Clever class design accepted, Torchlight III doesn’t offer tremendous innovation or nuance in its systems or gameplay. The gratuitous destruction is often great fun, right up until the hour marker when it’s not, and it all starts to feel a bit tedious. Thankfully, there’s always a new magic sword to collect, a respec to try out, a new character class to discover, or a dungeon to delve. Torchlight III is an approachable action/RPG that’s especially welcoming to newcomers, or simply players who don’t want to focus too hard on their evening’s entertainment. Repeat conquerors of heaven and hell may wish to look elsewhere, but if your desires for fantasy destruction are more about high-octane action, Torchlight III rarely disappoints.

Torchlight III is a great entry in the series as it doesn’t explicitly try to be exactly like its predecessors. Instead, it attempts to do new things using classes and relics to personalize the adventure along with a few accessible leveling systems and skill trees. It all works for the most part, but it’s a design that doesn’t allow for the deepest amount of customization. Sure, building a fort and collecting loot with my friends is fun, but there has to be some balance and short term goals that make each level up and new area discovered worth it.

I certainly enjoyed my time with Torchlight 3 and will continue to jump back in if my friends are online, but the game has its faults. I disagree with the common sentiment in online communities that Torchlight 3 feels like it should have been an expansion to Torchlight 2; the new classes and Relic system are an excellent addition to the series and provide a level of replayability and customisation that the previous games didn’t have. Yet with that being said, I’m not convinced that the extended campaign, fort system and new class customisation options are enough to warrant the hefty price tag when compared to the offerings in the previous games. Not to mention the bizarre lack of online public matchmaking, which was a vital component of the previous game. If you’ve enjoyed the previous Torchlight games, you’ll undoubtedly enjoy Torchlight 3 as well, but you might want to wait until it’s on sale.

Although fans did dodge quite a bullet with Frontiers, Torchlight 3 isn’t the sequel TL2 deserves: it’s really just an okay action RPG filled with cute pets and a base of operations gimmick that adds little compared with the enormous amount of stuff that’s lacking at launch. Dungeons will need a big update, combat could be more intense, and the world map is just too damn linear to enjoy.

Torchlight III still suffers from many issues that have been present since its Early Access stage, including a middling endgame and bland core gameplay loop. Worse, its restrictions on character builds and relic usage lead to a lack of experimentation and customization.

Torchlight 3 is a lighthearted, simple co-op ARPG that might provide some fun to casual ARPG players or serious fans of the series, but doesn't do much else to justify its existence.

Torchlight III, while clearly wearing the franchise's skin like a badge of honor, never hits the marks of the previous entries. This is a very basic ARPG that frequently shows its free-to-play roots, and in a market overflowing with action-packed role-playing games, being a mediocre sequel isn't going to win you any favors -- especially from hardcore fans.

The story is fair and could have used of more of those 2d stills, then those audio treasures. The interface isn't that easy. I played with a controller on PC and there were some instances where I had to use the mouse.

The combat is somewhat unbalanced. Your, shoot a projectile, is very strong and can beat all the game while swinging a sword/mace is extremely weak. Some magic powers are completely useless while some others extremely strong. So, I mounted only 4-5 of them to max, with 3 passive. All the other powers didn't help me.

And they were a lot of glitches with the pets. From one zone to another, the pet would vanish. I had to go back, choose another one, and take back mine. Again some pets doesn't do much. I ended using only one. And there was the matter of fleeing pets. Some are specialized in that. I also had invisible sections of levels around the end. The music and voice overs were really good.

I give it 65% because I loved the first two game. I was fairly entertained but all the small glitches and nick-knacks, ruined the experience for me. And what was the point of building a fort ? I felt like they lost their time on that aspect of the game, that seem more like a gimmick thing.

While I really enjoyed TL2, the third entry feels like a step backwards.

The graphics don't seem to have improved. If anything, they are worse. TL2 gave me Fortnite and free-to-play vibes, which TL3 only emphasises, missing an opportunity to carve a more original and unique look. Character customisation is really lacking when creating a new character, while the varieties of armour are nice but predictable at this point.

The gameplay of TL3 makes some very strange changes, removing a skill tree format that suits ARPGs really well. The concept of the contracts also felt very free-to-play. This is quite disappointing as my mage character was quite bland rather than a specialist in the elements or summoning etc.

Having a fort to build and customise is a nice touch, but mostly useless and irrelevant other than boosting my luck and stashing gear.

Even on lower difficulties enemies appear to be bullet-sponges, making some of the boss fights a test of endurance rather than skill.

The story of TL3 feels borderline non-existent and incoherent. TL2 had me pursuing an alchemist, which was vague but at least tangible, whilst TL3 seemed to just keep telling me to proceed to the next linear goal.

TL2 was a breath of fresh air from the stale Diablo formula, but TL3 represents the tiredness of the genre and the cynicism in modern games slipping into live-services, so I won't be surprised if TL next takes the step into a full-blown mobile game the way they attempted to do with Diablo. Avoid.

An ARPGIn 2020 many are looking for a pleasant distraction to get them through the onslaught of meme-worthy events that seem to have no end. An ARPG is a perfect fit and Torchlight III appeared at a great time. Unfortunately, this is a poorly slapped together, incomplete game that still suffers from many issues that were present back in June 2020 when this game hit early access.

Despite continued patching efforts over the last 4 months, lag and disconnects are still present during multiplayer. Skills that once worked are now broken due to patching. Basic things like damage over time do not work correctly in some cases.

Then there is the endgame loop, which comes in the flavors of Contracts, Forts, and Frazeer’s Dun’Djinn. This sounds like a lot, however, Contracts simply level up and unlock various rewards by playing the game like normal. There isn’t anything you’re actively doing. The passive event that it is makes it bland even when getting a great reward you’ve been looking forward to. I thoroughly enjoy building and designing in-game and Forts would seem like the perfect distraction that would elevate this game, but sadly, it doesn’t. Like many aspects of Torchlight III, it feels like an afterthought or more like a remnant of an idea that was left in because is was “neat”.

The Dun’Djinn is a 251-floor challenge dungeon that is essentially Mapworks from previous games but with a twist. You can pick modifiers that can make the level you’re about to enter more difficult. The levels and bosses are from the campaign and the loot drop chance is tuned (currently) lower than in the campaign, which is simply poor design. On top of that, there is literally no reward system for completing any part of Dun’Djinn, and for me, simply having bragging rights is not enough.

I joined Early Access on day 1 and joined the Discord community immediately. It was refreshing to see the devs working so hard on the game and seemingly listening to what the community was saying. The devs did make some good changes, but as I said earlier, every patch would break things that were working and since it was early access, that was largely OK. But then they rushed to release, ham fisting a broken game into 1.0 status without the stability you’d expect from a game with the name Torchlight. Single-player has suffered from losing characters and character progress.

The devs are largely absent now only to occasionally pop in to say “something great is coming” but I just don’t believe them anymore. I had hope for this game, and it may turn out good as time goes on. Right now, this is still playing like an early access game that is broken and lacks the endgame loop that is needed to keep an ARPG floating.

I usually don't get hard on games, but torchlight is one of my most revered and loved franchises. When I heard torch light was going free to play I knew it was going to be a dumpster fire.

This game has zero depth. The characters are goofy. They are so goofy I as a player cannot bond with them. Their movement just hurts to look at. The skills just seem lacking as well. It feels like a cheap rip off of torch light 2. I have got to act 2 during early access. The biomes are lacking in diversity. How did this game go so wrong? I don't want to attack the dev team personally, but this game is a pile of garbage. I wish I could get my money back. I have survived arpgs like Wulcen, Epoch and many others.
