they say a lot about like "the controls and the gameplay are horribles" but if a star wars starship exists, the controls would be like that, a ship is hard to control and you need to know that. sorry for the english mistakes i am from brazil.

I played all the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games, including Alliance.
And what can I say... This game is utter trash.

The controls are horrible. The gameplay is bland and repetitive. The graphics dont look good for a 2020 game. The sound sucks as well, the music isnt nearly as epic as in the old games.
The characters are all overdone and artificial. Like an AI wrote them and their dialogue.
"Diversity" was obvious the main goal, while everything else was ignored.

The star field looks pathetic and for some reason the whole game is as bright as day every single time. Dark space? Nope! Children could be afraid in the dark I guess...
    Adjusting brightness doesnt help much.
All in all it looks like someone made this game who has never played the classics. Nothing is canon.
TIE fighters are flying tanks and have missiles, X-Wings have missiles and other fantasy weapons, theres scores of BS upgrades that make this game look like a generic mobile game, Star Destroyers look tiny, ridiculous and simply stupid added mechanics, (like slowing down to turn faster - and make yourself a better target - or slowing down and turning erratically to get rid of missiles), the story is laughable and inauthentic in the first few minutes, face palming is your permanent body stance.

The only good thing about this game is that they actually made use of joysticks possible, but I fear thats mostly thanks to Windows itself.

They could have made so many things so much better. But instead they just made everything worse.
I thought at least the gameplay would be challenging, and more realistic due to the capabilities of todays PCs, but instead we got the same stupid wave after wave of TIEs as 30 years ago.
Only this time they made them harder to kill and more accurate than in the movies.
20-40 TIE fighters to one X-Wing, which need 1 to 3 shots to kill, like in the movies?
Nope! Lets lets just do everything worse and dont think about what we could do better.
Oh yeah, and the AI is more stupid than 30 years ago. Thats also quite the achievement.
Pathetic and laughable for the year 2020. The game just feels extremely cheap and unfinished for an "AAA" publisher.
Give this franchise to someone who loves Star Wars and has talent!
Thank god I never paid for it. I wish I could still refund it on EGS (free title), to not give EA and money from this.

I don't know why they did that. You remove those lame characters and put regular Star Wars vilain, you give the ability to control the ship when leaving/reentering the hangar and it's an easy 8/10. Also they messed up the hyperspace effect, how can you mess that up ?

I would recommend that game for a star wars fan and people that don't care about woke propaganda. You can have a lot of fun.

I was experiencing an old school feel like maybe something where you could play through a rebel campaign of 15 missions and then 15 missions of imperial, kind of like with the original Command and Conquer. Playing both sides simultaneously was interesting but ultimately felt a bit unfocused. Interesting though. I think these guys should remake X-Wing and Tie Fighter together in one game where you can choose sides and then play through those campaigns. Those games are crying out for remasters. Expand

It has been a very long time since there has been a Star Wars space sim which came anywhere close to the immersion and the care and attention to detail of those games until now. This is no mere arcade shooter or an over complex flight simulator, it is a careful balance of the two, optimised for realistic but hectic and mind blowing dogfights. The skill ceiling is huge but it is fun from day 1 especially in VR where this is the first time I genuinely felt like I was behind the flight stick of an X Wing or my personal favourite the A Wing. You blast past the tie fighter you were chasing as you realise an interceptor has locked on to you behind and as you look behind you to keep him in your sights as you manoeuvre your ship into a tight loop bringing them into your sights as you lower your gaze to line up the target reticule….squeezing the trigger and blowing past the wreckage as explosions trigger all around you. Even more amazing is watching your B- Wing cockpit rotate around you as your cockpit remains stable, a beautiful moment to really feel what being in this ship is meant to feel like. This game is worth every penny and more. The developers revived the golden age of Star Wars games and did the impossible, improved on a beloved classic. My only gripe which prevents me from giving this a 10/10 is that there is so much more potential in the single player and co-op modes. The single player feels a bit too on rails and thinking back to the excellent array of mission types available in the older games it would seem a simple task to replicate in this fantastic new game engine, protect, escort, disable, capture missions all in a 5 squad co-op. Also for a game called squadrons it would have been great to have a clan system of some kind and allow permanent squadron names and assigned designations (Red 5 standing by). All of this could easily be capitalised on with a sequel. If there is no sequel it will be a travesty and a waste of a well crafted game engine. Expand

If I had to pick out a flaw, it's that I wish there was MORE game.  More characters, more ships, more maps, more cosmetics, all of it.  The planned support ended far too soon, the marketing team didn't hype it enough, and a game that is by all rights one of the best of the type to come out in years is instead relegated to the bargain bin, far too soon. These games have influenced my life considerably, and when Squadrons was announced last year I set about looking up all the old friends and groups from those games back in the day, and I've been having a blast ever since, and making many new friends along the way.

We started playing XvT/XWA again in preparation for Squadrons coming out, and it's rekindled so many joyful memories and experiences from those games I played in my childhood. Amazingly I'm part of groups that still play XvT and XWA, as well as Squadrons, and it's honestly been my best gaming experience since XvT. I honestly hope it was popular enough to make Squadrons 2 or other true star wars space sims a reality in the future.

Squadrons is a fantastic game despite some of its flaws. The gameplay is rock solid. So much that, even with only two online game modes, I feel compelled to fire it up night after night and go drifting about in some of the most beautifully rendered star fighters to have graced a computer screen.

The game has a high skill floor to be considered accessible, however. It's tough to get your footing under you when you first start the online modes. The people who have been playing for months on end know the controls inside and out, and will fly sideways around you while you're just figuring out where the throttle is. But keep at it, and in no time, you'll be pulling the same stunts yourself. It's gratifying to find yourself learning the mechanics.

The story itself is above par. I enjoyed it for what it was. People say it's a tutorial for online play, but it really isn't. The narrative can feel a bit boggy at times. But I keep seeing critiques about how it doesn't compare to the old games. However, I say this: the old games didn't have amazing stories either. Squadrons does a superb job of getting you moving, doing things other than fly and shoot all the time, and delivering it all in a well wrapped package.

VR is also amazing in this game. When I first booted up my HMD, I was blown away with how real the cockpits felt. The models look great in pancake mode, but you really feel like you're in a spaceship flying at hundreds of kilometers an hour when you plop into VR.

What truly impresses me is how well the game plays regardless of your controller type. It works great as a keyboard and mouse game, HOTAS, HOKAS, HOSAS, and console controller without being too skewed to favor one over another. Crossplay also puts this to the test as console players are just as effective as PC players since console controllers are a very viable option.

The music is amazing as well. The composer not only did great arrangements of classic pieces but also brought his own life into Squadrons only thematic melodies that weave seamlessly with the John Williams compositions.

The game has a tight knit online community. I've never met so many people who can be competitive, but at the same time approachable. It really feels amazing to be a part of it.

In summary, it's a fantastic game that I think people should try. If you love Star Wars and flight sims, definitely check it out.

Battlefront II, for example, had a lot of varied objectives for its space combat mode, and I would love to see some of that brought over to a game with deeper mechanics, like this one. All in all, I would very much support a sequel or follow up to this. Expand

While there are legitimate criticisms with this game don't listen to the "anti-sjw" crowd because they just don't like it because the cast is diverse. Which while there are stuff you can criticize this game on, that reason of it being too sjw is just stupid. Don't listen to those reviews.

I really like this game and I hope we get a sequel that maybe has the clone wars or just more ships and maps. Plus even though it wasn't really the main goal of the game I really liked the new republic squadmates in particular.

Game is still broken on PS4/PS5 after 8 months after the realease. Now as part of valued Playstation Plus offer, you have the opportunity to play this bugged game for free. Good luck passing Mission 1: Form the Vanguard loading screen after the end of the mission. You likely get stuck and force close the game.

Controls were clearly designed for a console and the ships functionality only slightly exceeds the general ideas of those from Terminal Velocity. In comparison to Freespace the game has actually far less to offer. It is significantly shorter (about 8 hours), targeting systems are a joke, ship controls are basic and it is still a high praise. Mouse controls are terrible and a pad is a must. Alternatively you can remap the keyboard for a more dynamic experience. What is absolutely barbaric is that the game physics do not use any form of inertia in space. While at the subject of space, why are all the battles taking place in space alone? Why are there no on - world atmospheric missions? NPC's could be completely skipped as a wooden block would have more to offer. The only thing this game actually does have to offer are really amazing graphics, too bad that there are so many graphical artifacts (v - sync doesn't always work right, you can get stuck on a piece of a space debris). What is an utmost atrocity is that the story regardless of the side chosen is linear and failed missions simply restarts having no impact on the final outcome. To summarize:
    - game is extremely short
    - linear story line, missions have no impact on the story or upcoming missions
    - gorgeous unfortunately under-optimized graphics
    - terrible controls and ship functionality
    - unrealistic space - physics
    - music is yet another SW copy/paste
    - meaningless NPC's

Fun to play tough... once. Recommendation? Wait until it's on sale for -75% discount, then it may actually be worth your attention.

PS: The voice acting is awful, the characters are cringe, and the story might as well be from the mind of a young teen.

He launched the game and is already abandoned. Disconnection problems during the match. Offline mode only has 1, dogfight is missing. Interesting campaign but they are very bad maps. Poor performance on the VR Rift CV1. Game consumes 100% of the processor and has crashes (i7 9750h). I'm glad that EA Games lost the franchise's exclusivity. It was killing Star Wars Games.

I have not played all of the game yet, I have done all the tutorials a part of the story, and 3 rounds of multiplayer. First of all, I love the fleet battles, and the story mode is great. The only thing that drags it down a little is specifically on the pc, (as far as I know) the controls are a little hard, you have to press "6" for a resupply, which is really far from where your hand usually is.

While a great idea in theory, its execution of a Star Wars space fighter game is terrible.
There is no grand campaign or custom sandbox or couch co-op. It's a very short linear game.
The characters are unlikable and certain choices were made with them clearly at the last minute which hurts their development as it feels so unnatural and forced.

Next time let us make our own character.

The games is a classic arcade space shooter with a somewhat lame and simple story, with very cool SW environments. It feels like someone was trying to add some space sim features but failing at it. Also, the HOTAS support is bad and broken. Instead of spending time to add milions of keybindings that do absoloutetly NOTHING, they should have spent the time to add a better hotas support.

The missions become repetitive, the combat environments are very nice but the game fails to use them in a meanigfull way, they are there just as background. The game is arcady, but the ship don't feel good to move around. Plus there is NO variety of combat .. just pew pew of red lasers and a random missile.

Now most of that has been resolved and the game deserves high praise and a recommendation. The singleplayer is more like an 8/10 and the main reason why the game is half price instead of full. But the MP is pretty good as well and the game is a ton of fun and basically the genre reference for multiplayer dog fighting. Nothing gets close, the old classics like X-Wing vs TIE-Fighter, not Starlancer, not new games like Elite's Close Quarter Combat. This is the genre reference for team deathmatch dog fighting.
And as this is the games main focus it is imho a 10/10. The best game of it's kind.

But even still there are a few bugs and a pretty big one in ranked multiplayer that makes it impossible to take multiplayer serious right now.

I have started to recommend the game to friends, but with the warning that there are still some bugs in the game, but it is a blast to fly around in VR.

(Everything below is from release night)
The game has shipped in a very bad state. The "VR Support" and "HOTAS Support" just isn't there for PC. There are multiple problems with HOTAS deadzones. And for VR you HAVE to have your keyboard and mouse to play so anyone with a sim setup is going to be sitting with a keyboard in their lap while playing...

And if you get it on Steam and this is your first EA game on Steam you have to link your EA account with your Steam account. If you already have another EA game (say Fallen Order) this wasn't that big of a deal, but for this game the account link screen is buggy, and you have to do it from in game. It took me about an hour to figure out how to get past EAs login just to link my account.

This is the first non-Nintendo game that I have pre-ordered in years. I completely regret buying it and thankfully I should be able to get a refund for it. Going back to Elite Dangerous for my space sim needs.

What keeps me from rating this a 10? It's admittedly difficult to access for people who are using this as their entry into HOTAS gaming. Controller is likely a safer setup for most people. As friends of mine have pointed out, this is common on HOTAS setups given the lack of a "standard" layout. Mouse and keyboard are possible, I guess? Their approach to this type of control scheme is interesting, but will not be as reactive or responsive as controllers or HOTAS with the exception of using keyboard to get around the more advanced commands. Keyboard might be more possible if you're playing support, primarily.

The gameplay, however, is rock-solid enough to put it as one of the best games I've played in recent memory. This let me access my inner 10 year old kid, again. I ordered a VR headset to take it even further. It's an experience not to be missed.

This game is what I wished for after I've played the Rogue One PSVR mission. No more no less. As a Star Wars Fan I'm happy with the result, but can imagine that people, who aren't fans of the franchise or who have a lot more experience with flight sims, that this game is not for them.

I read a lot of reviews and forum posts about troubles, so mind you. Some of them seem to be real problems like the "Deadzone on Joysticks" (fixed) and low performance. But I also see a lot of VR-people knowing absolutely nothing about setting up VR before and while in a new game.

So take the comments with a grain of salt about the game, since EA bashing is still cool (yeah they deserved it), but Motive did some good passionate work.

1 - I did not know that the ranked system wasn't working (I thought I was bad, but it is actually entirely broken) more info on #5
2 - I did not own a 144hz monitor until after the game came out, and... well **** it's locked at 60hz (why) Now I'm even more inspired to play anything besides this... where I can use my new monitor.
3 - I since then, finished the campaign, and wow... I don't have a problem with the SJW stuff, but the level of writing here is middle school level at best. Bad guy bad, good guys good. Why? Cause. Oh.. also, empire is the bad guys, if you didn't know. They'll shove that down your throat just like every other mediocre star wars game has, don't worry !
4 - Dogfight is literally just skirmish mode. Same maps. No objectives, just first to 30 kills.
5 - Fleet battles is fun. If it wasn't a ****ing pre-alpha version. For one, the ranking system doesn't work at all, and you can only play ranked if you want to PvP (LMFAO WHAT?) Seriously. It doesn't work. Go ahead and try it if you don't believe me. It is broken, nobody has gotten out of the first division. And even when it's fixed, it's going to be a GRIND. So great, I'll just play dogfight over and over again until I get bored (which is after about half a match)

6 - NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE MENTION THIS: There is no difference between any of the gamemodes. It's dog fighting. Fleet battles you might play support, or go for a bombing, but 3-4 people on your team are going to be fighters most of the time. THIS GAMEPLAY IS CARRIED OVER TO EVERY PART OF THE GAME. INCLUDING THE STORY. SIX MAPS. COPY PASTED FROM THE CAMPAIGN. You know what you do in the campaign? Some cool trench runs? Maybe some cinematic sequences, escaping 2 colliding ships or something AWESOME? TOO ****IN BAD. THE STORY IS THE SAME THING AS MULTIPLAYER, you do the same stuff on the SAME MAPS :D Shoot the fighters! OKAY! Now, shoot the objective! ----OR: Defend the frigate (by shooting the fighters) and then defend the objective (by shooting the fighters, that are shooting the objective....) And the only thing that ever changes is that you will be forced to support and shield objectives and teammates for 5 minutes straight, every few missions. Jesus. EVERY MODE IS COPY PASTED. THE MAPS ARE IDENTICAL, AND THERE'S ONLY ****ING SIX? I thought there was 7 but it turns out, that's just a random map option...... lol. It put on a good show at first but after playing for a bit you can really see how ****ing lazy this launch was. It was BARE minimum on every mode. Every mode has 80-90% of the same gameplay and you end up repeating it over and over again.... which would be FINE for the competitive format in PvP. But we already talked about that ****

7 - Conclusion : This hurts. This actually hurts. It could've been so good. But a week has gone by and we've gotten 1 patch on day 6. And here's the kicker, it didn't fix ****ing anything. Not a god damn thing. They gave us patch notes (that were pathetically short), but the funny thing is, NOTHING that got "fixed" in the patch ACTUALLY GOT FIXED.

    WHAT ARE THEY DOING?

So effectively, I gave this game a 9, then a 6 on day three. Now, players have left the game in masses. It takes me 4 minutes to find a game, and somebody will still leave mid match. On launch day, I would be in queue for less than a second (instantly queue with 3 platforms). Now that everybody realizes it's not going to get better for a while, they've stopped playing.

I'm bumping my score waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down (especially after they have taken so long to patch and treat their customers right). This is an easy 3/10. Do NOT buy.

I don't know why the game has such a low average score. It's true that the character art isn't the most attractive, and seems to have been intentionally pushing a woke/anti-racist agenda, but there are some white characters available. It's been a long time since I've played a flight sim this fun. There is enough complexity to keep things interesting for quite some time. I'm in it for the multiplayer, and so far it has been pretty satisfying and will likely be even more so as players learn the game and competition increases. I highly recommend SWS! I'm not running into a whole lot of bugs. Of course, there are going to be a few at launch, but this seems like one of the better game launches I've seen in terms of overall balance and playability. Time will probably reveal the need for a few rebalances and some bug fixes, but I am impressed given that EA is the publisher of SWS. Ignore the rating, buy a copy, and enjoy! Expand

I tought the dream came true in 1994 with X wing.. Then came Tie Fighter... Both were incredible games. A great plot, major story with voice acting and solid combat...

And years have passed... After X-Wing alliance, unfortunately there was no decent star wars -space simulation, hell... no space simulation whatsoever.

When I first heard about this, I was sceptical about the track record of EA and their latest star wars games... But for old times sake (And ofcourse VR) I pre-ordered the game...

First night was hard... The speed of the game and the dizzyness it created while trying to manuever was overwhelming.

The atmosphere was so mesmerizing... The closed spaces of a Tie fighter blocks VR's freedom.

But when I was in an A wing, the scenery was breathtaking. Great designed maps with lots of opprotunities to master, and hiding spots to exploit... The great flight mechanics, unbelieavable combat and feeling of success (when you learn how to manuever)...

With 4 of my friends we are in a Galaxy Far Far away, hunting the enemy...

And I have never felt that my dream finally came true like this before.

    Cons:
    - Only 6 maps and 2 game modes
    - Ship customization options are a bit low.
    - Pilot customizations have no effect except a 2 minute briefing and an endgame pose...

I have 16 hours in the game so far and the end still isn't in sight. For $40 you are definitely getting your money's worth. I feel like nothing is going to compare to this experience for a while.

Me and my friend haven't really had any technical issues other than it slowing down really bad in one multiplayer match so I can't really comment on the issues other people are having. I will say that the game seems to be well optimized since my friend has a Ryzen 3 1300 processor with a gtx 1060 3GB and he says it runs pretty smoothly for him in VR.

If someone is rating the game negatively because of "identity politics" or whatever then they are truly just looking for a reason to be offended by something. Throughout the whole game I was trying to figure out what people were talking about and other than one guy mentioning his husband one time in one sentence in the entire game, I couldn't find anything. So I guess if you are easily offended and super homophobic then stay away from this game???

You either don't not see where the cursor is, or get bugged down with the "restrain mouse control" feature... They added a "mouse sensitivity which change NOTHING" in game, but to prevent you to use the wheel commands. I don't have a decent joystick, but my old one didn't give much benefit in my aiming either.

UI: I don't know who designed that UI, but the constant loading screen to change section in the UI is obnoxious. Plus half the time in multiplayer escape doesn't do what it's supposed to do. It feels like none tested it, or didn't bother fixing it.

Multiplayer: Most of the time multiplayer is ok, until you get this weird bug when you ask to join but doesn't join a game, and it just cancel the matchmaking. Or you join a game with no count down at the start with 1 player missing on a 10/10 lobby. The game Think you have 10 player, but you don't and there's no count down.

The game needed to be delayed to polish the edges. I'm glad i didn't had to pay 40$ for that game because it's not worth that for now. It's another release it now, fix it later tittle. A shame because the concept is GOOD, the delivery, not so much.

Overall I am confused by this game and don't like it: between the very in-your-face politics in the story (which I abandoned) and pointless character customization, the questionable graphics and technical choices (how is it possible for a game to stutter that much), it's just a fraction of a SW BF2 with minor additions for whoever does not have VR & other bits.

Oh yeah, I forgot the grind: as if I wanted to play a game like I go to work and do chores. That brings this game to a flat 0.

Edit: after "playing" 6 hours, facing countless crashes without explanation, disconnection, ejections, etc (this is the only game doing that on my rigs), this product is even more of a joke.

It's good for some players who massively just happened to signed onto metacritic to express their love for it, not for me.

In the single player, there is reasonable criticism of some lame voice acting and structure there. Other characters basically monologue at you to give exposition, but there isn't real development between you and them.

The criticism you may see of some left-wing agenda, on the other hand, is silliness. Just enjoy the game, yo. None of that affects the story, it's just various characters with different lives just like in the real world. I don't care how you feel about politics, there is no reason that would affect any enjoyment of the game one way or the other. Either suit up and sit in the cockpit or sit in your sandbox and whine about how some male character mentions IN PASSING a husband rather than a wife. Like, who gives a fsck? Just enjoy disagreeing with him in game like you apparently would in real life. It doesn't affect the story; it's just people in the galaxy fighting rebel scum together.

Also the complaint about the graphics looking “awful” is hilarious. Playing on an RTX 2080 and this game looks BETTER than the movies do. It’s one of the best looking games on PC, you’d have to be blind to think otherwise.

That being said, there ARE some legit criticisms, some bugs that need to be patched out, a couple of small QoL changes they could make, and yes star destroyers do seem a little small, but the foundation of this game is golden (especially at its price point).

To put it simply, Star Wars: Squadrons is a low-budget X-Wing vs TIE Fighter II based off of Battlefront II’s space battles. I admit that I expected more, but after two decades we finally got a new Star Wars sim (leaning towards the arcade side, but still) and I did enjoy it. It looks and sounds like a Star Wars game should, and Motive’s successful effort to balance such dissimilar crafts as the X-Wing and the TIE Fighter is commendable. [12/2020, p.64]

There’s a good concept at the core of Star Wars: Squadrons, as flying a space fighter and managing its systems can be a lot of fun, however, you have to be a very dedicated Star Wars fan to enjoy a drab campaign with just a handful of memorable moments and watered-down multiplayer modes from Battlefront 2.
