    For those that are new to the game and looking for a great game about tanks and planes (excluding helicopters and naval because those are ass), War Thunder is not for you at the moment. The economy is so bad that you NEED to be a god-like player to play and gain. For now just look the other way and wait for improvements.

    I've played this game since it came out, it used to have an ok progression and economy. But they have made it harder and harder to progress just to force ppl to buy more stuff. Even with prem account and tanks it's a hard grind...

    I genuinely want to be able to recommend this game, the graphics are nice, and there is no other game like it, but it just feels like every update they want to make things worse for you, the grind gets worse and worse, money rewards go down, prices keep going up. It's like the game wants to make you hate playing it.

    I have over 1000 hours in this game, so I'm certified to say that war thunder is almost a really fun game to play. The problem is the "almost" because Gaijin seems to do everything in their power to milk the players dry for money every way they can, from lowering sl rewards for players to making the grind take actual years to finish.     Gainjin removed the steam banner from their site, so I came to review it in case they decide to pull back from steam. Anyway the game is **** at the moment and gaijin is doing nothing to improve it, on the contrary they seem more interested in ruining it more.

    The "free2play" model has been pushed to a pay to play model, confirmed by the developers. After Gaijins condescending letter to the community it is time for change or time to leave.

Bugs left and right, basically terrible game. If you're a new player who wants to play it, please don't. It really isn't worth the mental trouble this game gonna make you go through.     After playing for years I have recently uninstalled the game. I have played both World of Tanks/Warships and this game. The devs of these companies seem to be competing with each other to see who can be the most toxic towards their playerbase. I for one am now done with both games and unless the toxicity of the devs changes for both will likely never return.     Then there is the other hand. The game is very unbalanced using the guise of 'realism'. The economy is complete and udder trash tier. You lose money per match the higher tiers you go even if you're an average or decent player because they include repair costs without the payout to recover those losses. The ability to max out one tree for one faction for one vehicle type can take thousands of hours because of low rewards or the outright punishment of losing money per match.

    Then there is the elephant in the room. The devs are some of the pettiest people I've seen in gaming. Gaslighting and blaming the community when they're finally fed up with bad practices that has been happening for years. Removing negative posts or constructive critisism on their forums and ignoring other means of communication. So petty they removed the steam logo from their website because of the bad reviews from people fed up with their stuff.

    I wrote my original negative review on steam around 2018 calling out these bad practices and finally people are waking up to it after recent controversies. Nice to have you guys finally on board. Don't get complacent and let Gaijin know that their practices are no longer acceptable. Don't stop at a small step to 'fix' the economy, demand them balance the game, fix the bugs, and finally listen to the people who actually give a crap.

    The game gets a 1/10 until the problems are fixed and that 1 is just because there is a good game under the hood of a destroyed economy.    … Expand

If you knock down your opponent, you get 2,000, but if you fall, you lose 10,000. If you want to make money, you have to knock down five people like you to make money. But the developer thinks it's normal to get 1,000 silver and lose 15,000 silver with the new update. I think this is abnormal and not normal, and I can see that the game company is very hostile to users… Expand

    Playing without a premium account totally misses the point, you will rarely be able to collect enough points to come out on plus with Silver Lions.     One of the most frustrating and simultaneously "satisfying" games I've ever played. The grind in this supposed free-to-play game starts around rank III vehicles and the RP (Research Points) and SL (Silver Lion) costs skyrocket from there.

    While it is fun to collect rare and valuable vehicles, it requires an abhorrent amount of time and effort to complete seasonal challenges to get them.    One of the most frustrating and simultaneously "satisfying" games I've ever played. The grind in this supposed free-to-play game starts around rank III vehicles and the RP (Research Points) and SL (Silver Lion) costs skyrocket from there.

    While it is fun to collect rare and valuable vehicles, it requires an abhorrent amount of time and effort to complete seasonal challenges to get them. The requirements for these seasonal challenges and events increases in difficulty each year.

    The playerbase is incredibly toxic and hostile, no-doubt caused by the frustrating grind and "cheesy" tactics and vehicles used by some players. Gaijin sells vehicles and offers nations, on a rotating basis, overpowered aircraft and tanks, nerfing them after sales slump to appease the complaints of the playerbase.

    Overall, I would NOT recommend this game to anyone until Gaijin becomes a more customer-focused business and introduces fun into their game.

    * EDIT 05/18/2023: This game is still terrible, don't play it and waste your time or money. Gaijin doesn't care about its playerbase, and it never has. It's increasingly clear that there are no actual developers working on this game, only code monkeys with little scripting ability that simply put commissioned assets into the game.    … Expand

    Cute, but no. The game will lose players right when it stops providing enough of regular non-premium currency to enjoy playing the vehicles they EARNED by playing. The player is punished for sinking the time into earning a higher tiered vehicle and will have to play each match with this vehicle in looming anxiety over underperforming in a match and losing money. When enough of those bad matches happen where the player loses in-game money instead of earning it they will be pretty much blocked from playing that specific vehicle because the earnings will never outweigh the repair costs.

    And when do the earnings outweigh the repair costs? When you purchase a premium vehicle. Don't fall for the blatantly corporate-speech written blog posts providing you with reasons defending why you can't play matches with your Abrams or F-14 for several days.

    The audacity of Gaijin to teach us what it means to progress in a F2P game. Gaijin spits in your face and expects you to take it like a little **** and kiss their feet for it.

    If you value your time invested in a game and expect it to respect that time don't even bother installing this. This may have once been the best game in its genre but those days are long gone, stomped by greed and disrespect into the ground. Gaijin doesn't deserve your time, let alone your money.    … Expand

    Broken vehicle models. Bad map balance. Bad netcode. Devs ignore issues and rather keep adding stuff to chanel the attention elsewhere. Massive grind. Smurfs.     The developers are doing their absolute best to make f2p players quit the game. The economy sucks, a lot of bugs aren't fixed despite many bug reports from players and if this isn't enough some premium vehicles are much better than their tech tree counterparts. My advice is don't waste your time and go play something else.

I try to enjoy this game but that's hard to do nowadays with how the have the economy. I no longer can just unlock stuff by playing    this game is no longer about enjoyment or fun, it's just purely about profits. things have gotten bad
    to the point where grinding out a full tech tree within a year is difficult. and that's for the people who spend money on fancy tanks with high multipliers. I no longer can just unlock stuff by playing my favorite tank or plane I have to use something high tier if I want to unlock something in a reasonable amount of time. even then its a challenge to enjoy something when I am forced to use a premium just because I don't want to wait a few weeks to unlock something in tier 7 or 8 I cant unlock things in 4-6 tiers either withought putting in such unreasonable hours it becomes a part time job. I just cant play this game anymore. I shouldn't be forced to pay the game for dying either. I would lose money while playing the french. Why? However, Gaijin's anti-gamer behavior, unethical, miserable, disastrous, despondent, hopeless, selfish, discriminatory, shameful and hopeless operating methods are increasingly destroying the original value of the game.     Dev team became greedy and tried to milk their already too-forgiving player base even further than they've already had, If you wanted to enjoy war thunder, build a time machine and travel back to when ground battles were first added, or even further back and go back to when it first came out.

    The economy is horrible, the grind is endless, half of the games mechanics don't function properly, and you're basically forced to buy a premium subscription plus a premium vehicle just to progress at a barely tolerable rate.

    War thunder is genuinely a great game. With well designed models of the machines of War and cooperative online battles it would be criminal to assume that the game won't do good. However there is one major flag with this game that the community cam no longer bear. And that is the blatant disregard for the players time and community well being. However there is one major flag with this game that the community cam no longer bear. And that is the blatant disregard for the players time and community well being. Gaijin entertainment has proven they are out of touch with the community by continues making one of the most complaint problem in the game even worse, the ingame economy. In war thunder you progress with Silver Lions and Research Points. You will receive RP (Research points) and SL (Silver Lions) through in game activities such as getting a kill, an assist, capturing the objective, hitting enemies and critically hitting enemies. Its easy to get the in game currency in war thunder however the amount you earn is what is the issue. In later tiers you have to start worrying about the repair cost of a vehicle you use, the repair cost being the SL you have to spend to repair your vehicle to be able to use it again in your next game. There are some vehicles in this game that are not worth using because of the risk of loosing the money you made in the one game because you were destroyed in that very expensive vehicle. So your progression is bound to stagnate. There is a premium currency as well called Golden Eagles. Now GE (Golden Eagles) can be used to purchase premium vehicles, cosmetics, loot boxes, crew slots, Crew XP, Modifications, SL, convertible RP, Event Missions, the Battlepass... you get my point. GE is not easy to obtain as a F2P player as the only way you get them is via login bonus rewards or Golden wagers. Wagers in this game is very difficult to complete as you're tasked with needing to score a ridiculous amount of kills 10 times in a row without failing 3 times to receive the maximum reward. Those are standard SL wagers. The premium wagers are setup to make you fail with the neigh on impossible requirements to get the wager completed.

    The in game economy recently got scuffed further with another update to it that nobody in the community wanted. Some vehicles were given a better SL reward to loss ratio but for the majority of the affected vehicles it was made worse. The community complained on the forums and on reddit to no avail.

    The community has no rallied against Gaijin entertainment with the demands to fix the economy. Only then will they stop review bombing War Thunder. Clock is Ticking Gaijin. I still love this game but if you value your time and sanity do not play this game as it will suck you and your wallet dry in the current state that it is in.    … Expand

    You don't get points for taking off/landing anymore. You don't get points for being in combat/dogfight with ennemies around you anymore. You don't get points for ricochets anymore. You don't get the daily x5 anymore.     They decreased gains from victories from 20% and added 20% to losses (this is bad for anying with a positive win ratio)
    They gutted sim rewards
    They gutted the rewards linked to activity in battle
    They ruined helicopter EC and made them even harder to grind
    Made assists overall harder to get
    The battle passes have 3 vehicles instead of 4, you can't just sell the first vehicles anymore without having to grind even more.    … Expand

    This game is about play to grind, especially when you want to play with modern era vehicles.

    I personally play this game for Realistic Ground Battles so review will be around those. I played Realistic Air Battles in past but do not play them anymore as they are boring. Ships never interested me so I do not bother to even try them.     Modern tanks in War Thunder was reason why I started playing again. It is most interesting part I want to experience as there is basically no alternative (Armored Warfare is dead PvE game). It is a lot of fun to play with modern features on tanks and have planty of mechanics to use however there some huge drawbacks to that.

    1. Grind
    This is one of the most painful thing in game. You cannot just play modern vehicles without grinding entire tech tree full of WWII crapy tanks. The only option is to get high tier premium tank with premium time and play lots of battles with it to get into modern era. Regural grind is just too slow to be viable option for working person. End even with premium tank and account there is still problem with credits as credits rewards are just too low in my opinion.

    2. Matchmaking
    Most of the games you get uptier games. I still do not understand why both Gaijin and Wargaming have to have stupidly large spread for games. Most of time they use word "diversity". I really do not care about diversity of tanks in battle I just want to have fair fight to have fun. It is really not fun to try fights tanks where you struggle to pen frontal weakspot on tank on map where you cannot flank. It is just so frustrating on bad maps.

    3. Maps
    There are a lot of maps that are just not suitable for modern tanks. Some maps are just too small and team that win first wave will just spawn camp second team. Some maps are so open that it result in sniping contest from one spawn to other. Gaijin should make some maps available just for modern tanks and some just for lower tiers. I can't imagine suffer when you get extra large map with slow WWII tank.

    4. Limited time Content
    This is just pure money milking. There are some tanks that can be obtainet during events and this is just plain stupid. If you join game right now you won't be able to get those tank or have to pay ridiculous prices on market. Limited time content alway was and will be cancer of gaming as you locking out potential future players from it.

    5. CAS
    I would love to have option to play tanks only battles. CAS is just feature for frustration. There is no AI protection from CAS. The only counter are AA vehicles but most of time noone plays them from start of the game as they are simply useless until someone spawn in plane or heli. If you kill someone be prepared you mostly die in revenge bombing. In some battles it feels like you are in your tank just NPC to be destroyed by plane or heli. The worst part is you cannot do anzthing about it unles you have AA in your arsenal and even than you will have hard time to shoot them down unless you have good AA.

    I strongly do not recommend any new player to start to play this game. It will be pure frustration if you want to go for modern tanks.

    It is sad that neither WoT or WT does not have any real competition as both Gaijin and Wargaming only wants to milk money their player base and they can do it because there is no other option.    … Expand

    I've been playing this game for over 3 years now. I only play Enduring confrontation in Air Simulation mode. Because it is more real and you can only fly from cockpit view, making it harder to kill other players by just point and click skilless shots.

    Over the last year and a half Gaijin has made it progressively worse to be able to advance in the game. Instead of fixing the bug that    I've been playing this game for over 3 years now. I only play Enduring confrontation in Air Simulation mode. Because it is more real and you can only fly from cockpit view, making it harder to kill other players by just point and click skilless shots.

    Over the last year and a half Gaijin has made it progressively worse to be able to advance in the game. Instead of fixing the bug that farmers exploit they raise repair cost, take away RP rewards while at the same time making it that you can only play high tier with premium vehicles and premium account in realistic mode (which is purely a mouse point and click mode).

    Further more, ALL the vehicles have some kind of bug or problem, VR still has lots of bugs and it doesn't matter how much you report it the don't fit it.

    It seems Gaijin does not to care about making the players happy. I'm 37 years old with wife and kids, if spent over $1500 in this game. Most people don't have infinite amounts of time in their life to grind, we just want to enjoy the game and play for a little bit.

    Gaijin STOP BEING GREEDY FIX THE ECONOMY, MAKE SIM MODE MATCH EC AND AB SL AND RP GAINS....FIX THE EXPLOITS!

    It doesn't matter if it is the economy, matchmaking, maps, vehicles or modules (I just say Free Parts & FPE). The recent events show how bad that situation is.

    One of the cornerstones of War Thunder is that player’s skill is more important than his wallet. Premium vehicles offer no combat advantages, there is no “microtransaction-only” ammo or consumables, so no amount of cash will buy you a spot on the top of the food chain. [Issue#216, p.56]

    The official launch of War Thunder reminded me why I like this game so much. It's adorably chaotic - in contrast to the reliably designed World of Tanks. That's why it can be really fun and frustrating at the same time. There's tons of great vehicles (and the planes are superb!) and a difficult simulation mode, but there are also balance and technical issues.
