What can I say, I won't even bother to review any other games but this game and its developers deserve it. I have played this game through 3 times now and have something like 300-400 hours put in to it and I haven't encountered many bugs, in fact I can't remember any right now, I'm sure there has been couple small ones but nothing major.

The combat is amazing! Its very responsive and the animations are top notch, it also isn't too hard for new players (except for couple boss fights). For better players it offers options to execute the combat more efficiently, quickly and with style. And its not just slashing swords around, you can also use these abilities called signs which introduce a whole new layer to the combat. For example one is called Aard, its a telekinetic wave which pushes the enemy backwards. There's so much different enemies and enemy types too.

Graphics look very good. Some textures look different from what other games are usually offering in terms of style, water for example, I've never seen that style water in any other game but I think it looks absolutely amazing! Forests are very dense without any frame drops unlike most other games, which usually only have a few trees and bushes. No complaints in this part either.

The map is very large and it has been done very well. It doesn't feel empty at any point. It feels much more larger than many other game maps because you have to travel by walking, on a horse or in some cases on a boat.

There is a large amount of different loot and different swords, armors, armor sets etc. And the Blood and Wine expansion pack even introduced some customization for them. I guess I could mention here that the skill tree system has also been done very well and introduces new tactics into combat as well.

Story is one of the best selling points for this game. You can jump in to this game even if you haven't played the previous games or haven't read the books and the story will still suck you in. However there might be some references you might not get if you don't play the previous games or read the books. I personally only played Witcher 2 before this game and now because of Witcher 3 I will read the books because the story is just that amazing, and I NEVER read books.

My only negative thing to say about this game is that it has not been ported to Linux.

This is CD Project Red Magnum Opus, the graphics are astounding, the setpieces are amazing, the world feels alive, all the cities, residents, farmers, monsters, everything seems to be there for a reason and because of it the immersion on this world is instant.
The characters are timeless, even those that you might not like have a backstory that makes you understand them at least. The side characters? they have the same treatment! The villains? they have the same too! Nothing and no one was created in this game just to be there! The voice acting is spot on! I can hear their voices even when I read the books.
The story is really intriguing and if never played a witcher game, saw the series or read the books, it don't matter, they give enough information to make you not feel lost and at the same time not too much to feel overwhelmed.
    This game is a 11/10!

There is so much to do and explore in this amazing world and 95% of it is fun, unlike most big RPGs like this, where half the content is grindy, repetitive and boring. I seriously cannot put into words how incredible of an experience this game is, so I won't even attempt and I'll try to keep this short. The only bad thing I can say about this game are the glitches, but I haven't run into a single gamebreaking one yet, and CDPR seem to be doing everything they can to fix those ASAP, unlike most developers nowadays. But the pros outnumber the cons at least 10:1.

Overall, this is one of the best games I have ever played. You can see the passion and the hard work that CDPR put into this game. It is truly a beautiful and immersive experience. Some parts will make you laugh, others will make you cry and, when the music kicks in and you draw your sword, you will feel like a Witcher.

I recommend this game to anyone who likes RPGs and even if you don't, I'd consider giving this one a shot. There is enough content in here to justify a $120 price tag, so don't worry about that.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the best games I have ever played and the best RPG I have ever played by far.

Although I rate it as 8, I'm hardly dissapointed - this 82 million dollars game being compared to Red Dead Redemption 2 and nominated as game of the decade drags unrealistic expectations from me. - Relic itemization is pretty much null. You only use Witcher gear if you want to be at the best level. The relic stuff is pretty much inferior, so it's sold to a shopkeeper (blacksmith, etc). There are only a few items worth equipping.
    - The 2nd half of an important event (After blah blah) looks kind of rushed and it's bad compared to the 1st half. It gave the sense of "That's it? Wow I expected more but this was quick". It has good moments, but I feel like a little development time to polish it would increase the story's rating.
    - The combat could be a bit better. It's pretty much "dodge etc". Even some monsters look repetitive.

Aside from this, it's such a breathtaking game.

At one point in the story, the game was asking me to track someone down, so they can tell me where to find someone else, so that i can find another person, with the ultimate goal of finding ciri, that i wasnt a fan of. The side quests though, are brilliant. There are so many and all vary so much. Its incredible how they managed to make so many different stories. I did the side quests along with the main story, in times where it felt appropriate to do them and when i felt that doing them fitted the plot, or when they were closest to me, which is how I believe they should be done. I know some like to do the side **** after finishing the main story, but i believe this will lower the overall experience. Every single piece of optional dialogue, i clicked on because i was genuinely interested in what was happening and wanted to find out more. I love the lore also, and there is A LOT of lore. I played this game prior to reading the books or playing the previous games, but post watching the show (which i didnt really enjoy) so coming into it i knew almost nothing besides some of the main characters ( i was so confused who dandelion was) and i was still so fascinated by everything. Gameplay wise, its just sorta mediocre. Its not bad but its not all that. It works and when making a build that suits you more, it does get more fun. Also when not spamming quen, the fighting will start to vary more. But the fact that you can literally spam the dodge button in any direction and you will be invincible, makes it kinda easy. Even on deathmarch, the game just didnt give much of a challenge after the beginning. Please do play on deathmarch by the way, because thats the only time u will want to actually use oils and the correct bombs and potions and **** to do certain boss fights, and actually feel like without them you wouldnt be able to do the boss fight anywhere near as effectively. There is a noticeable amount of bugs in the game, roach (the horse) for example i often want to behead because pf constantly getting stuck. Besides that though, any other bugs arnt really that annoying and the ones that are wont show up that often, but they are definitely there. The play time u get from this game as well is amazing. Any play through u do will easily go past the 100h mark. If it wernt for the bugs and if the novigrad part of the game was so “find this person to find this person”, then i would give it a 10 out of 10. But considering the bugs are most times a very minor inconvenience as the horse getting stuck only lasts about a second, and the novigrad part still has interesting lore and stories, i think this game is still the best thing ive ever played, and ive played a lot of story mode games. Witcher III is a great game no doubt, but it isn't without its issues and bugs. The game is highly demanding on your system, my system runs very hot when playing at medium settings - something GTA V at Very High settings doesn't even do - this is how demanding Witcher 3 is on your system.

The story and quests are carefully crafted and over many interesting twists along its very long path, often leading the player into finding new side quests or contracts. Each town has a board which uncovers many explorable areas, these are the time consuming part of Witcher 3, of course you don' t have to do these but you'll be missing out on plenty of loot and gold.

The major issues with Witcher 3, besides the high system demands are fairly easy to describe, the swimming controls are fairly poor, the crossbow is fairly useless on land, but instantly kills monsters underwater.. and gwent is a major mess.

Gwent needs plenty of rebalancing and patches to be really a viable source of fun, I'm sure other people could argue that but lets face facts, the developers messed up the Gwent mini-game - Its a source of major frustration, many AI players blatantly cheat and the outcome of the game more or less is decided before you even play, far too many peasants or basic gwent players have overpowered decks with multiple hero cards, which 'always' appear - where as, your best cards hardly ever appear. A gwent card seller mod needs to be created to bypass this terrible system.

The biggest concern is that the developers are going to sell Gwent DLC packs, because getting better gwent cards is nearly impossible, you get a few quests to face seasoned players which will award you with some better cards, but some of these matches again - are a frustrating mess when the AI throws out some nearly perfect card combinations, forcing the player to retry the match over and over again. Unfortunately, little strategy can be used because the AI uses far too many cheap tricks, making the whole mini-game far less fun, and more of an exercise in patience.

The other 5% the player will frantically spam light attacks and stunlock every enemy to death. The pretty animations brilliantly hide the fact that the combat system couldn't be any more simplistic and free of any kind of challenge. The Character of Geralt is already overpowered at the start of the game, as someone who is stronger than any human or monster and a master of Swordfighting, Crossbows, Magic and with superhuman strength and endurance. Not only is the character stronger than everything in the game by lore, also will he not change a thing about the gameplay for the whole game - there is no feeling of progression whatsoever, it's fast attack spam for 100% of the fights. Also enemies respawn and scale, making the huge, but stale world even more static.
The combat itself is worth about 1 point and the other activities in the game also are worth a single point. Even the crafting system doesn't really score, since the items the players gets from that don't matter compared to what he can get from other sources and faster and easier at that. At least the game has a lot of content, which nets a third point. But what good is a huge world like that if it's filled with only meaningless activities in and between following map markers?

    Story: 8/10

Story in the witcher is very polarizing. Some people love it, other people hate it. The plot itself certainly isn't as epic as one would expect and the overpowered nature of the main character really leaves very little room for actual surprises. Personally I dislike everything about the characters, the plot and most of the dialogues. However, everything adheres to high standards - just not everyones standards - and the overall quality and detail are extremely good. As per usual for most games though, the story loses drive after the first area and stays comparatively underwhelming for most of the middle of the game, where the underwhelming gameplay is much more noticeable, so that's -2 points.

    Summary: 6/10
The game can be a 10/10 for people that love cutscenes - but then a movie might be a better investment.
A more realistic scoring would be either 6 or 7 out of 10, depending on how much one is bothered by the cutscenes and the follow the marker gameplay. That score might seem low, but if one looks past the fancy graphics and sex scenes, the game really has very little to offer in terms of actual player interaction with the world and gameplay, which is after all the core of a game.

Main story (the side quest not really, maybe some of them) is fantastic, the music is great, but this game tried to hard to be sandbox or to be Skyrim, and it fails. It becomes so boring. Also i am finding the graphic very bad. Don't feel the deep of the distant view, can't feel the monsters movement when they going to attack, its nothing like Dark Souls or Skyrim in this matter. I liked previous 2 Witcher games more. this is only my opinion ofc. But the game is still worth the many as it is long and sometimes rewarding so yeah grab it. Oh, and the fights... 2 attacks for whole game is way to low to make me happy in an action type rpg. I wouldn't mind that in games like Neverwinter Nights or newest Pillars of eternity but when it comes to an action-rpg then proper action is required, and here the game fails again... Expand

Let me start by saying I love the Witcher series. 1 and 2 remain two of my all-time favorite games.

    1. It's been turned into an mmo (grinding and exponential power curve).
    2. Terrible controls. Geralt handles like a geriatric boat. I can't recall being so frustrated by my inability to get my character to do what I want in any game ever.
    3. Lackluster, or at least slow-to-start, story. I've been playing for maybe 20 hours, and so far I've pretty much just been running around and killing dudes with names that are synonyms for "thug" (Bandits, Renegades, Pirates, and Deserters that I can remember so far... despite having taking a moment to defend a deserter earlier in the game). It's clear there's something else going on, but I haven't been swept up into it like I did in the other two games. I'm chasing someone who, in cut scenes, is much more fun to play as than Geralt.

    Lesser problems include:
    1. a "gameplay" mechanic where Geralt scarfs food in combat, downing pounds and pounds of raw meat to stay in the fight. It's a little horrifying to imagine.
    2. a tedious mechanic were many monsters regenerate at insane rates. Rather than finding smart ways to shut down the regeneration, nope, you're just expected to gain a few levels and hack them apart faster.
    3. a tedious weapon/armor durability mechanic.
    4. I have a hard time saying why, but combat just feels frustrating, and not fun. I generally make a point of playing every game on a hard difficulty... but this time I fought a couple fights and decided that it just wasn't worth it. It's sufficiently annoying that I just want to plow through it and get on to the plot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What I liked:
    - Quests except for a few are very interesting and fun. That's fetch quests made right.
    - Whether it be the world or it's characters, it's simply the most beautifully crafted game I've played to date.
    - Branching paths for replay value.
    - Engaging story from start to finish.
    - Superb voice acting.
    - Ciri knows how to fight with a sword better than Geralt
    - There's a bit of comedy and lots of easter eggs to make you smile every once in a while
    - Free DLC's!!!

    What I disliked:
    - Combat albeit capable of the getting the job done is just infuriatingly CLUNKY and unsatisfying. A downgrade from the Witcher 2 where Geralt's sword skills were far superior in every way. Before, Geralt would execute a lunging thrust or a spinning slash that EFFECTIVELY closes the gap and would actually connect. Now his regular attacks will make him spin around 90% of time regardless of how near or far the target is and end up missing 50% of the time, much like the UNSKILLED hero wannabe from Risen 3... Also geralt's recovery from a stun is just too long, must be his age...
    - Geralt's controls out of combat is very clunky as well. While it feels like he is stuck in mud during combat, it is very loose and slippery during exploration.
    - The horse much like Geralt feels out of control.
    - Boat exploration, combat and water activities are mind-numbingly cumbersome and unrewarding. You mainly find junk from underwater chests. Underwater combat is just a matter of pressing a button when an enemy is nearby for a 1 hit kill. Now imagine that clunky combat in the narrow confines of a boat...
    - With clunky unsatisfying combat and extremely low exp gain from killing monsters, you're better off ignoring them if you are not short on crafting materials
    - Very few monster variations. Although the bestiary wants you to believe that there are lots of unique monsters in the game, they're nothing more than RESKINS......... and how many of these monsters are capable of back jumping to swiftly avoid your slow inaccurate but flashy spinning attacks....
    - It takes too long before you can actually make an effective build since exp gain is very low, skill slots are very limited and gaining them between level ups is far apart.... Requiring you to put a set number of skill points before the next tier of a specific skill is unlocked also results in wasting points to skills you don't want... By the time you get all the skill slots and the skills you want, there's very little thing left to do in it's massive world. Pretty much the time to stop playing the game when you get your end game build... Would have been nice to have a NEW GAME PLUS...
    - The massive world becomes barren once you have completed all points of interest.
    - Almost all of Ciri's quests is about running away from fights with infinite spawning enemies.
    - Missing characters that were supposedly affected by decisions you made in the witcher 2.
    - Ignite/extinguish candles.....

Despite the game being subpar in essential areas like controls and combat, it is playable. If you have followed Geralt's adventure from the first or even the 2nd title, it'd be a shame to pass up on his last one...

The Witcher 3 is a tough one to score, because what this game offers, goes to the both ends of the spectrum of the good and the bad.

The game is obviously a masterpiece in regards to its story-telling, characters (except Yennefer and Triss, which follow their patterns from the books, which means they're both terribly written) and the world. Yes, the main story is the most terrible in all three games, but the story background, world politics, down to the perils of a peasant are so wonderfully unique (compared to boring shovelware the rest of video game market offers - itself, when put outside the lows of video game standards, it serves pretty mediocre allegories and metaphors to the real world problems) and well presented, it won't let you go off your PC.

Well, it wouldn't, if not the terrible, awful, shollow, console-centric mess of the gameplay. Following the worst traditions of the Witcher 2 model, once again we control a drunk hobo, who is sliding on the grasslands and needs 0,5-1 second to react to our inputs. Jesus Merciful. And if that wouldn't be enough, once again we're treaded with the awful, just awfully dreadful auto-aim, that makes not only the limited interactions with the world abysmal (it all goes down to looting random chests in dumpsters, where mysteriously an epic formulas and piles of silverware are being stashed), but the combat as well. It's once again a tiring chore, you don't have a great deal of control over. Solution? Well, damned rolls of course, to put yourself on a safe distance and once again ace this game with the Igni sign. The absolute mess of controls and handling the gameplay make a poor character development system even more pointless and abysmal, since you really don't want to rely on parrying, deflecting arrows or other fancy, useless skills. I would say that the character system in this game is even worse that in the previous one, even more chunk of the available skills are random % bonuses or a must-have mind trick skill to one of your signs (that lets you to finish some quests faster with a better outcome).
To make matters even worse, despite having stunning visuals (even after the DowngradeGate), impressive overall narrative and loads of story content, the relations between player character and the world itself feel non-existant. It's because there are none possible. You can't even talk with NPCs whenever you would like, there's no real background to discover other than scripted cut-scenes if you decide to pick up a quest, etc. You're sorrounded by dead people, that will sometimes go nuts if you pick up someone's item in the public (there's no real thievery system, but at least this time the devs implemented the most basic reaction to our actions).

It's a really pretty tale to enjoy, accompanied by the really awful and cringe-worthy gameplay and absolutely shollow rules of how this game works.

Witcher 3 was long awaited and got great reviews, so I also gave it a try.

The graphics are good, but the setting lacks variety. The combat system is average. I like the pace of the combats, but most of the time you spam the same skills and the controls are quite squishy. The character system is bad and you do not even have the chance to create your own character. Is this even a RPG?

Everybody is forced to play this witcher guy, who is already known to be totally skilled. Where is the motivation, when you already start out as a jack of all trades who is known to beat everyone in everything?
The story never really caught my interest and got hilarious at times, for instance when you had to fight a demon fetus... seriously? A demon fetus?! I don't like this kind of humor (if it was meant to be a joke) in games. Also the constant spamming of these witcher senses in every single quest made most of it just boring.
All in all, it is a solid game, which fans of the witcher series should definitely play.

An impressive game with a probably too many technical issues and design problems to really surpass The Witcher 2 as far as overall quality, especially from a gameplay standpoint. Still worth playing, but probably only if you are coming for the story, the combat and game systems here just aren't up to the task.

Starting off with the game's strong points:
The environment detail both in visual fidelity, effects, size and density is impressive to say the least.
The voice acting is generally top notch and there is quite a lot of it.
The side quests tend to be pretty compelling and avoid the usual traps of simplistic "fetch this" and "kill that" design.
The character skills and build options are a nice new addition, although arguably unnecessary due to the pretty shallow difficulty.
Enemy design and abilities can be interesting.

Unfortunately the core mechanics of the gameplay really let down the game overall:
Combat animations, timing, interrupts, collision detection and hit detection are all really loose and inaccurate, this is not a tightly wound combat system.
The controls in general aren't great moving around the environment, collision detection and button assignments and universally awful.
The horse is awful, it gets stuck, glitches, animates poorly and has horrible controls and collision detection. Combat on horse back is a total farce.
The loot system scales loot, but not enemy levels, so this leaves you with a very unrewarding loot system and gear progression that heavily favors crafting and leaves you with very little, or in fact no found gear that is really very compelling.
Enemies don't scale levels at all, so doing low level quests later in the game leaves all your foes falling in a single hit, on the other than it really just serves to limit you from taking on higher level quests at your discretion, for no particular reason.
Enemy AI is generally quite poor, they get stuck on objects, fail to be able to hit you when you stand next to them in certain positions, fail to move at all on occasion, attack and block at random intervals, regardless of difficulty.
Difficulty scales only enemy health and damage, not skills, timing, attack patters, dodging or aggressiveness.
It's a level based game, so having difficulty that only scales health and damage just level caps your questing, which actually makes the game less enjoyable.
Not to mention and inordinately long list of technical issues from crashing, animation issues, visual rendering issues and so on.

Most of these issues actually were not present in Witcher 2 and likely a bi product of being an open world adventure this time around. Here, you are clearly sacrificing the tight controls, combat and leveling structure for the sake of having an open world experience, albeit a very nice looking one. I feel as though the game would probably have been better served in a more linear format, as that wasn't a particular problem in the previous title, and the trade-offs here really undermine the game overall.

It's not a bad game, if they balanced some of the underlying leveling and loot systems by scaling enemies and not scaling gear, tighten up the controls, contact animations and collision detection it would really be a 9/10 or better game. In it's current state, you really are just playing this one for the story.

I would wait for the Enhanced Edition, much as you should have done for The Witcher 2. The hype train is real with this one, although the story is great and the visuals are compelling, there are so many mechanical pitfalls and technical problems here it really is a bummer.

7/10, Enchanced Edition, probably an easy 9/10.

The Witcher 3 is a beautiful game let down by a painful combat system and lazy quest design.

    THE PROS:
-The Witcher 3 is a work of art

-Graphics. It needs to be said that not only is this game is GORGEOUS, but it easily runs at +60fps.

-Beautiful soundtrack, definitely one of the best game OSTs of recent years. From heart pounding combat music to haunting exploration music.

-Well written story. Your hunt for Ciri is believable and well written thrusting Geralt into a series of smaller and ultimately interconnecting storylines.

-Believable (and more importantly memorable) characters. The characters you interact with have their own personality and motivations, some you'll love and some you'll hate.

    THE CONS:
-Keyboard controls are awful. Feels like controlling a JCB riding a tank. Use a controller.

-Menus are clunky as hell. Heaps of wasted screen real estate here with a 3D model of Geralt and his currently equipped items taking up over half of the screen whilst your inventory items. Your actual inventory items however (I'm looking at you potions and decoctions menu) are relegated to a tiny area forcing you to either memorize the icons or rely on the tooltip (which more often than not fails to show.)

Enemy Upscaling. This optional feature works great for the run of the mill cannon fodder enemies but some of the enemies just scale like crap, I'm looking to you Djinn!

-Combat. Really, really repetitive. Every single fight feels exactly the same as the previous, occasionally you might get the excitement of using a different Sign or Oil. The last boss is the prime example of this, he fights just like one of the hundreds of bandits you've killed.

-Exploration. Yes the world is big. Yes the world is beautiful, but exploring it feels unrewarding when it's as empty as this, there ARE “hidden” things but if you get within half a mile of them the game effectively shouts “There's a hidden thing here!!” and marks it on your map.

-Pacing, at least if you're doing any side missions. By the time I'd cleared Velen and Novigrad this game just dragged for me.

-Novigrad. It's pretty and it LOOKS like a city however it's all a facade. You could count the accessible building in Novigrad without taking your socks off, in the crowds of random citizens you'll inevitably find several sets of quadruplets, the random citizens also have all the life and brains of cockroaches (they might run away if there's a fight near them... Maybe).

-Skellige. I nearly hung up my controller and uninstalled here. I'd thought Skillige would be a rough and hard land surrounded by rough seas.. Nope, flat and clear Mediterranean waters that you have to traverse on a slow as **** boat.

-Side Quests. Even though I didn't wind up doing too many of them after Novigrad. You can dress them up with voice acting or put in a "follow the red stuff" Witcher sense bit but in the end fetch/kill quests are still fetch/kill quests and are nothing more than padding.

-GPS. Why? Why do we have a GPS!?

-Triss Merigold. Actually any of the games redheads. Apparently the “Bozo the Clown” gene is rampant in The Witcher 3.

Every part of the world has something to entertain you with. You can find something regulair as a monster nest to a big and interesting side quest (clearing out the monster nests is not that bad as it may sound btw).

    Gameplay:
All the fights are interesting to have and as you are upgrading they will get more variable.
The upgrade system is good structured. From the very beginning of the game you will have to chose which signs, battle style, etc. you want to use. As you come to the end of the main storyline, you will then already be able to have very different parts of skills upgraded.
The game can be very difficult if you want it to be it. But if you are only interested in the story’s, then you can change it to the storyline difficulty.

    Story’s:
Those are great in the Witcher 3. All of them. As in the main story as in the side quests. For example of a side quest, you will be overthrowing the king and investigating the attack on the feast. Oh and don’t forget about the main DLC’s story’s, they are great, as great or almost on the same level as the main storyline for sure.

    Extra:
There are a few more interesting activity’s such as horse racing or fist fight or gwent (a card game in the Witcher’s world).
I know that not all of you find reading as interesting as the activity’s listed above, but reading in this game will learn you more about the world of Witcher.
There is also the bestiary where you can read new information about the creatures and the persons you have met earlier.

As concluding I will give this game the 10/10, it is my favourite one!

Avoiding spoilers I will tell you that as of the latest patch (can't say about earlier versions) a quest that is REQUIRED to get one of the endings is unfinishable. And if it was a secondary quest, I'd forgive, nearly every major secondary quesline in Skyrim had game-breaking bugs on release. But this is the main story we're talking about. And while I'm sure this will be rectified with a patch soon, gamers and critics need to stop ignoring such problems on games that they rate 10 out of 10. Mind you, the game was an easy 8 or 9 otherwise. Expand

I would have persisted through this game, since I've played much worse games, but nothing in the gameplay, story or progression is compelling enough to continue.

First the story: the characters are boring, quests grinding and story lacks direction or focus. Character interaction is a neverending parade of inane characters and plastic-flat conversations.

The gameplay is also clumsy and frustrating, with most battles consisting of constant roll-spamming and button mashing -- Batman game this is not. Strategy in the game amounts to simply save scumming so that you have prescient understanding of the next encounter that will happen in the game.

I simply cannot understand how this game is this highly rated. It is worse than Alpha Protocol. Maybe everyone is distracted by the hilariously bad polygon breasts and awkward sex scenes? Note: I haven't got to those scenes, nor will I, since I stopped playing this game. I've only seen them on youtube and they are childish.

    "This game will be great".
Having played both predecessors i had quite high expectations from the third (and last?) Witcher game. And the game started just right. When you first launch Witcher 3 and hear the menu music, the song called "Geralt of Rivia" it simply blows you away - it's bombastic, doesn't fall short of epicness - it gets you right into the mood for an epic RPG adventure.

Sadly, the level of enthusiasm you get from hearing this music for the first time will be also the highest you're going to reach playing Witcher 3. Everything that comes after clicking on New Game will be less bombastic, less genius than this great song (get the soundtrack guys).

First, i want to start by saying something about the games world. Its an open world and I'm sick and tired of it. Many claim that an open world offers gamers great freedom within the world. You can do literally anything, visit many places, find own adventures and explore at your will. But what if this world is somewhat empty, lacking of genuine and interesting content. No caves to explore, no crypts to unveil, no dark secrets to be found outside of the main quests. This open world then becomes a sandbox full of nothingness. Yes there are forests, lakes and seas with wildlife and to some degree some events in Witcher 3. But I missed something beyond that. something not so superficial. Maybe dangerous caves with dark monster that fit into the apocalyptic Witcher universe (succubus, more ghosts, cursed demons?). Sadly, in most games an open world does not offer such depth and Witcher 3 makes no difference.

Moreover, moving around in this world has its own problems.
The controls of Witcher 3 are "wonky". I don't know if they deliberately decided to make Geralt turn and react like a snail, but hey they did and i cant get into it. I know many people don't have this problem with W3 but for me, after having played many titles with perfectly precise and responsive controls (Dark Souls, Skyrim and especially Witcher 2) this is a really big problem. I'm getting killed so often on the lowest difficulty because i fail to adapt to Geralts slow reaction and the time it takes him to do anything. It also is annoying as hell and made me quit the game more often than i should quit a AAA title. Yes I quit Dark Souls quite often because of its difficulty. But when I quit Witcher, it's because of the heavy disappointment i get for not being able to defend myself from the enemies (or the games controls yeez).

Lastly, i dislike some of the changes the devs have made with the character and inventory system.
The new alchemy/potion system is, besides being completely useless because of food healing you way more than a swallow does, really uninteresting. I spent many hours in Witcher 1 farming herbs for the potions and then felt really good about being prepared, in Witcher 2 this was somewhat reduced but still very enjoyable. In Witcher 3 you craft something once, and then forget about it. You can literally craft anything during the first game chapter and then the alchemy system is done for besides from mixing mutagens, which is far less exciting then it may sound.
The skill progression, at first being very confusing, also does next to nothing to your character progression. There a some few skills such as reflecting arrows or regenerating health during daytime and stamina during night which are very useful but the rest is just minor improvements (5% to potion duration, 5% to damage, etc). Really boring. Compare this with the game changing skill system Witcher 1 where choosing a good skill-set was necessary to survive the game.

I believe Witcher 3 is a great game for most people. But being bound to a mostly boring world and rooted by bad controls I cant find greatness within. I cant see how this is an improvement over Witcher 2.
So sadly my final score is a 6/10 after having spent many many hours being mostly bored.

EDIT: I wanted to add something - guys comparing this [not bad] game to Planescape: Torment or Fallout series are lying. This is not a similar game. ("Can't touch this!")

Witcher 3, while fun in the beginning, after 50 hours got tedious on me because of the grind/chore in a MMO-ish kind of way. I'll explain now. The bad: - Too many dull sidequests! The damsel in distress (Ciri)

The bad:

    - Too many dull sidequests! The damsel in distress (Ciri) will have to wait a couple of months because you want to level up (to prepare for the future fights, of course!), for this you do zilions of dull fetch/kill side quests. There are just too many of them. IMHO only main story quests are very good. Like finding Anna for the baron, brilliant. So, IMHO side quests are too many and 90% are boring.
    - After several fights (after like 15 minutes of fighting) you need to visit a blacksmith to repair swords. Some would call this fun. Like weapon/armor buff that is good for 15 minutes, really?
    - Collecting herbs and loot from bodies is a grind. This is because you need to "aim" VERY carefully to collect it. Also, herbs are too many in number and kind, is it a gardening simulator?
    - Collecting loot from containers is a grind! I can't believe I am saying this! But there are COUNTLESS sacks and crates and chests everywhere which you need to pick. I would have the number of sacks and chests 100 times less (yes!), but with more coins and stuff in them. Who wants to open 100 chests with a couple of coins and a trash item like cowmilk or a mug inside? Chests should be more rewarding. Gimme just one chest per map but with 1000 coins! Make it difficult to take. Also it is not very logical to have countless chests in the world, with stuff, waiting for you! So, in short, how can it be fun, if almost every room may have like 15 sacks and crates, with trash items, and you need to carefully aim to loot each of them?
    - Controls are unnerving. For example, in menues like shopping you have to press different action buttons for some weird reason. Sometimes it is E, sometimes it is Space. Really?! So before you press a button, you need to check it if it is the right one. Many times I sold items which I did not want to sell - Ok another reload (BTW, too long for an SSD based system). More? Gerald would not always run when I want him to. Recieve a blow in the back, slow Sir! Better not run from your enemy next time Sir! Dodge-hit-dodge-hit-Quen repeat X times.
    - Weird logic in many cases. For example, you may find the diagram for lesser rune stone quite late in the game. How come Level 1 weapons have slots for rune stones? Ok you may get a few ready, without crafting, but they will be good for 30 minutes of playing because rune stones cannot be removed from weapons (they would get lost in the process). How 'bout eating chicken during the fight? Whitchersence - if you are smart and came where you should but had not examined an earlier mandatory red color track/body, you'll have to go back. Why is it always howling? I mean the constant wind force of windguru 3 star rating should be a joy to windsurfing inhabitants :)

    Still, the good:

Graphics, animation, speech (Irish like?) are nice and fun for me. Just see how Gerald jumps off his horse while it's still running! Or look at the fish playing near the lifted bridge - you feel the urge to go spearfishing! Or just look at that she-godling in Novigrad... What a waste of the brilliant work by the technical guys!

    My verdict:
So, in spite of a lot of good things in the game my score is 5/10 because great games are all about fun, not chore, and this one has more chore than fun. Witcher 1 and 2 are better games in my opinion because they are more dynamic and fun! As a reference of my tastes for RPGs, I liked Fallout 1 and 2 (and New Vegas), Gothic 1 and 2, Planescape: Torment, and Jagged Alliance 2.

Game of the generation, at least up until now. Won't be easy to surpass this. It is a great rpg, with stellar production values, a great open world to explore, a phenomenal story and lore, sidequest that don't fill like mmorpg filler busywork. It is a very, very long game, but you won't get bored. Combat is quite fun. All in all, an example of what fantasy rpgs should be.

    so, why is it bad?

simple, what is the great world good for, if you only hit fast attacks, hard attacks and a roll every time...the fights NEVER change...you also dont get any xp for fights...they implemented a bestarium, but you don´t improve against a specific enemy if you fight him more often...
there is no real skill tree...even shooter like borderlands offer more in their skill trees.
So basicly, every fight from lvl1 to the end, is exactly the same...

also, they showed us extrem graphics! but the final game didn´t really look like that...especially the fire and the smoke don´t like any good.

the bar in the first town is the exact same as in the 2nd town...

there are a lot of bugs...

so, the witcher is a huge world with a lot of things, but the gameplay is just boring and never changes...and yes, i know there are "spells" but...in a RPG i excpect A LOT more from spells...

The gameplay is not perfect and parcour especially feels a little bit clunky in the beginning but imo, it is still 10 times better than what red dead or gta offers....so yeah, deal with it, the game is worth it ;) And trust me, combat gets interesting once you've mastered all the options at your disposal and turned the difficulty to hard. I personally appreciate how enemy level scaling is done. I really hate it in so many other games when every time you level up, basic enemy also get stronger. What the point then if you don't feel more powerful? In conclusion, the witcher 3 is definitely one of the best game of last Gen. I really hope the devs recover from cyberpunk somehow and come back with a new rpg based on sapkowski's universe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story is good as always in Witcher series games. It was always a reason to play this game and it was a reason why I play such kind of RPG - the one you cant's create customized character to play. The Witcher is, was and will be the ONLY exception for me. But it doesn't mean it doesn't frustrate me. As I said, the story is good, I even decided to read the books at last. But that's all. Technically the game is awful. **** performance, no optimization at all, clones everywhere, bugs and unresponsive controls. Ok, I can live with all that, I finished the game after all. But no RPG is what kills it. Primitive skill and upgrades system that doesn't feel rewarding. But the worst thing is forced actions, decisions, story. The first sign that should have convinced me not to trust any illusion of choice was as far as in the beginning of Witcher 2, where I found Geralt in one bed with Triss despite ignoring her in the first game. Ok, I thought I'll just ignore it further and everything will be fixed. Nope. In Witcher 3 Geralt was immediately accused of cheating Yen with Triss. What a joke. And Triss even behaves as I didn't say her to **** off in the second game. Then we don't even have an option to romance Ciri. Why? Because Geralt "feels like her father". What a nonsense, this game calls itself an RPG, there shouldn't be any "Geralt feels", but only what player feels and chooses! Nope, the story rails are still stronger than you, like in some low-budget shooter. There are actually choices that affect ending, but other than that, throughout this huge game you can only affect minor insignificant outcomes. For example, you can't prevent Vesemir's death no matter how many allies you gather. The results are always the same. I could go on and on. But that's enough, too many PR and fanboys around this game for people to be rational. I finished it and I don't feel like I've wasted my time, but I'm still disappointed. Expand

Looks great. Feels great. And what comes to The Witcher stories, is good, just like its predecessors. But when looking from RPG standpoint alone and not bothering to concentrate on just graphics... it's nothing magnificent - good enough to entertain until the end of the game, but nothing truly memorable like Planescape: Torment and such epic goodies.
