Computer Games MagazineOne of its most remarkable accomplishments is the way gunfights play out like gunfights rather than shooting galleries. [July 2003, p.88]
-
Even though there are a few infuriating missions and some out-of-place voice acting, it feels fairly genuine and is a high quality, unique addition to your shooter collection.
-
Vietcong is everything Platoon should’ve been: realistic, immersive, tense, reasonably flexible, and thoroughly addictive. How ironic that two Czech developers should be the first to create a truly brilliant Vietnam game.
-
The uniqueness of the setting and the Platoon/Full Metal Jacket inspired cut-scenes and soundtrack add a lot to the experience.
-
The game is intense with plenty of surprise attacks and one-shot kills, but it manages to remain fun and entertaining and perhaps even a bit educational. If you have the gear to run it I highly recommend taking this tour of duty.
-
Vietcong strays down the path between arcade shooter and tactical war simulator perfectly, resulting in a game that you’ll find hard to put down.
-
Great graphics driven by a good game engine results in smooth play even when the action gets hot and heavy.
-
During this age of sanitary smart-bomb warfare, this stunning first-person shooter gives you a taste of the good ol’ days of killing—you know, bamboo traps, bloody ambushes, villages under siege.
-
Its technical issues are going to get in the way of some players' enjoyment of an otherwise solid and relatively original first-person shooter, and they'll likely convince other players to avoid the game altogether. Vietcong is still a very good game, however.
-
It’s completely bland and repetitious.
-
Vietcong can provide some tense and enjoyable gameplay, but also serves up some very frustrating levels that will try the patience of many gamers. With a bit more polish and consistent level design Vietcong would be a really good game.
-
They've managed to make a consistent game world and suck the player into it. The fact remains, however, that including more mundane and frustrating elements of real world warfare is a double-edged blade, especially when some of the other technical elements of your game are not up to snuff - like the AI, or clunky engine.
-
Computer Gaming WorldWhile it delivers a much better Vietnam combat experience than you might expect, the graphics can be problematic. [July 2003, p.76]
-
Vietnam was hell, and it's translated well in that way, but unfortunately it just doesn't pass muster leaving us with an average game that could have been great.
-
PC GamerSatisfies as a polished-looking shooter, but needs a more energetic design. [June 2003, p.70]
-
A flawed but rewarding experience seems to be the average diagnosis for most of the current crop of FPS releases, and Vietcong is no exception.
-
But if you can bear to put up with the obvious lack of polish in the graphic and AI department, (similar bugbears that "Hidden & Dangerous" players will confess to), then there's a very absorbing FPS to get to grips with here.
-
Despite all its strengths, it's just much too buggy and unpolished to recommend wholeheartedly.
-
G4 TVExcerpt forthcoming.
-
While being by and large a straight-forward action shooter, it's really aching to be a tactical shooter, and in that vein it's a pity there's not more control over your team members.
-
A very average FPS. While the framerate and graphics engine are a big letdown (these are the same folks responsible for the stellar gangster hit "Mafia"), there is surely enough going for it to turn the heads of jungle warfare aficionados and gamers who just crave anything FPS.
-
Edge MagazineRepetitive and crude, this is a game that is often let down by the rough edges of a development team that didn't seem to have the time or the money to realise its ambitions. [June 2003, p.102]
