After some years of updates the game really changed. More fast paced and fun.

If you like ARPG, this is a must try game! I see this as a average between Diablo 3 and PoE. It's not as hardcore as PoE, but it's not as basic as Diablo 3. The Developers are actively communicating through Steam and troubleshooting issues reported. A new Character DLC was just launch (something like a Summoner class) and another one is coming which will add Adeptus Sororitas to the game.

The best Warhammer 40k game I've ever had a chance to play in. The amazing atmosphere, the well-reproduced world of W40k, Endgame is a must for W40k fans,

This game is great! Don't ENTIRELY ignore the negative reviews, but pay attention to the fact that the vast majority are about the BETA, and have little to nothing to do with the actual release.

I've been a fan of the W40K series since Dawn of War, and have played [almost] every game they've put out since then. This one ties with DoW as my favorite in the entire expanded universe.

I've been a fan of the W40K series since Dawn of War, and have played [almost] every game they've put out since then. This one ties with DoW as my favorite in the entire expanded universe. It's not perfect, but it has good "bones", and if the devs update and tweak it with integrity, it has the potential to be one of the best ARPGs ever.

    GOOD
    --Artwork/ visuals
--Being set in the W40K universe
--Plot is not SUPER strong, but it's good enough to drive the game, and does justice to the W40K universe
--Non-linear gameplay allows for development, side-questing, and grinding in different ways
--Gear-based skills mean that you can choose the way you want to fight
--Controls are fairly simple and intuitive (I remapped most of them, but the core concept is really solid)
--Amazing degree of customization and variability in terms of visuals, gameplay, characters builds, and mission selection.

    CONS
--Lack of variety: in 15+ hrs, I have only fought two and a half factions (Rebels, Chaos, and demons summoned by Chaos) in three different types of settings (corrupted spaceship, tundra world, war-torn military-industrial world). Maybe i'm just scratching the surface and much more is to come, but there is no indication of that yet.
--EXTREMELY complicated stats system. There are a ton of them, and they have different and seemingly contradictory "levels" of implementation. Item Power, Quality, and stats are not directly related to each other, but all apply to the same items. This either makes no sense, or is not at all explained.
--Gear-based skills mean your abilities feel like a product of your weapon, not your character. This is a nit-picky thing; and frankly, I'll gladly take this over Diablo 3 where you're pigeon-holed into playing the game a certain way (at higher difficulties), but many of the skills have nuanced differences at best.
    --Sub-classes seem superfluous.

Most importantly, this game has good "bones". It still needs a bit of tweaking and some game elements should probably be redesigned, but the core of the game is very solid. If the devs do a good job of maintaining and updating this, and fleshing out the weaker parts, it has a LOT of strong ones to stand on.

I can't give this a perfect score, because it does have flaws, but they are not fatal flaws, and can easily be fixed. A good example of this is the sub-classes. Your primary class determines the weapons (and therefore skills) you can use-- which is fine-- but the sub-class only determines your starting equipment. After the first "prologue" missions, you can equip whatever you want, regardless of your sub-class.

The best way to fix this (in my opinion) is to limit certain skill trees to certain sub-classes. As it stands, there are 24 skills trees, each of which has some 15+ nodes. Not every class can access every tree, and most of them are locked at the beginning of the game, but you've got literally hundreds of stat- or skill-boosting nodes to choose from... and you only get one every level. As you might expect, most of these nodes have a fairly minimal impact on your character. So if the nodes were make more powerful, and only certain subclasses could access certain skill trees, it would greatly differentiate play-styles between sub-classes. So this is a mechanic that-- in my opinion-- needs to be tweaked, but doesn't need to be rebuilt; the "core" of the system is quite strong.

And a lot of the game is like that: great ideas that just need to be polished a bit. If the devs keep up with that, this game will transition from being "really good" to one of the best ARPGs of all time.

Great game! Fun and tactical, slower paced which I like. For the emperor! P.S this game got a lot of bad reviews due to unstable servers on launch day and from the beta/early access period. Actual release is miles better!

A wonderful 40k experience. Great graphics, great atmosphere, the story is actually engaging, and the game is well made with depth of character development. The dialogue can be a bit goofy at times and combat a bit slow with big HP enemies but those instances are few and far between. Would give it a 9/10 but need to compensate for the people that give it 0/10's for minor things.

The game is beautiful (in that horrid desolate way) but there are definitely some bugs. if you are a warhammer 40k fan like me and you actually played the table top game...youll be excited as to how true they stick to the core elements of the game. From mastercraft weapons, to slowed movement using two handed or heavy weapons versus one handed and beyond. Lot's of people have been complaining about the cover system but i've enjoyed it. Not only because it's a critical element of the original game but also because it adds an interesting characteristic to fighting, whether you are hiding behind it or kiting enemies around it.

Every weapon has a play style and every class can be played and specced to a play style synchronously.

Slow is nice, you get to feel your weapons and you have to play tactically to your equipment.

A huge thing this game has is fully designed rooms and open path maps. Not just maze style dungeons with N entrances and N exits and N paths between so they can maintain a single camera angle. I love the fact that you can utilize camera angle and it actually becomes a necessary part of the gameplay unlike most other ARPG's

The atmosphere, story, weapons and characters are perfect and ultimately capture every essence of Warhammer 40k. Progression looks promising. I like that your skill tree defines how your character plays and feels not just the abilities your character is ultimately boxed into using.
Loot is well provided, bosses guarding chests and plenty of good loot. Bosses are difficult and so is the majority of the gameplay.

My biggest gripe is that i end up at the "base" after every mission when I want to just seamlessly move from mission to mission and there are some wonky animations.

Some minor complaints like some weapon effects sound very weak (Plasma Guns), Campaign cant be done in Coop (only random missions). But overall a pretty fun and good game. At first i wasnt very impressed, but once you get into it and play a few missions it just seems to get better and better! Recommended, especially for WH40K fans.

This is ARPG at its best. Its complex and does not hold you hand means hours and hours in it will be surprising you with amazing things.
I reminds me on another ARPG that I loved on release but many simpletons couldn't get their head around so they just rated it low and complained about it, a little game called "Path Of Exile". Just like POE Martyr it being unfairly reviewed by people

Combat doesn't have to be pinpoint a twitch sensitive, its about the building of the character and the variation, and Martyr has those things in spades.

Very much the "40K Diablo" I hoped for. Spot on grimdark atmosphere, great graphics, smooth gameplay, motivating progression mechanics & loot. And the devs have planned content for years to come. Game has improved GREATLY in all aspects (graphics, character & armor models, speed & smoothhness) since last Early Access build, btw. Absolutely love it.

I really love this game. Im not a hardcore W40K fan in the sense i dont know about the games and lore.
I have in many years painted figures and loved the fantasy about it.
And this game gives me just that. It is a tactical ARPG and thus it feels slower than say Diablo3 (way slower) But i find this a good thing since this isnt a game i want to rush like Diablo. The story isnt the best in

The variety of weaponry armor and builds is amazing. I really love games where you can tailor your build down to the last detail.
On the technical side i have found no bugs so far (1.0.6c) And the sound and graphics are fantastic in my opinion. Controling is fluid though it can be hard to find the right spot to cover.
All in all this is one of those few games where it tickles my brain to come back to my PC :D

It's actually a really fun ARPG, and the only real detractor to it are these bugs, which are getting fixed by what seems like the day. So if you were worried about purchasing a buggy game, don't be. I'd watch some Youtube videos to make sure that it's your style of game, it's similar to yet different from Diablo 3. Expand

Stash tabs and sort function, basic loot filter, quick sell, detailed explanation of mechanics (additive/multiplicative bonuses etc.) and generally a very clean UI for all the content it has.
There is a somewhat useless cover system that you can simply ignore. The suppression mechanic to shield from status effects on the other hand is very useful and I wouldn't be surprised to see it implemented in similar games.

Item hunting can be a bit of a pain, because there are too many item drops and sorting/selling/salvaging them out takes quite some time when you're not familiar with what to keep. It would be better if unlocked stats could be put on items instead or if there simply were less relic drops.
Ancient relic stats are unlocked by ingame challenges. Nice concept, but again, there are too many of them, it forces you to constantly change your build and most of them are not really useful in the end.

The advantage of the 40k universe is that it actually offers a decent story with a lot of interesting background if you want to get into it. It's still very straight forward monster killing, but with a reasonable explanation behind it.

With the game being on sale on Steam, this was certainly one of the best deals I've made and a better purchase than the recent Diablo iterations for sure.

The main reason being that you could not access your inventory during game-play to swap gear or inspect newly looted items. This was changed in a later patch. Animations and certain actions have been sped up, so the game-play is more fluid and in line with other ARPGs. And you can now access the inventory and swap gear mid-game if you loot a new item you want to try out. The only issue I really have with the game is it's itemization. The info on the item tooltips and the method the game uses for determining if a piece of gear is better than another is very un-intuitive. And feels very forced. Also, if you're used to ARPGs like Diablo,a lot of the gear in this game is probably not very exciting. I haven't seen any gear with interesting set bonuses like in other ARPGs. All the gear that I've found so far seem to be stand alone pieces. Pretty standard items. Aside from that though, I really enjoy the gameplay and the character customization. What the game lacks in interesting gear it makes up for in the many "perks",attributes, and "talents" that you can specialize in. In this area, this game has D3 beat. It's not as deep as a game like Path of Exile, but it's much more robust than Diablo 3. If you like those two games, then I think you will also enjoy this one. It's probably worth mentioning that if you like playing spell casters there is,indeed, a spell-caster type class in this game. It's not all guns and hand grenades. You can also play as a heavy-armor wearing, shield and sword type character as well. Over-all, I feel the game is pretty good. I've noticed there are reviews here from almost two years ago. I didn't play that far back,so I don't know how the launch went. But I can tell you that the game is not some big "mess" like some of these older, overly dramatic reviews claim. I just read one review that said the game's performance is atrocious with constant frame drops. I am playing on a gaming rig I built over ten years ago and I have no issues with frame drops. The game runs well even on my machine. I just have to turn things like shadows down. Which is more than reasonable for such an old pc. Like I said, I find the game very enjoyable. Coming from other ARPGs where everything is either swords or magic, it's nice blowing things up with rockets and grenades. Or blasting them to pieces with heavy machine-guns,grenade launchers, and flamethrowers. =) Expand
