Unless you've got friends willing to pass as potential victims, it's about a day's worth of cheap thrills. But those seeking a suitable multiplayer scrap should find themselves in good shape with this one.
-
If you want gritty, realistic combat action, go buy "United Offensive"—if you want the "digital crack" factor that has defined the Battlefield titles, and you dig the Star Wars series, then definitely give this one a try.
-
Despite the excellent technical aspects however, Battlefront ends up as a game without much of a soul, which without extra game modes or mods made by the fans will not last long in the multiplayer arena, where the battle is already heating up and where second place just doesn't cut it anymore.
-
Star Wars: Battlefront may sound like a bad idea, but Pandemic and LucasArts have delivered a polished experience with some seriously fun action, the opportunity for real strategy during the battles, and a new take on the Star Wars gaming experience overall.
-
The PC version is clearly the best, because it not only looks superior, it supports up to 32 players in a single battle.
-
Animation is fluid and the games frame rate manages to stay consistent no matter how frantic action become.
-
It should go without saying that the sights and sounds of Battlefront are top notch. The presentation, from menus to gameplay, is perfectly tailored to the identity of Star Wars.
-
The incredibly well-modeled levels, the accurately modeled weapons and vehicles, and the awesome straight-from-the-movie sounds greatly enhanced the experience and made it feel like I was truly in the midst of a huge battle.
-
If Lucasarts can tame its networking quirks, deepen the map selection, and iron out a few of its weapons and class wrinkles, Battlefront stands the chance of being the most addictive online game since "Counterstrike."
-
But once you take it online and play team versus team the fun factor really kicks in. AT-ATs shaking the ground, Ties and X-Wings battling it out in the air and the sounds of explosions and blaster fire all around you, any real Star Wars fans doesn't stand a chance at putting this game down.
-
games(TM)So much more about Battlefront manages to impress than disappoint ' from the solid gameplay to the overall application of the Star Wars universe, which has been done with so much care and attention that even the most hardened fan will be satisfied. If only all Star Wars games could be made this way. [Nov 2004, p.100]
-
PC GamerWe're given lots of initial wow factor, but Battlefont can't go the distance against the likes of the "Battlefield" series. I can't complain too much, though, because I still left the experience with a wide grin on my face. Battlefront is definitely a Star Wars geek's dream. [Holiday 2004, p.110]
-
An intense blast of pure Star Wars.
-
The multiplayer side of things, however, is excellent. The online play is smooth (depending on the server) and, truthfully, there's nothing quite like sneaking in to steal a control point right from under other players' noses.
-
The various combatants are well-balanced and there is a huge variety of vehicles and aircraft to pilot, including X-wings, TIE fighters, speeder bikes and hulking AT-STs.
-
Computer Games MagazineEnjoy Battlefront's quick, heady, affectionate rush while it lasts and pray they don't dumb it down any further. [Dec 2004, p.82]
-
Delivers a satisfying team-based shooter experience that many hardcore Star Wars fans will probably enjoy greatly. Ironically, though the PC version of the game is technically the best, it also faces the stiffest direct competition, because to many PC shooter fans the game may come off as old hat.
-
Oddly captivating in its mediocrity. If you're a Star Wars fan, you'll undoubtedly have a blast reliving the epic conflicts of the Star Wars universe, but at the same time you might find it a little too frustrating to enjoy and I could sympathize with that.
-
The force is just about strong enough to conceal the flaws. [Nov 2004]
-
Star Wars: Battlefront IS a network multiplayer game—you perhaps shouldn't expect it to be anything else.
-
When you get a whole group of you as Dark Troopers jetting all over the levels, blowing each other up and causing ridiculous mayhem, Battlefront is laugh-out-loud hilarious.
-
A fantastic game, the more I play, and the more I like it. Sure there is no real single player, but the online game makes up for it.
-
While it offers these amazing spectacles, thrilling battles, and remains a great account of what Star Wars battles must have felt like, there simply isn't enough content to keep the game going for months or years after its release.
-
Play MagazineThis is impressive stuff, especially given the amount of characters, vehicles and effects that the engine is shuffling around. [Nov 2004, p.84]
-
This game is good but not great. The game needed about another 3 to 6 months of development time to get some of the bugs worked out (specifically the AI and the weapons loadouts), but I have a feeling the pressure was on since they timed the game's release with the release of the original trilogy's DVD iteration.
-
It offers that shallow kind of fun that plays on the novelty of the experience rather than anything else. The game is undeniably well-polished, but the longevity value is a bit questionable for anything other than hardcore Star Wars fans.
-
Computer Gaming WorldBattlefront gives fans a perfectly good way to act out their fantasies of being a grunt in either of hte series' wars. [Holiday 2004, p.82]
-
Great for a weekend of Star Wars geekery with a bunch of friends, offering solid fun for the first four or five hours. After that, well, to impersonate Yoda: whether or not to own it you will want, only the future will tell.
-
This game frustrates where it should rejuvenate.
-
Buy with the knowledge that even the multiplayer mode can't save some environments from growing stale.
-
If you're a Star Wars fan and need to have the PC version, do yourself a favor and wait to pick this up on sale once all the patches have been released; after all, any game that lets you pick off Jawas and Ewoks can't be that bad.
-
Once you get the feel of the odd controls and figure out how everything works, every one of the single player modes are a throw away.
-
Sadly, an impressive graphical presentation and some surprisingly fun offline gameplay (I would've preferred a more storyline-oriented campaign, but the skirmish-styled gameplay is still quite entertaining) just aren't enough to make Star Wars: Battlefront anything more than an above-average title.
-
While it is fun for a short while, once the novelty wears off its lack of polish really shows through. It completely lacks innovation, doing nothing at all different than what we've seen a 100 times over by now.
