    it's good that people who advocate equality, which I support, do not view the whole nation as a people. change the logo to a swastika.

    The improvements from the launch make the old reviews redundant, this is one of the best games I have played. The fact that a new player and seasoned player have identical equipment means the only difference is player skill.

    Played this game in beta and then when It first release. Back then it was enjoyable, and ive had many memorable moments with my friends, but at that time there was a lack of things to do at all. Fast forward to NOW. I jumped back in in July when it released on steam, and boy, what an improvement, there is so much to do now, so many new things to discover, and adventures to be    SoT in 2020

    Very very buggy. I can deal with most bugs, but one bug completely changed my character's appearance permanently. Support told me that they were looking into a fix, but some googling found that this problem has been reported by players as long as two years ago. They obviously do not intend to fix or rectify it.

    This game has SO MUCH POTENTIAL! Unfortunately, it kinda sucks
    Now I had a lot of fun playing this with my two brothers, but only an hour or so in, I quickly realized that we had already experienced pretty much the entire game. There's just nothing to do. There's no end game... Hell, there's no MID game! It's just quests that have you go dig up a treasure chest, fight some skeletons, or    This game has SO MUCH POTENTIAL! Unfortunately, it kinda sucks
    Now I had a lot of fun playing this with my two brothers, but only an hour or so in, I quickly realized that we had already experienced pretty much the entire game. There's just nothing to do. There's no end game... Hell, there's no MID game! It's just quests that have you go dig up a treasure chest, fight some skeletons, or deliver animals (which is the worst).
    I noticed the "Mysterious Stranger" NPC in the taverns who told me to get to rank 5 in all of the guilds. When I got to 5 they told me to get to 10... I looked it up and turns out that there's no end to it. They just keep telling you to rank up more.

    The things I like about the game
    This is one of the most visually beautiful games I've ever played. The water is gorgeous, the sunsets look amazing, and the stars and northern lights are simply mesmerizing.
    I love the soundtrack and the instruments that you and your friends can play together.
    I really enjoy controlling the ships. It's fun adjusting ropes trying to catch the wind just right in your sails, avoiding rocks, and fighting other ships (when you can find any).

    If it were WAY more fleshed out, it would be a great game. But it just feels so empty. The structure's there, but they need to put the rest of the game on that structure. I absolutely cannot believe Microsoft is selling this for a full $60.    … Expand

    Pirate games are relatively few and far between, so when I first started hearing about Sea of Thieves I was pretty excited; the overall concept sounded amazing, and it was being built by a solid company.

    When it finally released, I picked it up with a couple of friends and set sail to pirate it up - and what we found was a game that, had it been called a beta or pre-release and priced at $20-30, was a beautiful start to a game.

    But it wasn't a beta. It was supposedly a full release game, and cost as much as any other AAA title out there.

    In short, the game suffers from a lack of content. Here's a rundown of what you can do in-game:

    -Get a quest from one of the three factions, sail to one or more islands, and do one of three things: Dig up a chest or chests; cage livestock of the proper 'colors'; or fight a couple of waves of skeletons, kill the captain, and take his skull; then sail back to port and deliver/sell the items
    -Engage in ocean-based PvP battles that are generally limited to firing cannon, ramming, and boarding to fight with the limited melee and pistol moves
    -Find the occasional random chest, skull, or item and take it to the proper faction to sell it
    -Find the occasional "message in a bottle", which will send you on a treasure hunt identical to Hoarders' quests
    -Come across a shipwreck and risk drowning as you collect - you got it! - more stuff to sell
    -Sail to a randomly-spawning "skeleton fort", fight waves of a few different types of skeletons, open the vault, and take the stuff back to sell
    -Earn rep for each of the three factions to unlock slight variations of their quests or 'special' skins for your weapons and clothes
    -Buy purely cosmetic upgrades to your weapons, clothes, and ship
    -Sail off the edge of the map
    -Occasionally get attacked by a kraken that you can kill for an achievement and nothing else

    That's a lot to do, right?1 Not really.

    There are 3 minor variations of fetch quests, random spawns that grant or lead to the same loot you get from fetch quests, forts where you fight a couple of enemy variants to get the same loot you get from the quests, or get ambushed by giant tentacles that you can kill for no tangible purpose. Oh, and PvP (which seems to happen infrequently due to how world instances are populated, and which seems to happen when it's most inconvenient).

    That's the whole experience.

    Even the occasional 'special' chest - like the Chest of Grog, which makes you drunk while you carry it, or the Chest of Sorrows, which cries while you're sailing and will sink your ship if you aren't paying attention - is just a slight variation of the only real non-PvE thing you can do in the game, which is fetch quests and more fetch quests.

    There are no classes or leveling. Each pirate has the same set of skills, which boils down to sailing the ship, doing two types of attacks with a cutlass, and shooting a pistol, blunderbuss, or sniper rifle.

    There are no item upgrades. Everything you grind absurd amounts of gold for is purely cosmetic. You'll look pretty, but that's about it.

    The factions have no stories. They're literally just quest givers with semantically identical quests.

    The thing that bugs me most is that there is no quest persistence. Did you pick up two of the three chickens you need for the Merchants, and then have to log out? That's gone. Quest items don't persist from log-off to log-on. When you log in, you aren't even in the same place you were when you logged off, and you're starting fresh on any quests. Even the "message in a bottle" maps disappear upon log-out.

    As to what the game does well: It's beautiful, especially the rolling waves and storms; the sailing mechanics are delightful and fun (learning to club haul is great); ship-to-ship battles are an invigorating blast; and holding drunken parties aboard ship while playing your squeeze boxes, puking on friends, and launching yourself out of the cannon are interesting if short-lived distractions.

    What the game does, it does solidly (the lack of persistence not withstanding). But it isn't a $60 game, and it isn't a release game. It's an incredibly pretty pre-release or beta, the groundwork for a solid game with another year of work to pump into it a reason to keep playing. I did pretty much everything you can do in about 3 hours (not exaggerating) and then (thankfully) got a refund from Microsoft (whose horrible games store is another story entirely).

    Sea of Thieves is a great concept, but it's only about a quarter of a game right now. Put in a class or leveling system, add some actual item upgrades, and give it some sort of over-arcing story (or at least unique factions per story) that makes it worth ongoing play, and it'll be a game worth a triple A price tag. Until then, it's a rip-off at $60.    … Expand

I don't know if it's the updates or just that the game is better than others let on, but I really find the game to be really rewarding. Falling into the water was absolutely terrifying, but then I looked up, and seeing those waves crashing over head is one of the most surreal experiences I've ever had. The gameplay loop isn't the most rewarding thing ever since everything is cosmetic, but I really enjoy the fact that armor and weapons don't affect gameplay, only strategy and skill (I'm terrible btw). I had a group of friends which I think would make a huge difference. I think, if you like the idea of bonding with your friends while having some of the most surreal experiences in gaming, then I think you should give this another try. I haven't tried everything yet, but I'm comfortable giving this game a high score from the amount I've played. The reason for the missing point, is that the gameplay loop is somewhat shallow.… Expand

    I am so happy I didn't buy this game but instead got a free trial, everything you do in this game is utterly pointless. It would have passed if it were between 0-15$ but paying a full 60$ is just insane. The game does not have any interesting quests and you repeat the same few quests over and over again. You'll spend a lot of the time doing nothing while waiting to reach your objective. IfI am so happy I didn't buy this game but instead got a free trial, everything you do in this game is utterly pointless.     SoT used to be fun for me but now its nothing but trolls who just want to go around killing you for no reward. Really now 4v1 for a fisher who allowed them to search the ship to prove nothing was on board, and their response they wanted blood. PVP should be in PVP area only, with a seperate area for PVE

Playing on any ship but the smallest one, you are simply not able to see ahead of you as you sail, your progress is entirely up to the mercy of the wind, which is somehow ALWAYS in the direct opposite direction of where you are meant to go, slowing your progress to a crawl and making every single trip an annoyance.

    All this plus a terrible UI that's a huge mess that focuses on realism rather than convenience, much to the game's detriment, and you have a game with a ton of potential that unfortunately amounts to nothing more than a couple hours of fun.    … Expand

Global achievement stats show that roughly 80 percent of players don't get toI really want to give this game a higher rating, it's got an immersive atmosphere, emotionally moving soundtrack, gorgeous water graphics, thrilling gameplay and engaging storylines... that are all ruined by the absolute WORST playerbase of any game I have ever played since the dawn of multiplayer online gaming. Global achievement stats show that roughly 80 percent of players don't get to experience any more than 10% of the games content because of the toxic pvp problem this game has that goes constantly ignored by Rare. I have read hundreds of complaints about the toxic pvp yet for some reason Rare continues to cater to the tiniest minority of its most hateful and toxic players both inside AND outside the game, including inviting streamers to be guests at their official events who encourage their viewers to send hateful abusive comments and death threats to people they don't like. I would love to be able to recommend and even buy this game as a gift for friends but until the toxicity and pvp issues are fixed I just can't. It's the most disappointing waste of potential I've ever seen in a game and you shouldn't waste your money.… Expand

I contacted customer support, they said wait 72 hours for rewards to load and get in touch if no coin loaded after that. If it weren't for the MANY glitches, and server issues this would be one of the best games I have ever played. But sadly, the customer service department don't care about your wasted time.     My opinion on Sea of Thieves is extremely mixed. There are definitely things to love about the game, but there are also others that would make me not recommend the game.

    To start with the positive, the game definitely nails the sense of adventure. It is simply a really fun time with friends and just being in the world is fun.     To start with the positive, the game definitely nails the sense of adventure. It is simply a really fun time with friends and just being in the world is fun. There are plenty of different activities to do with friends, the Tall Tale quests being a highlight. (Especially the Pirates of the Caribbean-themed quests, those could be a game on their own.)

    However, the developer insists on the game being always online, which is definitely a deal-breaker for a large majority of people. A pirate game where other people can try to steal your loot sounds nothing but appropriate on paper, but it has the potential to completely fall flat.

    PvP could be a rewarding experience if all parties wanted to battle, but that's simply not the case. Most of the time battles end up being unsatisfying and one-sided, and simply ends up being a waste of time for everyone. It basically devolves into bullying PvE players for the sake of bullying.
    Rare had a solution for this with the arena mode but has since scrapped it due to managing it poorly.

    Unfortunately, the always-online nature of this game has led to another issue: the Sea of Thieves fanbase is one of the most toxic player bases you'll ever find online.
    It is difficult to enjoy an online game filled with people throwing insults and harassment. There are definitely some extremely creative and awesome fans out there, but the sad truth is that they are a few and far between.
    There is an easy solution that would fix the game and maybe even bring back some of the 30 million people who downloaded the game and immediately quit after seeing what the game is like.
    PvE servers - the ability to play the game with friends only.
    Personally I would simply make the online portion of the game free-to-play to increase the amount of players engaging in PvP, and make private games and the Tall Tales exclusive to people who
    actually bought the game.

    This, however, would require Rare to admit that they made a mistake and change the game despite it not being their original vision.
    I fully believe this is the right move to take. Imagine other games if they didn't listen to fan feedback:
    imagine Super Smash Bros but being unable to turn off items because it wasn't the creator's vision that it's a serious fighting game.    … Expand

    It's fun in the beginning for sure, and having a crew of 4 friends can entertain you for a couple of days of playtime, but after doing the same thing over and over, you start to realize there is nothing more.

    The game has basically zero content. It's a sandbox, and it's a barren wasteland of a sandbox.
    - The world is empty. Other than generic skeletons, and the same npcs that give you fetch quests in every port, there is nothing in the entire world other than yourself, and some sharks.

    - The quests are super-generic fetch quests. There are no storyline quests, there is no interaction, and there is no variety.
    After you've done quests for a couple of hours, you've seen all there is to see. For the remainder of your playtime, the quests will now be complete carbon copies.

    - PVP is the only ray of light in this entire experience, but if you're a crew of 1-2, expect to be completely ganked by 4-man crews over and over and over. If you're a 4-man crew, expect to gank smaller ships, which will give you basically nothing, as no one ever carries any treasure, and the sinking of the ship gives you no extras.

    - There is no progress in this game. What you start with on day 1, is the same you will have on day 3000 as it stands now.
    You do not gain experience or levels, you can't buy better equipment, ships, or anything to better yourself with. The only thing you do is to deliver fetch quests, which gives you gold and standing with the different factions, and this again makes you able to only buy cosmetic items, nothing other than cosmetic items.

    This is a full release from a big company, for a AAA price tag. For your money, you get something more akin to an early release game from an indie company.

    The game has huge potential, and the fun we were having in the beginning is a sign of what would've been possible with this game.
    I would've loved to have seen storyline quests, more interactive and engaging NPC enemies. A more vibrant world of discovery and adventure, and something that makes you feel like your character, ship and equipment is progressing and becoming better.

    However, what we are left with, is a game that has the depth of a puddle. A barren sandbox sea, with no interactions other than the ones you can make yourself with other players. Generic and boring quests, and no character or equipment progression.

    This is most certainly not worth the price tag, and I would not recommend anyone to buy this, other than the 14-day free trial from the xbox game pass.

    Maybe they will continue development, and maybe it will be a good game in the future. That's a possibility, but this is a full AAA release with a AAA price tag from a big game company, and the complete lack of content just can't be excused.    … Expand

    Requires Windows 10, located on some kind of Microsoft store which is even worse than Uplay, crazy high price for an unfinished beta version of the game, lack of content. DON'T BUY IT AND DON'T UPDATE WINDOWS FOR THIS !

    This game is little more than a scam in my eyes. A pretty, shallow present wrapping with an empty (sand)box inside. Don't get me wrong, the first few hours are fun, mainly if you play with friends. Just fooling around and everything is new. (and since barely anyone paints their ship, it's hard to tell them apart) This grind is there for two reasons: To keep you playing for longer, since there is not much else to play towards, and to sell future micro-transactions.

    One thing that personally stuck out to me as a sore thumb is the music. I love the concept that they made. There is no soundtrack, but you get two instruments, to play your own music with friends. It's really fun to make your own pirate song. But this hole thing turns into a pain when you realize there is only 4 songs, and not even the most known shanties. (maybe a few more you can discover, but haven't found any of them) After a while this will get to your nerves as they become very repetitive after hours of play. It is just a detail, but it shows the enormous lack of effort that went into this game. With this concept they could easily have made 30+ shanties or more varying instruments like a flute, a drum or a guitar.

    Overall, this game lacks so much content, I don't even think its honest to call this thing a game at all.

    If you wanna make this game better, try to add special skills that can be used on npcs, and can be upgraded, for example a fireball or whatever. and also make the weapons upgradeable as well, so player can upgrade specific weapons according to their preferred playstyle, for example more bullets on pistol or shotgun, faster reload and such. give players something to work on, so they can feel they achieve something.

    -Cosmetics offer nothing except a change in appearance. And because there is nothing but cosmetics a person that has played the game for 1 minute is no different than a person that's played it for 300 hours.

    Sea Of Thieves has decent basic gameplay and very good sailing mechanics. That being said it has very little content, no progression, no challenge, it's extremely grindy and it has long stretches of time where nothing happens. I have never experienced such an empty game.

Indeed, all you can do is make your own stories with your mates, but without the framework of content it gets old very, very quickly. Yes, an open world sandbox is great in theory, but even GTA etc. understand that you can't just create a toy box and not put toys in the thing to play with!

    You're done inside 30 minutes, an hour or two max. I'm not joking. I wish I was, I really do, because this is one of those dream concepts in gaming - live like a pirate, swing a lightsaber, fly a ship in open space and explore etc. Unfortunately, just like No Man's Sky, Sea of Thieves has absolutely no idea how to make that dream a reality.

    I'm already hoping they take this as the proof of concept of a sequel that could be utterly phenomenal if done right. But the consumer shouldn't be paying full price for a proof of concept, and as it stands the player base is going to fall sharply and make this game totally worthless, even moreso than it is now at its' peak.

    If you want good Loot you are forced to do PVP on a little "Dungeon Isle". If you dont do that you have to grind for hours and hours doing the same Quest over and over again and thats realy boring. Played the Game für like 10h and did not enjoy it at all (maybe 2-3 laughs). Dont by it if you just want to sail a bit casualy, there is not much conent and you get killed a lot.

    Truly Beautiful graphics with stunning gameplay and mechanics but really lacks any direction / content to do after repeating yourself with one of in game quests to do. Such a shame...

Getting treasure for the umpteenth time is about as rewarding as a happy meal toy. Rolling dice in Risk is more exciting than the combat. I could go on, but as for now this game isn't worth 20, let alone 60 bucks. If they add a significant bit toBig and beautiful but ultimately shallow sea.     This game entirely depends on you to make your own fun. No plot to speak of, repetitive quests and uncontrolled griefing.
    There's a couple of hours of content, after that it's up to you to organise your own excitement.

Not to mention various bugs I've experienced from my items disappearing to my money suddenly disappearing to not even being able to play the game due to server issues.

They could've put so much stuff in 1 year of updates, like REAL quests, a story maybe, even a background story(because there is no lore), maybe add some interesting places to visit like pve island where people can met other players and have a drink or i don't know(the cartoonish childish artstyle doesn't help the pirate context).
    Just buy gmod for 1 dollar and play the pirate mode, if that's not enough go and play ac 4 black flag.    … Expand

    I have played the beta and there is little to no difference from the final game. The windows 10 store only is a nightmare, expecially when you have to play with friends. Xbox live is a s**t.
    The game has a lot of potential but 60€ for a beta it is not worth it...
    No man sky was better at lunch, this says a lot...
    Please do not support this kind of buisness!

    Maybe if you're into hardcore PvP this game might suit you. For anyone else who just wants to have a fun time look somewhere else. This game is full of griefers and it's almost impossible to do the longer missions without someone else ruining your day.

    It doesn't meet any of the standards of recent video game hits, with hundreds of collectibles and progress bars to incentivise the users to play more, and show their progression in the game.     You want to chill and dig up some chests, kill some skelletons ? You can do it, but you should expect some dangers, like an another crew who wants to sink you to get your booty. Maybe the Kraken will put his/her tentacles around your ship, seeking for blood and broken wood. Or, some huge shark teeth will break through your deck, the Megalodon is always lurking from the depths. Seeing a skelleton ship rising from under the seas, shooting sparkling cursed canon balls at you while you're peacefully going back to sell your loot can be surprising too. And every time, it's your choice, it's your way to deal with those, run away or fight back.

    Now that the skelletons forts/stronghold are up a lot more often (as well as the Skelleton ships fights), you can be involved into a lot more PvP fights aswell, making allliances, fighting to death, the choice is yours !

    I'm just talking about what happens in the game, but the technical aspects of Sea of Thieves are trully stunning. The sound design is perfect, it shows the perfect atmorsphere and at the same time gives your every informations you need to understand what's happening around you (A gunpowder barrel getting lit, a hole into your hull, ropes being pulled, anchor being droped, skelleton ship rising from the depths, the last wave of the fort spawned, and so on...).
    The graphic aspect is up to your personnal feeling of course, but the cartoonish style can be colorful into the Shores of plenty or depressing into the Wilds, dangerous into the Devil's Roar... And oh my god, the water is just ridiculously beautiful and makes sailing a pure pleasure.

    I can go on for years about this game, I found into Sea of Thieves something i've lost during my gamer life, pure gaming pleasure ! Playing for the sake's of fun, into a world full of possibilities and danger, that can be sometimes frustrating but always rewarding.

    I've learnt something with Sea of Thieves, it's that you don't need to be an absolute content seeker to find pleasure as a gamer !

    Trust me, if you want to experience a unique game in a beautiful world with plenty of things to do, specially with friends, you should just dive into this magnificent ocean of possibilities and meet pirates from all around the globe.    … Expand

    I've played the game since before it released and it is currently the worst it has ever been.

    The community is toxic and never cooperate, which means you can't enjoy most of the games content.
    The devs refuse to add PvE servers and so I recommend anyone and everyone avoid this hell by not playing.

Hardcore level grinders hate this game because it just isn't built for incremental skill improvement toward some endgame state.     Sea of Thieves has successfully redeemed its clumsy launch with Rare being a developer that fully commits to the title with monthly updates for more than two years. Now – it is a game brimming with content, adventure and gorgeous pirate atmosphere with arguably being the best pirate game available and a truly fun multiplayer experience.

    A year of updates has helped fill out its light content, but the real magic was there from the start. Rare’s take on cartoon piracy encourages you to behave as a cartoon pirate should: a little bloodthirsty, a little silly, and almost always drunk.
