Really my biggest complaint is not having smart defaults for Joystick HOTAS and UI when using a joystick complaining about a key not being bound, let not telling you what the keyboard shortcut is (until you touch the mouse). Overall loving the game! Expand

I'm a fan of the old X-Wing/Tie Fighter games, and I've been waiting nearly 20 years for a worthy sequel. FINALLY, we have one. FINALLY, we have one. This game is not only in the genre I like (which is, itself, a big plus for players like me), it's an excellent game in its own right. The campaign is meaty, replayable (different ways to play many of the missions, many achievements/medals to get), challenging, emotive, and most importantly, a lot of fun. It took me about 10 hours to get through the campaign, without trying to get all the medals, or playing with all the different starfighters and loadouts that are available. I can easily see myself putting 20-30 hours into the campaign, alone, in the near future.

The multiplayer aspect is also very well done. The biggest annoyance from X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, that I can remember, is that you basically just had open space with ships flying in circles around each other, and extremely simple objectives. In Star Wars: Squadrons, they both enhanced the classic dogfight mode with breathtaking and exciting terrain features (fighting in an astroid field, in and around a starbase, in a debris-filled nebula, etc.), and added a fast-paced strategic mode wherein you have to win an actual capital ship battle. I really can't speak enough about the thrill that both of these modes provide.

All that being said, this game is not for everyone. If you don't understand the controls, haven't played space combat games, and aren't willing to learn, you're probably going to be frustrated (and leave an undeservedly bad review on Metacritic...). However, if you're willing to put in the effort to learn how to play, you'll love this game.

Surprisingly, EA didn't include anymicrotransactions, in this game. Every single thing you can get is unlocked just by playing the game. Please ignore the review bombs on this topic; I'm inclined to say that they're either bots or morons. THERE ARE ZERO MICROTRANSACTIONS. I find it a great relief that a game from this venerable genre remains untarnished from such modern and unpopular inventions.

Bottom line: if you like flight sims, Star Wars, or space combat games, and are willing to learn how to play, you'll love this game. 10/10.

This is literally my favorite game of all time. There are some bugs, and I wish EA had budgeted for more continued updates, but overall this game is a masterpiece. I have ~500 hours in Fleet Battles and it's a new, exciting game every time.

I see lots of comments from people who apparently think it's strange for there to be LGBT people in space, but I'm guessing they just read about it

And the gameplay is just stellar. 28 ago the game was in a very sorry state to be honest, the gameplay was still great and deserved all the praise the critics gave it, but a lot of players got a pretty bad experience.

Now most of that has been resolved and the game deserves high praise and a recommendation. The singleplayer is more like an 8/10 and the main reason why the game is half price instead of full. But the MP is pretty good as well and the game is a ton of fun and basically the genre reference for multiplayer dog fighting. Nothing gets close, the old classics like X-Wing vs TIE-Fighter, not Starlancer, not new games like Elite's Close Quarter Combat. This is the genre reference for team deathmatch dog fighting.
And as this is the games main focus it is imho a 10/10. The best game of it's kind.

It is not anywhere near as involved or unforgiving as something like Elite: Dangerous, but you'll really want a HOTAS setup to take advantage of everything it has to offer. Lots of power management and configuration, so having everything at the fingertips is a decided edge over people who are trying to dance across the keyboard to accomplish the same tasks.

Gameplay offers some great variety and exciting moments. (The boost drifting in particular is extremely enjoyable once you get the hang of how to pull it off.) AI can be fairly aggressive, which is nice, so SP and co-op missions are quite enjoyable. Graphics are nothing mind-blowing, but everything is crisp, clear, and very well designed. I took only a couple of missions to switch off the hud elements and fly on instruments only. Definitely immersive in all the right ways.

And best of all -- 0% of the game is microtransactions. You unlock everything by playing, and it comes at a pretty good pace. No ship equipment options feels OP as of yet, and it's 100% possible to do extremely well in MP matches using default builds. It's more like a Dark Souls approach -- lots to fiddle with, but there is no "best" anything. Everything is give and take.

Spectacular. This is definitely a labor of love created by people who care about gameplay and excitement more than the almighty dollar. Shame it had to take EA so many years to get back to the roots of what gaming is all about.

So far, I'd say the only complaint I have is that customizing your pilot's appearance is extremely limited. That's entirely cosmetic, but there aren't even options to change the face or hair options. Already had a match in which everyone on our team had picked exactly the same character model. And I was the only one that wasn't wearing the default flight suit. (I felt sooo out of place! :D )

I grew up on Wing Commander 3-4 in the mid 90's, and this game is taking me right back to my middle and high school years. The sound design is wonderful, the voice acting is awesome, the look and feel of the cockpits (especially inside the TIE fighter in VR with scratches on the cockpit glass) is absolutely amazing. I think i would rather go for 7+, but i'm seeing lots of ridicolous "1" reviews, so i'm gonna try to even this out. The game is fun - and that's it. On the other hand: story is a placeholder, and the game suffers from a couple of technical glitches - HOTAS have too much deadzone, VR experience is shaky (i wasn't able to pull this off with my oculus quest, i'm hoping that it's a cable issue, but Virtual Desktop didn't work either). Supposedly, the origin version works much better in that scope then SteamVR one.
I hope - after few patches i hope thing will be much better.
But there is a looots of BS in the opinions - EVERY time i was flying TIE and bumped into something, i died in explosion. Didn't have ANY problem with mouse control. People are complaining about microtransactions - WHAT?
"For example, in the first Imperial mission, you're simply told to scan the ships cargo's. They don't tell you which ship to scan" -THEY DO!!!! They place a marker the size of a small moon. The guy who wrote that, actually regrets that the ships have to be in front of you in order to shoot them. I'm serious, check JackH2551. He also insist that everyone moves faster then him. ARGH!
People moaning that tutorials are tutorials, that spacesim is a spacesim, the doing objectives is hard, that playing game is hard... jesus, i want to poke my eys out sometimes.
TLDR: It's fun! I hope they polish it further, improve performance, add new ships (B-wing! Tie defender!), new modes, new maps, but i like what i've got so far - definately will be playing this in coming weeks like crazy, it already got me hooked (but aiming with flightstick is hars hehe).

Also the complaint about the graphics looking “awful” is hilarious. Playing on an RTX 2080 and this game looks BETTER than the movies do. It’s one of the best looking games on PC, you’d have to be blind to think otherwise.

Campaign is pretty good with a lot of very cool and exciting moments, as well as memorable and fun characters. Unfortunately, the story, while very Star Wars-y, doesn't get to do much with the characters, and ends up mostly being about the clashing ideologies of Lindon Javes and Terisa Kerrill. The plot is mostly surface-level - Kerrill is mad at Javes for betraying the Empire, and Javes wants to redeem himself for his time as an Imperial commander by leading a new Rebel ship design project which Kerrill is determined to destroy. Both the Imperial and Rebel sides of the story get a happy ending for the squadrons, leaving an opening for Titan and Vanguard squadrons to appear in any sequels.

The gameplay is where Squadrons really shines, however. This game has the best starfighter mechanics since the 90s, hands down. It's roughly at the perfect level between sim and arcade flyer where it's still endlessly fun to fly, but it's also hard to perfect. Don't expect ships to fly like they do in Battlefront 2! And of course, the customisation is excellent. I kind of hope they keep adding new cosmetic items over time, but there's also enough here even if Motive never comes back to add to the game.

Now, the reason I'm giving the game a 10 instead of a 9? Well, that should be obvious. A whole bunch of angry trolls (most of whom probably just found out about this on Twitter rather than, you know, PLAYING THE GAME that they're mad it) learned that one of the characters (in my opinion, the best in the game!) is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. It's a very stupid thing to be angry about, and this game absolutely does not deserve a 4.7 rating just because some "snowflakes" got "triggered" by the awesome Bex Taylor-Klaus.

I happen to somewhat agree with some of the points that some of them have raised (emphasis on “somewhat”), and I also don’t like seeing a corporate agenda being shoehorned into a fictional world that I love. I am all for equal representation, and something is better than nothing, but it’s not exactly subtle, to put it mildly. It clearly has overrun the risk of alienating some not-insignificant (albeit childish) subset of the game’s core audience for what is ultimately nothing more than cynical corporate virtue signaling.

HOWEVER, I have the ability to ignore the fact that I know WHY certain aesthetic decisions were demanded by the suits behind the scenes (and technically speaking, they are nothing more than aesthetic decisions), and recognize that the GAMEPLAY, which is the entire reason I bought the game in the first place, is finely-tuned and beautifully executed.

Seriously, to get to what should be the only point of discussion here, this game is FUN. The gameplay is surprisingly deep and complex without being too overwhelming. Mastering the controls, power management, ship upgrades, and combat strategy is extremely rewarding, and the whole experience is so damn immersive that I know I’ll be coming back to this game for years to come. It’s not necessary for your enjoyment, but if you can, do yourself a favor and play it in VR with a HOTAS setup.

SOLID 8.5/10 that I’m giving a 10 to offset the review bomb. Highly recommended for any Star Wars or flight sim fans that are looking for a bit of a challenge.

There's only one really dark skinned pilot of each gender too, but when you're used to having 8 options for white characters and then 1 black guy, apparently it's offensive to not get preferential treatment anymore.

The current shortage of joysticks and throttles is a problem if you do not already have one, I don’t recommend playing with mouse and keyboard. Controller works week ends and is a lot easier to get your hands on right now if you don’t have one.

To the game itself: I played the old rogue squadrons and so on. Really reminded of those, just better. Gameplay is absolutely fantastic and I'm looking forward to experiencing it in VR. Campaign is also very good, maybe not a very deep story, but good enough and definitely enough variety in missions. Getting all medals on the highest difficulty will be a challenge. Multiplayer I didn't play much. If you enjoy the core gameplay I see absolutely no problem. I hear people complaining about there not being enough variety, but the way I see it: What variety is there in racing, shooters, mobas, battle royales or whatever else might be popular? The core gameplay is fun as hell. For 40 $ I think this is a steal. Also props for no micro transactions or pay to win elements.

Great game, I hope they expand on it!

I have 16 hours in the game so far and the end still isn't in sight. For $40 you are definitely getting your money's worth. I feel like nothing is going to compare to this experience for a while.

Me and my friend haven't really had any technical issues other than it slowing down really bad in one multiplayer match so I can't really comment on the issues other people are having. I will say that the game seems to be well optimized since my friend has a Ryzen 3 1300 processor with a gtx 1060 3GB and he says it runs pretty smoothly for him in VR.

If someone is rating the game negatively because of "identity politics" or whatever then they are truly just looking for a reason to be offended by something. Throughout the whole game I was trying to figure out what people were talking about and other than one guy mentioning his husband one time in one sentence in the entire game, I couldn't find anything. It's been a long time since I've played a flight sim this fun. There is enough complexity to keep things interesting for quite some time. I'm in it for the multiplayer, and so far it has been pretty satisfying and will likely be even more so as players learn the game and competition increases. I highly recommend SWS! I'm not running into a whole lot of bugs. Of course, there are going to be a few at launch, but this seems like one of the better game launches I've seen in terms of overall balance and playability. Time will probably reveal the need for a few rebalances and some bug fixes, but I am impressed given that EA is the publisher of SWS. Ignore the rating, buy a copy, and enjoy! Expand

Squadrons is a fantastic game despite some of its flaws. The gameplay is rock solid. So much that, even with only two online game modes, I feel compelled to fire it up night after night and go drifting about in some of the most beautifully rendered star fighters to have graced a computer screen.

The game has a high skill floor to be considered accessible, however. It's tough to get your footing under you when you first start the online modes. The people who have been playing for months on end know the controls inside and out, and will fly sideways around you while you're just figuring out where the throttle is. But keep at it, and in no time, you'll be pulling the same stunts yourself. It's gratifying to find yourself learning the mechanics.

The story itself is above par. I enjoyed it for what it was. People say it's a tutorial for online play, but it really isn't. The narrative can feel a bit boggy at times. But I keep seeing critiques about how it doesn't compare to the old games. However, I say this: the old games didn't have amazing stories either. Squadrons does a superb job of getting you moving, doing things other than fly and shoot all the time, and delivering it all in a well wrapped package.

VR is also amazing in this game. When I first booted up my HMD, I was blown away with how real the cockpits felt. The models look great in pancake mode, but you really feel like you're in a spaceship flying at hundreds of kilometers an hour when you plop into VR.

What truly impresses me is how well the game plays regardless of your controller type. It works great as a keyboard and mouse game, HOTAS, HOKAS, HOSAS, and console controller without being too skewed to favor one over another. Crossplay also puts this to the test as console players are just as effective as PC players since console controllers are a very viable option.

The music is amazing as well. The composer not only did great arrangements of classic pieces but also brought his own life into Squadrons only thematic melodies that weave seamlessly with the John Williams compositions.

The game has a tight knit online community. I've never met so many people who can be competitive, but at the same time approachable. It really feels amazing to be a part of it.

In summary, it's a fantastic game that I think people should try. If you love Star Wars and flight sims, definitely check it out.

The criticism you may see of some left-wing agenda, on the other hand, is silliness. Just enjoy the game, yo. None of that affects the story, it's just various characters with different lives just like in the real world. I don't care how you feel about politics, there is no reason that would affect any enjoyment of the game one way or the other. Either suit up and sit in the cockpit or sit in your sandbox and whine about how some male character mentions IN PASSING a husband rather than a wife. Like, who gives a fsck? Just enjoy disagreeing with him in game like you apparently would in real life. It doesn't affect the story; it's just people in the galaxy fighting rebel scum together.

I tested playing on the mouse + keyboard and HOTAS (first time experience). For the mouse I just must give sensibility a little boost to get better maneuverability with my starfighter but the keybindings is a bit uncomfortable, although HOTAS is feeling great and is very fun to play with.

In the end honestly, it is EA game with multiplayer that have no microtransactions at the time, this is great plus.

I am ONLY giving this a 9 out of 10, due to the day 1 issues with dead zone problems with HOTAS controls (flight stick and throttle) and minor VR issues (there are workarounds for both posted on Reddit). All of this will get patched before long, no doubt.
But once I had everything up and running.. mannn, this is exactly what 8 year old me could have dreamed to play one day in the future.

But once I had everything up and running.. mannn, this is exactly what 8 year old me could have dreamed to play one day in the future. Being in a fast paced battle, all the original sounds, looking around the cockpits of every imperial and rebel fighter, whipping my head around to track enemy ships, looking back to see my R2 unit and every other aspect of the game VR is as close to being in a Star Wars movie battle sequence than anything I could have imagined!
I would wait in line for Squadrons in VR (with HOTAS controls) over Smuggler's Run at Disneyland.. if it were open.

I have to imagine the negative reviewers are either rating bombing the game, due to reasons having nothing to do with the game itself, or they just may not be fans of Star Wars, in general. I couldn't imagine any true fan of the movies not being at least somewhat impressed at what they've put together here.. for $40, no less!

There is no 40-hour campaign, there is a campaign though and a pleasant one to go through, without becoming too much of a tutorial. There are aspects that will bring back a lot of memories from the 90s titles such as X-Wing, TIE Fighter, BoP, XW:Alliance that become apparent, but not prevalent during your playthrough.
There is a multiplayer aspect and this is to provide longevity through 2 game modes and a handful of maps. People will want more, because they always do, but as an initial experience I find nothing lacking. You get to experience a Star Wars space sim without the archaic internet connection of the 90s and you get a chance to be part of a growing crowd of people that can help shape the game into an even better experience.
There are no microtransactions up to this point.
There is an issue with controls having little in the way of calibration (the deadzone issue might drive people insane) but the game has been out for 2 days, so there's confidence in the dev team's ability to resolve these in due time.
If your reasons for not liking this game revolve around minorities, sexual orientation and SJW issues, you weren't looking for a Star Wars space sim. This isn't the game you're looking for, move along.

It's honestly really disappointing to see the game getting review bombed the way it is. Let me just preface and say the game is not for everyone. If a gameplay loop of fighting different players doesn't appeal to you and you need more maps or game modes then I'd be a little hesitant. There are only a handful of maps and two gameplay modes. Keep that in mind. That being said my counterpoint is most PvP games only have one or two viable modes you can jump in that are actually populated anyways. More maps would be nice.

A big complaint I'm seeing is poor performance and clunky UI/controls. I've had zero performance issues after roughly 20 hours in game. I'm playing on a higher end mid range PC with HOTAS. Don't expect to boot the game up and have your HOTAS setup in a way that makes sense. Every HOTAS is different and there is no conceivable way Motive would've been able to keymap it properly for each one that works for each player. That being said all of your controls are fully customizable. If you're having dead zone issues with your HOTAS maybe take a few minutes and set it up, there are deadzone options in game and you'll need to set it up with your HOTAS's driver as well. As you should with any flight sim type game you're playing.

I truly don't understand the complaint around identity politics. People are getting upset about a gay pilot because he mentions his husband once in an optional side conversation that for 100% of the game prior has been character backstory an exposition? Or is it the amount of females and POC in the campaign? Or is it the Mirilian, Trandoshan or Mimbanese that offends you? I'll grant there is a lack of white men in the campaign but honestly I'd take that offense as maybe an eye opener to what offends you and why. The campaign shoves absolutely no political or social issues at you, it is a Star Wars game and Star Wars campaign. There's no Trump jokes, no BLM shout outs and no gun law puns.

All of the prior being said the biggest shortcoming is lack of content in terms of multiplayer replayability. It wouldn't be so bad if there were more maps. That really highlights it in a way that's hard to ignore.

The campaign is solid, I really enjoyed it. Decent story and easy to follow. Played it through on the hardest difficulty and it was quite difficult. The complaints I've seen on it are the kind of stuff you could expect from any flight sim. You crash you die, don't crash. You go where you're not supposed to you die. It's not the kind of game where they can wall you in to prevent you going somewhere, you're in space. If you fly out of bounds the AI will kill you or you get the "turn around" notification. The AI was difficult but it encourages you to actually fly like you're avoiding getting hit. Flying in a straight line you're going to die. Change direction and they'll miss.

Overall from a PC/HOTAS player 9/10. More maps please.

What keeps me from rating this a 10? It's admittedly difficult to access for people who are using this as their entry into HOTAS gaming. Controller is likely a safer setup for most people. As friends of mine have pointed out, this is common on HOTAS setups given the lack of a "standard" layout. Mouse and keyboard are possible, I guess? Their approach to this type of control scheme is interesting, but will not be as reactive or responsive as controllers or HOTAS with the exception of using keyboard to get around the more advanced commands. Keyboard might be more possible if you're playing support, primarily.

The gameplay, however, is rock-solid enough to put it as one of the best games I've played in recent memory. This let me access my inner 10 year old kid, again. I ordered a VR headset to take it even further. It's an experience not to be missed.

Campaign is short and story not so much exciting (completed the whole campaign in VR). But, you know - having a chance to fly in Star Wars in VR + destroy Star Destroyer - that's just wow! For all who remembers legendary Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance and wanted to fly in this universe with modern graphics - highly recommended!

The campaign is a solid, fun experience, and the multiplayer will definitely bring you hours of fun, especially with friends, but with only 2 game modes that play out similarly every time, you can't help but wish for more varied objectives and game types. Battlefront II, for example, had a lot of varied objectives for its space combat mode, and I would love to see some of that brought over to a game with deeper mechanics, like this one. All in all, I would very much support a sequel or follow up to this. Expand

If I had to pick out a flaw, it's that I wish there was MORE game.  More characters, more ships, more maps, more cosmetics, all of it.  The planned support ended far too soon, the marketing team didn't hype it enough, and a game that is by all rights one of the best of the type to come out in years is instead relegated to the bargain bin, far too soon. It has been a very long time since there has been a Star Wars space sim which came anywhere close to the immersion and the care and attention to detail of those games until now. This is no mere arcade shooter or an over complex flight simulator, it is a careful balance of the two, optimised for realistic but hectic and mind blowing dogfights. The skill ceiling is huge but it is fun from day 1 especially in VR where this is the first time I genuinely felt like I was behind the flight stick of an X Wing or my personal favourite the A Wing. You blast past the tie fighter you were chasing as you realise an interceptor has locked on to you behind and as you look behind you to keep him in your sights as you manoeuvre your ship into a tight loop bringing them into your sights as you lower your gaze to line up the target reticule….squeezing the trigger and blowing past the wreckage as explosions trigger all around you. Even more amazing is watching your B- Wing cockpit rotate around you as your cockpit remains stable, a beautiful moment to really feel what being in this ship is meant to feel like. This game is worth every penny and more. The developers revived the golden age of Star Wars games and did the impossible, improved on a beloved classic. My only gripe which prevents me from giving this a 10/10 is that there is so much more potential in the single player and co-op modes. The single player feels a bit too on rails and thinking back to the excellent array of mission types available in the older games it would seem a simple task to replicate in this fantastic new game engine, protect, escort, disable, capture missions all in a 5 squad co-op. Also for a game called squadrons it would have been great to have a clan system of some kind and allow permanent squadron names and assigned designations (Red 5 standing by). All of this could easily be capitalised on with a sequel. If there is no sequel it will be a travesty and a waste of a well crafted game engine. Expand

To put it simply, Star Wars: Squadrons is a low-budget X-Wing vs TIE Fighter II based off of Battlefront II’s space battles. I admit that I expected more, but after two decades we finally got a new Star Wars sim (leaning towards the arcade side, but still) and I did enjoy it. It looks and sounds like a Star Wars game should, and Motive’s successful effort to balance such dissimilar crafts as the X-Wing and the TIE Fighter is commendable. [12/2020, p.64]

There’s a good concept at the core of Star Wars: Squadrons, as flying a space fighter and managing its systems can be a lot of fun, however, you have to be a very dedicated Star Wars fan to enjoy a drab campaign with just a handful of memorable moments and watered-down multiplayer modes from Battlefront 2.
