A truly entertaining little strategy game. Offering just enough complexity to test a player's strategic thinking, it's backed by steady, effective aesthetic direction and a mass of scenarios that almost - almost! - make up for the lack of multiplayer to make for one of the finest indie games so far in 2015.

Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy is tactical space battle, with really good and innovative battle module. Unfortunately it also has possibly the worst campaign presentation ever in history of videogaming. Ugly heads talk and talk and talk. And talk some more. [Aug 2015]

With some more creative level design and a fully fleshed-out campaign, Star Hammer could have really been something special.
  4. First mission greets us with cheesy music, cheap special effects and blocky spaceships from an age long past. Time to file for a refund? Not just yet: despite poor presentation, Star Hammer is a very nice strategy. [Sept 2015, p.78]

It is a definite step forward compared to Star Hammer Tactics, but there is so much stuff to add, like, for example, multiplayer and a global map with a strategic mode or a story campaign.

Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy is a fun and deep space tactical experienced marred by a not-so-interesting campaign, lack of personality and an old-style look.

This game might be limited, but does feel like a thorough tactical sim. The space fights do not bore, and the campaign is nice and long.

Star Hammer’s combat systems are truly exceptional, but they’re trapped in a bland, forgettable campaign.

It’s a game for the patient, as you’ll be spending a lot of time paused and micromanaging.

The ideas are sound, and the gameplay sometimes shine, but it still lacks personality and care for details.

Turn based strategy in space worthy of the most seasoned stellar commanders, although there's not a lot more to do besides the battles.

Although the battles are fun, the story is boring and the lack of multiplayer is unacceptable.

You can feel the potential. But in the end it gets boring since the ships abilities allow only a few tactical options while you fight wave after wave.

Star Hammer has all the good components of a comprehensive and entertaining strategy, but its design is totally unsuitable for the overwhelming majority of missions, that appear later in the game. Hand in hand with bugs the originally entertaining small fleet commanding turns to unplayable piece.

It is a WEGO system in that you plan your move, deploy specials like anti-missiles and drones and then let it play out till the next turn. However there are some glaring flaws. Only one ship of each type have special weapons, for example the corvette is the missile ship while your frigate has the counter measures for incoming missiles. The problem is that you have to fire your counter measures and they have to travel to protect from incoming, so good luck protecting your fighters breaking off the main group to take on enemy fighters. The credits you get for completing a mission is so low it makes it a grind to save up for replacement fighters (you will lose them) or a better ship. Also it takes forever before they introduce better ships so what you start with will be with you for a long time. The story is just a macguffin to keep the missions going. Overall I do like it but wish there were more depth and less grind. Full Review »

Great game, fun and quick to learn. Crew interaction boosts your ship and fleets ability. Needed speech acting not just text, but apart from this a very solid 8 out of 10 and good value for money too.

It is in fact a nice mix of real time and turn based with lots of depth for those who like to micro-manage. There are some nice ship designs (esp. the human factions) and weapons effects. My only complaint is the relatively generic space opera story line. I've sunk a day on this already. Full Review »
