Song of the Deep

A beautiful adventure under water, with a touching narrative, immersing the player in a dreamy fairytale Metroidvania.

If you like Metroidvania games and the Child of Light/Ori and the Blind Forest atmospheres, Song of the Deep’s gonna give you a lot of satisfaction.

If you are thirsty for an interesting Metroidvania game, Song of the Deep is a good choice, which will keep you busy for at least seven to eight hours. It does not fit to the "elite" category, but it is a fair proposal, undoubtedly worth the asking price.

Song of the Deep is a good metroidvania with an excellent artistic sector and a nice plot, but the simplified combat system and some decontextualized puzzles affect the value.

Enchanting and charming, Song of the Deep is a children’s-fairy-tale-turned-video-game that’s full of wonder and vibrant beauty. The gameplay is both solid and enjoyable, but not without hiccups and hindrances.

A lot of melancholy and poetry swims below the sea surface. You can watch it from the window of the submarine in the arcade with a non-linear design, charming graphics and a distinctive atmosphere. Fabulous Song of the Deep, however, could avoid the breakneck controls and frustrating puzzles.

At first I was charmed, but Song of the Deep failed to rise to my initial expectations, because apart from an unusual setting and delightful fairy tale atmosphere it lacks something that would make it memorable. [10/2016, p.50]

Song of the Deep is an action-adventure metroidvania that doesn’t go deep in the gameplay mechanics, but indeed goes deep in the journey underneath the sea.

Song of the Deep is a very pleasant but mostly unoriginal game. It's pretty but not as much as Ori and the Blind Forest, the weapons are cool but not as inventive as in other games of the same studio. Still - this underwater adventure is worth your time but it could use some polishing.

Song of the Deep is gorgeous and has some creative ideas, but lacks the polish to make it a must-play.

As heroine dives deeper, she keeps seeing new undersea wonders. Too bad that many paths are blocked off by various hazards – but for every hazard there is a mean to bypass it, and crab will happily sell Marin necessary upgrades for coins she finds. It’s worth mentioning that there is no predetermined order to this – you can choose which new abilities you want right away, and which can wait their turn. [Issue#212, p.62]
