Not as good as I hoped, sadly. 3 big things I disliked:
---POOR MUSIC CHOICE: SoR 1 and 2 were amazing, melodic, one of the best OST in 16bits games. SoR3 killed the atmosphere with noisy experimental music and this game instead of the well-loved first games, chooses a non melodic style closer to the 3rd. Why would they do that? And where's the Stage Clear tune? :(
    ---TOO DARK, TOO

---TOO DARK, TOO DIRTY: Scenarios used to be colourful and nice to the eye. Instead of the 80s-90s style, the ones here look like a post-apocalyptic rioty mess, all dirty and decadent. Instead of saving a cool city that someone is f*ing up, I feel I'm in a f*ed up city where there's just trash everywhere.
---SLOW MOVEMENT, OFTEN FRUSTRATING COMBATS. Why can't the characters run?? Many things seem copied here from the SoR Remake the fans made years ago, yet this game missed key elements of the gameplay they did saw as key: the freedom of running and dodging attacks. Then there's things that feel weird like some enemies who are immune to your hits, and some enemy attacks that are unstoppable: if a guy throws me an air kick, I want to be able to stop it with a great uppah! Have options beyond just causing damage or skipping things jumping like a rabbit or using the special attack.

GOOD STUFF: taking away these 3 things, which really dissapointed me as a fan of the first 2 games and the unofficial remake, the game is a pretty solid one. The new combo system, and coordinated attacks between the several players are really cool. Having more than 2 players on screen is great too. I'm not sure there weren't better alternatives to the comic style for the graphics, but this one does work quite well. And there are nice surprises like being able to go into the arcades to live old moments.

good game , even more enjoyable when playing online or in local couch co-op mode, bit pricey I thought as the main campaign was completed in 3hrs, and the other modes have limited appeal, am getting a bit bored of it after just 5 hrs play.

The devs of this game probably never played a classic SOR game cause they do not understand what a best em up is. The game hardly remembers to the classics. There are some things done well and some things done horribly wrong.

    Positive (+)
+ Classic style gameplay, thankfully there is an option to choose that, otherwise it would be a negative
+ The option to choose retro music, cause the new one is mediocre at best
+ The ability to replenish the small ammount of health lost after a special move by hitting enemies, sadly it takes many hits to recover it, so most of the times you are going to get hit while doing that and loose even more health
+ The powerful special move used by collecting stars, it works well but it does not do enough damage to the bosses
+ Some cool secrets (like the retro stage) and decent combos to make
+ The animations are fluid and good looking, but I don't like the hand-drawn artstyle

    Negative (-)
    - Awful hitbox detection, making combat very slow and confusing
    - Enemies will have advantage most of the time, either by moving faster or by punching first
    - Unfair boss battles and combos against the player, looks like the AI can make complex combos without a problem while the player gets handicapped constantly by limiting combos and damage done
    - Unforgiving, brutal and artifficial difficulty, even on Normal. That is the reason why the game has unlimited credits. I would rather play a fair (somewhat forgiving) game with not very limited continues
    - Ugly characters, even Axel, looks awful, and not only does he look old and ugly, but he is also pretty bad in combat. Blaze is the only good lookin character in this game, gimme a break Sega.

While this game deserves a 5, I would go ahead and give it a 6/10, an extra point just for nostalgia and for the fact that they revived a long time dead franchise, thx for that I guess. but they could have made a much better game with better controls, because this controls are terrible. Hope SOR 5 is better than this failed attempt.

Well, its "Street of rage" definitely, loyal to the original ones. But actually too loyal! some game-play bugs are steel there specially in movement and fighting. Music and UI are great. Overall, worth it to spend money and time. Thanks SEGA.

Crashes, disconnects, freezes, lag. Enemies are more mobile than you, can attack at angles, and pretty much any time they do a jump attack, you're gonna take a hit. Game is overrated as ****.

Streets of Rage 4 is a nostalgic throwback, a side-scrolling beat’em up in the style of old arcade games.

Unfortunately, time has not treated these games very well, and the game is very simplistic. Moving around and beating up folks just doesn’t have the same charm as it used to, and it really wants to be something you play with your friends, as there’s just not a whole lot of substance

The bosses are okay, but nothing to write home about, and the overall mechanics are kind of clunky, with slow moving characters with limited mobility and attack patterns. It feels like an old game, even though it looks nice, and it just kind of illustrates why it is that they don’t really make beat’em up games anymore – they’re just too simple compared to more interesting modern-day works that have more elaborate and involved gameplay.

Overall, I can’t really recommend this – while it is a nostalgia trip, the actual core gameplay is still very much early 1990s, and the world has just moved on from that, and in a good way; games are just a lot better now to play, and feel more dynamic than this.

Overall, this game was fun, has a refreshing and fun combo system. Local/online co-op is awesome and the option for 4-player local play is a great addition. Sadly, the replay value just isn’t there for me. The unlockables are all just nostalgic throwbacks that don’t really add anything new. They were extremely faithful to the SoR formula, which I know would please some hardcore fans.Overall, this game was fun, has a refreshing and fun combo system. The unlockables are all just nostalgic throwbacks that don’t really add anything new. They were extremely faithful to the SoR formula, which I know would please some hardcore fans. Maybe I’m of a minority that expected “more” out of a 23 year gap and several console generations than another by-the-books-beat-em-up with a wafer thin plot featuring a cliché anime trope pretty-boy villain.

What I would have liked to seen:
    • “Choices” that could change enemy layouts, stage routes and outcomes.
    • Different endings.
    • Editor mode: man, this game is sorely missing an editor mode and I think it would have made a world of difference.
    • Character editor mode.
    • enemy randomizer would have been fun.
    • Different routes/stages in main campaign.

    What pisses me off:
    • The removal of dodge/roll and run functions. For a game playing it so safe they removed two of the best additions in SoR2 and SoR3. I know Thor put on some weight but man even a light jog would have been cool.
    • Fat-Thor Axel, he looks like he’s been in his basement pounding doughnuts for the past “10” years.
    • Copy/paste of enemies with just a fresh coat of paint. Shiva, Dominatrix…they are all here. Been there and seen it all before.
Other thoughts: this game just isn’t worth the price of $25 on release. I hope the developers use my contribution wisely and build another Streets or Rage worthy of what’s capable in the current gen.

sidenote: Check out Fighting Force on PS1, it was originally supposed to be the sequel to SoR series on the next gen. It never really hit the mark of the Streets of Rage charm but still a decent game nonetheless.

I have mixed feelings about this game. It's great fun to pick up and plays very much how a modern SoR game should play. Probably. The character designs are great. However I find the endgame enjoyment of this game very lacking, the more you play this game the more frustrating it becomes. Imho the game plays best on hard or hardest difficulty. Imho the game plays best on hard or hardest difficulty. When you get into mania and mania+ the game doesn't get harder... it gets cheaper.

Enemies move so fast and get in and sucker punch you and break your beautiful 100+ hit combo. Many enemies rely on sucker punches, priority throws and many bosses have way too many I-frames. You have to play not with skill but to avoid the cheese of the enemies. I never really feel like a mastered a level or play style, even when I pull off mania+ S-Tier rank I feel like I cheesed my way through it.

So a fun game to pick up, but I find the endgame frustrating and unfulfilling. My advice? Play it, have some fun. Don't get trapped trying to find endgame enjoyment, there's isn't much. Move on to something else.

I also have to say I preferred some aspects of SoR2 and SoR3 over SoR4, the characters and enemies where faster and more "raw". The SoR4 characters are generally slower and more about strategic gameplay. I think SoR3 Axel is more fun to play than SoR4 Axel for instance. SoR3 Shiva is peak Streets of Rage for me.

I find this game just average for todays standard, but got totally overrated by the press and nostalgia. The formula had to be changed since in the originals there were no save points, so they made it harder since you can now retry every level on it own, but feels a bit unfair like you are not really in control. It should have the possibility to run and/or roll to make it fair. I foundI find this game just average for todays standard, but got totally overrated by the press and nostalgia. It simply doesnt shine that much to hook me :(

    **Edit**
After a bit of more playing, the game does have its apeal, it just doesnt make that big impact when you first play it. In my first play some levels seemed too long/hard, maybe playing the first time with axel is not the best option.

The game has some weird flaws thou, apart from not being able to roll/doge to make the game more fair a classic move when you are grabbed from behind and then you can kick oponents has been ommited. Plus in levels where the plan is not horizontal enemies keep hitting invisible walls, also in some levels there are places where you cant go even thou there is nothing there to phisically stop you, feels weird.

I've upped my review from 5 to 7 since i can now see the replay value of it and some of its appeal, althou I would enjoy a bit more polish :/ my expectations where too high I guess...

The design of enemies and characters is very good, but there are some unbalanced enemies that you cannot beat in normal mode without losing a life, which depends on the character you use, as there are some much more appealing than others, which makes the use of some of them useless, except for the design. In the end, the game shoots itself in the foot.

We take an old game and release it with modern graphics. We get the old game in the modern world. And this is a big disadvantage. It is necessary to introduce new mechanics so that the game somehow stands out against the general background, nostalgia alone is not enough.

Even remakes introduce something new. But this game didn't.

It’s no secret that beat ’em ups are better in co-op, but it’s especially evident with SoR4. If you’re playing on your own, prepare to get juggled to death, but if you bring a friend or two – you’ll be the one having a party. [Issue#246, p.54]

Simply put, this is the return that fans have been waiting for. Streets of Rage 4 delivers in so many ways that the $24.99 price point seems more than reasonable with all the included content, even with the short story mode. It may prove to be overwhelming for those unfamiliar with what it brings to the table, but you can’t deny how much love was put on the screen for beat-’em-ups and this franchise in general. If you can take the heat, you should absolutely jump in and send a signal that this is a game worth playing.
