The game is very well done.

It's a top-down squad management game where you manage a group of survivors of a zombie appocalypse who are trying to take back their town.

The interface features basically a series of "nodes" which represent areas of your town. These nodes are randomly generated, so no two games are ever truly alike.

Clicking on a node allows you to decide who you will take with you on your hunt. Once you arrive, you have to scout out the area, investigate buildings, and kill off the zombies that are there. However, the big mechanic of the game is the fog of war. You are limited in what you can see by the flashlight you carry. Anything not in the beam if it's not making noise is invisible. Many times, you will enter buildings or turn corners and find yourself face-to-face with trouble.

You can pick up scrap as you wonder the level. There's a crafting system whereby you use the scraps to build weapons, motion detectors, and other such fare.

In terms of pros, the graphics are simple, the game is well coded, I found no bugs, the idea was sound, and the atmosphere is very engaging. I found myself very interested in the future of this motley band of de facto zombie hunters. The game does a good job of limiting what you find so you're never quite at 100% health. This game really focused on replayability.

In terms of cons, every time you click on the level to send your guys someplace, they spout out various randomly assigned audio cues like, "yep" or "on the way". Every time. This can be very annoying, so this game is best played with the audio off.

Without question, this is definitely something you should check out. It's a zombie game with as little "zombie" tropes as possible. The first time you burst through a door to find a nest of zombies waiting on the other side, you'll be hooked.

Survive a horde of zombies while you find controls to disable the alarm. If you really, really like the Left 4 Dead series, that might appeal to you. Or it might upset you that someone has condensed your favorite game down to a short-form Flash format.

The game's second biggest problem is that it just generally lacks any real design. All the buildings are out in the middle of the world's largest concrete squares. No attempt is made to make it look like you're in a city, or a forest, or anything other than a giant parking lot. The buildings are randomly generated, but they always have predictably-sized rectangular rooms, so the experience never really changes from building to building, which totally defeats the purpose of being random. Somehow, it still feels like you're just playing the same level over and over.

Briefly, I will also note that I can't decide whether the sound design or MS Paint art is worse. If you've played Teleglitch, you know that a game doesn't need music or character portraits to be atmospheric and engaging. Survivor Squad missed that memo.

Finally, the game lacks any kind of real challenge. The most effective tactic is usually just parking your squad outside a building and mowing down all the zombies as they execute their single AI routine. After 30 seconds, the zombies that didn't attack you will be highlighted, so you will never be surprised from a dark corner. There is no tension. You can't even run out of ammo.

Moreover, while I'm very supportive of small development groups, Survivor Squad suffers without an on-the-ball designer. You can't ask $10 for decent code wrapped in only a few hours of implementation.
