I will rate the game as an toxic fan of SpellForce franchise. It was a bit surprising to see the series will have a different game genre. Game industry has a lot of top variety 4x RTS, RPG and the question is whether this game can compete with them?
When a publisher plans to release a game, they should be asking themselves this question. I do not quite understand THQ Nordic's policy and the quality of their products, on the one hand, they have a lot of rights for different franchises, but it seems that the release of games is accompanied by a conveyor and basically has an average quality of execution and small budget.
For me, as a fan who loves this franchise, this game ranks high and should therefore be of very high quality and prioryty.
From the point of view of the financial component, I understand THQ, but from the point of view of loving games, - no.
Now let's move on to SpellForce Conquest of Eo itself:
It is immediately clear that "Owned by Gravity" thought about interesting gameplay mechanics, - the magic tower, the grimoire, 3 types of archmage to choose from look entertaining.
The presentation of the plot, musical accompaniment, a pleasant interface immediately catches the eye, it is softer and closer to the original SpellForce.
Tactical battles, I’ll say right away that is done quite averagely. Maps have an average elaboration, for example, there is no such thing that enemy units are in intricately developed castles, shelters, which would give them some advantage. In fact, you are met by a flat surface, plains, or, well, an imitation of a settlement, or ruined buildings that are only for the eye.
You will not find deep tactical experince here, for example, like in Divinity Original Sin, Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, Age of Wonders 3. Not to say that it is not interesting at all, but still, people who have played these listed games, will find such battles boring.
Graphics look good. It's certainly not super processed, but overall it looks pleasing to the eye. UI design and icons look good.
Creatures design.
This is where i get embarrassed. Why to drag the design from SpellForce 3?! As someone who has played all parts of SpellForce, it's rather uninteresting for me to meet the same creatures in the new game.
New people who have played this game firstly will go to SpellForce 3 and meet the same creatures there. Hmm, what they will say? Also it is strange to watch when wasps guard a unique location. Guys are you serious, really?
Again, someone will like it, fight wasps, but still, this does not fit into the logic. Also strange is the moment when the army of goblins interact with human settlements. There is some kind of broken logic.
Regarding RPGs, there is no powerful customization, in-depth developed development mechanics, and so on. It's more about 4x RTS.
Understand me correctly, if I were in the place of the publisher and set priorities, let's say - such a game would have little budget, another game would have an average budget - then I would have no questions, but when you are a fan of the series, naturally your requirements are too high, your game should come first.
I still hope that the policy regarding this franchise will be revised by THQ, and it will not be bombarded with average quality projects.
My score of 6 is largely given to the publisher because I'm sure if the any developers had other priorities they could make a more unique game.
And to all ill-wishers, moderators, blockers, I want to wish one thing - to listen.
