    PROS
-stunning graphics with crisp textures, detailed environments, and good lighting

-stats on all levels that are accessible at any point in the game
    -customizable difficulty and hud elements
    -"collectible" loot sets
    -bonus mission achievements
    -player skill and equipment improvements
    -aerial takedowns
-unlike predecessors, can only jump when effective, so as not to create noise from failed jumps
    -"swooping" is fun and useful

    CONS
-expansive but linear missions that don't allow backtracking to find all secrets. forced replay?
-tedious but somewhat infrequent quick-time events
-inexplicably inconsistent and limited saving leaves you frequently either unable to return to a specific part of a mission or redoing long sections because of one screw-up
-unusual sound positioning causes some sounds (especially dialogue) to seem like they're closer than they are
    -occasional crashing
-guard NPCs sometimes get stuck in place from loads, interrupted conversations, or disturbances
    -consolitis buy/sell interface
-boss fights and action sequences that have no place in a thief game
-the amount of clutter and environmental detail makes the focus mechanic a necessity
-dumbed-down light levels mean you're either completely visible or mostly invisible
-arbitrary lore and voice actor changes
-cliche asylum mission that tries to be "The Cradle" from Thief 3; starts creepy but ends weird

Overall without any spoilers the storyline was OK. not great but still ok. The voice acting was pretty good, the cut scenes seemed to change volume to the actual game and were actually pretty crappy and not done well. The graphics are awesome, I played with everything maxxed out at 2560x1440 resolution - yes it's a beautiful game don't let others say otherwise. I found that stealing objects and items in the game was pretty much useless near end game I had well over 4 Thousand dollars to spend and I had NO IDEA were a shop was to spend it or upgrade my abilities. I dont think I upgraded 1 single ability apart from the tutorial one that is given to you which was quite a dissapointment. Overall I give the game 7/10 because the graphics, voice acting and general gameplay was interesting and fun overall. if the graphics had of been similar to dishonored then I honestly wouldn't have bothered with the game. don't get me wrong it's Still worth playing for sure - just be sure to get it when it''s on sale. So i've played the previous games in the thief series in my teens. Quite recently I was playing them again on my laptop with the high res textures pack, and while the gameplay was fun, the graphics were understandably an eyesore. I was looking forward to the reboot because I essentially wanted a thief game with updated graphics.
Having spent 10 hours with the reboot, here's my take.

I was looking forward to the reboot because I essentially wanted a thief game with updated graphics.
Having spent 10 hours with the reboot, here's my take. First off, the game looks good. Not jaw dropping, but good. The developers have done a nice job of giving the game a period feel. Second, Stealing is fun. Some of the side quests and main missions create a great atmosphere where you actually feel like a contracted thief. One or two though, are pretty bland. Most of the animations are good, but some like closing a cabinet take too long. I would've also liked a single animation for picking up multiple pieces of loot at once. Certain windows do close behind you, but not doors, so I don't see where those complaints come from.

In my opinion, comparisons to Dishonored are unfair. This is a different type of game. I didn't enjoy the stealth in dishonored, it was always more fun to use magic offensively. In Thief, stealth is fun. It's all you have really. If you're up against more than 1 opponent, you generally won't survive. You're a thief not an armed robber.
The AI falls apart at rare times, but is mostly ok. The audio could've been better. The story is typical of the franchise. Take that for what you will. The City is a disappointment, feeling disjointed because of loading screens and a horrible map. Finding your way around sometimes becomes a chore. It feels more like a small town rather than a large city. Because of this, thief feels at times like a last gen game at times, instead of a current (8th) gen one. Hopefully we'll get a sequel where these issues will be addressed.

The levels are linear somewhat, but it is NOT a Call of Duty sneaker. There's no such thing. If you're good at Thief, you'll see very little action.

In spite of its failings, Thief remains a fun game. I don't compare it to its predecessors. I had an amazing time with those games as a kid but when i replayed them, the same sense of awe wasn't there. I loved Deus Ex, and Deus Ex:HR while fun, didn't hold a candle to that game in my mind. Played on its own merits, this reboot has enough going for it to give you a sneaky good time.

The new Thief definitely has pretty looking graphics and the gameplay is generally solid, however the average plot, rushed ending, audio issues and other bugs may only have you playing the game once and never again. A reasonably fun steampunk stealth FPS for players who have never heard of the original games, but it might be a step too far for veteran fans of the franchise.

I laugh every time some excited moron takes it personally and pukes things like "It's a mess! Who says it's a great game is a liar!!" or to the other end of the spectrum "don't listen those haters, the game is a gem!", and the best are always those who haven't grasped the basics of democracy with pearls like "I was going to give it a 8, but I go with a 10 because the average is too low!".I laugh every time some excited moron takes it personally and pukes things like "It's a mess! This bunch of various killjoys aside, the analysis is, as always, subjective. The plot is plain and uninteresting, the characters forgettable, the sound system is dumbed down and the levels are more linear and cutted by loading times. It's all true, and there are other little things like the rope arrow that you can shoot only in some spots, and the moss arrow that's gone for good, and the map is a mess, and away with all that. Yes, that's sadly real.
    BUT
As a Thief series veteran, and Dark Mode contributer, my opinion is that this fourth installment is immersive like very few before it. The sensation of being a thief is here, crystal and sharp like a knife. The atmosphere, grim and gothic, the sense of persistent danger, it's all here. The slow progress from a dark corner to another, the silent approaching to the unwary guard, the hands taking what is yours to soon become mine, the thieving essence is still there, and better than before.
I believe Thief is not a perfect game. It suffers of many weak points: plot and level design the ugliest of them. Still, if you can put them aside, you will spend 20 hours like a real thief.

However, I myself have never played the original games. And that being said, I'm rather addicted to Thief 4. It's controls are easy grasp, and its movement mechanics are great for it's core purpose of being a stealth game. Physical conflict is something that is encouraged to be avoided, especially when there is more than one guard in the area, making the use of your tools and the shadows all the more fun. The story, while not a brilliant one, can still strike curiosity as you explore the city, read documents/newspapers that are lying around, and listen in on conversations.

That being said, I do feel a tad bit of dissappointment from what I was expecting upon hearing the announcement of the game. The maps are not quite as "open", and getting around some parts of the city are rather simplistic, not leaving much room for creativity in your movements. NPCs (not including guards) hardly interact or acknowledge you, and a lot of the apartment rooms you can break into on the streets never seem to have anyone at home, which, for me, breaks the tension that can keep you so immersed at times. Plus the "focus" ability, which can be incredibly handy from time to time, can still be used even when the focus meter has run dry, simply by repeatedly pressing the focus mode key. While this might not be a problem for some, it makes me feel dirty when I use it...

The game does have a few bugs, for example on ocassion sound levels change, making it hard to hear some conversation, or guards will ocassionally stop and spin in place for a minute or so. However there are already patches releasing to fix such issues, so the developers are at least staying on it.

Overall I do think this is a great game, even if it didn't meet my initial expectations.

The last two story missions however falls short and makes you realize that how uninvested you are in the story itself and the ending is on par with the pre-dlc fix of Mass Effect 3.

But it has many good qualities, if however you have yet to purchase / play Dishonored I would recommend that instead. There you can stealth and / or assassinate to your hearts content with a storyline that is much better.

Visuals are great, I love the art style, dark city in the vein of old London or Prague with grey skies, rain, dirt, the atmosphere is really good. In some levels such as the brothel underground the mood is fantastic, and in the Moira Asylum it's basically a horror experience, those were the 2 highlights of the game for me. Stealth mechanics are mostly working well, spending most of the time in shadows, avoiding light, using sounds and darkness to your advantage, but the main problem for me was the lack of freedom. You are too restricted, no longer you have tons of options how to solve the level, you can't even jump, only on the scripted places, where developers want you too, the same with rope arrows that you can use on just a few prepared spots. Instead of running around the city freely in the night, jumping on rooftops as a true master thief, you are just searching for those scripted places where you can jump, it's restricting as hell and this basically killed all the potential of being a great game. The map is also pretty terrible and ugly. I heard many negative comments about the story and honestly I didn't really mind... until the end. The end is really bad, cheesy and feels like some bad cliche b-movie. Also, I didn't appreciate the bugs, the optimization in some places, bad audio balance, volume off pretty often, cutting off early, subtitles out of sync, even half a year after the release and still not patched, amateurs. But for the most part I had a good time and I still enjoyed my play-through that took me about 15 hours including all the side missions. 7/10 Expand

I had a big expectation about this 'Thief' reboot. But as a fan of the old game, I think it has delivered fairly but not lived up to the level I expected. Thief has some awkward design choices like:
I can't jump or climb in my own way. Only the character will automatically climb up or jump from some ledges whereas in some cases it will not. It makes the movement to feel a bit artificial.

Also in some cases I have to wait almost 5 minutes but still the guards will patrol in the same small area in same manner and I have nothing but to kill them which causes detection.
Now coming to the positive sides, using the shadows and the fabulous 'Swoop' ability, remaining undetected is really satisfying.
The game gives a high level of customization options to play as I wish, like I can turn the 'Focus' ability completely off and there are plenty of other options and the game favors this by rewarding. Also the graphics and world-detail is pretty good.
I had great hope from Eidos after playing Deus Ex Human Revolution which is among the best games I have ever played. But it feels that even being under action-rpg genre, Deus Ex HR was a more satisfying stealth game than Thief. Even the slightest mistake could end in death, and to stay out in off the shadows is certain doom. This is all brought up by the fantastic level design, which gives the player almost life like amounts of freedom. In addition to this, the games graphics are amazing, they're even better than Battlefield 4! However, the games UI is awful, making it hard to select the weapon you want, resulting in some frustrating parts. Also, the AI is some of the worst I've ever seen! For example, at one point in the game I saw two guards, headshoted one of them, and the other one, standing right next to didn't even notice! WTF! And, the story is terrible, mainly because it tries to be more than it is. This is all hindered by Garret's appalling new voice actor, who never puts any expression into anything! I was just a tiny bit disappointed that the general look of it seemed not too far removed (except in quality, which was pretty outstanding) from the previous Thief games, and I have to say that I didn't really like the plot either, but I did enjoy playing this one. The FMV sequences were able to be skipped - which having gone through the in-game movie of Tomb Raider I was pretty pleased about - but I still watched them all once just to get the idea of what the story was.
I thought it was a very polished effort, great graphics, loved the particle effects and the lighting on this one. Didn't like having to shift the same plank of wood every now and then, and don't think my keyboard appreciates having to mash a key to open a window, but it wasn't too far removed from what could be expected.
It's not excellent to the nth degree, but it's definitely worth getting hold of.
I think the only thing I wasn't too happy about was the light gem - whereas in the original you had a purple/blueish hue around Garrett when he was in shadow, we now have a little gem in the corner that seems to only go from white to grey to black in three very short steps. I didn't really like that little bit about it, but generally, the game was fun to play and I would recommend Thief fans play it if they haven't already.

The game itself isn't terrible, compared to a lot of previous half attempted reboots. It's not a perfect AAA game by any means but the price tag suggests to gamers that they should have made an attempt in which case a lot of polishing should have been done.

For one the AI is not perfect, in fact a long way from and very basic for today's standards. Such as a guy who is always taking a piss, he's always there pissing because the developers didn't program him to do anything else, not even walk around the bar for a bit before looping back around. Woman stood in the street checking there hair, and constantly doing it in a 5 second loop over and over again will annoy a lot of gamers. Some people don't get me wrong are walking around, just as watchmen patrolling and having conversations with one another (that being said if you go back to the same area later on they are having the same conversations).

When a game includes a benchmark test I don't see that as a good sign, in fact that tells me throughout the development they have probably been having issues with things like FPS and the general performance at times. I've not really had an issue with it however.

I remember the previous Thief games from years ago, however I was never drawn to them back then. In all fairness when you compare this remake to those of Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem Forever this isn't a bad remake and they've done a half decent job, unfortunately a half decent job in this industry generally isn't good enough.

The controller isn't too shabby and the dark setting is very nice, it's got a decent story behind it and quite a few hours of gameplay involved. For 19.99 you'll probably "just" get your moneys worth but I think Thief is going to be one of those games that's going to be on offer quite a lot so if you are mulling over weather to buy the game then I'd wait until then. You can actually buy it from certain licensing sites for under ÂŁ10 in which yes, you more than get your moneys worth as was with the case for me.

For as many things is has right, it has a number of things it just didn't manged to get across. I think anything under 5 is being over critical and anything over 7 is just being too generous. But each to there own. I'm unsure of what kind of deadlines the developers had to work with which is one thing that many people do not take into consideration. Perhaps another 12 months of development could have seen this game go much further than what it actually ever will, even so in that case it isn't the developers fault. If they had lets say 2-3 years to work on this then yes, disappointing outcome.

As an experienced gamer I've generally enjoyed it so far, but it doesn't have the "can't pull myself away" effect. And once i've completed it I don't see myself ever going back to it, or rushing out to by any future DLC's for it.

-Gameplay - the training level was challenging and fun. I set mostly all options for helping you out at OFF- like focus, direction etc, for a much realistic feeling. Overall the gameplay is great, feels like Thief. Tense hiding moments. I love the dialogue of the NPCs, very entertaining and believable.
I'm pretty hardcore when it comes to gaming style.
    The Bad -
    - cut-scenes had no sound at all !? wtf ?
    - weird glitches in keyboard controls. Sometimes the space bar does nothing, usually it works. Very irritating.
    - sound = plain stereo. I have an X-fi gamer sound card with some $$ Sennheiser headphones. Sound is critical in this game, but it sounds like mostly vanilla stereo sound all through.
-linear progression...no free roaming. Makes you always sure you're in a game, not in a city. Very disappointing.
-cant fall off of ledges ?? what the hell were they thinking ??
    - too much loot everywhere. The trademark of Theif is working hard to get a small amount of loot, so it feels awesome when you get something. This is easter egg hunting for kids...in fact the whole game feels like it was made for 10-12 year olds in some ways.

Sadly, this game is more of a "what could have been", then what it really is. I understand the company had issues, employees quitting, many set backs....I'm glad they got it out the door, however this could have been THE best Thief game ever, easily, with just a few modifications. I couldnt care less if the voice actor isnt the same dude...the new voice is just great too. These are picky details, imo.

I have to give it 7 at best.

Really? 0/10? Seems a little dramatic to me. Is the game a genre changing, award winning game of the year? Probably not. But is it fun? In my opinion, yes. Granted I never played any of the previous games, but taking the game at face value and not reading into the unnecessary amount of negative reviews, I'd say give it a try. You just might enjoy it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a big fan of the Thief/Dark Project franchise. Those games are part the reasons why I'm studying video game creation. Everything in those games are amazing: the dark ambiance they put you in, like if you are a master of the shadow, the greed you have by trying to get 100% of the loot, the fun you have by creating a diversion to escape from the guards... They force you to think about every possible strategy to enter a building and discover every secrets. So far I've finished the Thief serie a multiple of times, a 100% complete without getting spotted or having to knock out anyone, and I was very happy when I learned that Thief 3 would have a sequel. Thief 4 was very fun to play, and the graphics were amazing, but a few things were missing, and I hope to see those things in a Thief 5. Here is my full review of Thief 4, playing on Master difficulty, ghost gameplay...

    Visuals/Sounds/Ambiance:
The graphics are amazing. There is enough polygons on characters so that we don't see much of their edges. The clothes they wear, the weapons they have, everything is well-made. The streets look very realistic. They don't seem empty at all. They are full of small things like boxes, barrels, vases, merchant stalls, carts and rubbish. The textures are also great. You can see that a lot of work as been put into those. The leather looks rough and worn, the velvet looks soft and expensive, the stones and wooden planks look dirty and cold, and you can even see skin pores on characters! The lights and shadows that help you across the levels are very well used. Not too much shadows to make it easy to travel, and not too much light that would seem overdone. Torches, street lamps, oil lamps and "primal effect" do a really good job to create the mood. The music is great as well. I was very surprised to hear dubstep, but I found it a good idea. I also liked the fact that the music change drastically when you are spotted. Good job

    Mechanics/Missions:
The mechanics were very easy to understand. You have the same weapons from before and the same way to move without being seen. There's one thing that really annoyed me, you cannot jump!!! You can't ask me to play a first person game without being able to jump. Sometime a jump can save your life... I still had the feeling that people playing the predatory way were more rewarded than people playing the rightful way. There was some loots almost inaccessible unless by knocking out guards, either because you had to be in the lights for too long or because guards from very far could see you... a bug maybe? There is also the part were you slip yourself between planks and crates by holding E. In the middle of the transition, you have to press E very fast to move a plank. I didn't understood what was the utility of this action in the gameplay, maybe if the player could damage his health by not pressing E fast enough would be better. I also found the missions easy. To enter the building, you have 3 choices: Front door, opened window or the ventilation grid. In the other Thief games, you could use the sewers, find multiple secret panels, use underground ways and even use the fireplace. Usually, there is so many ways to go to an objective that you don't usually escape by the way you went in. There was also not enough civilians or guards, it was so easy to move that I always though that something would jump from behind.

    The narrative:
The narrative is what deceived me in this game. I was very eager to see Viktoria again. She is a major character of the main story, and in Thief 3, it looked almost as if you would see her again. She took your eye for Constantine in Thief 1 and she saved you from father Karras in Thief 2. I though that she would be in Thief 4, but nope. She has to be in Thief 5. She brings so much mysteries in Garrett's world. I was also very surprise that they was no mention of Garrett's mechanical eye that replaced the one that Viktoria took. Didn't Constantine whispered in Garrett's mind that he would come back to take the other one? When Garrett steals from a museum in Thief 3, he find his lost eye on a statue and when you approach it, you can hear Constantine voice...At least Basso was still there.

In conclusion: Thief 4 is amazing regarding the graphics and the ambiance, but the mission are too shorts, too easy and had the felling that there was only one way to do them, regardless of wanting to be detected or not. The fact that there was only 2 characters from the prequels was very deceiving. I'm still going to play Thief 4 a second time to try to finish it at 100%, but I will not have as much fun as with Thief 1, 2 or 3. I hope there will be a Thief 5, with the real sequel, with Viktoria, maybe with Keepers or with Constantine, or with the Lost city for a fourth time. :)

Please give this game a chance! I love it and am currently binging on it. I have to be half way through, and while there are a few glaring issues (cut scenes and the like) the game play itself has been very rewarding. Maybe I'm and idiot but several missions stumped me the focus power felt balance, not over-powered. Sure the game is pretty linear, but since when has that been unacceptable. Occasionally, something things are a little clunky, but it doesn't overshadow anything. The bonus objectives each mission dish out extra gold (for you costly upgrades) giving each level a unique blend of both combat and stealth choices. Sure, there are not factions in this game and less paranormal/metaphysical paraphernalia so the storyline is blander. As far the AI/guards, well I would say they meet expectations. They are unobservant, but several times they kicked my ass, they aren't no pushovers! Don't get me wrong, this Thief is a horse of a different color but I like it! The elements they added and the elements they took away may have made the game more one-dimensional, but it also it a lot less tedious. I feel like a bad ass ninja when I play this game that has it's fair share or rewarding challenges. Seriously, poo poo on the naysayers. Apparently not releasing a remastered HD version of the previous thief games was a huge mistake, because that is what they wanted to play. Expand

In spite of its bland story and some frustrating map design, the return of the oft venerated stealth gameplay that defines the franchise makes Thief's reboot an enjoyable - if flawed - gaming experience.

    Pros:
-The graphics are nice even if you run it on a bit lower settings, so there's eye candy even for 2-3 year old graphics cards, the graphics engine also seems to adapt really well to the situations, depending whether or not there is a lot of action on the screen. Albeit if you play on a 27" or a larger screen the texture's show a lot of saw/jagged edges. I myself use a 27" mainly, but when i hooked up my 32" they were more pronounced.
-Soundscape is brilliant fits the theme of the game like a hand in a tailor made glove.
-The controls work well and they feel responsive, no matter which hardware you use to play, keyboard and mouse or a mouse and small combo control device, or a pad.

    Cons:
-The physics sometimes get a bit wonky.
-Does not capture the overall feeling of the original game, the original game felt more intense, and you tended to die a lot faster in the original if the **** hit the fan.
-The game itself is on the short side, not worth the full price as far as content goes, This is one of many games to follow this sad trend :S

Overall 7/10, better than i feared it would be, worse than i wished.

This one is not a bad game, but it really looks like the were doing it in rush, many things are unfinished like AI, background story in second half of game, and story in general is full of blind spots. If only they had more time...

Characters, atmosphere are extremely powerful. Game is a little bit hardcore so get ready to spend some time to tune in. It is basically not shooter. Using gamepad is much more worthwhile experience than mouse and keyboard.

It may not be a traditional Thief game and the story may be awful but there's still some great stealth to be had. [May 2014, p.66]

This new Thief does a lot things right but can still be rather clumsy at times. Definitely worth trying, though. [Issue #240]
