasteland 2 gives me felling of that word which i love in Fallout. Music of Mark Morgan hit me again. Battle are similar to Fallout Tactics. The only negative is going to graphic design. In some places it`s erratic and low budget. But after all its not a big problem.

Wasteland 2, for the most part, provides everything that its Kickstarter backers and fans of the genre are looking for.

If you're a fan of this style of game and have played the best recent releases, look behind you. Because that's where Wasteland 2 is going to be.

The epitome of old-school that doesn't reek of decay. There are a few bumps along the road, but oh, is it a road worth taking. [Issue#246]
