I really like the story and absolutely love the music. The graphics is a bit lacking, the game runs in a really low resolution, but this game isn't about gameplay or beautiful graphics. Playing this game feels a little like reading a story book with pictures and a little bit of interaction.

If there was a Nobel prize for gaming perfection, this would be the winner. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good story. Don't be discouraged by the 2D graphics or whatever else because this game will surprise in you and keep you glued to the screen up to the very end!
This games deserves a 50 out of 10!

If you want a game with a awesome story and really good music you should buy this but if you want more action, you should choose another game!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In To The Moon you are very much the vessel for a wonderful storyline that may border line on cliché in parts but with the soundtrack setting the backdrop on rather simple yet elegant graphics, I couldn't care less. The story really delivers this powerful story perfectly in my opinion and as a whole it may be one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played purely based on the way it made me feel throughout the entire storyline. If I am looking for more action based games or with more to do this is not a game to play, but if you want a great story above all else this is the game for you. The game delivers many moments of sheer brilliance, my favourite of which may be one that doesn't strike much for many in when Jonny plays his wife the song "For River"... I can't help but give this game the full 10/10 as for me its one of the greatest games I've ever played. Expand

I expected something different from this game. Before I bought it I've read that it had a pretty good story. But after playing it I must say, it's really a masterpiece. Deeply emotional, artwork and soundtrack fit perfectly. Not really a classic computergame, more like an interactive visually presented story. Was definitely worth buying.

The work is a VN in an RPG, but irregardless it is art, it is one of the media forms that transcend simply a "game" and in our future it is among those that I want our time to be judged by.

I loved the premise. Now comes the cool part: you have to analyze Johnny's memories, understand them, and make the necessary changes. But the process is done backwards. You begin by analyzing what is most recent, because it is easier to access in his mind; going towards the one that is deeper, with everything divided into layers.

Many times we are perplexed with Johnny's certain attitudes and choices, where each layer we enter into brings new mysteries around his relationship with his dead wife, River, who also has mysterious and intriguing attitudes (which also has a good, explanation) and also around his own personality.

It is a game full of adventure, tragedy, mystery and an ideal dose of humor with comic references to games, movies and anime, like Street Fighter, Matrix and Dragon Ball Z; beyond the relationship full of sarcasm, and friendship, between Rosalene and Neil. A game that makes us reflect about life, the problems that we go through, how they affect us and what we can do to adapt and overcome them. Seriously, it's so well built, that a trivial thing dictates in the first 5 minutes of play, will connect with something at the end and blow your mind! A semiotic analysis of this game would be a full plate for an academic.

I'm here reflecting on the experience that this game has given me and the mix of emotions he made me feel, with charismatic characters and their attractive story (which is their strongest point). I may not have wept with the game, which I hardly do; but my heart was tight! I think that have playing from the start to finish with my girlfriend must have been a factor that made the experience even better, as we discussed theories about what was happening (and she did cry with the game). And it's a short game, we finish it in just under 5 hours. But even so, the experience was surreal! Do not connect the number of hours played into the fun, connect to the experience that the game provides you! Let's remember another short game that brings a fantastic experience? JOURNEY! And it is worth mentioning that "To The Moon", game made in RPG MAKER, has 81 points in Metascore! More points than too much "Triple A" what we have around.

And one more thing: the story and script of this game would turn into a movie, or a miniseries, easily. With the right to be called masterpiece, if it is well produced, after all we have examples of the film industry **** over game franchises and books that were almost ready to make sucess on the movie theater.

To conclude, I can only say two things: play that game and be happy with this experience that goes beyond expectations.

It's a pretty unassuming game, and there are lots of indications throughout the game that this was made by a very small studio - the sprites are all pretty cliche, the environments are pretty standard, and the movement is often janky. But despite all of that, few games have ever touched me in the way that this game did. The story is truly out of this world (no pun intended).

For me, that moment was when you do finally find out why the old man, Johnny, wanted to go to the moon to begin with. One of the most ambitious stories in gaming. In fact, if this was a film I can imagine it being "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" kind of great. Yes, it looks like a snes game. Yes the gameplay is poor at best. And yes, I give this a 10/10 purely on it's ambition. Which consumes and overwhelms everything around it. Negatives be damned, this is a masterwork. A private, intimate, masterwork.

To the moon is a sort of game which makes you howl with laughter one moment while making you weep the next. It uses every single pixel on screen to mesmerize you and astonish you as to how much emotion can be portrayed using a 16 bit look. The story takes the supreme precedence in this adventure/RPG game (though there is almost no RPG elements- apart from a very humorous jab at jRPG early in the game). The creator uses the game mostly to paint a wonderful story surrounding love, adventure, life and death. Some might not like it since gameplay takes the back seat, but I assure you that this is the kind of game which makes most of the movies and tv shows look petty. While the gameplay elements are pretty straightforward for anyone to pickup quickly, there are some small challenges along the way concerning the number of moves to complete intermittent puzzles.
The game does falter a little bit towards the end, making use of tedious chasing sequences at one point but that is small enough to be forgiven.
All in all this is a game which raises indie gaming to a whole different level in terms of its storytelling and the thoughtfulness of its premise- I might say as good as Braid and Limbo.
Do yourself a favor and play this game.

My expectations weren't overly high, since many other popular RPG maker games that are deemed to be classics ended up disappointing me. But not this game. You get to journey through a man's life by visiting his memories and seeing which people and events have had an impact on him. The game starts off slowly, but the pace picks up after the first half hour and it just kept me wanting to know more.

Some parts did feel a bit unfocused or dragged too much, and also many of the male scientist's remarks were rather out of place in a game like this and broke immersion. I also wasn't a fan of a strange corridor mini-game with booby traps later on (yes, I am not joking). I personally thought that scene didn't need to exist at all because it didn't fit with the serious nature of the game's story. But other than that, I found the story to be emotional and very touching. The puzzles were all very simple and fun. You never get stuck too long trying to solve any of them.

I also thought the music was fantastic. It really helped to enhance the emotions in each scene.

Overall, I would recommend this game if you're after an emotional story that will pull on your heartstrings. It might not be for everyone, but it's certainly worth checking out. If you're after a more gameplay-heavy game though, you probably wouldn't like it.

Great writing, great story, great music. At times it's a little bit unclear what you're supposed to be doing, and this leads to more trial-and-error item hunting than I would like, but it's a relatively minor complaint about an otherwise beautiful game.

This game is as close to perfect as you could ever get. The graphics may be old style, but they didn't need them to tell a phenomenal story. This game had me crying from both joy, laughter and sadness. No game, book or movie has ever done that to me before. Easily my favorite game of all time.

Eva and Neil make a very interesting pair, being extremely funny when they can be and serious when they need to be. It's unbelievable that in this day and age of high-tech graphics, To The Moon can convey so much feeling through so few pixels. It plays like a point-and-click game and can be controlled completely with the mouse, but this is not recommended. This came clearly has a very simple gameplay. You just search for objects, click on them, solve a picture with moving tiles and move on. So it's more like an interactive movie. The funny thing is that this was something that was absolutely ok for me and the reason is the storytelling.

This came has such a beautiful, well told story. It is very interesting to follow the clues, think about motives and than realize what's behind all this. It's also quite moving. The music is good and fits into the game perfectly. I also think that one of the advantages of this game is the play time of about 5 hours. I don't need games which I can play for 50 hours. I need games which trigger emotions and where i can follow the story easily and do not listen to lots of dialogue which is not important after all.

The game is getting a little bit of track in the end and there are some "action sequences" which were not necessary, but in the end it was worth playing and worth the money. I still think a lot about some of the situations and actions of the main character and his wife. After all this game is a full recommendation for grown up gamers who just want to experience a great story. A story which would be perfect for a movie. Play it.

You take on the role of two doctors, with clashing personalities, that are hired to make his final wish come true: to go to the moon. And this is accomplished by interacting with his memories. Along the way to learn more about their client and some of those close to him.

The story is a mix of joy, sorrow, humor, and everything else you would expect from a good story. If you enjoy a good story, you will probably have a hard time getting away from the game. However, the story is pretty short so you won't have to spend days playing. The play-through can be accomplished within an afternoon. This is the only reason I am giving it a 9 instead of a 10. The music is amazing, and compliments the story very well. I am actually considering purchasing the soundtrack soon.

Again, if you are interested in something different, then "To The Moon" may be worth a purchase. Just make sure you play without anyone around unless you aren't worried about showing some tears around others.

So the duo jump into Wyles' memories to search for the reason why he wants to go to the moon and presenting a deeply emotional & incredibly well told love story.
To The Moon delves into some very dark themes and isn't afraid to make you feel a little uncomfortable at times, however the game is littered with uplifting humour & happy moments that will make even the most cold hearted smile.
It is a point & click game of sorts, collecting items to use on others and the such, but it is a very story driven experience and puzzles are never too complex.
In all To The Moon takes around 4 hours to complete with little replay value beyond experiencing the excellent story again.
The game's biggest problems are its comedic timing, which is very jarring when it makes jokes in some very sad moments of the game and that you can occasionally have a little lack of direction as there are no indicators of what to do and where to go, though these times are few and far between due to it being a very linear experience.
To the Moon is a game that everyone, young and old should experience.

The music is really suiting to the mood, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sometimes both. Where most movies are 2 hours long and 20 dollars, this one is roughly 4.5 hours at almost half the price (it's $9.99 on GoG.com, $12 from the developer's website). If you're expecting gameplay from this, don't. The gameplay is as follows: Walk around, find mementos (you'll figure out what this is when you play the game), solve a puzzle, repeat. But the cutscenes more than make up for this, because that's where all the story is. There is no voice acting, but in my opinion there shouldn't be. There isn't any driver-busting graphics, but there doesn't need to be. In my opinion, the story is better than most movies I've seen recently, because that's what the game is about. Some people may complain about its lack of length, but I'm not, because if it was any longer, it would just feel dragged out and completely lose its effect. Some issues I have with it, though, are that some jokes it makes can completely ruin the mood, but for me, those moments were few and far between.

Before this game, the only game or movie that made me cry was Marley and Me. This game actually made me tear up in some parts, which I think is an amazing feat. Don't expect to come away from this dry-eyed, because if you do, I'm afraid there may be something wrong with you. Also, you will need to have a reading ability to play this game, because all the speech is through text.

In my opinion, this game broke the ground, in the same way that Shadow of the Colossus did. We need more games like this, more games that aren't just "shoot A, move to B," etc. I eagerly look forward to more content from Freebird Games, and while I think this type of game could be really hit or miss, I think for the most part, this is indefinitely a hit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just played To the Moon, and wanted to do a kind of small review thingy because some things have been bugging me. I felt like it was a well written and thought out game, but not executed to the best it could have been. I'll try my best to try and not go "5th grade report essay" on this. If you haven't played the game; buy it, play it, and then read it because there are spoilers that would ruin the game. First the good. One of the best things in the game were the two big music scores, "For River" and "Everything's Alright." They're both still stuck in my head, and it added a lot for the game. "Everything's Alright" alone made chills run down my spine and tears nearly flow. The dynamic music for the rest of the game also gave it more emotion during the story. Another thing was the incredible story. Definitely in the top 5 stories for games i have ever played in terms of how emotionally compelling it was. It was refreshing to play a game that was focused so much on story after playing so many games in the past few years that go for cheap thrills and neglect the story. The story also didn't treat the player/reader as stupid. I think they never mentioned that River had asperger syndrome, but if you knew what it is they made it clear as day. They never directly said many things, but left clues for the player to put together, which is a great way to tell a story. The last big thing for me were the characters in the story. Their actions and emotions felt realistic, not "you stole my wife, I'm going to kill 5,000 guys even though i am unsure of her death" kind of thing. It's because they were so realistic that they were easy to relate with. On the other side of that coin, though, there was one character that is %75 responsible for the reason that this game isn't perfect. I hope i'm not the only one who thinks Dr. Watts should go eat a bag of dicks. I know he was put there as a sort of comic relief, but his small, unfunny (to, me anyway) jokes didn't lighten me up, it just ruined the fantastic mood the rest of the game worked so hard to set. Another thing that ruined the mood was that the story going for a somber, more mature tone while the dialogue of the 2 employees went for a more childish, light tone (for the most part.) The conflict of interest in the way the story was told bothered and confused me as to how i should feel during some parts of the game. Three tiny "plot holes" that i'm sure was just a result of me not listening closely enough was why you had to shoot the barrier of the memento off, why John wanted to use River for his gain, and why the name Anya was so important that they used it to name the lighthouse (i'm probably wrong, but i vaguely remember them saying that the name Anya "made sense.") But I really didn't mind these too much since the rest of the story was flawless. There's also a little bit of unengaging gameplay around the 2nd act, but it's there to build the story, so i can forgive it. Despite all the cons the game has, You would have to try really hard to not like this game. although there were things to keep me from sobbing at the end (which, believe me, i really wanted to do,) the ending was still inches from getting a tear from me. Even before the ending, when they were sitting on the log and saying they wanted to meet on "the rabbits tummy" if they ever got lost made me realize his intentions and made me a little emotional. It's really a fantastic game and should be played if you have the chance.

    in short

I cried so hard. I was crying because of the beauty of the message and the happiness of the finale, but also the emanating sadness of the whole story. When you go to the moon you will feel joy, sorrow, and compassion. Expand

It takes a lot of courage to create a game that has a primary focus on story. It takes even more courage to limit your gameplay because of that same focus. To the Moon apparently has a lot of courage. Is the story of To the Moon strong enough it to stand on its own? Short answer, yes. Yes it is.

Now, let me get something out of the way. No, this game does not have revolutionary graphics. No, this game lacks gameplay mechanics of a traditional adventure RPG. There is no combat. There is no leveling up. To the Moon is not that kind of game. I wouldn't even call it a game, really. To the Moon is an interactive story. And it was intended to be. And yet I can't explain the story without ruining it. This is an experience that cannot be told. If you want to understand why this story is worth telling, you're going to have to pay your money and watch it unfold with your own eyes. The soundtrack to this game is also extremely emotional and is one of the more memorable scores. Piano segments seriously brought me to tears at some points in time, simply because of the pure emotion behind every keystroke. Every song matched the mood it was trying to portray. I have never really been moved by a soundtrack quite like this one. Now, unfortunately, there are some flaws that keep this game from being perfect. Some parts of the game have pointless comedic one-liners from Dr. Neil Watts, who can ruin a mood in an instant. He makes a wisecrack in almost every scene. Mind you, there are some times when his interactions are actually needed and enjoyed. But the number of bad interactions outweigh the good. However, I must say that his personality straightens out in the final half of the game, so he's not all bad. Also, the puzzles in the game seem to be quite out of place. I don't think the game was extremely hindered by them, but at the same time they shouldn't have really been there. All in all, To the Moon is not a game. It's a story. It's an experience. And what an experience it is. There are a couple hiccups down the road, but the sheer amount of emotion put into this game's story and music completely makes up for the flaws of the game. There are few original games out there nowadays, and I'm ecstatic to say that To the Moon is an experience worth enjoying. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll most definitely fall in love with this game just as I have.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a bit late to the party, but I just recently 'beat' the game and thought it was great overall. I do have some (hopefully) constructive criticism to share in hopes to make it, or the next episode, an even better game:

    • The music was, imo, stellar and was the driving force of the game. I can't even listen to any of the songs without getting all misty eyed and I'm not ashamed to say it. ^_^ So please keep that the main focus!

    • The humor was a welcome surprise and really helped give contrast to the game so you weren't just constantly having your heart strings pulled to exhaustion. Please consider that balance for the next episode but I encourage the developer to include more 'mainstream' references for the non-gamers who will inevitably play your game.

    • The pacing of the story and revealing of key plot points was done rather successfully, but I had hoped there was some additional information for those who seek it. Not story line essential info but 'extracurricular' information for the ones who were curious about various details. Maybe further flesh-out characters with optional details that are not important to the story line as long as it didn't risk muddling the flow of the main story.

    • The ending wasn't obvious (thank you) and was one of the most bitter-sweet I've experienced. But I admit that the 'action sequence' near the end (with the zombies) felt out of place when juxtaposed with the rest of the game. I guess you could say it felt a bit rushed, I felt that too much was happening 'behind the scenes' to get to the ending and should have had a bit more player interaction (with the story line itself, not zombies).

    • The game was categorized as a 'Role-playing game', which I realize nearly every game you 'play' a 'role' in the 'game', but most gamers were expecting a bit of what was joked at (final fantasy style battles). To The Moon was more of an interactive story that, frankly, I'd love to see be made into a feature-length movie to both expose more people to this wonderful story but also raise awareness about autism and other personality effecting disorders.

    • The game-play was perhaps it's 'weakest link'. I understand there's only so much that can be done but I did find myself a bit frustrated in a couple points of the game. Finding some of the clues/memory-links felt a bit tedious, maybe adding a visual cue (a glow or sparkle) would help, or incorporate it into the story by adding an in-game 'scan' option that the main characters have access to (while they're in someone's thoughts) that the player can choose to use if they want to.

    • The 'flip puzzles' were both difficult and easy. Some were painfully obvious, others I just got lucky. An effort was made to point out the "ideal" number of moves but the puzzles lacked some sort of reset button if you messed up, and was there wasn't any obvious benefit or prize for actually figuring out the puzzles within the ideal range anyways. The 'overall' counter seemed like the only score in the game, yet it was quickly forgotten about near the end of the game. I think these puzzles should have been optional for those who aren't keen on puzzle games, which brings me to my last point...

    • The difficulty of the game, while subjective to everyone, seemed to be all over the map. The casual point-and-click stuff was obviously very easy, the puzzles were hard, the (only) action scene near the end of the game could be very difficult for non-gamers, etc. I would suggest to add in difficulty options, ranging from "Tell me a story..." which automates the action sequences and removes the flip puzzles (leaving only the point-and-click stuff), to some sort of a 'hardcore mode' that turns up the difficulty on the puzzles, etc. (for those who like a challenge)

    • The graphics may be a turn-off to some, and while those people may be somewhat shallow for judging a book by it's cover, it would be a good investment to try and improve on them a bit. Personally I enjoyed the 16-bit style but I'm also over 30 years old and grew up on SNES games. I liked how the lack of detail allowed people to, more or less, imagine what the main characters looked like so it was more to their ideals. Perhaps they even linked the likeness of the characters to people they know in their actual lives. So while better graphics would be a boon to the game overall (especially in inspiring interest probably more sales) don't let it get in the way of other more important things, like the story music.

    Thanks for reading.

This game is absolutely amazing. The retro style does fit very well and though it is not much of a 'game' in the traditional sense, it is a wonderful story and an adventure of fabulous imagination. This is definitely a piece of art.

My only complaint is with the ending and its ultimate message, but I won't spoil anything. Everyone has to decide for their own and everyone who loves

This isn't so much a game as it is an interactive book or movie. But boy is it an experience. I'm one of those people who never cries due to a movie or anything, but To The Moon brought me very, very close. If there's one cheap PC game you get, it should hands-down be this.

I randomly purchased it from gog.com for some reason when it was on some sale at some point in the late half of 2013 and did not pay much attention to it until I saw it pop back up again in one of the recent Humble Bundles. Since I finally got around to playing and finishing it I figured I would post some thoughts here.

For a game created with RPG Maker (I want to say XP) it stands out as something worth paying for. Perhaps the nostalgia factor plays a role here what with my personal love of 16-bit RPGs and all but that is just a cosmetic item. This could have been a point and click adventure style game, a quick time event based game, or even a full 3D game utilizing Unity or Unreal or some other popular 3D engine but I give a thumbs up to FreeBird because they knew where they stood with budget and likely other items and did not attempt to bite off more than they could chew in terms of execution. Instead we have a game that emphasizes story and music and one which executes both very well.

    Gameplay:
Repetitive is the best word I can use to describe it. Mostly point and click on objects of interest or that cause the cursor to change and you do some moving around. There are a few fun ones thrown in that I do not wish to spoil but they do not last long and the repetitive portion returns. But it is not a game with the promise of a thrilling or inventive combat system so it should not be judged for lacking such, nor is it meant to be a game that pushes the boundaries of what a mouse and keyboard can do so judging it based on that is also a bad decision. While repetitive, the gameplay itself is solid and does in fact have varying mechanics at times.

    Music:
Solid and at times I daresay perfect for some of the scenes.

    Graphics:
zomg! it looks like pewp! this game was made in 2011!!!!!! That seems to be the attitude of some people and that is rather upsetting. Not every game has to be full 3D with high resolution textures to be considered good or even great. It is not about what it looks like unless that is a selling point. And retro style games are making a strong showing for now so downplaying a game or lowering its rating simply because you want it to look prettier is a rather poor argument. That being said it looked great for what it is.

    Story:
The important part of this game. While the repetitive actions of gathering memory links from a given memory to solve the rather simple puzzle to get to the next memory might make you want to take a break from this game around Act 2 the story itself is what keeps you interested. And no, there is absolutely no way that anybody can guess the actual story without playing well into the game or reading about it/watching videos/etc because that hand is not played or even remotely revealed until after you are close to and for other items even past the midpoint. Certain aspects of the story may be telegraphed early on but that's no different than any other form of media. Whether or not this game touches your heart is going to be a pretty subjective thing, much like whether or not you still enjoy Disney movies or ever did. The game is not for everyone. I have friends I would not suggest this game to as they would miss the point entirely but having said that, personally I really enjoyed this game. I just wish it would have been longer.

The only thing i can knock if i had to are the controls. At times it was a little frustrating trying to move with the mouse. I ended up using the arrow keys to get around to finish the game.

I hope to see more from this team both in narrative and music.

First time playing this type of game. A game purely based on story with little game play. The story and the soundtrack is amazing.

However, the repetitiveness game play could get a bit boring. There were parts where I just wanted the game play to end and for the story to continue on.

Wish the resolution was higher. It caused my second screen to shifted due to the low resolution full screen.

Niel and Eva.. aand their banter is hilarious, theres tons of humor here to be found across this emotional journey, theyre here just doing job, but you cant help but get attached to the love store.. unplaying out right infront of your eyes, from his last moments with his wife River, to their marriage, their first date.. the story telling here is amazing.. in each memory you have a goal, find mementos.. items that can take you deeper and deeper into Johns memories, once you find 5, you can then solve a simple picture puzzle to use that item and go back.. over and over and over, until you can finally get to the right moment to put him on his path to going to the moon..
If to the moon a little too drawn out thouh? Yeah.. I wouldn’t cut too much from this game, but there are definitely moments here and there that could’ve been tightened up, and going through the larger memories in general just isn’t really enjoyable.. the hcarcters move pretty slowly, and youre not realy sure what you should be interacting with, youre kinda just going up to everything in sight, wondering what is it im missing, to make matters worse, though rare.. there are a couple of items where you have to be in the perfect spot to interact with it… for example the table in the beginning, he elevator towards the end.. or even walking of the stairs to the liht house in one sequence..
Negatives aside, To the Moon is a beautiful game made even more beautiful with updated visuals, and a story guaranteed to make you cry at least twice..

To The Moon's charming sense of humor and unabashed ease with tossing around pop culture references (from Dr. Who and Animorphs down to Dragon Ball Z) kept the serious, and at times quite gloomy overtones from feeling too self-serious. And so, with John and River's tale being told, restructured and sent to the moon in a heartfelt and memorable way; I am able to walk away from To The Moon satisfied, and looking forward to the next installment in this world.

If you're into having your tears tugged at, this will definitely be a change from nights spent curling up on the couch spectating those romance flicks that no one else gets. If you're someone who winds up stuck with the aforementioned individual, originally promised beer and tricked into the awkward Kleenex duty, no guilt will be harbored from missing out.
