Graphics: The graphics were actually good for an MMO (full hd, highest settings) with some deep drops in fps here and there.
Sound: Average to good soundtrack and repeatable sound effects.
Gameplay: Move, Select target, Activate skills, Mob down. A very good implementation of the successful MMO formula. The addition of companions is a good one but also been done before in the form of pets but this time around these "pets" have background stories.
OVERALL: A good story-based MMO worth of rolling a character throughout his/her story. I personally didn't want to play it any more since i saw start-to-end story cause i got "fed up". Any debate with WoW is just trolling. Two different games same mechanics. Like all similar-genre games out there, FPS, Strategy etc. Decades have passed and the mechanics remain the same. It is never good to abandon a successful formula BUT It is good to improve it.
Long story short: If you want to play a story for a month, not get into pvp and then give it up then its a very good game. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a WoW successor or killer then you will be disappointed because except the voice-acting there is nothing new.

TOR has definitely reignited my passion for MMO games. And it did so by taking a story world that I remember fondly as a single player game (minus the mess they made of KOTOR2). A great crafting system that is entirely too addictive, multiplayer interaction, space combat (which hopefully grows in the future) and the option to play out a story as 8 different characters that each give unique insight to the story world overall.

Having experienced a half dozen MMOs over the past 10 years, I can honestly say that TOR has innovated. Yes, the combat system is quite similar to other recent releases, but only insofar as it replicates what constitutes a successful system. In other words, it goes with what works. The graphics are beautiful, while not being too photorealistic. I won't sit here and write 5 pages because most people aren't going to read my horrible prose anyway. So I'll just say that I, personally, am blown away by the game. If that makes me a fanboy, then I guess I'll have to buy a t-shirt that says so.

    Good hunting.

I haven't gotten any end game characters yet...... but so far the game is one of the most fun i have played in quite a while..... it has a nice casual feel.... and runs smoothly for me..... The graphics are good enough for me and the story lines are fun and interactive..... overall worth checking out if your into mmo's.

As a Bioware and Kotor fan, i love Star Wars The Old Republic. However i can say that Star Wars The Old Republic is very engaging. It's only been out there for a while and i can't wait to see how it shapes up. After all mmorpgs evolve over time and i can't wait for all the contents they are going to add. I vouch for Bioware when they say they listen to their fans and i am sure they are working hard to give us the best possible experience. So in end i can say that as this is a Bioware game and like all Bioware games it is of high polish and is a game built on a grand scale. So If you are a fan of mmorpgs/rpgs or Bioware or Star Wars or just looking for a great game to invest some time in, then don't miss out on this. Expand

Not a fan of MMO's but the story lines for the characters I have made (Sith Warrior, Jedi Guardian, and Jedi Councilor) have been quite enjoyable. Lots of quests and missions that can be completed solo or in a group. This game really pulled through for me and will have my hard earned money until I finish the main stories.

Great AAA MMO, there are two reasons I give it an 8 instead of 10. The first is character customization and gear styles, there are not many gear variations for each armor class and the armor all looks extremely similar. The second issue is the combat is slow and very repetitive. There are not enough skills and characters do not hit hard enough for my taste.

However, every thing else is spot on. The music is excellent and never gets old, the graphics and art are not my style but they are very well done. The grouped instances are fun and some can be a challenge. The voice acting can be cheesy but otherwise very well done and keeps you in the story. The UI is works smoothly and is very functional. The classes are interesting and have a nice amount of customization via skill trees. Having a continuing story theme from planet to planet is also great. Leveling just doesn't feel like a chore in this game as it does in most MMOs, I just wish there was more character and armor variation.

AureliusRex, I don't know the last time you checked a review site, but a 9 out of 10 is more than "great" but "superb" by most game reviewers. While I agree with your review of 9, maybe you should have chosen the just good or 7 score. I also don't think you should condemn those giving it a 10 as taking anything that's thrown at them as they're only choosing 1 score above yours. No game is perfect, but if they liked it so much they want to give it a 10 that's their business. I do agree that most people giving it a 0-5 either shouldn't be playing MMOs or were going to give it that score no matter what because of their love for WOW. I'm sure you mean well, there were just a few things that stood out in your review as a bit unfair. As for the game: character creation needs work, and the searching options in the auction house are a nightmare. Other than that, this game is better than WOW in almost every way. Let's not forget people, this game is only as far a step forward from WOW as WOW was from Everquest. I wouldn't talk about WOW like it's being ripped off as you will be accused of not knowing anything about the subject you're talking about. P.S. I haven't done PVP yet, but everyone I ask about it says it's much better than WOW in that it doesn't pander to the occasional player as much as WOW did. Not only that, but your decisions matter. Your character grows, based on your decisions. The Flashpoints have a story and don't take 6 hours to complete. Each class has their own unique storyline and they really make you care about what you are doing. This is where Bioware shines. The story is excellent and always well done.

Oh, and grinding isn't needed in this game as quests and side quests offer plenty of XP and rewards.

SW:TOR is firmly at the top of my MMO list at this point. It's been called WoW with Lightsabers - while that's not entirely inaccurate, it's also entirely missing the point. It does what WoW did 7 years ago - takes the tropes, and makes them fun again.

Bioware stresses the story a lot, and with good reason. People saying it's just a voiced MMO are, again, missing out. The voiced storylines mean that, for the majority of the quests, you're actually paying attention to what's going on. Your class story is involved and interesting, with a few truly awesome moments. And, more than any other game, the characters are *characters.* The moral choices, and just general dialogue options (which should be more than familiar to anyone that's played a Bioware game) mean that people are actually developing an attachment to their character. Rather than "fire focused mage" a player is a "smuggler who does it for the money, but won't hurt women or children" or "a jedi knight who does what has to be done, regardless of light side/dark side." Even casual players end up considering key choices when they might simply have hit "complete" in another game.

To me, this is precisely what I imagined when someone said "KOTOR + MMO", with all that entails. It's not MMO 2.0, but it may well be the first mainstream MMO*RPG*.

The Old Republic achieved exactly what the developers set out to do from the get-go: Create an online RPG experience with depth of story. In this regard the game succeeds beautifully. The current problems with the PvP side of the game can be put down to the fact that it is only a month after release and these types of games need some time to mature and come into their own.

Bioware capitalized on their strength for this one: Storytelling. Using that as their base and adding the strengths that made those other titles fun has made this a fun and social experience that gave you a window into a different world for you and your friends to explore.

Fun and social. In truth, that's the core of what makes a great MMO.

The large amount of negative reviews is laughable to me. I am thoroughly enjoying The Old Republic. The game is most certainly not without its flaws. A lot of the complaints I've seen are based on the fact that it is a "wow clone". I don't disagree with this but I feel like a lot of the reasons that wow had a customer base of multiple millions for 6 years is because it had what many mmo gamers were looking for and there is nothing wrong with sticking to a similar formula. As a bounty hunter I have found the questlines to be intriguing and enjoy the Mass Effect-esque dialogue wheel. The game does a fantastic job making me feel like the hero in my story. The early flashpoints and heroic group quests feel well tuned to easing new mmo players into the genre and become more challenging as you level up. The crew skills seemed a little off at first but as i became accustomed to them I like the fact that you can multi task with them and are not forced to stand in a city by an auction house to grind them up. As i am only level 32 at the time I have not yet experienced any of the endgame content and that of course will be a big factor in determining how long I subscribe. But at the moment I am optimistic about it and my guild plans on starting operations in January. All in all I'm very impressed with the game and I feel that if Bioware takes a page out of Blizzard's book and listens to their community when making changes they will be able to keep this game afloat for a good while. Give Bioware time to smooth out the rough spots and connection issues and let the game have its growing pains. In the meantime enjoy it for the engaging storylines and the best part of the mmo genre: killing e-beasts with your friends. If the cards are played right this game will only improve with time. The graphics are great, the class stories are great, every quest has dialogue you can listen to ( if that's your thing,) and the pvp isn't half bad (although pvp is my favorite aspect, so I am a little picky about it.) A lot of effort went into this game, and it's obvious. I have played mmos for several years now, and this is the first one I will actually pay attention to the quests, and dialogue. It's well done, and if it becomes too much, you can simply spacebar through the bulk of it. At first pvp took place with all characters 10-50. Lowbies were all given a buff to bring them statwise on par with the 50s, although they lacked gear, and skills. Now, the 50s have their own bracket, and the 10-49s are all facing each other. I am hopeful at some point they will bracket it even more, to give it a more competitive nature. The pvp warzones are fun, and while they aren't perfect, I am sure others will be added later. WoW only started with 3 battlegrounds, and look at it now. Yes, the game has issues, but it's still new! Give it a chance to 'evolve' before casting it aside! I bet it will suprise ya! Expand

I'm usually pretty judgemental & harsh about MMO's as over the last several years, every release has been an unpolished mass of boring. This is NOT the case with SW:TOR in the least bit. Sure, it has some of the bugs you would expect from a newly launched MMO, and to be quite honest with you it would and should be impossible for a game of the sheer size and scale of SW:TOR to NOT have any right off the bat. On the up side, BioWare has been very responsive and quick to release hot-fixes and patches, thus eliminating the bugs and giving us performance boosts and client/engine optimizations to boot! This is the first MMO that puts the RPG into the term "MMORPG", and it does it exceedingly well. The personal story lines for each class are intriguing for the most part, the worst probably being between the Trooper & the Jedi Knight (they're not bad though, they just seem less memorable than other classes). Contrary to what some other people are saying on here, this game is very much a MMO, and is comes nowhere close to a "lobby" game. Zones are NOT instanced, and each server is NOT a bunch of copies of rooms and channels, the "phases" only happen when there are more than like 200 people in a small area at the same time. You do have to zone into the different planets when you arrive from your ship, but each zone on every planet is COMPLETELY and utterly seamless. No zoning what-so-ever on these planets which are remarkably large and seem to go on forever, once you hit your mid to late teens. The missions in the game are more interesting than say World of Warcraft's missions; as each NPC is fully voiced and interactive with dialogue between you, any group members you may be with, and the NPC itself, which creates a far more interesting and immersive gaming experience all around.

The biggest problem the game currently faces is a faction imbalance between Republic & Empire, with the latter being the most popular side, although there are servers where the reverse is true; they are relatively rare.

At the end of the day, though if you like RPG's and MMO's, and are curious about this game than give it a go, and if you do please roll on a Heavy or Standard server, and not one of the full ones!

A big problem, beside hackers, for mmorpgs is that of size. Some fans want things to be endless (lots of stories, etc.), others like myself want quality over quantity. I believe only small things can be great, and that trying to make things collosally good is almost impossible, though it's not, Bioware has a lot of work ahead to pull off such a rare feet.

    I'm excited for the future.

Patch 1.2 also brought quite a lot new features like legacy. I love the familytree, it's maybe fluff to some people, but for a roleplayer this is a really nice addition. I think Bioware is doing a great job with the updates and patches. They solved so many bugs already and in 4 months they also gave us a lot of new features and content. Oh..and I love the surprise event they gave us this week. No one knew about it, but suddenly a rakghoul plague started in Tatooine. I think this is the best way I've seen an event worked out in any MMO I have played until now. Bioware real spends attention to details (not only in this event but overall). Expand

Leveling is much better than WoW, the voice work is fantastic and really tells the story well. It's nice to know why I'm killing a bad guy for a change (still have no idea what Illidan ever did to me....). On hitting 50 (max level), I wanted to see another characters story arc, rather than strengthen my character; when I finished leveling in WoW, I was sick of leveling. The stories and voice work are the really strong points; if these points, or Star Wars itself, aren't particularly interesting to you, you aren't going to enjoy this game. If you love arena in WoW, it doesn't exist in SWTOR.

There are quite a few comments regarding PvP imbalance. Just like every other game ever with PvP. The warzones are similar to battlegrounds in WoW, and they seem fine to me. One major benefit is that there is a warzone type which accommodates battles against the same faction, which really helps queue times.

The flashpoints (think instances) are fine, nothing special. Bosses are generally a little simple in mechanics, but nothing terrible. Haven't tried the raids.

I really feel that this is a good starting point, and it depends where they go with it from here. WoW certainly is more polished, but content has generally been in decline (honestly, we got 2.5 tiers of raiding in the whole of Cata....Firelands was too small to be a whole tier). If content keeps up in SWTOR, and they keep polishing, then it will really be a valid WoW killer. At the end of the day, as long as they are constantly working to make the game better, and they keep content coming out often enough that I'm not bored, I don't see me going back to WoW.

There are a few things I'm worried about. The game takes surprisingly good hardware to run well (Tom's Hardware did a review in Beta which covered this well); this means for me that I have very long load screens, but nothing I can't accept. However, if this means that people with new computers that don't have at least mid range discrete graphics can't play properly, that could have an impact on subs, which of course effects the whole player base. Also, the crew skills (crafting system) and GTN (AH) are bad. Just bad. Removing the requirement that I sit and watch my toon craft is a plus, but it doesn't make the system fun. Presently, I see no real reason to craft at all (unless you enjoy crafting in and of itself). You can easily do without the small advantages that crafting gives you while leveling, and you aren't going to get rich crafting (you will actually get quite poor). The GTN is a big part of this, but both systems are lacking; having said that, I'm not sure how much most players will mind, I'm looking at this from the perspective of someone who hit the gold cap in both WoTLK and Cata.

I played vanilla WOW and can remember that the state of issues people had were similar at the time but perhaps not judged so harshly due to it's innovation. SWTOR while not necessarily innovative appeals to me more than other MMO's mostly because it is a sci-fi universe and I find myself tired of the Sword & Sorcery fantasy settings brought forward in other recent MMO's. I feel I should give SWTOR a 10 to counteract all the 0's that have been given that seem unduly harsh, but I'm giving it a 9 instead because I do feel there are some issues that need to be addressed, such as PVP balance before this game deserves it. Best MMO there is at the moment. Immersive, choice-oriented and successfully manages to make you feel important and part of the world. Some minor niggles: no LFG window or dungeon finder equivalent, very limited varieties of armour, cannot sell the exact same armour cross-faction without it changing to something else. But as far as MMOs go, it'll be incredibly hard to upstage this one.

Such a polarizing game. Seems people either love it or hate it. Guess it all depends what sort of research you did on the game as it was going through development, where you set your expectations, and how it all panned out in the end.

Personally, I am having a blast. Bioware is doing what it does best: telling a story. Doing it's best to inject flavour and character in every interaction, every character, every choice. And most often, it succeeds. It's a bonus that I can bring my friends along for the ride, and interact with other like minded people. It uses a solid bedrock of tried and true MMO mechanics and uses this base to launch you into an immersion factor unparalleled by any other game in the genre.. if you let it.

I have delighted with friends going through flashpoints, and seeing the conflicting choices happen between light and dark side choices. I have laughed and cried and different situations and dialogue choices that have arisen through my own story experiences. Even though I have been mainly a Republic Lightside player, I have chosen dark side because I could NOT let the evil do'er live, he/she was so despicable. Heck, I have hated myself for being good, as well: during one particular mission, I was forced to choose between saving a character I had really grown to like, or save 300 other innocent lives. It was torture, and I loved it.

Everything else seems to offer you choices to let you take a break and breath from the story. PvP, Flashpoints, Space Combat, Crafting, all of it is good, none of it is exceptional, there is plenty of improvement needed.. and it will be done.

And the game isn't flawless, bug-wise, but Bioware is listening, things are being fixed, one just has to be patient.

If you are looking for story, if you are looking for an awesome game to play with or chatting to a few friends about your experiences, and if you've enjoyed past Bioware games, then this for you. If you are expecting something ground breaking in other ways, if you are looking for the next Major League Gaming competitive PvP game, if you power level without stopping to appreciate the moment.. then this game probably isn't for you.

Awesome game, 9/10 simply because nothing is ever perfect, there are improvements to be made.

At launch wow did not have raids, they did not have heroic dungeons, nor did they have battlegrounds. And if you played at launch, you will remember the insqne queue times, the terrible server lag, all the loot bugs, and many of the things that plague new mmos.

Star wars is no different. They shipped the game with some graphical bugs, quest completion issues, a few buggy raid fights, and sound issues. But being objective, the launch of this game has gone far smoother than qny other I have played. Minor release issues aside, this game ia very good. It has multiple raids, many 4 man dungeons, three warzones, a solid gear system in place, and an entire planet dedicated to end game content (though buggy in its current incantation). To biowares defense, they have quickly addressed and eliminated many release bugs already. The story immersion is incredible, the graphics are pretty detailed for mmo standards, the sound is classic star wars, and there is substantial end game content.. The game really doesn't do anything new (outside of the great VO), but much like wow did, it does the standard mmo elements better than any other game on the market. No game launches without bugs, but if this one had, it would easily be 10/10. Give it a try, objectively.

I will compare it to WoW for a second, because I know everyone is, in saying that the sense of community is not as strong as in WoW. However, unlike WoW, you don't ever really feel like you're "grinding" for levels because the story has players so immersed. I think the level of immersion is actually part of the cause for why there isn't such a strong community feeling. This isn't to say that people don't communicate or help each other out, it's more in the "feeling" of community. Everyone is pretty friendly, but you do get the occasional troll. PvP needs to be fixed; the only division between levels for warzones is that level 50s can't queue with those level 49 and below...but a level 10 is still going to have to face level 49s. That's a problem. Companions are an awesome addition which make going out to complete missions a little easier. Deciding which companion to summon can really change the strategy involved when soloing a rare spawn elite you come across. You can "court" your companion, as long as they're a courtable apecies and you're the opposite sex. That adds just a little more to the RPG feel. If you really like immersing stories which are guided by your decisions sort of like Skyrim, but are on the MMO scale, then this game is for you. I'm not saying that what we got at publication, or what they have patched it up to now is bad. Its not. the problem with SWTOR is what it could and should have been. What it failed to be. The budget was there but the vision was lacking. For those of us who saw the first Star Wars movie in the cinema back in 1975 (?) This IP was a life changing influence in the same way as Tolkein was in the field of literature. We all know how George Lucas had a gift for failing with Star Wars, for wrecking things, or rubbing the luster off it. But Bioware had a good track record of doing Star Wars well. KOTOR 1 and 2 were great. Mass Effect, though a unique IP showed that the Canadians were capable of great things here. So WTF happened? My guess is they played it way too safe, and tried to copy WOW as closely as possible with a few fatal dashes too many of Bioware's legendary (And in this case diasterous) 'STORYTELLING'.! Hey guys a little advice after the barn has burned down: GAMERS WANT TO WRITE THEIR OWN FACKING STORIES! We don't want to get dragged around like marionettes on strings you pull, or strapped into chairs of the scenic railroads you lay for us! We want to be the heroes of the story in our own terms! SWTOR could have ignored WOW. It could have got a few ideas from EVE and X3, heaps of inspiration from the best of the movies and then a glorious freewheeling sandbox in a galaxy, where you can play any of dozens of races, on dozens of planets explore the galaxy and pursue any numbers of skill sets developing the kind of hero you wanted to be. Luke Skywalker had a thing for droids remember! We could have all been free to develop all sorts of fun non-combat skills for the purposes of ROLE PLAYING. Eventually, after many adventures in many places the players might even have got introduced to the force, or its dark side and found the option to choose to become a Jedi knight or a Sithe warrior. Sadly that was all to 1995 for Bioware. This game offered ZERO EXPLORATION. ZERO meaningful race choice, near ZILCH in character development. Near NOTHING in player choice. You start off affiliated to one of two factions, and well on your way to mastery of skills which in the lore of Star Wars were supposed to be rare and special. Bioware designed a game, and planned for a situation where there would be literally millions of high level Jedi's and Sithe running around! A mad dream that has nothing to do with Star Wars lore. Built without vision, this game fails to impress where it should. It suffers a Bioware malaise: No sense of place. Each area you go to is a sterile set, where you plod about waiting to be cued on a conveyer belt to your next fixed 'plot point'. You don't become a bounty hunter or anything in this game by trial and error, by wandering about and earning the membership rights to a skill set. Instead you make a single choice with character creation that then becomes a RAILROAD OF SUBSEQUENT non choices. Which can also be described, when you think about it (as I so capably do) THE ANTITHESIS OF ROLEPLAYING. What some of the targets of these reviews need to understand is that I was designing games at a professional level at the age of 16, back in 1982. I'm not blowing bubbles out of my arse. The game still scores 6/10 because it has plenty of fun content. You can't burn $300 million without getting nice assets, animations, sincere efforts, good voice acting and a lot of good content, which this game DOES offer. It's pretty well a game everyone should look into when it goes free to play. it may even get patched up enough to earn a green score. I hope so. But it will always be too late. SWTOR cannot now become the masterpiece it should have been. When they set aside the budget for this game, it was a grand chance to be daring and to redefine role playing forever. What we got instead was a boring version of WOW in space. Lost in Space, where is that robot waving its arms crying "warning, warning"? TOO LATE. Expand

Worst MMORPG in existence. I love Star Wars, but for the sake of your wallet do not buy this game. If you're a hardcore/competitive player – whether you PvP, PvE, or both – just do not buy this game. It's the worst.

I'm a big fan of the two Knights of the Old Republic games for which this game is a loose sequel. I have to admit I was worried that the Old Republic wouldn't live up to the achievement of the original games. Though TOR isn't as groundbreaking as its predecessors, it is still a damn good game. The sheer size of the game gives you the freedom to go anywhere you would want to as a Star Wars fan, and the missions that accompany this universe are actually quite addictive rather than repetitive. The combat is still pretty good, and it far outranks the button mashing fps games of today's world. The plots have an epic feel to them, however, much like the companions, they lack the personal feel that was present in the KOTOR games. Besides that point though, I have to say that Bioware have still got it, and TOR is an impressive and inventive game. However, I believe it would have fared better as just an RPG, rather than an MMORPG, as it would have allowed more room for the personal points of KOTOR to be integrated into it. Expand

Dude, they took the WORST aspects of WoW and cloned them. lol The retarded juiciness of the WoW art/story style at least made that game enjoyable. Let me tell you something, a basic quest chain in WoW had more story then this entire game. ALL OF MY BUDDIES and I played this game, every class. Empire are the only enjoyable storylines (as far as the enjoyment goes...). Republic is BLAND. It is serious trash. It is BORING. 2 of 3 of us played Republic preferrably... could not stand any of the storylines. Consulars are notoriously craptastic and just painful to sit through. Nothing happens in that story. The game just follows the same pattern all the way through... generic and unoriginal. #1: IT'S NOT KOTOR PEOPLE. If you played Knights Of The Old Republic you most likely loved the sh@# out of it. Knights 2, sadly was rushed in development by corporate greed and had content chopped out and rushed to market (which explains a lot) they cut an entire planet for godsake. But still... decent and good game. This is nothing like those 2, at all. It is a sh#$ WoW clone, yet not fun. WoW was somewhat fun, this isn't fun at all. The dialogue/options and effects do not exist. 3 options all same result. No dynamics no change no effects. 0, I've played to 50, me and friends have palyed different classes. We've been subscribers. COMBAT IS TERRIBLE. Bland and so unimaginitive. You WILL BE BORED. Hit buttons for few more points of damage. Slowing skill. Ranged skill. The End. Tons of skills doing the same sh#&. No combos. You will see vendors everywhere, tons of gear, but that doesn't make a game. Who cares. Item customization? Modification? KOTOR2 had it for real. This game does not, it's yet again, a mask of something bland and terrible. Nuff said. Worst part of game: REPUBLIC AND EMPIRE ARE THE SAME THING. They mirror each other in classes and skils and skill-trees. SAME stuff, different names. The names and icons ar ethe difference. Period. The mark of horribleness. SPACE COMBAT? Rail shooter. You don't fly freely. Missions repeated. Shoot things poping in on screen. Character CUSTOM? Everythings human: Chiss: Blue Human Miraluka: Green Human Cyborg: Human with 1 additional custom option, (metalic crap on face). TwiLek: (almost exclusively Republic unless unlocked, only closest thing to an alien). Rhatataki: White Human etc. etc. No wookiees, no rodians, no trandoshans. Nothing. Companions, 1 at a time only. Trade professions, done almost all exclusively for credit-cost and by companions in backround of game. Same with crafting. 5 possible companions on each tpy eof class you pick (total): most all classes you pick, between 4 and 5 companions (all) are boring as hell. Flat personalities and wooden. Aliens add difference and can be fun, but almost none have personalities anyway. Vette was fun on my Sith Warrior. That was IT. Out of the other 15-20 companions on other classes I experienced, they're boring. You get a buncha dudes or you get what looks like underaged girls with poor voice acting (who all sound identical....) for romance options. Generic. Everyhting is mirrored in this game. COMPANION QUESTS? Terrible... mostly brief talking chains. My system is a few years dated... but still runs intense games well. This game... the WORST game for running on a system. Even with LOWEST GRAPHICS POSSIBLE this game lagged and glitched like Hell. Every time I naturally exit this game I get Windows Error Reports. Other times, my computer will hang on the desktop for literally 10 minutes.... NOT OTHER GAME DOES THESE THINGS. It's intoleralbe. My buddy has a max-performance system for gaming.... he gets stuttering all the same regardless. As most wil tell you too, with GRAPHICS, Highest and Lowest almost don't matter. My comp runs Highest settings amost exactly the same as the lowest.... program issues. Frankly the grpahics and LOOK of the game is awful and dated. The 'doo-dadds' to put in the world, like misc. objects like consols and trees... etc... few exist. You see Computer Consols stuck everywhere and htere's only 3 different types. There's computer consols on bridges for godsake... it's just a bunch of designer flunkees out of college rushing thorugh on a timeline with no care for quality. Push Product make reslease-date, charge-for or patch rest. 1 year passes, nothing changes either. Cartel Market. Real money/points store... there's not even anything in it. Different colors of same objects you get in-game. Or just junk like unlockable storage spaces.... you can unlock a playable Race for both sides for any class (yes, even if you subscribe, you are restricted as to the races to classes that you can play still). And that CARTAL DOLLAR SIGN IS RAMMED DOWN YOUR F#$#%NG THROAT. It's all over your windows and HUD. Expand

If you liked WoW but want something a little different with heavy emphasis on story this game is it. Companions are great, group dialog is cool (need more of it), solo story is great. Needs better character creation/options, fully fleshed out space combat/quests, and no queues. The real test will be if BW can continue to dole out content that keeps the end game going for PVE players (same with any other MMO, I don't PVP so I don't know what the state of that is).

There are people a vested interest in wanting the game to fail. Most of them have even touched the game. It has been rated the most helpful review. The majority of his review is full of information that is factually untrue about the game. A lot of the negative reviews on here are like that. I'm not saying all of them are, but when you've played game and, and you read some of the negative reviews, you can tell who genuinely didn't like the game, and who has obviously never touched the game and is just trolling everyone.

This is one of the best polished MMO's, especially at launch, available. At first I was a little skeptical about the 'theme park' type setup of the game, but there is enough depth (especially as you level) that it is well worth it. If you have any interest in the Star Wars world, or just in a polished and well put together MMO, this should be your next purchase.

After reading Esiasch's entry i looked at user review for several games. I believe in freedom of speech and that everyone is entitled to their opinion. However even really good games that i enjoyed and are actually well-made game still have a percentage of zero or troll reviews SO IVE ATTEMPTED TO RESPOND to these with my views on various complaints made about the game. SWTOR isn't perfect by any means but that doesn't mean it a bad or sub-standard game. I'll compare to the other available options first. Wow is a game i played for six months on a private SERVER mostly to get used to MMO system , PVE/PVP ETC. Up until this point i was an XBOX gamer and a kotor fan so i was expecting kotor 3 on the xbox. I enjoyed my time playing WOW BUT I WOULDN'T ACTUALLY pay a subscription for it ( check my previous review for a full explanation of WOW AND SWTOR ) . The other mmo's on the market that I would consider are LOTRO and Rift both seem similar to WOW but hold no interest for me. The next expansion of WOW is something i might go back to but that not coming to next year and it going to even longer on a private server. that leaves me with diablo 3 and guild wars 2, im sure they're good in their own way but it made me realise that SWTOR was the only MMO for me. So ive been playing SWTOR since release i have a lvl 50 bounty hunter and 3 other alts on the dark side. I'm going to the republic side once ive lvled my alts. I found the game enjoyable and entertaining but there several features that considered standard that are missing in the game. The two most notable omissions are a looking for group system for group quests and a guild bank. Both these are crucial for an MMO'S success as they aid the commuinty socialization and development. Some reviews have also suggested that they are going to wait until patch 1.2 because this is a live beta test. This is mostly true because honestly the game wasn't complete on launch. They only had a very small release window because of BF3, MW3 and SKYRIMM in november and mass effect 3 in march along with diablo 3 and guilds wars 2. So bioware had to release in december because the only other viable option would be summer 2012. The game had already been pushed back several times and it simply wasn't fair on the substantial SWTOR community that been waiting patiently for the games release. In addition Bioware alienated large sections of the market by not releasing in Asia or Australia and not developing the game for mac's. Mac users have pc emulation bootcamp and parallel so that solves that problem and SWTOR releases the game in Australia in march. It is also also true that there are graphical and performance issues even on high-end machines. I just don't go to the imperial fleet (The main dark side base ) in the daytime cos my framerate drops and it makes running about doing trading and training difficult. This also also affects the open pvp ilum as to many players affect framerates. Everywhere else is fine with glitches and bugs in the odd place but these dont really affect gameplay. There were numerous other bugs on release but most of these have been fixed. The linear aspect or lack of sandbox has also been criticized. Other mmo's have the appearance of go anywhere do anything but this is an illusion. Most mmo zones have a certain level and if you are gathering this narrows your scope so you usually end up going to the same places depending on your profession. If ur lvling as well this creates a lot of grind . The companion system of profession missions largely eliminates the grind leaving you to venture forth on the planets. The linear part actually helps here as your class quests suggests area's appropriate to your level with the option of additional heroic group quests. Most of the planets are huge and offer a reasonable amount of choice, for example i been to tattooine 3 times but i've only been to half of the zones. There is also the fact that the republic side have there own planets and area's on later planets and this is only at launch with more planets and zones to be added. Flashpoints are instanced heroic quests with more of a story element these are very enjoyable. I've been concentrating on lvling my alts and their professions so i haven't raided or done operations. These are still a bit buggy so i will wait until the next patch for that. PVP is fun and more balanced cos of 50 only war zones and space combat is a fun mini-game. Anyone buying this game knows they're getting a bioware product which has standard mmo framework with mass effect's UI and the SWTOR IP. So all these haters and trolls shouldn't complain cos it's more or less advertised as is and does what it says on the tin. It definitely offers 3 months of solid gameplay Expand

But it was still fun to play, and made you think using your brain, unlike the brainless games being made nowdays. Between all the adrenaline online FPS games, and the hidden objects games, it's clear to me that gaming companies, just want your money, so they box up cheap buggy software with pretty graphics as fast as they can throw it out on the shelves for someone to get caught up in their advertising web of deceit. That's all they want is our money, and once they have it, they don't care what we get in return. Often times buying a new game requires a hardware updgrade of some sort. For once I wish I had my own gaming company so I could show this world how a good game should be. I would make all you stupid gaming companies pay for all the crappy games I've bought. 3000ad is on the top of that list for lousy gaming companies. As far as Knights of the old Republic, I only wish I had a decent computer to play their newest release, not to mention the Jedi Knight game they came out with, I've owned em all up till the time they got greedy, and started making games that require new computers to play. Besides, some of our favorite games are linear, take just about every FPS in history), the PVP is fun, but the faction unbalance leads to a lot of games of Huttball which I actually love so its a win for me (people say it is unbalanced, but dogs wolf, cows moo and MMO players yell 'The PVP is unbalanced!'). All that said this is NOT that WOW killer that people have been calling it, I say that because there has never even been a game that matched WOW so bringing down the giant will take many, many improvements. SWTOR has gone above and beyond with their game. the people that are detractors are foolish in their attempt to destroy something that far surpasses all other MMOS on the market currently.

Many People say that the end game doesn't have much contenet and PVP is unbalanced. Im not much of a PVPer but keep in mind this game is still very new. WOW had even more problems than SWTOR has when it first came out and some say it still does. The thing about a game this large trying to target so many audiences is not everyone will like it. I for one love this game and all it offers in the Endgame material. I know it has a lot of room to improve on and Bioware will never rest untill the game is perfect. So SWTOR is one of the Best games i have ever played. And i encourage anyone who is on the fence to just try it. If you don't like it don't pay for it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yes, this game takes many mechanics and game styles from WoW. But this game does some things differently that make it a truly great modern MMO. I have reached max level and played through multiple characters stories, and this alone is a reason to come back to the game. They have also included some great starting Warzones, and Ops that provide a decent amount of Endgame content, although they could definitely improve in this aspect. With the recent addition of Rated Warzones it has put in even more replay value that will keep me subscribed for months to come. With the addition of a new Dynamic event later this month, and 1.4 which will provide a new Warzone, 10 new Space Missions, and a new Op... I think Bioware has finally realized that they need to release content more often to keep a strong player base and they will be doing just that in the months to come. If you are looking for KOTOR 3, I guess you could give this a go. It does feature story elements from the past KOTOR games and *SPOILER* You will come across Revan *SPOILER*. That being said, this is an MMO and it is not specifically tailored to be a story driven game, although when compared to other MMO's this certainly has the best story out of any that I have played. The Dialogues and cutscenes make it feel as if you make a difference in your story and it allows for so many possibilities later on in your story line. But the one thing that this game has perfected... is the crafting system! You get companions as you level which allow you to send them out on missions collecting mats, and once they have collected the mats, they can be sent to craft your items. This means that you can be crafting while in a Flashpoint or Warzone rather than having to sit at your trainer using the Anvil to craft new gear. You can have a total of 6 companions and can send 5 out at a time at lvl 50 which allows for some serious crafting and profit!! Overall I think that all MMO players need to give this game a shot. Yes in the first few months it was slow with patches and content releases, but Bioware has kicked it into gear and are finally responding to the community!

Overall this game has great story elements and well balanced class PvP. They could use a few more Warzones and Ops and they definitely need a better World PvP system. Other than that I have no complaints and will stay subbed for a loooong time!

Hope to see you in Game!!!

Basically it is a one way dead end kinda road with limited replayability or reasons to revisit old places. It is box inside boxes inside boxes. It offers very little new to the mmo"rpg" genre. It does not even have day/night cycles and you can not swim either. The only thing this game lacks is an auto play button so it can play it self because it is that boring. I fail to see how they can call it an rp game really. And it comes from the company that have made legendary rp games in the past. Seriously those that play it is hard core star wars fans that just have to be in a star wars game. Even the mobs are just spread out in the combat zones in what often seems random spots they been dropped down with limited to no movement at all. Just waiting for a hero to come and kill their lifeless virtual bodies. The only moment this game is mildly good is when you are in the storyline quest it feels good but when you are not then it feels like an empty shell! Sadly the good gets burried under the extensive amounts of meaningless and dull quests you have to do in between. You are a powerful sith badass but you are super dependant on a babysither to nurse you around. WHAT?!? Solo without companion is almost impossible so there goes the beeing a powerful sith immersion. Darth Vader is not angry he is disapointed.. I really cant express exactly how much I dispise this game and I was super exited about it. I even bought the col edition so the jokes on me. LOL Never have I been more disappointed with a game and I can not recommend anyone to try it at all. I wished I could give you 300 million reasons to like this game but I cant. Mediocre storyline is what it does best but there is alot of alternatives that are far better.. Now all this is my opinion of course if you think this is the **** then that is just fine. Good luck with that ! :D Expand

Character customization is pretty good. Not as good as CoH, but substantially better than other MMOs on the market. Classes seem for the most part balanced in PvP situations. World environments look pretty good as the developers obviously put a lot of attention into that.

The only drawback to this game is that it can get a little repetitive. Anyone who gives this game a rating of 6 or less obviously has never played the game before.

Some anti-social people find it easier to open up online but I find that it is easier to deal with a lonely, anxious, introverted person face to face than a similar person whose online anonymity has gifted him with zero inhibition, inevitably leading to the unveiling of 15 years worth of ridicule and sexual frustration blossoming into a perfect **** storm of **** For instance, in my case, the act of speaking with another human being is brought to a frenzied but rigorously polite dance of anxious madness due to the fact that I am shy and unable to break the colloquial barriers that plague my kind. This leaves little reason for me to vent my frustrations on others as the origin of the fault is obviously my own. As for "the others", the fault is only obviously their own to everyone else. To them, the problem is external --the world is out to get them and they create a hierarchy of self wherein their misery must become a communal one. For these homuculi of the conscious self, the only thing keeping them from being a douche in person is the recognition of the inevitable possibility that the person with whom they are speaking may be pushed into a causal chain that ends in their [the douche] being crippled. Since about a quarter of the people I have ever interacted with in online RPG's fall under the latter classicication, I avoid them like the plague as they leave me pondering things like: "why are they here" as opposed to the more productive "why am I here".

As such, I absolutely LOVE THIS GAME!!! I finally get to have one of my beloved Bioware single player RPG'S share some of the only qualities of online RPG's that I find desirable such as ever expanding content, appropriate vastness of environment, and the occasional option to share the experience with friends (well of course I have friends...what? did you think I was an **** or something?). I adored the first two games in this series (especially the 2nd but only with the extra content. Otherwise the ending feels like a breezy summer morning stiffy followed by a close encounter with the Lorena Bobbitt kind) and the writing here rivals almost anything I came across in either of those games. The plot may be linear, but let's face it, every other Bioware narrative is just as linear but they put more effort into masking the fact with the clever illusion of openness. In conclusion I will say only this: if you find that you can relate to any of what has been said, you should probably buy this game...but don't try to add me to your group or anything. The evolutionary needs of this primate are accounted for.

The theme of the game is more mature than that of other MMO's and the players themselves are more mature. PvP balancing is something that needs to be looked into, but that is something that can be fixed in a patch. I've encountered very few bugs, and have had no problems with performance playing this game. Overall I 'm rating this game a 10. After taking a 3-week break for midterm exams, I finally finished my Bounty Hunter's story line, and I feel I have experienced enough of the game to write a realistic review (although I can't really discuss PVP if that's what you're into, since my computer isn't good enough to handle it). That point actually brings my to my first gripe in that I think Bioware hyped the low graphics requirements, as compared to WoW, a little too much. This game barely works on my computer. I can do flashpoints but that's about the extent to which I can go. Other than that there are fairly frequent graphics bugs to be encountered, as well as some gameplay glitches that are in a very speedy ironing-out process at the moment. That at least is appreciated. Now that I've got my bigger gripes out of the way, let me just state this point-blank. I love this game. It is fantastic. Looking past the bugs, if you are a gamer who appreciates good story, good character development, and a fleshed-out world, this game delivers like no other ever has. It scratched both my open-world Bethesda and my MMO itches simultaneously. How did it do this? This game, if you are into PVE stuff, is essentially 8 single-player games with streamlined and infused multiplayer functionality. You can go through all you adventures solo easily if you want to, and have a great time doing it. Or at any point you can group up with people for questing, flashpoints, PvP, you name it. Bioware has also taken a lot of the grind out of the MMO experience. I felt like I was playing for the story, and that I actually cared about the questing between the beginning and level cap, instead of racing to get to 85 as I have done so often in WoW. Crafting is also much more fun, and much faster than WoW's. Again, very much appreciated. Once you do finish the main questline, however, there isn't yet a whole lot to do, but Bioware is working on that and what they do have in terms of endgame PVE material is at least solid. Overall, what I just can't get over is how much more mature the stories feel in this game compared to, in fact, *any* of the Star Wars movies. So that said, if you are interested in a incredibly well fleshed-out Star Wars adventure and story experience with MMO integration, than I cannot recommend this game highly enough. For those of you who are just interested in PvPing and racing your way to the end, perhaps not so much. I do feel this game is better than the 5.8 it currently has however, it just might not be for everybody. Expand

The voice acting is top notch, so I actually stop to listen to the quest, unlike other games where I ignore the wall of text and just click "accept". Story is the key, bread and butter, whatever you want to call it for SWTOR. Every class as a storyline consisting of a prologue and 3 chapters, starting at level 1 and ending at 50. Each planet has a main storyline with many having a Bonus Series for when you gain higher levels. These Bonus Series are not rehashing existing areas or quests, but takes you to new areas on the planet you visited at a previous time. Once you get your ship, you have optional Space Missions (with dailies) you can do if you want a change of pace from questing. The companions are more than just "pets" as they can fill various roles and each have their own personalities (with quest lines). Example of this is we lost our healer to a disconnect during a flashpoint, but we used a healer companion and finished the flashpoint (instance). Boss fights are more than just "don't stand in the fire, Tank n Spank". One flashpoint actually doesn't have bosses (cept 1 at the end). The game is rich in lore for those that played Knights of the Old Republic, but for those that didn't you still can enjoy all the lore regardless. Explorer types can be rewarded by finding datacrons scattered on every planet, each granting a permanent bonus. Whenever you find a key location, datacron or kill a new beast for the 1st time you unlock a codex entry granting you xp and a lore entry.

PvP'ers will be happy with the warzones as they offer experience, credits and bonus depending on how you perform. Do better in PvP you get more rewards at the end of the match. Plus PvP items can be acquired as early as 20 and can be vendored if you no longer want them. No more outgrown items gathering dust in your banks! A lot of the gear is customazable, so that the days of wearing some ugly item just because of the stats are gone. As you level up just put in higher modifications and the armor/damage of the items scales up. Yes this also includes lightsaber and blaster bolt colors as well.

Crafting does not require you stand in front of a table making X bracers for an hour to skill up. Simply send out companions on crew skill tasks to gather mats or craft for you while you continue... whatever you want to continue. You can gather in the field if you run across mats, but it's a nice option that if you are missing a specific mat, you can simply send a crewman out and (after a time delay) you get your mats.

A fantastic game that you must play to believe. One of the rare times that a game has actually lived up to the hype.

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.

I wound up bailing out on Star Wars: The Old Republic well before hitting the level cap, but not before digging into it more so than any other MMO I've played. Even if it is an unhappy marriage between two wildly different game types, the fact that it kept me hooked for so long at least counts for something.
