    In almost every aspect The Outer Worlds 2 is an improvement over its predecessor. However, been the rather bland and dare I say boring main quest, combined with the fact this game offers very little new to the genre by way of mechanics. It would be hard to say that The Outer Worlds 2 is anything more than a good, yet uninspired RPG. One that is harder to recommend given the stiff competition in the RPG genre and sub-genres here in 2025.

    Obsidian has run out of steam when it comes to storytelling, once again delivering a distinctly flat world within The Outer Worlds universe and prioritizing form over substance. Fortunately, the polished gameplay allows you to enjoy the sequel.

    The simple fact is, if you played the first game, you know exactly what you’re getting with The Outer Worlds 2. There are some mechanical improvements, but the story doesn’t impress, and the side-quests lack enough bite or consequence to create a world I want to spend more time in.

    The Outer Worlds 2 is okay, and perhaps that is its biggest flaw – it is unable to match either its powerful rivals or New Vegas, to which it is merely derivative and doesn't make up for it with its storyline or companions. In a year packed with excellent games, it's hard to justify buying it when there are so many great, cheaper RPGs out there.

    The Outer Worlds 2 is a damn good, classic role-playing game in which you can pretty much do whatever you want...At the same time, I have to admit that I found it to be quite formulaic for long stretches. Factions, conflicts, open character development with numerous gameplay options: none of this is new, and because every distribution of perks, weaknesses and abilities always leads to a certain goal, proceedings feel somewhat arbitrary and lacking a certain special spark.

    After waiting six years for another crack at The Outer Worlds, it feels disappointing to be met with a sequel that is so promising but marred by a poor first half and frustrating Flaws. But the game isn’t a total flop, saved by its whimsical charm, vivid dystopian subject matter, and the classic, slower, and more explorative design that Obsidian games have perfected.

    As a sequel, The Outer Worlds 2 doesn't strive to reinvent its past foundation and does little to stand out in the RPG genre. If you're looking for new toys to play with, you'll find plenty of weapons and a much-improved gunplay to boot. Just don't expect to carry many memories of your time in Arcadia with you.

    The first The Outer Worlds left us with mixed feelings a few years ago: it had an interesting premise and fun combat, but all in all, it didn't lead to a very memorable experience. The Outer Worlds 2 is clearly a step forward: the combat has been greatly improved and there is more to experience. So what do you get up to? Well, you create a character and walk around with them on different planets. You solve one problem after another by talking and/or shooting. That doesn't sound very original, and it isn't. All in all, we find The Outer Worlds 2 an improvement on its predecessor and, at times, an enjoyable game, but it's certainly not a must-have.

    The Outer Worlds 2 delivers a rich, expansive RPG with deep characters, meaningful choices, and a finely crafted sci-fi world. Obsidian balances humor, seriousness, and exploration to create one of their most polished and engaging titles yet. [Recommended]

    The Outer Worlds 2 promises flexibility in storytelling, but when that flexibility comes from interacting with one-dimensional characters who inhabit such an unconvincing world, there isn’t much of a point to it.

    The Outer Worlds 2 is defined by its whiplash, alternating between deeply rewarding storytelling and outcomes that feel rushed and stilted. I largely enjoyed the time I spent (mostly) making Arcadia a better place; it’s just disappointing to see such strong potential in the opening hours that doesn't show up again. There's a middle ground between the first game's brevity and the sequel's overly ambitious nature, and I hope Obsidian gets the chance to find it in a third game.
  4. While you can tinker with gear or unlock lockboxes, there aren’t any activities that can set up camp chats or even instances of companions getting up to interesting stuff you can join in on. Far from a dealbreaker, but something that would have been cool. Then again, they’re probably just avoiding listening to me moan about the locking of extra weapon quick-switch holster and healing primer slots to gear mods. It's a bit of a ballache, especially given the limited slots most gear has in comparison to the number of tweaks you can install. Sure, it forces you to pick and choose rather than equipping everything and achieving instant godhood, hand in hand with the levelling system, but is standing in the way of me adding a melee swatter to my regular rotation of normal gun/energy gun unless I ditch a more interesting ability really contributing much to the roleplaying?
