Then the rest of the novelty wears off once you realize you move super slow, absolutely everything is bizarre about the environment so it’s hard to understand how one puzzle connects to the next, the animations that play are also suuuuper slow and you have to just sit through them even if you fail to do the right thing. Doors don’t stay open in some areas… you have to go through a two step process to unlock them and draw them open. Then they’re timed, so if you don’t make it through the door you have to go through the slow unlock and open animations again…. They spent 90% of the budget on the graphics and forgot they needed a game

Everything from graphics design through sound design is stunning. Story and lore are deep and really interesting. I could only wish that this game would be an interactive simple and linear experience, without stupid unnecessary puzzles, shooting mechanics or easy to get lost labyrinths. It's a shame that so little gamers will actually see that masterpiece of art in it's whole glory. But unfortunately it is what it is. It's just a bad game. I highly recommend to read Scorn official art book if you like the concept of this game. Art book contains beautiful illustrations and it's explaining whole story. For me the actual art book was much much better then a game itself. Expand

I also encountered a few bugs, being stuck in geometry, unable to move and a key item that I could not pick up and had to reload. With the terrible checkpoint system that makes you lose over twenty minutes a big annoyance.

The visuals and sound design are stunning. To better understand the story the artbook should have been included in the main menu, I can only recommend anyone reading it to get a better understanding.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hard for me to admit, but I am a bit disappointed. First of all, it is unforgivable for a Serbian developer not to include the Serbian language option, considering how, besides the menu, there's absolutely no text, so it's not that difficult (they also have Bulgarian and Romanian, but for some reason they didn't include Serbian?).
Secondly, I get that this game is actually more of an experience than a game, and I don't have a problem with it being a walking simulator, because the environments are gorgeous and stunning, and definitely worth trying the game out, but as soon as you get to the combat, the curiosity and the enjoyment end...
Either the weapons you are given are too weak, or the enemies are bullet sponges who spawn a lot more than they need to, health and ammo are very rare, and on top of that, you have no way to dodge attacks except run behind a corner (and good luck avoiding that sniper-like spit of the little birdie thing or charging of that bull creature, once he downs you, that's basically it, you have nothing left to do but die and start over). Enemies would have been perfectly fine for a game like this if they appeared every now and then, but once you realize there's at least two of them on the every third corner you turn, it takes the tension and the edge away, and turns the gameplay into a tedious task: only 20 minutes after the introduction of the first enemy, I was losing my patience and telling myself "Again? I have to fight these things again? And there's three of them?!"
I don't know if the developers wanted to make a Dark-Souls-hard game, but this is not a way to do it. In an enjoying difficult game, your skill is what matters; in Scorn, you don't really have a way to use any of your skills, it's just frustratingly hard and unnecessarily difficult, for a puzzle-exploration game.

If you want to buy this, it really is a one of a kind experience, but arm yourself with patience and nerves of steel once you get to the combat. My honest advice would be to get it on GamePass only. I hope they tone down the enemies in a future update, and make the game a bit more enjoyable.
Anyhow, this is Ebb Software's first big game, and they're also not a huge team with a lot of resources, so I have to give them some slack.

    Thoughts-
Scorn is an incredible experience, and I’d honestly recommend it to horror fans just because of how unique it is, with aesthetics ripped right out of the mind of H.R. Giger. It features jaw-droppingly gorgeous visuals and phenomenal audio design that really help pile its thick atmosphere on the player. Throughout the relatively-short game—I completed it in a single sitting over around 7 hours—the oppressive atmosphere and the general mystery of its setting was more than enough to pull me through.

Exploration in Scorn is a lot of fun, and there’s a level of enjoyment to be had just in admiring the craftsmanship of the visuals and audio alone. As a complete package, however, Scorn is a bit of a let down, not because of its short length, but rather its abysmal combat.

Since it feels like it’s meant to be more of an experience than a game, I believe Scorn succeeds at what it was trying to achieve. Sure, it doesn’t have much in the way of an obvious story to follow, but like I said, even just wandering around ends up being quite a bit of fun.

I greatly enjoyed the walking simulator aspect of walking around, examining what is around me and trying to understand the world. The puzzles were hit or miss, though the interaction you have with the world through devices and tools really got you in the mood.

The combat was basic and frustrating at times, and I dare say not needed. I would even say it would have been better if you were never given weapons and were expected to avoid things but that's just me.

Besides the length, my only real criticism is how the story was presented. I felt it needed to provide the player with more definitive information in the form of objects/items/creatures in the world. Far too much is left in the air and leaves the player wondering what happened. This was of course the intention but isn't satisfying to the player.

In the end I want more in this world. I want another story, or expansion of this one to fill in some gaps.

Please do not read reviews of people who only used to playing big AAA BLOCK BUSTER throw everything in your face / 50-100 hours + games... With that out of the way this game deserve your time for sure.

So here is my short list:

    - game is NOT worth $40, maybe that is the biggest sin of this release but I think the price will come down fast. $20 is ideal price or even better play it on Xbox game pass. Support the developers more and buy it on EPIC or GOG

    - Graphic is FENOMENAL... The attention to detail is simply stunning. The dark ambient , colors , sculptures, animations... everything is top notch. I think most of the development time was spend on the art. So take it slow and enjoy the view. It's simply beautiful in gross ways.

    - Sound is AMAZING as well. Little sounds, big sound, ambience, meat sound, mechanical fx, steps and even some subtle music everything fits perfectly into presentation.

    - Gameplay is OK. I know people complain about this but it is really not that bad. It's not doom but its fun. I tried to play it with controller but after a few close encounters I realized that mouse and keyboard is still the king and save yourself a lot of nerves.

    - People complain about autosave, I had one a little far away autosave so I had to repeat a few steps every time I get killed. Still after getting the grips with monsters and controls it was OK

    - Story? I still don't get it , no spoiler but I think there is definitely a bigger meaning in all of this. Final ACT is full of stuff to think about.

    - Maybe they could incorporate some kind of story telling during the game (like senua sacrifice has) . I have a feeling that this have been a missed opportunity to show and expand the story in some way...

    - Game is around 4 to 5 hours max if you stretch it. For me that was totally enough as well you can get all achievements pretty easily. I love the feeling of completing everything without hundreds of unnecessary achievement left behind that only fanatics can get after playing the game for years.

This game is PURE ART. So go play it as you cant see often stuff like this in video games.

I caught myself several times just sitting with my mouth open amazed at the artwork and the weirdly intriguing things I was surrounded by. That is exactly what the developers always intended it to be. It was never intended to be a shooter. It was never intended to make full sense. It was intended to be art that just happens to be a game. But to appreciate art, we have to draw some of our own conclusions. In that reasoning the developers did give us plenty of environmental clues as to what this world was and possibly what happened. It’s story or your purpose is not straightforward, but if you're really paying attention you can see the everything nearly perfectly. For those wanting more story, the art book explains more by holding your hand through the design process of this world and what things are or possibly are.

Scorn has its issues. It’s combat can be annoying and not accurate. In fact, the enemies in one section deter you from exploring slowly, which is it’s main draw to play. That could’ve been dealt with better somehow. Its puzzles are hard, but I found myself wanting more and easier versions of them in sprinkled around in bite size doses as well. It’s tragically short. I also feel like it could’ve been half the amount of time longer. It probably should’ve been 11-12 hours of game when if you’re fast to normal paced you can play it in 3-8. I was satisfied with the last level, but I could’ve used about two more areas with different aesthetics sandwiched between to round the whole thing out. It’s very harrowing as a whole, but didn’t get to me too bad. I am a horror and Giger fan though. Some other players might need to spread the playing out for the emotional toll it may take.

It’s an experience. And for that it succeeds. I caution to even call it a full game and rather an interactive art and puzzle story. It has some flaws, is tragically short, very heartbreaking, but so worth it for the trip info this alien world. It’s not for everyone. Go into it with open expectations about what type of experience it is. Don’t hope for something the creators have directly told us it’s not. It’s not a shooter and it’s not text or dialog driven. You are there to take it in, analyze the surroundings, and make your way through with every gruesome and heart breaking step.

For the experience it is, it succeeds completely. I’d love a sequel or DLC and gladly delve back into it or something like it. The one thing it could use to break up the heartache is a little more reward or investment into the character. Scorn is for you if you’re a surreal art lover, sci fi buff, horror fan or if you enjoy speculating about strange stories. It’s an absolutely gorgeous piece of work made with so much love. It’s something to be amazed by and does it extremely well. I’m thankful someone dared to make it and hope there is always more of that risk taking for art in the future. It’s more than worth it to create and to experience.

The 4/10 is for the graphics alone, as the plot (there is none) and gameplay (it's extremely basic) don't garner any points. This really took 6 years to make? It's a four-hour long game with a really disappointing ending as if the developers didn't have enough time to think of a satisfying conclusion...

The shooting is bad, it's just plain bad. There are 3 enemy types and you move slower than a snail stuck in glue. There is one boss (which is really just another puzzle) and the game is 100% linear with zero exploration. Flip this switch, grab that jar of goo, get a piece of your body ripped off, etc. Not worth playing, watch a YouTube video walkthru instead as there is no satisfaction in finishing the game yourself.

I don't think it's even worth playing if you got it for free, it's just too slow and extremely unsatisfying! Don't expect any answers or satisfaction from this walking simulator/puzzle game.
