If they make The Evil Within 3, i hope it’s more like first game. Part 2 was awful in my opinion at least, there was no horror or interesting locations. First game is absolute modern-horror masterpiece!

One of the best modern horror games, seems kind of underrated or maybe The Evil Within fans just are mature enough to not care about some scores on some random online sites. Overall, this game has fantastic boss fights and cool level designs. Directed by same dude who made Resident Evil 1 (and it's remake) and Resident Evil 4. It's not as good as RE4, but it's still amazing!

Very good game, in fact, one of the better modern horror games. People who dislike it, simply miss the point or just don't understand how to play it.

Not sure what happened with second game, because it was just trash. But first one is modern horror masterpiece, better than any silent hill after second one and i personally like this one way more than re7.

This is what true modern-horror game is supposed to be. Yes, of course it's inspired by silent hill and dead space, but it stands on it's own very well and also takes notes from RE4, as this game was directed by same dude who made RE4. Pretty much modern horror masterpiece. Ignore second game, it's awful.

Level design is really well thought, every chapter have some unique characteristic, never repetitive or boring. The lacking of ammunitions keeps the difficulty to a good level, never frustrating, but challenging. The longevity is also quite good, it took me about 19 hours to complete the game. Once cleared, the game will unlock some new weapon such as the rocket launcher and the machine gun. Also the Model Viewer will unlock in the main menu, so it's possible to look closely to all the characters and creatures of the game.
My only negative note is that sometimes you encounter some hidden track that kills you inevitably. But fortunately there is an abundance of checkpoints, so the player doesn't really need to redo very long parts of the tevel.
I really recommend this game to all Resident Evil fans and whoever likes classics horrors.

Done. 12:31:45 with 56 deaths. Despite it's shortcomings, this is one of my favourite Mikami games. But Chapter 15 is so anti-climatic. That said, I'm pleasantly surprised by the story. It's deeper than I thought it would be, and it clicks nicely.

All in all, 9 or so/10 for me. My gripes are mainly on the tech side, which I have a feeling is due to id Tech 5 and them not knowing what to do with it. In many ways it surpasses RE4, and in some ways it also falls short. But The Evil Within is better than RE4 in my eyes. That may change in subsequent playthroughs, but I love the creative effort put into this game.

I have not finished the game but have played for long enough to form an opinion of it ( chapter 4 ) even though my play-through is still in the early part of the game I can safely say its great . Its a very good survival horror and has a wonderful atmosphere about it, great areas/settings and all the elements you would expect in a survival horror, traps, puzzles, danger, low ammunition levels and cool and original enemies. plus you are tense as hell while playing .
My approach to the game is to use stealth as much as possible but the game changes gears in a split second so its not an option a lot and that's cool with me .

Haters gonna hate but I would recommend this game highly and its cheap on PC at only £34.99 compared to £50 on console .

This game has Shinji Mikami's hallmarks stamped all over it just as Resident Evil 4 did. In fact, after a slightly wibbly start with a couple of stealth set pieces, I found this game to just get better and better. For me, it's a fantastic combination of RE4 (one of my fav games mechanically speaking) and Silent Hill (one of my fav games in terms of disturbing imagery and horror).

Has it got a few rough edges here and there? In some ways yes. Like the early RE games, the voice acting and script are hammy. I found the story hard to follow, although one could argue it adds to the weirdness. Luckily for me, these elements are a very low priority in a survival horror game.

The game intentionally makes you vulnerable in a way that few games do these days and at first it can seem a bit too archaic. You can't run for too long, your movement slows when shooting, monsters hit really hard, you field of view is narrow and melee is simply there to buy you some time to turn and run in order to get some distance. However, it's still more modern in its controls and feel when compared to RE4 and 5 and it's all deliberately tuned to make a great survival horror experience. There are also a handful of QTE's (as in RE4) that sometimes catch you by surprise in an irritating way and a couple of on rails bits which, while competently done and mildly enjoyable, don't match the quality of the other levels. At least it changes the pace though.

Aparts from these things, everything is beautifully crafted. There's just so much variety and imagination. Take the environments. Just when you think you're going to be doing several levels in an open air forest village, you're whisked away to a completely different type of enclosed, modern area. These sort of changes happen regularly and keep the places you explore fresh and interesting. Just when things seem too oppressive, dark and hemmed in, you'll find yourself outdoors and in open spaces. There are ruined areas, plush areas, modern, old, surreal. There are mansions, sewers, hospitals, city streets, abattoirs, factories, dream scapes etc...There's often a lot of verticality too. It's rare for the game to be one corridor after another. Regardless of the setting though, the tense feeling of horror or apprehension is almost always present, only giving way now and then to let you relax in order to start ramping it up again. Also, in true RE fashion, you'll find yourself breathing a sigh of relief when you find a save room, despite the fact the game also uses checkpoints.

Monsters are varied too. Just when you think you're gonna face another room of basic enemies, you'll face a mini boss, or a specially crafted arena where you'll fight a smaller group of unique enemies. You might be on the run from an indestructible creature (nemesis style) or maybe fighting ordinary enemies but with some sort of environmental challenge to deal with at the same time. For example, you might have to fight while avoiding rotating blades or being stuck on a small moving platform. There is obviously deliberate purpose behind virtually all the steps you take to get from A to B, it all feels handcrafted and thoughtfully put together.

I could go on and on but suffice to say that the other things the game offers all enhance the experience. Upgrade trees are interesting, feel meaningful and are rewarding. Ammo and health conservation matter. Finding the statue collectibles has actual impact since it provides the chance for much needed ammo and health kits. Weapon selection is important too depending on your situation and the arms at your disposal all have very specific attributes which are fun to learn. The graphics are very good in terms of the ambience they provide and there's a lot of attention to detail in the environment. Sound is used to good effect and music often increases the feeling of dread and fear. Stealth is handled well and is necessary in order to save ammo and avoid confrontation. Clearing a room of enemies without being seen, collecting all the XP and items knowing you wasted nothing is very satisfying.

Anyway, I would urge anyone who likes survival horror and, in particular, RE4 to give this a shot. Btw, although I enojyed EW2, I found this game to be superior in every way except story, cutscenes and voice acting.

Great game, tense atmosphere, good mechanic. Battle is a bit fiddly at times and camera can become a tad frustrating, however the camera makes a dynamic feel and I think if I was shooting at barbed wire clad, flesh eating enemies I would probably have a tough time holding a gun steady. As you progress and upgrade the battle mechanics become far better.

The Evil Within plays very much like you’re in a horror movie. With moments based on the Japanese style horror genre that always makes for some serious panic inducing scenes, that never gets any less intense. The game however in most part isn't that scary, apart from a few jump scares, it relies more on gross out shock and intense gameplay. I feel the story is better than other horror games like Resident Evil, or maybe it's just nice to have a change from those games and experience something different. I would recommend The Evil Within to any horror fan.

A guy chasing you with a chainsaw is scary, but if its a fat guy with a skin mask it’s somehow worse.

This was the return of the survival horror genre to the gaming world, long before Capcom started to pay attention to their Resident Evil franchise.

It's more action oriented like Resident Evil 4 , it's not like the old survival tittles. This game adds some new mechanics to the genre such as: -Stealth. -Crafting ammo and resources. -Collecting keys to open cabinets for random loot.

If you were planning on playing this game , you should start with this one first instead of going for the second title. (That's a different story)

I finished RE7 not long ago and thought no other horror game could top it, but boy, was I wrong. The Evil Within taps into many emotions. Fear, paranoia, desolation, hopelessness, and more. Although this game is in 3rd person, everything about the atmosphere and environment totally made up for it. The visual effects used to add to the paranoia was nothing I have ever experienced in a game. It made you feel like there was no hope of escape from this nightmare. The lighting and structures were made perfectly which added to the fear.

The save points were done in such a unique way. The nurse inside the mental hospital, Sebastion's journal, the Krimson newspaper, all added so much mystery to the plot. It made me want to continue, just to see what this whole situation is about. This leads into the amazing story telling. The game only gives you bits and pieces of the story. Over the course of the game, you slowly uncover what is really going on. The way it unravelled through flashbacks, and visions was awesome. The characters and dialogues were all amazing. You could see them struggle, as they slowly lose their mind.

I would have easily given this game a 10, but there were some hiccups when it came to the stealth portion of the game. Sometimes enemies who definitely shouldn't have notice me, would notice me, and walk over. Some of the traps felt unfair, as it was too hidden. Some QTE sequences were too unclear. All of these made some of the deaths feel unfair. But added up, these didn't deter too much from the experience as a whole. The horror experience totally makes up for it.

Deserves much higher Metacritic score. I haven't played horror games this good since 2014, except for Resident Evil 7,8 and 2 Remake. By the way, the only similar thing about the second game is that they put "2" next to the name of the game. Fortunately, you can finish this game and not play the second game.

That doesn't mean that the textures are from the sharpest end of the stick it's just that it seems that thanks to idTech5 almost all the textures contain unique features in them. Level design is very organic. Sound and music is ok but not very remarkable. Monster design is very good. Controls are fairly responsive after you active the 60 FPS mode. I didn't find the film black bars problematic but rather played the game without them. The idea is that there are effects based on taking in and out the black film bars on top and bottom part of the screen. Adjusting FOV allows you to see around. The game has few design flaws regarding the stealth elements. With ammunition very scarce that is the perfect recipe to some really challenging difficulty spikes inside the game. Plot has been written in such a way they player should play the game through at least twice to understand the plot in its entirely. It has lots of interesting details and stuff that recent games have not had. Overall it's a great game and very much something akin to a spiritual remake of Resident Evil 4. Additional note about Windows-PC version is that you might have to adjust the game through the console to make it work the way you want even with the patch that fixed many of the issues reviews here at Metacritic complain about. Now some people will say Bethesda said it was meant to be played at 30 fps, but that is **** they just say that so the consoles can run the game.

Besides all that bickering! The game, (which I have not beaten yet) so far is what you would expect from an action horror game. This game is hard, sets an atmosphere, art style is gloomy, dark and uses light correctly You don't get a lot of ammo, so you must conserve to survive. AND the cutscenes are in engine! Not like those crappy games where the cutscenes drop down to 30fps or just straight CG scenes.

Well, I know I am not a writer, but I hope this review helps some people buy this game. I am having a great time playing the game, after I figured out how to ditch the 30fps cap (which was easy to do). Hope you all love and play this with me!

The addition of the traps were great, not to mention how many options it opens for you when actually performing combat.

Combat was slow , which may have felt dated to some; it may have been a design choice to make that game more ponderous.... Combat was not brilliant, but it worked ok for me. I have played many games with worse weapons, or at least the feel of them and although some were not that original, the upgrades did open them up somewhat. Again though combat was significantly improved by having a fair amount of environmental traps that would work against the enemy.

The atmosphere and horror aesthetic were straight up great. I found these levels creepy and dank, but there were a few serene environments and epic back drops too. These did make the linear levels a lot better, as most were just go from a to b, linear environments. This is not a bad thing. The presentation of this game was very good.

Horror games do follow the same 'recipe' for story and this , for me was great, the grim feel of the game, the usual miserable rich and hard done by boy with a wrapped connection with his kin as well his parents. I felt most of the descriptions and details were good relating to the characters here. Though the end result did not become that deep when you added it up. It was a good a immersion factor...

The sound design I felt was great; the variation of the music also was refreshing; though I liked heavy, dark and ambient music. Most of the important voice acting was good too; though some was quite wooden.

The story was all over the place in the long run and I can see why some may think it was half-arsed... But I don't think it was... It was dreamy and it was holding it's cards close, so it was almost un-interpretable otherwise. Sure this hurts the story, and the characters are pretty dumb; but I felt that was excusable given there was noticeable tension between the characters and I felt like that was believable. The story was not bad - at least its not completely Generic! And they tried something different!

The ending and the way the premise was handled , I will agree was a let down somewhat. But given the way it was meant to be, I think the dream world-ishness made it less believable , not to mentions the length of the game and how it progressed. This was long and it felt long at times, thought I felt it rewarded you.

Again the bosses and the creativity was great with this game, not to mention the death sequences which are phenomenal and at times make me glad I died that they were so brutal and OTT.

I have this on PC and I have had no issues with performance at all.

It starts out slowly, a little too slow for many. After you get past the initial stealth mechanic, it gets to feel more like resident evil 4/5. It's a good creepy horror game. We haven't had one in a little while. A few sections feel a little too difficult. 15 chapters. The game really get started around chapter 3 or 4. Worth playing through twice.

Not sure why some people are being so negative about this game as it was well polished and delivered what I was expecting. You can't just play this as a shooter like some people claimed here (maybe they are on casual?), if you do that you do not have enough ammo to continue. You need to use stealth and the environment to help clear out enemies while retaining enough ammo for bosses. The last couple of chapters do stray from this though and I ended up with far more parts for the agony crossbow than I could use.

Terrific scenes of blood and gore, you're hurled through dark corridors and absurd scenes of violent horror without room for breathing. Burning bodies is a nice touch and the scarcity of matches will have you often deciding who to burn and who to leave behind.

The Bad: Graphics are hit and miss. Some nice textures and art direction but a very aged feel to the game. Enemy AI can be blantantly dumb, sometimes getting stuck on fences and just walking eternally in place. Sometimes dying can feel unfair and leave you frustrated. You'll often not realize what's going to kill you and aren't prepared for death. Most of the enemies are zombie cannon-fodder, similar to Resident Evil 4.

The controversy: While the PC port "works", there does seem to be a few problems. The menus are otpimized for controllers with weird mouse lag at the title screen. Many people complain about the letterboxing but I feel like it adds to the claustrophobic cinematic horror of the game. After 2 chapters on my 23inch monitor I forgot they even existed. The key binding and ingame controls get alot of flakk but I don't see the issue. It plays much like Dead Space on the PC; a bit wishy washy and clunky but that's what classic survival horror is about. Characters are all very cheesy and cliche with baddish voice acting. If you came into the game expecting that Resident Evil appeal, then you'll probably enjoy the cheesiness of it. If you didn't you might be put off by it.

My thoughts: I really love the atmosphere and survival of this game. Jump scares and spooky monsters did not keep me tense, it was the lack of supplies and horrific environments. Many people don't touch on the psychological horror of the game, complaining about the lack of story. Most of the story progression comes in clues from the environment, including newspaper clippings, photos, and lines from the characters. The center of the game without spoiling the plot is just you being tortured relentlessly by some sick superhuman power. Thrown endlessly into horrible environments and just when you feel like you've made progress or caught up with your allies you're tossed into yet another torturous bloody pit or dark corridor. It's taxing on your mental state as your accomplishments are tossed away in an instant.

On a last note the charm of the Shinji Mikami really shine through in this game. In part due to the characters as I mentioned in controversy, in part due to the touches of absurdity found throughout the game. Like why am I being chased around by a giant dog monster while I try to retrieve my friend's glasses, or why am I running through a castle environment while zombies in wood boxes shoot gatling gun harpoons at me. I don't know. It's just the kind of game this dude makes. If you love what Mikami makes I don't see how you can not love this game.

I've seen a number of terrible reviews here that say get it on a console because the PC has black bars. Well guess what idiots... the console versions have them also & as stated, they are NOT removeable on the consoles. People calling this a bad port either have a terrible system or haven't even played the game - because it actually runs better and looks better on PC than on any other platform. Now, regarding the gameplay, I personally love it. Does it have stealth? Yes, but that's not all it has as some of the bad reviews state. Again, have they even PLAYED the game outside of the first two chapters? I would guess not because they would know the game takes several turns in gameplay styles in different chapters. Regardless, the game being either fun or scary is subjective. The point of my review is to get across that people should ignore the reviewers giving this bad ratings because it's a "horrible port", because it runs poorly, or that it has black bars. Those people are wrong and completely clueless. How it has a user rating that's significantly lower than even the PS3/360 versions (which are the worst - especially in the graphics department), when it's even better than the PS4/XBone versions is beyond me. He is the Creator of the cult series Resident Evil, he also in his time made the revolution game Resident Evil 4, when it reinvented the genre of survival horror. Within the walls of Bethesda, he founded his own Studio - Tango Gameworks and started to develop The Evil Withi (original title - Psychobreak). Naturally the expectations were large, all waiting for a new revolution in the genre. Received we not revolution, but evolution.

The Evil Within is a survival horror with a complex plot. And this is the case when you dig into it and think is really interesting. Our controlled character Sebastian Castellanos. Together with him we were in a psychedelic hell. To dilute our lonely adventure will be his partner Julie Kidman and Joseph ODA as well as rare doctor Jimenez and Leslie. The plot of the game, though good, is twisted, but the problem is that it just a little. Approximately from 2 to 9 Chapter, the plot does not develop and we have all this time, in fact, just a gameplay adventure. Ongoing survival, which is poorly supported by the plot. But Chapter 9 begins the normal flow of the plot and max included psychedelia. We also find notes on the family of Sebastian, which in the end just be an interesting story, which is not developed (although we already know that the second part will be in fact his personal story, and there may we all know).

In terms of gameplay it really is survival. cartridges and lacelock always in the shotgun, all you need to save, and shoot accurately. The game does not forgive mistakes. Even normal enemies can kill the main character with a few strokes, bosses and did the same fierce, some even vanscott you. The game has stealth, but we will not use very often. This is not a stealth game and more of a third-person shooter. sometimes the game stops being horror and becomes just a shooter, which is not always pleasant. I wish the game was designed in the same tempo-rhythm. At the locations there are traps that we can defuse, and can lure them into enemies, which is very useful. If we can disarm traps, will give us details which we will spend on bolts for the crossbow (bolts of different types). As for locations, you can find the "gel", which is the pumping of the protagonist. In upgrading all standard.

The locations are varied and beautiful. Will visit in the devastated city, and in the catacombs, and in the village. The game looks cinematic (not even taking into account strip that can be switched off), and also quite beautiful. From graphics to spit not want to. That's just the game itself is technically not done very well. At the start, it was lag, but now everything is fixed. You can also notice frequent pogrugenie textures (thanks to id Tech 5 engine).

The enemies in the game look cool, repulsive and a bit scary. If ordinary opponents can be overcome without too much skill, the bosses require special tactics.

The game went 3 DLC: 2 story and 1 meat just for entertainment. In story DLC "The Assignment" and "The Consequence" we play for Julie Kidman. The gameplay for it is different, because now that we have stealth (shoot too give, but a little). These additions do the plot and reveal the history from a different perspective. It is evident that they, the developers tried to listen to player feedback. The third DLC "The Executioner" not the plot, and meaty, bloody entertainment. We play for the Keeper - Catgroove. We destroy the enemies with extreme brutality.

The Evil Within - it's this squeeze of creativity Sensi Mikami. It is felt that this game did it. Even unused demo for RE4 found their application. References complete: from the first appearance of the possessed to destroy the main guy. And it's not bad. The game is really about survival, but unfortunately it's not horror. The game pumps, and there are scary moments, there are many gallons of blood and dismemberment juicy, the authors often play with reality, but do not take this game as a horror movie. This third-person shooter with elements of survival. The story was interesting, but it was too rough, and a lot of things to thinking the most, besides most of the game we have the bare gameplay mechanics, which, of course, still interesting, but it would be nice to spread the story throughout the game. A revolution in the genre didn't happen, but came out great development. This is the good old Resident Evil, but more psychedelic and bloody. Can't say that TEW is my most favorite game, also is not to say that it is the most terrible of its horror brethren. But I passed it 2 times (second time with DLS) and want to go third, followed by probably still. The game is addictive, makes her return in this terrifying world.

The story is intentionally confusing and made me interested in understanding it fully. The sound design is quite good and the level design is very well done. There is a lot of different enemies, so it never gets boring. Gameplaywise, it presents a good challenge, especially in the highest difficulties. Only cons for me were the clunky maniability of the character and the final boss fight, which was a bit disapponting to be honnest. Expand

The luxury of PC is that we will be able to remove them(and actually there are a few mods to do this). Now that we have that out of the way, let us move on to the second huge issue people seem to have. 30 FPS. On PC it is not nearly as stuttering(or noticeable) as consoles. People are choosing to moan about something, because they feel entitled. They have always said this game would run at 30FPS and you knew this before purchase. Thankfully, once again, there are console commands, and most likely some mods that will fix this. As for the actual game(which reviews should be based on) it is a fairly decent survival/horror game, that starts off fairly slow, and builds a decent(not amazing) story along the way. Some enemy fights, are incredibly annoying, but some of the boss battles offer a unique experience that will ramp up the tension. I don't feel that the game is a true terrifying experience, as it commits closer to the Resident Evil formula(more along the lines of 4), but some situations pit you in scenarios where you will have to think on your feet. The designs in this game are absolutely beautiful and some bosses are incredibly unique. Overall if your a survivor horror fan, then you are in for a decent experience. Expand

    - One of the worst horror games I have ever played this year.
    - The voice acting is laughable, being Leslie and Castellanos the worse by far.
    - Poorly optimized for pc, probably was not even tested. If you move the mouse in the pause menu, when you read a file the text won't scroll, that may look like a small issue, but it's awful. I gotta pause the game without moving the mouse and going through the files, Bethesda should be embarrased for not testing this.
    - The keyboard is poorly optimized, the character will move in any direction. I ended up getting killed because the game won't register the keyboard key I am pressing, there's also a button delay sometimes, which makes the game unplayable
    - Chapter 10 is atrocious, I was liking the game until I played this chapter, annoying enemies everywhere
    - Weak and pathetic main character, I can run faster and longer in real life than that trained "cop", it is embarrasing watching how fast he gets tired, even with the sprint upgrades. HE looks like a 60 yrs old retired cop rather than a young one, pathetic deign.
    - Beyond awful graphics and textures, you can see the pixelation if you look closely.
    - Annoying combat mechanics, enemies will always have advantage in every aspect
    - Tedious trap disarming, making the game hard to enjoy

Bethesda **** up this time, and they make things even worse with Evil within 2, they **** up Doom franchise with Doom Eternal, this guys just don't learn. The only reason I give this a 7 instead of a 6, is because I love Shinji Mikami concept, and I love the atmosphere and art design of this game.

I actually played The Evil Within 2 before this one, which didn't ruin it for me but it did highlight the improvements made to the sequel, of which there were numerous.

Overall I definitely enjoyed The Evil Within, the combat is very satisfying, it's just fun to play, it never gets old shooting off enemies heads and limbs, or setting them on fire, however the aiming definitely was a little off, sometimes bullets seemed to just pass through enemies. There were a couple of annoyances that did hurt the gameplay though, the main one being you can only bind 4 items to hotkeys, even through the config file and it's just not enough, having to constantly go into your inventory manually and select an item or weapon was very clunky (you can bind up to 10 in the sequel which is plenty). I also didn't like the dedicated melee button, in the sequel you melee with MB1 if you're not aiming down-sights with a firearm, this felt so much more refined, the melee ability was also quite clumsy and you'd often miss the oversized crate you were trying to destroy for ammo.

The story was decent but not great, it's also very confusing, it would have been even more so if I hadn't played the sequel first which does spoil the first game a little. The voice acting again is just OK, really nothing special at all, serviceable sums it up nicely. The audio in general was good though, from the monsters screaming as you burn them alive to the squish noise when you run over them with a vehicle. Visually I liked the style but it's not a massive looker, plus the performance is still really bad after all these years, things were improved but never fixed (you can now disable the black bars, but you'll see a 15-30fps hit depending on the area, you can also select 60fps mode whereas previously the game was locked to 30fps). I had to run the game at 900p instead of my native 1080p to hit 60fps stable in all situations which isn't ideal, but it's much better than playing with black bars at 1080p IMO. i'm using a very common build with a 3570k @ 4.3GHz, GTX 970 and 16GB DDR3 2133MHz, if you have better than this you'll be able to stick to 1080p as I wasn't far off but I can't abide dips.

I will say there were too many one shot mechanics throughout the game, where if you go the wrong way or perform the wrong action you just die and have to start again, sometimes this is OK if it's a clear mistake you made, but many of the times I died I didn't do anything blatantly wrong so it was frustrating. Thankfully the devs removed this mechanic almost entirely from the sequel.

Grab it when it's on sale if you're a fan of survival horror games like Resident Evil as I'm sure you'll enjoy it, and you can get it for pennies these days.

    What the game does
After being disappointed by several releases this year I purchased this game with some reservation, having spent some time playing the game and taking the time to learn how it operates however I was pleasantly surprised. I find it to be an enjoyable experience with some shortcomings unlike many recent releases however the positives seem to outweigh the negatives.

What the game does well is convey a sense of urgency in an environment where you absolutely must take your time, which successfully gives the impression of tension and adds to the atmosphere. Anyone failing to take their time with this will be brutally slaughtered, full stop. Enemy kills are visually impressive and gory and often leave you feeling humiliated. The tension is topped off by a morbid brooding atmosphere and you spend a lot of time as a prisoner of your own paranoia, peeking around corners, watching your back. and all with good reason.

No major scares with this one but there are surprises and they provide a few WTF moments. Sophisticated traps which you can use against enemies, grenades, even matches can become weapons and a crossbow with an assortment of bolts, each with it's own purpose and the ability to craft them as you please. Combine these weapons with an excellent and versatile levelling system that encourages you to keep looking for ways to further upgrade your character and what you have is an impressive set up.

Unfortunately this game can be very frustrating especially if you've been getting hacked to death in the same place for half an hour. The camera angles may have you squinting at some points and unless you have a desire to go blind, I'd recommend ignoring the instructions given to you about brightness levels and just turn it UP.

The games clunky mechanics need to be mastered and you don't actually realise how open the environments are sometimes and there's a lot to be missed.

The graphics are great and the enemies are well designed and intelligent, the gameplay successfully merges with the atmosphere and giving zombies weapons makes for an interesting change. But you may find it's all just too much to handle, it's frustrating, it's time consuming and it's difficult to progress through but rewarding when you do. If you're into survival horror you will like this but it isn't exactly for everyone.

The game can be frustrating, a bit too difficult, where to reduce the difficulty is associated with starting the whole chapter again, but... in the other hand game is challenging, which is rare in todays vid. games. Optimization leaves much to be desired, graphically it is very good, but it should work much, much smoother. But if someone can turn a blind eye to these failings, will have a good time.

Longevity is around 8 to10 hours for the first playthrough so not bad at all considering the genre, adding several dlc and second playthrough with new weapons can increase to 20 hours minimum, Big problem here is the pc porting from the consoles. It is just bad, with a 970 60 fps on medium settings is not always possible, even after patches. Now they are not updating the game anymore so it will stay like this forever. My advice is to find it online at a really cheap price (I was able to find it for 6-7 euros) and that's a bargain for this game.
Be careful because there are several jump scares and in general will keep you at the edge of your seat, but that's the point of the game!

    - Subtle post-process effects like, noise, glows/blooms, chromatic aberration and some dithering for AO and the keylight shadows. Particle sprites for dust, smoke and fire are acceptable and well executed for a multi-platformer.
    - Facial expression looks better in person than in YouTube videos or wherever you watched gameplay. Is not hyper-realistic but it looks better than I expected (I talk more about graphics in the “cons” section)
    - Boss fights. They are good and tense.
    - Aside it’s linear I like the path the developers made for the player.
    - The OST is very good.
    - Clever UI and item mapping.
    - And of course Resident Evil, other survival horror games and movies references.
    - My favorite chapters are 6, 7 and the end of 9th :)
    - The Model Viewer ;)

    Cons:
    - The ending and the last chapters are less interesting than the first 60% (wich is great).
    - Meleé and barehand fights are too simple (at least is not Silent Hill Downpour hahaha!)
    - I couldn’t enjoy much of the TLOU alike stealth system. I think is a good addition but not that well executed.
    - I hate Ruvik's design (at least during game). Maybe similar concept (skinny, cryptic etc…but not as cliché as he was with his actions).
    - It looks really good in general but they could have improved pop-up textures, tessellation and DOF on the idTech5.
    - Dynamic shadows resolution.
    - The city chapters are horrible in terms of design. I hate ghouls with weapons…I hate modernity in this kind of games. I preferred the “Nocturne” ghouls with thompsons haha! they had more style.
    - Lack of turn around button (at least I didn't find it during my first playthrough)
    - Lack of option Co-Op. Is not that bad because it helps you to feel helpless but maybe for a DLC it would be great.
    - In this era of "Souls" games it would be great to see more options for the checkpoint system.
    - Bad AI (sometimes) and lame difficulty at moments (in “Survival Mode” wich is considered “normal)
    - The “cast” is not bad but I wished more characters involved…and more clothes states / variations during the story. BTW they could have helped Jennifer Carpenter to make a better role more fittable for her personality.

I was expecting something less predictable and darker. Something different from RE4,5 and 6 with more puzzle solving and twisted plot. But no matter what are the cons. It's a good game wich I want to play a few more times :)

It is a pity that the game is designed for consoles, and in the form in which appears on the PC (control, camera, fov, lock fps, soap textures, performance), the game is strong in its genre, many times I was more pleasant and interesting to play than in RE4, beautiful level design, some locations is admired and offended, from the fact that if originally sharpened under the PC would be even juicier and better, and only a curved port, which could be worse. Now about the game as a whole, exactly to 7 episodes, and this is exactly half of the game everything was interesting and feed and gameplay, opponents and ways to eliminate them and bypass, but then everything starts to repeat, the enemies become more, and no longer want to crawl for a long time and wait until the enemy turns his back or lure bottles, you want to either run or go into battle in the open, do not risk anything, not on the same Akum play. In General, you could do less episodes, about 12, especially because some were too short or do not understand what is needed, it would have kept the freshness and no sagging. The main character liked the charisma and appearance. the main villain of the rules, but the ending is not very much, I thought it would be something original, and even so it was clear what was happening.
