Not as good as TFE and TSE but way better than the mediocre SS3. I feel like SS2 wanted to be more cartoonish and funny and they achieved that. I love the level design and new weapons, this game is really one of a kind. But I can understand why some Serious Sam purists might be angry at it. Still love it. Pickens approves!

Theres so much I can say about this game, but I will try to only mention the important parts that will help you decide if its your kind of game.
I already mentioned in my TSE review that Serious Sam is all about developing your own tactics against different types of enemies, then the game throws at you those enemies in really different ways testing your tactics and skill, different enemies in different numbers mixed in different ways with each other, placed in different ways on different maps, and if you don't take it in a more tactical way the games might get too chaotic at times, but if you're in the mood that can also be a good thing, just running around killing everyone, that feels great if you are in the mood for that. Also, one of the best soundtracks, and I listen to lots of soundtracks!

But heres where the problems with Serious Sam II start: The difficulty isn't as balanced as it was in the previous games, at some points the waves of enemies seem way too long and the action becomes more tedious, but the worst part is that shooting enemies and blowing **** up doesn't feel as satisfying as it does in the other games.
Some guns feel weak, the explosions also lame, enemies sink into the ground as soon as they die, blood is replaced by some weird smoke that disappears soon and its not ever red for many enemies, somehow I still enjoy this game but it can't compare to the feeling the other Serious Sam games, both older and newer ones, can give you.
The level design is also not that great, sometimes too linear and sometimes feel empty, people who like exploration would enjoy the other games more. And the worst part is probably the least important part, the silliness. Both the look of the game, the jokes and the story went too far with this silly cartoony style. I love how much more colorful the game is compared to half the games in the franchise, but making it cartoony is probably part of why the shooting isn't as fun, the story is garbage and the jokes are sometimes too childish.
Theres smaller problems, like one short platforming part later in the game or the point where they throw lots of zombies with shotguns at you followed by Kamikazes in a tiny room earlier, but Ill just end this with saying, this game has lots of problems and definitely cannot in any way compare to The Second Encounter, so there are better alternatives.

So why do I still love this game? I'm not sure. Maybe its a little bias, since thats one of the first games I've completed, my first shooter and first Serious Sam game, maybe because it has more bosses and variation then the other games and a bunch of cool ideas, even if half of that is **** maybe because the soundtrack is still really awesome, or just because its still, with all its flaws, a Serious Sam game at its core, and while being the most flawed of them, it is still a really fun Serious Sam game and it wants you to have fun with it.
You can have fun with it, if you're in the right mood and don't have any high expectations from it.

I got this game after having played First Encounter, Second Encounter, and then Serious Sam 3 BFE in that order. I'd watched youtube videos of gameplay and my first impression was that it looked silly, stupid and easy, and wasn't worth my time. But then there was a steam sale and I picked it up for 3.5 bucks and thought: what the hell, I wouldn't be a true fan unless I'd played every game. The result startled me. I found this game really fun, and very true to the Serious Sam formula with a few additions. The game looks great, almost as good as HD, but what it lacked in the minor graphics department it made up in design and color. There's twice the variety of enemies in SS2 vs other titles, and also many more locations which keeps things interesting and fresh. The difficulty is what you'd expect from a Serious Sam game, however it is a touch easier, so I recommend bumping up the difficulty one more notch than what you are used to. There's a life system, which i assume is left over from consoles, but ignore it and use the traditional quick save and quick load feature that the PC version has. The jokes are very hit and miss. Some are laughable, and some don't even make sense. Yes the game is very silly if you watch the cutscenes, and a lot of the enemies have silly designs like clowns, footballers and witches, but these are very easy to look past if you want to, or you could embrace and enjoy the silliness, but you quickly forget it anyway when being attacked by 50 units at once. The levels are shorter, approx 25mins per level as opposed to the hour long grinds of the originals, but there's also a lot more of them and in total the single player campaign is a few hours longer than originals. The levels are also smaller, with less space to run, and there's a lack of those iconic vast battlefields, however this is balanced by your character running slower than in the original games. Wrapping things up, Serious Sam 2 is an underrated and unappreciated classic that is very much worthy of the franchise and should be played by all those that loves things Serious Sam. It's louder, it's more colorful, it's sillier, but it still packs plenty of punch and kicks your ass. Go play now,k? Expand

Sam II's wild, random charm makes for a twisted Duke Nukem meets Alice in Wonderland sort of roller coaster ride-a perfect change of pace from the scads of grim 'n' gritty shooters steeped in WWII war zones and dystopian postapocalyptic futures. Just don't take it too seriously, OK?

I was skeptical going into Serious Sam 2, being aware of its design and all, but despite that skepticism, the game was actually a pleasant surprise. The game plays out just like Serious Sam, and Croteam jam-packed it with lots of story to get you more intimate with the characters and world instead of just leaving it as your typical arena shooter.

SS2 introduces new weapons, dozens of new enemies, and also mounted weapons and vehicles to breath new life into the series. You can also pick up objects to elevate yourself to new heights. Although SS2 is different than its prequels, it still provides comedy and amusement in its own way. There are a lot of corny jokes to give you a nice chuckle as you play, and the incredible number of maps are all wacky and original.

Sadly, the secrets are too straightforward (no more hugwalls, goofy locations, secret triggers, etc), and there are little to no jump scares from monsters that suddenly pop out. Rocket jumping was removed as well, and invisible walls were added to prevent you from exploring off-map. This somewhat takes away from the original SS experience, but they're optional anyway so I won't put it against Croteam for making this change.

It didn't take me long to get a positive opinion of the game. It's a fresh take on Sam's adventures which I regret not giving a chance to experience in the past. The map design is simply something you cannot ignore. I played the game on Serious difficulty, and my only complaint is that the second last fight on the final map was just masochistically hard. That portion of the map was definitely not balanced properly.

In any case, you may be put off by the cheesiness of SS2, but I insist that you give it a try if you are a true Serious Sam fan. It might not be as great as its prequels, but it is still a very enjoyable ride. It only costs as much as a cup of coffee whenever it goes on sale.

С другой стороны весёлый геймплей, ниже среднего шутки (для меня). Сюжет классический для серии.

The best co-op fun! Nice graphics, humorous plot, although there is very little of it. A bunch of interesting funny Easter eggs+cool design of weapons and monsters from 1 part of Sam. It's fun to play the game alone, but in a co-op with friends - well, just gorgeous, and you can play in a co-op of up to 16 people! "Launch the Cockerel", "Bulya", "Space Shreks", examples of nicknames you can think of for creatures in the game) ) At the final level, a fairly epic battle. The game has no drawnbacks. If someone completes the game as a child, then it will be one of his favorite childhood games, I replayed the game with friends at 22 and did not change my mind.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The long-expected sequel to Serious Sam the Second Encounter.

Serious Sam 2 is amazing. It feels completely different from the previous two installments but at the same time, nothing changed in terms of gameplay, story, and mechanics.

To start off, the graphics and sprites in this game look totally different from the earlier games but are stunning, colourful and polished. It blew my mind when first playing it as a kid. The new weapon models and detailed environments are just impressive. Because the later Serious Sam games did get back to their original roots, the graphical theme of this game feels unique and I kind of wished they would continue with this style. The game feels like an outcast in the series because of its graphics.

The music is also a big surprise. The first games featured mostly metal tracks from the Croatian band Undercode, which was totally fine and enjoyable for me as a metal fan. The music in Serious Sam 2 however, features many different kinds of ambient music and fight tracks which adapt themselves to the specific worlds you are playing in. The tracks from Greendale and Siriusopolis Uptown remain my personal favorite. The sound effects on the other hand, are a little weak. They feel unfitting for the action in this game.

Speaking about worlds, Serious Sam 2 offers five different themed worlds that you are traveling to in order, to find the missing pieces of a destroyed amulet to make your arch enemy Mental vulnerable. You get teleported in by some magic nerds, ripped straight from Star Trek, and they tell you to go look for them, make the amulet whole and destroy Mental on the sixth and final world, Siriustown. Each world has a boss that you destroy to collect the amulet piece. In the end, you fight the big, freaking building, the Mental Institute that houses Mental.

What makes the game so incredibly good to me, is the humor that the developers implemented into the game. Netricsa and Sam talk a lot, make jokes and references to other games and movies all the time and the extensive use of the Gnaar enemy from the first game in the many hilarious cut-scenes, in which he is a NPC that always nags or bothers you is just epic. The first line in the game refers to a bigger game budget, and this is the reason that Netricsa, your silent AI information companion can talk now.

The enemy models are also hilarious and are almost all completely new. Only four enemies from the previous games make an appearance in Serious Sam 2, and even then, they are completely mutilated into something silly and became a joke of their former self. Just imagine fighting a pair of robot legs with a T-Rex head that has a cigar in its mouth, a witch on a broom, a murderous toy rhino with a spinning key on its back or a zombie, complete in a smoking with a tie and a big, fat shotgun.

Serious Sam 2 features a lot of hidden Easter eggs and secrets and every one of them is worth it for a quick laugh. But the best secret joke of all, is the hidden Duke Nukem skeleton, hanging from a tree with sunglasses on and a big, fat rocket in his ass. Then Sam speaks the phrase “Blondie, is that you? I was waiting FOREVER for you to show up”, a nice backstab to the development of the game Duke Nukem Forever that, at the time, was still not released yet and was the biggest competition for Serious Sam.

The game is of course, is just as hard as the other ones, but for a diehard Serious Sam fan, such as myself, I destroyed it.

A special note must be made for the cut-scenes at the start and finish of each level. It is just so funny and well-made that I never skipped any of them when playing. The game does not take itself seriously and it shows in every clip.

The added vehicles made the game also a lot of fun, although, they are sometimes very buggy.

Croteam really outdid themselves with this game and the love and effort they put into Serious Sam 2 is legendary. My deepest respect to this small, cute little studio from Croatia.

I had so much fun playing this game, when I still used the physical disc, and my first time playing, all I could feel was pure, legit joy that did not change over the years.

Still recommend this game to everyone.

Thank you, Serious Sam 2, for your participation in my childhood.

  1. I had almost forgotten how much fun I had playing the original Serious Sam, but it only took one level full of laughter and insane action to quickly remember why Sam is still the best FPS game in its class since the original Doom.
