Another example of terrible Bioware development. -The worst writing you could imagine, quests, class stories make no sense whatsoever
-Complete lack of class balance, no combat log to hide that flaw
-Terrible performance -There's nothing unique about races you can choose from: there's human, human with implants, green human, blue human, red human, bald and pale human, human with horns.

-There's no point in playing on pvp servers, because each zone is designed in such way that you will almost never meet players from the other faction while questing.
-The game was supposed to be an innovation, refresing breeze in MMOs. Instead, this is just another WoW clone, with NOTHING new or creative.

The character creation screen is very limited, everything is pre-set. Want to re-shape that terrible nose you have? Nope, sorry! Pick between these 12 pre-set noses & get on with it! The amount of races is also lacking. We're supposed to be in the Star Wars universe but everyone pretty much looks the same. Questing is where SWTOR shines the most, simply because of the voice overs & cutscenes. Having said that, you'll still find yourself going over to "kill X amount & collect Y amount" & it can get abit tendious after a while. This is the first MMO i have played where it felt like i was playing a single player game. Everything is on rails & it's very linear , the game practically holds your hand. The planets are rather terrible, there wasn't many i enjoyed at all, most of them feel "lifeless" & "bland" . For some strange reason, there is not enough ambient music/ enviormental sound in the game whilst you're questing & exploring the planets. Most of the time you will here your footsteps & the noise coming from your speeder. Majority of the enemies stand in a pack of 3 or 4 waiting to be killled. You can only explore so much because there are exhaustion zones, if you conintue to go through them you will die. Everytime you want to go to a new planet you're met with loading screens & copy/paste space stations. All of this leaves the player detatched from the world they're playing in. The combat isn't really exciting. It does the job, but it's nothing we haven't seen before. Ability delay still exists even though it was mentioned in BETA & after the game was released. Although it's not the worse combat i have experienced, it is not the best. The best way to describe it would be "clunky". The companion system is poor. Everyone gets their own healer, dps & tank companion, leading to people not needing others to help them. Most of the 2-man "heroics" & some of the 4-man i could solo myself simply because of my companion. I did not need another player to help me, nor did they need me. Everyone is soloing most of the things on their own. Companions craft for you. You send them on "missions" to collect or craft items, leaving the player feel like they're doing nothing. I like to craft my own things, i like to see my character craft, instead my companions do all the work.

I could go on & on. PvP is nothing but a stun-fest, open world is non-existent, my first open world PvP encounter was at level 42. The endgame PvP planet is a mess & Bioware has admitted it. End game PvE is terribly easy.

Most of what SWTOR has to offer is average, leading to an average MMO & a boring game. The only thing worth note is the cutscenes & voiceovers.

That said leveling up your first character is kind of fun, if you like the age old Kill 30 stormtroopers then click 3 crates, then return to guy who gave you quest. You say you saved his farm or whatever, but you know all the npc's re-spawned and he secretly sends every person he meets to his farm, and that you are probably the 10th person to save his farm that day. This is my first MMO. I was drawn to this game by a close friend and also because I am a huge KOTOR fan and love Bioware. Over the last few months, I have spent about 250 hours playing SWTOR. My accomplishments: I finished the Empire sniper campaign, leveled to 50, joined a guild, sampled PVP and raids and have leveled a Jedi Sage to 37 so I have a good feel for both sides of the campaign and for endgame. Overall, this game has brilliant moments and is quite addictive. However, it is a massive grind, especially at the endgame. I came for the KOTOR and Bioware story and elements of KOTOR are definitely there in every story. The choices, the plot twists, the great music, and the fascinating character development. For instance, the Sniper story itself is one of the most incredible storylines of any rpg game I have played and really shines. However, to get through the 12 or so hours of story content you have to log about 80 hours of quests that are all exactly the same. It's one of three possibilities: kill 10 grunts, smash 5 things, touch 5 things with a thing from your inventory. There is slight variation on some quests, such as Heroics or bonus quests, but generally even these are more of the same. Even in these special quests though, sometimes the stage 1 of a quest will be 'kill 10 imperial grunts' and stage 2 will be 'kill 20 imperial grunts'. Glad these were separated so I really feel I accomplished something! After a few hours of this, the quests, no matter how beautifully done, feel like a complete chore. It doesn't help that most of the mobs are the same across almost every planet. For instance, there must be 100 types of mobs that are humans with blasters or swords, with the name 'Imperial' crossed out and the word 'Cartel' or 'Thug' written in. The combat is also extremely formulaic. With hot keys I would just press '4,5,6,4,5,6,1,4,5,6' and by the time I had finished that sequence my companion and I had killed off all the mobs. It's very rare that a mob is actually challenging in that you need to change your repetitive hotkey strategy, and not just "A REALLY BIG THUG WITH LOTS OF HP'. Even the endgame raids, individual strategy is quite simple.

If PVE combat is dull, PVP combat is even duller and extremely frustrating. It is mostly an exercise in button spamming and whoever has best gear. The champion bag complaint is beaten to death so I will leave that be and focus on the mechanics themselves. For your first 30 hours or so of PVP after you get to 50, expect to lose 60-70% of your matches and get absolutely soul-crushed. As Republic you could easily lose 9 matches in a row and they won't even be close. You will be 3-shot by some classes. If you can get through this frustrating period, even once you start winning it is not even really enjoyable with the exception of the occasional close game.

All that being said, I still play this game and cautiously recommend it for the campaigns alone. It's amazingly addictive and there are a few really great things about it. The story, the space missions, the flashpoints (when you are not with a moronic healer and tank) and the beautifully crafted worlds are the high points. It feels like a chore though and you shouldn't pay $15 a month for this game as it stands now. Bioware is doing the best they can and patching constantly and adding new content, but it feels like a bandaid over much bigger issues. The main problem is the game mechanics, ie 95% of the game is you fighting either mobs or players and the fighting you can master after an hour. Once you figure out the three or four basic moves of your class it just becomes a Mavis Beacon hotkey typing game.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a major let down. The greatly hyped voice acting, cut-scenes, and story driven grind are not what they are cracked up to be, and the game fails to be as revolutionary as it originally claimed pre-release. First, let me start with character creation. You can choose one of two sides: Republic or Imperial. From here, you have to choose 1 of 4 classes: Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler and Trooper on the Republic side, and Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor, Imperial Agent, and Bounty Hunter on the Sith side. As you could imagine, every class has a similar counterpart on its opposing faction. From there, you pick a gender, race (which depends on your class choice), and then you can customize your facial features and body type. Customization is very limited: you must choose from a set of predetermined faces, scars, hair styles, etc. The races themselves are basically humans, with odd skin tones or maybe a few spikes/tentacles. You can't play a wookiee or really anything that isn't too different from Human (they even have a race called "Cyborg" which IS human but with various cybernetics on their face, as if this makes them a different species or something). So basically, in game, you look like everyone else. There isn't much different at all. Now, on to the great voice acting and cut-scenes. Every voice acted cut scene seems the same or at least very similar, and the animations of the characters aren't very intricate or exciting. In fact, they are clumsy and stale when they do move if at all. Watching these cut-scenes may be an upgrade from purely text-based quest givers, but sometimes you wish you didn't watch them: they are that boring and unimpressive. You just don't feel any more immersed because of these. The camera angle is also recycled throughout and remains stagnant in each scene-you never see your character in action apart from talking to the specific person. The animation quality lacks throughout combat and gameplay as well. Everything just seems to move awkwardly. The art style is okay, but nothing special. Sometimes you may question why they went for the awkward cartoon art style, but I would accept it in an MMO for the sake of latency in large battlefields (though other MMOs have proven that a higher quality graphics render can survive with massive amounts of people on screen). When you get to the action, you can't help but feel like you are playing WoW again, but without an "auto-attack" (though the replacement for this does not make it any superior). You use various skills and abilities unlocked by talking to a trainer, and these skills are largely "click on target, press button, wait for animations and damage to finish, move on to next ability or enemy" and it is extremely boring. In fact, much of the game resembles WoW in many aspects. As stated before, you unlock skills by talking to a trainer. You fight with stale abilities. You have your basic class archetypes: healer, tank, dps. For a game that was supposed to be so revolutionary, there is almost nothing new (save the dialogue/cut-scenes, but these aren't impressive as previously discussed). You do have a good/bad meter, much like those found in Kotor I and II, but they really don't make up for anything. Yeah, you can be a "good" sith or an "evil" jedi, but largely your faction is still the same along with your enemies and the game as if you played the typical good jedi and evil sith. Companions aren't that interesting either: they play much like pets in other MMOs, but they have back stories. I enjoy the space battles and the fact that you can own a starship, and that is probably one of the few reasons this game got a 4 instead of a 2 or 3 from me. I find the starship to be actually different, new, and fun, succeeding in being a revolutionary idea truly worthy of supporting and praising, as it has not been done in many other MMOs and still remains enjoyable, unlike the much-hyped voice acting. There are really no other qualities to redeem this game though, and it isn't fun. I wanted to stop playing in the starting zone in fact, but trudged on for God knows why. I've only really been impressed with Bioware for Kotor, and this game did not do anything to improve that mindset. They have lost their touch since those games, or maybe just fell behind and became irrelevant and outdated, and this game shows every bit of that. It is a stale, lifeless and all around poorly made relic of the past that doesn't fit well with new MMOs or even new games in general, and even the great classics of the past would mock it and shun it. Bioware just made a grab at the WoW and Star Wars audience, trying to get their money by shipping out an unimaginative game. I don't recommend it for anyone. Expand

If you're planing on trying this game out, try to memorize your first hours as well as possible. The game feels fantastic at the start, but it goes drastically quickly downhill. The starting area was a blast (For the Imperial Agent, atleast), but once you get to the second planet, it becomes repitive very fast. The only thing that kept me playing on the second planet was a quest line concerning the major character of the KOTOR games. If we're already at the setting; Despite being the most expensive game ever made, the world is as unchanging as possible. No matter what you do during your quest, they make little, but mostly no change to the world around you. The optimization is also bad. Despite not having great graphics, some place (Dormund Kaas wilderness, for example) stutter so much that you feel like you're playing Witcher 2 on Ultra graphics, but the graphics are still medium. The combat can be very unresponsive, both because of lag and bad coding. The dialogue the Mass Effect wheel choice system despite it not belonging in the Old Republic games completely. You can also exit dialogues anytime you want, which makes it feel like casualized "Ohh, I angered the character, let's push ESC and try another dialogue option.". It's obvious they made an "MMO" because of one reason: money. The multiplayer part is either bad or non-existent. And this is the point where we have to ask: Wouldn't have it been better if they made an RPG that would have worked and everyone anticipated instead of an MMO that turned out a financial disaster because the developers had no idea how to make an MMO? In fact, maybe a KOTOR3 wouldn't have worked, either. They completely raped the story of both KOTOR and KOTOR 2 and tried to make a contiunity to those despite the game being 300 years later after those games. About the Free to Play option. It's extremely restrictive, a lot more than, let's say, LOTRO. In fact, I could do more in the Free Trial version than I could in the Free to Play version (a monumental WTF, if you ask me.). The only exception is the fact that you can get to maximum level, but the repititveness makes work of it that you don't get there. Expand

I read the Star Wars The Old Republic: Revan book and I hope one day BioWare or LucasArts or someone else will make a game of it (just like they did with The Wither) SO basically it's a good game but I'm disappointed with the storyline if I think of this as a continuation of the KOTOR 2, but if it's not then the story is acceptable. It almost make syou wonder why they wouldn't simply make a single-player KotOR game.

The bad: Absolutely everything else. I would almost suggest buying this game just for the class storylines if each plot point weren't separated by hours of quest grinding. At first the "fully-voiced" dialogue (about half of which is alien language so you'll be reading most of the time anyway) will be cool, but very soon you'll find yourself skipping through it all because it all breaks down into "kill X number of these guys" or "collect X amount of these things". There's a shockingly small amount of content, which is unforgivable in a day and age where there's a plethora of other MMOs with at least twice the content out already. As of this writing there are exactly two lmax-level flashpoints (dungeons).

Of course there's PVP, which is fine, although again the options for warzones are meager and get boring very quickly.

In a nutshell, this game fails to make any MMO element worth the (as of right now) $20 pricetag of the game. If you personally don't mind endless hours of monotonous grinding, I can suggest this game for you. If not, I can't in good faith suggest you spend your time on this. You WILL be wondering, as you kill your 347th rakghoul, "why, WHY can't they just have removed all these MMO mainstays and allowed me to just play through the story?"

The obvious answer is "because no one would opt to pay $15/month when they could run through a class storyline in about 4 hours." And I don;t know about you, but that's not a good enough answer for me.

It's not a "WoW Clone" as some have suggested, this is an insult to the tired old World of Warcraft MMO. It's a game that had VAST amounts of potential, squandered away by greed and complacency.

Bottom line - I played this game for several months; the story/s and voice acting are the best in the business. But this/these great Star Wars stories are eclipsed by Bioware's and EA's money making scheme almost entirely. Story = 10; EA's money grab that is imposed on the ENTIRE design of the game = 0. I forgot to cancell my pre-order in the end but I put a lot of time into the early accessn the better part of 7 days or something.

    In Brief.

    1) It really is an unabashed WoW clone and it shows, the gameplay feels dated.

    2) Theres nothing specifically bad about the game but there is nothing outstanding either, leaving me indifferent to it.

    3) Storylines I tried thus far were poorly paced, dull and predictable. Infact the Bounty hunter one is full of cliches which would be tolerable if they were not such poor representations of the cliches in question. The great soundtrack is not even used to good effect building to dramatic or "tragic" events.

    4) Worlds feel dull and lifeless.

    5) Everything is on rails, areas have specific paths to your next goal and there is very little "getting off the beaten track" or exploring.

    6) Game engine is dated & fairly average, graphics only slightly better than KOTOR & KOTOR2 which are quite old games. This would not be such an issue if the gameplay was not so slow and boring.

    7) By level 10 in both Jedi knight & Bounty Hunter I was bored.

    8) pacing of the game is quite slow even for an MMO, they really want you to hang around and subscribe as long as possible.

    9) You could be forgiven for not realising Bioware made this game, it lacks polish particularly in the storytelling which is what Bioware games are famous for. Quite a dissapointing effort from one of my favourite studios. That said ME2 and DA2 were both had a similar lack of polish & care and i guess early signs that the quality control Bioware was once famous for was fading fast.

    10) there are several Free 2 Play MMO's using unknown IP's that I have enjoyed more than this.

I ended up selling my unopened box copy because the game is just plain boring.

Star Wars: The old Republic is Star Wars but mediocre, im not sure even going F2P can save it.

I was motivated to try it after it went F2P. After experiencing how heavy handed (and ridiculous) they are with what you can do as a F2P player I subscribed for a month. I admit it was hard for me at first because I played SWG Online on release and I kept comparing, I know they are different games but its still the same IP to me. Anyway, while it took some time - I warmed up to SWTOR. The plus side is the storyline which is quite enjoyable, and if you focus on that, it is worthwhile. Regretfully in the end I must say that the storyline is the only thing I enjoyed.

I suppose I should say I did not engage in PVP... I never do, in any MMO I've involved myself in, I generally avoid PVP whether SWG, WoW, EVE, LOTR, etc. Anyway, back to my cons on SWTOR. The space missions are entirely guided, you cannot really control your ship, and you'll find the map has only about 3 varieties, it got boring quickly. The environments are just boring and uninspired I really couldn't care what planet I was on. In most MMO's I can pick an area or world that I enjoyed. WoW - I loved Darkshore and Stranglethorn Vale (Before Cataclysm which I hated), SWG - Corellia... You get the drift..

One thing that really killed it for me was it did not allow me to play a middle ground Sith. At ALL times I was REQUIRED to play light or dark. Even some of my choices, while I thought were just good strategic choices, were considered evil, or good... seemed to me to be a massive hole in the storyline process, despite certain... revelations in the game that I won't mention . They further press this point in your equipment as certain items and relics can only be equipped if you are one side or the other... this was not how I wished to play my char, and yet was forced to do so I could equip certain items.

Other issues I had were minor but significant to me, like not being able to create my own waypoints on the map... Bioware's classic conversation selection was a killer for me too where your char does not say what you actually wish them to. I really mean this, you select the option for your char to say, "That doesn't work for me." and your char says, "You have failed me for the last time!" . I'm thinking... "waht?" Misspell on purpose.

After my month ran out I chose to transition back to F2P. I chose to do this because there were other games I wanted to play though I had intended to at some point come back and try other storylines, happily thinking I would again subscribe. By this time I was maybe level 47, had not finished the storyline yet. To my surprise the heavy handed status returned. Although I was considered "preferred status" I could no longer have a title, all my rested XP that I had saved up was removed, my Piloting lvl 3 skill was downgraded to level 2 (after putting down a lot of credits for an extra 10% speed oooooh... ) some other skills that I obtained and spent a lot of credits on were removed or downgraded. My purple items I had obtained... nope, you don't benefit from those enhancements anymore. Heck, I couldn't hide my helmet any longer. This was so over the top for me that I just detached from it, I uninstalled the game, and will never touch it again. Bottomline is if you are willing to suffer and persevere through the nonsense of F2P then you can enjoy the storyline. For me I won't come back because beyond the storyline its just uninspiring and the heavy handedness of their F2P/Subscription system is over the top.. This game could have been so much better. If I could, I would give the storyline a 10... but everything else a 0, so I've compromised and given a score of 2. It is storyline, and nothing more.

The companion you get is very annoying and you basically have to keep using him unless you want to get molested by the enemies in the game while not in a group of real people since the game is balanced around using your companion. It got better once you get to the first Flashpoints and group missions. The game started actually being fun after trudging trough the first 10 or so levels.

It was all good until I hit lvl 16 and Bioware/EA whatever decided to KEEP MY ACCOUNT HOSTAGE.
Now all I get when I try logging into my character is this line:

"To continue playing this character, you must validate an email address for your account. You may validate your email by visiting https://account.swtor.com/user/info."

It just takes you to your basic information page on swtor.com. No apparent place to to any kind of validating. My e-mail is already there and I have even bought stuff on the account while being registered with that e-mail. Inputting a different e-mail address sends this to the new e-mail address you use:

    Locrin:

"We have received your request to update your email address for the Star Warsâ„¢: The Old Republicâ„¢ website. To complete this request, simply click here to verify your email address.

Remember, if you have a linked EA account, it will be changed with the new email address."

Clicking the link in the mail only gives you this error: "An error has occurred.
Your email address could not be validated.

Please check the URL and try again."

And since I am not a monthly subscriber, but only a guy that sometimes use the real money market for the stuff I want I AM CUT OFF FROM ANY KIND OF CUSTOMER SUPPORT.

No, my hatred of TOR stems from the fact that bioware turned KOTOR, perhaps the most classic star wars series ever, into A **** MMO!! Instead of just giving us KOTOR3 like they SHOULD have, bioware instead opted for the crowd that would give them the most money.

Favorite story for me was both the Jedi Knight and Sith inquisitor. The Jedi Knights story was so good because it was a large scale threat you were dealing with which made every step more intense plus the companions for the Jedi Knight are so good, like Kira and Doc (tied 1st on my favorite companions list) because they were so well scripted. The Sith Inquisitors story i found was bad from level 1-15 because it was you just running small tasks, but at the end when yo met the ghost and he beat the hell out of you (not as bad as you think) it then starts to get interesting, but after chapter 1 when you start to bind with ghosts it to interesting not to play.
The only bad things i found in the game where some of the stories, like the bounty hunters, the dialog isn't that bad but the story all together just seemed a bit rushed (and in my option the Bounty hunter and smuggler should of had a faction of there own due to the fact that they are a neutral party) the only other story that i find the most boring is the Jedi Consular, it's so boring (i'm doing a fallen Jedi Consular and i'm dragging myself along because it feels that bland)

The combat is quite easy to learn, for starters i highly recommend you choose jedi since you can heal yourself.

I got to say that the some restrictions are unnecessary like why cant you say something in the forums without paying, and why are races restricted to f2p players compare to star trek online where you can choose so many races plus 3 payed ones(which is optional if you wanna get them)

But for the most part, the game is quite addictive.

(unnecessary) Even though im not the biggest star wars fan, I like it, but I hate when fanboys has to say stuff or just been critical annoying or else this franchise is in pretty trouble. But thats my opinion.

Poorly balanced, too easy to level in (casual play results in 50 in about 7 days of /played without ever being able to finish a single planet without drastically outleveling it.) The instances are fun in normal mode as you level, but nightmarishly badly balanced for class and performance in Hard mode. The PvP warzones are a joke, as there are only three and you have to do them over and over.

The latest patch just cements that this novice dev team really has no idea what makes an MMO work. Avoid this game if you're looking for a new MMO home. Enjoy the ride to 50 with each class as a single-player co-op game, and then put it away.

Not the worst but certainly not the best game out there. Take away the cutscenes and the voice acting and you have a standard MMO that seems to be missing some of the features expecting in an MMO coming out towards the end of 2011. Had this been a 2004 release it would have been a damn near excellent game, however, it follows the same route as all MMO's except this one is totally linear.

But for the most part you are alone and that's fine for a single player game. But SWTOR pretends to be an MMO.

It's clear that BW designed and built this game as a hybrid knockoff of WoW and it's own singleplayer games.

Also, it just seems that nothing you do in the SWTOR world really matters.
BW's almost doctrinal stance on the solo story design is a mistake. Their stance on solo gameplay as a whole, in an MMO, is a mistake. SWTOR's group content is INCONSEQUENTIAL. If I did 5 fp's total, that would be a lot. There is no need to do them. You do not need to do them to advance in any way. I made it to 50 on one toon and 20 on another in 30 days without them. You say I missed out on great gear??? Really and with what consequence? NONE! And I was constantly ahead of the leveling curve right up to Corellia which is 47-49.

The group content is fun that being FP's and Op's but it's old and tired and in the end doesn't matter as everyone will get good enough gear or better gear without trying so there is no point to it.

People on the forums tell you do the FP's, OP's, crafting and such but none of it really matters in the end. Crafting : you will loot better gear while PvPing or running regular quests , fps or ops, so no point. Gear is easy to get so everyone will have it so again no point to ops or fp.
At end game the game really becomes pointless especially on Ilum as Republic.

That's one of the biggest things I come away with is that the game is too easy, too much good gear drops for nothing, no one needs you and you need no one. No middle game content that would make someone slow down. No real Epic questing going on. It's just more like doing assignments. You will get everything you want guaranteed. No risk whatsoever. It's epically boring.

SWTOR is mediocre at best and fraudulent as an MMO at worst.
They duped the paying public into believing this was a true MMO.

As soon as I started playing Mass Effect, I'm like ohhhh this is where SWTOR got all their crap from. So bioware really took no iniative in anything in this game, it's a slice and patch job and it shows in so many ways in this game. I could care less about graphics and character creature, so I won't give my opinions on those, but I will say I'm running a high end system and this game set on the lowest overall setting possible is trying to burn out my video card with 70+ C temps. The rest of my box and CPU run well below 40C but for some reason this game is very GPU heavy. Bugs and stuff like that are pretty common on release so I have no problems with bugs on a new release, they are fixing the bugs which is nice, but while they are doing that, they've left the game and things like balancing toons in pvp, and open world pvp or lack there of kicked it to the curb with small fixes that literally have done nothing to improve the game. What I do have a problem with in this game is the overall direction they took with it, instances single player RPG that you are paying for. At least GW was free for the same cocept and sadly I'd put GW1 ahead of this game still and problem still is innovation wise.

This game is a huge grind, I've 10 total toons on 2 servers and I've done the same missions 10 times on about 5 different planets, what happened to playing all these different toons with different experiences, about the only difference is your unique quest, and playing light or dark, which on the imperial side is a joke btw, since half the fricking companions hate light side choices, republic side I'm finding is a cake walk, light side choices equals instant win with companion.

I can't believe bioware had the balls to make ppl pay for this game, don't be fooled by the 10's ppl, if you hated wow, I don't care how much you like starwars this game will not satisfy you. After disappointing runs by Mortal online, xyson and now Swtor, hears hoping Guild wars 2 can actually pull of some of that innovation they are talking about. My biggest issue is the lack of permanence in the game. Absolutely nothing I do in the game effects the world in a greater capacity past 10 seconds. So it's basically a single player KOTOR experience with MP added in. I wanted to love this game SO much...I tried, for months...I tried. But it's a freakin grind...and the PVP is so lollypop that it's a mere distraction from the grind. This is a HUGE fail. I gave this game a 5 because I had a lot of fun for the first 15 levels of a few characters...but once you get into the 20s, it's just the same old. Integrate a permanence, a feeling that I'm effecting the greater world, the greater battle, and I'll come back, but until then, I'd rather play BF3, Skyrim, or EVE. Expand

Most of the budget went into voiceovers.

Deadbeat gameplay at 50 that copies a 7 year old game design, with most of what made it good missing or broken.

Overflowing with fanboys trying to convince you the game is only about reroling new characters over and over - but the game can only add content after 50, FAIL.

Please do not be fooled by those that rate this game a perfect ten, I imagine EA/BW are having their developers up the rating. Until EA/BW management, game designers, and developers start to listen, I foresee this game becoming free two within two/three months from now. There is several major issues in play here, 1) Game designers do not listen to the community, they sure make a lot promises, such as "it's now our highest priority"; "We'll have this in an update coming soon"; etc. Well it's been four months since the release and the game has only had two major updates. The first was Patch 1.1 in which EA/BW lost close to 300,000 players, then next is the current Patch 1.2 ( which if not fixed soon, will be the deciding factor to when this game goes Free-to-Play. 2) Population issues, during prime-time I did a few tests, logged into several different servers to look at different populations on each server and each of the planets, there was some planets with a mere 7-10 players and others with 30-40 players during prime time except for Fatman, the only decently sized server out of the other 60-80 servers. Server merges are needed, but instead of addressing the issue, EA/BW continues to ignore the community. If you like playing a MMO solo the entire time, not finding any groups to do some of the more "tedious & time consuming" instances, well this game might be for you. 3) Story - It's hit or miss, you either like it, or you do not. After 30, the grind is apparent, the stories lose focus and the position of each quest is put as far as they can on the map that has several objectives. Anything to waste player time I suppose is one of their game models, the Dark side responses get quite old, several repeats of the same four or five responses. For spending close to 300 million dollars on the game, I was expecting quite bit more variety in the choices. Several issues were raised up by key players, even more detail topics such as the Combat Medic/Healer changes by Ruku and several other top healers, but tend to go completely ignored by the one of the lead game designer GZ who literally makes changes without providing valid reasons for the change. I am done listening to their promises for content to be delivered and then reluctantly determining the key feature it is not ready the day of the patch after advertising the updates the weeks beforehand to get players to re-subscribe to the game. Another key feature missing is the looking for group tool, EA/BW stance is against having players use a tool in order find a group for an instance/flashpoint with no basis as to why this is. This game started out casually based, but with the recent patch, that is no longer the case, in order to stand a chance in the game's 8v8 warzones (yes only 8v8, could be same faction vs. same faction, population issues again here) you are now expected to grind for months straight to get Battle Master Gear, and then War Hero gear on top of that. So lets say, you have three alts, each alt would have grind out a full set of Battle gear in order to use that gear to get the next set, they definitely gated this - it is a requirement because the armor has expertise on it, similar to resilience in WoW, Radiance in Lotro, or Keys/Flagging up in Ever Quest. The new legacy system introduced in 1.2 is also quite costly for credits, plan on playing for eight hours a day in order to save up for one or two of the cosmetic/droid/buff, legacies they introduced. Crafting is also terribly designed, having a companion run missions for materials takes the fun out of crafting. There is nothing too great here, many other games are far superior in this area. There is nothing real of great value worth mentioning, everything is bland and generic, no heroic battles, it's all stationary with little to no strategy. No day night cycles, no underwater, constant lag through warzones/player vs. environment content, 1.2 also introduced audio glitches in each of the warzones, I do not see how their Quality Assurance department releases content that is all buggy. Quests still cannot be abandoned or reset, instances and raids are bugged out still since launch, it makes really no sense how this content still gets developed when all these other issues are continuously ignored.

PLEASE... Please read the official forums to get a consensus of whether or not to purchase this game, EA/BW is all about making promises and not delivering on those, do not be fooled into buying this game without careful review. SWTOR forums (Sort by replies/date and that should give you good idea of how they treat their player base). The game was 6 yrs development, 300+ million budget, final score 5.5, but do your research, do not fall victim to a review done by a critic how has no experience as to what the game has to offer past the level 20.

I went world to world every time enjoying the content, racing against my guild mates to level 50, excited to be among the first to master the end game content. Then I hit 50 and hit the great big emptiness. Yes there are dailies and there are raids. Thats it, the pvp is a joke. Suppose for a moment, you push yourself through the boring grind, the over sided power of the Sith or worse than that the over sided power of Battlemaster Armor with the expertise on it, what are you rewarded with? I'll tell you, on my Sent it was a horrific looking set of armor. It looked like a 5 year old made a cross of anime and iron man armor. Really, its not hard to design a bad ass looking Knights of the Old Republic armor, heres the equation Robes+Storm Trooper Armor = Utterly Bad Ass Jedi Armor. Who doesn't think the armor Obi Won and Anikan rock in the Clone Wars cartoon is awesome looking? I know, only some many variations and such but come on, you can't work with that really? Even if you want something different, what they put out was not it. The craziest part is the armor right before level cap, at like 45-50 was pretty sweet looking... This is not to mention the numerous bugs and glitches. I think that something as simple as the armor designs looking like junk shows just how lazy they got at the end of designing the game. To be honest, for the past couple weeks I have been telling myself, I gotta log on this week, I gotta get on this week. Yesterday I asked myself why I have to log on and renewed my Rift account. Hopefully Bioware will pull its head out of its arse and address the problems quick but sadly I doubt it. Heres a drink to another lost Star Wars MMO... Expand

Now i have waited a long to to review it and i wanted to try GW2 before giving my final opinion.

When i critic this game, i do so as a kotor fan and an mmo player.

As a Kotor fan, the game did "satisfy" me. The leveling process in this game is basicly playing Kotor 3, and for that it scores some points. However, this game is not Kotor 3, it's an MMO based on the first instalment of the franchise. Being an MMO, you quicly discover that your actions in this world are without true consequences. Yes you will make choices there and there. Some very hard ones might i add. But in the end, none of the them matter. You have ONE endind to your personal story. And once you are done with it's over. What ever you have accomplished in your story will never be mentionned again nor will affect your experience at level 50. Now... I understand that as an MMO, you can't possibly be the next great sith lord to rules the universe when thousands of other players share this world with you. However, it is worth noting that the MMO nature of this game severly limits the outcome and consequences of your personal story. Which is one of BW's strong points. As an MMO, this is where the game misses the mark. Bioware didn't dare to innovate and break the mold. I know you read this before, but i will say it again. This is WoW in space. The quests are your typical go kill that, and gather 6 rat tails missions. PvP is your typical warzone, open PvP is joke, the game play is slow, characters are unresponsive, animations lag. PvE fairs better, but not much. Every new boss, and operation comes with it's bag of bugs, making the experience very frustrating. The PvE encounters are "interesting" enough, but nothing ground breaking either. Now we have GW2. And while i am not a fan of phantasy (i am a sci-fi geek) i have to say that Arenanet has more balls than Bioware. Yes it's still an MMO at it's core. But this is the first mmo that finally feels "fresh". They are no healers or tanks, you just change weapons (in combat) to either increase your dps, resilience, or utility. The combat is dynamic. It's fast and be really confusing at time. But boy is it enjoyable. They are no PvE raid in this game, just dungeon and world event that keep. The level ajustment system is the what make GW2 a solid AAA MMO. Basicly, you go anywhere in the world, and your level will adapt to the region you are in. This is an amazing feature, in this game the whole WORLD is your playground. Not an instance area, the world is alive and kicking. And this is what every MMO should achieve.

Starwars was great as i leveled my characters. But past that, the MMO features are just lacking. I honestly don't have high hopes for this game. The only thing that will save it is the fact that is the current Starwars MMO. With million of SW fan, this MMO will be around for the time. But take out the SW lore and the story line questing and you have lifeless, uninspiring game.

With Dragon age 2, this game is a great disappointment from Bioware.

Now, I know you can't expect a game to live up to such legendary hype as this game had, but this game pulled a Duke Nukem Forever and gave us a game that was not even half decent. This game is going free to play in september for a reason, bioware is losing subscribers and is trying to save the ship from sinking, but alas, it won't work, mainly because this game sucks balls. This game fails right off the bat for one reason, it focuses mainly on story, so it's basically a single player rpg with multiplayer added on, The genre is called Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game for a reason people, because it's a MULTIPLAYER rpg focused mainly on MULTIPLAYER. This game couldn't have been saved even if it was a different company for that reason alone. But aside from that, there are quite a few reasons this game is bad. Let's get to the biggest problem with this game first, which is that Most of the class stories just plain suck, especially on the republic side. The republic stories are that of a cliche mary sue character (The jedi knight), a guy who has no real motive to be helping the republic (smuggler), a badly written martyr character who's quests are similar to the jedi knight's (the jedi consular), and a generic, cliche special ops character (The trooper). So, republic stories fail right off the bat. Sith empire only has 2 good stories as well (The bounty hunter and the Agent), Both of which are sort of cliche, but are still fun, the bounty hunters story being one of betrayal and the imperial agent's story being one much like James Bond's . The other two classes are just generic mustache twirling villain stories (Sith warrior and Inquisitor). The next reason that this game fails right off the bat is that the way this game is structured makes it feel so empty and yet so claustrophobic, every zone has invisble walls you can't pass, restricting exploration, you also have to take a speeder bike everywhere almost every time to get to the next zone. The third reason that this game fails is that the community is non existent, probably due to the lack of players. The nail that seals the coffin on this game is that the flashpoints and pvp just suck ass, the flashpoints are mainly generic imperial/ republic space ships or space stations, and the pvp is just so unbalanced it's not even funny, atleast with wow it's a 50/50 split on who wins, but with swtor, it's usually imperials who win. TL;DR version: **** game, end of story Expand

A fairly mediocre entry. The game puts forward some good ideas, but it's weighed very heavily down by frustrating bugs, unpolished features, downright backwards design in places, and Bioware being seemingly incapable of telling stories through subtleties.

I can kind of understand Biowares motive in getting the game out before Christmas but this game was NOT ready, Bioware and EA should be ashamed of themselves, there was literally zero communication from the devs about the bugs and general problems people were having and that was most likely due to the holidays but there is no excuse for that.

This game has potential to be very good but it really doesn't offer anything over the more established game that is World of Warcraft other than the fact that it's Star Wars, light sabers weee! It was advertised as revolutionary, the MMORPG to beat all MMORPG's (but what MMO ISNT marketed like this?) and it is anything but. Instead what we have is a buggy, poorly optimized WoW clone with little content. There are problems with every facet of this game except the story, which is actually pretty good. The engine is awful, it chugs on a beastly gaming computer, high res textures almost never load, the animations are choppy and stilted, abilities never activate when you tell them to, you get stuck in seams and blocked by strange invisible walls in the middle of thoroughfares. The game still feels like it needs a year of beta testing. The gameplay much like WoW's in virtually every way except that it doesn't flow as well, the animation and ability delay issues make it feel awkward. The Zones are linear, the quests are the same kill 10 bandit quests as every MMORPG (but with some dialogue sprinkled in) and the typical MMORPG milestones like mounts and advanced classes are all present. There is very little innovation. The stories are the only good thing about this game but they aren't enough to save it. Also, I suspect that the focus on story is what causes this game to feel so linear. And not just linear but limited, no raiding the opposing faction, world PvP is virtually non existent beyond the odd gank here and there, the environments have little to explore and are boxed in by massive walls everywhere. PvP in general is quite dull and broken due to ability delay and unbalanced classes. The classes themselves are a problem. Compared to a game like WoW with many classes that each feel very distinct and interesting (as well as there being many more) in TOR there are only 4 classes essentially, and only two of them are viable in PvP. All in all I say don't bother getting TOR right now. If you are desperate to play an MMORPG play WoW, it offers more content, better gameplay, and more classes. Maybe in a year or two once TOR has patched the game significantly it will be worth playing, but right now there are far too many issues to keep the game from being fun. Expand

Doing the same thing in a building and then reaching a "boss" character that you can't kill and then have to realize you need to play the whole quest again because you forgot to get a weapon that was hidden under rock is tedious, not fun. Then when I saw the price to buy the game ($59 at the time of writing this), I realized I wouldn't spend that much to play this game, but the world is worth exploring a little bit. But you have to participate in every single little bit of fighting -- by smashing all the buttons -- and gets so repetitive that it really only goes so far for me. Then I saw it costs $20 for a limited amount of time to play per month! That's when I stopped playing altogether. It's not worth spending $59 one time, certainly not an additional $240 to play it for a year. As of this review, many people are leaving it and playing Massive Effect 3 instead, so the servers are not really full these days. I'm not so sure they'll be coming back, either. I won't. Expand

It's a bad WOW clone. That's all there is to it. They copied WOW and added the BIOWARE dialogue choices and cutscenes that we all love from Mass Effect and KOTOR but it just doesn't work in an mmo.

PVP in this game is a unbalanced broken mess. All you do is stand opposite of each other and spam abilities at each other. Questing is boring typical crap you can find in any korean free mmo.

Cutscenes are nice at first but after you play through the game they become an annoyance you can't skip fast enough. To many same options to pick from and ugly graphics, bad voice overs, repetitive npcs.

I can only suggest someone buys this game if they are a diehard mmo fan and must try them all.

But the biggest problem is how poorly conceived it is as a MMO, it doesn't reinvent itself as you level up (there's no game changing mechanics introduced after the first levels), this is a one-time disposable experience (like you'd expect in a solo game not a paying MMO) and once you reach max level (which doesn't take very long) there's nothing to look forward to aside from doing the exact same thing only with a different character (the story is 90% the same for all classes and you have to explore planets always in the same order while leveling). Voice-overs alone aren't enough to make a good MMO, sorry. Expand

So the game, its content and features are certainly a 3.0 for the lack there-of as a massively-multiplayer game that has a $15/month subscription. It's more like a series of Star Wars the Clone Wars mini-games with absolutely no semblance of massively-multiplayer purpose. But the game is a multi-user single-player lobby-system rpg, though for that it should be buy-to-play, not a $15/month subscription model.

Just to name a few, and generally speaking, PvE is 5/10; shallow - linear - static - absolutely nothing massively-multiplayer about it, and very much like the heavily linear PvE game-play of Age-of-Conan. The voice-overs is where the points come from, but again that is what I would expect in a single-player rpg.

PvP is non-existent. Its a lobby-system third-person shooter within a confined shoe-box of capture the flag or control-points that offers no value or purpose to the over-arching republic verses empire struggle for control within a massively-multiplayer universe. It's a redundant short-lived purposeless activity of 10 v 10 lobby-system shallowness.

Massively-multiplayer universe is not persistent or influenced by your actions at all; your influence is non-existent, so when you do accomplish a clean-up of bad guys in favor of your faction in a story, nothing in the environment has changed what-so-ever. This is a very static and meaningless world.

Crafting itself is a mini-game that has absolutely no value compared to what drops from general and elite mobs in the world. The importance of Community-driven and incentivised Crafting and Merchandising doesn't matter as in this game, blue, and rare item drops from non-elite mobs and elite mobs drop at an astounding rate, diminishing the value of community-centricity and value of crafting and merchandising. So this where I would disagree on the importance of Crafting, rather than the mechanism for it. The importance of it upwards to mid-game is demeaning and non-existent, but an interesting mini-game.

There is not open-world player housing or player-controlled merchandising.

There are absolutely no server or community-wide dynamic events; none what-so-ever, which should incentivise and motivate one faction to thwart an enemey invasion or control of a territorial choke-point which comes with it risk of loss or substantial reward for winning. Non-existent.

Warzones are few and far between; 3 battle-grounds where there is no reward for winning. They are mind-numbingly repetitive and shallow.

Space combat is x-wing fighter; shallow and cheap at it's core.

Achievements are non-existent, as are challenging titles. Everyone's a jedi, but at one point in Beta I could achieve a "Vicious" title as a Republic character for leaning toward the Darkside. . .that has been removed as one example of several other achievements that have been removed which could 'distinguish' your character from someone elses'.

Character customization and distinguishment from an opposing player is non-existent. Every character playing looks exactly like someone elses, as do titles. You cant customize your character with distinguishing looks, appearance, title, dyed armor or clothing or color-crystal sabers, because there is no breadth or depth to any customization mechanics, features, titles, or modifications that are anything but few and which provides no visual distinction.

Be warned that if you purchse this game, you are purchasing a Single-Player lobby-system Knights of The Old Republic 2 with Cooperative-Online game-play elements, not a Massively-Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

First off all the game is pretty, when it works it's nice and the idea is great. The crafting system ends up taking longer then in other mmos because you have to wait a set time- you cant go from 1-450 in half an hour if you have the mats like in WoW. It's set up so only your companions can craft and some low level epics take 10 or so minutes to make, of course with a chance to fail.

PvP is slow, drawn out and there are so many CCs it's ridiculous. Be prepared to go and make a sandwich while you're pvping (okay it's not THAT bad but it is silly)
Overall the "make your own story" idea that Bioware sold is nothing short of a lie- it's not true, want to be a smuggler? You dress like Han Solo, act like Han Solo, have a wookie, and fly a old version of the millenium falcon, Thanks for coming out. The whole epic storyline just isn't there, this is almost a 1:1 port of other games "Youre a hero, the most important in the universe, but we cannot seem to get you a decent suit of armor, heres some cloth armor there Commando you look like a doorman. Aren't you feeling epic?"
Biowares 'customer serivce' is GARBAGE, their game is so buggy it's insane. The launcher BARELY works, the assets either don't download or don't install, and there are so many bugs it's crazy. Don't expect any help from them, or the community who thinks that any problem is from your computer which must OBVIOUSLY be a P.O.S. I've spent over 12 hours trying to get this game to work, called the customer service at least 7 times, reformatted my computer, and followed every guide online. The programming is an utter failure, what is a great game when you can play it is crap when you can't.

Combat is repetitive, linear, and has been done better before. There is only a few options on which to conduct a battle, with little real options and each battle feels VERY similar. This is my biggest gripe in that the core gameplay has been done better before, and offers nothing new to the extent that I played this game extensively for about two weeks and quickly tired of it. I didn't even finish my free 30 days. PVP doesn't feel right. Ability delay and a general clumsiness pervade and the war-zones are terrible (BIOWARE what were you thinking with Hutt Ball.. no Sith or Jedi would play something like that!). There is little to no open world PVP and certainly no incentive to engage in it. I think in my many hours of gameplay I got into 1 open world fight - now I admit I didnt go looking for it that hard but surely it should have found me on a PVP server? I chose a PVP server to get ganked yet was never forced or inclined to engage in open world PVP at all. The worlds feel empty and soulless due to the sharding issue but it is more because the game feels designed the game to play like a single player game with a chat window attached. How could chat bubbles not be included? I just cant fathom the decision making that went into that. Imperial fleet is probably the only place the game feels full but there is no connection between people speaking in general and PC's which may as well be NPC's. I played up to 40 as a Sith Inquisitor and I found the story to be well voice acted but for the most part boring and generic. Thats not including the standard "go here, kill 20 things" quests which are fully voice acted - to the games detriment, at the end of the day it just extends the grind. I would have loved to stay around for longer in this game. I love the Star Wars universe and I really wanted a MMORPG to engage me. Unfortunently I'll take engaging gameplay over voice acting and "story" any day.

Warzones are fun, but they get boring after a while (Ilum could save that, but it needs a lot of work). Raiding is ok. The storyline is good but it gets repetative after you've leveled one character up in the same faction. MMOs are all about raiding and pvp, storyline won't keep you interested for more than a month or two. And MMO storyline is never that great, no matter how you sugar coat it, you just can't make it as truly epic as a great single player game since you have 1000s of players who are all "saving the galaxy" 50 times a day and killing the same mobs over and over.

    What it needs:

    Cross server queues.
    Server transfers
More interesting and dynamic world pvp (see guild wars 2 or DaoC)
    Ranking system for pvp
Balanced crafting system (horribly unbalanced right now)

Yes it has a few new trappings and cool ideas thrown in but the core mechanic that makes up 90% of the game is still the same thing as all of the other mmo games. The novelty factor wore off after a couple weeks of playing and I found myself doing dailies, doing the same routine every time I logged in and I quickly fell into a sense of familiarity with this game. That's when it hit me; I was bored before my free 30 day subscription was even up.

All the good things in it I liked are the same things I liked about rift, world of warcraft, everquest and so on so I'll just cut to what I didn't like about SW:TOR.

    1) The engine and game isn't optimized at all. Even my computer (which is way way above reccomended specs and will run any game on the market with headroom to spare) never ran it smoothly, especially at any higher end settings. It always felt like it was running just a little too sluggish. Bioware said the massive complaints about performance were due to so many people running inferior computers but that isn't the case really. The games engine simply isnt optimized well enough. The graphics are subpar as well. I am never one to think that good graphics will equal good game but given a game where you're basically repeating the same actions day in and day out it should atleast look pretty while doing it. WOW looks better to me and it's a dated engine, but it's wonderful use of color and art direction makes it stand out while TOR has this underlying feel of looking like a dozen other games.

    2) It requires you to use EA's origin service. This is ultimately why I canceled my subscription and won't play this anymore. Origin was the last straw for me in my list of complaints. Origin IS spyware, it tells you it is in the EULA you agree to when you agree to the terms and conditions to install it. It also was recently changed to say you can't sue EA. There is a reason why germany (yes the whole country) took action against Origin because it invades privacy. I detest origin and again was the last straw in my choosing not to play battlefield 3 anymore. And as someone tried to point out in the comments section that origin isnt required, yes it is and the gams official FAQ says so. http://www.swtor.com/info/faq#170974

    3) The game is a theme park much like WOW. Once you start playing you're constantly guided through the game via quests and so on. It never felt like I got to explore anything on my own or discover anything because the game was always holding my hand and telling me where to go. There was no sense of awe, no sense of exploration, no sense of discovery because you're constantly having the game tell you what and where to go next as you progress through the game. It's like there is a invisible path of quests you have to follow through from level 1 to 50.

    4) The game is too easy and that makes most people you meet insufferable to be around. Much like everyother mmo out now the game is geared toward allowing in anyone who wants to play to get maximum subscriptions. In order to do that you need to appeal to the lowest common denominator by making your game as easy as you can get away with. Much like wow it takes little effort to level up and do things aside from the occasional time you need a party to do something (which makes it feel inconvient). You never get this feeling of accomplishing anything by overcoming a challenge because the game has no real challenges or penalties. The problem with a MMO like this and it being easy is that when it becomes easy then players get bored easily and bored players become obnoxious players and obnoxious players are players I don't want to play with. There is a reason why the majority of the player base for like WOW are petty, obnoxious and sarcastic brats and why the majority of the everquest player base are friendlier, kinder and more helpful and that reason is because WOW makes players lazy and bored by being way to easy to play and everquest requires work and teamwork. Even death has virtually no penalty, there is no real reason to be careful or thrill of being almost taken down. In this if you die it is just sort of a ho-hum experince and you go on not really caring, thus there is no element of danger.

There is no sense of a large scale and all the areas feel so small and cramped. Once you have checked out a area it feels even smaller. At first everything was fine but it didn't take long before all the area, dungeons and so on all just start feeling like little compartments in a rat maze.

The pluses- story line. I am a PVE and lore nerd, so I have to confess- BW delivered great voice overs, dialogues and story. But after a day or two I started looking at it with more attention, so here is my thought on it: 1) PVE (story, voices etc. and lore) is one of the best in the market; 2) Design, arts - WORST there ever will be. I mean, if the Jedi Temple - a cornerstone of the whole IP and franchise - looks like a huge 3 stores tent with homogenic textures on its walls and one statue, copy-pasted on each side of this tent like 30 times, WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT OF IT? It is the fundamental game art!!! Every instance, house, room, anything feels like having copy-pasted floors and walls, sometimes windows. Every city feels so too large and empty. Like they say in my country in general you can not watch this without tears; 3) Graphics. The graphical execution is another disappointment! I mean, WTF!!! The 2012 title is released without DX11 support. Oh, wait, it didn't even have anti-aliasing on launch!!!! Add multiple graphics bugs (like colorful fences on the sky) etc. - and that's just the start! Take a look at fountains, rivers, lakes, water-falls. The water implementation is simply horrible, it looks like transparent slow falling jelly! TES 3 Morrowind (2003 year!!!) had a lot better, realistic and beautiful water implementation with shaders version 1.0!!!; 4) The races - this is to be left with no comments. You have humans with 3 or 4 body types, and 6 different face texture packs. And 6 face texture packs means six different races!!! That's as horrid and pitiful as it takes. 5) Sound. Mixed. Sometimes the ambient are good, sometimes ok. But they are not even close to overly-expressly epic WoW ambient, which in my opinion is pretty average. 6) World. There is no open world. There is just rails and tunnels. You can not climb on that mountain or hill. You can not fly over that tree. In fact, you feel like you are some stool, which BW is taking through straight intestine all the way to the end-game - i.e. the anal orifice. There is no freedom to explore the world. And thats's the biggest minus to me engine-wise. It even overwhelms the graphics, which can be fixed in nearest future, and arts, which can be fixed in long-term (provided that game is still alive, which I doubt). But this closed world is the game engine issue (hello, cheap Hero engine) and can not be fixed. Hey! A 200 million dollars game uses weak, slow and cheap Hero engine! Even CCP, which started with couple of thousand bucks in the basement, developed a beautiful open world game engine, perhaps, because they treat paying customers with more respect. How are people supposed to believe this world is real, when all they see is not a freedom to explore, but straight intestine. I seriously started to feel like I have been turned into the proctologist's office, but not entertained with the game. And lying BW promised it will be open, un-instanced world!!! 7) PVP. Didn't test, as I am a PVE carebear; 8) Customer support. There is nothing to say, really. CS is the final nail in the TOR coffin to me. I opened a ticket by the December 30th and NEVER (!!!) got an answer from the CS. That is zero. And finally, the worst that happened to me - right before the end of "free" 30 days the button unsubscribe disappeared! How very convenient for BW right before re-occuring paying period start!!! and that happened on Google Chrome, IE, Firefox- all 3 major browsers I have!!! So the only option to unsubscribe was to call BW, stay on hold for over an hour, than talk to some Indian rep for 20 minutes so he understands what you want of him??? And on this resource I have also found evidences that BW deleted official forum threads about missing UNSUBSCRIBE button and link to page for subscription cancellation. Never going back - that's for sure. Like they say in Texas- double cross me once and it's a shame on you. Double-cross me twice and it's a shame on me. And I ain't that naive, partner. ;) Oh, about the CS. Like I mentioned if you have an issue don't even hope it will be fixed in reasonable time. BW claims that all the reps are very busy. But all the posts on the official forums are moderated, every inconvenient for BW post (concerning UNSUB, bugs, lack of respect to paying customer) is deleted within a minutes, people are being banned and warned for odd reasons in no time. So BW employees find their time to deal with such matters, which is why there is not enough time to actually solve tickets and help people! P.S. All this is just top of iceberg. Even voice-overs, dialogues and story does not compensate all misses and fails, not even for a story lover such as me! 3 points to the max, but with such CS and attitude towards paying cows - 0!!! WORST DISAPPOINTMENT since Master of Orion 3!!! Expand

Honestly this game was decent in the first few weeks. But once you hit 50 and there is no more story there really isn't much to the game. You have hardmodes and raiding and broken pvp, if you want all that then why not just stay with a much more polished game like Rift or WoW? This game is not innovative.

There are far too many things for me to list. Not only can I not remember everything, but I'm afraid I would exceed the 5,000 character limit. I'll keep this brief and to the point by referencing the major issues.

PvP - Not horribly imbalanced, but dated. There is an ability delay caused by your characters animations overriding your commands. The system does not prioritize player input.

PvP - Not horribly imbalanced, but dated. There is an ability delay caused by your characters animations overriding your commands. The system does not prioritize player input. This is terrible design and causes unresponsive play.

Economy - Totally borked. All professions, but two are completely worthless. Credits (gold/money) are easily exploited by bots camping chests that respawn on a set timer. Bot logs in, loots chest, logs out, waits 7 minutes, repeats. There are also professions that give you credits outright; no item trading or gathering required. This is easily exploited by botting.

PvE - Nothing innovative here. Just the same as any other MMORPG you've ever played. Insanely buggy max-level "flashpoints" (dungeons). There are bosses that cannot be looted and instances that cannot be completed. Holy trinity (tank/DPS/healer) still intact, but only four players are required for a flashpoint. This puts even more stress on the requirement for healers and tanks. This is only gets worse with...

Server Population - Most servers are dead/dying now that they free month is finished. In response to launch queues, Bioware decided to open up more servers instead of raising the population caps. People left in droves and many servers are struggling to progress.

Faction Imbalance - Republic is getting destroyed by Empire players.

UI - Not customizable. There are so many things wrong with the UI, it's hard to list them all. Your debuffs on your target look the same as other player's debuffs. Not a single thing can be moved aside from the chat window, but there is no where to put that anyways. Your buffs/debuffs are too small. There is no combat log. No macros, which means no mouse-over healing, etc... No target of target. There are many more problems.

MMO Factor - It's not an MMO. Worth the $60 dollar purchase, but definitely not worth $15 recurring monthly fee.

If you like RPG's then you will likely enjoy TOR because at its heart that is what it is. It borrows its format from other Bioware games where your choices shape the game for you at least to a point. The stories in most cases are enjoyable however there are some themes on the Imperial side that become trite. Primarily the Empire in many cases comes off as completely incompetent. I believe that this was done in an attempt to make the player feel heroic. The game play follows the successful model of WoW. Some people criticise this but I find it handy. This game doesn't have a steep learning curve because its play style is already familiar. You can jump in and enjoy the story and the game play right away. Sometimes the game play lacks challenge. However I beleive that is because due to the large number of quest on each planet. If you do all the quest on a planet you will out level the next planets quest. Throw in exp for falshpoints, or pvp or space combat and you can make the game very simple. if you out level the game try doing heroics solo and you will find some challenges. The crafting system is very similar to wow but does have a nice wrinkle to it with the ability to reverse engineer items in order to get better schematics. it offers a little more than WoW in crafting but doesn't become burdensome. The companion system has its ups and downs. While companions stories become interesting you constantly have to be concerned with your faction with them. Some of the companions abilites mesh better with certain class choices. Also your morality choices can please or displease your companion. If your making them happy its all gravy. if your not making them happy you sometimes feel a little animosity towards them. The games reliance on story while its biggest strength does have a few issues. It makes the game very linear. You are pushed along a certain path. You can deviate a bit but largely there is one way to go. So there is less freedom in this game during leveling. However this is something most MMO's suffer from. The gear system is very familiar as it borrows greatly from wow. There are a large amount of armors in the game and the modification system allows for players to customize their gear and if they care to put in the time they can maintain a certain look. The system was far more robust in beta but regrettably they have dumbed it down. Still you do have a lot more options to customize your appearance. They are reportedly coming out with a more robust system for altering the color of gear. They have abandoned their "fit to chest" option for this system. It is a little disappointing but if they come through with their promise then it will be worth it. One criticism I have is that the game revolves around story which is a huge draw for roleplayers. Yet many roleplaying tools are sadly missing from the game. You cannot sit in chairs, many emotes do not have animations and such. I am hoping that this will be addressed. All and all I think the game has a lot of [promise. However there are many things still missing. To be fare it is unreasonable to assume that a new game will have all the features of games that have had years to establish themselves. I have give the game a 7 because while I find it enjoyable I think Bioware has a lot of work to do for the game to reach its potential. I am willing to give them that time. Expand

Basically, SWTOR looks pretty, but it's just a layer of pristine fallen snow covering the toxic waste dump that MMORPGs have become in the wake of WoW.

The main contributor to my relatively low rating of this game is the lack of response from the developers, particularly in response to the myriad of exploits, bugs, and general imbalance occurring in the world of PVP. Developers are silent regarding proven faction balance issues between animations (Imperial animations are faster, thus their effects "supersede" Republic players effects. For example, if a Republic player issues a knockback and a an Imperial reacts fast enough, they can render the move irrelevant and knock the republic player back first.). Numerous massive exploits have happened and the developers have taken no action, such as "Ilum Massacre Day". Almost 75-80% of PVP matches have become dominated by sorcerers/sages and bounty hunter/troopers due to glaring balance issues with classes.

SWTOR can be a fantastic game, but not unless Bioware kicks things into hyperdrive and starts making sweeping changes, and fast. I don't think anyone is foolish enough to believe that there's any chance of this MMO failing in the near future, but there is a great chance of it not being anywhere near as successful as they have hoped and dreamed.

The distance to run takes up roughly 70% of your gaming time. This is not a joke or an exaggeration, this is what I timed over a week of gameplay. So naturally this makes for a hideously boring game.
The combat is generic and dull.
The storyline is weak and becomes highly diluted due to the obscene amount of side quests and running about.
The graphical style and quality is shockingly bad. The graphics are just poor, and the style is very cartoon'ish which is absurd seeing that Star Wars can be extremely dark.
The space combat is about 15 years old in play style and animation. i would be embarrassed to have released it how it is.

in short, this game is a horrible and permanent stain on Bioware which will now make me question every other product they release as this is so appalling.

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.

I wound up bailing out on Star Wars: The Old Republic well before hitting the level cap, but not before digging into it more so than any other MMO I've played. Even if it is an unhappy marriage between two wildly different game types, the fact that it kept me hooked for so long at least counts for something.

A good game. It pays excellent homage to the film series (even though it's set before the movies), and is a really solid MMO.
