Town of Zoz swings big with its mix of combat, cooking, and community, and while not all of its ideas come together smoothly, there’s a lot to admire in its ambition and personality. It’s a slightly rough but endearing adventure that feels as much about reconnecting with culture as it does saving the day.

Town of Zoz’s combat feels a bit jumbled, but the presentation, general gameplay, and music are excellent and make for a pretty unique title. If you don’t see potentially bumpy combat as a dealbreaker, I think there’s a lot to really dig about this game, as it juggles a number of concepts in a distinct and mostly enjoyable way.

The game is an ambitious debut that wins you over with its personality and cultural depth rather than its mechanical polish. It’s a mostly positive romp that feels like a rough diamond. The Bottom Line: If you enjoy vibe-heavy games like Cuisineer or Hades (but with a much slower, cozy pace), you’ll likely love the atmosphere of Town of Zoz. However, if you have low tolerance for technical jank or slow-starting tutorials, you might want to wait for the first major patch. Town of Zoz needs a little bit of polish to address some crashes, combat system and UI clunkiness. But the core story of community and healing through food is something special.

Studio Pixanoh has created a game oozing with potential, weaving cookery and combat with a whole lot of anime. But, like a well-served dish, it’s all about finding the right balance of ingredients and Town of Zoz feels just a touch off-balance.
