In recent years, there have been a few things which have been widely adored for their wholesomeness. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic set the Internet on fire with its brony fandom, attracted to it by its positive message and general wholesomeness. Steven Universe likewise inspired many people.

This is the world that Undertale entered, and brought into the world a very wholesome roleplaying game.

There’s one central conceit, upon all the rest of which the edifice is built – Undertale is a turn-based RPG where no one has to die. Every single enemy in the game – from random encounters to boss monsters – can be spared. You don’t have to kill anyone, and indeed, can befriend almost everyone you meet if you work at it hard enough.

The game, then, is a very wholesome thing – it’s a game where you have the choice to be a good person or a terrible, murderous one. And if you choose to be a bad person – if you choose to murder the many goofy monsters that inhabit its world… well, it will be merciless in showing you just what an awful person you are, and how hurt everyone is by what you’re doing.

This is a game which is on its surface very light and cheerful – there’s a large number of goofy characters, and indeed, almost everyone in the game is quite silly when you get down to it. You’ve got Toriel, a goat monster who tells corny jokes. You’ve got Alphys the hapless shut-in otaku scientist who is deeply socially inept but who tries to help you anyway. You’ve got Papyrus the skeleton, who speaks in the titular font and who has no idea how funny he is, and who gives you his phone number to try and help you out, but who mostly instead just makes terrible jokes about the areas you’re in.

But there’s a disturbing undertone to it all. Toriel doesn’t want you to leave, and apparently has left the rest of the monsters for some reason. Alphys is depressed and not only unable to come to grips with her feelings, but has apparently failed in some disastrous way that has led her to shut herself off from the rest of society – and the further you go, the more you learn about just what happened. And Papyrus… okay, he’s just a goof. But the further you go, the more obvious that there is just something OFF about the world you’re exploring.

There’s some real darkness lurking under the surface, with some monsters wanting to steal your powerful soul to use it to break the monsters free and overrun the human world, a talking flower who keeps encouraging you to become a murderer, and the whole fact that you *can* kill everyone in the game… if you’re a terrible person. There’s something fundamentally wrong with the world of Undertale, and yet, the people in it manage to be surprisingly wholesome anyway, with everyone having some core of goodness to them, no matter how far lost they might seem at first glance.

This balance of humor, wholesomeness, and disturbing darkness all works together to create a very compelling package. Combined with a highly novel system where you defend yourself in the turn-based combat by dodging enemy attacks in a sort of shoot-em-up type thing that turns into something bordering on bullet hell by the end of it, and the game feels very fresh, despite being what appears to be on the surface a simple retro 8-bit turn-based RPG.

This is a game that breaks its own rules, which integrates story and gameplay, which makes the player laugh but also makes the player love the characters and want to protect them and keep them from harm. It’s a game that makes the player CARE.

That’s why people love it so much. The gameplay, without everything else, would only be okay. But the way that everything in this game is so tightly tied together – and the way that the game deliberately both helps and misguides the player to put them at risk of hurting the goofy inhabitants of the world – makes Undertale an experience that many people won’t want to miss.

That isn’t to say it is perfect – it has some issues with pacing here and there, especially in the pentultimate portion of the game, where things start to drag with a long series of repetitive puzzles, and in a game as short as this is, the weak portion of the game is all the more prominent.

But by the end of Undertale, I was filled with warm and fuzzy feelings. I felt good about completing this game – indeed, in my whole time playing video games, I think I’ve only felt this good about a game a handful of times. Portal and Portal 2. The Talos Principle. Chrono Trigger. And now this.

And in the end, it’s hard to say that a game that made me feel this good about having played it isn’t amazing.

If all you’re looking for is challenging gameplay, this isn’t the game for you. But if you’re someone who does like being touched by a charming (if offbeat) story and characters, you shouldn’t miss out on this.

It is not like other games where you try to perform an action with an expected result, and are disappointed in the lack of developer foresight, rather this game does the opposite and exceeds expected design and foresight by meeting and beating my expectations every time I raised the bar. Every time I explored the game, I learned something else that was actually relevant and had meaning, rather than small details of little consequence. Everything in the story is so wrapped up in itself and is tied up in such a delicate manner that it seems as if there are absolutely no plot holes in the story at all. Expand

I am not the type who thinks games can ever REALLY reach a ten. This one does. It's pure, delightful magic, with fascinating characters, brilliant writing, and real emotional pull. I won't spoil anything, but I killed someone early on and it was heart-wrenching. I reload the game and it lets me avoid killing that character, but it remembers that I did. The music is glorious. Dispute their simplicity the graphics still convey enough to get you invested in the characters, especially with their endearing personalities and they'll make you laugh and weep in equal measure. The music as well is stellar with some amazing tracks.
For £7, you have no excuse not to play Undertale. At 6 hours long for a typical play through it's not the longest game, but you'll want to come back to the world as many times as you can.

Did they even play games in the NES, SNES era? I honestly cant understand why people keep atributting so much importance to graphics and completely miss other points in the game. The focus clearly wasn't in any of that but mostly in the fighting mehanics and story, not to mention the characters and humor which are all amazing. Heck, I bet most of the people that wrote the really bad reviews haven't even played through the true ending of the game and just decided to give up on it after they completed it for the first time. These people missed the whole fun factor because they were too set on other things that shouldn't have importance in the experience in my opinion. And I gotta say many of the people that read those reviews are probably never gonna give the game a chance which saddens me because it's a really great piece of work. And I gotta remind you this was practically a one man work, sure he was helped by some people but the project was mostly his so you there is no need to be so harsh when reviewing this game.

Anyway this game is completely worth it's price. Like I said in my Steam review I felt I got way more than what I paid for.

You will definitely feel sad if not even tear up at the end of this game. So i definitely reccomend this for everyone.

The only bad thing that I think it's worth pointing out is some of the menu systems but that is just a small point in the game that doesn't break it at all.

Overall if I could I'd give a 9.9/10 here in Metacritic but since that's not possible I'm giving it a 10.

And remember that this game... it will fill you with DETERMINATION!

This is mostly due to the fact that it was built in game maker apparently and that thing is as unstable as spaghetti on a plate so

This is mostly due to the fact that it was built in game maker apparently and that thing is as unstable as spaghetti on a plate so that is one hell of a achievement. Not to mention how the save file can remember even the tiniest of details that happen during your playthrough, even when closing the game without "saving" will still remember it is beyond anything else for sure.

If you're willing to have that patience, then I promise you that the game is worth the cost.

From a first glance, Undertale looks like a mediocre jrpg. Through the first couple of hours, the only things that are reasonably engaging are the promise of drama ahead and witty humor for the time-being. But the game hints at having far more depth than anyone could've originally expected, and the world around the player is beautifully exposed as the plot progresses.

By the end of the game, the player has an entirely new understanding of the world that they worked their way through. They understand that actions have consequences, and that assuming Undertale should be played like other games (and specifically, other jrpgs) is a misconception. Depending on a final decision, the game may prompt the player to try again with a specific goal in mind.

And that's my favorite thing about Undertale. You're meant to try again. And when you go through the game again, while there is some repetition, you'll notice that things are different. There will be new characters, new dialogue, and the surroundings and world around you will be changed because of the different decisions that you've made. And you're not replaying the game, you're continuing with the playthrough that you've already done. The game remembers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying: this game had no right, NO RIGHT, to be as good as it was. It released the same month as several major AAA releases, sold for only $10, and this is what you got. It had no right, it just waltzed right in, barely even noticed among these other AAA giants... and then blew my expectations out of the water. Not to say I had expectations, but what this game gave me was an experience I will never, ever forget as long as I live.

So Undertale is an RPG in the same vein as Earthbound, in fact many parallels can be drawn to the Mother series such as the art style and mood of the setting. But anyway it's an RPG where you play as a child that fell into an underground world populated by monsters who were driven underground many years ago by humans. But not all of these monsters want to kill you, in fact many of them are quite amiable and have their own lovable personalities, but then that's where the main mechanic of the game comes into play: you can either kill or spare these creatures. I never thought I would say this, but there legitimately is a "wrong" way to play this game in my opinion, if you play any way other than full pacifist route then you are cheating yourself out of the greatest video game experience I have ever felt. Going the aptly named "genocide" route, while an option, I feel will rob you of its intended themes: friendship, awful jokes, and how nobody is beyond redemption, no matter what.

Combat revolves around either taking turns attacking "enemies" (if you wish to do the genocide route), while dodging their attacks by a wario-ware esque bullet hell minigame, or interacting with them to defeat them by...other means (for the pacifist route). Truth is the writing in this game is actually funny. Granted people find different things funny but this game got me laughing the whole way through (when it wasn't making me cry my eyes out). And that's the other thing: this game knows when to be funny, it knows when to be creepy, or when to be dramatic and it knows how to do all of those things very well.

The soundtrack, like the game itself, had NO... RIGHT... to be as good as it is. Although they are simple 8 bit tunes for the most part, with some special effects at just the right moments in the game, the soundtrack is just phenomenally well done, and I frequently catch myself humming some of the delightful tunes you will hear throughout the game.

Where do I even start with the story? As mentioned before you can either choose to kill enemies or "spare" them, going through the game without killing a single character grants you access to what I can only describe as the most fulfilling, intense, heartwarming and adrenaline pumping final boss battle I have ever witnessed in a video game to date. And I've pretty much played all of them, trust me on that one. The visuals mixing with the highly emotional and dynamic music along with the heartwarming dialogue really, really impressed me, and opened up entire new avenues for interacting with the player's emotions through the story. I simply cannot stress enough that if you are a gamer, this is something you NEED to experience at least once. The following conclusion is so heartwarming, if you don't at least choke up a bit, then you have a heart of steel... and I envy you!

The retro style graphics might be turn off for many gamers, particularly with the prevalence of half-hearted indie games flooding the market, toting "retro graphics", but although Undertale uses these visuals as well, it does try some interesting effects and after a little while, you tend to forget about how simple the visuals can look at times.

I shouldn't be giving this game a 10/10 because no game is literally perfect in every way, but since I can't give it a 9.9 I'll round it up to 10 because this game deserves it. It deserves every bit of praise it gets, and it deserves to be remembered for years to come, if not for its wonderful story that tugs at all the right heart strings, then for being an undoubtedly pure video game experience, crafted with love and meticulous attention to detail the likes of which only show up once in a very, very long time.

Undertale is a fantastic of video games as art, and I don't mean that in terms of graphics. I mean that in terms of gameplay, the story line, and the characters. The game's characters are likable and have a lot of personality too them, The game also has multiple endings one titled "The True Pacifist Ending" is earned by becoming friends with certain characters, and not killing anyone. I got "The True Pacifist Ending" and was heart broken when the game came to an end, and the fact that here is only one save makes it difficult to start a new game because the characters are so likable, but Know this I will be returning too Undertale. Undertale is less a game and more an experience that makes you question not only your actions on a moral level but the very foundations of how video games can tell a story. It completely shatters common barriers between the the in game story and the out of story elements of the game, even turning your game saves into vital plot points.

I don't often give games a straight 10/10 score because normally it denotes an uncritical fanboyish response to a game, but undertale is truely something special, the mere fact that someone could create such a subversive, beautiful and utterly engaging story almost single handedly from a $50k kickstarter is mind boggling and makes this game utterly deserving of such a high score.

Undertale takes everything wrong with traditional JRPGs (bloating, grinding, mind numbing combat that relies heavily on pressing the same button over and over until special enemies or bosses come around) and turns them on their heads. The game is relatively short, but in this short amount of time, every character is fleshed out making every little decision you make that much more important.

Right from the start the game plays with your expectations, it's opening leads you in and lets you make what mistakes you will before you really get a grasp on how much your actions effect the game. Beware, however. Even having second thoughts and trying to fix your mistakes can be picked up in ways you don't expect.

The gameplay is fun regardless of whether or not you are talking or fighting your way through an encounter, though honestly most of that enjoyment comes from defending yourself. The bullet hell cut ins and the way they defy expectation creates a system that's extremely varied and extremely fun. Just when you get used to the classic bullet hell combat, with a few small twists already thrown in, the entire mechanic of it changes for specific fights. Maybe now you can shoot, or it becomes sort of like a rythm game, or you have to platform.

The grander story and the emotion of the game is it's real selling point. From the way it encourages you to stay determined when you die, to the way the ending brought me to tears, or how the "bad ending" rips at your heart in a way no other game ever could, it's all amazingly crafted. The joke "Toby thinks of everything" proves true more often then you expect and every playthrough you'll discover something new. Maybe a locked door you gave up on opening and entirely forgot about you'll stumble back upon!

Brilliant game, ten out of ten

What words can I use to sum up the emotional experience that Undertale is...?

Well Undertale is an indie RPG inspired by classics such as Earthbound and Chrono Trigger but is distinct enough to stand on it's own as a classic in it's own right. On the surface, Undertale looks like a traditional JRPG, but digging deeper you find a very melancholic but positive outlook on real life itself, the friends you meet on your journey, and being able to stay determined even when things start to look grim...at least that's what I got out of it, to me that's Undertale's greatest strength. Besides a really meaningful message, the game has a great story, memorable characters, hilarious sense of humor, and an amazing soundtrack.

The story is about a boy, nameless protagonist *insert name here*, who falls from the human world into a land that's filled with monsters, and as the nameless protagonist *insert name here*, you must journey through this land and eventually find your way back to the human world. Of course you encounter enemies, bosses, memorable characters, skeletons that make hilariously bad puns, and dogs along the way that it's hard not to get engrossed in this world and actually start caring about the people you meet along the way.

While I highly recommend sticking with the Pacifist run and experiencing the amazing Pacifist True Ending, there's also a Genocide run you can do which basically means instead of negotiating and sparing everyone you come in contact with, you play it in a more traditional way and massacre everyone you meet. I have yet to do this and I'm not sure if I could do this. I've grown to love the characters so much I couldn't even think about doing the Genocide run... this game is really good at making you care about the in-game characters.

The battle system is very unique, encouraging you to not kill enemies but instead trying to negotiate your way to sparing your enemy. The enemies themselves have a very fun and unique way of attacking, spraying bullet-hell type attacks in a way that almost feels like Wario Ware's micro games. Through the battle system you learn about the enemies, and come to understand them.

The characters themselves are very memorable, my favorites being the bone headed brothers, Sans and Papyrus, who are literally skeletons. Characters you meet and befriend are mostly bosses who want to kill you but with your determination, eventually they give up and instead help and encourage you along your journey to get back to the surface and return to the human world.

The soundtrack as a whole is amazing, sporting many catchy songs, atmospheric melodies, and many mood setting pieces. There's a really good song that to me sums up the game's atmosphere perfectly. "Memory" does a great job at setting the melancholic but positive tone of the game.

Some moments in this game are really psychological, messing with player interaction as well as breaking the fourth wall to a degree that not even Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid could manage. This game does a great job of just playing with your mind even if you don't even realize it's playing with your mind.

It's hard to explain in detail what makes this game so good. In short I'd say experience it for yourself, try the demo if my review hasn't piqued your interest. But seriously do yourself a favor and play this game, it's only $10 and what you get in this game is more than what most Triple 'A' developers offer for $60 games these days.

I can safetly say this game is highly recommended and give it a definite 10/10, I'd definitely play this game again.

Because in reality, this game is a true reminder of what gaming, at its core, is supposed to be: Fun.

Undertale might be one of the most unique games I've ever played. It is a perfect example of how games don't need to look shiny or be complex to be enjoyable.
Everything about this game is just so fresh. The soundtracks are amazing; the humor, which is a big part of the game, is spot on; the characters are so loving and interesting; and emotions run high.

The concept of not having to kill anyone is a very nice thing, and all the enemies are unique and have different "standards".
For such a "small" game, it has a lot of lore and backstory. There's no surprise that this game has been getting so much love.

For people willing to give different kinds of games a chance, I highly recommend Undertale.

I have never and will never again play a game that brought me such joy and gripped me in the way Undertale did. It is truly a unique masterpiece, and cannot be replicated. This indie game managed to be my favorite game of 2015, beating every big budget game because of it's charm and the DETERMINATION of Toby Fox.

I'm honestly against a lot of indie games nowadays. Mostly because they're all the same thing. 8 or 16-bit graphics, and some sort of RPG where you're stuck somewhere. But god damn is Undertale isn't one of the best games I've ever played in my life.

This game possesses more creativity than any AAA title out there, whether in dialogue, story, game play or even detail. A living testament the quality of the game is in its substance, and not in the graphics. A clear case of game of the year, and a breath of fresh air: actual effort and heart placed in a game.

A friendly advice. go play the game blind. Don't spoil yourself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Undertale is a very good game in so many ways. First of all, the game is a satire to all the Rpg's out there. How? This game puts you into a more "real" world. If you play any Rpg, you would mostly encounter the "bad guy" with all his evil intentions and nothing but cold blood running through his veins and only destruction/power/etc. as his objective. But as you play
Undertale, you realize that this game is VERY different. In Undertale you are indeed fighting against "enemies", but if you pay attention, a bit of attention only, you'll realize that your "enemies" are actually good and they have pretty good motives to what they're doing. For example, Asgore, the so portrayed "Final Boss". When you face him, you get to know his story and the reason of why he is trying to kill you. Which are overall good reasons, I mean freedom for your race is a good reason in my opinion. Of course this argument leaves Flowie out, that **** is devil himself(and if you ask why I say him and not her, is because Flowie is in reality Asriel Dreemurr).
Another reason why this game is so good, is how even though has only 2 voices in the whole game(excluding abc_123_a), the feelings it gets to transmit, and how well the characters express themselves is stunningly beautiful. The first time I played, I murdered Undyne, I regreted in the instant she started giving her final monologue as she was slowly dying, how she slowly attacked me, just made me want to go back and prevent it (the same with Toriel).
In a game that looks like Undertale, I was waiting a gameplay similar to FF, Pokemon, or something similar. But as I advanced into the game, the way in which each character has his own way of attacking and how YOU evade the incoming attacks, is just revolutionary. I mean, Undertale is a game where you can win the whole game without actually losing a single hp point(that takes some skill). A game where you interact directly in how you attack(or don't), on how you survive, and it takes ONLY skill to do so, brings such a new way of playing that is so satisfying to the player.
And last but not least, the way it brakes the 4th wall, is amazing. If you play Undertale more than once, and replay it differently to the way you did the 1st time, it won't take long to see that the texts and the game do not "speak" in the perspective of the character, but rather in the perspective of the player. Seeing things such as "I've already seen her die" or how flowy/chara/sans talk to you and tell you about how you reset the game, just brakes the forth barrier in such a way that I've never seen before. And don't get me in how Toby Fox placed the abc_123_a for all the "easter egg seekers" out there.
I hope I've given good reasons to play Undertale, or rather, why I liked so much this game. Greetings and goodbye, hope this review fills you with DETERMINATION

Its a nice departure from the tried and true formula of those games and still being able to very much tug at your heartstrings.

Is it any of those older games? No. But it doesn't really try to be. It's pretty easy to play, its fun, and thats really it. What more could you want for something like $10?

My game of the year for 2015. This is a fantastic example of a literally excellent independent video game, one that is filled with soul, dedication and effort. To play Undertale is a necessity for RPG fans and those that are not. I could go on for hours about why Undertale is such a great game, but to know why, you need to play it yourself, not knowing what to expect in any way.

There are few things that can leave an impression on the human heart quite as much as a well told story. Don't be put off by the community, because it is, in many ways, no different than the fandom for something like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. UnderTale is nothing short of one of the greatest games ever made. And no, this is not a bandwagon opinion. Few things have been able to touch so many hearts, so many -- for lack of a better word -- souls, as this game has. You, yes you, the person reading this review -- not your neighbor, not your friend -- YOU would be doing yourself a disservice by not first doing a playthrough of this game and then a followup investigation into what certain things really meant (Preferably while listening to the countless hours of fan created and original soundtrack that is quite possibly the best OST in the entire history of games). Every single frame, every little animation, every sound byte and every bit of conversation that happens in this game happens for a reason and putting the pieces of that together is half the fun of the 13 hour long game that I played one time three years ago...

That I still obsess over and love with all my heart and soul to this very day.

I would have paid a thousand dollars for the experience I got from this -- and I only played it once. In fifty years, I hope this game is still talked about as a pinnacle of storytelling in games. Thank you for reading.

I wish more RPGs were like this. Makes you really think before killing monsters. Makes you feel for 2D sprites. Constantly holds your attention and occasionally surprises/betrays your emotions with twists. This game is quirky and starts off a bit slow, but once you fall down the Undertale hole, theres no coming back to the surface.

I cannot think of a single thing that bothered me during the time I played this game, It is more a work of art than a game. I simply don't understand why people can be so negative towards this game. I mean, the graphics aren't the best, not by a long shot, but they don't need to be to convey what the game is trying to convey. The soundtrack is good. Damn good. Like, "I'd stick this OST on an iPod and listen to it everyday" good.

The gameplay is fun enough. The difference between this game and standard RPGs is that, to avoid attacks, you must endure a small bullet-hell sequence rather than simply having high stats and praying to RNGsus. I like this difference as it means you have to actually get good at the game rather than simply grinding for better stats.

The story is enjoyable, without giving too much away. It also somehow manages to really shift one's view of the game at points if played blindly, and oftentimes makes players wonder "what if I did things differently?". The developer had a lot of foresight and seemed to know how players would think and work in certain scenarios, so props to him for that.

Overall, it's a good experience, easily one of the best games of 2015, and a game that I can wholeheartedly recommend to basically anyone.

I had very high expectations for Undertale when I first went into it, which is worrisome, because this usually results in disappointment. The story is great. Some of the side activities or side quests if you can call it that is fantastic.
This is a pretty solid rpg. With replay value. And i wont be surprised that i will replay this one more time down the line.
Also the graphic , what to say it has it charm , it works in this 2d rpg. Last thing is to say is try not to watch anything on youtube before you play this. Go in scratch with no barely no info about the game is best and you will actually go in and visit a wonderful created game.
So my rating well i cant help it but is a 10 , i dont find any real flaw in it , and compared to alot of other games is actually not that easy is quite hard, not dark souls hard or anything but, hard enough, it has replay value. While i don`t really agree with gamefaq that is the best game ever ,is was population contest tough , because i am one of the few who think there probably wont be a best game ever. Anyway it among my favourite games and i cant say this enough this games has tons of charm, humor and did i mention the atmosphere is fantastic.
    Thanks for reading.

PS:MINOR SPOILER REGARDING THE ENDING i almost wished i didn't complete it today on my b-day as the ending surprised me and i taught the game glitch over and over, not funny when i thought i had to do the last boss again, but still when i think about it wasn't that bad, it worked pretty well and was actually a little fun when you realise the game is just joking with you .

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
