Weapons don't feel impactful on their target. Feels like you're hitting a sandbag with a foam sword, until it explodes for some reason.

The AI is dumb as dirt. I know action rpgs aren't known for having any sort of competent AI that would use tactics and cover instead of just swarming the player with huge numbers, but in this game the AI is even dumber than that, often times it even "forgets" where it was supposed to go.

The graphics engine seems to have some sort of limitations. Like, for example, mobs that are some distance away from the player, have fewer animation frames than the ones that are closer, and it looks terrible, like the enemies at long range move in slow-mo or something. This may be a valid design to help with potato computers, but I don't bust my ass to buy an expensive computer and then play games that are designed for potatoes and don't use all the resources available.

Only great things are the atmosphere and the scenery. Hell, if this wasn't a WH40k game, and just some random action rpg, I would drop 1 point from the score.

Overall, this game is slightly above average and only really appealing to WH40k fans. Everyone else will find it a 6/10: AVERAGE!

I was considering giving it a 0, just to counter balance those 10/10 ratings. I mean seriously, guys?! This is a 10/10 game?! You are making the gaming industry worse for all of us if you give such high scores to average games.

Many of the crucial aspects have yet to be remedied and the launch of the first 'community event' is a catastrophe of immense proportions. Even though the community has some how almost reached the ludicrous goal of 50 million kills on missions that barely pass 150/ each leaves me speechless.

The goal of 5k per player is even more insane, that's almost 50 missions over the span of one weekend; adults have jobs and lives outside of hobbies; I sincerely wish Neocore would consider this when creating 'community events'. I would like to see the numbers and accounts associated with them, I have a strong feeling that the numbers are being spoofed.

I am still working through the game, but this is my initial impression, it is good. However, it is not perfect, ranging from forgivable minor errors that can, and likely will be, worked out to glaring and egregious errors. The primary reason behind my rating is the online only requirement, it is both an annoying and limiting disappointment. I immensely agree with Thelgor140's review.

I understand their reasons, but it doesn't change the fact that it negatively impacts my experience as a player that is just trying to enjoy the game. Monster Hunter World handles this much better; I would appreciate an "opt-in/out" feature. Play online some days, others, just go and purge some Heretics. I hope they find a way around this because this is something that annoys me significantly and is actually what gives this game a 7.

The lore is good, the story is okay so far––but justified by the lore––so good and immersive, could be better.

Being that we're Inquisitors, I would imagine a bit of customization being possible/ if not male/female variants and some basic customization just for the sake of variety. We're not Astartes, Imperial Guards nor the Sisters of Battle. We are what they fear, we are the Inquisition. Most lore makes out many Inquisitors being eccentric in their own rights, from appearances to demeanor. From Puritanical Lawful Enforcers of the Emprah's Will , to radical ends-justify-the-means protectors of humanity.

Just, Eisenhorn. If you're looking for a good book, Eisenhorn. There is other material, but this is a good entry point to the lore, other than the Dark Heresy Pen and Paper games by Fantasy Flight Games––I sincerely hope the GW works with them again––which I play and love.

And about Dark Heresy, each of the three (so far) playable classes are archetypes found in Dark Heresy's core rule book.

I will get back to this when I have more time into it.

    2) You do not need ANY skills or tactics for this game - because as already said, it's always the same. You do not need any skills or tactics, just mindlessly click on the enemies, that's it.

    3) Items are a joke. At character level 40 I am still running around in my level 2 armor because I can not get killed anyway - even if I play missions on the "impossible" difficulty level. This game is so stupidly easy that I can play it with one hand while eating dinner.

    4) And the worst of all are the bugs. The game isn't optimized at all - lag, stutter, graphics bugs, 100% GPU usage in the freakin' menu, the usual server disconnects that you get all the time, game mechanics not working etc. pp.

Conclusion: I would not even buy this game if it costs below 10$. Paying 50 or 60 bucks for it is just insane.

I am a veteran of the ARPG genre, having over 4,000 hours logged in diablo 3, PoE, and Torchlight. I will explain, in detail what is so bad about this game. (i got to lvl 12 btw)

    1) First off (and my biggest issue) is that the characters aren't what determine your skills. so i picked a sniper character thinking 'oh cool, ill be able to level up my snipe skills and get really good at going in cloaked and then surprise attacking!' nope. the skills are attached to the weapons that you swap out every mission for upgraded weapons, and there's no way to upgrade those skills. the only things that you have upgrades to are a really weird skill tree system that gives you small non-game-changing bonuses like +1% dmg. cause ya know, that's fun.
If you get lucky you can find a weapon with a set of skills that your really like, like the sword i got had a leap with a poison AoE, but then i was stuck using that weapon and didn't want to swap out for the weapon that i knew was better, and had higher dmg and power level. really seems like the core of the game was made wrong.

    2) second reason is that the game feels extremely slow. the hack & slash game play of the great ARPGs is not present in this game. you start a level where you walk very slowly through hallways (they say this is tactical) and pick off very small groups of enemies (groups of about 2-3). and after about 20 minutes of this, you eventually run into an elite guy that can take a few shots. this guy isn't fun either though.. you can either just LoS (line of sight) him until you wither him down, or just face tank him because he doesn't actually hit hard (even on hard difficulty). If you happen to encounter a boss enemy you might actually get to use your skills!

    3) third reason is the loot... or i should say the lack of loot. it really feels like they just put random colors on the items and had them be generated from a pool of randomly selected stats with no balance. like i said before i come from the diablo 3 community and it seems like there should be certain stats on certain items and not on other items, but instead, i got grenades that regenerate my health. yeah that makes sense. also the rate at which loot drops seems very low.

    4) fourth reason is enemy variation. i know the destiny games got made fun of for this, but this game is a lot worse. there's about 12 different enemies that I've fought in my time playing the game, and about 8 of them die in 1 hit before they can even act, so then we are left with those things that just look like strongmen wearing leather vests and the big robot walkers that shoot missiles. if you like only fighting these 2 things, this game is for you!

    5) fifth reason not to get this game is that you cant play the missions that you want to play, co-op. if you initiate the co-op computer (its literally a thing on your ship) it plops you into a random mission where you just kill all the baddies. no progression on story. no choices.

i will say this. the game has really nice graphics - like where the bosses shoot missiles that track to you, so ill give this game 3 points for the graphics and 1 point for the fact that the game actually works and doesn't crash/isn't buggy. other than that though, if you are an experienced ARPG player, this is not the game for you. the leveling feels like a slog and the rewards for leveling just aren't there.
if you are just a warhammer 40k fan, then please by all means try the game out. it is stylized the way i expect warhammer games to be. but don't think that this is how all ARPGs are.

This game is advertised as "an open-world sandbox game with a persistent universe" when really, none of that seems to be true at all. It reads like an algorithm line meant to hook into search engines. Like those Elsa Spider-Man Youtube videos. Or it's really a case of developers just using buzzwords they know people like these days, but not really understanding them. You can select stages to play, with a fancy transition effect, but there is no world to explore. Just instanced maps of interconnected chambers and hallways.
    Progression sucks.
In the ARPG/RPG genre, there are usually two schools of thought on leveling:
    1. Player levels slowly, but each level grants a large amount of power.
    2. Player levels quickly, with each level being a smaller increase.

Co-op is unplayable due to intense lag and desynching.

Currently the game is a mess. They have already launched it after several months of beta and weeks on delay over the oficial date just to release a broken game without any end game content, several broken mechanics, graphical and game breaking bugs, and the worse balancing seen in years.

    The key points:
    - Open world and Persistent: To put it easy, it's just a plain lie. The game is neither open word (no more than Path of Exile) nor persistent it's a pure blatant lie.
    - Graphics: Graphics are ok but the performance is atrocious. With a 7700k at 5Ghz and a 1080 i get framedrops to the 10th fps level and in ocasions the game plays like a powerpoint.
    - Content: Game leght is 10h if you dont count grind as content, the history is regular (not very good but at least have a wh40k feeling) but it's too short and you are just releyed to repeat the same missions again and again and again in a grindfest of 50h-100h depending on the class to reach the end game level. All the content is just plain grind, for example first even was just kill 5000 mobs, not more not less..
    - Mechanics: Half the mechanics are just wrong or not working at all, for example cover is just a mimic (is a lot more safer just shoot the enemy that take cover and then shoot), the "Open World" are just the same small maps (2 min leght to clean them, with veeeery minor variations) that repeat each time till you could make them with the eyes closed, they dont are even remotely random.
    - Loot: You have a loot driven game that have a mechanic that force you to replace your items with new and inferior ones or have a damage done and damage receive penalties (in the order of 200% or 80% damage done penaltie to make a full 20% damage), i could not even think what the hell the developers where thinking.
    - End Game: Simple, Don't exist at the moment.
    - Class balancing: Don't exist at the moment, after months of beta, they didnt have time to balance the classes. A good 20%-40% of perks are not working properly.
    - Grind: It's only what exist at the moment, you need to run 10 basic missions to have the curency to run an "advanced" (Tarot) missions, one mission is 1/20 in xp of a Tarot or main quest mission, and you only have quest misions to reach lv20 of the 50 levels. And as they dont have any end game currently they have even increased the grind from lauch to have the people grind more and need more time to reach the non existing end game.
Also, the dificulty is non existing, they match dificulty with repeat the same again and again till your eyes bleed.Of the hundreds of missions done to reach lv50 i think that iv'e failed maybe one and just because i was not paying attention and doing the level mechanically.
    - Coop or Pvp is unplayable due lag.
    - You need online connection not to play the game, just because the developers use it as a cheap anti-piracy. You could even continue playing a mission after the server goes down and dont crash till you end the mission and the game tried to store the mission rewards.
    - The game is full of cheaters, cheat is as easy (or at least was) as editing the game resource files, not to talk of more "complex" cheats of trainers and memory editting. If the missions the game never makes any calculations on the server (it dont even need the conection to the server) and is all made client side. You could have a player with several thousand of kills less than an hour after an event goes online.

This game is great! Don't ENTIRELY ignore the negative reviews, but pay attention to the fact that the vast majority are about the BETA, and have little to nothing to do with the actual release.

I've been a fan of the W40K series since Dawn of War, and have played [almost] every game they've put out since then. This one ties with DoW as my favorite in the entire expanded universe.

I've been a fan of the W40K series since Dawn of War, and have played [almost] every game they've put out since then. This one ties with DoW as my favorite in the entire expanded universe. It's not perfect, but it has good "bones", and if the devs update and tweak it with integrity, it has the potential to be one of the best ARPGs ever.

    GOOD
    --Artwork/ visuals
--Being set in the W40K universe
--Plot is not SUPER strong, but it's good enough to drive the game, and does justice to the W40K universe
--Non-linear gameplay allows for development, side-questing, and grinding in different ways
--Gear-based skills mean that you can choose the way you want to fight
--Controls are fairly simple and intuitive (I remapped most of them, but the core concept is really solid)
--Amazing degree of customization and variability in terms of visuals, gameplay, characters builds, and mission selection.

    CONS
--Lack of variety: in 15+ hrs, I have only fought two and a half factions (Rebels, Chaos, and demons summoned by Chaos) in three different types of settings (corrupted spaceship, tundra world, war-torn military-industrial world). Maybe i'm just scratching the surface and much more is to come, but there is no indication of that yet.
--EXTREMELY complicated stats system. There are a ton of them, and they have different and seemingly contradictory "levels" of implementation. Item Power, Quality, and stats are not directly related to each other, but all apply to the same items. This either makes no sense, or is not at all explained.
--Gear-based skills mean your abilities feel like a product of your weapon, not your character. This is a nit-picky thing; and frankly, I'll gladly take this over Diablo 3 where you're pigeon-holed into playing the game a certain way (at higher difficulties), but many of the skills have nuanced differences at best.
    --Sub-classes seem superfluous.

Most importantly, this game has good "bones". It still needs a bit of tweaking and some game elements should probably be redesigned, but the core of the game is very solid. If the devs do a good job of maintaining and updating this, and fleshing out the weaker parts, it has a LOT of strong ones to stand on.

I can't give this a perfect score, because it does have flaws, but they are not fatal flaws, and can easily be fixed. A good example of this is the sub-classes. Your primary class determines the weapons (and therefore skills) you can use-- which is fine-- but the sub-class only determines your starting equipment. After the first "prologue" missions, you can equip whatever you want, regardless of your sub-class.

The best way to fix this (in my opinion) is to limit certain skill trees to certain sub-classes. As it stands, there are 24 skills trees, each of which has some 15+ nodes. Not every class can access every tree, and most of them are locked at the beginning of the game, but you've got literally hundreds of stat- or skill-boosting nodes to choose from... and you only get one every level. As you might expect, most of these nodes have a fairly minimal impact on your character. So if the nodes were make more powerful, and only certain subclasses could access certain skill trees, it would greatly differentiate play-styles between sub-classes. So this is a mechanic that-- in my opinion-- needs to be tweaked, but doesn't need to be rebuilt; the "core" of the system is quite strong.

And a lot of the game is like that: great ideas that just need to be polished a bit. If the devs keep up with that, this game will transition from being "really good" to one of the best ARPGs of all time.

This is the game where u want to be W40k character ARPG. I must recommend the game 10/10 if u are W40k player or just someone from community. Others go to play SIMS or something else.

Great game! Fun and tactical, slower paced which I like. For the emperor! P.S this game got a lot of bad reviews due to unstable servers on launch day and from the beta/early access period. Actual release is miles better!

A wonderful 40k experience. Great graphics, great atmosphere, the story is actually engaging, and the game is well made with depth of character development. The dialogue can be a bit goofy at times and combat a bit slow with big HP enemies but those instances are few and far between. Would give it a 9/10 but need to compensate for the people that give it 0/10's for minor things.

The game is beautiful (in that horrid desolate way) but there are definitely some bugs. if you are a warhammer 40k fan like me and you actually played the table top game...youll be excited as to how true they stick to the core elements of the game. From mastercraft weapons, to slowed movement using two handed or heavy weapons versus one handed and beyond. Lot's of people have been complaining about the cover system but i've enjoyed it. Not only because it's a critical element of the original game but also because it adds an interesting characteristic to fighting, whether you are hiding behind it or kiting enemies around it.

Every weapon has a play style and every class can be played and specced to a play style synchronously.

Slow is nice, you get to feel your weapons and you have to play tactically to your equipment.

A huge thing this game has is fully designed rooms and open path maps. Not just maze style dungeons with N entrances and N exits and N paths between so they can maintain a single camera angle. I love the fact that you can utilize camera angle and it actually becomes a necessary part of the gameplay unlike most other ARPG's

The atmosphere, story, weapons and characters are perfect and ultimately capture every essence of Warhammer 40k. Progression looks promising. I like that your skill tree defines how your character plays and feels not just the abilities your character is ultimately boxed into using.
Loot is well provided, bosses guarding chests and plenty of good loot. Bosses are difficult and so is the majority of the gameplay.

My biggest gripe is that i end up at the "base" after every mission when I want to just seamlessly move from mission to mission and there are some wonky animations.

Some minor complaints like some weapon effects sound very weak (Plasma Guns), Campaign cant be done in Coop (only random missions). But overall a pretty fun and good game. At first i wasnt very impressed, but once you get into it and play a few missions it just seems to get better and better! Recommended, especially for WH40K fans.

This is ARPG at its best. Its complex and does not hold you hand means hours and hours in it will be surprising you with amazing things.
I reminds me on another ARPG that I loved on release but many simpletons couldn't get their head around so they just rated it low and complained about it, a little game called "Path Of Exile". Just like POE Martyr it being unfairly reviewed by people

Combat doesn't have to be pinpoint a twitch sensitive, its about the building of the character and the variation, and Martyr has those things in spades.

Very much the "40K Diablo" I hoped for. Spot on grimdark atmosphere, great graphics, smooth gameplay, motivating progression mechanics & loot. And the devs have planned content for years to come. Game has improved GREATLY in all aspects (graphics, character & armor models, speed & smoothhness) since last Early Access build, btw. Absolutely love it.

I really love this game. Im not a hardcore W40K fan in the sense i dont know about the games and lore.
I have in many years painted figures and loved the fantasy about it.
And this game gives me just that. It is a tactical ARPG and thus it feels slower than say Diablo3 (way slower) But i find this a good thing since this isnt a game i want to rush like Diablo. The story isnt the best in

The variety of weaponry armor and builds is amazing. I really love games where you can tailor your build down to the last detail.
On the technical side i have found no bugs so far (1.0.6c) And the sound and graphics are fantastic in my opinion. Controling is fluid though it can be hard to find the right spot to cover.
All in all this is one of those few games where it tickles my brain to come back to my PC :D

It's actually a really fun ARPG, and the only real detractor to it are these bugs, which are getting fixed by what seems like the day. So if you were worried about purchasing a buggy game, don't be. I'd watch some Youtube videos to make sure that it's your style of game, it's similar to yet different from Diablo 3. Expand

Stash tabs and sort function, basic loot filter, quick sell, detailed explanation of mechanics (additive/multiplicative bonuses etc.) and generally a very clean UI for all the content it has.
There is a somewhat useless cover system that you can simply ignore. The suppression mechanic to shield from status effects on the other hand is very useful and I wouldn't be surprised to see it implemented in similar games.

Item hunting can be a bit of a pain, because there are too many item drops and sorting/selling/salvaging them out takes quite some time when you're not familiar with what to keep. It would be better if unlocked stats could be put on items instead or if there simply were less relic drops.
Ancient relic stats are unlocked by ingame challenges. Nice concept, but again, there are too many of them, it forces you to constantly change your build and most of them are not really useful in the end.

The advantage of the 40k universe is that it actually offers a decent story with a lot of interesting background if you want to get into it. It's still very straight forward monster killing, but with a reasonable explanation behind it.

With the game being on sale on Steam, this was certainly one of the best deals I've made and a better purchase than the recent Diablo iterations for sure.

Wanted to try this game out, unfortunately it put me on a "You need a Neocore account" screen that i couldn't click out of or close. Complete waste of time, so i just uninstalled it. A terrible first time user experience, just let me play and put the register option somewhere on the main menu for players to do later if they want.

The main reason being that you could not access your inventory during game-play to swap gear or inspect newly looted items. This was changed in a later patch. Animations and certain actions have been sped up, so the game-play is more fluid and in line with other ARPGs. And you can now access the inventory and swap gear mid-game if you loot a new item you want to try out. The only issue I really have with the game is it's itemization. The info on the item tooltips and the method the game uses for determining if a piece of gear is better than another is very un-intuitive. And feels very forced. Also, if you're used to ARPGs like Diablo,a lot of the gear in this game is probably not very exciting. I haven't seen any gear with interesting set bonuses like in other ARPGs. All the gear that I've found so far seem to be stand alone pieces. Pretty standard items. Aside from that though, I really enjoy the gameplay and the character customization. What the game lacks in interesting gear it makes up for in the many "perks",attributes, and "talents" that you can specialize in. In this area, this game has D3 beat. It's not as deep as a game like Path of Exile, but it's much more robust than Diablo 3. If you like those two games, then I think you will also enjoy this one. It's probably worth mentioning that if you like playing spell casters there is,indeed, a spell-caster type class in this game. It's not all guns and hand grenades. You can also play as a heavy-armor wearing, shield and sword type character as well. Over-all, I feel the game is pretty good. I've noticed there are reviews here from almost two years ago. I didn't play that far back,so I don't know how the launch went. But I can tell you that the game is not some big "mess" like some of these older, overly dramatic reviews claim. I just read one review that said the game's performance is atrocious with constant frame drops. I am playing on a gaming rig I built over ten years ago and I have no issues with frame drops. The game runs well even on my machine. I just have to turn things like shadows down. Which is more than reasonable for such an old pc. Like I said, I find the game very enjoyable. Coming from other ARPGs where everything is either swords or magic, it's nice blowing things up with rockets and grenades. Or blasting them to pieces with heavy machine-guns,grenade launchers, and flamethrowers. =) Expand

NeoCore noticeably put a lot of effort into Inquisitor – Martyr, but sadly that does not change the fact that the game lags two divisions behind the genre’s greatest. [08/2018, p.66]
