I bought it many years ago when I was at the seaside and I still have some good memories about it. It was a real fun to play in the evenings and even today, it's still present on my old PC.

S.W.I.N.E. is a beautiful looking real-time strategy game. The campaign is funny and sarcastic and the gameplay is a lot of fun. After some hours into the game, I realized that it´s a bit too easy and repetitive. Nevertheless worth checking out for genre lovers and fans of games like Sudden Strike.

A great concept but poorly executed. You don't have any way of creating more vehicles in-between the game. Your tanks aren't really more powerful than the enemy's and yet you are fighting an unfair battle right from the start where you have 8-10 tanks while the enemy can have 30 or even more.

Ordering air strikes takes SP points. And after several hours of playing it is still not clear

And after several hours of playing it is still not clear how exactly we earn these SP points. So far I have only seen it being given at the start of a level.

Air strikes are also quite useless because they take way too much time. Meanwhile you're fighting tough enemy units who bring you down to low health before the airstrike finally comes and takes out like 3-4 tanks (max). Considering that you're facing usually 20+ enemy units I think the air strikes become pretty useless.

Another bunch of units are also quite useless. The mine-layer for example. The enemy always has free land to enter from. Even if you are in a land-locked island you will never get the time to actually lay mines along a road. Which makes the whole concept of laying mines quite useless.

Similarily, canons are also quite useless. They take too much time to deploy, they're extremely slow, and their fire rate is too low to be of any practical use. You could kill of enemy tanks using the most ordinary scout tanks.

So the game is completely spoiled by the bad design choices and bugs. Yes, there are bugs.

There are bugs where the endgame doesn't trigger. Or bugs when a scenario triggers unexpectedly or enemy tanks appear out of thin air even though you had cleaned up an area before.

The worst bug though is when you buy vehicles (like towing vehicles) or supplies and they don't show up on the level.

Overall, a game that would make even pigs and rabbits feel ashamed.

While there's certainly a level of class and charm to go along with the laughs and lightheartedness in this war game, there's also more than a little helping of frustration.

The only downsides to this game are the slightly unimaginative campaigns, and the oh-so-annoying voice-overs, which feature the worst "foreign" accents I've heard in a while. [Mar 2002, p.89]
  3. Control is simple though, and I’d have to say this might be a worthy diversion for a young gamer or perhaps a casual gamer, but a veteran gamer should seek elsewhere for that delicious, in-depth RTS fixin.
