Unruly Heroes takes the characters from the "Voyage to the West" and puts them in a fun action platform with a fantastic art style. It's good overall, but there are some downsides. It's good overall, but there are some downsides. First, the art style is amazing but the animations have a certain "made with flash" vibe that I personally find extremely offputting. The controls are good, but coming from Hollow Knight they're not as thight and responsive and they kinda feel heavy and sluggish. Sometimes you feel like you don't have full control on what your character is doing. The platforming is decent and the characters have lots of personality and their different moves are cool, but fighting sometimes feels kind of random due to the controls.

The whole experience is a bit underwhelming and overall it's... just not that fun, I'm not even sure why, maybe it's due to the level design, but it's a shame.

A miniature work of art, full of radiant colors. A pixel perfect animated film. Unbelievably well polished. A candidate for the biggest surprise of the year. [03/2019, p.74]

Unruly Heroes features a mix of platforming and combat with four characters that you can switch between on the fly. With a handful of interesting bosses and plenty of mechanical variation between levels, the game never locks you into one style of play for too long. Ultimately, though, I didn’t find any part of it that much fun to play, which wasn’t helped by its leaden controls and uneven difficulty.

The game may appear to be monotonous since heroes never learn new abilities – but as levels go, they find new applications for skills they already have, so Unruly Heroes never goes stale. [Issue#236, p.36]
