I love this game, really one of the best games I've played in a very long time. This is what an RPG should be, excellent story, excellent gameplay, stunning visuals, reaslitic dialogue, and a unique alchemy system. I really can't think of the last single player RPG I've enjoyed this much. Kudos CDProject for delivering an amazing gaming experience.

It astonishes me how few people know about this amazing game. It was a great story the first time around with a few minor issues but this version is better in every possible way.

One of the best games ever made. And I have played a lot of rpgs. Consistent story, original themes, choices that effect later game. This version of the witcher is by far a huge improvement, while all the details are not instantly apparent, they show themselves to you until you finally realize the scale of added details. Fantastic masterpiece.

I really enjoyed this game. The storyline(s) are all actually interesting (unlike most other RPGs I've played), not because of the overarching goal (kill bad guy), but because of the way you can watch it develop, if you give it attention. This isn't a game that will force everything of note into your lap, you have to go out and find it. It does not reward lazy playing. Choices I really enjoyed this game. This isn't a game that will force everything of note into your lap, you have to go out and find it. It does not reward lazy playing. Choices are of course, in. Not "Will you eat the baby or give it candy and love" sorts, more like "Will I help the sociopathic terrorists being about racial equality and end persecution or will I help the religious zealots bring stability and order?". Decisions can be hard and have consequences impacting the rest of the game. Every choice you make can very well leave you thinking "Am I helping the right people here?". Personally, I love it. Probably not so great in terms of replayability (thus the lower score), gameplay can get tedious towards the mid-points of most of the chapters ("cmon mister mayor, don't make me run all the way back to the swamp, I just got back from there..."), but the shortcomings are made up for by the story, easily. The best RPG I have played in a very long time. I can't possibly cover all the reasons to experience this game; please do experience it though, you will not be disappointed. Think of all the RPGs that have been over-hyped only to not deliver - bland, shallow, characterless... This game is the polar opposite. A superb game that has to rise above its obscurity.

The loving attention that's been lavished on this game reminds me of what Peter Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings movies -- this game is extremely well done. And it's fun! It's a game for adults, and I don't mean the much-maligned sex cards. It's a game where the story really matters, where the player must make serious moral choices, where instead of Good and Bad, we have lighter grey and darker grey. The people in the slums swear, and the people in the rich section of town are stuck-up. And the fighting animations are GORGEOUS! They did motion capture with professional stunt men to do the animations for combat, and the player character is amazingly graceful in the beginning. As the game progresses, he goes beyond graceful and becomes downright acrobatic -- there were times when I wished it were possible to automate the fighting so that I could watch it more closely, and I've never thought THAT about a game before! I could go on and on, but I've said enough. This is the best RPG I've ever played, and I've played a LOT of 'em. Expand

The Witcher is the greatest momement in RPG history since Gary Gygax added more sides to his dice. The Witcher team has created a dark, stunningly realised world, full of great characters and satisfying moral choices. A 9+ is the only mark you could give this gaming achievement - its that good. The reviewers that gave this game a 4 were either not to bright or distracted with a ball of string.

With few imperfections, the Witcher is one of the most enjoyable games to play. Decorated with beautiful worlds, great attention to detail and impeccable swordplay, punctuated by entertaining and well polished character interactions, sharp and original dialogue, it's unfair to give the mammoth development effort any less than an 10/10.

I've since finished it as the Enhanced Edition. It's improved but still far from perfect: the overlapping quest chains can get tangled and be confusing-- sometimes a quest will bug out and be incompletable; the number of NPC models has increased only by a handful; dialogue trees with nonsensical headers have been improved greatly but you still must zone to see a new dialogue if you've done what the NPC wanted and they have something new to say, and you also have to stop your conversation if a NPC gives you a quest, even though they have more dialogue choices available; most of the truly cringeworthy voiceover has been replaced with professional-quality work, although some perfectly fine stuff from the first version was inexplicably replaced with a lesser quality iteration. Anyway, what makes the game truly great and a truly adult one (once you cut through the pretensions to maturity like profanity and casual sexual encounters and dirty playing cards featuring boobies) is the narrative. It is why the game has such a following; I didn't see it their way at first, but they were right. The dialogue is good stuff, and the themes are 'adult' in the real sense of that word: there is no good and evil, only choices. Moreover, the gameplay is old-school cool as well: The Witcher doesn't condescend to hand-hold like nearly every other game of any genre on the market today; you have to pay attention and have patience. No one will explain it all or make it easy for you. Thankfully, in The Witcher, you are not in a vicarious first-person movie in which the gameworld caters to you so much you might as well be a virtual cow in a virtual chute. Oh, and the combat system has a charm all its own; it's a simple single click mechanic that gets more complicated fighting multiple enemies; a skilled player can turn any fight into a slick ballet of death: the motion-captured swordplay, acrobatics (and the gory finishing coup de graces) are loads of fun. But this is getting too long, so I'll say it like this: The Witcher is a flawed masterpiece: 3 parts one-of the-best RPGs-ever made and, regrettably, 1 part bargain bin title. The recent controversial heir to the RPG throne, Oblivion, was technical perfection and a great game in it's own right; but in terms of truly engrossing story and depth, it can't hold a candle to The Witcher. I'm sort of glad I only caught on to this phenomenal game with the Enhanced Version--after hearing about the uproar regarding crashes, bugs-etc in the original (esp given how desperately people wanted to play this game) because this game is so masterful I would have put up with it then (but ugh). As for the game-- I haven't loved an RPG like this since the Baldur's Gate series (tho I really liked Oblivion & Bioshock). This is definitely a game for mature teens & up (i'm sure some adults aren't even mature enough to handle it). Marvelous gameplay/moral relativity and just a solid storyline even among a genre that's chalk full of cliches (this has them, but done well, you don't care). The consequences of your actions are always there to remind you to be careful of what you say and do and the world you play in feels very alive. Its a very dark game with mature themes that do get presented believably and the language is realistically harsh as well. This is very welcome indeed. RPG bliss in all its glory even if it is a fact that you play a predetermined character. Night and day cycles, character schedules, trust and betrayal, neutrality, cause and effect, action and reaction, its all there to be experienced the way the player wishes. You have a place in the world and it shows. The game grafically is dark, gritty, realistic and especially unwelcome. You are always feeling in constant danger which is a good thing. Music is well done and fitting throughout the game and acting performances are also good enough without winning any oscars. They are just universally well done enough to not detract between great - horrible as many other games of the genre tend to do. If you can bypass the initial shock of the bemany style combat system and sink your teeth a little deeper you are sure going to find a game worth of your time and money and now with the Enhanced edition things are even better since most of the serious flaws that plagued the initial release of the game are no more (like loading times who are now at a perfectly acceptable level instead of absolutely unbearable). Just go get this game and see what the fuss is all about. Expand

Plus, you can, in fact, buy the original game and upgrade it to enhanced version for free (this saves you about 25 bucks), This is the RPG that really aged with the audience. I'm not as old as some of these guys, but I grew up with FF6-7, Chrono Trigger, etc and as those types of RPGs progressed, they really didn't change much as my tastes mutated in leaps and bounds. I mean, you look at final fantasy and it's basically the same melodrama infested RPG it used to be, just now they take more cues from JPOP and anime (which in my mind is a severe detriment). The Witcher, on the other hand, is far more gritty and real. It's a step above the Oblivions and the Fallouts in its story and setting. The game play and graphics still need some work, and the camera takes some getting used to, but this game is just really engrossing, and it pushes the boundaries of the RPG genre to a more adult oriented ground. The main problem I had with games like Oblivion/Fallout and other types of open world games was the lack of a significantly well made plot. The Witcher has a great plot that really keeps it in the focus instead of throwing it to the backburner. In Oblivion, I really never bothered about the plot, preferring to simply do the Assassin's Guild quests and leaving it at that. In The Witcher, there's no such problem. The Witcher does have a myriad of issues though. I don't really care about loading times on my computer, they're not such a big deal. However, there are issues with the graphics/models; they're not very polished. Reviewers say this is the best the engine can do though, so whatever. Another HUGE problem is the map. It blows really bad. Another issue is the camera. Unlike WoW, where right-clicking and holding will allow you to turn the camera, the mouse in The Witcher simply turns whenever you move the mouse. This is really annoying and causes the user to pause a LOT to mess with inventory instead of doing it on the move. I also didn't find any key for auto run. In short, The Witcher is the next step in the RPG genre as it ages with its player base, and a game no RPG fan should miss out on. Expand

The potions and mini-games (gambling, bar fights etc.) are nice touch. But there are still many techinal glitches and bugs and the game may not run well even if you exceed the recommended settings. There are also stupid and boring fetch and kill quests which remind me of modern day MMORPGS: "Bring me ten feathers!". It's a surprise that in a single-player game you even have this kind of empty quests.

This is not a fairy-tale-like RPGish nonsense, it's based on Witcher books which are one of the best European dark fantasy series. Geralt is my favorite character ever in a video game, closely followed by Ezio Auditore. Other characters very also very memorable.
The game offers you a decent size world to explore, but filled with quests, interesting characters and mini-games like epic brawls in pubs. It never feels empty. The monsters are unique to the series, you won't meet any stereotype zombies and vampires. The combat system lacks somewhat, as it's very easy even on hard difficulty. It's backed up by excellent alchemy system, each potion really matters and have unique and powerful effects. Creating them is surprisingly satisfying, and since you can have only a few active due to them being toxic you need to choose carefully. There are also firecrackers and oils, so the crafting system is pretty robust. Your character gains talents that are basically skill points, skill trees are HUGE but not overwhelming and each skill does something different and interesting.
As a bonus the game comes with a level editor so you can play player-created maps and quests after finishing the main story line.
So does the Witcher have any flaws?
Well the voice acting of main characters is superb, but minor characters very often have same voices, which is somewhat annoying. Also like I mentioned above combat is very easy once you grasp the basics.
The world could have been bigger, it often feels like you don't have much space to breathe although it's never empty !

Worse than the second part in the series, but still a great game on it's own it earns a 9/10

This game has a really good story and many hours of gameplay. Choices make outcomes, decisions are valued.

I did not like that it took about three chapters to get the hang of the battle system, and even when I did it was not that great. The storyline, however, is superb.

Since it's not open world (I'm spoiled by open world/sandbox RPG games now), there are no shortcuts and you really do have to go on one specific route to get to where you need to go. That got annoying to the point where I couldn't play through it for too long because of all the boring, reptitive, and unnecessary back and forth I had to do.

Some fun monsters to fight. Really well done environments add to the immersion. Talents system was simple and fighting mechanics take a little getting used to but are easy enough. Gameplay is okay, but for me this was a story and character-driven game more than the actual action itself, which was a lot of fun at times but nothing too special at other times.

The world is on perfect level: The NPCs got a lot of life, there are many details to discover, the political background is detailed and complex. In addition you have very good music. The dialogs are on top level also: adult, happy, direct. One of the best, I could read since a long time. The story is well written and well presented. Not a big epos, but on a very good level. If you didnt have enough of this game, you can download a lot of mods. I played with a texture mod, that enhanced the graphic from 2011.

The problem: the gameplay and that means, the core of every game: In the beginning I was excited about it, but it changed fastly. The fighting with the sword is mostly a reaction game, greetings from arcade games. In addition the controling is very bad, sometimes Gerald simply didnt do the commands, because the game played the animations to the end. There are some other gameplay elements, that are annoying. Yes, the inventar is still too small.

Result: Surely a very good game, but not top.

My friends recommended me this game. I was struggling a lot in the beginning as well as everyone who played The Witcher. I hated this game and at times came very close to uninstalling it. But I always thought "they said its good, there must be more to it" and kept playing. Indeed, after 3-5 hours into the game I understood. Behind a complicated story, totally ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ talents and combat mechanics there lies one of the best RPG games I've ever played. After you grip the overall gameplay it will stop to irritate you and patterns will start to display. You will be able to enjoy the rich and immersive story, full of intrigues and twists and also those weird combats. The story is the strongest part of the game, it is very mature where decisions are hard with serious consequences and are never good or evil. They just define your political and personal preferences as you progress from an outcast monster killer. The game is also very long. I like to fulfill every quest, check all chests and barrels and enjoy games in general. With such approach, The Witcher took me 65 hours to finish. Every second was definitely worth it. Do yourself a favor, buy the game and play it. Don't get demotivated by prologue and the first act, keep playing and eventually you will get consumed, I guarantee you that. Last time this happened to me was when I played Fallout 2 few years ago, this game quite reminded me of it and I thank its creators for that.

I'd tried a few times to enjoy this game before and it had always eluded me. With Witcher 3 coming up and looking so impressive I decided I would plant myself in front of Witcher 2 until I had given it time to grow on me or cement my disdain for it.
I have to say I'm glad I did. Before, the combat didn't make sense, the quests seemed ambiguous and the general flow of the game felt plodding and ponderous.
This time, something clicked and I found that with some patience I learnt how the combat was meant to feel and I fell in love with it (mostly). The seamless jump from an Aard sign to stun, to a quick attack to close, then heavy attacks to tear chunks from the enemies health is addictive and gripping. My only gripe is that most fights tend to be either simple affairs of one or two-hitting trash enemies or somewhat frustrating Yrden/backstab fests while you dodge multitudes of other enemies. It sounds worse than it is though, the combat is punchy and satisfying and I can’t wait for more in Witcher 3.
The questing system is still a bit frustrating. The game doesn’t warn you when you’re about to fail quests because you cross an arbitrary point in the story that is incompatible with whatever side quest you might have been working on. Again, this is a minor complaint, the system isn’t punitive and for the most part it’s clear when you’re about to enter a major story quest and need to wrap things up before you go on.
I don’t know what it was that clicked, but I really can’t think of much to fault this game on. If Witcher 3 is everything we’ve been promised then I can only imagine where RPG’s will go from here, because it will be hard to match, let alone beat.

Sound: Amazing calming themes, and great voice acting. 10.
Gameplay: The gameplay is unique because it’s different from any game that I have played before. For starters the combat system is what makes this game unique. You have three different stances and different weapons which each are for particular type of enemies. Say your fighting a short dwarf, a stance changed to the hip would allow you to kill that particular enemy quicker, and if there’s a taller or bigger enemy that is attacking then a stance change where the witcher holds the sword above his head would be required. Now it’s not free combat where you just freely swing your weapon around. Instead you click on an enemy and the witcher begins to attack, then the arrow lights up and you must time your clicks with the mouse to keep the flow of combat going. Though this is something new, at times it feels overused and begins to get boring. Althought its always satisfying to switch to the lowest stance and hit enemies that surround you. The game is also a open world game similar to the elder scrolls games, but instead broken into chapter with each new chapter taking you to a newer area, or expanding on a previous one. The game is also similar to mass effect with conversation, and even allows you to make several choices which make an impact on the story. You can also develop relationships with characters such as romance, and earn sex cards for doing so. The leveling system is simple and there are plenty of skills to go through, although some may find it complex at first. The game allows for professions such as alchemy. 9.
Story: I got lost trying to keep up with the story, because in the beginning its boring, but as you progress through the game, and near the end, it is satisfying. The game ends with a cliff hanger. 9.
Lasting Appeal: Took me about 18 hours to complete the game, it’s definitely worth the 5 or 10 bucks I bought it from a steam sale (can’t remember exact price). 10.
Overall Score: 9.2 out of 10.

The Witcher is an RPG that tries to do things a little bit differently.
Focus is on preparation of your battle, not on the battle itself: the right potions, bombs and skills will make any battle easy but lack of them may make simple battles next to impossible (depending on difficulty).

It gives you a fantasy medieval universe yet it is a dark one where racism, hate, politic backstabbing and sickness plague its inhabitants.

If you enjoy an RPG with a good story and deep choices or you simply want to see how The Witcher began (in the games) then this game is definitely worth picking up.

Keep in mind that this game has little hand-holding and you may feel lost at times. You may also encounter some graphical glitches like I have (beards were flying everywhere xD).

I am a fan of the Witcher series since I've read the books back in 2005 or so (and this fact really helped enjoy the game better) however even if you haven't read the books - this is a very good RPG in itself.

    The pros:
+ Good quality graphics, not a big deal for me gotta get that out of the way.
    + Wonderful soundtrack. Really immersive.
+ A nice "dark fantasy" world. Where elves get racially discriminated, town guards take drugs as bribes, and use said drugs... Witches are trying to survive the ignorant mod that fears and hates them.
+ No "good vs. evil" - just a lot of people (and other creatures) with their conflicting goals, feels and wants.
+ With the above said - often you can decide who to help and how to judge those around you.
+ A lot of character development. You start as a guy who can barely deal with a couple rabid dogs, and end up taking out dragons (well, not quite 40-meter-long High Dragons like those found in Dragon Age, but 6-meter-long Wyverns) - multiple at a time, and beating much more dangerous creatures, as well as armed human enemies (mages, angry Templars, etc).
+ Not a lot of grinding for better gear. In fact you start out with quite decent gear: a Witcher's Steel and Silver sword, and not until quite late in the game can you find a weapon that's better.
+ There are ways to get very VERY powerful, if you figure out how to. It's no cheating or bug, just strategies that you HAVE TO learn if you wanna play on HARD. And there are multiple ones.
+ There are rune stones to use as a permanent upgrade to a sword, and it's nice that the better gear is rare and interesting to find, craft and upgrade (rather than something you can buy from the town merchant - just collect 100'000 gold, like in many RPGs)
+ Unique items are obtained through truly unique experiences, that may make you value them to a point that I chose to keep that item throughout Witcher-II game (using the import save feature)
+ No **** quests like "go hunt 10 squirrels and bring me the furs". Most quests are backed with a story that something really bad happened, and only a Witcher can help the person in need.
+ The quests match the protagonist, and feel on-the-spot. So unlike Commander Shepard saving the galaxy, and then being told to deal with some scumbags that stole something from a merchant, or the Inquisitor in Dragon Age looking for a lost cow.
+ Interesting characters. Many from the book. Yes you can make relationships with them, and even cheat on them if you wish to :-)
+ Overall, there are a lot of strategic and tactical things you are encouraged to learn, and a few things to upgrade (weapon and armor), but in a thoughtful way, (rather than the grind-to-get-top-level-gear way) the game is really hard to play on HARD unless you understand how to play it right.

    Cons:
    - You can't jump over a knee-high fence. WTF. But sometimes you can jump over the head of an enemy - this happens somewhat
    - The combat is a bit scripted... Not very manual control (no jump, no sprint, no duck or block), kind of an RTS-like feel to it. The "click at right time to strike a combo" is not bad, but gets old a bit too quickly. Maybe a love-it-or-hate-it thing.
    - The game world is a few isolated locations. They aren't very big either. Granted, they are nicely detailed, but will probably feel tiny to players coming from TES.

    - some parts are really intense
    - deep, immersive story
    - nice music, beautiful landscapes, amazing architecture
    - seducing women is kind of fun
    - becoming master of dice poker and fist fighting is also kind of fun
    - original monsters

    MEH:
    - somewhere midgame you get a lot of bothersome "run here, talk, run there, talk" quests
    - you need to adjust to game's combat system
    - first 30-90 minutes of the game are kind of boring

    CONS:
    - you don't get to use many weapons or armors, because other weapons than swords are not usable in witcher battle styles making them ineffective especially later in the game
    - after you start feeling which skills are important and focus on developing them, fighting becomes quite easy

Overall: you need to bite the bullet and endure the first hour of the game. After that you get a really good, immersive RPG with damn good story and lots of locations.

Unfortunately, the game is slow to start, and the story doesn't really move forward until reaching Chapter 2 and 3. The combat system is similar in that it feels clunky initially, but you learn to tolerate and even enjoy it upon learning more signs and becoming more familiar with it, though fighting drowners and other trash slowly becomes more arduous and repetitive as you progress. Other criticisms include the sheer amount of backtracking there is, particularly in chapters 1, 2 and 4. Also, the weird quest progression in chapter 2.

Great meaningful story is definitely the strongest advantage of the game. What developers made out of the old NWN engine is simply astonishing. One of the few cRPGs that are not only about grinding monsters, collecting loot and leveling up, must-play for fans of the genre.

On the bad side - combat system makes encounters repetitive, so if you're a lot into action games, lower the score to 8/10.

On a bad side, I encountered several crashes on windows 10. The game uses the aurora engine which is known for its bugs and map limitations. It sucks that there are very few face models for NPCs, and that I cant customize Geralt at all (there are a total of three armors in the whole game).
The combat is not that great but you get used to it and after a few hours of playtime it doesn't represent a problem anymore.
In the end this is a very good lengthy RPG (it took me 44 hours with a few side quests done) with a mature tone and interesting storyline.

Some people say it's mysogynist, I don't mind, that is their opinion. But this game is not made with the idea to be offensive to women, but to portray how it actually was in medieval times, when women certainly did not have the same rights as men.

Back on topic, if you played TW2 or TW3 before touching this, you will probably not enjoy it as much as I did, infact I didn't like TW2 one bit when I seen all the difference from the first game to the second game. To this day I don't consider TW2 a true RPG, but more of a half life with rpg elements forced in.
Then there's the debate of combat, how combat isn't very good. Well my opinion is that the combat is pretty good, with all the different styles you had to choose from and adapt depending on your enemy, and the animtions/executions were pretty satisfying I think. There is no dodging, which is probably the most iconic thing of TW2 combat, and that's just not good in my opinion.

Anyway, story isn't that bad with iconic characters growing on you as you progress int he game.

The one thing the game is severely, objectively, lacking in is the voice acting department. It has really low quality but then again the game is pretty low budget. In the Enhanced Edition they re-did almost all of Geralt's lines and maybe others, but when you find old lines it's pretty funny to see how bad they were.
The graphics aren't half bad either, with a few mods making them even better. I myself didn't use any mods for my first paythrough, and would definitely use a few if I'm ever planning to play it again.

In the next couple of paragraphs, I'll try to explain how did this relatively unrefined and rough around the edges game, ended up on my All-Time greatest RPG list.

First of all, I played the Enhanced Edition so I'll be talking about this one and not the regular version of the game. Now let's start with the graphics which, I think are roughly on par with Oblivion and Neverwinter Nights 2, but those games are four years old now so to be frank, The Witcher EE doesn't really look all that great. But nevertheless, graphics aren't that important, would argue some. What makes this game stand out is the story and how it's presented. It's centered around a witcher (a monster slayer) who is trying to hunt down members of a certain criminal organization called the Salamandra. It turns out that the Salamandra is much larger than it appeared to be at first glance. Also, it's important to note that the decisions you make in the game will change the course of some events later in the game, much like in Deus Ex. Those decisions also have an impact on The Witcher 2 if you will still have the first game installed on your hard drive. Some of the characters in The Witcher are very well done and I don't mean graphically. That includes the main protagonist Gerald and some of his girlfriends, namely Shani and Triss. The Witcher is, unlike most other RPGs such as Dungeon Siege, Titan Quest etc., a very dark themed game. Perhaps not as grim and dark as Diablo games, but still very dark. Even though the combat system is very similar to other RPG games, it's still innovative enough to not get repetitive after a while. Also I have to note that there are considerably less fighting in this game than in most other RPG games which means The Witcher isn't exactly a classic hack and slash game. There are some larger battles with maybe six or seven enemies at once, but that's about it. Other than that, herbalism and alchemy are pretty big and well made parts of the game. I like how Gerald learns about these things from the books.

But there are also some problems with The Witcher. First of all, if you have a single-core processor or a slow dual-core one and are considering buying this game, just forget about it. It will stutter like hell in the crowded city of Vizima, perhaps even in the swamps. And that brings me to another part where this game isn't doing all that well. The swamps. The most boring part of the game, mainly because the beasts living there will always try to kill you and there is basically no way around that so you'll have to fight your way through their forces over and over again because the beasts are constantly respawning. This is the only part of the game that reminded me of other more classic RPG games. In the above paragraph I also mentioned that the graphics aren't that good which is very obvious with the character models in cut-scenes. Another thing that I mentioned in the previous paragraph is that The Witcher is not a classic RPG game. Yes you still level up and you can upgrade Geralds skills such as strength, dexterity etc. but in this game, there are only around ten or so weapons to use and I bet you'll only be using the two witcher swords, because they are by far the best and coolest weapons in the game. That's a bit of a shame because I always liked a hunt for better and bigger weapons in other games. For example, I am one of those few who liked Hellgate: London even though it had nothing to offer besides the chase for better and bigger weapons. Lastly, there are some bugs in the game and it can crash to desktop, so do not forget to save your progress every now and then.

All in all The Witcher isn't a perfect game, but it's innovative in some areas, deep in others and generally very fun to play which is probably it's most important characteristic. Oblivion is still the best recent RPG out there but The Witcher in the second place isn't far behind.

The setting of the game, based on the works of Andrzej Sapkowski, is fairly grim and mature, with a lot of violence, profanity and nudity. Most of the storyline is relatively low-key, being centered on finding out what exactly is going on around you, killing monsters, and solving mysteries – though there is also the factional conflict, political intrigue, and backstabbing.

The main strength of the game is its focus on choices and consequences. Eschewing the simplistic "good/evil/random" options, The Witcher offers decisions in a morally grey area, often forcing the player to choose between the lesser of several evils. The character system is interesting but not overwhelmingly complex, featuring several different spells and swordfighting styles. A delightful addition is the excellent alchemy system, which allows the player to create a large variety of potions used in lieu of the traditional buff spells. The combat is fun, but while the rhythm-based fighting feels novel at first, it gets rather easy once you get the hang of it.

Overall, you should play The Witcher if you are looking for an atmospheric action RPG in a gritty setting with an outstanding story, colorful characters, and a great soundtrack. Oh, and **** Everybody loves ****

The Witcher is still a fantastic RPG even by today’s standards. While the game really does show its age (especially in terms of game design, interface, and combat), it truly sets the tone for the sequels in quest design, story, and the overall atmosphere.

The visuals are still pretty damn impressive even for a 13 year old game. I can imagine the graphics blowing everyone away when it first released. In good old Witcher fashion, the music is beautiful and a pleasure to listen to. Preparation is (at least on the hardest difficulty) paramount: taking on the various monsters will require you to read about their strengths and weaknesses as well as preparing the necessary potions or oils to be successful. However, the “combat” is very bare-bones. Fighting is done automatically and boils down to timing your mouse clicks in a certain rhythm to perform the next chain of a combo. Is it the most engaging combat system ever? Definitely not, but it’s pretty awesome and oddly satisfying to watch Geralt pull off some pretty sweet combos. The bread and butter, however, is the atmosphere and tone the game sets. Everything from the story, to side quests, to the many characters you run into will ask you to make some difficult choices that will impact the story. It does a really good job of asking yourself what the lesser evil is in all the choices you make.

The game does run into a few issues. For a game made in 2007, there are just some unexplained performance issues I ran into. My system is well above what’s required to run this, but I ran into some FPS problems in certain areas. My biggest gripe is that you can miss quests entirely or miss the chance of turning in completed quests if you advance the story far enough. It really isn’t an issue in the grand scheme, but it’s just a bummer missing out on some of the story because you didn’t know you had to finish quests before a certain point of the story.

Honestly, if you played and enjoyed The Witcher 2 and 3, go back to its roots and play this one. It might take some time for you to warm up to this game, but it really is an awesome RPG. Yes, it is a bit dated, and yes, some parts of the game can be frustrating, but it’s more than worth your time to experience this very underrated title.

Writing is good (if you ignore that almost every female character instantly tries to have sex with protagonist), but in the Wild Hunt it was better, especially for the side quests. Player's choices are plenty and a lot of them are even impactfull.

    and that's it.
The rest is pure positive, the characters are SO MEMORABLE, on a game moved by player choice you get conflicted about what to do in almost all of them, concerned about what will become of the characters, what will become of the witcher. The game is how choices have consequences, and it flat out tells you in the beginning, in a not so subtle way. The monsters are creative and their relation to the world and how witchers react to them is something fresh and new.
The music is really good, the sound was suprisingly awesome by the time, and the voice acting never made me lose any immersion.

    - Main story line is somehow predictable

While the graphics and mechanics may have been a little dated even at the time of the release, Witcher's story is very well thought out, and created a great foundation for the future of the series. The rural, Slavic atmosphere of the game is genuinely one of the best.

Played the game for the first time in 2013. But the hands reached the last parts, only the nearest time. A story, a frank picture with allusions to sex and cards of girls, various monsters (with some you need to prepare for battle in advance, and not just run screaming "for the motherland"), walking through the spacious locations, mixing the elixirs... it was a cool adventure. And, of course, it could be advised to anyone. Unless, the outdated graphics won't confuse you. Expand

Amazing witcher universe with its dark theme and great characters. I just cant give it higher score because of the old- school combat system which was boring for me its just about spaming one button and sometimes using the witcher signs.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition is very good games. As for me, craft, locations, dialogs are amazing, but game has many problems with fighting. Its so bored. If you want to dive into the world of fantasy and an amazing story, buy.

The music by Adam Skorupa and Paweł Błaszczak is wonderful. The game is part of history, and thoroughly enjoyable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now that I played this 11 years after release, it's still for sure a masterpiece. The elements I treasure in WH are mostly there: deep plot and razor sharp lines, unique sense of humor, consistent character arc without limitations to simple good or evil. The fact that there won't be another Witcher game is simply depressing. Really like the part about Alvin which is a pleasant surprise. Expand

The main adventure still has serious pacing problems, combat's still too easy for the most part, and load times -- though reduced -- continue to get in the way of the action.
  2. The new and improved package is increasingly attractive. There are still some rough edges, and moments of genuine drama are still undercut by how they're performed, but this is an agreeably driven RPG in an agreeably ornate package.

Finally, The Witcher fulfills its potential, and, best of all, it's available as a free update, just in case you bought it anyway. [Nov 2008, p.110]
