I am really disappointed in this game, I had such high hopes for it. It is very overpriced and lacking content and a goal for playing.

Where are the ship configuration options such as different types of weapons and defense options like grappling hooks to reel in ships or dropping oil to set it ablaze to ward off followers, being able to change weapon loadouts and positioning and having defensive measures on your ships when being boarded would have been such a brilliant feature.

It's shocking how barebones this game is. The game looks and sounds beautiful, the water is the best I've ever seen, but the basic gameplay and lack of mechanics will kill this game. Such a shame, this held so much promise and the idea is brilliant. Roaming the seas with your friends playing those instruments is terrific, there's just not much to do.

Sea of Thieves is a great technical demo for a ship sailing game that could have been. It looks fantastic and the base model is good, but beyond that it falls very short. Essentially all the game has to offer will be done by about hour 5, 10 or so hours and you've experienced the nuts and bolts of the entire game.

To me it feels like a F2P or $20 game that was supposed to have content packs, quests, add-ons, story line unlocks, and other things you paid for over time. Instead they went with the full price route and it falls short in almost every aspect of actual gameplay. It looks good, the base of it is fun, but all the "story" and progress is just repetitive quests that are nearly identical with a few hard bosses (paired with boring combat) sprinkled in between.

In two years, this game might be fantastic. Its minimalist design and learn as you go sandbox feeling have a lot of potential. As of right now, you wake up in a bar with no tutorial and realize it's because if the game had one it would be more compelling than any story or faction it has to offer.

Stay away until next year and hope for the best.

All the items you can buy with in-game currency are cosmetic only. It honestly feels like a game made by a small dev team that should have come out on Steam Early Access, not a game from Rare backed by Microsoft (ESPECIALLY considering all the launch issues....5 stress tests, and the game is dead on launch day? Come on).

Ignore the fanboys screaming "BLEH IT'S NOT ON MY CONSOLE" and "BLEH IT'S ONE OF MY HANDFUL OF EXCLUSIVES SO IT'S GOOD". The content to price tag ratio is insanely off on this one. I've easily gotten more game for $20 from much smaller devs on Steam. Shame on Microsoft for pushing this so hard. It's basically launch day No Man's Sky on water with fetch quests and 4-man co-op. If content isn't added, and soon, it'll be dead in the water in a matter of months.

The customization is currently very lacking.. you can choose from few different colors for your boat and sail... thats it..you cant customize the details on the boat at all expect for few choices for your front decor. The clothing choices are also very lame and non-imaginable. The funny thing is your only reward from progression are those lame only for look items.. At its current state the game heavily lacks in the three core elements which i believe to be valuable in games like sea of thieves, Progression, Quests (Voyages), and loot. Despite it covering these three categories it stumbles in diversity; with loot being gold every time you cash in whatever items you find and having no real presents to game play since gold is only used to buy cosmetics voyages which are just three run of the mill fetch quests either having you kill things look for treasure or look for animals in which (as stated before) is used to cash in for gold to buy cosmetics. Even though the game does have some cool looking skins knowing that they don't do anything except make your guy look a little cooler is just discouraging to the player. The game in the long run is just sailing to and from island to outpost to make more gold to buy more skins which doesn't reflect a players skill but just how much time they have on there hands. Despite having a promising first few hours with breath taking scenery, amazing water effects, and great ship mechanics it just doesn't deliver in a fun repetitive grind to become so-called pirate legend with missions being tedious and sometimes out right frustrating for especially people who play solo. The occasional fort is fun but it falls under the same problem with loot just being items to turn in for money in turn being used to by skins. With decent game play and astounding visuals the game falters in content and progression.

And people are thrilled by the devs still updating the game with "great features"? What features? Vulcanics islands? Which are nothing but normal islands but with magma. A cracken, new megs and a skeleton ships that will randomly spawn? Wow, gamers today can really have so much fun and be okay with shady developers. They could've put so much stuff in 1 year of updates, like REAL quests, a story maybe, even a background story(because there is no lore), maybe add some interesting places to visit like pve island where people can met other players and have a drink or i don't know(the cartoonish childish artstyle doesn't help the pirate context).

My opinion on Sea of Thieves is extremely mixed. There are definitely things to love about the game, but there are also others that would make me not recommend the game.

To start with the positive, the game definitely nails the sense of adventure. It is simply a really fun time with friends and just being in the world is fun. There are plenty of different activities to do with friends, the Tall Tale quests being a highlight. (Especially the Pirates of the Caribbean-themed quests, those could be a game on their own.)

However, the developer insists on the game being always online, which is definitely a deal-breaker for a large majority of people. A pirate game where other people can try to steal your loot sounds nothing but appropriate on paper, but it has the potential to completely fall flat.

PvP could be a rewarding experience if all parties wanted to battle, but that's simply not the case. Most of the time battles end up being unsatisfying and one-sided, and simply ends up being a waste of time for everyone. It basically devolves into bullying PvE players for the sake of bullying.
Rare had a solution for this with the arena mode but has since scrapped it due to managing it poorly.

Unfortunately, the always-online nature of this game has led to another issue: the Sea of Thieves fanbase is one of the most toxic player bases you'll ever find online.
It is difficult to enjoy an online game filled with people throwing insults and harassment. There are definitely some extremely creative and awesome fans out there, but the sad truth is that they are a few and far between.
There is an easy solution that would fix the game and maybe even bring back some of the 30 million people who downloaded the game and immediately quit after seeing what the game is like.
PvE servers - the ability to play the game with friends only.
Personally I would simply make the online portion of the game free-to-play to increase the amount of players engaging in PvP, and make private games and the Tall Tales exclusive to people who
    actually bought the game.

This, however, would require Rare to admit that they made a mistake and change the game despite it not being their original vision.
I fully believe this is the right move to take. Imagine other games if they didn't listen to fan feedback:
imagine Super Smash Bros but being unable to turn off items because it wasn't the creator's vision that it's a serious fighting game.

Because there isn't really a game here. It has one concept and it hasn't been fleshed out at all. The game world looks utterly sensational, but there's little to do in it. Indeed, all you can do is make your own stories with your mates, but without the framework of content it gets old very, very quickly. Yes, an open world sandbox is great in theory, but even GTA etc. understand that you can't just create a toy box and not put toys in the thing to play with!

You're done inside 30 minutes, an hour or two max. I'm not joking. I wish I was, I really do, because this is one of those dream concepts in gaming - live like a pirate, swing a lightsaber, fly a ship in open space and explore etc. Unfortunately, just like No Man's Sky, Sea of Thieves has absolutely no idea how to make that dream a reality.

I'm already hoping they take this as the proof of concept of a sequel that could be utterly phenomenal if done right. But the consumer shouldn't be paying full price for a proof of concept, and as it stands the player base is going to fall sharply and make this game totally worthless, even moreso than it is now at its' peak.

    Avoid.

Roughly Three hours in and I’ve only seen one other person while playing solo or with friends. The game is gorgeous, however on higher settings has a pretty bad frame rate on PC. I’ve never seen water look this good honestly. The bad for me is how simple this game is & I do mean simple.

There are 3 factions and each one gives you fetch quests to go and get something to bring back to them. Each time you do it you will get a faction number to rise which unlocks a cosmetic, exclusive to that faction while getting some gold. You then use the gold to buy skins for your character(that you don’t get to create), your weapons and ship. That’s it. There’s no story, there’s no other quest elements. All of the gear is cosmetic and plays the same as what you start out with. There are chests worth more and some do stuff like fill up your boat randomly with water if it’s a cursed chest.

Overall it feels like a game still in beta and maybe one that was gonna use the loot box algorithm. I’m really disappointed in Rare & for the millionth time this gen, Microsoft. It’s not worth $60 and I felt like the $35 I put into it was too much also. I’d have paid maybe $15 for it, if anything honestly.

This is very much the “Destiny” of pirate games and what I mean by that is another sixty dollar title has little content, a very buggy launch and is very repetitive. It is far worse in that sense than Destiny, but so people know where im coming from that is what I mean. I don't see this making it very far even with some changes due to the slew of games coming out this year, including what looks like a more ambitious pirate themed video game.

Suddenly another ship comes and you fight to the bitter end, win, and then they respawn literally 1-5 minutes away and come again and again until you run low on cannonballs, planks and bananas. They then start to use the ramming technique until you die. Thats what this game is like. There are a lot of really nice players out there, but a large amount of them dont follow basic rules. To the question "Do players that die in PVP get a slight punishment?" They answered NO. To directly quote them: "Update to Death Cost.
Please note, we never intended to charge players for PvP related deaths, as we understand the negative impact this would have on player experience. We understand that this addition to the release notes was a little confusing, and in the future we will ensure that any future updates we discuss give you a better understanding of how and why we're implementing it. Sea of Thieves is constantly evolving, and any feature we will test, monitor data and listen to your feedback to ensure we're making the right decisions."
I really do love that they put their time into this game to make it better and fix the damn servers that are only getting slightly better. This one time where i dont follow my "Dont buy games at release" i get stabbed again. Its obvious a game cant come out perfectly polished and 100% error free. I just don't like how it behaves and at its current state i don't suggest playing hardcore and just wait a week or two until the first patches dropped.

    3. There's no point - There's literally no reason to play this game. Nothing done in game progresses anything of any substance. You can buy cosmetic upgrades to your character, weapons, and ship. Yay...

If you have to play this game, the only good thing I can say about it, is that the "story" quests are very well designed and are genuinely fun to solve their complicated puzzles. However they usually take a couple hours to finish, and any blood thirsty player can come along and kill you, take your quest items, and force you to restart the entire quest.

On the other hand it's a PvE questing game across a fair sized map with an average amount of (heavily recycled) content that some players would actually find quite appealing. The issue is the way these concepts are integrated together - they aren't. They're just thrown together in small population servers and called "emergent gameplay" in the hopes that people will figure things out as they go along. It's the perfect recipe for a toxic community the likes of which hasn't been seen for decades - seriously Rare, how could you have been so naive as to ignore the seperation between PvP and PvE communities that other (far more successful) developers sussed out in the previous millenium?

It does at least look and sound good, but the chilled-out atmosphere the audio-visual design invokes is completely at odds with the way the game actually feels to play. And sure, the islands have a few different design styles with a reasonably well laid-out map, but other than the pitiful handful of other players per server shard (20 players absolute max post-2020? pathetic!) the world feels completely devoid of life. NPCs stand around like emoting vending machines (and somehow have less personality than the actual honest-to-god vending machines of the Borderlands series) on outposts that are completely devoid of character (and characters). The Tall Tales storyline quests are mostly tedious with a few decent ideas sprinkled in here and there, but the writing doesn't stand up to more than 5 seconds serious consideration (especially the more recent additional releases) and the expectation that you'd want to do them all five times each AND go on a tedious clueless treasure hunt for books with a few poorly written lines of flavour text for each and every one to unlock their super-special-secret (terrible) extra cosmetic rewards.... yeah, the old Rare we knew and love who knew how to design a compelling game dropped the ball on this one.

From the time we first saw this game to the time it got released, I am not convinced that Rare spent any more development time on it. The game lacks even the most basic depth and variety for quests, combat, ships, and character creation. Oh, there isn't ACTUALLY any character creation, despite all of the games rewards being cosmetic, even though it's a first person game you never see your character in. Every seemingly good idea they initially had for the game is either absent of horribly executed on, and there is no sense of progression or meaning whatsoever. The emergent gameplay requires you to cross your fingers and hope to run into something interesting, when really the most interesting thing that can happen is you getting up to pee and coming back to see your treasure chests and quest items being ransacked by some other poor souls who fell for this awful excuse for a AAA game.

Avoid this at all costs. If this is what they delivered at launch, there is no chance for redemption even years down the line, especially when their post-launch plans include a death penalty, showing how out of touch they are with what players want. A colossal disappointment all around, but they still sold millions. Great work.

In a Game thats all about pirates and ships, you have 4 weapons, 2 ships and 3 Items (Bananas, Canonballs, Woodplanks) Thats all. The whole progression is based around looting chests and selling them for gold, which you can spend on cosmetic items. Thats the entire mechanic of this game.
For newcomers this game offers no tutorial or hints whatsoever, you get thrown into it without any idea how the gameplay mechanics are supposed to work (how to get contracts, how to finish them etc.). Therefore, if you want to learn the game, you have to read through various reddit posts just to understand the whole gameplay loop.
Then the game is terribly flawed by several bugs. You lose your gold when you restart the game, contracts just dont give gold when finished, weapons not showing, gamecrashes etc.
This game should be an early access title with a $15 pricetag, but its a buggy mess with zero content for 70 f*cking Bucks.

Of course, you might be having fun with it when playing with Friends. But everything is fun with the right people, even smashing bricks in your face does.

It's fun in the beginning for sure, and having a crew of 4 friends can entertain you for a couple of days of playtime, but after doing the same thing over and over, you start to realize there is nothing more.

The game has basically zero content. It's a sandbox, and it's a barren wasteland of a sandbox.
    - The world is empty. Other than generic skeletons, and the same npcs that give you fetch quests in every port, there is nothing in the entire world other than yourself, and some sharks.

    - The quests are super-generic fetch quests. There are no storyline quests, there is no interaction, and there is no variety.
After you've done quests for a couple of hours, you've seen all there is to see. For the remainder of your playtime, the quests will now be complete carbon copies.

    - PVP is the only ray of light in this entire experience, but if you're a crew of 1-2, expect to be completely ganked by 4-man crews over and over and over. If you're a 4-man crew, expect to gank smaller ships, which will give you basically nothing, as no one ever carries any treasure, and the sinking of the ship gives you no extras.

    - There is no progress in this game. What you start with on day 1, is the same you will have on day 3000 as it stands now.
You do not gain experience or levels, you can't buy better equipment, ships, or anything to better yourself with. The only thing you do is to deliver fetch quests, which gives you gold and standing with the different factions, and this again makes you able to only buy cosmetic items, nothing other than cosmetic items.

This is a full release from a big company, for a AAA price tag. For your money, you get something more akin to an early release game from an indie company.

The game has huge potential, and the fun we were having in the beginning is a sign of what would've been possible with this game.
I would've loved to have seen storyline quests, more interactive and engaging NPC enemies. A more vibrant world of discovery and adventure, and something that makes you feel like your character, ship and equipment is progressing and becoming better.

However, what we are left with, is a game that has the depth of a puddle. A barren sandbox sea, with no interactions other than the ones you can make yourself with other players. Generic and boring quests, and no character or equipment progression.

This is most certainly not worth the price tag, and I would not recommend anyone to buy this, other than the 14-day free trial from the xbox game pass.

Maybe they will continue development, and maybe it will be a good game in the future. That's a possibility, but this is a full AAA release with a AAA price tag from a big game company, and the complete lack of content just can't be excused.

However, the most important thing is the gameplay, which is honestly awful. Here's a quick way to sum it up. You grind for sometimes hours looking for treasures across various islands constantly interrupted by never ending hoards of skeleton warriors. If it was a few set waves or certain spawn locations, then ok. But no, it seems every 20 feet you run in any direction another 4 or 5 spawn. If you stop, they surround you. If you try to outrun them more just spawn in front of you and now you have 10 of them. Did I mention you can only swing your sword like every 2 seconds and only have 5 bullets before having to go back to the ship to reload? Did I mention half of them have guns and exploding barrels. Did I mention they NEVER.... STOP... SPAWNING? It goes from being a fun challenge, to annoying, to just downright ridiculous and you wonder why you are still playing.
But the worst part about the gameplay is once you spend all the time getting these treasures, there are going to be troll players who do nothing but wait for people to get these treasures and overrun your ship and steal it all. And then sail into port, while spawn killing you, and get all of the game currency for all of the work you put into it. I don't care if it's a "pirate" game, this is the stupidest, worst game design I've ever seen. There goes the two hours you just spent hopping from island to island, you're getting absolutely nothing for it and those other guys are. "Fun"?
If this kind of nonsense sounds fun to you then go waste your money on it. I wish I could get mine back.

Tbh, it's not a game, it's a $$$ unfinished DLC for future $$$DLCs, that will have more future $$$DLCs... We need Cash Shop and Lootboxed here and even Battlefront 2 with Destiny 2 will become a Great-Deals...

If the game is only fun when you play with friends, so... this game have something very wrong. I really need to "do" something to make the game fun? Why the game is not fun for itself?

The game itself delivers a tecnhical masterpiece, but the lack of content and servers issues destroyed the overall experience. Just one map? Just 3 weapons? U kidding microsoft

    Microsoft stole my game (ru)
One thing is not engaging in the market, but stealing a game already paid for from one's steam library is another thing entirely. I'm sure there's some legality clause that allows them to do it, but from a moral standpoint my money have just been stolen by a company in a move that people born in other countries will see as virtuous. Welcome to clownworld everyone.

Sea of Thieves has successfully redeemed its clumsy launch with Rare being a developer that fully commits to the title with monthly updates for more than two years. Now – it is a game brimming with content, adventure and gorgeous pirate atmosphere with arguably being the best pirate game available and a truly fun multiplayer experience.

A year of updates has helped fill out its light content, but the real magic was there from the start. Rare’s take on cartoon piracy encourages you to behave as a cartoon pirate should: a little bloodthirsty, a little silly, and almost always drunk.

Sea of Thieves has a solid foundation, but unfortunately there is no content and in a few of gameplay the feeling of being a pirate completely disappears. [Issue#285]
