It's simply epic, and every Star Trek fan's heart swells at how many allusions and innuendos have been processed here, as for the sometimes strict Hater comments that exist, you have no idea what kind of heart and soul is put into this.

The old engine kind of ruins most things in the game. It's slow to download and laggy ,takes too much space, hard to play....

Incredibly archaic game. Graphics from the late 90s, mechanics from MMOs earlier than WoW. No cross-faction gameplay except for end-game content. F2P but everything is micro-transactions similar to SWTOR. It's also pretty obvious which things are new/recently developed versus stuff that was introduced in the first year. Ive been gaming since before most people knew what a computer was and Ive only seen worse ONCE in the history of gaming. I literally have code in the very first MMO type game that only military and DARPA researchers had access to.

Iv'e watched this game for a few years on and off while playing others that are far more stable and less greedy/grindy. Its not getting better, its getting worse, a lot worse. Let me explain and be very specific.

The game looks pretty good at first. Seems fun at first.

Then the big picture kicks in and it really starts to suck.

MASSIVE amounts of crashing completely, often in the middle of something you spent hours on.

Huge SLOW load times and data hog. Constantly updating the same stuff again and again.

Worst of all is their credit card transactions are not reliable and the zen points you pay for just randomly disappear and all you get back from customer service is LIP SERVICE.

Even when they document that a bug did occur and they have other victims they dont replace what you lose. As far as I am concerned they are nothing but a big organized rip off that should be shut down for credit card fraud. This game has turned into a total rip off the way Evony was before it was deservedly shut down.

These people should be sued. Ever since they got the STD (space disease known as Discovery) its been a total cash grab of pay to win credit card commandos, you get lousy ships unless you pay AT LEAST 30 dollars per ship and they have to spend at least 100 dollars more to get the gear to configure it.

ITS NOTHING BUT SCAM AFTER SCAM AFTER SCAM. All while pushing the preaching virtue signalling hype from that brainwashed idiot Abrahms.

Even if you can avoid paying money, suffer through the lag and slow loads and bugs, you still have to avoid huge parts of the game that are nothing but JJ-verse trash with bad voice acting often by original crappy cast and all the constant pushing of their thinly veiled political agenda along with the stupidest looking ships in the history of all of star trek.

STO SUCKS. Disco Sucks. STO = STD = A predatory blight on the gaming community.

The developers should be commended for what they have accomplished with limited resources and an aged game engine. The end game content, like many on-line games, is where this game starts to have issues. I last loaded this game up late last year. At that time most of the end game content involved Task Force Operation missions with difficulty levels that went from insulting to impossible unless you were using a min/maxed build and researched the mission in detail before queuing for it. The public queues often had long wait times with high rates of mission failure. The game is free to play but aggressively monetized. The game is pretty, the ships are especially well rendered, but the underlying game mechanics show their age. There are layers of different system mechanics and multiple currencies that do not always integrate well. For maximum enjoyment, I recommend a detailed reading of the game’s online Wiki and learning how to create custom keybind scripts. Doing this made it far more enjoyable for me. Overall I recommend this game for any gamer Star Trek fans or casual MMO players. The story missions are fully enjoyable without spending money. I personally hope to see this setting rebooted sometime in the future with a modern game engine. Expand

Out of that 60 hours, only 2-3 hours went to progression in campaign, the rest of those hours went to restarting missions because of bugs, doing same thing over and over again to get a chance to advance only to find out that during the delta quadrant voth campaign you get stuck on ridicelously hard mission. and thats hard on normal, not elite. without a tier 6 ship you might as well not attempt that mission. it's insane.

Oh and guess what? t6 ships are fleet only, but all the fleets are big guys so you can't actually contribute to them, or zen only, which again you have to farm months just for 1 ship. that alone won't quarantee your passage through the mission, as youtube guiodes all show that it takes enourmous amount of time just to be able to actually get some progress on the mission.

At this point it's only factors ledft are PvE, PVP arenas and patrols. oh...and guess what: you start a patrol, they add some random guy with you . you can't kick him. and if you leave you will be kicked from map. so you end up contesting for exp and loot. hell no.

thats the point i uninstalled the game. was stuck, tired of bugs(skipped half ther missions because they got stuck at some point or you couldn't even start them), and quite frankly when you take out the story, the game is so linear it's not even worth a try.

I could have been a fantastic MMO but for cryptic studio's it was never about making a fantastic MMO. It was about making fantastic amounts of money, and still is. I have a life time membership to this game and I deeply regret aver spending the money on it. It stopped being "fun" years ago. I also strongly suspect that one the US Government finally gets anti loot box laws passed this game will likely shut down, along with it's owning studio as they will no longer be able to sustain them selves via micro transactions around buying zen to buy keys to open loot boxes.

Space combat is all about gear and face rolling the keyboard. There is no real skill involved at all.
Once there was some skill involved but power creep and feature creep put paid to that long long ago. It's sad really. I could have been so much more. If "Star Trek" were not part of the title, this game would have failed years ago. It's really beyond bad.

Star Trek online is a sad, abused relic of a dying age. A creation followed with much interest during its initial announcement back in 2005 had the unfortunate curse of being born during the great MMO craze in which every online game was "like World of Warcraft but......" followed by some gimmick a marketing company had sworn was the real reason behind WoWs success.
Star Trek Online was therefore born devoid of any true originality as much of the new and experimental concepts behind it were dropped in favour of the same bland safe option being pumped out by every other MMO at the time.
Nine years of development and now within a market to which WoW is no longer King, would expect to see some of these older concepts realized as many other MMOs experiment with gameplay and features in an attempt to keep themselves relevant. Star Trek Online has proven to be unique is doing the exact opposite.
Nine years of development have not been kind to Star Trek Online and the game now represents a Frankenstein's monster of star trek-ish concepts lumped together into a game so riddled with bugs it makes Fallout 76 seem a well-polished game by comparison.
The game is unapologetically top heavy, with end game users expected to shell out up to $120 for high tier ships and ship packs, some of which are only obtainable through a loot box system, in order to stand a fair chance vs the end game enemies or compete in PvP and PvE tournaments and events.
That said, the premium end game content is accessible to anyone and though users who opt to keep their free ship may suffer a nail-biting frustrating experience each time they are forced into combat, it does showcase an array of masterfully created maps, photorealistic characters and well-written dialogue that is only let down by the voice actors themselves (more on that later).
This is in stark contrast to the games early and mid content in which first-time users can immerse themselves into an experience so laden with bugs, graphical glitches and popping artefacts one could be forgiven for believing they were playing a pre-alpha build.
The graphics of the early content is more reminiscent of the PS2 era, missions and quests are frequently bugged and often have to be replayed multiple times in order to complete, several cutscenes are either missing or distorted beyond all recognition, NPCs frequently switch between bad lip sync and static mouths depending on camera angles opting instead to simply bob their heads to the words as if they were rocking out to a particularly heavy metal anthem.
The remainder of the game represents a rollercoaster of ham-fisted bugged experiences overlayed by consistent connection issues with at least two disconnections per hour considered the average.

Various characters from the Star Trek franchise are shoe-horned in without context, in several cases replacing previously existing NPCs to which the players bridge crew will still often refer to, the dialogue never having been changed due to, what I can only presume is, laziness on part of the developers. Such issues are often frequent and NPCs throughout the game will frequently refer to events that have not happened, characters that do not exist or referring to the player character as the wrong faction, species and gender.
The addition of characters from the television series, as voiced by their original actors, is designed as a nostalgia fest for fans, but comes over more as a rather cringy attempt worthy of a fan film, with the only real difference being that fan films typically have higher production values than Star Trek Online.
Players are forced into missions which revolve entirely around these characters, the most significant example being the Dominion player opening quest line which features a who's who of characters both main and re-occurring from the Television Series Deep Space Nine, most of these characters feature little relevance to the plot other than to deliver exposition to the player and many are clearly phoning in their performances.
That said special credit must be made to LaVar Burton who's ham-fisted performance where he delivers each line of dialogue in such a monotone way you could be forgiven for believing him to genuinely be on the other end of a phone reading off a card. His special mission encompasses exactly 5 minutes of gameplay and during its debut STO ran an add campaign showcasing a series of podcasts LaVar Burton was in, in which he proclaimed his character 'Geordi La Forge' was gay and it was only because of "the oppression by white men" could the audience not see this.

The rest of the game is Star Trek by name only, it is sad to see the game in such a sorry state as it has become clear the developers are only interested in pursuing the creation of end-game content and over-powered 'premium' pay-to-win packs for the small percentage of players who will buy them.
    Recommend you avoid.

I've been playing this game for 5 years in a row, and I will play until it's death. Why? Because the game is gamer friendly. Why made this statement even if there are lootboxes and sometimes pay 2 win aspect? First thing first, you can get THREE free Tier6 ship per year, those ships have useful perks, also you can build a good set without any spending because you have options to grind them(and slaps this Endevour system in your face every day after reaching level 60. This system gives you a lot of in-game credits per day if you have time for dailies, and if you play well, you can loot trash items in battlezones, and sell them or simply salvage them for item stat reroll salvages.). The game have a TON of features like Admiralty, Duty officers, reputation(endgame) system(don't forget the game have nearly the same amount of active missions like The Nxxt Ganeration had [also doing missions gives you items that helps you progress]). Good perks are locked behind crates, BUT plenty of ZEN store ships have literally the same ability and also a lot cheaper than getting a lock box ship with literally no chance at all.
-- Suggestion: If you have 30 euros for it, buy Arbiter T6 battlecruiser for a start, it gives you 50percent less weapon energy consumption for 30secs if you activate emergency weapon 1-2-3 ability, with it you can maximize DPS easily, BUT! without it you can play well. There is a trick: Achieve delta reputation Tier4, slap "Enchanced Rending Shots" on ground and ship reputation slots. Voila, you do critical hits more frequent! And if you get a [CritD]x2 blue build(because thats a lot cheaper than a purple build for first build), you will combine frequent crits with bigger hit damages.--
Honestly, if the whole game is free, why would you bother if the game has microtransactions, it is OPTIONAL, it's like a cheat code to skip some content in-game in singleplayer games, but it has a price because it is a service in MMOs. Be smart, don't spend thousands of dollars for lockboxes, there are always methods to maximize your DPS and have a lot of fun wthout spending a cent.

    Cheers, and have fun!

You can play as the Federation or the Klingons. You can also play as the Romulans, but they are a half faction and you have to ally with either the Feds or KDF at the end of the Romulan story arc. There is no Cardassian faction, but you can make on in the character creator. There are no Cardassian ships except from old lockboxes. There is PVP, but it's very unbalanced. If you're F2P, you'll be largely outclassed by players foolish enough to spend hundreds of dollars on the ships they pump out. They re-use the same ships in different tiers. For example, tier 1-6. A tier 3 ship will be vastly outclassed by a tier 6 ship. If you're grinding away in a tier 3 ship to get a tier 6 ship, you may as well forget PVP because you'll just get owned. In other MMOs, they have battlegrounds or warzones with appropriate level and gear to practice and play in making PVP balanced more or less. Not happening in STO. In fact, PVP is virtually non-existent at this point. The greedy devs were more interested in creating a huge cash grab to bleed the wallets dry of people who are foolish enough to buy from them. However, there are some nice things about the game. If you like Star Trek you'll probably enjoy it. They made the crafting system better, so you can craft yourself some starting gear. It's no where near as good as end game gear, but it'll get you through the Task Force Ops. The music is OK. Weapon sounds and phaser animations need work. For example, the photon torpedo sounds like a TOS Photon, and the phaser beams are too wide. They don't behave or look anything like phasers from the show. Expand

I had one of these people shadow me for 8 months and Its really very disgusting what people are capable of while hiding behind the internet.. Its a free to play business model so there is no entrance barrier which allows for ultimately infinite accounts for any given player. Heres how this works, they bot the dilithium the in game currency that can be traded for zen, the paid currency, they then use the zen to buy lockbox keys and sell them on the exchange for EC (electronic credits) the in game currency that cant be traded for paid currency. They then bundle the EC on sites like ebay or sites they set up themselves and sell it for pennies on the dollar basically. They not only sell EC they sell the starships, keys, whatever else they can get their hands on. The game is more of a farm for thieves so beware there are a bunch that like to hang out in Earth Space Dock and you will never know which fleet leaders are botters just looking for your free dilithium contributions. Best advice I can give is stay away from this game at all costs there is no way to know who's who in a game that has no entrance barriers and old accounts are used to fake tenure (as new accounts have a number added after them, old accounts do not have a number). Steer clear its a trap. the game is fun but you are best to avoid it entirely. Expand

Before I begin, let me tell all the folks here that I am a founder (supported the game pre-beta did testing galore), and I was also one of the original lifetime members. In my time playing this game they gave false hope by making changes to the game that supported new skills and new ships which was fine until I found out that all of these were behind a pay wall.
    Cons:
    No exploration.

    RNG boxes for ships.
Bugs that have existed in the game since beta have never been fixed.
Excuses fill the forums as to why these things were never considered.
Game content is basically on automatic mode which means it's not really high quality.
Several time sinks taking months to complete such as advancement in reputations crafting etc.
The last straw, was the forced inclusion of the failed show called STD (aka Discovery).

Instead of supporting their player base those in charge have been slowly milking them for all they are worth. Every DLC that comes out includes boxes for which you have to buy RNG keys. You don't get enough of the box currency to do anything meaningful like building up a proper set of skip specific items such as console weapon combos. Those in charge are interested only in your money and nothing else.

If you talk about the precious (aka ST Discovery) you will be attacked by the forum mods. They will call you a bigot and ban you for speaking your mind. That's equivalent to AT&T deciding that they will cancel your service because you said a naughty word. I wouldn't waste your time.

I never played a game so broken in 20 years. Its a shame that CBS will never care about the franchise to avoid cheap and crappy companies like pwe/cryptic (who avoid completely quality control and bug fixing, and they keep releasing broken content as a regular rule), as long as they care only about $$$. The worst part is, the community of this game. Filled with rich kids and fanboys that keep giving pwe/cryptic money without even expecting a minimum quality control on the product. Ridiculous. Graphics: The Graphics aren't quite good, but not terrible either, I would prefer them over others. I rate Graphics at a 6/10
Pogression: 60 Levels (65 when V.I.L gets released), With 6 Tiers of ships, 1 of which requires ZEN (Premium Currency) to obtain, and a Sub-Tier, (T5-U). I will run through each Tier as follows.
    T1 Level 0-10, Starter Ships.
Very weak ships that do serve their purpose for lower levels, however lose efficiency after Level 10, where more effective ships are obtainable.
    T2: 10-20, Low-Midlevel Ships
An upgrade over T1, they have more weapons, consoles, BOFF seats etc. However they like T1, lose efficiency after level 20.
T3: 20-30, Mid-level These ships are definite upgrades over T2, and if done right can even hold their own vs high level areas, but are still lacking in comparison to higher tier.
T4: 30-40, Mid-Upper Level These ships are average, being more effective then T3 obviously,

T5 & T5-U: Upper Level, These i will give a more in depth description of, they are the ships you'll see high levels use the most (Aside from T6), having the better stats, and arguably the most ships, however you are often limited in your ship choices unless you pay zen, or contribute a bunch of resources to a Fleet with a Military Shipyard T5, (For all options) There are also Fleet Variants with higher health then average, but now onto the T5-U, Most ships have this as an option, but it requires a (Surprise surprise) Upgrade Token, which you pay about $5 for, or buy them on the Exchange for a stupidly high price. Once you do this, you can level the ship up for traits, and it has increased stats Now onto T6
T6: Level 50+ These are the most powerul in the game, earned in lockboxes, or bought for $30+, There was a event for the birthday of the game however that did give a free T6 Starship.
Progression rating: 4/10 due to the amount of microtransaction.

Buggy game, but latest patch brought bugs to an entirely new galaxy. Patcher has glitched, wasting 620 GB of data and costing me $200 in overages with Comcast. PWI refuses to guarantee a fix, give any sort of reparation (even in game items) or apologize in the least. Widespread according to support forum.

Use at your own risk. It could cause you MASSIVE data overage fees!

I only really started playing this game in 2018, and so far I've been enjoying it. It's a great game for Star Trek fans. This is a free to play MMO, with multiple quadrants to explore which are full of missions to play. I've only played by myself, have not bought any microtransactions, and I'm still in early game. I've also only played as one faction so far, Starfleet.

This is a free to play MMO, with multiple quadrants to explore which are full of missions to play. I've only played by myself, have not bought any microtransactions, and I'm still in early game. I've also only played as one faction so far, Starfleet.

    Pros:

    - Visuals: For a 2010 game it looks very nice (it probably got visual updates over the years)
    - Gameplay: The gameplay is very solid, combat in space feels fair and balanced. Attacking ships or objects is very satisfying. The ships really have some weight to them and the controls feel accurate.
    - Presentation: The Star Trek universe is very well repesented in this game. From the visual art-style to characters, the world makes sense.

    Cons:

    - Animation: The animations are very basic, often there's only one animation for an event (like falling, shooting, etc.)
    - Ground Combat: The ground combat has been glitchy in my experience, with enemies not approaching/attacking, guns refusing to fire, companions glitching around, and LOTS of clipping. While it ruins the immersion in the ground combat scenarios, the overall experience with these sections was still satisfactory for me.

    Informational:

    - Repetitive missions: The missions are all very similar and can feel repetitive. I don't feel like this is neccesarily a con though, because a Starfleet officer has a repetitive job. Scan this, defeat this ship, activate these things, etc. There's only just enough variation for me. The background story of missions, and locations and different types of enemies can make enough of a difference to make missions feel unique, even though to the core there's only a few different kind of missions.
-Freemium style economy: There are multiple currencies in the game, some of which can be bought with real money. I expected this naturally, since it is a F2P MMO. Never have I felt that the 'Zen currency' has been pushed in my face, nor do I feel like some paywalls are obstructing my enjoyment of the game. Some ships are locked behind this premium currency. However, missions often reward you with 'Dilithium', which is one of the in-game currencies. This currency can be traded for Zen. Therefore, there is really no content that can only be aquired through microtransactions.

    It's worth checking it out.

The game is fine. I'm not a fan of MMO games in general, and missions seemed to be go to this location, press the action button, repeat. I also don't like that you can't pause the game when life interrupts.

The idea to write the solo game in episodes is genius. No more hundred of open quests but one story for about 30-60 minutes, like an episode of the series. In an episode you explore the universe, fight against other ships or fight on the ground. In addition there are some classic quests also. The density of the story in an episode is perfect. There are many hints to all series and I advise you to check some internet fan sites to read about some backgrounds of the Star Trek world to understand more or to remember some content.

The gameplay is really good, i was surprised. The abilities, skills and item system is complex. Fighting is very motivating, because there are many elements to understand and it gives you a lot to think. Even after many hours of playing you will find many improvements in your build. I was expecting a game for the masses, but it is not. But unfortuntately the difficulty is too low and leveling is too fast.
    Music is good.
The game is f2p, but there is nothing necessary to buy in the shop. I wanted to buy something, but suddenly the game was deinstalled...look below:

The bad sides of the game are because of the miserable launch: Especially as a confederation officer you will have some boring missions in the beginning: The worlds are very boring, the missions very linear. The 2nd season is already better. As a clingone you dont have such boring mussions and overall the clingone part is much better in my view.
You need to load too much, because the worlds are too small, especially the universe should be bigger.
You can play this game alone, but for a MMORPG it is a problem I think. A pity, that Atari didnt look at Guild Wars, that has a great solo part, but it connects players better to play together. In STO there are some contents for groups, but I didnt do them.
In the later seasons you get really great episodes, but they are the same for clingones, confederation and romulans. This was a problem, because I wanted to continue with my clingone, but my confederation was further.
The next problem was the technique. In the new 8ths season, where I ve been there were new bugs for the whole game and it destroyed my motivation for the game, because other games are waiting to be played.

    ---->>>
I was surprised very positively. This game is great, especially if you play as a clingone. If you are a trekkie this game is a 10/10

These are completely false; do not be misguided. As a gamer who has played WoW and League, I was led to believe that this game was horrible since the space battles are auto-targeting and the skill cap is super low. Being a trekkie, I played anyways. I quickly learned that this game is absolutely fantastic. Yes, space battles are auto targeting. However, there are so many aspects to the combat, including the fact that you are fighting in a 3d space, not 2d like WoW, you need to position your ship to attack the weakened side of a ship, whilst protecting your weak shields, and all the weapons have a specific firing arc, meaning you need to bring your guns to bear.

Regarding the skill cap, it took me two years of competitive playing to get to level 60, not because the game forces you to farm, but because of the immense amount of in-game content. And, once I finally reached level 60, I thought I was done. Little did I know that in PvE and PvP level 60 players are pooled together. So, I went from dominating in PvP to getting my ass whooped when I went from level 59 to level 60. I have been playing the game now for SEVEN years, and I still am ways away from reaching end game level, nevermind being competitive.

The biggest thing, however, is versatility. If you think you've made a 'build' in a game, you don't know what a build is until you've played STO. First, you need to fill out your traits, of which there are about 40 to choose from. Then, you move on to your skills tree (yes, it's a completely separate thing from traits). Ok, done right? Now you do that again a minimum of EIGHT times since you customize skills and traits for each bridge officer. Then, you pick up to 70 duty officers, each having their own set of skills. After that, you pick out of the 80+ ships in the game, each having an entirely different style, with differing health, speed, turning radius, shield modifier, warp core type, and size. You then hand pick each of the minimum eight weapons you put on that ship. Each weapon can be either a beam, dual beam, cannon, dual cannon, heavy cannon, dual heavy cannon, turret, or omnidirectional beam. Each of those weapon types comes in over 20 different energy types. All of this, of course, doesn't count torpedoes, mines, and missiles. Each weapon can be from the mark I to XIV, will be built for DmG, Pen, Crit D, Crit Chance, Acc, Rad (radiation), and each of these can be paired, and stacked up to 4 times. This means you have literally 7x20x4x14x6!= 5 644 800 specific weapons to choose from, not counting stacking. Yeah.

THEN, you hand-pick for your ship out of 200+ shields, out of 300+ warp engines, out of 700+ deflector arrays, 500+ impulse engines, and, out of over 1000 consoles that boost and buff your ship in different ways.

All of this is for ONE faction, of which there are three to choose from. I won't even get into reputation, modifying weapons, researching new weapons, upgrading ships, retrofits, refits, enhancements, or fleet variants.

Finally, perhaps the most important thing is that this game has character, and it's ridiculously fun. Devs are always releasing new missions; problems are patched and fixed very quickly. All the equipment, characters, star systems, and races are straight from the tv shows, with some new and exciting additions. Honestly, I think STO's story should be the next tv series; it would bring Star Trek back. As for the game, join, or don't. There's already a lot of great players, but if you do join, you will surely not be disappointed. (Btw this is my honest review I'm not endorsed by STO it's just honestly that good)

I rather like Star Trek Online (STO). It’s one of my favorite games—and I literally had no interest in the game initially. It started on a gaming weekend when my friend and I were trying to find co-op games to play.

    Co-op

STO has decent co-op mission play where you can play STFs, and most episodes, and missions with co-op.

    Ever-expanding Storyline Content

The Good: The storyline in STO is constantly expanding. I really enjoy the new content as it makes the game come alive for me. The voice actors from the Star Trek screen actors is a real plus. Of course the content is also player driven as well with the Foundry. The storyline is often quite good and really immerses you in the game for hours and hours. You really feel like you are progressing and accomplishing something.

The Bad: Once you reach the end game there's next to nothing to do except grind for your Epic level gear. Elite STFs would be nice but not enough people play the game making the wait times extra long. Cryptic rolls out new content WAY too slowly and it's been getting even slower. In 2013 they had a ton of new content roll out back to back with the Delta Quadrant and the Iconian story line. Now, from 2015-2016 it feels like your in a never ending traffic jam. I really like this game but I'm losing interest now that I have four characters who have played through the mostly identical content.

    Short game/long game/mini-game

The Good: I like how STO mixes up what you can do given the time you have. For example, if you don’t have time to do an episode, you can join the space queue (Special Task Force/STF)and fight the enemy together for a 5-25 minute fight. Only five minutes to play? try—crafting, mining, admiralty, doff missions, buying and selling on the exchange and more.

The Bad: Star Trek Online is very, very grind heavy. This means you can totally finish the content and, perhaps, not even be half-way through with grinding for your Epic gear.

    DPS

The Good: I like to measure DPS with DPS parser and see how I’ve progressed by increasing my DPS with new spaceship items and configurations. DPS keeps you playing with greater interest in the game. DPS is complex and exciting. It's kept me playing the game a lot longer than I normally would have.

The Bad: STO should really incorporate DPS into their game model because there are so many awful players that think they're really doing damage but are actually doing next to nothing. DPS is mainly AOE based damage. If you go after just one target to bring it down, your DPS will go way down as well--this is unfortunate.

    Fleets

The Good: Like guilds in many other games, STO has fleets where you can interact and grow with other players. Fleets are a must for quality gear.

The Bad: One of my fleets is so popular and seasoned it's quite difficult to get new fleet credits for my new characters.

    Personally tired of “magical MMOs”

The Good: I’ve become very tired of all the MMOs with some kind of magical theme. In this aspect STO is truly refreshing—and even clean (my kids can even walk in while I'm playing the game and I don't have worry about what they'll see or hear).

The Bad: I'd imagine that mostly guys play this game and yet, they're creating Barbie dolls to play with as their next character roll...really?

Time Played Results in Direct Value

The Good: If you play with a goal in mind of what you’re trying to achieve (crafting, fleet consoles, character progression, upgrades, etc) you will achieve value every time you play the game. In my book, that’s a nice feeling.

The Bad: Drops for any seasoned character are close to worthless and there is way too much grinding for the content presented in the game. The admiralty system, doff missions become boring and repetitive -- I don't even read the text any more on those missions--it's just a click fest.

I definitely like STO more than I don't like it!

Forgot to mention -- spending money is not necessary. I feel that I spend money on things I actually want in the game. Cryptic has created even more ways to be very successful without spending any money at all. For example, I now have four characters that produce dilithium with the admiralty system. I can and do convert that dilithium into zen--real in game currency to buy real things--that you would have had to spend money for.

It's not only possible but very do-able to play for free. Regardless of your bent F2P or spend, the game does take time to progress--money just makes that progression quicker. However spending money can make you sloppy too--as it's no substitute for good planning.

    In Conclusion

To me, Star Trek's success heavily depends on rolling out new content to keep your immersion high. Not enough people play the elite STFs--even fleets don't seem to. Getting Epic gear is way to grindy and keeps going long after the content is completed and repeated. Still, it's a great game

It's hard to find a game more deserving of a 5/10. It's fun, but it's marred with so many hundreds of flaws. Broken animations, lazy design, boring missions, tedious missions, bugs that haven't been fixed in EIGHT YEARS of being reported.

It's obvious the owners do NOT care. It just pumps out new content, including new, pointless things to spend real money on, and leaves the old stuff

That being said the game DOES have it's charm. There ARE good sections, areas with good pacing, the space combat IS fun. But there's so many bad things that COULD be fixed, could be fixed in a couple months... that just... aren't... that I can't give this game a higher grade. I honestly think the 6.2 it has at the time of writing is too high.

Do you like star trek? do you like exploring the galaxy in your starship? discovering new species? settling diplomatic disputes? well than this is not the game for you!

First a recount of my latest encounter with this games support:

After playing this game for years and having beyond hundreds of hours into it, a glitch in the game deleted one of my ships and with it all of my gear, after contacting support and going back and forth for several days they ultimately told me there was nothing they were willing to do to help me... nothing at all.

The bottom line is this is a dying MMO with nearly no effort put into it, there is NOTHING to do in the end game, which will only take you about a weekend to reach max level. The whole game should just be put out of its misery and cryptic should learn how to re-evaluate how the currently treat the long term players and supports of this game, especially that still pay money to play a free to play game... They are an inept company that doesn't care about its customers
If they didn't have the star trek IP they would have gone out of business when Atari dumped them and part of me wishes they had...

The game play is weak, pretty much all you have to do is spam the space bar until you win, the writing and acting in the game are some of the worst i have ever seen, almost every "new" mission involves either time travel, and let me sum up ALL of the games story lines in one phrase - "The iconians did it" - This hardly mentioned in the show race is apparently responsible for every single event that has ever happened in the galaxy and has become Cryptic's all purpose excuse for poor writing and zero imagination every story line just leads back to an : it was the iconians moment...
There is nothing that makes Star Trek so wonderful and enjoyable in this game, no interactions with crew members, no dramatic writing, no exciting moments, no diplomatic responses to anything... simply power up shields - hit the space bar and pew pew to victory...

I think my time with STO has come to an end, I recommend if you are a current player you get out before what happened to me happens to you and if your considering playing it please don't, or at the very least don't give them a single penny of your hard earned money it isn't worth it and Cryptic/Perfect world simply doesn't care about any of their players and sadly I don't think they ever will.

The game itself is fraught with bugs, some of which have been around since the game launched. Not that I'm expecting perfection, but at least some effort towards remediation would be deserved.

Graphically, the game is unimpressive. STO has decent ship models but that's as far as it goes. The effects and animations are pretty lousy, like something I would expect from a 1990's video game. Game play is on par with the animations, unlike other MMO's, there's no strategy or tactics really to using abilities. You can just use ingame macro abilities to cycle every active ability you have as soon as its available and you've got a game where all you're doing is pressing a single key repeatedly.

Bottom line is, for me, that Craptic isn't worthy of getting my hard earned cash. The only reason that STO has a player base at all is because its Star Trek, and not even close to canon Star Trek at that. Really do wish someone else would come along and make a real Star Trek game. It'd be better than this crap...

The devs seem only able to focus on ship sales via gamble boxes and even introduced a crafting system that included gambling and is the only means of obtaining highest level gear. The PvE queues have been made more difficult for less reward, the end game grind has been increased 10 fold since "Delta Rising", and the devs admit they have no idea how to make ground maps interesting. Five years in and Andoria is still a wasteland and nothing of meaning can be performed from your bridge. Did I mention zero exploration? The entire plotline revolving around Dyson Spheres and Iconian super beings disgusts me. The universe is too vast and underdeveloped to be presenting the players with demi-god adversaries that require canon races to evolve thousands of years technologically in days to compete with. On the ground, you don't feel like a vulnerable away team just waiting to get blasted (and the in-game lore does a decent job explaining why). The opening story and following episodes are very entertaining, but at times repetitive in their objectives. The secondary features of the game may intimidate new players at first, but are well worth getting into. Some people may be put off by the amount of currency required to buy some of the truly top of the line ships, but it is possible to play this game, fully featured, without ever spending a nickel of real money. That approach can be a little grindy, so if you can afford to put US$10-20 towards some ZEN (game store currency), you may appreciate the later stages of the game a bit more. Expand

There is a lot good here, and a some not so good. First the good. There is a ton of content. even before you get to the other tuff like New Romulus or Delta Rising, the campaign is massive and takes easily into the hundreds of hours to go through, and I am still going through it all. I am currently Vice Admiral Rank. The ships are nicely rendered, though damage visualization is nothing special. Space combat is fun and you really feel like you are commanding a star ship. At levels up to Rear Admiral lower half you get a free, progressively more powerful ship. There are ships you can purchase with better stats, but to be honest, the only ship I purchased that was worth anything was the tier three Excelsior - and it was a bit of a rip off that the console that allowed free transwarp to pretty much everywhere in the galaxy only worked on this ship. The other ships, for the most part, don't have upgrade states enough to justify their cost (twenty-five to thirty dollars - only recommended once you get to tier 5 ships). One of the worst things about STO is the control system. It is very awkward. the only way to accurately control the ship is to hold both the left and right mouse buttons together and steer. The problem with this, is that many of the special functions (consoles) are activated by clicking them (hence, no more steering of the ship, a big no-no in a dog fight) or using alt-1, alt-2, ctrl-1, ctrl-2, etc. This is awkward in the extreme. Not so bad in earlier ships with only a few consoles, but when you have a dozen or so...well it really detracts from the experience. You can steer using WASD but with nowhere close to the finesse of using the two mouse buttons.

Ground combat has much the same problem, as in ground combat you are in shooter mode. The direction of the mouse points you in the way to go and w or s moves you back and forth. you can also strafe using D or A and double tapping any of these allows for a defensive roll. Not bad, except the special abilities in class specific kits as well as shield and hypo boosts (healing potions for the D and D minded out there) are using the same button combos as in space combat. And you need them much more as in ground combat, no mater how good your shield or body armor is, you are crap. I am trying to dodge all this stuff in coming and by the time I am fumbling with the buttons to use a hypo or shield recharge, I am dead. And this happens a lot, far more than in space combat. Really detracts from the experience. And the cool down times between uses of hypos or shield charges makes the whole thing worse.

The difficulty settings are normal, Advanced and Epic. Normal sees you more or less matched with equal targets and if you die, no chance of injury or ship damage upon respawn. Advanced sees a chance of injury and bosses that are ridiculously difficult, especially in Advanced or I can't even imagine epic. Not so bad in Space Combat, ridiculously aggravating in ground combat. I have died maybe 4 or 5 times in 52 levels of play in space combat, I have died at least a dozen and a half times in ground combat, and it seems the difficulty level spikes after you hit Captain. I would rather have an even shot in Normal while having the chance of injury upon death, than go advanced for the full experience and die 30 or 40 times cursing away as I go. And the awkward controls, in part, are a big reason for all the dying. Also, there is no real cover system in ground combat which would make for a slower but much more enjoyable and survivable game experience.

Still despite these and other complaints, I keep going back, because it is a fun game. But ship combat was done better in STC III (if I could meld those two games together, wowsa!) and almost anything is better than ground combat. I will not go so far as to say that ground combat is impossible, just unnecessarily frustrating.

    Final analysis -

Enjoyable with great Star Trek lore.
Immersive role playing experience (Ah, I remember when I was in an old Miranda Frigate, now I am in an Odyssey class cruiser!).
Enjoyable ship combat, crap ground combat.
Buy a Tier 5 ship and stick with it, it is the one you will keep a long time. Otherwise you will spend hundreds of dollars and most of the pay ships are not much better than the free ones at the respective Tiers.
A good game that could be far more with better controls.
I am glad it is F2P, I would not have paid the subscription fee...just not worth that amount of money.

This has been the true home of the Star Trek franchise for years now. Excellent game play. Many critics were obsessive-compulsives who expected far too much. Great fun in space and on the ground, two games in one.

I am not exactly a hardcore Star Trek Fan, but I did like the franchise so I decided to give this game a go. STO offers a decently long campaign where you can choose to be either a Federation, Romulan or Klingon character, though only the beginning of the missions are unique to the factions, the later parts of the story are similar. The game is also open world, with many different systems and sectors to visit. Most of the story is told through reading, either from other NPC and cut scenes. Some of the story even continues or relates to the television series of Star Trek, which is nice. Gameplay is third-person, with the option to switch to a first person like. Combat includes both ground combat (character vs NPC etc.) and space combat, including both PVE and PVP. Combat is pretty decent, with different tactics to go about in ship combat. There are a large variety of different weapons, gadgets, abilities and other equipments to go with your play style. Different grades and rarity of items exist, with the good items being hard to find. Almost all the ships from the star trek lore is in this game, from the Klingon Negh'Var to the Sovereign to even Dominion and other alien ships. Overall I did like the game play and the story, I had alot of fun from it.

Those were the good part of the game, now this is the bad part of the game. During the campaign, most of the story is through reading and combat, it gets dull quickly as a new player, you would be drawn into things like trying to level up to add more skill points, gain access to new ships, thus you would be tempted to just skipping all the reading and just quickly finishing missions. A lot more interaction could be used in the story. Then next, endgame content. After completing the story, you would only have normal MMO things left to do, which is to grind for currency, rare weapons, getting new traits, new ships and so on. You can enter dungeon like PVE game mode with fleets to earn items. However I find some extremely large problems for the end game content. Firstly, the ships. By playing through the campaign to level up, you will be granted free ships from a small selection of choice, starting from small escorts to larger cruisers, then battle cruisers. A total of 5-6 free ships. once you get the last ship which is the battle cruiser, the previous ships are mostly obsolete as they have less stats. However, the normal currency in this game, earned through selling unwanted items, or completing missions, cannot be used to buy any ship that would be at the same level as your last free ships, or better. A small choice of them requires Dilithium crystals, another primary currency. The problem is that you can only obtain the currency in 'ore' form, and to convert it, it's free but you can only convert 8000 a day. And the good ships that cost Dilithium cost like 120000 crystals! That would take you hours after hours of grinding, and even then you have to wait for 15 days. The majority of the good ships, that is 'Tier 5 and Tier 6', the biggest problem is that they can only be bought in 2 ways, real world money currency, Zen, or converting crystals to Zen then buying it. Each good ships cost way too much! Probably any player would want one of the faction specific dreadnoughts, like the Romulan Scimitar or the Federation Odyssey class. However 1000Zen cost $10, almost all of the good ships cost 2500-3000 Zen. That means each ship is about $25! You can earn your way up to buy it without real money but it will take you forever. With the current exchange rate of Dilithium to Zen from other real players, it will take roughly 50 days to convert 400k crystals to 2500Zen! And thats just for 1 ship and for 1 character! There are over 20+ of the good and nice ships in this game! There is currently no other way to go around this. This means that after enjoying your free new ships, you be stuck with that 1 cruiser for at least a month, and that is if you are really a hardcore MMO playing everyday! And this is just for ships. Both your character and your ships have intensive item customization. All the ultra rare items mostly cost way too much, or require a hybrid currency of Dilithium and others like fleet credits. All of these completely kills any endgame content unless your willing to fork out at least a hundred dollars. I have not played much of PVP, but I hear that the tier 6 ships is quite imbalanced for PVP.

Overall, I played the game for about 6 days, putting hours into my Klingon character to level 55.
While the story is decent, if your willing to read everything, the game quality is average, the graphics are extremely dated especially in this year 2014, and the game after the story is basically all the things you will see in an average MMO, just that its all spaceships. I cant really see any value putting hours into grinding in this game, and with an average quality, its a 5/10 for me.

    2) unlimited content: STO has a system called the foundry that lets players create their own missions and share them with other players. This means I have a brand new mission that I have never played before to look forward to every single time I log in. I will never run out of new missions to do, which is wild.

But hey, don't take my word for it. The game is free to play, so try it yourself and thank me later =P

I'm a fan of Star Trek, so it saddens me to see the license squandered on such a carelessly built game. There should be a limit to corporate greed, but Star Trek Online is, unfortunately, not the utopia the Federation is based on.

The story, the heart of main quest lines, is entirely forgettable. The plot points is interesting though cliche (war, shadow enemies, putting down rebellions), but poorly executed in game. The story is conveyed in a large block of text below a character portrait, with few animations, facial expressions, voice acting, or cutscenes to breath life into the story.

Star Trek Online does provide a possible source of engagement: bridge officers. But they also squander it. The bridge officers lack personality, distinctiveness. The same text is repeated just with different portraits. This is partially mitigated by the Romulan expansion with a single permanent crew member, but the game is better served simply having a fixed crew for all missions for the sake of story then allowing the user to select their own after.

The combat, particularly the ground combat, is a tedious affair. Moving 4 feet, engaging 10 enemies, then move another 4 feet, then engaging the SAME set of enemies. Repeat this for 8 more times before the 1st objective is complete. Then 2 more objectives to go! Nevermind the ground combat's mechanic complexity does not even extend beyond mashing attack and occasionally tossing out a special.

The scenarios are uninspired; go here scan this, go here kill this, go here protect this. All missions will follow these same patterns; the only difference is order. Playing the game is an exercise in patience; the equivalent of chopping digital trees ad nauseam. Time spent on these missions is wasted.

But the game breaker is the lack of polish. Icons do not line up properly with their description. Targeting is not fluid. The overall map does not relay where the next mission objective is. Numerous graphical glitches kill immersion. AI path finding and combat is broken. The list goes on.

Yet, there is still something to love. The space combat IS fun. The details on the ship, even if not in anything else, is great. The concept of bridge officers is interesting. It's unfortunate these features were not fully fleshed out.

There's still something here for Star Trek fans. But for anyone else, their money and time is better spent elsewhere.

My Biggest complaint however, comes from the fact that my best friend was banned permanently for sending me a private message which contained my Fleets website. No warning, instant ban. The system and policies behind this are asinine and are why i cannot recommend anyone play this game. Perfect world says they'll reinstate his account his account when he issues a statement that he was sharing "illicit" materials - they were not. I come to find out that several of our fleet Admins have been banned for the same reason.

Other minor complaints, the game feels rushed / low budget in a lot of respects. Many of the uniforms are bugged, having only half of the gear showing up and completely inadequate information regarding various damage types and differences between them.

The positives, the game isnt pay to win as so many other free to play models are. You can legitimately get everything within the game without using money (though this will take you longer) by trading dilithium for Zen on the trade market.

The game plays (in space) almost exactly like the old Orion Pirates star trek game that was released 10 years ago, same graphics and everything. I feel they could have done better.

I will continue to play this game from time to time until, at some point, they arbitrary ban me, at which point i will go somewhere away from perfect world inc. and i'll be perfectly fine with that.

Ships are very customisable through equipment and crew, combat is akin to a 3 dimensional Starfleet Command, which works just fine for me.

The galaxy has a real feel of 'everything falling apart at the seams' and the Federation bringing back into service anything that can mount a warp nacelle.

Even though i'm only a humble Lieutenant I've swept systems clean of Klingons engaged in impromptu fleet actions against The Borg and all sorts of good trekkie stuff. All in all I'm having a fine time and without it costing anything.

If you're a Trek fan then you've nothing to lose by putting an evening aside to play the tutorial and a couple of mission.

The game is not THAT Star Trek, which was the original reason for me getting the game. A few years later I have re-visited it now that it has the "legacy of Romulus" re-brand and plenty of time to improve. Once I'd worked out how to link my new download with my old STO purchase - and found little or no benefit to having paid £50-odd over what anyone downloading the free game has) I discovered how little improvement there seems to have been in the intervening years. My starship has twice got "stuck" colliding with other objects, in the second instance the game became juddered, jumped, became unresponsive, and left me open to being pummeled to death by Klingons because I couldn't steer, fight back, quit the mission. When I force close the program and log back in I'm still stuck in the same juddering mission unable to quit to the galaxy map. Missions are borked either by this weird stuck-and-judder problem I seem to get, or by the game's failure to detect that you've actually finished a mission, or by poorly written quest updates that you have to Google to deciper. When missions work, they are mostly very dry fetch or kill quests. My desire to see a living Star Trek universe was great, and at least there is plenty of Star Trek in the design. But the universe feels empty and restricted - small stations, limited freedom between linear quests. A bizarre combination of a quite lovely warp area map, let down by a flat, un-interactive galaxy map, add to the feeling of incompleteness. Much is made by some reviewers out of the ability to customize ships or appearance - but it seems to come at the expense of gameplay, which revolves around dull, repetitive, pillar-to-post missions. Some people seem to like the space combat - but we're not seeing it from a bridge so this immediately felt less Star Trek-esque to me. It's also restricted to a sort of deep plane (rather than the 3D of space) so it feels less like space combat than the original Elite! Combat consists mainly of Warcraft-style button pushing with a little scope for steering tactics (e.g. broadsiding with phasers to bring the shields down, then turning to face to unleash a finishing torpedo). STO could have been so good! But how long do you really want to spend being told to run from one person to another, then pushing "1" or "2" repeatedly while bad guys fall over, however attractive the scenery and backstory? This is an online game with almost 0 multiplayer options. Although this is a mockery to star trek, after I haven't played a while this game, I wanted again to drive the intrepid few more times. Well I couldn't, because Cryptic banned my account for some reason and wouldn't give me it back. Pathetic as they are, they even don't respect their players.

    I'll give it a 1, only because I can't give a 0 to something that has"Star Trek" in it's name.

This game has a lot of detail, unfortunately most of it is useless filler. What isn't filler is unorganized, inefficient and boring. Especially ground missions which is running through a series of hallway connected rooms activating consoles and fighting groups of enemies. Or you in a small area outside on some planet doing the same. This formula is pretty much the main aspect of ground play. Regardless of WHAT you have to do the formula to do it the same.

If you like PVP, play this game, if you don't like PvP you won't get much from this game unless you're a diehard Star Trek fan that just wants ANYTHING Star Trek.

Eventually, it is a repetitive treadmill grind at best. Now it's becoming more so than ever.

It is not worth your money!!!

Cryptic Studios mistreat their customers and treat their players as cash-cows to milk. The game has bugs which were never treated. Indefinite customer complaints which were ignored. Broken promises which are repeated since beta. The list goes on.
There is just not enough room here to begin to detail how poorly the game is hang together by spit and gum and how horribly they manage their community and abuse their players.
Lets not even mention how they trample and pee over the Star Trek franchise, incase you're an actual fan.

Thus my suggestion: if you want a free ride, go on and enjoy it. But never spend a dime on it. It doesn't deserve it and it will only make you regret it.

Everything you can get for premium currency you can also grind off in-game currency. there are no hard limits to what a free and paying player can thus achieve (except of course a paying player gets it faster). Leveling is easy in my opinion and there's lots to do. I'm a solo player, but this game is best enjoyed with a group of friends who can play together when they hit level cap. This is also the only mmo I play that I leave and then return to over and over... The only problem perhaps is the fact that this game is heavily instanced, with set locations so no feel of one of Star Treks core values, 'Exploration', can be readily experienced. Though I suppose events and such may simulate that. I fully expect the game to get even better with ongoing updates and such. Expand

For a free-to-play MMO, this game is well above average. The production values, music, and what little voice acting there is, is excellent quality. The game feels quite polished, and for a starship junkie like me, the ships all look fantastic. The main quest chain is gripping and enjoyable, and makes leveling a breeze; a good balance of investment and reward as you level a character.

The lifetime subscription to this game is quite a bargain at $200 USD, which equates to about 13 months of game time of a typical $15/month MMO, and will unlock everything that f2p players cannot access without microtransaction.

In contrast to other free-to-play MMOs, the microtransactions in this game are kept to a minimum; all purchases made from the Cash shop are entirely cosmetic, having little to no impact on actual gameplay, and are not necessary in any situation to progress your character. In addition, an in-game currency called Dilithium can be converted in large amounts to cash shop credit, offering a cheaper alternative for those who don't wish to spend cash, but spend a lot of time playing.

The space combat in this game is excellent. You have direct control over your ship and it's stations, with everything being laid out in front of you, and basic starship command is very intuitive. The controls are tight and concise, and is easily my favorite part about my STO experience.

Ground combat is another story, however. On the ground, your skills are wildly different from that in space (of course), and your efficiency on the ground will be defined entirely by your away team (your group of starship officers that follow you to the ground). Ground combat is wildly more difficult than space combat, with much more focus on movement, equipment, environmental hazards, and multiple groups of powerful enemies. Coupled with the rather basic shoot-em-up feel of mashing your weapon attack, ground missions will wear out their welcome to most.

The game's loose storyline and setting stays very true to old canon, commonly alluding to the stories and experiences of James Kirk, Jean Luc Picard, and even Kathryn Janeway in their respective series as you explore the galaxy.

Exploration itself, however, is somewhat lacking. For a world as open as this one, the experiences you'll have among sectors and it's planets is mostly predictable and simple. Almost all missions consist of no more than destroying some ships, or scanning some structures. While an over-arcing story helps break the monotony or tie things together, most open-world encounters have no larger plot or worthwhile reward for time invested, making them more akin to little mini-episodes and slightly less gripping as a result.

If you're one for playing solo, you will quickly discover that upon reaching level cap and completing the official episodes, you will have very little to do. In comparison to other MMOs, the amount of group content is scant at best, and repeating the same few group events dozens of times may quickly wear thin. I personally suggest you play this game with friends, or join a role-playing fleet (guild) to keep entertained and break the monotony of grinding the same few events all day every day.

All MMOs have some grind in them; STO's problem is that there is no variety on what you can grind. If you want to be a Borg-slayer and join that NPC faction, you'll be running 5 of the same events for months. If you want to assist the Romulans, you'll have a lifetime of ground missions (primarily babysitting and kill-quests) to run around doing.

However I can't be too harsh. For a free-to-play, this game is definitely better than most. It's enjoyable moreso with friends well polished, and a great game for Star Trek fans who've always wanted to run around inside their ships, or sit at the helm and fight among the stars.

I find the game very high quality, personally, but the community is among the ugliest I've seen in any MMO to date. Every online game has it's elitists, it's dev-haters, and stop-having-fun crowd, but STO's community seems to house of the most intense of all of these. You can bet any "problems" with the game will be loudly vocalized, and when the servers are brought down to repair said problem, you can expect to see an equal amount of hatred directed towards the developers for the unstable servers.

Community can be filtered out, however, and basing my score solely off what I get from the game, I can rest with an 8.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The lore itself is done well. With the addition of Legacy of Romulus you gain a new faction and new ships, and the addition of (finally!) warp cores/singularity cores.
However, the core of it hasn't changed... a lot of the same old lot grinding, with plenty of bugs which are years old and plenty gamebreaking new ones. Also, with Perfect World having taken over, nickel&diming is the rule, not the exception. If you want to compete in end-game PvE or PvP paying real money is a near-must. The last and best equipped tier of ships (Tier-5) for the level 50's can be bought with dilithium, fleet credits and/or Zen. However, the amount of grinding necessary for the first 2 options is incredible, and while you can get Zen through trading dilithium for it, the grinding necessary for it is just IQ-killing. Making you often just pay for the 'last' ship, or keeping on the lesser strong ship from level 40.

Also the Zen-bought ships have the thing that they have at level 40+ always an very handy console or special ability which you actually don't want to ignore.

Last but not least: Cryptic has recently restricted the amount of stuff you can keep in your mail without an announcement about it, pissing off a lot of long-term players. Also the NPCs have gotten some 'special' attacks that you cannot see nor react on which can, depending on the category of the ship you're flying and the current health of your ship (let's say around 50%), kill you outright in one shot while they have gotten a major upgrade in damage resistance making fights very tedious and long.

To sum it up: nickel&diming, grinding, still a lot of bugs (including some really old ones). Positive is that Cryptic seems to treat the lore with respect and they are willing to introduce new stuff to make it come a bit more closer to how Star Trek should 'feel like'. Too bad the cons against this game are starting to overwhelm the pros....

Lets start with how STO earned it's 6 starts before then rapidly losing 5. It's a pretty descend MMO thou without any doubt somewhat dated and lackluster. One of the biggest complaints (a side from the Zynga-isme which we'll get to in a bit) is that the game is compiled of a series of endless instances which in turn means you'll spend a good amount of time going through loading screens which truly can break immersion.
As a PvE experience you going to have a good time if you're a Trekkie as a Sci-Fi fan you'll be happy too if you can glance past the countless bugs and hiccups you are sure to encounter during your missions.

Now lets get to what this game has degraded to since it took up the infamous Free 2 Play business model. Rumor has it that the executive producer Daniel Stahl once upon a time was a intern at Zynga Inc. and Oh Boi did he pick up a neat trick or two. You can now describe STO in a few simple concepts *1. Narly gambling (lock boxes) *2. Endless grind (time-gated reputation system) *3. The Ultimate MMO Power Trip (starbases provides insane value both in terms of time spend and real world moneys).

PvP is straight up Pay to Win and since there isn't much else to do once you reach end-game you are going to have a bad time luckily you can choose well at least as a federation character to stay clear of any PvP mischiefs.

My hope is that the future of gaming will be about creating great game mechanics and giving players unforgettable experiences and the period of how to manipulate game-play and thus players for maximum profit will became a brief and shameful footnote in development history.

Basically you could be whoever you wished in Starfleet or the Klingon Empire. Another plus is how the story unfolds in "episodes" over an entire arc involving one enemy race as the primary antagonist, the game's equivalent to a regular season. However, the combat suffers from the same repetitive tactics in every single mission/episode. The biggest frustrations came from battling the Romulans. Every single space battle that happens, the Romulan ships always pull the cheapest maneuvers to instantly destroy your starship, the most used one being where the Romulans hold your ship still with a tractor beam before unloading a massive volley of heavy plasma torpedoes that quickly overload your shields and destroy your ship in one shot. That would be fine if they used it a few times, but the AI seeks to *abuse* that tactic as much as possible in every single mission's space battle (all within the Romulan "season"), causing the mission to be nearly impossible to complete even though the difficulty of the mission is the same as the level your character is at when you attempt it. The ground battles are nearly the opposite. The ground missions are generally very, very easy compared to the space battles if your away team has good synergy between the skills you've given them to use in battle.

Another issue I have is the exploration. Whenever I'm between missions, I wanted to explore some random world to feel like a true explorer, as was promised from the first looks of the game prior to its release. Instead, I'm forced to stay in space to either 1) run an errand for a new race, 2) fight a battle, or 3) answer a distress call. Afterwards, there isn't even an option to explore the world, at least as far as I knew after scanning the entire UI for the option.

So, here is the bottom line.
    Pros:
    + huge universe to explore
+ visiting familiar places from all of the TV series before Enterprise
    + varied missions
+ the TV-series-like feel of the story missions

    Cons (in minuses):
    - AI repeatedly abusing cheap maneuvers in space battles to get insta-kills
    - ground battles are too easy in comparison to space battles (PvE)
    - no option to explore random worlds

The abusive AI in the PvE space battles were way too much for me to continue playing the game any further and I stopped playing. If I ever go back to it, I hope the AI has been improved to where they stop spamming the same one-shot-kill tactic in every single space battle (as the Romulans).

The game amounts to grinding for weapons and upgrades and then attempting to take on elite battles against NPCs or other elite human players just to find out that the past 3 weeks of grinding to upgrade your weapons was not nearly enough... I have repeated this trend in the game 20-30 times and have had enough. OK, that sums up space combat...
Now for ground combat. Is there anyone who does not think that diving behind cover should then allow the NPCs to continue to fire through the cover and kill you? Really? The engine is a hit or no hit engine without any critical hit areas defines on the body map of the player. So head shots mean nothing. Ground cover means nothing. Just grind grind grind to get a better weapon and hope that your skill set matches the mission you are about to take on for the 100th time...

One of the best Space Combat I have ever played. Fans of Star Trek would probably like that segment of the game. However, the mission systems were a bit mundane and upsetting, I basically skipped all of it as I had no intention or mind to play them despite the rewards given. Lots of boundaries which may require you to use Real-World-Money in order to secure the best game-play. AlthoughOne of the best Space Combat I have ever played. Uggg. Another game with great potential and a background story that is unique. Again we have another game with stale mechanics. If you made the graphics neutral you could probably swap this out for LOTR Online and have the same game. The linear quest lines have been dated for over a decade now. It is a shame the makers couldn't give this title some originality instead of just banking on the name.

7 out of 10 But to be honest about 5 of that is just for it being Star Trek and holding onto most cannon very well. The Ship, Racial, Weapons, and astronomic designs are excellent. But the game itself despite drastic improvements since launch. Is very basic, bland rinse and repeat gaming, which is still a minefield of bugs and glitches. Ground combat is irritating, reminding me of a broken resident evil 1 turret control scheme, combined with ridiculously borked weapons, with stats, and skills, that mean nothing to the average gamer..
The Space Combat is alright, its mostly what I play the game for now that I have level capped cause when you cap out there really isn't much left but PVE Events and Borg Missions. PvP is almost non existence going hours at a time without an instance starting sometimes. The space controls are excellent, it just takes awhile to get used to and realize a star ship doesn't steer like a smaller craft, Its like driving a bathtub in zero g. But once you practice a bit you can get some nice maneuverability, and sometimes intense dogfights. Which I enjoy very much.
All in All this game is especially for people who already like Star Trek and are familiar with the various story lines from the TV series. Other wise this game is a solid 2 out of 10.
Also Cryptic seriously needs to learn consistency when it comes to Markers for mission objectives, it would make things much less irritating. Objective Markers, a compass, something!!

I feel its wrong of people to give a game with as many bugs as this 10/10. 10 means perfect and this game is far from perfect. Cryptic have added more stuff since launch but have totally failed to iron out even the simplest bugs. I have made PD games since 1989 and I can see where the developers have been lazy or not thought about design. Eg planets merging with background planes. Overuse of asteroids etc so Cryptic are forced to have really short pop up (just reduce the number of objects Cryptic jeez!). Now 2 years and 8 months since the game has launched and nearly 2 years since my initial review. In that time STO has not improved much. Failing in a subscription model Cryptic/PWE switched to a F2P model. Unlike many other F2P models, this one is a blatant cash grab and none of the transaction can be considered "micro". As far as content and systems go, nothing from my previous review has been addressed such as exploration, crafting PvP, factional systems, etc... leaving these important game systems in poor shape. In addition, the player-base has received word that the Feature Episode Series has been canceled, these missions were highly acclaimed by the player base. The only deep system the game has is the Duty Officer System, the new Fleet System was recently introduced but is indicative of the heavy grind found in asian MMO's where the reward is hardly worth the effort placed into it. From here, I will review the game's new season, Season 6 Under Seige. With $7 costumes to $20, you can only get per character, and lottery boxes with poor rewards abounding, the direction of economic model of this game will cause its ultimate failure. Season 6 took nearly 8 months to develop and while the system and generally the artwork are great, the poor content, rewards, and buggy aspects far out-shadow anything good. The monitization hooks abound in the Fleet System with some estimates saying the dollar cost of a fully functional Starbase is $1,500. The introduction of Season 6 came plagued with game breaking bugs to the Foundry, exchange, mail system, combat system to which Cryptic has been slow to respond to. In all, Season 6 has a good foundation that was poorly capitalized on by Cryptic. Even though this "shoot-em-up" version of the Star Trek Universe is F2P, I would recommend passing until the game could be fleshed out more. Expand

I've play this game a long time. I like this game and I can't say it have any mis take. This game is good change from games like Battlestar Galactica online. It's not same and this is a reason why is it so good. I'm not so good at speech so I don't have any ideas what I can say. Finaly: This game is awesome and I would to invite everyone who like Star Trek or "space ships games".

Gameplay is split between ship-based and character-based settings.

In space, you command your starship as you explore the galaxy and engage in ship-to-ship battles. You can customize your ship both visually and functionally - equipping various weapons and gadgets, as well as tweaking the appearance of your ship.

On the ground, you command a small away-team as you battle your way through enemy forces or simply explore an interesting planet. Tons of cosmetic options are available to change the look of your character as well as the rest of your bridge officers. And there's also weapons and armor to wear into battle.

Gameplay does a terrific job of mirroring the franchise. It isn't just all-combat, all the time. Missions might involve delivering supplies to a planet in need, or surveying some unusual readings, or traveling through time to un-do alterations to the timeline.

The graphics are good... But not outstanding. The game has been out for a while now, and the engine is starting to show its age. Nothing bad, mind you, but it isn't as spectacular as some more recent titles.

Where the visuals simply shine is in their accuracy. Everything looks like it should. It's immediately obvious that you're playing a Star Trek game. And, further obvious that you're in a Federation environment rather than a Klingon one, or Romulan. They all look very distinctive. All look just like they should.

The sounds, similarly, perfectly match what you'd expect from the franchise. The hum of a tractor beam, the whine of phasors, the twinkle of transporters. It's all there. And it's all exactly like it should be.

The game is free-to-play now, which means there's no monthly subscription. But that also means there's plenty of things to spend money on. Inventory expansions, cosmetic options for your characters, specialty ships, more character slots, bonus XP... It'd be very easy to spend an awful lot of money in this game.

But, at the same time, there are no real barriers to progress. There's an awful lot that you can spend money on... But there really isn't much that you have to spend money on. It's perfectly reasonable to play all the way up to level cap without spending one cent.

As of the time of this review, Star Trek Online is still seeing active development, with Episode Six having just been released last week. Lots of changes and new content. Plenty to keep the game interesting.

    Definitely worth checking out.

The maps will be randomized from varied patterns so every time you explore strange new worlds, you find different maps. Later you recognize the patterns but that is okay and amazing. You can delegate duty missions with your crew members, craft ship items, train officers, play endless missions, mine dilitium, explore for your own or in teams or fleets and more. The difficult is mostly balanced and in status presents (summer 2012) comparatively few bugs. It is not a hysteric shoot and die game like so many. For me the game is mostly better than mass effect, because the freedom of the game an one of the best F2P games i have played. Expand

When I heard it was free to play I signed up to play, after playing the demo a few years earlier I new what I was getting into and I thought I would love it. I created my character using on of the best character creators I have seen in an MMO (Especially creating my own alien) I eventually settled with a trill captain an prepared to go boldly where no gamer has gone before (Pardon the pun) I delved straight in. I started playing through the story. A disappointing affair to say the least. When a brand says Star Trek, one expects much more than the general 'go in and slaughter them all' attitude in most MMO's, I was expecting diplomacy and exploration
instead I got caught up in destruction and espionage. All that aside the foundry is a fantastic feature, the ability to create my own missions is fantastic (although I haven't quite grasped it) and again the system for character creation is great. Then their is Klingon play, it's underdeveloped and I found it horrible to play, the ability to play as 'the enemy' got me exciting but it was horrible, Cryptic have put next to no thought into the Klingon side. So in short Star Trek Online has potential, but it trips up on many hurdles, it has not stopped me from playing it and quite enjoying it.

WOW game mechanics like linear progression, tank-nuker-healer, taints every opinion I have on a game; basically I loath it. I've been there, done that, and I don't want to do it anymore.

  1. This is as fine a[n] homage to one of Sci-fi's great franchises a[s] you can get in an MMO format.
  2. Despite all of these complaints, those hordes of starship captains are quite happy. They may not have many different things to do, and the missions and UI may be rather buggy, but there does seem to be enough content to sustain them - at least until the endgame - and even at its worst that content is knockabout fun with more instant appeal, and more suitability for casual, short-session, low-commitment play than most MMOs.

It is one of the worthier options among the titles which try to compete with WoW, and the one that has convinced us the most to date.
