SW:TOR is a great game, period. I think many of the people who are knocking it because of the similarities to WoW need some perspective. WoW was not the first MMORPG. In the same way, SW:TOR has taken/copied what was good about WoW and improved upon it. People buy and play new games because they are better versions of what came before. Millions of people bought COD:MW3 because it was BETTER than Black Ops and MW2, not because it revolutionized the FPS genre. SW:TOR will not change the basic format of MMOs, but it is simply a better overall experience than what you find in WoW. The number one and most noticeable improvement is the addition of an actual story. You really care about your character in SW:TOR in a way you never do in WoW. Your character feels like an actual person with a real personality, and it makes the entire world that much more engaging. Sure, there are many improvements that they can and will make to polish the game even further, but this must be the most complete experience ever delivered by a brand new MMO. If you enjoy MMOs or Star Wars or both, it is in your best interest to give this game a shot. Expand

It has absolutely NO similarity to World of Warcraft whatsoever. If anyone is complaining that this game is a disappointment then this game may not be the game for them. For Star Wars fans like myself, I would absolutely recommend this game for you. People are obviously going to troll about a game that is similar in any fashion to another game, that is the way of life. People do not know how to review because they have nothing better to do besides write something completely untrue. This game is definitely new, I'll admit that there are a few flaws at the moment since this is a brand new MMORPG, but I expect these issues to be fixed within a few weeks or a few months. People who are not patient are of course going to troll on this website. To be honest, I think that Metacritic is the only website that there is so many negative reviews of this game. Is there some sort of rebellion towards good video games or something? Because I do not understand why there such a ridiculous number of negative reviews on GOOD GAMES.
Some advice to the trolls that do not agree with this argument that I am trying to write about, GO OUTSIDE. Get a life please because I am sick of hearing these stupid reviews because I know for a fact that half of you guys have never even played the game and are writing from your **** I just made this account today because I had enough with these stupid reviews! Star Wars: The Old Republic is a must buy of this years MMORPG's of 2012 so please get it if you have the chance.

I saw one idiot (Thorn14) saying that the PvP warzone huttball should be a blank canvas but isnt due to the air jets in the middle area of the warzone. Hey, buddy, the person can be shot in the totally wrong direction too!! Go figure that....
Bunch of WoW fanboys are also complaining about the graphics of the game (MagusGrandios, especially.) Hey, genius-boys, the dev, BioWare MADE IT THAT WAY FOR A REASON. That was so that it didnt require you going out and spending $$$ on new computers or hardware in general to be able to run it! Fools!
A bunch of WoW fanboys are **** and moaning about this being a 'carbon copy of World of Warcraft' (too many to name) This is a typical fanboy response when their game is threatened by a product heads and tails BETTER than their game. Pay them no heed. this game is virtually NOTHING like WoW, and I know because I've played it, too.

Those are just a few of the trollers. now that some of them are dealt with, Let me tell you from a true perspective (and yes, I have played MMORPG's for years) that the only major issue I have with SW:TOR is the fact that the republic doesnt have more interesting aliens to play. For all the fanboys of WoW again pissing and moaning their collective heads off about the Empire not having multiple races... THEY'RE THE EMPIRE!! THEY'RE A XENOPHOBIC SOCIETY THAT WOULDN'T LET THE ALIENS INTO ANY PART OF SOCIETY THAT MEANT A DAMN! WANNA PLAY A MMORPG WHERE YOU'RE A SLAVE?? DIDNT THINK SO!! Sorry, it just irks the hell outta me when I see obvious trolls trolling something so epic as SW:TOR. And let there be trolls to this post. It just proves my point.

Despite that slight issue, the graphics are workable on almost every system someone could have. (PC system obviously) The worlds are really well worked, with random convo's and people walking around giving it almost a feeling of past, present, and future in and about the main areas. The crafting was another stroke of genius. I played games where crafting was tedious boring work. BW made it so I can go on questing doing whatever I pleased and have my minions do the gathering, and crafting for me. Then when I have the item, I can choose to reverse engineer it to attempt to learn a better way to make the same item. Great work, BW. I am extremely pleased. In closing, BioWare came through strong with SW:TOR. As I said, trolls will try to do their best to troll a game that threatens theirs. But in all honesty, this is a game that you'd be crazy not to check out, especially if you're an MMORPG fan, as I am. Hope this review cleared up some of the trolls idiotic spewing. (now I need to get my brain bleached to try to get some of the retarded bile that they wrote out of my head)

Sadly, this game is dying. I haven't played for over a month and didn't renew my sub. There is a lack of people playing which led to hours where I played alone. Group quests were skipped as there was nobody to quest with. As a game, Star Wars is very, very good and I stand by my initial score. It doesn't deserve the bad press but had some VERY tough competition with Tera and Guild Wars 2 on the horizon. Will I play it again? Yes if it becomes FTP. Group content so far is excellent, with a decent mix of objectives and difficulty. Exploring is lots of fun, with strong incentives for players to explore thoroughly. Crafting is fun, without being a monotonous time and resources sink. Early items are actually useful as you level.

Companions are useful, with a nice selection of options and abilities for all the various classes. Each has their own interesting story and mechanics.

Basic combat and skill system very similar to WoW, which isn't a bad thing for the most part. A few small oversights in regards to early gaps in characters skills. IE, a Sith Juggernaut doesn't have a taunt ability early on, but the Inquisitors first companion does. Not a game breaker, just a slight irritation.

Leveling curve is just about right, the story keeps things moving, without excessive downtime between major quest groups. All that without even mentioning the deep lore well they get with Star Wars. Solid 9/10, would go 9.5 if possible. Keep it up BioWare!

Perhaps a bit linear- in fairness most RPGs are linear, and stories tend to be linear.

If you like having a huge world where you can just do anything (like kill 12 boars in a snowy place, or in a forest, or in the sea for some reason) you'll love GW2 instead which is free roaming mediocrity. I expected this game to be a mostly single player story with the option to multi play- and got exactly what I wanted.

Admittedly I was at best sceptical over Bioware's announcement - back in 2008 - that they would henceforth be continuing the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic franchise (which I adore) as an MMO. Also, the communities in-game and over the internet attract the worst examples of gamer.

Yet when I entered the world of SW:TOR, many of my reservations were put aside. The game fits right in with the Star Wars RPG standard set by KOTOR, with extraordinary voice acting and an engaging story from the get go. The dialogue mechanics in particular make grouping up a rather fun experience. This was all to be expected from Bioware and the RPG elements are where this game really shines above the competition (MMO or otherwise). The combat is a definite improvement over KOTOR 2, which could be rather sluggishness and frankly quite boring at times. In SWTOR the hotkey-based combat mechanics add more strategy and depth, yet perfectly accessible. It's not innovative in itself but is a great solution for this particular franchise.

Gameplay outside of the story is of the familiar MMO archetype, and is also for the most part optional. If you don't like PvP, grouping, you can easily avoid these elements and still have a huge game to enjoy. But you can't ignore the fact that SW:TOR is an MMO. Server queues, lag, and less than optimal framerate (with respect the the graphical fidelity) make sure of this. Oh, and yeah a monthly fee. Yet it's worth tolerating this to enjoy the larger game that SW:TOR is, larger perhaps because of the fact that it is an MMO...

4- great stories: all quests are voice acted. this forces you to slow down and actually participate in the story. while i didn't see the significance of such a decision initially, after a few days of play, i get it. it breaks up the questing so you don't feel like you just running on a tread mill of "go here, do this". and you have options that allow you to customize your interaction in a manner consistent with your character concept. some folks have complained that wanting to get light/dark points forces you to answer a certain way, but they're missing the point. you have ample opportunity for light/dark points. you don't HAVE to respond in a way that will get you min/maxed. so yes, you DO have a choice about your interaction. 5- crafting and missions are pretty cool. you can send your minions off to do things for you and secure resources that way. 6- the minions are great. they make a significant contribution to your efforts, allowing you to do things you could not other do. they also have favor points you can build up to increase their loyalty and effectiveness. there are even romantic options with some of them and, according to bioware, more to come. 7- the light/dark points add an extra layer to an already mult-layered game. there are multiple ways to advance and you can open some pretty interesting dialogue options that have very interesting outcomes. -- thus decreasing the overall "linear" feel of the game.
8- a good main story line that really contributes to a feeling of growth in your character. the story lines are class specific so you get to really fill out a role and philosophy.
9- there's pvp. in areas and servers so you can take your pick.
10- it's a fairly open world with lots of exploration opportunities. all in all, i feel like this is a game that contributes a good bit to the mmo genre and is presents a truly enjoyable experience on the level of wow or coh/v. good job bioware.

It is wrong to compare it to any other game. Swtor is unique in many ways mostly the depth of the story that they made for each class as well as the amazing work that was done on the music that surrounds the game everywhere you go. The game is very stable the population on the servers is exactly what it should be the speed that you get a group for an instance or pvp is really good.
It is a game for almost everyone i could say although i cant talk about the end game as i havent reached that level yet. each class has a very distinctive role in groups in PVE or PVP environment. all in all i highly recommend the game to solo or group players to star wars and non star wars fans. i do not recommend it to people who will want an improved version of wow or EQ or anything in that respect. SWTOR is Unique in many more ways than one its an Epic production from Bioware and Lucas arts, its not here to change the genre its here to make players HAPPY !

PvP is so-so, it has the potential to be really fun but there's some balance issues and queue issues holding it back for me. Hopefully fixed over time.

WONDERFUL visuals and aesthetics again, let me stress that. It's so nice to have detail and cloth physics and elaborate armor in an MMO after so long. Very easy to make attractive characters, for those who only want to make fat people and space boogey men: Oh well, boohoo for you.

In the end, I actually think it's a fairly so-so MMO (but there are aprox ZERO good true MMOs on the market currently), but as a good co-op KOTOR like, it's very engaging, very detailed, very fun.

Never have I played an mmo at launch with as FEW bugs and problems as SWTOR. I say few because there are some minor ones, which will no doubt be ironed out with patches.

You people on metacritic are ridiculous, I made an account just to make that point. It's like every game that comes out now that is "too similar" to another game you just give a 0. In WoW simple questing PvE could get tough with many patrolling mobs but in SWTOR it just doesn't feel alive, mobs just stand around and wait for an ambush. The still mobs can get patched though and it's not that big of deal when you experience all the other satisfying aspects. Leveling, gear collecting and the voice-acting are very satisfying. The games current state only holds mechanical mounts which is dull, imo. Organic mounts could very well occur in the future though. I've played WoW since its release in 2004 and overall I think I'll stick with SWTOR with hopes of good content patches, expansions, gameplay tweaks etc etc Expand

This is the first MMO ive ever played where I paid attention to the plot and understood what was going on, i usually skip all the texts and just rush to max level, but with swtor i find myself taking my time and listening to every word spoken. The games combat system is the standard MMO formula but with Auto-attack removed and smooth animations for all your abilities making fights visually beautiful and very intense. The crafting system is a joy to level up, you dont actually have to do ANY gathering or crafting to max out your crafting profession, that is all handled by your crew of companions, and not only is it mindlessly simple to level up but you get items that are genuinely useful ( you WILL use the items you make, and NOT just max level items like WOW). For example my Synthweaver (Makes Force user armor) has provided about 70% of the armor for myself and a friend i am leveling with, i can honestly say ive never used a single item from crafting in wow other than engineering bombs and trinkets. This game is great to play with friends but its totally playable start to finish solo, the game provides you with several companions throughout the game that range from Tanks to healers and even Ranged or melee dps so even healers can efficiently level up, In fact this is the first games that healers have an upper hand when leveling, With my healer im able to solo around 2 or 3 elites of equal level at a time with my tank companion, while my DPS (/w healer comp) can only take one at a time (two with CC). It should also be noted almost every class has a spec for tanking and/or healing as well as a DPS spec. I could go on and on about all the small details that have made me fall in love but i feel im already rambling on so ill end it here. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do overall like this game and could come to love it and find while this game has some flaws e.g. the lack of major end game content, some serious bugs, some class imbalances and too many servers being drafted in too quickly that need to be quickly for this game to realise its full potential the game remains true to what bioware said it would be , a mmmorpg with heavily involved story and they have however this may not be to some peoples tastes and that is ok as for some just want to get on levelling the character that they have made with the array of different and interesting companions . However for those that choose to step back and analyse the game fully the story element is very good with 8 differentiating class quests that weave through some famous and not so famous planets. The quests on those planets that everybody has access to are reasonably good with some interesting variations but in some places becoming too grind like however for the overall majority that is not the case. PVP people are very divided about this and once again it comes down to personal preference but if you enjoy being able to go in the wow way with brackets then you will be disappointed the bracket only encompasses level 50's. However in 10-49 this does add a level of competition and there is a reasonable level of fairness which people at higher levels do not like their characters at level 49 being killed by a level 10. Also the pvp maps are similar of that to wow which is not particularly surprising as they came out with videos about it months before launch. Instances when you get in them are very good with some nice star wars music , wit and smooth combat mechanics ( well now smooth with decreased ability delay) and the added story lines making them feel more epic not just like large group quests as well as having some nice graphical features like the asteroid launcher in Hammer station and if you stop and look at it properly you will see they have not just spent all the money on voice acting which seems to be the belief from many low scoring reviews. Graphics are good but again personal taste in the type of graphics you want making a difference with some uncalled for reactions about the stylised realism that relates to the kotor days which I like. The sound features and music are also excellent and really take you into the universe. This immersion aspect has been bashed beyond belief and im not sure why because having been in wow and lotro this is the first time i have been able to want to see what happens to my character and this keeps you playing. Endgame not good but not a game breaker as I can make new chars with the 8 class stories and two factions on different planets and quest lines. The endgame raids are extremely difficult to get people for and loot bugs and boss bugs to provide frustration this then needs to be fixed and hopefully new endgame content in 1.2 will provide more entertainment but people seem to put reviews out based solely on endgame which is only one of the features you need to consider. Guild features are severely lacking and inhibit the feeling of community which you need but is apparent elsewhere throughout with the large numbers of group quests which you can mostly get a group for. I hope that this game realises its full potential and moves from a good game to a great game and with high profile releases such as Tera and GW2 coming out . Also I hope that people will give this game some time and seemingly trying to put off people by over exaggerating and that also goes both ways for those who give it 10's as it is not the best game ever but with time it could be. I just hope the unjustified level of vitriol and praise will dies down with a lot of low + high reviews at this early stage to allow the game to develop Expand

Bear in mind however, this is an MMO and as such there are concessions made graphically compared to dedicated single player games. There are a good number of planets to visit, some quite large. PVP is fun although limited to 3 scenarios(called warzones, one of which allows for intra-faction combat) and a small amount of world PvP (which always suffers when population distributions are unbalanced) due to the young age of the game.
It also has PvE dungeons and raids (flash points and operations respectively) although again, the number is currently small.

As with most MMO's the amount of endgame content increases with each major patch, however to call it's release sparse is misguided. The amount of endgame content is small compared only to established long term MMO's, specifically World of Warcraft.

The game shines in it's storylines, the voice acting makes questing quite enjoyable and most quests consist of going to places and finding things or people rather than "kill X of Y" which mostly appears in bonus quests, with occasional exceptions. The class storylines are suberb, a real evolution of the genre. As it is possible to level through pvp and a simple, starfox-esque space shooter mini-game there is a great replayability to the game as it is possible skip entire planets non-class quest lines and do them on a seperate alt. Completionists and explorers are also rewarded with datacrons in hard to reach locations providing permanent (small) stat-boosts provided they can be found.

The game is very star wars, players travel between planets interacting with large varieties of characters, they have space ships and build up a crew of loyal 'companions' who can be used to provide combat support in a similar way to the 'pets' of other games, perform crafting activities and even be sent away to sell all your vendor thrash when the inventory is getting full.

There is, of course, room for improvement and ample room for expansion. The space shooter is very simple and could do with more missions, and additional end-game and group content is, as always, high on the list of player demands. The main turn off about the game is the official forums, which remind me all too much of the Mos Eisley Cantina and is infested with people who by turns criticise the game for being either too much or not enough like world of warcraft. Occasionally both at the same time.

I think this game would be great for people who like star wars or like MMO's, however if you're tired of the tropes of the genre(cooldown management, the Tank,Healer DPS triumvirate etc.) you may find it lacking in innovation. Hardcore MMO players who like to blast through content without experiencing it may also find it a bit on the easy side.

My recommendation is trust NO User/Customer Ratings/Reviews (good or bad) and use only Reputable Critics that have a long standing in the gaming industry. Yes, they could be paid to lie too, but they have better accountability and can be more easily prosecuted if they lie. >SWTOR was made to be different than other MMORPGs by making story-line one of the highlights of the game. Voice acting goes a very long way in making a person feel a story is real, or cheesy. For me, one who likes a good story, the voice acting is top notch in SWTOR compared to other games and made me feel a part of the Star Wars world. >YOU feel more apart of the Star Wars world due to the story, but the story is not etched in stone. The story is based on choices you make in conversations you have with a multitude of characters you encounter. This allows you to become the character you envision and gives a stronger connection to that character's story. >COMPANIONS in SWTOR actually can help you complete quests by fighting by your side to help kill the enemies! They also allow for different story lines to emerge for your character. You form a relationship (which can be friendly or mean, romantic or hated) with your companion too, thus adding more attachment to the world you are in. You can order your companions to do work for you (create items or find materials/items on their own small missions) when you are doing other quests without them. Each character type has their own set of 5 unique companions. >OTHER games in the genre that I have played have given me a lot of fun, but over time they started getting away from an adult atmosphere and consistently increasing content that was goofy, cutesy, off the wall, catering to younger gamers, and specific cultural groups. However, SWTOR does not give me any of that immature and out of place feel. Even though the Star Wars franchise has a multitude of young fans, this game plays on a young adult to adult level story line and the people I usually run across are mature adults. >WHEN you create a character you choose which server you want to play on. The list of servers you choose from tell you a general population of players on that server. There are a lot of servers and the population will read either Light, Standard, or Heavy. CHOOSE a HEAVY server! I highly recommend Heavy (or at least Standard) because even if you like to be a loner, being on a Heavy server will not bother you once you learn how to ignore people through the settings options; and loners may find out that they actually like the multi-player aspect, which then being on a heavy server would be important since you currently cannot transfer characters to other servers. >I HAVE 9 characters, with my highest level character being level 40 (current max. is level 50). I will be playing at least a few more months before all my characters are maxed out on level and then will be able to experience more of the high end content (or lack of that I have read about). The game has already made major additions to the game since I have been playing, recently adding the legacy feature which is for higher level characters. As with all MMORPGs, updates and expansions are happening on a regular basis with new fun content added regularly. So, meanwhile I am enjoying the game and feel the money I have spent has been more than worthwhile. My recommendation is to try all the 8 different classes and enjoy each of their unique story lines to get the most out of the game. >GRAPHICS are not top notch. I love great visual productions in games, t.v., and movies, and SWTOR does not go to extremes to get the most high end visual effects possible in the current video game market. I found this is common in MMORPGs and it may be because of the high amount of people playing the game online. However, the content and story lines of the game totally make up for my love of peak performance graphics. Graphics on SWTOR I would rate about 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. >IF you really want to know all the features the game has, go to the SWTOR website to see all the features the game offers. >IN CONCLUSION, this game was in development for years before its release (Dec/2011) and it shows. The depth in all areas is well thought out and well done. The Star Wars franchise is huge and they have used their many resources to create a game that is very much polished and high quality. This game stands apart from other MMORPGs because of the emphasis on story which allows a gamer to feel a stronger connection to their character, the Star Wars universe, and the game itself. Regardless of negative points and/or reviews, this game IS a High Quality game due to the depth of the game and the emphasis of story that has been well developed. Expand

This game is a prison. Its somewhat addictive, but not enough to keep me away for whole weeks while still subscribing. Before they did the server swaps, the game was a ghost town. Now the servers have pops akin to what a medium pop on the old 50+ server system had.

The main character storyline is good most of the time, and your choices do mean something. But the main story is too few and far between. The planet stories can be okay, but more often than not its bad. Sometimes, like Imperial Taris, its a sort of "anything you can do I can do better" sort of thing, which was really lame. The side quests can be cool, but usually set you up for some disappointment. The companion stories are all usually very cool, but a lot of content was seemingly cut and you can not go on their adventures. Its always a matter of "I have to do this alone."

The main story is the only thing I find enjoyable about the game, and yet one must wade through tons of sub-par content to get there. This makes the game a massive time sink. The developers intentionally forced people who enjoy a standard fair game to play with MMO diehards, WoW 'heretics' who wanted something better.

I do play MMOs, too, and have gotten to endgame PvE in WoW a few times (though I tend to prefer PvP), but this was much the same monotony from WoW. This is really EA's fault for allowing the rebel WoW community to dictate how the game was made, and yet the WoW crowd wanted something better instead of a carbon copy.

The game was better in Beta. None of the beta testers were complaining as far as I saw. The game was significantly difficult, yet people enjoyed the pace of progress. We had some disappointments, like design story decisions on the planet Taris. And then right before the game released, they changed how PvE worked. No longer hard and few fights, but lots of boring ones. Endless trash mobs instead of stuff that was fun to fight. The game changed from being a hero to being a jogger, trying to get through areas as fast as possible.

Anyway, the game is now a smoldering ruin. The cash shop model is very bad, especially the unfairly priced stuff like 'pvp tickets'. The game may be worth $20 for the game and a free month, just to see one storyline (which you may accomplish if you're dedicated). The game is boring and repetitive after your first through playthroughs, but it has its moments.

PvP is good if you're in to that, but most people aren't and utterly stink at it. The 50+ stuff is extremely gear based, which defeats all semblance of fun for anyone not geared out.

Haven't played the newest stuff, but before the expansion, the endgame content was severely lacking. Raids were short but too hard for the average player, flashpoints use the same tilesets from the earlier flashpoints (its like they assumed nobody would play the earlier ones).

All in all, the game seems like it might have changed direction in developement, and certainly did after its initial financial crisis.

The writing is better than your standard MMO, but they are a little below the quality of our favorite Star Wars RPG franchise. The stories for each class are very entertaining in their own right. Don't listen when people tell you that the Agent is the best story in the game or that the Consular story is a snoozefest. It's all opinion and different people will enjoy different things. Now on to gameplay. You're probably going to what a mid range machine to get enjoyment out of this game. I run 8GB of DDR2 RAM with a dual core CPU and a GTX 620 graphics card. A tad dated but I can run most settings on high. Except for shadows. I turn shadows off on every MMO I play simply because it is such a huge drain on processes and disabling them gives a massive performance boost. The enviroments which you will be running around in are very detailed and fun to look at. Except Tattoine. That place is mostly sand, so not much going on there. ToR goes for a more realistic look compared to MMO's such as WoW which are more cartoony. Persoanlly I prefer the realistic style, but your mileage may vary. Speeder training has been brought down to level 15 and makes running around between misssions so much faster. This was a complaint brought up by players as it used to be level 25, 10 levels after you get your starship. Doesn't make much sense, huh? Well, BioWare listened! There is also the Legacy system now. Through this system you can purchase character specific perks such as XP boosts as well as unlock things for all of your characters account wide. For the roleplayers you can also assemble your various characters that you have made into a family tree within your legacy. Now your Sith Warrior can have that Jedi son he's always wanted! There are also bind to legacy items now, so once you get a character to 50 you can gear out your next ones so that they fly through the beginning content. End game there is PvP, daily missions, and Operations (better known as Raids to the WoW crowd) so you will always have something to do once you reach the level cap. All in all the game is solid, but not perfect. If you want an MMO with voice acting, great story, and solid gameplay then give The Old Republic a shot! Expand

I love this game so much. Let me say first, I played WoW for a bit when it came out, but never really got into it. So I'm pretty much a total MMORPG newbie. But 2 weeks ago I gave The Old Republic finally a try, and ever since then I'm having a hard time explaining to my girlfriend why all she hears from my side of the room are *woosh* *woosh* sounds (that's supposed to be a lightsaber sound

It 'feels' like Star Wars having similar atmospheres to KOTOR etc, helped by most planets being well designed and unique from eachother. It is not an elitist docuhe bag fest like WoW.

Bad - Role play is still not as strong as a single player, offline game, as with all MMO's. Graphics aren't great.

Verdict - if you love Star Wars and particularly the KOTOR games, you will love this. The best MMO out there by a long way.

Yes it might be a minor reason, but to me it broke all immersion and attachment to the game. I couldn't be the character I wanted to be....and this is a MMORPG!

I severely dislike the FTP model used in SWTOR, with free players having ridiculous restrictions.

I have played other FTP games such as DCUO, which were a lot of fun, and ultimately let you play how you wanted. Paying for things was optional if you wanted the extra stuff. In SWTOR however, I feel like they only give you access to half the game.

Very, very disappointed. Bioware/EA, whoever is responsible, needs to sort stuff out.

I should know better with an EA game.

There were numerous features lacking or underdeveloped such as auction sorting, group matching, and chat options. These oversights are inexcusable in my opinion, because they have long been implemented in other MMOs, especially WoW, and since SW:TOR seems to copy so much else from that game, they should have done a little more stealing and at least had a decent auction house and chat system. On top of that, the character creation is pretty lousy with very few customization options for an MMO--especially if you don't want your character to look silly. I did however like that the racial bonuses are pretty much just cosmetic, so you don't have to choose between the race with the best stats and the one you want to play for aesthetic or role-play reasons. Where the game really shines is in its fully-voiced quest dialogue and relatively-strong storylines, which do a decent job of making your actions seem significant. However this becomes time-consuming after awhile--especially when you are re-running instances or playing a second character--and I felt that, in the end, Bioware had not done such a good job of blending their signature singleplayer RPG dialogue/story with the demands of an MMO. I played for a couple months and then quit, having already leveled 2 characters and gotten bored. Hopefully it has improved a lot since then, but even as a big Star Wars and Bioware fan, I don't miss it enough to give it a second try. Expand

Space combat is a nice throwback to rebel assault - great game. Although I would like to see something a bit deeper - maybe something closer to a starfox feel, but there are plans to improve it at the moment.
Like most popular new games there are a lot of negative comments out there. I think this is common everywhere. Reading some of the critic reviews will give you a better insight if this game is for you or not.

The game is designed to be savored and enjoyed, not rushed through. Of course you will have problems finding groups if you have rushed forward through PUG groups and gotten to a point to where your gear completely sucks. You have to take time to farm rep, lightside/darkside points and commendations if you want to be abe to compete later on.

It's designed where backtracking and building your character up is absolutely essential and quite enjoyable. It's old school RPG gameplay mixed with an MMO environment that gradually builds as your character does.

Take time and enjoy the game, don't rush it, make the most of all the content, in the end it pays off ALOT. Most MMO's don't payoff until you get into big groups, Star Wars TOR pays off constantly and is enjoyable for every type of gamer.

It's a melding of casual and hardcore structure that until this point all other MMO's have failed to combine. It's isn't super easy and at the same time isn't extremely difficult, teamwork and strategy can make just as much difference as stats and gear.

The balance is strong with this one.

The story line is amazing and I have had 0 problems with graphics or slow down. To be fair though, the chat system is not as good as I think it could be and there is no online talking chat service available, players instead opt for other chat options... I prefer to just type but I see the fun in talking with buddies while playing...
Finally the side games... there are 3 different PVP games that are played and I have not seen mentioned anywhere. One is like a football game where players get a ball and try to score while the other team tries to stop u. One is a capture the flag style game, and the final is a break through walls game while the other team tries to stop u. All are fun.
If you just want a game to kick back to and have a good time this game is for u. If you want to lvl up and become the strongest jedi in the universe, this is it. If u r looking for something like WoW, this is not it. The WoW game has NOTHING of the depth or story line this does. This is also easy to navigate in and UNDERSTAND what quest you are on, what you are doing, and where to go next (With thrown in side quests and some fun crafting options)

They've come to identify with their captors, and the idea of another company coming along and creating something better than the company they're currently attached to is just downright frightening.

Star Wars Galaxies was run by SOE; the same disaster of a group that handled DCUO and a number of other fail-sauce MMO's. SWG was a solid first shot, but fell apart as soon as they introduced the Jedi without any proper counter-balanced class.

Now, does this game take a lot of what's right with WoW and do it? Sure it does. Name a single MMO that has come out in the past 7 years that hasn't borrowed from WoW in some form or fashion.

Then you get the whiners that are complaining about the instancing of zones. Instanced zones means more stable servers, less crashing, less disconnects. As Martha Stewart would say, "It's a good thing!"

The truth about SWTOR is that this game is wicked good. The graphics on a good video card look fantastic. If you're playing on some crap rig with less than a GTX 4xx then you're missing out. The game is far beyond what WoW is, by a long shot. If you can't find something to like about this game, you're going in with a bias. Period.

Top notch MMO, the culmination of the last 10 years of the genre with the addition of fully voiced branching path storylines and quests. Impossible to go back to any other MMO and the lame quest text boxes after playing SW:TOR. Multiple characters over level 30 (one 50) and still cannot get enough. The bugs will be ironed out, and already new content is up on the test server.

With the exception of Space Combat being so generic, this is a fantastic game! Though similar in its core to World of Warcraft, I actually care about the storyline. In WoW I was gone after 1 month of play from boredom which I don't foresee here. Hopefully, Space will be expanded upon so that it's closer to Star Wars Galaxies. Unless there is a game for this in particular I'm unaware of?

Don't get me wrong. There are flaws. The UI is my biggest complain for being non-customizable. The gameplay itself is really great. My main character is a smuggler (sawbones), and I have to say that this character is the most fun I've had playing an MMO... ever! Very utilitarian and very entertaining. She brings a lot of utility to groups with crowd control, group stealth, interrupts and stuns, not to mention the heals and damage, all of which she is quite adept at. Solo can be a challenge, but it just takes some strategy and good decisions when choosing companions.

I haven't been this drawn to a game since the early days of Everquest back in 1999. I've actually stayed up too late, and been tempted to play hooky form work for this, which is something I haven't done in a long long time for a video game.

The announcment of patch 1.2, coming in early April, which addresses the UI configurability issue lets me bump this up from an 8 to a 9. I'd give it a 10 but there are still some strange things in the game that can occiasionally break the immersion (like my companions staying in the same place on my ship, saying the same stale sayings over and over, while they are supposed to be out doing crew skills!).

Pros: SWTOR is a very fun and refreshing look from other MMO's. Huge game for a launch mmo, nice graphics, the largest voice-over in mmo history, space ship missions, refreshingly different PvP zones and LIGHTSABERS!! Cons: feels like a single player mmo, still some bugs that need to be ironed out, needs more social tools like flashpoint finder and heroic mission finder.

This is a bad thing for those who hate wow, but if you're like me and played wow a lot, especially in the first 3-4 years, well then you will feel right at home. It also follows the holy trinity of needing a tank, dps, and healers for taking on group content. The character creation is meh, they definitely need to get some less than humanoid races on there to mix it up a bit. The combat is cool, and even though the animations aren't as fluid as a fighting or adventure game, they're not nearly as bad as what many other people on MC are saying, and I give kudos to Bioware for attempting to make combat a bit more cinematic. The planets are all very well done, some are much bigger than others, but each one has a distinct feel, my only gripe is that BW seems to have split each planet up into sides, one for the imps and the other for the pubs so there was very little interaction as I leveled. Character creation is more than WoW but less than, say, Aion... and though at first I didn't like it, I quickly noticed there is a great deal of variety in male characters, anyway, in the game. The UI is really barely adequate and if not for some of the other features, it would have dragged this rating lower. No macros, no addons, no ability to move anything.
PvE combat is rather satisfying to me because instead of taking on one mob at a time, you routinely fight 3-5 mobs, including packs with tougher mobs in them. This lends to the feeling of a more "epic" experience, especially with the companion.
PvP is good and getting better every patch. Skill really does matter (I did a premade of level 20-40s, max level or 43 and only 1 50 pug on our side and we took out one of the 'better" 50 Empire premades on our server). The Warfronts are very well designed, but Ilum (World Objective PvP Area) is not and needs a total redesign (which it is getting tomorrow)
Questing really is fun, but don't skip the dialogue. Get into the story. If you don't find your class quest interesting, switch characters. Leveling is easy and relatively painless. The actual quest types are the same as in most every MMO before it, but the fact that most areas you travel to have special "bonus" kill quests which you can do if you want to is nice (or skip them like I did sometimes). The instances are well done and enjoyable.
Endgame is sparse right now as far as PvE goes, with very little raiding. That isn't an issue for me as I'm still enjoying leveling etc.
    To cut to the chase:
Innovative(Not necessarily unique though): Crafting, Companions, Space Combat Minigame, Questing System
Good: Warfront design, class design, general combat.
Average: Most everything else other than...

Unlike other mmos that I have played this has got to be the most engaging game out of them all, the effort Bioware has put into the voice acting and story is simply fantastic! I was also pleased that the game is not a complete grind fest like past games I have played and as a result I can casually quest without having to kill millions upon millions of enemies to level up (this always put me off continuing my subscription with other games).

The first flashpoint (The Black Talon) that I played was absolutely amazing, I couldn't believe how good it was being thrown head first into this frantic mission with three other eager comrades being met fierce battles and frequent group conversations, I actually had shivers down my spine the entire time. Once I completed this I was completely sold by the game.

However as with any newly release mmo it is certainly not perfect. The first issue that I encountered (a personal opinion) was the simplistic character creation process. I thought that this was pretty shocking as I knew that there would be very little differences with my character and other players of the same class and low and behold I was right! What were you thinking Bioware? I just think it would be awesome to be able to run around and see lots of crazy looking toons running around the planets. PVP is also in dire need of some TLC as there are no level brackets and the ability delays do prove pretty annoying when you are trying to play at a competitive level. However I'm sure that this will be addressed in later patches so I can cope with this for the time being. As a result of there being no level brackets I've been forced to wait until I reach level 50 before I can start PVPing because at the moment if you're not 50, the 50's you are playing against will completely destroy you! Another issue that I personally have been having problems with is the fact that it can sometimes be rather difficult trying to find members to form a group for Heroic quests, while not impossible it can take a while. I think this will sort itself out eventually when Bioware removes the server instances so all players play in the same one *fingers crossed*.

While these issues are rather annoying they still aren't enough to prevent me from continuing on with the game. If you're still on the fence about whether to buy it or not I say go for, it's still in its early stages and it's only going to get even better with time!

This game shines as a beacon of what is possible in an MMO, and with a little more work on Bioware's part will grow to be the best MMO of all time. The efforts that Bioware have put into the post launch era bode well for the future. They are continuing to roll out new content possibly faster than the bulk of the playerbase can cope with. Of course, no pace of release would satisfy the more vocal detractors.

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.

I wound up bailing out on Star Wars: The Old Republic well before hitting the level cap, but not before digging into it more so than any other MMO I've played. Even if it is an unhappy marriage between two wildly different game types, the fact that it kept me hooked for so long at least counts for something.

A good game. It pays excellent homage to the film series (even though it's set before the movies), and is a really solid MMO.
