    The main game alone is more than worth the budget price, but there's also a series of challenge levels and a New Game Plus option that allows players to go back and find all the secrets they missed the first time around.

    Easily the most insane and downright fun 2D shooter I've played all year, if not ever. And yes, I did say Vuvuzela sandwich creatures with forks for legs.

    Few shooters exist nowadays to simply play on a gamer's need for visceral entertainment, and Double D proves that there's still a market for mid-school (which would be where I would place gaming in the 90's) shooters, regardless of dimension.

    Serious Sam Double D isn't for everyone, but those looking to blow off a little steam at a bargain price ($8 USD) won't be disappointed. Go ahead. Check your brain at the door, kick back, relax and enjoy a little carnage. It's worth it. Seriously.

    Serious Sam: Double D is an amazing feat for an indie game. It has quite a few nooks and crannies for you to explore, challenges for you to conquer after the game is finished, and nonstop action throughout the game.

    Mommy's Best Games successfully translates Serious Sam's gameplay into the second dimension with Serious Sam Double D. As a retro but faithful take on the classic series this game is a must-buy for Serious Sam fans, and at only $8 it's a great deal for anyone looking for a solid old-school action game.

    Monotony complaints aside, Serious Sam Double D's wacky world, crazy weapons, oddball humor and entertaining environments will keep you chuckin' and duckin' through time with Sam. Well, at least until the shine wears off.

    It especially tickled my fancy with its irreverent, unrestrained humor that rivals Earthworm Jim. If you're expecting innovation or extremely tight gameplay, this isn't the place to find it. On the other hand, if you enjoy simple action games, quirky indie experiences, or senses of humor that we seem to have left in the 90s, don't let Double D slip by.

    While Double D's one-tone puerility won't appeal to everyone, the game does offer a refreshingly in-your-face scale of violence that will endear it to long-term Serious Sam fans. If you fancy a 2D action fix to help you wile away the hours until Serious Sam 3 arrives, then look no further.

    Serious Sam perfectly fits in the run'n'gun genre and the weapons connection system is great, but the game is way too short. Action is generally good, with a nice atmosphere, even though some enemies are not so cool.

    Double D isn't the most tightly produced of shooters, but it's a laugh. With genuinely amusing, self-deprecating humor peppered throughout, and increasingly ridiculous opponents to tackle, Mommy's Best Games has produced something that is sure to entertain, even if it doesn't inspire.

    Serious Sam: Double D is an old school game that revives the genre of side-scrolling shooter. Mommy's Best Games is working hard, but the hilarious situations and the nice graphics are not enough for a game much too short and without any innovation.

    The fans of the Serious Sam saga can take into account an easy (and cheap) buy, because the feeling of the 3D versions of the game has been transposed into Double D well.

    If you have an itch for straight-up no-frills blasting action, then Serious Sam: Double D will certainly give it a good scratch, but despite the challenge modes and the golden guns that bulk out the package, it's doubtful you'll be coming back. There are some good lines, and a few neat ideas, but ultimately it's mindless shooting and aspires to be no more. In that, it is a success.

    For a budget PC title, you'll get a good hour of entertainment out of the gun stacker's novelty and likely a few chuckles out of the dialogue and enemies. But what could have been either a really clever parody or a tight side-scrolling shooter is unfortunately neither.

    But enthusiasm alone can't cure fatal problems with the flat, tedious gameplay; and while almost everything about Serious Sam Double D sounds and looks fun, it is barely any fun to play at all.

    The last time I saw such a bad game was... damn, I don't even remember when it was. It's boring, ugly, suffers of bad programming and violates your ears with abysmal music. [October, p.80]

You have Lava monsters jumping on Pogo Sticks, and stacks of Pancakes with Trumpets and forks for legs....and anything else you haven't imagined. It's quite simply...fun. Lots of enemies, killing all around, and just plain chaotic at most times.
    Games have always been about one thing: Being fun. That's exactly what this game is. The graphics aren't exactly impressive, but when you consider the insane amounts of fun...who cares? The game is a BLAST, quite literally. It's fun making combinations of guns to mow down your enemies, and really is just what Serious Sam has always been about, hordes of enemies, and plain old fashioned fun slaughtering all of them. That's exactly what you get here. It's not trying to be the new big thing, it's trying to be what games have forgotten about being...fun.    … Full Review »

    Serious Sam Double D (XXL) is a fun little game and parody to give you a break from all the remasters and remakes of the original games. It’s a short side scrolling indie game, taking place after the events of the First Encounter and Second encounter. It is one of the many “bonus games” like Serious Sam: The Random Encounter and Serious Sam Classics: Revolution.

    Story wise, the game has not much to offer. It is the same story as the other games, fight the hordes of Mental and save the universe. Classic stuff.

    In terms of graphics, the original version did not offer anything special. The XXL version of the game polished the graphics and effects somewhat but for a game this simple, it is not that big of a deal.

    The sounds and music are quite nice. They use battle music from the original games, as well as some new tracks. It gives the game its Serious Sam atmosphere.

    I like the gun stacking mechanic, it makes the game fun and easier when progressing. The search for all the weapons keeps the game going. The secrets in the game are fun and have that distinct Croteam feeling.

    A few things I do not like about Serious Sam Double D (XXL) is the player stat screen. For the unlocking of the golden guns, you need to deal a certain amount of damage with each weapon. To check your progress, you go to the player stats in the menu. But when there, it scrolls every piece of information without you being able to pause it or scroll back.

    Also, the menus are a little bit slow and confusing sometimes. Lastly, the textboxes in the beginning of a level are way to slow. You can set the game speed to Sonic the Hedgehog standards, but the textboxes are still slow as a snail.

    The Challenges in the game are tough and need a few tries but are fun. The only downside is that the game does not offer anything for completing them, other then an achievement ultimately.
