Doesn't keep old good "Resident Evil" mechanics, but against that fact, bringing whole new horror atmosphere, with it's really great details and movie style!..

"The Evil Within" is maybe more out of gaming part, than first "Resident" games, but by that it's positive.

Really needs optimization. I get a constant 30fps until the game decides to go down to 0fps every 4 minutes. The id tech 5 engine really sucks, I hope that they are going to patch this game.

This game is far more demanding because it has few graphics settings i can lower and even on 720p it gets choppy. Since I am well within the minimum specs required I expected not to have this kind of problem. Seems to be a case of bad porting to me. Expand

But the framerate keeps dropping all the time. And the texture pop-ins are still there. Ugh. Sadly, the PS4 version is much better and more stable.

The story is rather interesting. The characters are totally bland and the game already starts with you knee-deep in the **** after only two minutes of intro. The pacing is kinda poor to me, but the plot is so bizarre that it's probably what will keep you going.

Now, for the gameplay... ugh. The least I say, the better. I know this is supposed to be hard. I know this is supposed to be challenging. But it ends up just being... frustrating. The open combat sections suck. That enemy that throws dynamite at you sucks. And I wouldn't have that much of a problem with all the stealth if the controls and the camera weren't so bad. At the third chapter I just though "screw it", then lowered the difficulty and started shooting instead of trying to sneak my way over the place.

So... The Evil Within. Not a bad game at all. It even was really fun, at least when I was not engaged in combat. The enemies are really creative, and, although the game is not really scary, it's very disturbing. If you want a challenge, are a fan of Resident Evil and love to try a section of a game again, and again, and again, well, then go ahead. I do not regret buying it, but I could've just watched a complete walkthrough on Youtube and save me the frustration with the clunky gameplay.

You can unlock the FPS via the console. The black bars due to the native resolution at best add to the atmosphere of a B’Movie. The game looks good, has great atmosphere, solid gameplay and a very nice variety of enemies. Those are the main pros of the game. But the plot of the game is so damn confusing. It's as if the writers weren't even sure themselves, what was going on, and the vague explanations for what is actually going on in the game, isn't revealed until about 7-9 hours into the game. And that is simply way too long to tell the players what is going on. It's not like I want the plot served on a silver platter or anything, but the story was all over the place, making no sense for the majority of the game.

Furthermore, the cast of characters is overall very forgettable, and the protagonist features some truly horrible emotionless voice acting at times. It is extremely rare that he actually reacts somewhat like a human being to what goes on around him. I mean, if i were chased down by a creepy giant girl-monster, covered in blood, with long floaty hair and long sharp fingernails, that she's trying to dig into my flesh, and I just barely escape, I wouldn't say a reaction somewhat like **** that was pretty close." is a valid response to that situation. And that kind of bland boring voice acting sticks around for the entire game.
This is truly a shame, since it makes it extremely hard to connect to the main character.

Overall, this game was a let down for me, but i don't regret playing it. Although I didn't like it overall, i would still recommend people that like the genre to play it and give it a chance. I simply warn you not to expect the great game that was promised, and not to expect a coherent meaningful story, but rather a cool mess with a bad premise.

The game is a disappointment it really is...... I've been looking forward too this game since it was first announced however after playing the game doesn't seem finished it seems like it was shipped early about 85% complete : The game play would be fun if it wasn't so buggy the biggest problem i'm having is the frame rate is absolute murder it constantly goes up and down on a ridiculous level to the point where sometimes it becomes completely unplayable. The enemy ai behaves really badly. Some situations where it should be nerve racking terrifying and difficult are in fact laughably easy due to the enemy a.i. behaving such as running into walls i have only gotten to chapter five but the last boss Laura i think her name was behaved so stupidly that i could literally walk around at ease without any threat whatsoever.
The voice acting is bad and when i say bad where i think they just used where the voice actors read the script in completely neutral and decided to use them like that i honestly didn't believe until i played and tried it i literally laughed because it was so out of place in the environment. The graphics are fine they don't have any problem for me the story seemed like it would be decent too if i could actually play the game and get to it i'm at the point where i thought it seemed like such a complete and total waste of my time i'm extremely unhappy with the product. Maybe get the game in awhile when its much cheaper but as it stands now do not get this game for its price it seems like it would be a great game if nor for the performance issues and bad a.i.

I only have 30 minutes in, so I suppose I should give it more time, but wow is it hard to do so. Crashed immediately after starting it, terrible frame rate, poor graphic filter and more are the least of the problems, sadly. Its just a poor experience. Its a trial and error game, where immersion is broken constantly by the completely illogical progression method.

    Sadly, this isn't scary.

If you are looking to run this game at 60fps (Vsync required?) 1080P then good luck. I do not care what machine you have. As a rule of thumb, when a developer or publisher put insane PC requirements out that means they have done little to no testing and do not want people to say they can not play on the recommended specs. As of this review you can remove the bars that take up a portion of your monitor (at a lose of FPS) and I believe SLI is still not supported which is baffling if I am correct.

The graphic options are pathetic and have little to no impact on your performance, its the resolution. This game simply hates 1080p and you might have to find some slightly lower resolution. This is just unacceptable and its really a crime given how this game is really great if it runs well.

I can not speak of keyboard controls, but the controller works fine.

As for the game itself you will find yourself in a completely insane world. Certain bosses are truly terrifying and will kill you often. The game is thick with atmosphere and at times certain enemies give you a dark souls feeling given how large they are. The safe zone is particularly interesting in this game and I do not want to spoil anything. The game is very gory and weapons do visceral damage. Oddly death animations are non existent save for special enemies, you kind of just drop dead. (Chainsaw death though!)

The game has an interesting fire mechanic and the gunplay is solid. The upgrade system is nothing special. Overall despite what some may claim this is survival horror. Yes you have guns and ammo. You will be shooting a lot, but usually if you have a ton of ammo there will be a large horde and its empty in no time if you do not use fire well. Don't expect to leon karate these guys, bare hands do not work well against horrific monsters.

This game is best summed up as one reviewer put it as the resident evil 5 we never got. He went on to say but its too many years late and new mechanics are needed. I have to say while I agree with the upgrade system the mechanics were fine. Boss battles are genuinely terrifying and you will find yourself running trying to figure out how to kill something that warps away from bullets.

Im not sure if its a translation issue or what but the writing is god awful. Your characters, possibly in a situation where 90% of people would upon finding a gun blow their brains out seem to not care about anything. Your partner tries to kill himself and you tackle him, take the gun and go "What the **** man" then walk off. "Im a police officer, maybe I should help you?" Your characters animations to see a room completely changing are realistic but the dialogue is just painful. "Lets find the exit" after left has become right, down up, red to blue.

I love this game but I also hate it. I can't put it down but my god is it infuriating how no effort was put into this PC port. I can't imagine playing this before the black bars were removed and the 30 fps cap was lifted. And to the idiot reviewers who act like PC gamers need to get over 30fps because its not a twitch game....
Yea the giant monster I have to run out of the way from, the bomb I have to make a needle land on the small green spot. Or the man with the gigantic chainsaw coming for me. No problem, give me half the information I like watching my guy get impaled by a chainsaw at 30fps. Its so cinematic. Popcorn anyone?

It has an FOV slider, an option to speed up the character and other options that fix a lot of what's wrong with the game. It does not fix all the egregious lens flare and jarring visual effects nor the obnoxious camera bob but an FOV of 95 makes it not so bad. As a side note the major perpetrators of mkultra trauma based mind control are the judaeo-masons-marxists, this is an occult doctrine that was actually documented in one of the black magic grimoires of the middle ages attributed to Solomon, I think it's the clavicle or lesser key in the preface, it's just that the tech/pharmatech has really aided its effectiveness. The Japanese were very effected by the Springmeier books in the early 90's that documented all this, among others and this is primarily what their horror games are about. At bottom this is a kabbalistic satanic system that is used to bring in an atheist world communist dictatorship over the slave goyim with a directing elite of jewish talmudics and their worldly antichrist. That's really the story of this world before apocalypse, make sure you're on the right side there btw. You can see this in a hidden form in the stylized masonic symbol all over the place in the game, which is a hidden black magic hexagram of hermeticism and kabbalism.
    -----------------------

Got back into this after playing it a few years ago on PC. I can't remember if I had problems with the NON-steam version or not but this steam version I've had no problems with getting 60fps with med/high settings and no/low AA. When the action is high it goes down though pretty bad in some places like when their is fog etc. My largest complaint as far as video options is the over aggressive lense flair and terribly balanced lighting along with the really weird camera bobbing and angles. The seeing double effect and other effects are really horrible too. All that combined with the jarring overly abundant cutscenes and taking control away from the player. In short this game gives me a headache to play too long. It's like being on a bobbing ship with a bunch of lights shining right at you in the fog, ugh. I couldn't tell you much about the story, forgettable like the sequels is. I can tell you a large part of it is simply MKultra/monarch occult, trauma based mind control based or the deliberate shattering of a personality and putting it back together with alters that are trained for various tasks. This used to be called multiple personality disorder but it's called DID now. This is deliberately done by the militaries of all countries, by the elite dynastic families and by various other cults and orgs. Hollywood has many of these that are famous. People whose specific memories can be locked away are very useful for political, military and other kinds of crimes for the occult underworlds new order. The shock chair for upgrading is an example of the type of tech they use as a part of all this. Trained killers like the seals, rangers, delta force etc and their counterparts in intelligence and other places, which can be given any command while under programming and they will carry them out. Politically these gun massacres are usually by these programmed multiples but are given a lot of help by unseen actors and the press/police as well. Disarming the American people is a major goal.

The controls are ok on a pad but the character is really clunky to move around and there is def too much lag especially when in combat. It's a hard game to enjoy really. The colors are atrocious as well, a muddy look almost all the time with muted other colors make it not very appealing visually. Graphics are ok but are def dated. I'd say if it's cheap give it a go it is a standard mix of RE4 and alan wake. I can see a bit of Silent Hill but it's too run and gun for that comparison really.

If you run out of ammo (Which you will because its a survival game) then melee does about 5% damage. To make it worse zombies don't flinch 90% of the time when meleeing so you hit them and then instantly retaliate making melee basically useless. You would think a game where ammo doesn't grow on trees to be able to flinch a zombie so if 1 zombie is within your escape route you can knock them back and get round them.
The intro to the game (If you can call it that) was just terrible. I don't like a game to hold me hand and tell me everything through out the hole game but I also want a game to tell me how to play it. This game does not. You basically to work out everything and are thrown straight into the deep end. I didn't know what the controls were, whether to kill the zombie or to run away, to hide in the cupboard. No you have to work everything out after dying several times. Whilst your learning everything they decided to make you limp around at turtle pace just to increase your frustration even more. But minutes later you forget your leg was slashed and your completely fine again? Speaking of limping, another garbage idea is if your health drops below 30% you limp around aswell? I does recharge back up to 30% but still its annoying, I wouldn't mind it stopping you sprinting but slowing the player down to a crawl just gets annoying. I couldnt find a setting to turn off framelock so you have to play at 60 fps with vsync enabled. The game is still playable like this but would be nice to have uncapped without vsync. (This setting is set to 30fps at 1st and the mouse glitches out so use your keyboard to change this setting to 60 and the mouse will work fine)
This game does have good sides aswell thou. The graphics for its time are truly amazing. I wish the texture distance was a bit longer thou. Everything looks no where near as good when its further away. The guns feel good to use. I like the enemies they both look and are amazing. The maps are cool aswell. Overall the game is mostly fun to play through if you can look past the annoying parts. You can get this game on gamepass. I had to switch it over to Windows 7 compatibility mode which you can do by accessing the game files. There is tons of tutorials on how to do this on Google.

Overall having done one playthrough and saw the game to the end, I'd give the game a 6/10.

Now a 6/10 doesn't mean that I disliked the game, not at all, I did enjoy it but there were a few niggling issues which did get me frustrated time and again which I'll get to.

Firstly, the style of the game is great, the monster design is cool, the set pieces are lovely to look at even in 2022. For those who bought the game on release and were forced to play at 30fps Letterbox mode, you can now completely turn that off and by god does it make a difference; you'd never tell this game was made in 2014 by how it looks, at least on PC.

The protagonist is, well he's your standard brown hair, brown eyed American protagonist; although we do get some glimpses into his past as a detective and also his personal life which does give him some depth and it is delivered through passive storytelling rather than just simply having it explained to you.

The Director, if I recall correctly, is the guy who did the original Resident Evil and also Resident Evil 4, and if you've played RE4 before going into this, you will definitely feel it's influence bleed through; you could even debate that it's some kind of spiritual sequel to RE4 the way this game plays. However the story isn't as good as something like RE4, the Story is... I don't want to say forgettable but it certainly didn't leave a lasting impression upon completion.

It is a survival horror in the sense that ammunition isn't abundant, stealth killing and using traps to conserve ammo is a must and frankly you need to know when to fight and when to run; for me that's what made the game enjoyable, counting up your odds and making a decision.

The game itself also seems like the closest we'll get to a new Silent Hill with how some of the set pieces and monsters are, so if you, like me, are waiting to see if/when Konami decide to release something like that, The Evil Within is a good filler.

There are a few things however I did dislike and grew frustrated at.
Firstly, the insta-death mechanics. I don't mind an instant death, if anything I find them quite humorous at how I've been punished for what might seem like an obvious error; but there's just... Too many of them at certain places and there's times where there's too many in quick succession and unfortunately sometimes if you die, you're going back a little bit. It did get a little frustrating just being one-shot over and over again from a wire I clearly didn't trigger. Or random spikes just gutting from seemingly nowhere. Like I said, it's not bad to have one-shot mechanics, but when it's so sudden, so random and almost all the time in some chapters, it becomes less fun.

There are also times, now this might seem like an arbitrary criticism but it's something I couldn't help but notice, where something is about to happen, like a chase, in an in-game cutscene; then without warning, the camera is in a different place than you'd expect and you have full control of Sebastian again and before you can react (Because why would you expect to have to move during what you think is a cut-scene) you are dead. I got caught out by this almost every time and if you don't start moving the second you get control. Boom, instant death.

Overall, I did enjoy the game and was willing to overcome some of the little things that annoyed me, the game is not bad by any means and will likely hold your attention to the end, you can complete it anywhere between 8-12 hours I reckon, I got 11 for my playthrough. I wouldn't go back and play it again for my own fun, only if a friend wanted to see a playthrough. But it's definitely an enjoyable experience and a strong entry into the Survival Horror Genre.

It has its moments with some haunting visuals and brain-twisting segments but it tries to hard to be SOMETHING and ends up being a pain in the butt. The controls via keyboard and mouse are swishy and clumsy The UI in the menus has trouble between the mouse and keyboard for whatever reason and remaping is absolutely annoying. The gamepad controls are slightly better but the 3rd person character still wobbles and sways when you least need him to be. The weapon leveling system is simple but it takes to much goop to make anything worthwhile and there aren't any stats as to what weapons do in terms of power, etc. It's very sloppy UI-wise. There are only 4 quick keys and you can't use the mouse wheel to cycle through the weapons. That's the first I've ever heard or seen of that silliness. I had no issues with the graphics. Everything ran smoothly although the camera was really bad at times. The enemies are clever by lunging and running at you and dodging from time to time but blowing their heads off doesn't always stop them but lighting them with a match does. Go figure. The story may be the worst part overall. It's convoluted, nonsensical on goes on and on and on... It's just awful and very boring. The characters are one-dimensional and so is the laughable dialogue and mediocre voice-acting. It's not the worst of the horror-survival game out there but with so many other better titles, both 3rd and 1st person available I'd leave this for the cheapie sale to buy it. Expand

The Evil Within is not a terrible game, just a game constantly hampered by its own inability to flow and horror needs to flow in order to maintain its own pace because much like comedy, good horror is all about timing. Unfortunately, the Evil Within delivers its mail far too late. And then forces you to hang out inside the mail box with a boring cop.

Even without the technical problems the game has horrible voice acting, and a protagonist that you want to punch. He either doesnt talk or just makes sarcastic remarks and takes nothing seriously. This game also fails to make you feel like this world was ever alive, or to make you feel bad at all for what is happening. The beginning of the game you are basically driving through an empty city, no signs of destruction yet, just a bunch of parked cars and maintained streets with NO people. This game is also not scary, a few enemies look gross but thats it, it just throws blood in your face and calls it scary. The game tries to make the villain scary, or thinks that you will be scared of him, all he has to him is a huge scar down his pale face and all he does is make a pouting face and covers his eyes. Its almost laughable because the camera zooms in on him every time it shows him making an eerie sound effect. i mean if your scared of blood, just blood everywhere from walls to floors to entire pools than im sure you'll be scared of this game

The game has good gameplay and makes you want to search for ammo and other supply's and can be challenging at times and has some fun moments, i just cant take the world or story seriously, i mean even your character doesnt give a ****

Worst offenders gameplay wise are sections, starting in the middle part of the game, where the camera inverts the scene, your already imprecise controls are also inverted and any misstep means insta-death. Great, thanks and thanks for making me reload, change from save location to game, walk to this area, endure two cutscenes before retrying this annoying section, as there is no immediate checkpoint before...

Most of the game plays like a Resident Evil 4 / Resident Evil 1 / Silent Hill 1 Hybrid with slightly worse controls. I could deal with this, the old games were fun even with bad controls, but this game delivers nothing exciting, nothing new. It's seems more like a collection of deleted scenes from a various number of horror films and games. They just don't seem to fit together. Every chapter for itself is okay, but I always get the feeling I had already played or seen this before. Been there, done that. The game just seems uninspired, which is strange as the creator's previous work was bursting with creative ideas. And it does the modern horror thing of "how much blood, gore and other disgusting stuff can i put on the screen before i become a parody?". Also, the game has very few scary moments.

It does have some good moments, especially the chapter heavily borrowing from the cancelled "Resident Evil 4 - Hooked Man" demo version. Or the Silent Hill 2 like Boss fight a little earlier. However, picking up my earlier criticism, for every scene I can point to some game or film which did almost exactly the same, only better. Or more original.

All in all, neither deserving praise nor condemnation. If you like the genre, give it a try once it reaches 20 bucks or less and you find nothing more deserving for your money. Definitely not worth full price. 6/10 for gameplay, 4/10 for content.

Let's talk about these: both games are GREAT, especially Wolfenstein. And they are destroyed, only because of id Tech 5. Now you successfully ruined The Evil Within on the PC with that unusable game engine.

    My problems with it:

    - the games are horribly big for nothing
    - the system requirements are unreal for the graphics
    - speaking of unreal, UE 3 looks a million times better
    - games with id Tech 5 are nearly unplayable on AMD cards

So. I pre-ordered The Evil Within at first, than I looked at its requirements. They were pretty high, but since i don't believe these I checked the engine (yes, because of Bethesda as the publisher). As soon as I saw that it uses id Tech 5 I cancelled my pre-order, and I really hope a lot of people will ask for refunds for this catastrophe. The PC version is basically unplayable. Because of the technical issues I was not able to try the game. No matter what I set in the options it won't go higher that 15-17 FPS, as every id Tech 5 games. That makes the game pointless to play.

I know that my 60$ won't do any damage to a publisher like Bethesda, but I'm really happy that I downloaded this game from torrent. My 60$ is not burned this way.

First of all the game is unnecesary stretched. There are 15 chapters in the game and absolutely nothing important happens from chapter 2 to 8, they play like naruto fillers... there may be some interesting sequence once or twice but it could have been condensed in one or two chapters, not 7.

Chapter 1 is great for setting up the game and really hypes you but after that the game becomes generic third person number 999 with uninsteresting locales like: demolished castle, demolished asylum, demolished sewers and demolished etcetera,

Chapter 2 to 8 don't deserve any kind of review... really... I think for the first time in chapter 6 someone talks and asks the question they should have asked like 10 chapters ago: what's happening, where are we? etc... funnily enough no one answers.

Chapter 9 is excellent and it is what the whole game should have been, it has puzzles and great atmosphere, suspense and tension.

Chapters 10 to 15 are ok... although the ending is ridiculous and so so bad it is not even funny.

Biggest problem with the game is from the start you know **** is not happening because the story makes no sense and even after finishing it... it still makes no sense. We get glimpses of Castellano's family story through a diary but it doesn't have any kind of impact on the story and the things we learn about rubik are cool but experiments are not explained and we don't know who is working for who or why... it really feels like the game is incomplete lorewise and I'm sure they plan to milk people with DLC, lol.

Instant Death is horrible and sequences sometimes feel like Dragon's Lair... a tense situation quickly becomes boring and tedious and it really screws with the general atmosphere, you know something is wrong when instead of slowly opening doors you're kicking them open while charging with almost unlimited ammo shooting everything in the head.

Graphics are really good and character progression (through skills) feels good except for some useless skills like melee... but in the end this game is a mediocre third person shooter, not a survival, that will not scare anyone but children... and will not hold anyone's attention with its stupid lack of story.

It's like this people really forgot what makes a horror game great: suspense, tension and exploration.

Shinji retire... or make a whole new game like chapter 9.

If you look at the finer points of the level, enemy and overall gameplay design you will start to notice while this is a solid survival horror game, the overall design and execution is a little rough around the edges and becoming a little dated. Still an enjoyable game, but likely only if you already a fan of the genre.

On PC however, this is a really poor quality port. The framerate is locked to 30fps, aspect ratio and FOV are both locked and the framerate is both poor and inconsistent.
You can boost the framerate to 60fps by enabling the console, however this has various problems associated with it. Various environmental effects are noticeably still rendered at 30fps, you will get noticeable frame time and stuttering issues, as well the game struggles to stay above 60fps consistently even at only 1080p. Despite the use of a high end graphics card, you will still experience poor performance as the game underutilizes the GPU, as well it is has horribly unoptimized multi-threaded CPU performance to boot.
Altering the aspect ratio reduces the effective FOV and you cannot increase the FOV, leaving very little adjustment available here.
The Ultra Wide aspect ratio also will not display full screen on Ultra Wide displays, which is especially horrid as you end up with black bars on top and on the side of your screen.
The game also crashes infrequently throughout.

I would recommend this on PS4 or Xbox One, but the framerate drops away from 30fps quite often. So while on one hand I wouldn't recommend this game on PC, as a PC game, I would still recommend it over the console counterparts. Load times on the PC are significantly faster and you will be able to maintain a steady 30fps at a native 1080p with a reasonably powerful PC, just expect to have virtually no level of customization and essentially a console style experience from top to bottom.

As a survival horror game youre managing your health with pick ups.. your health will regenerate but only slightly.. and when your health is bwelow a certain point you move slowly and aren’t able to run…
But a bit like the game alone in the dark you have weapons here… as you progress the game youll get a pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle, a cross bow like weapon, there are grenades.. a great variety of weapons for survival and devent drop rate of ammo.. but just enough to keep you staying carful with what you use..
Unique from most survival horror games is that there is an assassins creed like stealth mechanic where you can take out most unaware enemies from behind..
you also have to stealth to disarm traps and get parts the craft cross bolts for your bow…
there are also jars of brain juice around the levels and off of enemies that act as a currency you use to upgrade your stats, buy ammo, and increase the stats of your weapons..
There are mirrors that take you back to the hospital this allows you to save the game as well, but the game will ocassionally autosave
The first half of the game I found to be really enjoyable and terrifying..
I was stressed in a good way and enemies put up a great challenge…
Missions were varied, I felt like I was in a movie..
And then halfway through the game it starts to fall apart..
The game goes from being scary to just frustrating..
Its becomes an anxiety fest of dealing with insta kill enemies, and recourse draining section after recouce draining section.. dealing with spongy bosses, having to thow switch after switch doing it multiple times in the same area to pregress further…
The games initial near perfect progression crumbles and stumbles to a crawl…
Made worse by this games awful checkpoint and autosave system…
The game wont constantly autosave once you find an important item…
And again there are cheap instakill enemies and moments in this game…
They are sometimes completely random, they’ll hit you and you have to go through the 10 minutes of recollecting supplies over and over and over until you get lucky enough to either get away or not activate this random spawn…
And also again… the 2nd half of this game is focused more on anxiety than it is horror..
its not fun replaying these anxiety filled moments
They aren’t even fun the first time…
And the games 2nd half is filled of these moments and trial and error chases with no indication of what you have to do, so you just keep doing it until you get it right with no checkpoints..
But still I pushed forward.. I was overlooking all of the bad because of the intriguing story going through this anxiety fest…
The game would freeze on my a couple of times causeing me to resatart it… no big deal, ill forgive it.. the first half was so good and im so close to this games end..
8 and a half hours into the game.. im on chapter 11 out of 15.. about 2 and a half to 3 hours away from this games credits.. and I run into a game breaking bug…
    That’s right… 3 years later… a Bethesda game (go figure) still has a game breaking bug…
I did play the ps3 version of this game and thought that’s clearly the problem.. so I went to google and no.. this chapter is full of game breaking bugs, more than just the one I ran into that wouldn’t let me progress the game..
I was an hr deep and nothing I did helped, shutting down the game, reloading checkpoints..
dying.. nothing… the game wouldn’t let me progress…
The only thing keeping me from just giving this game a 0 and walking away is that restarting the chapter could’ve probably let me continue.. but once more..
the 2nd half of this game is filled of anxiety, frustration and cheapness…
I wasn’t about to go through that hour and a half I just went through again..
Im walking away from what I thought was initially a great game that crumbled into a good game, but left me with the taste of a bad game…
    I give the Evil Within
    a very generous

    - the handgun/magnum is horrendously inaccurate
    - early encounter with Ruvik is nothing but nuisance
    - some portions where the game locks your camera at a certain angles can be very disorienting
    - very poor visibility in dark areas
    - extreme visual effects can make your eyes and head hurt in epileptic proportion
    - inconsistent damage from fire

A marriage between Resident evil and Silent Hill, with The Matrix as venue - an experiment gone wrong.

The game is peppered with cheap traps, cheap deaths, mediocre scares, levers and cranks, and distasteful visual effects that leave your head and eyes hurting.

The only horror to you'd face here is that curiosity got the better of you to pickup the game.

A truly fantastic video game, who's full potential is lost amongst a miasma of corporate-publisher bulls**t, extremely low quality testing and 'questionable' design decisions.

For every one thing this game does right, there are 10 things it did wrong. It's visually impressive with an amazing atmosphere, but it runs like crap. It can be set to 60FPS, but it's made immediately clear that it was never meant to do that, resulting in nasty screen tear and other visual issues. It's more than happy to crash on you and save points are few and far between for most of the game. A mild checkpoint system kicks in eventually, all too late I might add. The characters look good and have fine animations, but the dialogue between them is stiff and unnatural. Nobody tries to make sense of what's going on, even though they are suppose to be police detectives.

If you can get past the performance and character issues, then the Publisher issues kick in. It seems that this game was going to be much closer to Silent Hill and less like Resident Evil. This is demonstrated for most of the early game, I'd say at least the first 5 chapters. But I imagine Bethesda coming to Tango Gameworks and saying "A game that is not 90% combat is not going to sell, so put more combat in the game", because that's exactly what happened. From chapter 6 until the end of the game is a non-stop rollarcoaster of very, very bad combat sections. Suddenly it becomes obvious that the game wasn't built with combat in mind. Aiming a gun causes the camera to zoom in by a ridiculous amount, making aiming genuinely difficult in a game consisting mostly of tight and narrow levels. Melee is utterly useless, you've probably heard enough about that from others by now. Almost every boss in the game is a one-hit-kill to you if they get into range (I am not exaggerating, the bosses in this game are perhaps the worst bosses I've ever seen), and just like Resident Evil 6, they just keep coming back over and over again removing any sense of satisfaction from defeating them. To top this off, some of the weapons really get brokenly powerful if upgraded right. The Crossbow has bolts that can be upgraded to do 240% more damage per shot to enemies and cause them to catch fire, or stun every enemy in a room and leave them vulnerable to be stealth-killed (A single button) for up to 16 seconds. Yes, 16 seconds. This ammo can be manufactured by the player at will too. Please keep in mind, this is supposed to be a Survival Horror game, by a company well versed in this genre.

But enough about the combat, carrying on with the Publisher bulls**t, some of the most powerful equipment in the game is pre-order bonus only, such as Incendiary Bolts. While most of the bolts in the game need to be upgraded to be useful, the Incendiary Bolts are instant-kills against any enemies, including groups in range and are extremely powerful against most bosses in the game too. The story is never explained well either. This is something else I'm sure you've heard many people complaining about, such as the deeply unsatisfying ending, but it is true. Character's never discuss the important parts of the game, and the story as a whole is full of loopholes. It smacks of bad writing, until you realize that the story was left this way intentionally because it's going to be explained in the future DLC. That's right, they're pulling the EA Tactic, buy the game now and then pay more later for the privilege of being allowed to experience the full story.

    Summary:

If you really like character-action games in horror settings, like Resident Evil 4 or the Dead Space series, then stick with what you already have. This game is not the next big RE4. It will not deliver what you want.

If you love Survival Horror games then The Evil Within is sure to disappoint. From its mounted-turret sections to its QTE's to its one-shot-kill recurring boss fights... It is just too crippled from it's performance and design issues and is just not satisfying to complete. Nothing happens in the end to make the struggle worth while.

If you love Shinji Mikami, like I do, and want to follow his work then Resident Evil Remake has just been released in the form of a HD Remastered version. Pick that up instead.

    (EXTRA)

I can also confirm that not only is the game crash-happy on PC, but also on PS4 as well (I didn't even know a PS4 could blue-screen crash, but apparently it can).

In other news, I finally finished 2 of the 3 DLC packs for the game. The Assignment and The Consequence are quite a step up from the main game, they do more to explain the story and they are much shorter than the main game, which I feel is good. However they still suffer from many of the main games faults (Such as one-hit-kill bosses, single-use melee weapons, etc). I tried my best to play and finish the third DLC, The Executioner, but alas the game glitched out on me, spawned me in an empty black void and I was unable to proceed. I lack the motivation to try again.

A game with potential, marred by lack of polish.

Between the many flaws mentioned, the camera is truly abysmal. As a player, you will constantly fight against it, which is paradoxical, since camera placement is a foundation of stealth gaming.

It's a shame, because I liked the atmosphere.

Here we have a survival horror game that apparently also wants to be a 3rd person shooter, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing in it of itself, however unfortunately the scariest thing about it are not any of the monsters but rather the horrendously clunky controls, outdated graphics and gameplay mechanics.
Alright then then, it is rather unimpressive on a technical level and the controls aren't amazing, which again wouldn't be the end of the world, as there have been plenty of games with clunky or outright bad controls that have become genre defining because the story made up for it. Unfortunately the Evil Within is not one of those games. Instead the poor graphics and clunky controls are accompanied by writing that feels like they hired an elementary schooler, embarrassingly dull characters that fail to make you relate, much less care about them at every turn possible, twists that M. Night Shyamalan would roll his eyes at and last but not least game design straight out of 2001. The overarching plot can best be described as pseudo-intellectual pretentious garbage that has been done better a hundred times over. And it actually manages to get even more nonsensical with every twist.

Well to point out some good things the game has some creative visceral monster designs thrown in between the generic "definitely not zombies" and diverse similarly creative set-pieces. However it never manages to properly utilize any of them for the reasons stated above. Even the most creatively designed foe starts to become annoying rather than scary pretty quickly and even the most awe inspiring set-piece will make you sigh once you realize that you actually have to navigate through it.

If this game came out in the early 2000s it might have competed with the Resident Evil series but the standards for horror and survival game design have significantly increased since and what would have been good back then is simply unacceptable nowadays. Overall this game leaves the impression that someone set out to create a supercut of the early Resident Evil games, without thinking the whole thing through. It adopts pretty much all of their weaknesses without improving or adding anything new. We're left with a game that feels like little more than a Shinji Mikami wankfest, that has no business being released in 2014

The controls are outright bizarre. It's a difficult enough game as it is, but when you combine that with having to drag your mouse around like it's stuck in tar and it's a recipe for disaster, and you simply have to use a control to get anywhere close to the meat of the game.

The game doesn't look too impressive either, certainly for a 2014 game. It feels like a game from the PS3 era. Frame rate drops are persistent too, camera angles throughout vary between making little sense to being utterly stupid in their placement, and this is one of the only games to give me an acute feeling of motion sickness throughout; when a game literally makes you feel like you're going to vomit, you know you've done something wrong.

But for all that, there's a decent game lying underneath the problems. For PS4/XB1, this could very well be a good title on a platform which obviously demands controller support and therefore doesn't feel gimped by ONLY offering you that option, but PC gamers have different expectations and this title doesn't meet them in pretty much any way.

The developers wasted an inordinate amount of time animating the player's movements to the point where normal actions like turning around, walking sideways and combat are painfully clumsy. To make matters worse, this game forces you into a bunch of stealth gameplay... That is in third person... Wow, now that sucks. Seriously? You have to decide whether you want to use your lantern to see what the heck you're doing but if you turn it on the monsters see you and ruin your day. Oh but you can't move around in the dark either, because some douchebag mischievously placed bear traps in every level that make you roll your eyes every time you step in one. But it gets even better. There are instant kill proximity bombs all over the place and as soon as they start beeping you're already dead. I said screw this game after the third time one of them blew me up. I could waste 1000 hours of my time trying to learn all the little tiny intricacies of this game just to be able to play it, but I've got to go to work and school. I don't want to play a game if it isn't fun. So to say things in another way, the Resident Evil 1 remastered remake on Steam has BETTER controls than the evil within. Now that's bad. The controls and terrible camera angles completely ruin this game. Enjoy. Expand

    - Next Generation 3rd Person View
The game features horrible 3rd person view, an enemy is close to you, be ready to not be able to use your gun, because the game is absent of a decent, offensive meele. Did i mention that you have a knife? You can't use it on close quarters wherever you need to.

    - The next generation AI, Part 1.
Probably one of the worse I've seen in years, you've seen this kind of AI behavior on those good old early 2000's games, where the Npc just follows you like there were no walls, just a straight line, ignoring obstacles.

    - Next Generation Horror Game.
Horror? Terrifying? Scary? Honestly you don't feel any kind of psychological fear, unless you eat some depressive drugs (alcohol, heroin...). Yes, you'll make a "ugh, ugly creepy boss" (the Keeper looks amazing) and that "oh not he's going to kill me" because you can't just aim at him because of the next gen 3rd person view. In short, it could be better. The horror part of this game is the rage due to bugs.

    - Next generation AI, Part 2. Difficulty is ok i guess, can be hard sometimes. For instance, you think you ave to hit that boss's eye some times, in order to trigger the next phase, when you just needs to spam grenades until it falls dead. There's people on the top reviews talking about how this game is so "old school", well...take a look at Metal Gear Solid bosses and how you just can't mindlessly spam Grenades or Pistol rounds in order to kill it, a game from like...1999?

    - Next Gen face rig/expression system: Characters have no emotions, their internal scream is clear (voice actors were ok), but nobody can save then from the almost-poker-faces they make. (please, watch Dead Space 2 acting, from characters to dialogues)

This could be an amazing game, a Triple A masterpiece, something totally worth of a sequel and probably a movie. Those games you would play again next year, and maybe in the next year too. But no, unfinished game, looks like an Alpha version of a future great game that needs a serious mechanics fix.

Btw the story is pretty interesting if you're into mind bending stuff, you know Psychology stuff, that's why it gets a 3.

Want a good horror game? Play Dead Space, then play Dead Space 2.
Bad port etc? Nah, it's just bad...

The Shift key is supposed to make the character run but sometimes it doesn't work - sometimes it does - as the script pleases. The whole game feels like it has no generic gameplay mechanics at all, and all there is is an endless row of special places where you can do the only required things and that's all. No sense of freedom or even choice. The camera is placed at an awkward angle. It's never clear which objects can be interacted with and which can't. The gameplay is about entering a room, getting killed and by that guessing what the designer wanted you to do in that room, and doing just that upon reload. Pathetic.
It's far, far from Silent Hill or Resident Evil. I have no idea who they made this game for. Still giving it 2 and not 0 because I see the great work artists have done there - unfortunately to no use.

If you don't have Xbox controller, then stay the f**k out of this game. The k+m controls are imprecise. Another technical issue is 30 fps lock; witch makes game almost unplayable, in my opinion. What’s the f******g point buying high end graphic cards if game developers lock frame rate to 30 fps? And there is this annoying aspect ratio that really grinds my gears. WTF?! It looks retarded and plays retarded. What is worse is that even it is possible to "fix" those issues, with unlocking console controls; the game still plays like crap. The aspect ratio is 2.35:1, by default and by changing aspect ratio, so it is in "full screen" mode, I notice that frame rate dropped significantly and after changing to new aspect ratio, the main character in the game "gets bigger", so much that it almost covers half of the view in the game. It seems like the whole view in the game gets somehow "cropped" or "blown up" It doesn't look nice at all. But how is the game it self. Is it scary in any way? Does it have any interesting story? The game is developed by some Japanese dude and creator of RE series, as you all probably know that already. I never played any of those games so I was kind of new to this. But if this is how those games are, then I know I never will try them. The gameplay is awful and very uninspiring. The texture in the game are just ugly, it is simply awful looking game, and what is worse is that this game is badly optimized for pc and it plays like s***. Forget high frame rates! The game doesn't feel like a survival horror game. It feels more like some clunky survival game, were you must gather some green crap, by killing monsters, so that you can upgrade your character. And then, by some miracle you get more ammo storage, better weapon damage, etc, etc. I really didn't find this kind of upgrade system interesting in survival game. Some people may find it interesting. For me it felt like some kind of unnecessary distraction. Game gets very frustrating because you die a lot, and not because of some tactical mistake made in the game. It is because of this sh***y aspect ratio and controls and all the other technical issues. It is frustrating even to make precise aiming or have any kind of control over any situation. The controls and the aspect ratio really make this game difficult to play. I don't understand what were developers thinking when they decided to make this game so unplayable. What about characters? The main characters in game are boring and sometimes annoying. I didn't care about any of them. The dialogs are boring and just made me skip most of those looong movie cut scenes, which I hate in games. I buy game to be able to interact with it. If I want a movie, I can always watch something on Netflix. Games are made to be interactive. It isn't scary game either. Maybe there are some few cheap jump scares that will make babies and small children cry, but overall, the game isn't scary at all. Though, it is very gory, which may appeal to some folks out there. It feels more like a survival game then a horror game. Disappointing! How about the story? Is it any good? If it is difficult to connect emotionally to the main characters, then the story itself will be less interesting. I got very confused and had problems to get anything meaningful from the story. I felt they were jumping from place to place all the time and I lost track of what was the story about. In the end, I really didn't care. The only thing that I really liked was the creative design of all the enemies . Would I recommend this game to anyone? Not for pc! Don't buy this game for pc. You might regret it. Expand

If I really wanted a to get a close up of a rear end of some guy I'd venture to a gay bar , with a magnifying glass in hand (vomit).

This game was supposed to be scary, well it's far from it. Watching the Exorcism backwards on mute is much scarier, in fact, playing Kirby on a monochromatic gameboy is scarier. There's gratuitous amounts of blood though. Gallons and gallons of it. What we have here is a quantity over quality conundrum, so the only way this game is bound to scare you is if you're a hemophiliac.

Maybe Mikami should get in touch with the developers at Creative Assembly to get some pointers on how a scary game should be made. In fact , if I was Japanese I'd try to lure him into one of those Japanese prank shows, where they scare the living bejesus out of the participants. He deserves it, because he's released such a disappointing schlock of a game that I waited months to come out only to be kicked in the teeth by a steaming turd boot and splashed with 3893829829283 liters of HIV infected blood.

So in the vein of conan o' brien (clueless gamer)...If a high score was a possessed ghoulish pasty white girl with a rotating head, and a really bad score was a chainsaw wielding inbred brute suffering from acromegaly. Then this game is a little girl that's lost in the woods; she's soiled herself and she's crying for mommy to come save her.

The game play elements bring nothing new to the table, e.g. some collectibles to collect for upgrading player ability, stealth-oriented game play with insufficient ammo. Generally the game play style is just like the last of us, but with a dull and boring plot. If the terror elements of the story was on par with those classic Silent Hill, then this game could be great. However, the plot element is so thin and the atmosphere is so weak due to repetitive environment and lack in story depiction. So players are left with WTH is going on here most of the game.

Finally, the game play time for this game is short. Some chapters may only last around 15 to 30 mins. If you are experienced gamer and good at stealth, you probably can beat the game within 5 hours.

It does have plenty of gore and dangerous creatures, asylum or abandoned towns settings, but it ends there. The deformed creatures are nothing but boring. There's no psychological horror or mystery, just a straightforward linear action/stealth gore. You know everything that's going on from the moment you see it. The atmosphere created is so graphically explicit that has no substantial horror in it.

You should download the game instead of buying because It is not worth the price, the developers does not deserve the support and you will get tired pretty soon and delete it, forgetting it ever existed.

but sadly it was a big let down.
30 or 60fps doesnt matter, the story and gameplay is... well boring.
its mediocre at best.. and sadly not worth the money.
Survival horror without the horror, but just alot of "zombie" splatter
I will say that the damage the monsters take is really cool

Yet another game with that awful, awful shoulder camera. It's sort of a new trend in gaming that I can't tolerate. It makes me feel unbalanced and sick, I have problems aiming, moving around and going straight with it.

I wish developers would just stick with a perfectly fine and functional centered camera (or at least gave us the option to choose). It works way better.

A poorly made rehash of Resident Evil 4. Most of the levels even look like the same Balkan village of RE4. The graphics are dull and dated, video aspect ratio is awful, and the controls are a clumsy port from a console. They put minimal effort into porting this, to the point you need to use cracked executables and other third-party tools just to get the game to run properly.

It's has horrible PC optimization- FPS in many areas can be as low as 20 fps using an overclocked i7-3770k and 2 x GTX-980 Strix cards. There is no support for widescreen aspect ratios, even with the console hack. You have to use Flawless widescreen to run at fullscreen.

Controls are terrible, you can't bind keys properly and there is extremely bad mouse lag in menus/inventory, very frustrating. The control system itself is clunky and your character bumbles and staggers around, it's made strictly for a gamepad.

I bought it on sale and I still feel ripped off, but more importantly I feel like i'm being treated like a gullible fool by the developer. We PC gamers are just an afterthought, yet we pay full prices for these sloppy-seconds.

If I could go back I would probably have just downloaded it.

It seems to have tried to take the sneaking aspect from games like Outlast or Amnesia, but the AI doesn't function well enough to make the game scary.
