Finally a good RPG with story and moral choices. I don't care it's MMO, i want a decent single player game with character i can roleplay and with companions i can talk to. This game has both. Star wars unvierse feels very real in this game. Dungeons are funny, because they contain dialogues and epic stories.

Some of the negative reviews are quite frankly outright lies. Most likely fanboys of That Other Game. Anyways, this is the MMO we gamers have been waiting for. The graphics are quite good, far better than WoW without hindering performance. Most likely fanboys of That Other Game. Anyways, this is the MMO we gamers have been waiting for. The graphics are quite good, far better than WoW without hindering performance. The voice acting is top notch, so I actually stop to listen to the quest, unlike other games where I ignore the wall of text and just click "accept". Story is the key, bread and butter, whatever you want to call it for SWTOR. Every class as a storyline consisting of a prologue and 3 chapters, starting at level 1 and ending at 50. Each planet has a main storyline with many having a Bonus Series for when you gain higher levels. These Bonus Series are not rehashing existing areas or quests, but takes you to new areas on the planet you visited at a previous time. Once you get your ship, you have optional Space Missions (with dailies) you can do if you want a change of pace from questing. The companions are more than just "pets" as they can fill various roles and each have their own personalities (with quest lines). Example of this is we lost our healer to a disconnect during a flashpoint, but we used a healer companion and finished the flashpoint (instance). Boss fights are more than just "don't stand in the fire, Tank n Spank". One flashpoint actually doesn't have bosses (cept 1 at the end). The game is rich in lore for those that played Knights of the Old Republic, but for those that didn't you still can enjoy all the lore regardless. Explorer types can be rewarded by finding datacrons scattered on every planet, each granting a permanent bonus. Whenever you find a key location, datacron or kill a new beast for the 1st time you unlock a codex entry granting you xp and a lore entry.

PvP'ers will be happy with the warzones as they offer experience, credits and bonus depending on how you perform. Do better in PvP you get more rewards at the end of the match. Plus PvP items can be acquired as early as 20 and can be vendored if you no longer want them. No more outgrown items gathering dust in your banks! A lot of the gear is customazable, so that the days of wearing some ugly item just because of the stats are gone. As you level up just put in higher modifications and the armor/damage of the items scales up. Yes this also includes lightsaber and blaster bolt colors as well.

Crafting does not require you stand in front of a table making X bracers for an hour to skill up. Simply send out companions on crew skill tasks to gather mats or craft for you while you continue... whatever you want to continue. You can gather in the field if you run across mats, but it's a nice option that if you are missing a specific mat, you can simply send a crewman out and (after a time delay) you get your mats.

A fantastic game that you must play to believe. One of the rare times that a game has actually lived up to the hype.

By far, the best MMORPG I have ever played. The combat is beautiful and smooth, and the graphics are by far the best in the MMORPG genre, in my opinion. It is not flashy and unnecessary, it is smooth and beautiful. All-in-all, if you are looking into a star wars game, an mmo, and RPG, a futuristic game, a co-op game.. Etc! The next king of the MMO! Before I play this game, I was determined to never play a game with a monthly subscription . My friend give me a 7 days trial period and i've played 12 hours each day of the week.. This MMO takes the best of WoW with new feature and beautiful environment to make a game almost perfect! The game have a lot of dialogue and quests! I recommend it !

I was more than happy to fork out the cash for the game and can envision playing this for months on end. I've seen endless pages of criticism about SWTOR, but come on, it's a great game, it lures in newbs (like myself) and provides them with a fascinating look at Star Wars in a whole new way. I loved the old single player games like Knights of the Old Republic, so I guess it makes sense that I'll love this as well. For the seasoned MMO'ers there will always be something to b*tch and moan about... fickle bunch that they are. Stop feeling so damn entitled people and be thankful for what you have.

Love this game, love the action, love the storytelling and love the interaction with fellow gamers and fellow Star Wars fans. Good job, Bioware.

As someone who has played every MMO that has released since the original Everquest, I can tell you the learning curve small, the immersion level is great, and unless your only goal is to max as fast as possible, you will enjoy this game. On the plus side, the original development team is still working on this game and the staff has not been reduced, which has produced constant updates with LARGE AMOUNTS of content, unlike some games which would make you pay for DLC or an Expansion. I've played Guild Wars 2 for a few years now, along with the expansion Heart of Thorns. Decided to take a break from GW2 because the expansion felt like more of a job than a game. Wiping every event, boss, and even exploring became really tiresome. Still a good game, but I'm burnt out on GW2. I played PvE, WvW, and dungeons. Fractals were way too hard.

I played World of Warcraft to level 65 as a tank. Really enjoyed it. Stopped playing because I couldn't find a good guild, so most of the time I was soloing, except for dungeons. Never tried raids of PvP.

I'm enjoying this game a lot. The story, environments, and characters make the game really immersive. This game is great for players like me who are casual most of the time, but still want to play dungeons, raids, and PvP when they choose. I've found that players are easy to group-up with for doing story missions, or world bosses.

I don't know how to describe it, but this is my kind of MMORPG. It's fun and relaxing to play. This game seems to be getting better and better with time.

Cons: As a subscriber there are very few cons, but some of the UI takes some time getting used to. I read reviews about server lag, but it has been pretty mild at this point. Mail should go right to the player instead of a mailbox; it's Star Wars. I wish they had a group finder for other aspects of the game, like PvE, but typing in chat isn't too bad.

I'll update my review as time goes on.

April 2016: This is one of my favorite games. At the end of Shadow or Reven and I'm having a great time. My favorite MMORPG. Thank you Bioware. Can't wait to try Knights of the Fallen Empire.

The combat is always fun because you feel like their is a reason behind every fight. When comparing to games such as World of Warcraft, there is a huge difference in quality. WOW is boring because the whole game is basically one massive grind. However TOR has variety in companions, building frienships and weapons and armour. In terms of PvP and group combat, I am happy to say that the game works incredibly well. The group warzones in PvP all feel different from eachother and make epic battle grounds. For groups in the story, the conversation point system keeps everyone involved and the flashpoints arebrilliant for high-level players. Overall, I have no doubt in saying that this is the best MMO available. Move over WOW and Guild Wars. Expand

Many people dont like that its a WoW clone with a singleplayer compo ent but that is exactly what attracted me to it.
Most MMO lack purpose and after you leveled your character to the level cap your only option is to go PvP-ing which i hate and will never understand.
After you create a character you are thrown at the start of your character next adventure. I say next because most classes seem expirianced when you start and you don't feel like a kid thrown in the world with a wooden stick. You can see that your character did something before the events of the story and this is only another adventure on the way. That is specially noticable with trooper, smuggle and agent classes.
There is also legacy which lets you connect your characters in a family tree as relatives, allies, spouses or rivals. You can unlock various perks for all of your characters that way.

It recently went free to play and I can say that I was a little bit disappointed with the amoint of restrictions but that disappointment was gone when I discovered that on The Cartel Market you can buy whatever you liked without spending money on something you dont want or consider unimportant. The prices are affordable too. For 20 dollars I bought 3 packs that unlock various things including speeder training, rocket boots for my entire legacy, various armor sets or pieces etc.

I really think this deserved better user score since most of the reviewers give 0 score because they disliked only one thing in the game.

Some of the classes belong to the most fun classes of all mmorpg, pvp games are fun, there is a "tie fighter game in swtor" etc.

I have played most of the popular mmorpg (I started with Ultima Online, DAoC, WoW, AC, AC2, EQ1, EQ2, GW2, Rift, Tera, etc. etc.) and swtor definitely belongs to the best of these. You should of course like RPG's with a story and not just simple grind games.

Excellent MMO game. Enjoyable endgame, the new Space Combat is very fun, and the storylines are very well written.. Character customization could admittedly be better, and the restrictions for Free-to-Play members can be rough. But, if you enjoy Star Wars, endgame Raiding, space combat, or games with a story, you won't regret spending time with SWTOR.

The music is wonderful and stays true to Star Wars, the graphics are a little bit cartoonish but Bioware has said so it doesn't look dated in 4 years and I'd say it's aged really well so far. The choices for PVP has grown lately Bioware is constantly updating SWTOR with more PVP, story, and expansions.

I've been playing MMORPGs for 14 years and I've never playing anything like SWTOR that really got me into the game and addicted and not often enough can a game do that, SWTOR is simply fun I actually have fun and a good time while playing this, it doesn't feel grindy and I always can't wait to get to the next quest, I mostly like SWTOR because of the role playing. So don't judge this game by the free to play experience if your willing to shell out some cash for the subscription it's worth it, subscribers get more experience and that alone is worth it.

I highly recommend Star Wars: The Old Republic.

To put it simply, the game is just superb. Everything is working properly and carried out well. The stories of each class grip you firmly as they take you in to the world of star wars. Plenty of endgame material too so no need to worry about that. Really had (and still having) a blast playing this game!

This is my first review, but I feel for the first time in a while, that I want to express how amazing this game is. I have played almost every mmo, I have owned almost every system, and lately I have been feeling really unsatisfied with the value of games. I just bought evolve on the ps4 and that was sort of my last straw. I used to play wow and for a few years and I felt like I got a good value out of that game, which is the bar I compare other mmos too. So let me say that this game is on an entirely different level than wow, it is so much better and more complete. This may be one of the best games I have ever played. If this game was launched as a single player game, I would have bought it. The fact that it is also an mmo, just amplifies the awesomeness. For $15 a month, entertainment does not get much cheaper. Give this game a shot, it has a f2p option and its just too good to miss out on. This game is nothing like your standard mmos, the depth is out of this world. The amount of content available is incredible. You can get lost in almost any aspect of this game: decorating your stronghold, space fighter, pvp, pve, the story, crafting, or just exploring this cool world.

For the many of us out there that have been looking for a game that is not just great, but actually worth the price of admission. Look no further, this is it.

Somehow this made Star Wars shine in a light that you can just imagine being real and it inspires imagination in you in how much you want to be in THAT world. They are definitely onto something with the player makes the decisions for light and dark side and they don't hold back on the punches for either side. This game makes it seem like Star Wars is actually possible in some galaxy or universe and hopefully at some point this one. The story telling is delicious and for the time that this game came out, the best they could have done in syncing it with actual gameplay. I see the potential in this game and for the creators to take the perfect things of the game and will use it in the future for ever greater feeling for being apart of the world. Very fun to play stoned lol. Sure there are things I don't like about this game, for one the amount of grinding/ traveling back and forth for quests. But the reason this is so I suppose is to make the dialogue that much more enthralling somehow. I Hope that these guys continue making more of these Star Wars games because I never want it to end. I want to always have that power of actually turning and becoming a sith. One of the things that sets The Old Republic apart from other MMORPGs is its rich and detailed storytelling. The game features fully voiced dialogue for all characters, which really helps bring the world to life and makes you feel like you're a part of the action. Each character has their own unique story, and the choices you make throughout the game can have lasting consequences.

The gameplay in The Old Republic is also top-notch. There are eight different classes to choose from, each with their own unique abilities and playstyles. Whether you prefer ranged combat, melee combat, or healing/support roles, there's a class that will suit your playstyle.

Another great feature of The Old Republic is its focus on player choice. You can customize your character's appearance, choose their skills and abilities, and even make moral decisions that will affect your character's alignment and reputation. This gives players a sense of agency and ownership over their characters, which can be incredibly rewarding.

Overall, Star Wars: The Old Republic is a fantastic game that offers hours of immersive gameplay and storytelling. Whether you're a die-hard Star Wars fan or just looking for a great MMORPG, this game is definitely worth checking out.

Personally, I'm enjoying SWTOR very much. Yes, it has "kill x" quests, even those are optional objectives. Yes, it is not that diferent from WoW's gameplay. Yes, the classes are imbalanced. And yes, it's missing some stuff that we took for granted (like the dungeon finder). But guys, we're talking about an MMO. Tell me one MMO that had all the stuff that you wanted on launch day? I'm killing x number of guys, because I want to kill x number of guys. It's an MMO, a genre which I enjoyed since the first day I started playing WoW. I don't know what all the critics were looking for, really, but to me, they just seem to be trolling a good game, which is having some deserved sucess. What do you want, guys? Let's all just love low cost indie games that no one is going to play for months? Now, the game. Like I told you, yes, it has all those MMOs "must have". But so far, having played the beta and the game, I find it very stable (contrary to some reviews who find it very buggy, of some ppl who must have only played the beta, imo). Besides the graphical glitches, I never had a single dc, and was only stuck once. The combat gameplay is mostly WoW's, with a Star Wars skin. I like it, like millions of players seem to throughout the world. You have the "tank/healer/dps" trinity, but you're not so limited in terms of classes to play if you want to fulfill one of those roles. Not going to talk much about the classes, except that once you reach lvl 10, you chose one "advanced class", that being the one you're "stuck" to for the rest of the game (for instance, if you pick a Jedi Knight, once you reach lvl 10, you must be a Jedi Guardian or a Jedi Sentinel). Each of those advanced classes have 3 talent trees to pick from, like vanilla WoW. Since I consider most of the factions classes to mirror each other's gameplay (like Smugler=Sith Agent, for instance), I do consider the game to have 8 classes/gameplay types to play (the 2 advanced from the 4 original classes). The voice acting IS amazing. One of the best I've seen in years. The quests and flashpoints sometimes have some unpredictable outcome. For instance (not a spoiler), I was really amazed when a "good guy" wanted to sacrifice some of his team to get on with the quest, despite having another way to go. This game really makes you make some choices, and unlike a rpg, you can't "load back" if you regret your decision. There is really a sense of binding to your character, imo. I gave the game a 9 so far. Because of the potencial I see in it, and the fun I'm having so far. The game does deserve to be apreciated for what it is, not to be trolled just because it's a million dollar game that doesn't change the world. It's an MMO. A revolution on that genre. And, having been playing WoW for over 6 years now, I'm loving SWTOR, and I recomend it to any gamer who's not "picky", and with an open mind. If you loved KOTOR, &/or Mass Effect &/or WoW, you're gonna love it. Expand

Space combat is a nice throwback to rebel assault - great game. Although I would like to see something a bit deeper - maybe something closer to a starfox feel, but there are plans to improve it at the moment.
Like most popular new games there are a lot of negative comments out there. I think this is common everywhere. Reading some of the critic reviews will give you a better insight if this game is for you or not.

The voiced dialogue and cut scenes fix that problem. Also the introduction of a social skill that you level through doing group dialogue keeps all the talking interesting from a game mechanics perspective. So, strong single player. Strong multi-palyer. If you enjoy the Mass Effect series, and you like Star Wars, this is the game for you.

The influence of Mass Effect on this game is extremely obvious, from the conversation choices, to companion relationships, to the immersive storyline. I've put around 40 hours into the game so far, and am a little over half way to the level cap. From what I've heard, I will be playing for around 40-60 more hours until I reach that. 100 hours in one game is a pretty damn long time, especially considering that I have no even touched PvP, and there will be plenty more content opened up when I do hit that cap.

I don't want to go on for too long, because there are so many other reviews for this game already out there, but I just want to say that SWTOR is a game-changer IMO- this coming from someone who's not a big fan of MMORPGs, and who has never played WoW. My fiancee and I have fallen in love with this game, and look forward to furthering the story and progressing our characters each day. It's just plain fun, without that terrible grinding feeling that many MMOs give.

The game doesn't revolutionnize anything.. But it does a great job at doing everything right. Keep hearing people saying this is not an MMO.. Those people haven't bothered trying to play the game with others, it's a blast !

There is an enormous amount of content in this game and gameplay is always fun. They did a really well job. There are negative views about this game as the E3 trailer was spectacular and people believed that this game would be something beyond the current generation of games.

A solid MMO with that special Bioware storytelling magic added on. SWTOR is a ton of fun and offers some of the most rewarding MMO questing to date. The addition of complex class-specific storylines and moral choices with light-side/dark-side points adds an element to the MMO questing experience that is unlike any other game.

Bottom line on TOR is that if you love BioWare style storytelling, and don't absolutely loathe traditional themepark MMO mechanics, you will probably like this game, maybe even love it. But if you think story doesn't belong in MMOs, or themeparks suck, look elsewhere.

The game has a lot of stock MMO elements but these are generally well-done. The UI is imperfect, and needs improvement. Expand

First off I have been playing MMO's for 13 years. Started with Everquest and moved onto many others through the years including Shadowbane, Final Fantasy XI, SWG, DDO, Vanguard, WOW (not much time spent in WOW) and Everquest 2. I show the games I have played so anyone that reads knows I am not just blowing smoke.

About 2 years ago I just did not feel like playing MMO's anymore, I went to log into a game one evening and just said to myself that this is just really not fun anymore. That night I canceled my active subs to the 2 games I was currently playing. Before that time I was really looking forward to SWTOR and even after I decided to quit MMO's I still followed the development off and on. I did go ahead and pre-order a couple of days after it was announced, I was really hoping that the game would reignite my passion for this genre.

During my hiatus from MMO's I had some time to think about why I just did not want to play them anymore and what made me play them in the first place. Everquest and Final Fantasy XI to such a long time to level that you could go days without feeling like you achieved anything but I absolutely loved the communities. Shadowbane was just flat out fun to play when you felt like some PVP but that was it, no dungeons, economy was crap etc... DDO had awesome dungeons but nothing else. SWG was fun until they screwed it up with their improvements but could not attain mass appeal mostly because of the sandbox design, most people just do not want that. WOW was never really given a chance by me, I have the collector's edition still sitting on my shelf. I played for about 2 weeks and quit because of the obnoxious players that happened to choose the same server as myself. Everquest 2 was fun but I think this is when I started feeling like it was just not fun anymore.

Having pre-ordered I was able to begin playing on day one of early access. Having played since the 13th I can honestly say that SWTOR has definitely brought the spark back. I cannot wait to get home from work to log in. Does it have some problems, yes but anyone who has ever played an MMO knows that there will be problems and with every new piece of content more problems will surface. Nature of the beast. The awesome definitely outweighs the problems.

    Cons:
Ability animation lag. Cannot see this bug lasting much longer, not a game breaking bug but one that hampers enjoyment.

GTN needs some refinement, it is passable for now but would like to see it improved.

The UI needs to be customizable. I am running this on a laptop with an odd resolution, this causes some windows and bars to overlap oddly.

Chat Bubbles would be a nice addition.

The LFG tool is there, just type LFG in the search and it brings up everybody with their tag on but I would like to see this improved upon as a lot of people simply don't know you can do that.

Jumping ability seems clunky and sluggish, one night I can get a datacron on the first try, the next I feel like I forgot how to jump onto a box.

    Pros:
This is the first time with regards to my mmo characters that I feel like I am truly a hero and not just mage number 1100 or some Paladin who is not awesome enough to be protecting the king. The head of the Jedi Order actually asked to see me at level 3. Awesome.

I can honestly say that I have not even so much as thought about looking at my experience bar, I am pleasantly surprised when I find the level up graphic over my head. That is saying something in the MMO world.

Great balance between solo and group content. This past weekend I ran in a group all day Saturday, it was so much fun. Sunday I had to be on call for work so I knew I may have to stop playing at any second so I ran solo that day while having a blast hunting for datacrons with other people and chatting it up on General and through Whispers.

I can honestly say I have not group this much since playing Final Fantasy XI when you had to have a full group to kill anything that conned hard or above.

In every area of the planets I quest on I see people running around questing but I have not had to fight over a spawn once. Actually if I or someone else sees we are on the same objective we give a quick whisper to make sure and just group up. Much fun.

The boss battles in the flashpoints have been a blast, you fight one who is a tank and spank and go into the next one thinking the same and bam, the boss disappears and you have to start dodging fireballs. Good times.

Crafting has been fun, still too early to see how much money can be made and what will sell but I am very much enjoying the mechanics.

This is starting to get fairly long so I will stop. I have to say thank you Bioware, this is the game for me and I will be here for a good long while. I am no blind fanboy but I know what I likes and I likes the game.

Though I do not dispute the fact that this game is not for everyone (because its an MMO and play as such), I also know trolls will be trolls, and some of the reviews for this game were only created to instill doubt and conflict. I'll lay it out honestly. SWTOR doesn't do a whole lot to push the genre forward with this game, however, what Bioware did, they did beautifully and a fully voiced experience should become the new standard for AAA MMO titles. If you are a fan of MMO's, you'll feel right at home. If you're a fan of epic star wars adventures with interactive cinematic storytelling, you'll be in heaven. Bioware managed to launch this behemoth with no downtime, no server lag with the occasional queue for some of the highest populated servers. Smoothest MMO launch this fella has ever experienced. Their do-diligence really paid off here for the customer, and I appreciate that Bioware found success where 99% of MMO launches have failed. BioWare has added a solid addition into the MMO market, rich with plot, making it compelling to level up multiple alts just to see all the different story arcs, as well as made a pretty smooth launch. The Star Wars universe feels alive as you progress your way through dialogues where your choices affect your character for the rest of your playing experience, with my Jedi Knight still being plagued by a "misguided" Dark Side decision I made early in the game.

As I said, though, the game isn't perfect, and I will definitely put some criticism in here that there are some bugs that really should have been worked out in beta. Graphical glitches that make it seem that there's a laser light show going off behind you and certain abilities, like sending off your companion to sell your gray items, only work sporadically. The auction house system's UI is extremely user unfriendly, as well. I'm not one to use a lot of mods in MMO's, as I feel in order to claim yourself as being a good player, you should be able to use the default UI, but if that AH doesn't get improved, as soon as the mod market is open, I'll definitely be getting one for that.

Definitely worth checking out if you want to try an MMO or absolutely love Star Wars, there's nothing like the thrill of getting your first lightsaber...

The sheer size of the game gives you the freedom to go anywhere you would want to as a Star Wars fan, and the missions that accompany this universe are actually quite addictive rather than repetitive. The combat is still pretty good, and it far outranks the button mashing fps games of today's world. The plots have an epic feel to them, however, much like the companions, they lack the personal feel that was present in the KOTOR games. Besides that point though, I have to say that Bioware have still got it, and TOR is an impressive and inventive game. However, I believe it would have fared better as just an RPG, rather than an MMORPG, as it would have allowed more room for the personal points of KOTOR to be integrated into it. Expand

4- great stories: all quests are voice acted. this forces you to slow down and actually participate in the story. while i didn't see the significance of such a decision initially, after a few days of play, i get it. it breaks up the questing so you don't feel like you just running on a tread mill of "go here, do this". and you have options that allow you to customize your interaction in a manner consistent with your character concept. some folks have complained that wanting to get light/dark points forces you to answer a certain way, but they're missing the point. you have ample opportunity for light/dark points. you don't HAVE to respond in a way that will get you min/maxed. so yes, you DO have a choice about your interaction. 5- crafting and missions are pretty cool. you can send your minions off to do things for you and secure resources that way. 6- the minions are great. they make a significant contribution to your efforts, allowing you to do things you could not other do. they also have favor points you can build up to increase their loyalty and effectiveness. there are even romantic options with some of them and, according to bioware, more to come. 7- the light/dark points add an extra layer to an already mult-layered game. there are multiple ways to advance and you can open some pretty interesting dialogue options that have very interesting outcomes. -- thus decreasing the overall "linear" feel of the game.
8- a good main story line that really contributes to a feeling of growth in your character. the story lines are class specific so you get to really fill out a role and philosophy.
9- there's pvp. in areas and servers so you can take your pick.
10- it's a fairly open world with lots of exploration opportunities. all in all, i feel like this is a game that contributes a good bit to the mmo genre and is presents a truly enjoyable experience on the level of wow or coh/v. good job bioware.

Don't get me wrong, I have my share of complaints, mostly due to imbalance of characters, server lag, a few glitches, and other few things they have to fine toon. But most MMOs launch with their share of problems. I was expecting this. The life-span of this game will be determined by how they smooth these out. My least liked thing will probably not be fixed, that of so many loading screen between areas, such as the elevators on ships, where I'd like to not feel a disconnect when switching to my ship. But this is actually where I give it a 9. I expected the other stuff. It's hard to launch a MMO without them, as you can test all day, but there's no way to be sure how things will work when you have millions playing at once. To everybody else, the first thing you need to understand about the negative user reviews is that they are either from those who were in the beta, or those who are fanboys of other MMO's. The complaints about lag, glitches, ugly graphics, crappy textures and a bad UI are from idiots with terrible computers, and while they probably claim otherwise it simply cannot be true because SWTOR meets none of those complaints. This game is one of the best looking MMO's on the market, along with one of the smoothest and has had very little glitches compared to other MMO launches. The optimization could be better, however if you're going to play this game on low settings then don't bother with it as you'll probably end up bashing the visuals like every other retard. When maxed this game is one of the better looking MMO's, it feels high quality from the moment you create your character. There are 8 different classes, 16 in total if you count the specializations and 32 if you count the talent tree's, in other words this game has a lot of character customization options. Throw in a bunch of races and character creation options and you have yourself a very good amount of options to roll with. Whether you like charging into battle head first, or sitting in the back healing, or even using stealth to pick and choose your enemies, this game has something for everybody's play style. In other reviews you've probably heard about the story, and while I personally find it to be very good, I haven't experienced all the story options to really judge the game on that one element, however what I can tell you is that the combat is very fluid, the game has, for the most part great voice acting and there is literally 200+ hours of content per character play-through, this is an MMO though so there's always going to be something for you to do upon reaching level cap. Overall SWTOR is a very good game, and to the people saying "zones are instanced, each server is not one world" and all that BS, why don't you guys actually play the game first before spewing BS? Zones are packed, large with tons of players, the game feels far from dead. In short to the skeptics, don't let the negative user reviews throw you off, actually go buy this game because even if you dislike the monthly fee, in one month you'll spend more time playing this game than any other game outside of maybe Skyrim. I'm a gamer that plays all kinds of games regardless of their genre. I'd been playing WoW since 2004 till 2010 and moved to Rift for a couple month, and now to Swtor. This game has some traits that I really missed from good old classic WoW and some inherent good personalities of the Bioware.

Firstly, the huge world is actually there to explore. What I mean by this is that you don't just seat around in the Capital, waiting for dungeon que to pop up and just kill yourself out of boredom in the process. In Swtor, you have to look for groups the old way and there are actually people to communicate with. For me, the large world that you actually have to explore which puts you to work with other people is the foundation of any MMORPG. The game doesn't force you to choose one way by giving one choice too much advantage though. What I like about Swtor is that you can truly play either way: Solo playing the story is satisfying enough but Group play feels very natural and fun. Many instances are positioned in the world so naturally that you often don't realize they're actually dungeons meant for a group of people.

Secondly, the epic amount of immersive story telling. What I hated about Cataclysm is the destruction of good immersive story telling and lore in favor for convenient and easy play. In Swtor though, the game is built upon story telling, characters, and lore. Although admittedly the storytelling is not quite as good as other great Bioware single player titles, its quality and quantity are far above any other MMORPG. All 8 classes have different fully voice-overed stories as well so the replayability is amazing. It very much feels like playing buffed up version of DA:O with other people. Also the quests, while not too innovative tbh, actually put you to walk a lot. I know some people hate this but I really welcome this. If a game is too easy the experience is very forgettable, like in Cataclysm. Lastly, the classes aren't pigeon holed into set roles in favor for 'balance'. What I really like about classic RPG games is that the classes play very uniquely and each class has its clear specialty and weakness. There are things that you just can't do as effectively, but there are also things only you can do. This is why teaming up with other classes is so fun. WoW used to be like this, but since the arrival of DK who could do just everything including melee DPS, ranged DPS, AOE, Pet, Dot, Tank, DW, etc, every other class begun to be generalized as well and since Cata, there are effectively only 3 classes of tank, healer, and dps. You only get to choose what kind of 'theme' your character is, really. I think Swtor classes are very well made, built around their own unique strength rather than having just everything.

There are some things that I don't like, however. Firstly, the game needs a bit more polishing imo. The experience is not as epic as other great Bioware titles. I can understand though since the amount of content this game offers is so huge. It doesn't mean they aren't great either. It's just not as epic as I expected from the company that produced so many great titles. Still much better than DA2 imo. Also, while the music is quite good, none are that memorable. Yes. They all feel very Lucas Artistic but games like this need some more memorable music imo. Such music gets people attached to the game. For example, I still hear the SW choir sound whenever I think about WoW, and I hear the 'Vigil' music whenever I think about Mass Effect 1. I hear the DA:O title music when I think about the game. I haven't found such moment in Swtor yet(except for the opening text movie music maybe? lol), which is quite unfortunate. Lastly, Bioware took it too safe. I love both Blizzard style and Bioware style but I'm not sure If I like the Bioware style trying to be like Blizzard too much. All of the Bioware games had their unique, fun skill system, class system, combat, and so on. Why not go for them instead of copying WoW? I understand that WoW had copied many previous RPG systems as well but the core gameplay was in line with Blizzard's own previous titles. I wonder how epic Swtor would have been if Bioware pushed their own style just a little bit bit more.

Despite its drawbacks, Swtor is an epic MMORPG. I know the word 'epic' is so overused theseday but trust me, the game is epic in many ways. It's just that the game is too epic that some of the details feel a bit missing. Also the similarities with WoW can be both good and bad depending on the player. To me, though, although some of the EA feel spoils the game here and there, the game in general feels as if Blizzard and Bioware had a baby and his appearance(gameplay) resembles Blizzard and the personality(storytelling) feel similar to Bioware.

AureliusRex, I don't know the last time you checked a review site, but a 9 out of 10 is more than "great" but "superb" by most game reviewers. While I agree with your review of 9, maybe you should have chosen the just good or 7 score. I also don't think you should condemn those giving it a 10 as taking anything that's thrown at them as they're only choosing 1 score above yours. No game is perfect, but if they liked it so much they want to give it a 10 that's their business. I do agree that most people giving it a 0-5 either shouldn't be playing MMOs or were going to give it that score no matter what because of their love for WOW. I'm sure you mean well, there were just a few things that stood out in your review as a bit unfair. As for the game: character creation needs work, and the searching options in the auction house are a nightmare. Other than that, this game is better than WOW in almost every way. Let's not forget people, this game is only as far a step forward from WOW as WOW was from Everquest. I wouldn't talk about WOW like it's being ripped off as you will be accused of not knowing anything about the subject you're talking about. P.S. I haven't done PVP yet, but everyone I ask about it says it's much better than WOW in that it doesn't pander to the occasional player as much as WOW did. (sounds pretty much like the rest of TOR) Expand

Now what do we have here? In my oppinion, which is subjective of course, this is a good game with a few minor flaws. I would recommend it to any of my friends. Expand

A worthy successor to KOTOR I & II with the addition of true online functionality! The story options are immensely diverse and show the breadth of the Star Wars universe.

A beautifully cratfed online game. It doesn't feel like an MMO yet, but it does feel large, and the environments feel epic and wonderful. Really happy with the visuals and there's plenty of massive objects which make you feel very small, all in all an eye pleaser. The only MMO where I've stuck with questing, I'm loving this and I find combat to be fun and fast. Great Star Wars atmosphereA beautifully cratfed online game. Great Star Wars atmosphere and a very memorable experience, I've been playing for over a month now and still find this game great.

Lots of content and great quests, flashpoints which are dungeons but are very fun and I like the useful companions, I don;t often bother with crafting in MMO's, but I'm liking the crafting in this game.

A worthy MMO which deserves its top spot.

If you are trying to decide whether to buy the game from these reviews, I feel sorry for you. There is so much misinformation on this site with people 'reviewing' games they've never played. I played WoW for 5 years, Aion for 6 months. If you are a fan of the genre you will love SWTOR, plain and simple. From my experiences up to level 30 on two characters, I'm giving this game a solid 9. It'd be 9.5 if it were possible on metacritic.

a satisfying and refreshing experience, mixing WoW and such others game mechanics with BioWare unique storytelling and level design. with smart class balancing and interresting group zones, SWTOR can be played alone and grouped. It also has a bit of everything for everybody : gentle skill based PvP system where everybody can play whatever their level. Lots of fun and tons of content with 8 different storylines, will be spending alot of time on this one. I'm not a MMO troll but being a fan of the first games I had to give this a shot. So far I'm really enjoying it.

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.

I wound up bailing out on Star Wars: The Old Republic well before hitting the level cap, but not before digging into it more so than any other MMO I've played. Even if it is an unhappy marriage between two wildly different game types, the fact that it kept me hooked for so long at least counts for something.

A good game. It pays excellent homage to the film series (even though it's set before the movies), and is a really solid MMO.
