Furthermore, while they encourage you to make choices you end up constained because certain gear can only be used with enough light side or dark side points so you're constantly making choices you don't even want to make. Other than this gripe, the game is pretty well executed. It's crafting system is really strong and will be loved by many. A lot of people seem to be hating on it are probably people who are sticking to WOW and are sad to see people leave. If you look at these reviews they will have a 0 and say it's an ok game. Pretty strange. It's worth the 60$ especially if you like story lines. It really is story driven; I actually want to make alts just to experience their story. Expand

As can be seen from the spectrum of scores for this game, it's one of those things you either love or hate. Yes, comparisons can be made to WoW...as well as many other MMOs...but the same goes for almost any new MMORPG on the market. Just because the game reminds of you another one, doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad, in fact it can mean the complete opposite, as with SWTOR, which takes elements from other games and upon combining them surpasses them. As is said, the student has now become the master. The fact that the game is fully voiced greatly adds to its appeal and makes it much more playable and enjoyable. The companion system is perfect and the character progression is well paced. Even during the common 'kill this' or 'fetch this' quests, the game remains interesting as one is always given multiple options during dialogue sequences. All in all, SWTOR is my favorite RPG to date and does so many things right that all of its minor flaws can be overlooked. I know which game I'll be playing several years from now. Expand

Unfortunately, this is not the case. One of the major features that was hyped since day one was SWTOR's fully voiced cast. Although the voice acting sounds like a nice addition (and it is), that's about the only plus. Character creation sounds like it would be a pulling point of a game based off the Star Wars franchise, yet Bioware has managed to make it the opposite. Star Wars has dozens of unique races, and Bioware has managed to incorporate none. Want to play a Wookie? Too bad. An Ithorian smuggler? Not a chance. A Rodian bounty hunter? Try again. But, have faith, Bioware has still included some other races: a blue human, a green human, a human with head tails, and, finally, a blind human. Oh, the variety. The actual gameplay is worse. Bioware doesn't even try to hide the WOWesque combat; it even mimics the old hotbars and menus. Combat is essentially press A to win, or, because Bioware likes variety, press A then B two times to win. Player vs. Player combat is the same formula. Like others have said, SWTOR doesn't differ from the standard MMO combat roles. You have tanks, healers and even damage-dealing roles. For some that might not be particularly disappointing, but I came into SWTOR looking for a revision of the tired system. I mean, it's a tad ridiculous when the Sith have their own DARK heal. I thought the Sith were supposed to be ruthless killing machines, not tempered healers. Anyways, quests are alternatively a burden. In a Bioware game, one expects story and characters to be a saving grace, but SWTOR somehow manages to abuse the same kill-ten-boars tradition. It's a pity considering Bioware has managed to lure in several big names in voice acting, and their talents are wasted in boring, terribly written dialog. There are some nice moments during questing though, where quests take a more dynamic approach, but these moments are too far and in between that they hold no real value. All in all, SWTOR had so much potential that could have been easily capitalized, but Bioware was so eager to cash in on the Star Wars franchise that any potential greatness was lost. Instead of the Star Wars epic that was presented to us prior to release, we have a run of the mill MMORPG smothered in decent voice acting. Expand

Gameplay is simple. Game is designed for casuals all the way. Graphics suck! Plain and simple, they are out of date.

They still have all the broken issues from months ago that they can't fix or don't intend to fix. Most issue get removed from the game to resolve them. Without a working patch this game isn't going to make it past the first 30days. If you don't know what I am talking about read the forums. Thousands of people can't patch the game and this is been an issue since Aug beta.

I only play because I can play with my friends and I sure don't take the game seriously in anyway.

This is the game that made me decide to never buy another BW game. This is a complete and total corporate scam to make money for it's execs.

People coming on here calling it a single player lobby game are ridiculous or are trolling. Phases (instances) are that way to prevent people having to sit around forever fighting over a named mob. Since the days of UO and Dark Age of Camelot, I think this is finally an MMO that I think I will be able to stick with for over a year. The story is phenomenal, and I find myself listening to every cut scene and basically forgetting that I am actually leveling. The combat is fun, I think at the moment I use roughly 8 skills in the course of a fight, so it's definitely not all spamming one button. The flashpoints I have done (4 now I think) have slowly gotten harder with more mechanics added in and I find that I don't mind doing them multiple times in a row for drops, experience, social points and alignment. I have yet to PvP so I really don't have any comment on that. The only minor disappointment for me is the space combat compared to a game centralized on space, I then realized that this game is not centralized around space fighting and now I think of space combat and quests more as like a mini game side thing to do, which makes it a little fun. Voice Dialogue not just for the main quest but every little itty bitty one as well. Now they were bought out by EA games and this being the most expensive video game ever produced, there were obvious corners that were cut. Lack of character customization chief among them. Obviously in order to push for a launch before the end of the year, there are no wookies or complicated playable races in the game.

During the beta, one of my favorite features was wearing a hood over a mask. This was taken out amongst other features due to bugs which apprently couldn't be fixed for launch. Here's to hoping they get put back in soon. An important attribute in a MMO is player vs player and this is limited to where you can find the other faction, which literally feels like small corners on each planet. The Warzones (Equivalent of battlegrounds in similar MMO's) number under 5 as of launch and is ok but definitely lacking more content and a real fun factor. Overall, the game is great one. Some of the best games immerse you in them, much like a good movie does. The story line for most classes drives the game and holds it up amongst any negatives. In the original Kotor, Jeremy Soule's music immersed you into a world you could not even imagine. His haunting rhythm on the same level as the excellent story. I was sad to see him not a part of this. It's also sad that the music it does have, does not play enough throughout the game. I am giving it a 10 because it has the potential to be a 10 once some of the many features removed for the launch are ultimately restored.

I know many how the user reviews have covered most the the flaws (unlike the obviously paid official reviewers), but I'll try to cover some as well. Character customization: For a game set around you being the hero who saves the galaxy, which in this very concept is already incredibly unsuited for an MMO, it does not offer to allow the player to design their characters the way the would like. First off, there are 8 races to choose from, but they are basically all human recolors, by which I mean they all look the same, except for the colour of their skin and occasionally a few extra features like horns or tentacles. This is unacceptable considering that Bioware had one of the most rich lore in terms of aliens to work with. I hope you are ready travel around with everyone looking almost exactly the same. Now on to the character models: there are only 4 and they are the same for each races. On top of that, you must select from premade faces. This is also unacceptable for a game released in 2011, almost 2012. Even low-budget Korean MMOs manage to offer a face maker to allow further customization. I'm not asking of ABP-like customization, but this is ridiculously below the average standard of RPGs these days. Story: This is suppose to be the major selling point of this game. We are supposed to be able to enjoy KotOR 3 to 11, but this turns out to be a deception, if not a straight out lie. First of all, class story-driven quests consist only roughly of 30% of all the quest you will do, the rest are repetitive quest shared between all classes. This means if you want to play multiple classes to enjoy each story line, you will have to replay a great majority of the same quests over and over. And the non-story quest are extremely repetitive in themselves already, since they mostly consist of fetch quests, kill X amount of creatures quest or "go active this control panel" quests. And these quest will not have any impact on the world you are playing in so you will often end up asking yourself "what was the point of that?", it is a very unrewarding experience. And quests of this nature should not be so present in a modern MMO, this is the kind of thing you expect from a game from the early last decade, not a big budget modern game. Now, the actual story isn't very better. The voice acting is pretty mediocre in the sense that its quality is very fluctuating. Some NPCs will have credible voices others will be painfully bad voice acting. In general, this will be average, but the voice acting clearly fails in critical moments where the drama is broken by horrible voice acting. It would have been a nice addition if Bioware had managed to do it right by keep a consistency in the quality of their actors. Now, about the moral choices, it is clear that Bioware is constantly dropping in quality in this area. Compared to their earlier work, this is absolutely unacceptable. The notions of good and evil are extremely childish in this game. For example: there is no room for arrogance or greed in the dark side, when you are bad, it means you are just plain evil and will kill everyone on sight. The writing resulting of your choices is pretty bad and often seems illogical. Not a very enjoyable experience if you intend to role-play, or at very least if you want a game that wont make you cringe at every line of dialogue. Combat: This is probably the weakest part of the game. I heard it's practically like WoW, but I have never played it. I hope you enjoy standing around click the same buttons over and over in the most uninspired manner possible. The gun fight is pretty horrible considering the game does not encourage any usually shooting related strategies. Forget about covering fire, relocation or dodging, this game encourages to stay where you are and unload everything you got on your enemy while he does the same. This often looks ridiculous when you are fighting another gun-wielding class and you just stand in front of each other, blasting yourselves apart until of you dies. Not fun at all. As for saber wielding classes, it's kind of the same flaws: there is no gameplay involving what you would expect from a sword fight. You just go to your enemy and click on him until he dies. This feels nothing like fencing, is extremely unimpressive adn you will get bored of it very quickly. I don't have much characters left and there are plenty of other things to write about. I suggest that you read other negative reviews so you don't get caught buying this game and feeling bad for wasting your money. Don't bother with the people who give 10/10, it seems they are the kind of fanboys that were omnipresent on the official forums. If you dared point a flaws in the beta (which is the whole point of a beta), you could expect a barrage of insults as if you had insulted them personally. Expand

After almost 6 months with this game, I finally understand why this game will fail everytime and why a game like WoW will succeed. It's all in how the company treats the consumer and how they work to develop things the consumer likes. SWTOR has failed in the sense that they've completely disregarded the consumer, to the point now where they are deleting posts on their website and banning accounts for saying even the slightest thing wrong about their game now. The fact that they've had to add things in 1.2 and 1.3 that should have been mandatory stuff at launch, and only after we've complained for long enough, shows they just don't really care about us. The lack of new content and the balancing issues in PvE raid scenerios make things either far too easy or way too hard some certain difficulty levels. Your forced to have a specific raid comp to complete all of the new HM dungeons, not just one or two fights like in WoW, and the lack of new content in 1.3 will send the already dwindling subscriptions numbers even further into a crumbling world. The fact that there are far too many servers with too many people spread out does nothing to solve this issue either and free character transfers won't fix that problem. It's been said that they are already preparing this game to go free-to-play in the coming patches because of the lack of subscriptions already. If that happens, this game will official be done. However, Bioware and EA aren't doing themselves any favors by firing most of the development team for this game, which really restricts how much content they can deal out. This game is bleeding out and dying a slow, painful death right now. The only reason why I gave this a 1 instead of a 0 is the fact that I met some really great people during my tenure with this game. The community is a great one but when your going to be ignored and given just stupid "upgrades" to a game that is in desperate need of new actual material to play through, then your never going to succeed with an MMO. Go back to WoW or wait for the new Guild Wars 2 to come out later this summer. Do not waste your time with this game. Expand

This game plays similar to a mix between a typical mordern BioWare game and World of Warcraft.

A change from the normal MMO storyline where you begin as a nobody that must make his way in the world, in TOR you begin as a legendary 'classname' and are a hero of 'faction'. While it nice to be special, once everyone is special nobody is.
The character models, regardless of race, share the exact same frame and animations, defeating the purpose of having multiple races. Despite this consolidation of effort, the animations still manage to look unnatural and wooden.
As an MMO the content can definitely be called limited. It is fully possible to reach max level in a single weekend without resorting to any exploits or guides(which don't exist yet), while even WoW(popularly considered an easy, streamlined levelling experience) takes at least week of solid playtime while following guides developed over months to powerlevel a character.

Again, every MMO launch has this and it will go away soon after launch, new servers have already been confirmed to be added very soon. Also, it could be your Internet, and if it is, you may need a better service provider. 3. OMG NO INNOVATION. Ok, complain about every single FPS then. Complain about the consistency of the Elder Scrolls series and the Mass Effect series, as well as Pokemon (Among many more, especially Nintendo titles). Didn't think so. Bioware EXPLICITLY said that they weren't redesigning the combat, something people over-centralize on, and what they did say was that they were adding a fourth pillar (Story) and making exploration more rewarding, something that this game succeeds at very well, with meaningful decisions within the quests. That and there are very long questlines, which personally for me, is awesome. Holocrons located within tricky to reach areas (No doubt the wiki will have the guide to reach them all already down by now though) makes exploration more rewarding, as well as receiving a generous amount of EXP for every newly discovered location. 4. OMG BAD GRAPHICS. Really? Firstly graphics are one of the least important aspects of a game and treating them with more importance than the basic mechanics instantly makes you a moron. This is a game, not a movie. Secondly, the graphics were DELIBERATELY downgraded so the game could run on slower computers, so Bioware is actually doing you a FAVOR by making the graphics wors, to a degree, it would've been nice had we been given more graphic options to the game though. The style will age better than more realistic graphics however. Examples of this include WoW and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker which still looks awesome despite being around a decade old now (At the time of this review). Besides, the animations are far better than any I've seen in an MMO (That was needed for story character animations and Bioware's "Cinematic" combat, which they talked about a lot). 5. This isn't how a Star Wars MMO should be (Something along those lines anyway). Star wars Galaxies fanboys sad about how their game is being shut down around the release of this one. This isn't another SWG, and if you thought it was you didn't listen to Bioware. It's not their fault that they decided to go in a different design direction than you. Doesn't make the game bad, it would only be bad if their design was sloppy, which it isn't. In conclusion everyone who complains about these "Issues" are stupid or didn't listen to Bioware. You can't judge an MMO at launch (I got early access and played it for around two weeks straight now at the time of this review) because there is so much in it that you can't judge it within a couple of hours and launches are particularly stressful periods for MMOs. WoW's servers literally died at their launch. Now that I;ve finished ranting and gushing over this game, let's get a little more objective and calm. The combat and skill trees are nothing new, and even though BW did let us know this in advance to be honest I did epect SOME level of innovation. The combat has style, but the same substance that WoW had, and I honestly expected some differences that I failed to find. Crafting, is... Bad. Just leave it there. Otherwise i will rage my sad little heart out. At the end of the day however there is only one flaw that matters: The lack of endgame content. I have nothing to do at the end of the game other than couple of dungeons and PvP! The meat of te game is in the story so they seem to have forgotten the endgame content, leaving me bored and frustrated after the story ended. Perhaps they should have given us some endgame story missions or something, because there's not much to do after the grind is over. My advice: Pick this up, do the class stories, then cancel your subscription. Because the stories are amazing, but there's not enough endgame content to justify sticking around after that. Expand

this game is just an overhyped wow clone. the whole design is around 7 years old and because of it lacks of delivering a new game experience, which results in a very low longtime motivation. if you plan to play it like a singleplayer game für a month, it can be fun, but other than that its just a dissapointment and no real mmog (whole game is instanced, no persistant game world).

Essentially this game is World of Warcraft in space with all the tacky Star Wars themes added on. The races are dull as can be, the voice acting is essentially pointless (just adding more nonsense to a "kill X number of enemies" type of quest".

Huge memory leaks in the game, how does it sound to have a process using 4+ GIGS of memory to run?

Latency issues when your connection rocks...20ms connection and I cant attack anything because the server stops responding.

All in all, they didnt finish this game before release, this is as horrible as AoC was. Bioware didnt even try to update the graphics from their crappy dragon age games. You should be ashamed Bioware for releasing such a terrible product. You should be equally ashamed for partnering with EA games with this, I expect within a month the normal player will be able to purchase in-game perks like warhammer online.

I'm going to talk at length about this game and why people are idiots for considering it bad.

This game is not, and never claimed to be, a revolutionary MMO. It is hotkey based, it is quest based, it is dungeon based, like pretty much every MMO ever. Like RIFT, and World of Warcraft before it, and EverQuest before it, it follows the same formula. Different setting, of course, but I'm seeing a lot of people who are just like "hurr durr WoW copy"...do you know what the word "genre" means? That's how genres work. People say the same about WoW and EverQuest...WoW did not invent this genre, it is simply the most successful game within it.

This game did not innovate as much as RIFT did, either. The only thing that separates TOR from the rest of the pack in any significant way (aside from the Star Wars IP, of course) is the voice acted story. And it is marvelous. As a lover of end-game, the dungeons and PvP and such, leveling is always the biggest, most boring pain-in-the-ass ever. I played RIFT and I loved it but I couldn't keep going because the grind to max level was just brutal. It's the same in WoW, I could never level another character because of the sheer boredom, the gameplay isn't fun.

SWTOR fixes that, in my opinion. Sure, what you're doing is as bland as in every MMO, but there is real story there. It's incredibly immersive and you care about why you have to kill 10 rats (for the typical example).

Everything else is just incredibly solid. The PvP is great, the group stuff is awesome (and there's story there as well), the combat is surprisingly diverse and there is actual thought process involved in combat in questing unlike most MMOs. Stun that guy, CC that guy, DoT that guy, knockback that guy, instead of mash damage abilities -> collect loot. The companion system is great in this regard as well.

All in all, SWTOR is another MMO that hasn't really innovated, but take it for what it is; an extremely solid game with enough innovation to stand on its own. It has fixed the biggest problem in MMORPGs in my opinion, and I can see myself playing this game for years to come (until Guild Wars 2 at least). People seem to be expecting something completely different to what people perceive to be the "WoW formula", but why fix what ain't broke?

Medjutim, kad stavis Busmana medju kepece i on ce izgledati kao dzin.

Fransiza i pedigre joj to garantuju.

I've played both Republic and Imperial sides - 3 characters to 50, and several alts levelled to 20 or so.. and I can honestly say it's some of the best storytelling in the business. I've come from an RPG background (Baldur's Gate / PST / Arcanum style), and this has been a learning experience for me - the richness and deep skill involved with PvP/Tactics and gear selection have all surprised me.. It is some hearty stuff, and if you're a Star Wars fan, you will be in HEAVEN (as I am).

Go out and get this game if you:

    1) Love Star Wars / 2) Love RPGs with great story / 3) Love competitive online PvP

    10/10 - so good!!

I really cant understand what Bioware were thinking when they created this abomination.

You cant go back, change profession, OR change faction.
Characters are boring cartoon styled figures, with few options for customization.

Gameplay is extremely linear, you are told a story, rather than letting you create your own.
Movement is also resticted but visible or invisible boundaries. If you go to Tatooine, you might think you can roam freely on that large desert planet? Nope, walk outside the marked path and you die.
Exploration is not a part of this game.

Space, another blunder. You get a nice ship, but you cant pilot it or customize it.
Spacecombat, if you can call it that, looks like something from an iPhone app.

The stories are mediocre, and doesnt suck you into the mystery and magic of being a jedi.
Graphics, that suck the life out of any graphics adapter, is just...dull.

At first I thought, World of warcraft with starwars? Sounds like crap, but then bioware pulled a bioware and messed the gameplay, the voice acting, the UI, and almost everything else up, so now it's really just A walking simulator with buggy, boring combat.

This is an absolutely rubbish MMO, even by recent standards. The gameplay is essentially World of Warcraft in Space with zero innovation. The characters are generic, the story is tepid, and the gameplay is slow and boring. It's made all the more painful when you consider Galaxies getting shut down a few weeks ago.

And yes, it's missing some stuff that we took for granted (like the dungeon finder). But guys, we're talking about an MMO. Tell me one MMO that had all the stuff that you wanted on launch day? I'm killing x number of guys, because I want to kill x number of guys. It's an MMO, a genre which I enjoyed since the first day I started playing WoW. I don't know what all the critics were looking for, really, but to me, they just seem to be trolling a good game, which is having some deserved sucess. What do you want, guys? Let's all just love low cost indie games that no one is going to play for months? Now, the game. Like I told you, yes, it has all those MMOs "must have". But so far, having played the beta and the game, I find it very stable (contrary to some reviews who find it very buggy, of some ppl who must have only played the beta, imo). Besides the graphical glitches, I never had a single dc, and was only stuck once. The combat gameplay is mostly WoW's, with a Star Wars skin. I like it, like millions of players seem to throughout the world. You have the "tank/healer/dps" trinity, but you're not so limited in terms of classes to play if you want to fulfill one of those roles. Not going to talk much about the classes, except that once you reach lvl 10, you chose one "advanced class", that being the one you're "stuck" to for the rest of the game (for instance, if you pick a Jedi Knight, once you reach lvl 10, you must be a Jedi Guardian or a Jedi Sentinel). Each of those advanced classes have 3 talent trees to pick from, like vanilla WoW. Since I consider most of the factions classes to mirror each other's gameplay (like Smugler=Sith Agent, for instance), I do consider the game to have 8 classes/gameplay types to play (the 2 advanced from the 4 original classes). The voice acting IS amazing. One of the best I've seen in years. The quests and flashpoints sometimes have some unpredictable outcome. For instance (not a spoiler), I was really amazed when a "good guy" wanted to sacrifice some of his team to get on with the quest, despite having another way to go. This game really makes you make some choices, and unlike a rpg, you can't "load back" if you regret your decision. There is really a sense of binding to your character, imo. I gave the game a 9 so far. Because of the potencial I see in it, and the fun I'm having so far. The game does deserve to be apreciated for what it is, not to be trolled just because it's a million dollar game that doesn't change the world. It's an MMO. A revolution on that genre. And, having been playing WoW for over 6 years now, I'm loving SWTOR, and I recomend it to any gamer who's not "picky", and with an open mind. If you loved KOTOR, &/or Mass Effect &/or WoW, you're gonna love it. Expand

Firstly, to blame a game for adopting an existing archetype is patently absurd. Infact I can think of no (major) game that is largely derivative of legacy titles. WoW borrowed from Everquest, which borrowed from Ultima and so-on. The fact that combat in SWTOR is similar to WoW is only symptomatic of the genre itself, not necessarily of any intellectual laziness on the part of Bioware. Conversely I would argue that SWTOR is perhaps one of the MOST ambitious MMOs to date. Integrating single player continuity with MMO social structure has never been done before, and SWTOR accomplishes it beautifully. Let alone fully voice acting the entire 1000+ hours of content is completely unheard of for an MMO! After coming off of my first day of SWTOR I feel vindicated with my decision to purchase it so early. Not only is the storyline engrossing, but the combat, UI, and metagame were better than any game I've seen to date. Those of you who dislike the conventions of MMORPGs should not be surprised when you encounter the same archetypes of play in SWTOR. If you do not enjoy leveling, min-maxing, or instancing than I would not recommend SWTOR to you. As with any MMO there is a degree of grind, but I believe Bioware has done its utmost to eliminate the drugery of grind with engaging storylines. Ultimately SWTOR is a spiritual successor to the philosophies of bioware's first Star Wars IP: KOTOR, but placed within the conventions of a modern MMORPG. A fantastic purchase, I have no doubt I will be playing this game for many months to come. Expand

Customization, crafting and many other areas need work or players just have not explored deep enough into these yet to have a sound conclusion.

I bought this game after hearing all the hype about the voice acting because I thought that it would bring a good story to an MMO, but in all reality this is still a **** mmo game where it would be better to just skip the story and go through the grind of getting to the highest level and getting the best armor.

This game promised a lot of great things a story driven mmo, the greatest pvp experience ever made by the"greatest pvp team". Needless to say what we got was nothing more than pure disappointment. The game was clearly rushed, it was visible by the quality and extensiveness of the content we had. I wont touch on bugs as it is something which is common the launch of many mmos, the only critique on that part is that there were bugs and balance issues which were pointed out during open beta that still carried over and remained in the live game for over an year.

On the PVE front we only had 2 end game operations with a unfair and bad designed loot drop system where many times a group would get useless drops which could not be used at all by any member of the raid. This was the case for the first 3 months and it was improved upon very on the course of a year.

On the PVP side of the game, the open pvp area had to be shutdown after being redesigned not even a month after release, due to a system which was unprepared to deal with unbalaced numbers of players on each side. What remained of pvp was the so called war zones only 3 for over 6 months, which had no match making system and constatly put premade groups over pug groups which be a source of great frustration for everyone, premades wouldnt get the challenge they wanted and ppugs would never have a chance of winning a match. They tried to remedy this issue with a ranked match system, which completely falied as the rewards were not substantial enough to keep premade groups interested in it.

The most frustrating thing about the PVP aspect of this game though, is class balance. Not because there is no balance, but due to the lack of active develop spent on it, at some point the game remained broken for over 7 months without a fix to the balance issue, which was basically that a class could take over 50% to up to 5 players with 1 move, in some cases depending on the gear and class difference and that would go upwards to 90-100% of damage. Needless to say pvp in this game was unplayable and frustrating for this period of time.

This lack of balance was only addressed on the release of the hutt cartel, which still did very little to remedy the situation and that class still remains the top damage dealing class on pvp on the game.

The only reason left to play the game was the personal story arc for each main class of the game, which ranked from ok, to quite intesting.

However after the game went into free to play mode, the focus on the game changed from a story driven mmo to a mini market driven one. The worst kind of market in fact, where many items that should have been unlocked by completing story arcs in the game were moved to lottery boxes, which in some case you had to buy quite a lot of in order to get the item you wanted, EVEN if you had an active subscription.

Needless to say that at this point it was obvious that the mistakes made during launch and development were too great to be remedy as for example using an unfinished version of the 3rd party engine and this game became a cash-in game for EA.

I finally decided to leave the game after the disappointment that The hutt cartel was, which created artificial caps on how much you could progress on the game, no matter how many characters you had.

In short, this game is nothing more than pure disappointment for me I saw it deforming from what could be a AAA story driven mmo into a cash-in theme park mmo with an unreasonable market place system that seriously injured the game.

It baffles me that anyone could give this game a score of over 50%.

Infact, this lack of playing is why I wanted to review: I never played this game when it was released (I was never a fan of Star Wars) so my experience is mainly from a f2p perspective. And as a f2p, this is by far one of the worst I ever played. It has almost EVERYTHING locked or limited for a f2p player so many that I can't even start mentioning it would take all the characters for this review, however for few examples we have: no bank, no inventory expansion, limited access to loot from "instances" (or flash points), limited access to pvp, limited amount of money you can have, no rested exp, limited customization for your character (only 3 races available, you can't show your titles or take off your helmet, limited amount of emotes), also your spend much more for doing simple things and have other limitations in communications (you can't whisper or trade), and my favourite: skill bars limited to two.
In other words, this is why I made this review: SWTOR potentially turns off anyone who dares to get closer and, unless you have lots of money, you'll suffer from anything because "you have to unlock". Sure it's not impossible to play as a free player and it's not entirely unplayable. But then...why do I have to play it? I know better f2p games that do limitations but are more than affordable and at least won't drive you crazy for every single limitations they will give you; my guess is because it's Star Wars and so for those who love the lore, the atmosphere, the universe itself will just want to enter for feeling like a true Jedi. Infact I dare to say the game itself IS good, although it doesn't innovate: it plays like World of Warcraft (almost literally) which means that if you despise WoW, this game is already not for you, but for the rest is actually interesting and even if I don't mind the SW universe I wanted to get into it. But the limitations just turns me off everytime and I'm sorry if I might be unfair: if you want to play a good f2p, really, look somewhere else since unless you pay a subscription (which is somewhat better considering all of the little stuff you have to buy, you can easily reach a subscription fee every month). If you want a good Star Wars game, maybe this will do despite the limitations. I just couldn't appreciate it to the fullest.
PS: if you're willing to subscribe, give it a 7-8.

At first I was hesitant because I've always played fantasy based mmorpgs and, although I enjoy the Star Wars franchise, the image of a Star Wars MMORPG didn't play well in my mind primarily based on my past familiarity with other MMORPG's. I couldn't of been more wrong.
Keeping in mind that I haven't played Knights of the old republic, both one and two, the story driven game type was rather new to me. As opposed to a lot of MMORPG's, in which the "story" is told through small, boring text which is often skipped for sake of gameplay, Star Wars: The Old Republic kept me involved and excited to pursue the story, which is astonishingly good for a "free" MMORPG. Not only is the story told to you through voices, which is awesome considering the fact that most "stories" in other MMORPG's tend to be skipped for either their quality or just plain apathy rooting from the player, the game keeps you involved by giving you a variety of answers, replies, decisions, and statements that can either make you looks like a complete bully, to a joking and friendly "sith". Occasionally, you will come across a decision that will, for example, give you the option to kill someone or let them live. Choosing the side of killing them will make you more "sith-like" and grant you "dark" points, letting them live will do the opposite and grant you "light" points. These points affect you in-game ranging from appearance changes to the loot available to you. Remember, I haven't played many story driven games so I just had to get all this excitement out.

    Now, for everything else.

The combat is pretty generic with it's tab-right click to attack system and the graphics are nothing to write home about. Additionally, some may be turned off by the fact that free players get so much less than subscription and paying players. Some of benefits, aside from different race, mount, and cosmetic options, was that paying players got the ability to move faster during the long (yet enjoyable) tutorial, which is a really small thing, of course, but it annoyed me none the less.

Overall, I'd say if you're craving for a new mmorpg and a new experience then try this game out, definitely. Even if the combat system is nothing special, the immense voice acting and story telling is.

Just like I was expecting from Bioware, an amazing compelling story line(s), great art/graphic fidelity without destroying your graphics card budget, and an overall enjoyable "journey". Just like I was expecting from Bioware, an amazing compelling story line(s), great art/graphic fidelity without destroying your graphics card budget, and an overall enjoyable "journey". I wanted to love this game, and I did when it came out, I have to admit partly because of my fanboism of Star Wars and Bioware. As I had a blast with this game for several weeks, eventually I started to get bored, when finally I found myself login in for couple hours a week, if that. See, the storyline is great, the journey through leveling is as good as it gets and the world itself is incredibly fun and full of features to explore/enjoy. However, Bioware, didn't quite get the point of a MMO-RPG, and that's that you have to have enough "compelling" content at end game, and subsequent patches of content, not only fixes. Conclusion: SWTOR would've done great as a standalone singe/multiplayer RPG game, but as a MMO it's just doesn't cut it. There was very little to do, and most importantly very little "FUN" things to do once the main storyline was over. Because of this reason I can't consciously give SWTOR a good score, because it is a MMO-RPG and as such falls very short. Is it worth the base price tag? In my opinion yes, but not the subscription. Now that it's going free to play, we will see, but at the end of the day it's not the subscription fee that drove away its players, it was the lack of content. So with or without subscription, if there is no appealing FUN content added to the game, it would still be in the situation it's right now. You do get the fun value out of the original price by playing through the story lines and leveling, that's for sure. Expand

This is one of the most disappointing games I have ever played. After playing KOTOR 1 and 2 several times, I heard about this and was so excited. Then the game was finally released, I found out that it was a subscription game, so I held off until it was free, and I did. So I played it. It starts out good, but after the first few times of leveling up, you get very bored with the game. I mean, somehow this 2011 game looks worse than KOTOR 1 which came out in 2003 if I'm not mistaken. The gameplay lacks and is way too easy. And the plot, while interesting and amazing, is predictable, only once or twice was I surprised by the story out of my nearly thousand hours of playing. While there is still that choice of what you want to say, it all turns out the same on the ending of the quests. But I do have one good thing which saves this game from being a negative review, and that is the loot. The loot, while sometimes being wasted time, is usually very rewarding. I could only recommend this game to one type of person. The die-hard Star Wars fans. Expand

I loved KOTOR 1 and 2, and since SWTOR was free, I decided to give it a whirl. Sorry I did. I wasted about 3 days and $15 on a subscription trying to get into it, but just couldn't. I'm not a huge fan of MMOs but there are a few that I love. This game is not one of them. Let me break down the good and bad points.

    GOOD

    100% Free To Play
    Both PVE and PVP choices
    Great character creation and customization
    Lots of quests
    Lots of weapons/Armor
    Pretty nice loot system
    Huge game world

    THE BAD

    Terribly outdated graphics
    Boring and repetitive side quests
All the main story lines are garbage
Poor voice acting on many characters
    Ambient sounds lack realism
Combat system is not very good
    Limited healing options when solo
Limited options to actually play solo

I guess that's about it. In closing, I'll give this horrible attempt at a Star Wars game a 4 for effort.

If you care about PvP, class balance or even top PvE content this is the worst game you can imagine. Incredibly bad balance across the board, out of touch developers and developers who as of now even insults it's own playerbase. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

If you like to buy fluffy stuff for real life money, then maybe this is for you.

This game is at the same time grandiose in scale and vision, and the pinnacle of mediocrity in execution. It is truly one of a kind, and never shall anything quite like it be created ever again. To understand the peculiar way the stars aligned to make this game possible, let's recap the story of its creation:

In the beginning was the legendary Bioware game Knights Of The Old Republic (2003). This game was a fantastic achievement at the time, and it remains an enjoyable game to this day (if you can look past the parts that are a bit dated for obvious reasons).

Millions of fans wanted wanted more KOTOR, and another studio was tasked with creating a sequel. The sequel turned out good but not fantastic, and it clearly suffered from being forced out the door before it was ready. The dream of Bioware some day returning to give us a REAL sequel stayed alive in the hearts of fans for years.

Then WoW happened, and game developers saw that this new MMO thing could rake in money like there was no tomorrow. Everyone wanted a piece of that action! Bioware was no exception, and they knew you have to bet big to win big, so they gambled some serious BIG MONEY on their first MMO.

This was a project that couldn't afford to fail, so they did what people always do when failure isn't an option - they bet on what they perceive to be A Sure Thing (TM).

People LOVE WoW, people LOVE Star Wars, and people LOVE Knights Of The Old Republic too! Put these three things together, supercharge with stratospheric production value, and boom, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?!!

Quite a lot, as things turned out...

The worst problem with SW:KOTOR, is that it feels forced as an MMO; it clearly has the soul of a single player game. The MMO aspects of the game simply aren't very impressive. And when judged as a single player game, it's unfortunately much worse than it could have been if it hadn't been forced into the MMO mold in the first place.

It's a BIG game though, all that money spent sure bought a metric F-ton of lovingly crafted content. But it's all MEDIOCRE! The story is mediocre, the gameplay is mediocre, the visuals are mediocre.

This can't really be blamed on lack of trying, the game oozes of love and care! It's clear everyone involved gave it their very best!

But they had too many checkboxes to tick, and the game is an Overconstrained Design as a result. They were tasked with creating something that was fully WoW *and* fully Star Wars *and* fully Knights Of The Old Republic, all at the same time. They were given the resources to pull it off, but were then clearly hampered with a risk averse leadership that wished to play it safe.

The result was a mess. And a surprisingly dull gaming experience. Players went into it expecting to have their minds blown, got disappointed, and quit. The scores of servers Bioware started out with were emptying out fast, and many players who wanted to play after all got stuck in ghost towns.

But Bioware refused to admit defeat, and took way too long to merge servers. When they finally did, it was more or less too late, the remaining population was low. Certainly far lower than they had hoped for at first.

Heads rolled, the team that created the game was replaced because "it takes a different skill set to run an MMO from creating one", as Bioware diplomatically put it. The new team set out to convert it to the free-to-play model to pull in more players. But they didn't want to lose the few subscribers they had, so they came up with a convoluted 3-tier hybrid pay model where you can play most of the game for free, but are nagged to subscribe and nickled-and-dimed for ridiculous little things like having to pay to hide your helmet (!).

All that said, the game isn't BAD, it's just not all that good either. And it needed it be AWESOME to live up to expectations from players and investors alike.

It has been polished and improved a lot over the years, and at this point it is without a doubt the finest free-to-play single-player "MMO" experience out there! If you want to waste some time grinding mobs mindlessly and being rewarded with snips of a little light heroic story, then this is your game! All for free!

I haven't actually paid a single cent for this game, but I have played three characters to level 50, and have three more at level 15 waiting to go when I have some time to waste. Tier 1 free-to-play players actually only get 2 character slots, but I preordered the game and ended up being registered as a former paying customer, which elevates me to tier 2. This in spite of the fact I canceled my preorder in disappointment after trying the early access...

Sometimes you only want to play a dumb bog-standard mob-grinding MMO to give your brain a break for an hour or two. This is just the game for it. It beats anything in the "market" for games you care enough to play once in a while, but not enough to actually pay for.

Which must be considered a colossal failure.

Aesthethics aside, the game had a far amount of enjoyment, less so for returning players, but very much so for new to the game.

It's respectable even as creaky and out of date as it is. Hopefully, there will be a decent, up to date successor eventually.

Gameplay: Tab Target. No Action Dynamic Combat :( Stiff Animations & Ctrls. Idle animation gives Statue look. Theme Park design = Many loading screens :/
Storyline: Class Storylines are Immersive. They end to 3.0 :( Can go through as F2P.
Difficulty: Blindfolded. Eaware applied big storyline / world combat Nerfs :/
Grind: None & Dumb Prog. changes by 'lost' Dev crew after 2015 made Raids to be semi pointless & also Pvp. They even released Raid in pieces :D :(
Lil bit of my Swtor story & some Swtor's History:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hardest Review to write ever since started to write after jumped to Pc world in 2004. Cause of Commitment & love poured down to SWTOR from 1st beta day & launch at Dec 2011. Continuous Sub to Q1 2016. Resub at Q2 2018 & Q4 2019, but couldn't longer than Few hrs cause of Nerfed Content & Game-Engine :( No Sub Renewal. Been Following Development & still no resub & relogin worthy news :/ Talent Trees Axed & Traveling got nerfed for Lazies from 3.0 forward :/ Combat Nerfed at 5.0 & Forward :/ Teleporting to Planet's HC Missions & many other Dumb gameplay Nerfs.

Few years i was part of 2x good Guilds. Longer on Progenitor after many servers like loved Rp-Pvp that i loved vanished in result of 1st servers Merge :( Eaware acquired too many SMALL Servers in Early Days.. Forceflux Guild on Progenitor had many fine people. We did prog. Raiding, premade Pvp trips (also relaxed PvP = No veins popping out) & Guild meetups at Guild ship. Good World Pvp Memories On PvP Server before WPvP was removed cause of old Game-Engine :( Later our guild & Veterans had the same fate as tons of others from Na & EU :( Started at 5.0 & esp. from 5.0 forward. REASON: Charles "sleeky smile" Boyd & LDR after to blame for lack of development & bad calls :( Also LACK of Focus to Feedback & no Survey given out for Plrs to Fill.
GOOD Suggestions Ignored by Devs since launch:
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
On official forum (where CAN'T write if not feeding EA w monthly sub) There's over 10x good Suggestions. Improving Galactic Starfighter, Many Day & Night Cycle Requests to bring more 'LIFE' (Many Mmo's have it) into SWTOR. Interactable Furniture to Hubs (Cantinas & Fleet).. Many Requests for both mini-games Dejarik & Pazaak. Mini-Games could be played in big Cantinas. SWG has them, but Neither in Swtor :( Swtor that's made to Outdated Hero Engine & still running on fumes when near Q4 2020. Much wanted Day & Night Cycle since 2012: Each planet to have their Lore-specific Day-Night cycle & each bogey to behave accordingly. Same with timed Vendors & or NPCs. Weather should influence Planets more often.
IMAGINE Raining in Nar Shaddaa & brings Blade Runner vibes. Sadly not there.. No Day & Night Cycle :( ESO, Wow & FFIXV has proper Weather & D&N Cycle. IF ONLY SWTOR had been made w CryEngine or Frostbite Game-Engine.. *Drools when thinks of images.*
Changes that DROVE Away Veterans w real Eyesight:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From 3.0 forward: Swtor's Skeleton Dev crew made Bad Development calls, slow pacing & no comms with their Customers :( (Sry player base) Command Lvls & RNG Grind.. Dumb moves to start Single Char's Storyline @mind numbing KOTFE & KOTET :/ Those Expansions w many chapters having mind seizures cause too many scripted parts where Sky Troopers jumping down. Just to be put down Fast. Y most plrs use OP Companion after Comps they turned Invincible :( Changes drove away Single Plr & Group Plrs. I'm one of Old School plrs who LOVED to Equip your comp. before got ruined to Terminator mode (tank, heal & dps) & their modding Vanished :( Eaware's Skeleton Crew at Meetup during pre 5.0 patching: - Let's give RNG to everything - Both PVE & PVP. What could possibly go wrong ? Was Sad to Witness.."
More DUMB Changes without Feedback Survey to Plrs:
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I & hundreds of others got Attached to our Characters & their Respective Factions that we spent Years with. At mind numbing KOTFE all of that VANISHED cause of dumb Charles "sleeky smile" Boyd & his few Skeleton Devs working in HQ's Broom Closet :( REASON: A new totally Random & OP as He** Faction suddenly invades the Galaxy while our characters are in a Coma. Making the Jedi, Sith,Republic & every accomplishment our chars made completely pointless & irrelevant. In my eyes that made years of their writing Meaningless..
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Immersion breaking Cutscenes like DW Char uses only other weapon from 2x :o :( I can't recommend newcomers (New Souls to be Milked by EA) to Sub cause you can do all Storylines without Feeding EA. [Link omitted per site rules]

This game has brought me an important insight. How does a game make you "feel" like a Jedi? And the answer was unexpected for me. It's the music. And this game delivers.
This is basically a game of two halves. One is a story driven RPG, one is an MMO. The story would have been a much better fit on a different type of game. It is good. I just know about the Jedi Consular and the Sith

I just know about the Jedi Consular and the Sith Inquisitor, and I feel they are both very adequate and satisfying. I imagine that's why you would play a Star Wars game. To be a Jedi. Or a Sith
The MMO part is simply not for me. It is very similar to WoW. While some details maybe felt better I think it was a mistake to try to combine these 2 games. You have to get through the gameplay to get to the story and it is hardly worth it. It was dated when it came out, I would prefer something forward looking

Great fun for the first playthrough. The combat response was horrible on launch as was endgame. Too much money and time was devoted to voice acting and not enough to the other areas of this WOW clone. A Star Wars MMO needs to launch with amazing space combat to set it apart. This game failed on almost every front.

At it's most basic, SWTOR is WoW with a different coat of paint. For an alleged $200 million budget it's shameful what Bioware has done with this, not taking a single risk or taking advantage of outstanding features anything other then WoW had (no Global friends list is bad enough, but no sidekick feature is even worse). Gameplay is very much by the numbers with a bias towards the NPC enemies if you're evenly matched. There's been so many fights I've gone into with my Bounty Hunter at even level with decent equipment and still been flattened.
Speaking of equipment, the in-game store added after the change to F2P is an embarrassment, mostly working on random boxes that frequently give you very little with a few 'ok' sets of armour that need modifications adding to them before they can be useful and other bits and bobs.
I came to this game after City of Heroes shut down. For the longest time, I got on ok with the game as I enjoyed some of the story, but as time progressed I realized just how terrible this game is and wouldn't recommend it at all.

I define games by how much they don't irritate me as well as how much fun they are. This is an MMO, and repetition is part of daily life - therfore cutting down on the daily grind is important. So here are some criticisms. TRANSIT - I think my biggest gripe was with getting from A to B. The only automation was in the form of auto-forward (NUMLOCK) but you still needed to steer manually, and the distances were huge. Furthermore your path can be blocked by enemies who don't seem to have any purpose other than to annoy you. I discovered that sometimes the quickest way to get to your destination was to deliberately get killed and respawn. As for the taxis, I would go to the toilet only to come back and see that I was still in the taxi and had not reached my destination. Of course I get to see the beautiful environments but it gets boring after the first time, I just want to reach my destination! LOOT ROLLING - This has got to be one of the worst systems ever for distributing loot. The number of abusers of the system is ridiculous. I gave up on flashpoints and world bosses because of this stupid system. AUTO PVP FLAG - I wanted to play on the PVE server at first, but for some reason, every time I healed someone or shielded them, my PVP flag would turn on, simply because the person I healed had theirs on. I just kept thinking to myself, "What is this nonsense?" I understand the loophole in PVP where a non-flagged healer could heal a PVPer, but I'm automatically guilty for assisting my team mate in a quest? PRICE-PER-UNIT - The auction house did not have a price-per-unit column. I got tired of getting my calculator out to find out the price per unit. OTHER ISSUES - No barber. No interplanetary chat so it can be hard to recruit for the heroic missions. Lack of multiple windows (for shops, character stats, etc) - only 2 maximum at a time - and they close inconveniently when you try to get two particular windows open......... Some say the F2P game is just a trial - well I went through the trial and decided it was just not for me. Think this is the first BioWare game I failed to complete. Expand

It's also enjoyable to take part in if your co-opting with your friends, being able to participate in conversations with other players is certainly innovative. But... it's not perfect, and there are several parts of the game that leave me scratching my head, such as certain quest giving npcs which are solo/same class only, meaning your friends can't take part in the dialogue.

I play this as a Free-to-Play game, I'm not a subscriber. As a Free-to-Play game the restrictions are not heavy, if anything they are rather generous, with the max level you can reach being 50 for F2P (60 for subs). But perhaps the most criminal aspect of this game is their support for F2P players. There is no support for guys like me, even ones with preferred status (something you get when you buy off the market). I have never known a game to completely shut off any customer support to F2P players, and not just that, but to do it to even preferred status players. It's a complete joke and the only reason why I'm not giving this an 8. Bioware is not exactly known for its stellar support, nor is EA, but they've gone too far this time. Your pretty much screwed if you run into a bug, a technical issue or even have trouble logging in (something I've had).

But soon as you hit max level the game fizzles out.

I played for 13.5 months from release to after first year and saw many empty promises and broken promises come and go.

I had a 50 Trooper, 50 Bounty Hunter, 50 Sage, 50 Scoundrel, and 50 Jedi Knight and was closing in on hitting level 50 Sniper and Inquisitor. So not like I didnt play this game completely before coming to my final conclusion.

Anyone interested in this game, do yourself a favor, play 1-50 in F2P and then move onto the next game.
Avoid buying any Cartel items as they are not needed and only designed to grab more money from Subscribers and F2P players in the short term.
Title would have been better off as a Single player game KotOR3 or designed by a different developer and distributor.

I wanted to love this game
All I ended up is hating EA to the point I will not support their company anymore.

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.

I wound up bailing out on Star Wars: The Old Republic well before hitting the level cap, but not before digging into it more so than any other MMO I've played. Even if it is an unhappy marriage between two wildly different game types, the fact that it kept me hooked for so long at least counts for something.

A good game. It pays excellent homage to the film series (even though it's set before the movies), and is a really solid MMO.
