This is the ultimate flying experience for star wars fans. This game offers an amazing single player experience, and a great ranked mode that feels extremely rewarding. Getting a kill is so satisfying. The game is a challenging experience that forces you to get better. Ignore the bad reviews. This game is awesome and offers something for everyone.

Boring game after the novelty wears off in an about 2 hours. Glad I was able to trial this game as I have no desire to purchase the full release. Locked first person view is lame. Cross play is garbage. Another bad Starwars game.

No player dialog or anything, so the best dialog is when two other characters start talking to each other and ignore you. There are only a little more than a dozen single player missions, which is disappointing.

Gameplay, single and multi-player, is pretty solid. Controls on a Xbox controller are pretty solid, and the visuals are nice. The cockpits especially show a lot of love and attention, which is good because you spend a lot of time there.

I'm hopeful that future support for this game, free or expansion pack/dlc will add on additional campaigns and ship/pilot customization; but right now $40 gets you a full game. A campaign that is good enough and serves to get you acquainted with all of the ships, and a fun multiplayer that is something I've been wishing for for ages.

Right now there are no microtransactions, loot box or otherwise. All the Cosmetics and Ship Side-grades are unlocked by playing the game. This *is* EA though so if you are looking at this game in 3-6 months you might want to check to make sure that hasn't changed.

Empty characters, zero enjoyable or memorable moments, repetitive gameplay, very short but still painfully boring. The playable character is a mute and you can't ever see him, the dialogues are totally irrelevant and a waste of time. PvP also lacks content so it's not tempting at all after 2-3 rounds of Dogfight and Fleet Battles. Technically it's a joke, the visuals and sounds are mediocre (would be ok 5 years ago) but the music is simply copied file by file from Battlefront 2. And I'm all for diversity, but not having a single white male even in the Empire is nonsense. Giving a character color without personality is contraproductive and just strengthens the stereotype of minority characters being bad. Expand

Not only the lag but the fact that the mouse aiming reticle does not auto-recenter (making your ship steer wildly if you have the reticle pulled to one side). While visually appealing (except for explosion debris) the game still feels "empty".

I don't know; even if the flaws were fixed in this game, there is not a whole lot to do. Can't see myself playing this long term whatsoever... wish I was still within the refund window. Not only are the flaws a turn off... but the agenda behind it all too. When will game companies realize we play video games to sometimes escape reality for a short time, the last thing I want in my entertainment is someone pushing propaganda at me.

Fun Game Mechanics once you get used to the combat. The rush of putting power into your engines to boost and use the drift maneuver to get behind an enemy, then put all your power into the blasters to shoot down an enemy pilot all while doing barrel rolls through an asteroid belt will never get old! Game mechanics make up for the lack of content.

I happen to somewhat agree with some of the points that some of them have raised (emphasis on “somewhat”), and I also don’t like seeing a corporate agenda being shoehorned into a fictional world that I love. I am all for equal representation, and something is better than nothing, but it’s not exactly subtle, to put it mildly. It clearly has overrun the risk of alienating some not-insignificant (albeit childish) subset of the game’s core audience for what is ultimately nothing more than cynical corporate virtue signaling.

HOWEVER, I have the ability to ignore the fact that I know WHY certain aesthetic decisions were demanded by the suits behind the scenes (and technically speaking, they are nothing more than aesthetic decisions), and recognize that the GAMEPLAY, which is the entire reason I bought the game in the first place, is finely-tuned and beautifully executed.

Seriously, to get to what should be the only point of discussion here, this game is FUN. The gameplay is surprisingly deep and complex without being too overwhelming. Mastering the controls, power management, ship upgrades, and combat strategy is extremely rewarding, and the whole experience is so damn immersive that I know I’ll be coming back to this game for years to come. It’s not necessary for your enjoyment, but if you can, do yourself a favor and play it in VR with a HOTAS setup.

SOLID 8.5/10 that I’m giving a 10 to offset the review bomb. Highly recommended for any Star Wars or flight sim fans that are looking for a bit of a challenge.

The story is a snorefest but hey at least there is a story? The match making servers are finicky at best and ranked games are not counted if a single person leaves during a match, let alone the match make ranking just places everyone in the bottom as of this review no matter how good or poorly you play.

I played with Mouse + Keyboard and this is my biggest gripe. If your mouse isn't even slightly centered there is a drift that completely screws with shooting. This game feels more like a half baked game jam idea that EA decided to slap a Star Wars label on and give too small of a budget and development window. It's overall frustrating after watching the trailers and gameplay, awing at the speed and agility of the ships but reality slaps you in the face. The piloting doesn't give you the feeling of speed or maneuverability, most of the time you are just aimlessly flying around. Battlefront 2 space battles are more akin to what I was expecting this entire game just feels off.

Edit- Before spending 40 bucks on this if you are a Star Wars fan maybe consider EA Play as a cheaper option to try.

Keep that in mind. That being said my counterpoint is most PvP games only have one or two viable modes you can jump in that are actually populated anyways. More maps would be nice.

A big complaint I'm seeing is poor performance and clunky UI/controls. I've had zero performance issues after roughly 20 hours in game. I'm playing on a higher end mid range PC with HOTAS. Don't expect to boot the game up and have your HOTAS setup in a way that makes sense. Every HOTAS is different and there is no conceivable way Motive would've been able to keymap it properly for each one that works for each player. That being said all of your controls are fully customizable. If you're having dead zone issues with your HOTAS maybe take a few minutes and set it up, there are deadzone options in game and you'll need to set it up with your HOTAS's driver as well. As you should with any flight sim type game you're playing.

I truly don't understand the complaint around identity politics. People are getting upset about a gay pilot because he mentions his husband once in an optional side conversation that for 100% of the game prior has been character backstory an exposition? Or is it the amount of females and POC in the campaign? Or is it the Mirilian, Trandoshan or Mimbanese that offends you? I'll grant there is a lack of white men in the campaign but honestly I'd take that offense as maybe an eye opener to what offends you and why. The campaign shoves absolutely no political or social issues at you, it is a Star Wars game and Star Wars campaign. There's no Trump jokes, no BLM shout outs and no gun law puns.

All of the prior being said the biggest shortcoming is lack of content in terms of multiplayer replayability. It wouldn't be so bad if there were more maps. That really highlights it in a way that's hard to ignore.

The campaign is solid, I really enjoyed it. Decent story and easy to follow. Played it through on the hardest difficulty and it was quite difficult. The complaints I've seen on it are the kind of stuff you could expect from any flight sim. You crash you die, don't crash. You go where you're not supposed to you die. It's not the kind of game where they can wall you in to prevent you going somewhere, you're in space. If you fly out of bounds the AI will kill you or you get the "turn around" notification. The AI was difficult but it encourages you to actually fly like you're avoiding getting hit. Flying in a straight line you're going to die. Change direction and they'll miss.

Overall from a PC/HOTAS player 9/10. More maps please.

To the game itself: I played the old rogue squadrons and so on. Really reminded of those, just better. Gameplay is absolutely fantastic and I'm looking forward to experiencing it in VR. Campaign is also very good, maybe not a very deep story, but good enough and definitely enough variety in missions. Getting all medals on the highest difficulty will be a challenge. Multiplayer I didn't play much. If you enjoy the core gameplay I see absolutely no problem. I hear people complaining about there not being enough variety, but the way I see it: What variety is there in racing, shooters, mobas, battle royales or whatever else might be popular? The core gameplay is fun as hell. For 40 $ I think this is a steal. Also props for no micro transactions or pay to win elements.

Great game, I hope they expand on it!

The current shortage of joysticks and throttles is a problem if you do not already have one, I don’t recommend playing with mouse and keyboard. Controller works week ends and is a lot easier to get your hands on right now if you don’t have one.

It was more important to make sure one of the characters has "preferred pronouns" and that another male pilot has a husband, than actually produce a game without significant bugs at launch. Multiple Crashes/Freezes for no reason and motion blur ruins the sky box in VR.

Initially fun, but quickly turns into a tedious grind. The story was basic, disappointing. The urge to remain politically correct has rendered elements of the game redundant. I would recommend waiting for a sale on this one rather than paying full price.

    [Character Customisation/Creation]

You can clearly tell that the desperate attempt to remain politically correct was given higher priority than other essential aspects of this game.

Each pilot (New Republic/Empire) has a default name which can't be edited. Which is absolutely pointless as it's not used at all during the entire campaign. They always refer to you as your call sign. You also pick a voice which is only used for one line in the entire game "I need a resupply" when you request one.

Then you've got the appearance. There are a male and female variation of every race available, However they've been very careful to not mention gender anywhere and allow you to use male voices for female and vice versa to check that politically correct box. The whole game is also in first person so you never see your customised character either.

The fact that voices aren't used, names aren't referenced and you never see your character during the entire game gives the impression that something was intended here, but the politically correct brigade stepped in last minute to make it redundant.

    [Controls]

These were awful, even by the end of the campaign they didn't seem right. Yes you do have the ability to remap them entirely, but the issue is that every single control is already in use, so it's hard to move anything from the thumb sticks.

For example the throttle up and down is on the left thumb stick, along with roll, which means you're constantly accidently affecting your speed when trying to manoeuvre or vice versa. Also worse is that if you click the left thumb stick it boosts your engine, which resulted in scenarios where I boosted into an obstacle several times.

If I were to remap, due to every button being in use, something hand to replace where the throttle sat and so would cause the same issue. Compared to other combat flight sims this was a poor.

    [Gameplay]

Tedious. I was hoping for a little more variety with the environment. Perhaps a land map where you're attacking ground targets. Instead everything is in space where you're either dog fighting or attacking the same capital ships over and over. It was initially fun, but quickly turned into a grind after the first few missions.

The ship selection is good, they've done well to ensure each ship has significant roles to play.

    [Virtual Reality]

Fantastic! You can see this was one of the key considerations. For me personally motion sickness is definitely a risk and I found myself requiring a good break between missions to recover. In fact for the last few missions I avoided using VR. The very fact that I did feel rough when barrel rolling and flying upside down is a credit to the realistic flight simulation this game provides.

    [Story]

Standard. From the trailers and initial revealed gameplay I was hoping for something deeper. Instead the Titan Squadron were the stereotypical bad guys who all possessed English accents (missed out xenophobia on the political correctness list there guys). Vanguard Squadron on the other hand all had American accents and played the underdog as usual.

I was hoping for more interaction with the members of the squadron, instead you get a brief dialogue with them sporadically in between missions where all you can do is listen, no interaction or opportunity to build a relationship whatsoever.

There is one point in the game where it gives the impression of a morale choice, but as it's one of the objectives anyway you have no choice.

For a non fully priced game it ticks all boxes for me and I am really enjoying it.

Only negative (because I like to always give one if I can) is that the ranked matches when someone quits you dont get the rank is really annoying as it hinders the progression.

There is no 40-hour campaign, there is a campaign though and a pleasant one to go through, without becoming too much of a tutorial. There are aspects that will bring back a lot of memories from the 90s titles such as X-Wing, TIE Fighter, BoP, XW:Alliance that become apparent, but not prevalent during your playthrough.
There is a multiplayer aspect and this is to provide longevity through 2 game modes and a handful of maps. People will want more, because they always do, but as an initial experience I find nothing lacking. You get to experience a Star Wars space sim without the archaic internet connection of the 90s and you get a chance to be part of a growing crowd of people that can help shape the game into an even better experience.
There are no microtransactions up to this point.
There is an issue with controls having little in the way of calibration (the deadzone issue might drive people insane) but the game has been out for 2 days, so there's confidence in the dev team's ability to resolve these in due time.
If your reasons for not liking this game revolve around minorities, sexual orientation and SJW issues, you weren't looking for a Star Wars space sim. This isn't the game you're looking for, move along.

But once I had everything up and running.. mannn, this is exactly what 8 year old me could have dreamed to play one day in the future. Being in a fast paced battle, all the original sounds, looking around the cockpits of every imperial and rebel fighter, whipping my head around to track enemy ships, looking back to see my R2 unit and every other aspect of the game VR is as close to being in a Star Wars movie battle sequence than anything I could have imagined!
I would wait in line for Squadrons in VR (with HOTAS controls) over Smuggler's Run at Disneyland.. if it were open.

I have to imagine the negative reviewers are either rating bombing the game, due to reasons having nothing to do with the game itself, or they just may not be fans of Star Wars, in general. I couldn't imagine any true fan of the movies not being at least somewhat impressed at what they've put together here.. for $40, no less!

Finally yea the game was made through woke colored glasses.
First you will notice you have very few characters for selection. Most of the choices are only female and I don't think one of them was even fair skinned. Apparently in the woke world, you are only worthy if you're not male and your skin color is beyond specific melatonin levels.

I would have settled for an alien race (as in out worldly) character selection, but apparently for the Silicon Valley, Critical Race Theory zealots, trying to mix an alien race into that ideology was too much and would have made their heads explode.

Campaign is pretty good with a lot of very cool and exciting moments, as well as memorable and fun characters. Unfortunately, the story, while very Star Wars-y, doesn't get to do much with the characters, and ends up mostly being about the clashing ideologies of Lindon Javes and Terisa Kerrill. The plot is mostly surface-level - Kerrill is mad at Javes for betraying the Empire, and Javes wants to redeem himself for his time as an Imperial commander by leading a new Rebel ship design project which Kerrill is determined to destroy. Both the Imperial and Rebel sides of the story get a happy ending for the squadrons, leaving an opening for Titan and Vanguard squadrons to appear in any sequels.

The gameplay is where Squadrons really shines, however. This game has the best starfighter mechanics since the 90s, hands down. It's roughly at the perfect level between sim and arcade flyer where it's still endlessly fun to fly, but it's also hard to perfect. Don't expect ships to fly like they do in Battlefront 2! And of course, the customisation is excellent. I kind of hope they keep adding new cosmetic items over time, but there's also enough here even if Motive never comes back to add to the game.

Now, the reason I'm giving the game a 10 instead of a 9? Well, that should be obvious. A whole bunch of angry trolls (most of whom probably just found out about this on Twitter rather than, you know, PLAYING THE GAME that they're mad it) learned that one of the characters (in my opinion, the best in the game!) is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. It's a very stupid thing to be angry about, and this game absolutely does not deserve a 4.7 rating just because some "snowflakes" got "triggered" by the awesome Bex Taylor-Klaus.

    Cons:
Re-mapping to a CH Flight sim yoke and pedals is absolute hell (more below)
The woke is definitely there with this title
The campaign is terrible, and has no soul
The deadzone for the yoke/pedals is huge and that's when it's turned all the way down. It's almost impossible to make tiny adjustments.

I didn't even get to try multiplayer because I can't get this damn game to function.

About what I experienced with the controls. I use a CH Products Flight Sim Yoke and Pedals. Re-mapping to the yoke is mostly ok. The real issue is the pedals. I ran into two issues. First, half the time when I attempt to map something to pedal input... the game will not detect it. This can be fixed by rebooting the game, which is dumb. The second issue is when I finally got it to accept a mapping (I tried mapping pedal input to roll and then yaw) and went to fly the ship would constantly spin, and I could not control it.

I don't care how good a game *looks*. I don't care if it costs five bucks or sixty. It is nothing if you can't actually play it. It's a flight sim. I want to use my yoke and pedals. Fix it then maybe I'll buy it again in the future. For now I'm refunding and advise everyone to stay the hell away from this buggy mess.

The best way to sum it up is to say that you get everything good from x-wing alliance and just trade it for a buggy version that looks pretty.

I haven't had time to look into Support ships yet, but it seems like they have some interesting options.

Playing this with Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Rudder Pedals, and HTC vive feels great. The resolution on the Vive could have been better, but everything you need to see is visible. It is clear that they have designed the UI to make sure everything you need is large enough in your cockpit to see with lower resolution VR.
I haven't noticed the deadzone issue I have heard about, but that could be because I have Yaw on the Rudder Pedals.

The cockpit looks pretty damn amazing in VR, but the flight controls were awful. There was a huge deadzone and was just frustrating. I booted up TIE Fighter just for hell of it after I got my refund on this. Its minimalist storytelling goes a lot further than this contrived tripe which will look cringey as hell in about 5 years.

FINALLY, we have one. This game is not only in the genre I like (which is, itself, a big plus for players like me), it's an excellent game in its own right. The campaign is meaty, replayable (different ways to play many of the missions, many achievements/medals to get), challenging, emotive, and most importantly, a lot of fun. It took me about 10 hours to get through the campaign, without trying to get all the medals, or playing with all the different starfighters and loadouts that are available. I can easily see myself putting 20-30 hours into the campaign, alone, in the near future.

The multiplayer aspect is also very well done. The biggest annoyance from X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, that I can remember, is that you basically just had open space with ships flying in circles around each other, and extremely simple objectives. In Star Wars: Squadrons, they both enhanced the classic dogfight mode with breathtaking and exciting terrain features (fighting in an astroid field, in and around a starbase, in a debris-filled nebula, etc.), and added a fast-paced strategic mode wherein you have to win an actual capital ship battle. I really can't speak enough about the thrill that both of these modes provide.

All that being said, this game is not for everyone. If you don't understand the controls, haven't played space combat games, and aren't willing to learn, you're probably going to be frustrated (and leave an undeservedly bad review on Metacritic...). However, if you're willing to put in the effort to learn how to play, you'll love this game.

Surprisingly, EA didn't include anymicrotransactions, in this game. Every single thing you can get is unlocked just by playing the game. Please ignore the review bombs on this topic; I'm inclined to say that they're either bots or morons. THERE ARE ZERO MICROTRANSACTIONS. I find it a great relief that a game from this venerable genre remains untarnished from such modern and unpopular inventions.

Bottom line: if you like flight sims, Star Wars, or space combat games, and are willing to learn how to play, you'll love this game. 10/10.

However, the gameplay controls in Star Wars Squadrons are terrible for space dogfighting and there are way better games out there that are far superior in every way if you want an actual enjoyable space battle game. The cockpit instruments are boring, the resource management, while simple, is not very intuitive during fast-paced battles, and the hud is boring and not very creative. Flight controls are a chore rather than feeling immersive or fun. To top that off, the story is mediocre and the characters are not likable, boring, corny, and frankly the alien races feel like something out of a poorly written sci-fi novel written for tweeners. This all makes for a game that is really meant to be played more like Battlefront 2 without the ground battles and frankly I'd probably rather play Battlefront 2 for the space battles than Squadrons because it was more enjoyable. And then there's the fact that for whatever reason unknown to me, after starting the game up a few hours after the first time I played it, the game was buggy with noticeable and frequent audio and video stuttering. I tried everything I could to remedy the problem including reinstalling the most up-to-date drivers, reinstalling the game, adjusting different graphics settings, locking the framerate at every different cap, and switching between fullscreen and borderless. Nothing seemed to remedy the problems though the game was playable after tolerating it for like 10 minutes or so. My hardware exceeds the recommended specs and none of my other games were causing me problems so I can only assume it was an not optimized game at launch. I am giving it a five because for Star Wars people that want to have pvp dogfights and space battles this game scratches that itch, but I do not recommend it. I ended up getting a refund for this game because it was just not for me. Expand

It's a beautiful space sim, with a surprisingly steep learning curve, flying is satysfying, action is hectic, and it actually emphesises teamwork (was on the receiving end of that one, sadly).
On the other hand: story is a placeholder, and the game suffers from a couple of technical glitches - HOTAS have too much deadzone, VR experience is shaky (i wasn't able to pull this off with my oculus quest, i'm hoping that it's a cable issue, but Virtual Desktop didn't work either). Supposedly, the origin version works much better in that scope then SteamVR one.
I hope - after few patches i hope thing will be much better.
But there is a looots of BS in the opinions - EVERY time i was flying TIE and bumped into something, i died in explosion. Didn't have ANY problem with mouse control. People are complaining about microtransactions - WHAT?
"For example, in the first Imperial mission, you're simply told to scan the ships cargo's. They don't tell you which ship to scan" -THEY DO!!!! They place a marker the size of a small moon. The guy who wrote that, actually regrets that the ships have to be in front of you in order to shoot them. I'm serious, check JackH2551. He also insist that everyone moves faster then him. ARGH!
People moaning that tutorials are tutorials, that spacesim is a spacesim, the doing objectives is hard, that playing game is hard... jesus, i want to poke my eys out sometimes.
TLDR: It's fun! I hope they polish it further, improve performance, add new ships (B-wing! Tie defender!), new modes, new maps, but i like what i've got so far - definately will be playing this in coming weeks like crazy, it already got me hooked (but aiming with flightstick is hars hehe).

When I first heard about this game, I was extremely excited for it. It looked like a lot of fun, the multiplayer looked interesting. I was hyped for it. Bought the game today, and requested a Steam refund within 1 hour of game play. This game is horrible and a HUGE disappointment. I watched videos and other gameplay footage, and what I experienced vs what I saw were night and day. Game play footage made this game look fast, fun, fluid and packed with action. In reality, the game play is the complete opposite. Its very slow (Even with max speed and full engine power). The controls are super clunky and unresponsive. And the combat is just bad and very poorly designed.

First things first, the story mode.... The story involves ANOTHER member of the Empire running away to join the Rebels. Gee, like we haven't seen that 8 billion times. Very predictable and uninteresting story. As for the missions themselves, they're super tedious and don't have any sort of direction whatsoever. For example, in the first Imperial mission, you're simply told to scan the ships cargo's. They don't tell you which ship to scan. They don't place any sort of marker on them or point you in the right direction. You're forced to just find it on you're own. There's at LEAST 20 ships, all spaced out. I spent a stupid amount of time searching for it, and I finally found it. After that, there was FINALLY some enemies to shoot, and experience combat. The combat was another disappointment.

As far as the combat goes... Another massive disappointment. The enemy ships are always super far away. You have to spend at least 30 seconds flying within shooting distance of them. On top of that, the enemies move lightning fast, while your ship - regardless of what ship you're flying - is super slow and clunky. To make things worst, you can't aim your guns. You literally can not aim your guns on your ship like in Battlefront. The enemy HAS to be right in front of you to shoot them. Its extremely frustrating and not fun. And while you're trying to get that perfect aim to shoot enemies, like 3-4 enemies get behind you instantly and start shooting you down, killing you. Trying to shake enemies off your tail is super frustrating as well. The game does little to nothing to explain how to have a better gaming experience by teaching you how to do sharper turns or shake enemies off your tail or get better at combat. There's no tutorials. There's no lessons or parts of the game that teach you to be better. The controls are frustratingly stupid and difficult. Normally, I have fun trying to learn a new game, but in this instance, I kept getting frustrated due to the games very poorly designed controls.

I was expecting this game to be an arcade style game. Something like Starfox 64 or Batttlefront 2 - just with Spaceships. But no. Some how, they took what made Battlefront 2 space battles fun, and made it a million times and more way complex. Battlefront 2 Space battles are super fast, fluid and fun. Where as Squadrons is super slow, tedious, and very clunky with terrible controls that are frustratingly stupid to maneuver and not fun to learn. Not only that, but the scanners in your cockpit that are meant to show you where enemies are, is extremely flawed and does not work very well. There is no real guide or explanation on how to read or use it to your advantage. This seems to be a common theme with this game. There is little to no explanation on how anything works, on where to go in the story mode or what to do. If the devs want people to enjoy their game, then they should have made an effort to explain it better, because everything in this game is super complex, does not make sense, and is frustratingly difficult to figure out. I don't like that one bit.

I don't understand why everything in this game is so slow? The "dog fights" are slow. Getting from point A to B is slow. The Slowing things down did NOT improve the game play. It sucks, because I was really excited for this game. I wanted to like this game. I gave it a try. But the terrible controls and slow, awful game play disappointed me big time. Thank god for Steam's return policy. As if 2020 couldn't get more disappointing, Squadrons came out and failed my expectations. They could have just made a fun, simple flight combat game like Starfox 64 or improve upon what made Battlefront 2 space battles so much fun. But no. They made this terrible FPS Flight Simulator type game, that's painfully slow and difficult to maneuver. On the bright side... The graphics and visuals are really nice. But that's all they got going for them. Everything about this game is horrible. I did not enjoy it one bit. Save your $40. Thank god for Steams refund policy. What a disappointment.

This game was welcomed with open arms, especially by critics and sometimes uncritically, as ironic as this may seem. Star Wars has a strong hold on people's heartstrings but gamers have found themselves disappointed for well over a decade now. What Star Wars Squadrons brings is not the saviour of the game series, but it is a shining ray of hope.

A lot of emphasis has been placed on the graphics here. When not in your ship, the cutscenes are impressive and observing them in the hangar is an impressive sight. The downside is that you don't get to free-roam; instead pointing and clicking from room-to-room which I suspect is to make VR smoother for gamers. Speaking of which, I did not play this in VR at all, so bear this in mind when reading my review. Having said that, I think there is a lot of space for improvement in the graphics department. The backgrounds are excellent, however these become repetitive. What I would like to see going forward is battles that take place not just in outer space, but on planets such as Tattooine to provide a variety of backdrops. One final note; the thing that annoyed me most was that I was limited to cockpit-view throughout the game. This is not my preferred POV so it quite marred the experience for me. You can tell they wanted to focus the game on VR but diversity is always better.

The story isn't anything special, and other than the appearance of Darth Vader at the beginning it really lacks some star power and figures from the movies to capture my interest. You play as a mostly nameless protagonist that you customise at the beginning of the game but this is rather limited, making me suspicious that microtransactions are on their way. A core element of the story was the constant switching between the Imperials and the Rebels for each mission. I would have much preferred to have chosen one side to play as consistently throughout the game and this could have opened up the option of having different endings depending on which side you choose. Instead, one minute you are in a Tie Fighter, then an X-Wing, then a Tie Interceptor followed by an A-Wing. Speaking of ships, where are the classics such as the Millennium Falcon? Canon or not I'd love to fly these ships again.

Finally, the gameplay. This is where I had a love-hate experience. Generally, flying and dogfighting is enjoyable, but what really took away from the experience for me was just how bloody slow all aircraft seem to be! Some have good speed and acceleration, however in a dogfight it takes forever to manoeuvre these, meaning that even on the easiest difficulty my enemies had an easy time flying rings around me. What this also means that I found it harder to tell the difference between the craft other than how the cockpit looked. This also pushed me towards a style of gameplay I'll call 'turreting', which is when your aircraft sits completely still in mid-air and you simply fire directly at opponents. I struggled to succeed with any other style of gameplay than this. Ace Combat 7 has captured gameplay fairly well so I don't know why a company like EA are struggling with the money they have behind them.

One more thing. I cannot conclude without stating how barebones this game is. Given the mediocre quality I'm actually happy that the campaign was so short so I didn't get too bored of it, however what I'm seeing is a game that's a platform for yet another live services model stuffed full of microtransactions. They aren't in the game yet but this is EA we're talking about, so watch closely and get it for less than £20, or not at all if the live services begin to fester into the game and ruin it. Overall, it's a step in the right direction but another missed opportunity.

This was the game that left me so disappointed that I was encouraged to make an account on Metacritic just to write this review.

The game is advertised as being playable with a mouse and keyboard. It isn’t. Unlike the old classics like Tie Fighter and Descent Freespace, moving the mouse does not have a direct effect on the ship movement but repositions a cursor toward which the ship turns (with a delay). This means that to stop turning, one has to reposition the cursor to the screen center. Doesn’t sound too bad, but since the game doesn’t draw the cursor, one has always to guess where it is and easily overshoots. The result is see-sawing back and forth all around where you really want to go. Now, a similar control scheme was used in the game House of the Dying Sun (which I think is a great game by the way), but it's only now that I realise how clever the developers of that game were in drawing a line between the cursor position and the ship heading. I guess they must’ve tested their game to realize that it made all the difference.

Now I’m not complaining that Star Wars Squadrons is a hard game. X-wing was a notoriously hard game and one of my all-time favourites. But, the difficulty was not introduced in having unresponsive controls. Possibly (although I am not sure) the developers of Squadrons were aware of their clumsy controls, which is why they put in autoaim and removed collision damage to compensate. The graphics are much better than the games of twenty years ago, but when I see a Tie-fighter collide directly with a Star Destroyer and simply bounce off the immersion is lost for me.

I can appreciate that those with other controllers are having a much better experience. But, sorry, the game is sold as being compatible with a mouse and keyboard, so I think it’s fully fair to write a review based solely on this experience. In principle, one could train hard to be able to learn the least intuitive controls I can remember, but I feel it’s equivalent to making a real-time strategy game where you can’t see the cursor. If you were very committed, you could learn to live with it, but would it be fun?

The GOOD: looks great mostly and sounds great and the idea is great and there are wow moments. It has some neat cockpits.

BAD: story is a tired cliche mess. Lots of tech issues and performance problems and the flight stick does not work as intended. Lacks polish and content. A few modes and 6 hrs single play with no secrets. A few old ships we've already used and no b-wings. Small maps for mp. Lots of hand holding and giant tutorials. VR cutscenes not in VR. DROIDS do nothing at all which is against lore and other games. The hub area is teleport rubbish. Nothing much to do and not hub space for MP. Cosmetics and upgrades change nothing. Only one view point. CAnnot use your hands in VR and flight stick doesnt move but throttle does. Many small issues too which distract from what could have been amazing. The game has not been play tested. You are paying to do that for them.

Also you're supporting Disney and EA so ...don't.

The one and only chance to be a space pilot in a galaxy far far away. Living and experiencing adrenaline filled dogfight is simply breathtaking. [Issue#307]

To put it simply, Star Wars: Squadrons is a low-budget X-Wing vs TIE Fighter II based off of Battlefront II’s space battles. I admit that I expected more, but after two decades we finally got a new Star Wars sim (leaning towards the arcade side, but still) and I did enjoy it. It looks and sounds like a Star Wars game should, and Motive’s successful effort to balance such dissimilar crafts as the X-Wing and the TIE Fighter is commendable. [12/2020, p.64]

There’s a good concept at the core of Star Wars: Squadrons, as flying a space fighter and managing its systems can be a lot of fun, however, you have to be a very dedicated Star Wars fan to enjoy a drab campaign with just a handful of memorable moments and watered-down multiplayer modes from Battlefront 2.
