AWESOME! The only thing that lets me down is DRIVING. Physics is awful, but all the other things like FIGHTS, story, rainy Hong Kong, variety of missions, great design, where all skills ore useful and really make you walk through mission, and clothing not only looks good but raises your stats.. All those things are truly awesomely made! Great job guys!

Sleeping dogs essentially takes a lot of fun games and mixes them up. The driving is very similar to Need For Speed where you drive around to a certain check point and accept challenges. If you ever played one of the most underrated brawler of all time "The Warriors", you'll get the experience it here. The shooting is similar to max payne where you take cover and have cool slow motion animations. The negative reviews here sounds like it's written by people who should go work for Activision because not one of them are able to come up with a solution that would make it more fun. Criticisms like it's lacking "wow factor" is a joke because nobody really knows that means. Rather than saying what would make the game fun, it simply needs this mysterious factor. The first time you wrap a rope around a thug's neck and hang him to death, you will be pleased. Right in the tutorial, you will smile as you slam a door down a guy's face. Another issue people wrote is that it's buggy, it's actually a lot less buggy than the older true crime series when they were released under Activision. Right now I am playing on patch 1.4 and I haven't notice any game breaking bugs. The hotkeys for the PC isn't that bad, there was one annoying button such as H for honking but I just remapped it to F. If you can't handle wasd and a mouse than maybe you shouldn't play PC games. Most of the controls were very similar to many popular games and you have to be able to do basic things like holding shift or hitting F. Worst case senario, buy a controller. The story is definitely intriguing, it's like the movie "The Departed" except you can only see from one point of view. Overall, a top quality game like this is dying out because companies like Activision are runned by people who only cares about money and don't even know what a fun game is(The current CEO described games as selling Tide laundry detergeant, just rebrand the exact same thing and call it call of duty 5). The camera, the aiming and the terrible lipsync is mostly what kept me away from the game.
The camera doesn't listen to you. Sometimes it rotates too fast, sometimes it rotates too slow - I have no idea how I have such a problem.
The aiming (with weapons) in this game is also extremely buggy - sometimes the reticle will get stuck and you won't be able to shoot whatsoever, sometimes you get locked away from the controls because of sticky keys (it seems to be an in-game problem, I have sticky keys completely disabled).
The lipsyncing is decent on cutscenes, but when it comes to lipsyncing during in-game action sequences, it's terrible. If you sing karaoke, your lips will move incoherently, if you talk to someone while walking next to each other your mouth will just move like you're playing pretend-talk.
The fighting system in this game is really fun, but the control glitches make it less fun, for some even unplayable.
The UI is god-awfully large and will annoy the living heck out of you.
I don't know if it's my hardware (it's not, this is the only game with such problems), or the devs, but the game is already in version 1.4 and all of these problems haven't been attended to.
Maybe, someday, the game will be finally fixed and I'll be able to play.
It's a great game at heart, while it did have a predictable story, it's fun. And that's what matters.

I have lots of issues with crashes on load, and crashes midgame. LA Noire meets Grand Theft Auto. Music is dull gangsta rap only. Gameplay gets a bit repetitive just like LA Noire. You can tell it was made for console by the way the controls "work". Camera angles and control of camera are also quite irritating.
If they could make it more stable this would be a nice sandbox game.

The camera constantly plays tug of war with you, forcing your mouse all the way off to the side as you attempt to emulate a thumbstick gently but continuously guiding direction. You obviously are not meant to use a mouse and keyboard. The keys are not all remappable and the defaults have been mapped out into horrible places requiring a foot-long hand-span to push certain combinations, not to mention several other symptoms of consolitis such as 'multipurpose' buttons, checkpoint system, ridiculous difference in camera-control sensitivity between walking and driving, nonsensical invisible walls. The gameplay and graphics are showing the age of its True Crime: Hong Kong origins. It's a decent enough game, but if you have the choice, pick the console it was clearly designed around. Unlike a good fighting game or beat-em-up, the hand-to-hand is both crude & abstract, leaving you feeling disconnected from your character and his actions. The arcadey driving is pointlessly easy as all vehicles from motorcycles to lorries feel the same- zippy, tight-turning, with few penalties for errors. Navigating around obstacles (inc. other traffic) is not a challenge.

The story is boring enough to not merit discussion.

Curiously for a game with several standing collection quests, the world is technically well-created but lacks character & exudes a sense of artifice. Alive but vegetative. Exploring it is unrewarding even with the forced gameplay perks.

On the plus side the PC version is well-optimized. Downside: the controls are awkward, even when you plug in a gamepad. The field of view is tight and not configurable.

By the way, from the misplaced glowing praise- having been a PC gamer all my life- and similar writing styles & rhetoric, I suspect many of the reviews here are of dubious provenance.

It's glitchy, and most of the time if you play with the sandbox environment you find all sorts of ways to ruin the game. A few examples I can come up with from playing is: Alt+Tabbing screwed up my subtitles and sound, getting hit by a taxi while holding the right mouse button makes it so you can't perform any non-combat right button moves, rag-doll launched me into space and dropped me into the pixelated ground (I took pictures) at which my view became that of a god damn NPC that was riding a van, my cellphone got glitched and I couldnt put it away, etc etc. Once again, this is in NO WAY a BAD game. It IS very detailed. I love the sandbox, I loved the huge selection of half-assed romance missions and drug-busts. I also love how even though you're essentially a bad-ass Triad, you never seem to be able to get your hands on a firearm or even call your foot-soldiers to battle like in Saints Row. The real saving grace of this game is the graphic, except when it rains. Then everything looks like a FOB smeared hair-gel on it. The city looks lived-in, the store-fronts have clever illusions to simulate being a 3-d space with actual inventory the civilians respond correctly to being bumped...or witnessing violence etc. Good voice acting and well paced. At low speeds the mouse-tracking is all over the place but once you get your view-angle correct for the vehicle and speed you are driving it is pretty fun to boot around. Unlike GTA I did actually care about the plot and the characters. GTA felt cartoonish and one-dimensional with a series of stupid unrelated missions to do. While it looks pretty, Sleeping Dogs manages to make Hong Kong, a place with a population density of nearly 16k people per square mile, feel almost dead, and every time I had to drive on that under construction highway or the twisty mountain road I died a little inside. The martial arts/environmental fighting aspect of Sleeping Dogs is interesting, but eventually becomes a little thin. I should also mention that I ran into a lot of bugs. Bottom line, there's a great setting and premise here, but it's hindered by execution. Only pick this up if you need to play every GTA clone out there, or can get it on sale. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It isn't too often a game has me wan't to play from start to finish in one sitting. This game was a huge surprise considering it's fast-paced release. The overall atmosphere, Triad 80's flick-style fighting, mixed with a "The Departed" twist has me loving EVERY single thing about this game. Yes, a few bugs need to be ironed out, but Square really made a masterpiece. Expand

I agree that the camera motion and panning needs more responsiveness, and there are some bugs that at times make you want to punch the screen - like the time I'm in the sewer and having guys with machine guns spawning two feet away from me. But what a job they've done on re-creating a virtual chinese city, it's really quite stunning. Driving works well (and is almost a bit like Driver when you're trying to lose the cops) and combat is a steep learning curve, but ultimately a solid effort. Gunplay is a bit difficult at times, and takes a bit of getting used to, but still you can have some fairly fun gun battles. There's clearly a good storyline and sense of humour - like accidentally running someone over and watching a girl take pictures on her mobilephone. Side-missions are fun, not too sure about the races or the gambling, and the drug busts are a little bit repetitive, but do add extra reasons to go and explore. Really glad this game was made, hope there's some good DLC coming, and/or sequel in the works please. Expand

This is my favourite of the GTA-style sandbox games. The main reason is the very estute move of (almost) replicating the superb fighting mechanics from the recent Batman games. As a result, hand to hand combat is very satisfying. The departure from a US environment is also very refreshing.

S.Dogs offers you the option of choosing your allegiance but it influences nothing apart from the acquisition of certain skills. Side activities like dates and karaoke aren't too engaging and although the dates (and using massage parlors) strongly imply you having sex with the girls, nothing is shown. Brave this game is not.

DLC costumes, guns and vehicles are sort of a gimmick. All the missions are done in vehicles provided to you and carrying any kind of gun outside of your apartment makes you a police target immediately. And the game is full of "chase this guy on foot for five minutes and then take him down in melee" sequences where shooting the guy fails the mission. Smart this game is not.

What's left is an extremely dragged out and watered down Hong Kong action movie broken into small parts hidden among a bleak GTA clone.

No por eso deja de ser una opción más que interesante y una apuesta al entretenimiento en forma de violencia y suspenso. You can throw a enemy into a giant oven and watch him burn, toss him into a phone booth and beat him with the phone until his face is all bloody, stick his head into a rooftop AC fan for a bloody explosion, or anything else. The bad: like any other port disappointing in this regard with various crashes and bugs particularly for nVidia card users, the story (run-of-the-mill undercover cop story, BUT one which does offer a number of interesting moments), camera movement, missions can become somewhat tedious and repetitive at one point, car chases missions involve the same thing over and over again: shoot the tires of the pursuers or pursuees (if that is even) which spawn in throngs out of thin air in the middle of the road, nonexistent weapon management (yes I understand that the game focuses on hand-to-hand but a persistent handgun would have been great and only natural considering the character's line of work) , on ultra while driving at high speed the game seems to stutter slightly but without a drop in FPS which holds steady at around 50 (running it on an i7 3770k, GeForce GTX 670 OC, 16 Gb RAM) which is mildly annoying but not game-breaking. It is a game with perhaps more flaws than I would have liked, but still a great game nonetheless. If you liked GTA IV you should definitely pick this up! Expand

The gameplay is slick and polished, combining arcade style driving with addictive KungFu combos and explosive action gunfight sequences (which are not EVERYWHERE, as guns pop up only occasionally, and with robust melee game play, you will never miss them).

Square Enix has done an outstanding job on the scripting, voice acting and story. This game will grab your attention with its polished gameplay, and keep you riveted to your seat with its story. The voice acting is sublime, with genuine Cantonese where appropriate - not once will you wince at cliche voice overs. The player character Wei Shen is not a paper cutout protagonist, and you will feel the emotional pressure of being an narc in the Triad. The game does this not with obvious game play elements such as dialogue choices, but with subtle and excellent story telling, and conversation cues, and literary foreshadowing. The gentle push and pull between avenging your past, doing your duty, being the general good-guy, and your new found loyalty to your likable Triad family is present the whole way - the story constantly upping the ante.

The flavor of Hong Kong is sloshed all over the game world, everything from the pedestrians casual jabs at mainland Chinese, to the blinking traffic light sounds. The world is incredibly realistic, and very diverse. Square Enix has done a terrific job of capturing Hong Kong's urban landscape in digital form. Everything from roadside basketball courts, to city centre green spaces, the game looks and feels like you are actually wandering around as a tourist in one of the most interesting cities in the world.

All of this serves to keep you hooked until the games intense and satisfying conclusion, and you will immediately ask yourself 'when is the first DLC coming out?!'

The negatives in this game is hand to hand combat is kind of limited and does not lend well to keyboard/mouse but to be frank who needs to fight when you can get into a car and drive over those thugs in the street anyhow? The other draw back is gun combat is a bit clunky as well. There were a few bugs from time to time such as not buying food from a vendor despite pressing to do so but they were pretty minor and in some cases amusing and did not stop the missions from happening.
Happily the positives abound and the game is fun, there are various sub missions to do in addition to the main story line and it is a focused entertaining plot. For the O.C.D there are hidden statues and lock boxes to be found, as well as clothing. An experience system for Triad and Cop help give you new combat abilities but the plot is fairly linear but to be frank it is entertaining getting to it. Fast cars, street racing, back alley fist fights, cop missions and criminal heist missions and a sense of humour make this game an entertaining Hong Kong action theater. There's even Karaoke to do!

Fighting mechanic in this game is unprecedented from other open world games right now. Definitely needs more 'moves' to keep it fresh, other than spamming the same keys throughout the game.

Customisation seems a bit too bland and simple, there is little diversity for the character to change between clothes, or for example, car and car paints. Something could be added to it, making it better.

Not to mention, looks of the entire city looks realistic in comparison with today's Hong Kong. Its definitely not one-hundred percent accurate, but believable.

Lastly, the visuals of the game is really great. For example, you can see real lighting, ambient occlusion effect on the wet floors in the game.

I usually don’t buy AAA title the year they are released because the price is usually too high. But when Steam accidentally offered Sleeping Dogs at a 91% discount during their Christmas sale, I decided to go for it.

The game takes place in a fictional modern day Hong Kong with players assuming control of Wei Shen, an officer of the San Francisco Police Department, who had been seconded to the Hong Kong Police Force. Wei has been assigned by the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau to go undercover and infiltrate the Triad society called Sun On Yee and take them down. There are two subplots contained within the main storyline: the first is Wei’s personal struggle between completing his mission as a police officer, and having to commit crimes to prove his worth to the triad. The other subplot consists of completing missions set out by a triad lieutenant, such as killing triad members who are loyal to competing lieutenants. The island is divided into four fictional districts which are named after real areas.

Hong Kong is a fantastic backdrop for this game. It’s huge, but not too huge and you’ll soon start to recognize parts of the city and find your way around without using the GPS too much. The GPS works brilliantly, by the way. The city looks beautiful in the sunset, and if you’ve never been to Hong Kong yourself, I recommend that you drive to Victoria Peak in the game and have a look at the city in all its glory. The developers have made sure to build a digital version of Hong Kong that resembles the real thing. I’ve been there twice in real life, and recognize the Soho area and the escalators from Central. There is attention to detail everywhere; Soho is flooded with Gweilo; foreign devils.

While similar titles, like Grand Theft Auto and Saint’s Row, are focused on gun combat, Sleeping Dogs is mostly about personal melee and boot-in-face combat. You do get access to firearms now and then, but only to a single weapon at the time and you’ll usually not use the gun outside of a mission. When levelling up, you’ll get access to new marshal arts actions that can be used to take out your enemies in all kinds of imaginative ways. Trying to perform these new actions with the keyboard, however, feels really awkward. You should definitely play this game with a Xbox 360 controller or some other game pad. With a game pad, controlling Wei, both in combat and in a vehicle, feels so much smoother than with the keyboard. I’m guessing the analogue sticks help a lot.

There are very few things wrong with Sleeping Dogs. There are the occasional bug, though, like the heads of people sticking out of cars roofs and the camera some times have a hard time following Wei. Every now and then he disappears off screen completely, which can be a tad annoying in the middle of combat. At one point I also managed to crash Wei’s so that he was thrown out of the vehicle and got stuck inside a large cage there was no way he could get out of. The only solution was to cancel the current mission and start again.

But all in all, Sleeping Dogs is a great open world game. It plays great, it looks great (even on my three year old system on medium settings) and it sounds great (there’s a wide range of radio stations and some of the cars sound and handle absolutely beautifully). With the release of GTA V this year, it’s quite possible that Sleeping Dogs will be quickly forgotten, but that’s a faith it doesn’t deserve. It’s one of the best games of its genre.

Some little bugs, but besides that a pretty good game. Feels more realistic than GTA4. The driving is kind of bad imo but combat is really fun. Story wise I'd say its way better than GTA. All in all I got this game for like 4 bucks on steam and absolutely worth it. Great game.

I am quite disappointed with the game. The story is waaaaaayyy too predictable and a bit too boring. The fighting is fun but the AIs are a bit too sluggish. Biggest falure:vehicle maneuver.Seems that the driving part was not tested sufficiently. When we want to just shift slightly for a better forward direction and are holding the backward button, the camera changes into a strange and useless side view, with the most important sraight forward or backward view blocked.
    Too much collectables.

Probably the easiest game i ever played which is really bad. The Third and last bad thing for me is the glitches and the bugs... i got to restart the game once, because i got stuck in a tree and i couldn't get out... I had to begin 3 missions behind. Anyhow im not done with the good things on this game, THE OPEN WORLD IS AMAZINGLY AWESOME, The Number of how many things you can do in the open world is HUGE, It's really hard to get everything in the game and explore all the world in my opinion, The Game has NOTHING stupid and not realistic in it, The Backstory is Amazing, the Mini Games on this game are the Mind Blowing and There is no game on earth of this type that is that good and realistic as this one, Grand Theft Auto was never that realistic the gameplay was NEVER that good, Saints row was always worse because of the huge number of non realistic things in saints row, and now the saints row IV RUINED everything... This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As we know there are two types of games in the world. Ones that you stop playing because they are complete and then there are the ones that we should have stopped playing 4 hours ago because you have work in two hours. Sleeping dogs falls into the later category.

The game has issues for sure, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a "gta clone" though. There are a lot of similarities like if you crash into something you come flying out of the windshield. What they shouldn't have copied are the crappy police.

Lets look at the mechanics behind the game.
In game I had to re learn the typical control structure. Space Bar to run rather than shift, Backspace in place of escape. These are little things but they are so damn annoying. Even in the pause menu you can use escape so why not in-game?
Driving can be a terrible idea, If you have a car I would suggest that over any vehicle. Motorbikes are....****. With a map that size at least make the driving appealing. Its cool you can press spacebar and w with a direction key to spin your car around but the driving, taking corners is very shonky.
Combat feels rather lazy. So far I have only played 3.9 hours but I have found I can counter anything. The only time I have died is when I walked in front of a bus while kicking some dudes ass.

    The story
I like the idea or concept, the story feels better than GTA IV's. Again I have only played 3.9 hours so I haven't gone to far into the story. But being a character that's obviously grown up with the people that are now running the city and the ways of how things are being done. Then mixing in that you are an under cover cop kinda leaves two option. You get found out or you betray the law. This is a small field to work with.

What I like about Sleeping Dogs are the possibilities, the missions, how the first few hours aren't clunky tutorials and I like how I can alt tab and come back in without it getting choppy, there is not fps problems like there are with GTA IV.

    Best game of 2012?
No, one of the good one but not the best

    My recommendation
Get it on the steam summer sale, It's worth a play through

Great game with interesting story and characters.
action is beautifully violent with great combat design.

Some people may have problems with controls in the beginning BUT nothing big enough to get in the way of the experience.

Really deep storyline with great storytelling and great atmosphere of the city of Hong Kong and character development, i wished for more girlfriend interaction in the story but no such luck, it seems to me that the girls were put at the last time to satisfy the people hungry for some romance in the mists of all the grim undercover police drama that the game is.

Taking everything into consideration this game is a 9/10 for me.

The primary function of the game is the martial arts combat which is flawlessly designed and extremely addictive. It takes a lot from the Batman Arkham series, and hints at film legends such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.
There is also a firearms element, which is also very good but does not fit in quite as well as the melee.
Cars and racing are so well designed that this element feels like a true core racing game, and the radio within each car which plays real hits is well received.
The setting, Hong Kong, is beautiful on the eye and feels alive, although I would say that it could be a little bigger and have more buildings to go into.
The story, which is crucial to any game, is very playable and engaging, albeit slightly repetitive at times. This leads me to my biggest gripe; the story length which seems too short for what is otherwise an extremely high quality game.

Truly worth owning for anyone who calls themselves a PC gamer.

A very interesting game that will provide you lots of fun. It mixes amazing martial arts with very good gun fights, its intense and has a good solid story with very good missions. But not all is perfect.

The combat system is amazing, I never played something that felt so good, so simple and so engaging, hand to hand combat is awesome, gun fighting is in the same high quality standards of the best 'open world' games around.
The AI isn't bad at all, probably better than in most games of the genre, but it lacks a choice in difficulty, after a while beating the NPC's becomes very easy but it never stops being fun.
The map is quite good, sometimes it feels like you are in Hong Kong for real, however, the map is quite barren. What I mean is, at start you get a lot of amazing missions but don't expect the 'open world' to be like that, most of the map is just streets, there's no chance for good parkour or anything like that, just in a few areas the map is evolved to that level.
Missions are very well made, but there's just too many car chases, and driving in this game feels like you are playing a 90's racing game.
The 'Open World' feature is a lie. This game is not even close to be an 'open world' game. It lacks everything:
-The map isn't good enough, you only get detailed areas where missions usually take place, most of the map is just streets.
-The activities outside the storyline missions/content is very low on quantity, sometimes on quality and definitely repetitive.
-The NPC spawning is horrible, one of the worst I've seen, for example, if the cops are after you, they won't spawn in the direction you are heading, but if you turn around for 1 second to shoot or look at what's going on, all of a sudden you have NPC cops instantly spawning where you were heading, all of a sudden you are surrounded and being shot at from all sides... just awful game design.
-There's no shops to buy guns or any type of weapon... seriously... you are playing as a triad criminal and you can't get guns unless you steal them from cops?

This is a great game, one of the best I ever played, but don't get fooled by the words 'open world', if you are looking for an 'open world' game, this is not the one you should buy. This game is just a very good criminal/action story that you play with a small city in the background and amazing martial arts mechanics. Since the developers claimed it to be an 'open world' game, they made a lot of publicity about it being so, I feel disappointed, and from a possible 9-10 score I will have to get down to 7-8, and since I had so much fun playing this game I will go with the 8.

Unlike the previous ‘True Crime’ games, where there was a strict depiction of the city maps, Sleeping Dogs does not portray Hong Kong, inch by inch.
