A game like a comic book, driven by its snarky story. Gameplay suffers from weak gunplay and repetition, though.

A slightly messy first-person shooter lifted by some excellent weapons and a gorgeous art style.

If more attention was paid to story and less to grind, Void Bastards could potentially rival System Shock. As it is, however, it’s basically just another roguelike. [Issue#241, p.50]

Void Bastards draws easily the attention thanks to its charming comic aesthetic and to the cel shaded visuals. Moreover, its frenetic pace means that you could spend less than an hour at a time and yet feel like you have a fulfilling experience. Alas, the different enemy types and spaceship designs start to get repetitive a little too soon, changing the sense of excitement to tedium far before the rescue of our ragtag group.

The magic of Void Bastards is that, while it’s scary and dangerous and random, it’s also within my control. When I decide to spend my last bit of food to heal myself up before a big fight, I know that I’m giving myself a new task: Find more food or else. When I spend credits to hack a turret, I know that I may stumble on a rare item cache where that money could’ve been better spent.
  2. Void Bastards is ultimately not more than the sum of the parts I outlined 1400 words ago, but it’s worth rummaging through all the same. Just like yer da said about the bins, when he finally found those Euros.

Void Bastards has a great name, a great look, and often great gameplay... when it's not being really annoying....For the most part it's fun and rewarding, and the British accents are employed to great effect. But when it tries to screw with the player, it really bloody screws.

I love Bioshock. I love Prey, Stalker, Deus Ex, and Fallout (New Vegas) lol. This game has some of that , its pretty, and it does have fun moments. There is a but, and it's one that I don't think has been talked about enough because i believe most people write reviews with under an hour play time. The loop gets boring quickly. I said it, and believe me I WANTED TO PLAY THIS GAME FOR MONTHS. But after about 10 hours I really just don't see the point. The missed the mark with lack of story, they could have made a rouge lite with audio logs to push you forward like all the games its trying to be like. The game is good, but don't go in thinking its going to stay fresh for long. Full Review »

Great graphics, great world, bizarre enemies that spout very odd lines, great atmosphere. My only issue is that after playing it a few times, I didn't want to play it again. FPS credentials fine, a bit slow and not entirely complicated. A fun game to load up for a short play. Full Review »

This game is not like/similar/as good as/not even close to FTL! Don't believe people who compare every dull rogue-like game with FTL. (FTLThis game is not like/similar/as good as/not even close to FTL! Don't believe people who compare every dull rogue-like game with FTL. (FTL stands out with an immersive combat system and excellent interlocking system of weapons, upgrades and abilities. That makes this game so great, not the rogue-like rng stuff.)

First of all the graphics are bad - everything looks like Comic Sans. The gunplay is mediocre. The enemies are boring. Levels are procedural generated = soulless goo.
I like FPS, i love FTL, but i couldn't stand this void for longer than 2 hours.

Please stop comparing FTL to rogue-like games of any kind and quality.
