This game, simply put, is absolutely sublime from start to finish; it is a charming cartoon whale in the slurry filled ocean that is the current games industry; it doesn't want to be taken seriously, the game just wants you to have fun with all of its might, and that alone is worth at least a look.

If you like fun, and games, then PLAY THIS GAME.

I just don't know it. I really liked SR III, it's probably my favorite game in a long time. And they kept the graphics and most of the animations from that game. But I don't know about the story.. It's unrealistic which I really like about Saints Row, and there are some funny parts. But in general it's "Meh..." The powers are unnecessary IMHO. It would be a great game without them.

In my eyes, it's just an Expension Pack, priced as a whole new game. It's definitely not a new game. If you liked SR III like I did, you'll like it but since it's a new game you won't be too impressed by it.
If you hated SR III, you'll hate this game too. Because it's the same game.

6/10. They could've done a little more effort on the story, and maybe update the graphics and animations.

I honestly enjoyed this game. Some will say that SR has gone too far with this, but I don't think that actually. This is a game with many references to the popular movies and games (Terminator, MGS, Robocop, Space Invaders, Mass Effact series...). Has a better story than SR3. Technical issues are here too. My final verdict is nine.

It's night, all the time, they got rid of the day/night system, and throughout the game it's just nighttime all the time, however, when you finish the campaign you get an option to change the time to whenever you want. A pretty disappointing addition to the Saints Row series. The developer should make an original IP instead of shoehorning what they want to do in this series, completely disregarding the previous games and giving a middle finger to its fans.

The graphics looks far more basic and the gameplay feels like it is less engaging than was the case previously. The main problem is really the glitchy control and very low rez looking textures. I brought alot of DLC for the SR3 and maybe I got a graphics packs somewhere along the line. This feels like a far older game. It just feels older than it should and the usual humour and saucy characters are not enough to hide the disappointing issues under the surface. Enough with the GTA comparisons. Having played every single GTA and Saints Row game, I can assure you that they aren't even close to competitors. The Saints Row series has really declined over the year, yet everyone hails this game as being a savior
I didn't think it was possible, but everything I said in my SR3 review works here as well. Volition, go yourselves for selling out.

Enough with the GTA comparisons. Having played every single GTA and Saints Row game, I can assure you that they aren't even close to competitors.

The Saints Row series has really declined over the year, yet everyone hails this game as being a savior simply because GTA IV was too boring. Most of the people who are reviewing this game never played SR1, so they think Saints Row was always this ultra silly, casual alternative to the slightly more serious GTA. In the first game, the whole focus was the 3rd Street Saints. You weren't a Gary Stu, you were just a wild card in the gang. Most of the gameplay revolved around following your Lieutenant's orders. You actually had to use gang members, play the activities, and gain territory. It wasn't simple, nor was it easy. Level 8 Snatch activities, I rest my case. Those were infuriatingly impossible.

In the first game, we had more clothing customization. We had more layers of clothes to choose from. We could zip and unzip outfits, turn hats, put up our hoods, lower our pants, and frankly do whatever the hell we wanted. There was more intricate jewelry, a wider variety of clothing stores, and most importantly of all, colors mattered. Nowadays, respect is nothing more than some equivalent of levels in your average RPG.

In SR1, you could rob stores at different times of the day. If you burglarized stores at night, you broke in to the back, cracked the safe, and carried out boxes of goods. You then had to load them into trucks and drive them to a fence.

In SR1, you could buy liquor and joints. Not that getting high or drunk was all that important, but it made you feel more like a gangster and it also allowed you to punch people ridiculous distances.

In SR1, activities had 8 levels instead of 6. The final 2 levels of practically every activity were absurdly challenging, even on Normal.

In SR1, respect and money didn't grow on trees. You couldn't just buy meaningless properties that sit there in a static environment and do nothing. You actually had to play the activities and contribute to the well being of your gang to continue to do missions. In SR3 respect is thrown at me for taking a piss on the sidewalk.

In SR1, there was an actual story worth following. Los Carnales, the Rollers, and the Vice Kings put the SR2 and SR3 gangs to shame. Benjamin King alone is a better character than the combined cast of SR3. The narrative isn't limited to LOL SO RANDUMB kind of humor made for 12 year olds who are convinced that GTA is supposed to be some ultra silly casual party game. That's literally where the SR2/SR3 audience came from. They played San Andreas, thought that every GTA game was like that, got mad about GTA IV, then forced their way into the Saints Row userbase.

In SR1, there were stronghold missions. Even these were kept in SR2. In SR3, a stronghold is some useless building with nothing to do in it that sits around and makes you more money to spend on absolutely nothing.

In SR1, your phone was actually useful. There were phone numbers all throughout the game that made Stilwater feel much more alive and real. It wasn't limited to 911, taxis, and other dumb ****.

I could continue to go on about all the features that SR1 had that were stripped away in SR2 and further removed in SR3, but I'll end with this. I 100% completed Saints Row The Third in 17 hours and 40 minutes. If you actually think this game deserves anything more than a 6, you must have the lowest standards on the planet. There is no new content to this game. The more serious tone has been completely abandoned for stupid kiddie humor and bland characters with absolutely no development. The whole community is filled with idiots who want furries and ponies and random they find online. The quality of game was sacrificed for slightly improved graphics in a boring, static city with no exploration allowed. The worst part is that there is genuinely no content. Once you beat the missions, clear the activities, and get the collectibles, you're done. The activities are so short, I have 100% control of the city before the story even ends.

Saints Row 3 is a bastardization of the previous two Saints Row games. The worst part is, this game is a pile of rubbish BEFORE the season pass bull**** I can only hope this was a product of mismanagement at THQ, and that Volition will do better in the future like we know they can. Oh wait, the same problems are happening under new management.

While some think it taking place in the same city as the previous game is a bad idea, I think it was the right idea. It gave them more time and resources to spend on other aspects of the game.

They really nailed the effects and shaders, and used them to their advantage. Whether it's the "loading" in of the virtual world, the very subtle pixelation of random characters and objects, or the almost VHS like flicker you can notice buildings have when you look closely at them. It gives off a feeling of being in a simulated world, without shoving it in your face 24/7. Only when it is crucial to the plot will they make it completely obvious, and over the top. It's stuff like this that really makes the game feel polished.

While many of the mission types from 'Saints Row: The Third' did get carried over into 'Saints Row IV', They also added some new, completely different missions. Especially in the main story. There were many times while playing through the main story that I had nearly forgotten that I was playing one game, and not an amalgam of three or four different games blended seamlessly together.

I have to admit, I was a little worried that it might just turn out as an expensive, standalone DLC for the previous game. However, I loved what I saw in the trailers and liked the previous game, so I trusted them. That trust paid off. There was not a single part in the main story where I knew what was going to happen next. It was well written, unique, and enthralling. You identify with both the protagonist (your character) and the antagonist. Some parts made me mad, some made me sad. Mostly, it made me laugh.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone that liked 'Saints Row: The Third' for its absurdity, hilarious character dialogue, ridiculous plot twists, and unique gameplay.

I would not recommend it to anyone who is expecting it to be a serious, more realistic game, not unlike the Grand Theft Auto series. That's just not what The Third Street Saints are about.

I would even go so far as to say that this game does better than any super hero game that has ever been done, and its not even about a mainstream superhero. This game has its moments, and as a fan of the series watching saints row progress more and more into madness was well worth the trip. If you want to play a serious shoot em' up gangster game, than that is what GTA is for and by the looks of it GTA5 is going to be stellar. But if you just want to blow up stuff in creative and new ways and have fun, this is the game for you.

Now there are some downsides to this game. 2 in particular which I will mention that stood out to me. The first is the fact that super powers almost eliminate the use of cars and car customization. This is something the game designers spent a lot of time to improve on and its almost completely rendered useless with the ability to run faster than any car. They should have held off the super powers until later in the game. The second thing is the repetitiveness of the side missions. The side missions were just completing activities around town and it became very boring doing them over and over again.

Over all, with the games downsides and crashing 2 times on me, coupled with everything we love about volition's stellar series made the game totally worth it. I would say this is a must buy and play for anyone into sandbox games, and was a good play all the way through despite being repetitive at times

The game was funny and... uhm... different (10), maybe a bit repetitive on secondary missions (-1).
Maybe too much a matrix clone, but not that bad.
I won't spoiler, but i got a bit disappointed at the end, seems like an empty ending, like saying "well, this is it".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all I will say that this game is probably enjoyable for people that didn't play SR3.

    I am, however, quite disappointed.
By trying to go even more over the top than Saints Row: The Third, they nearly ruined everything.

I will now list all the good and the bad things I found most noteworthy.

    Good:
-They improved the engine a lot from SR3, it looks better and runs a lot smoother
-The new characters are interesting, especially Benjamin King
-The voice actors are superb and bring the characters to life, the dialogues are snippy and often good for a chuckle
-First mission is hands down one of the most awesome ways to open a video game. I mean, riding a intercontinental missile while disarming the nuke, landing in the president's chair, what do you want more
-First 2-3 hours were quite fun, as you always got new toys to play with, discovering new things, etc.
-some of the new weapons are quite cool, like the an*l probe and the blackhole launcher

Bad things: (in no particular order of badness)
-the game consists of 70% Saints Row: The Third, some activities have new wrappings, but they're still the same old inside
-the remaining 30% are: 20% Matrix (the movies), 5% other video games/movies/pop culture and 5% original content I hope for Deep Silver that they got permission to use exact soundfiles from Metal Gear Solid)
-they chose near-maximum movement distance between every (step of a) mission. I spent about 40% of my total playtime just running around to go to the next mission
-while all the new stuff you get is all fun the first few times, it gets old really fast, using abilities, doing activities becomes extremely repetitive after a few hours, so I couldn't bear with it anymore and did the main storyline and the loyalty missions
-the missions themselves also become very repetitive very fast
-the first 4 powers that you get kinda get your hopes up that the remaining 4 will be as awesome, but they are all really lame in comparison
-the story makes absolutely no sense at all. Don't even try to make sense of it, it's not possible.
-the highly advertised "romance" features, from which I hoped they would be like in rpg games like mass effect or the witcher, are just: press R for sex, that's it, from the first time you meet a character
-they seem to have taken BOTH endings from SR3. Shaundi is alive and there is nothing to be seen from Killbane. They were mutually exclusive in case you can't remember
-one of the cool things to do in SR3 was tuning cars, since you could adjust colors, etc, very well. It's still there, but after 30 minutes of gameplay you won't ever use a car again, unless forced to.
-difficulty is extremely low, I did not die a single time on hard mode
-the playtime is ridiculously short, I finished in 11h 21m with 74% completion
-the ending creates an unstable time loop
-collecting the 1155 (no typo, one thousand one hundred fifty-five) collectibles some audio tapes) gets boring extremely fast, they're not even hidden at all, you can see them from hundreds of metres away since they glow-- absolutely no motivation to get them all, and I usually 100% all my games
-THE most annoying thing for me: The mini "bosses" aka everything that has a shield.
After you take down the shield with a power, you get a measly 3 seconds to damage the boss.
The bosses have a huge amount of health, leading to very drawn out, yet unchallenging fights.
As if that wasn't enough, they can easily stunlock you with their telekinetic throw, even if you press space to recover in midair.
-knowing the style of SR3, there were almost no surprises. In every situation you know what will happen, because you know how things roll with the Saints.

That's a sign of a good game in my book.

If you want reality and no super powers, go pick up one of the thousands of "be a soldier" games, or dig out the GTA series. This isn't them. It has super powers, it's not meant to be realistic. It's just meant to be fun. It succeeds.

    Saint’s Row 4 is a GTA-themed sci-fi superhero sandbox game.

    Yes, really.

Chock full of pop-culture references, jokes, crude humor, parodies of other intellectual properties, and general silliness, this game is a farce wrapped up in a superhero sandbox/sci-fi/GTA theme. The game does not take itself seriously at all, and yet, has remarkably high production values; the characters are fully voice acted, Keith David is your vice president, and you can eventually recruit Santa and Mrs. Claus as sidekicks.

The main attraction of this game is its over the top ridiculousness. The game starts out with your character breaking into a nuclear weapons facility to stop an insane general from launching a nuclear weapon and destroying Washington DC, and it only goes downhill from there. The protagonist is a sociopathic street-thug-cum-actor-cum-politician, who puts his ex-street thug friends in charge of the country.

And that’s just the first chapter. After that, aliens invade, everyone gets abducted and stuck into simulations of their worst nightmares – the protagonist gets stuck in a cheerful 50s-themed world – and eventually the protagonist breaks out, breaks into a GTA-themed simulation, and then frees all his friends from similarly ridiculous nightmare scenarios based on everything from fighting a gigantic can of soda to a 2D-beat-em-up to an old-school wireframe video game world. The protagonist gains superpowers over the course of the game, allowing him to completely turn the GTA-themed sandbox on its head, largely ignoring vehicles in favor of running around with super-speed and super-jumps and super-gliding, running up the sides of buildings and bouncing around the city.

The actual gameplay itself is often fairly mediocre; it mostly plays like an over-the-shoulder 3rd person shooter. And yet, the sheer ridiculousness of the scenarios, the constant comedic banter between the protagonist, his teammates, and the enemy, and the general lack of the game taking itself seriously somehow combine to make the game a generally enjoyable experience. The game is at its worst when you are slogging your way through waves of rather uninteresting enemies, but fortunately the protagonist is generally so overpowered after a while that apart from a few missions where you have limited weapons, you can pretty much crush them easily. The actual sandbox aspect of the game is fairly weak; there are a bunch of missions which more or less serve as practice for various bits of the game, as well as challenges which push your ability to complete tasks with various superpowers or weapons or vehicles to the limit, but on the whole most of these are fairly inoffensive, and they aren’t repetitive enough to be annoying.

    So, is it good?

I’d say on the whole that it was an enjoyable experience; while the gameplay may not have been the best, the sheer chutzpah of the game actually made it pretty fun, and you never knew what ridiculous task you’d be up to next. The game does its best to make you feel powerful, and the game is, in the end, a power fantasy, an ego trip, and a comedy all wrapped up into one. It doesn’t take itself seriously, and neither should you, but on the whole, it was well worth it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just to make things clear, I want to point out that I wasn't a huge fun of Saint's Row The Third, even more so, I hated it. I didn't liked what Volition did with Saint's Row franchise. Even though i didn't like previous installment of SR, I have decided to pick up this game and review it.

I wasn't expecting gangster-type Saint's Row when I bought this but I had a big expectations from this game and I have got to say I wasn't disappointed. Firstly, you start the game as a president of the United States which is a clever idea and it got me thinking, what are they going to come up with next year, will you be playing as God? anyway let's get to the point. You start the game as a president and of course Aliens invaded the Earth and then destroyed it, yes, you read this well, Aliens have destroyed our planet, just like that. Only some gang members have survived including, Pierce, Shaundi, Johny Gat and others, so now it is your mission to get out of the simulation and defeat Zinyak( Leader of the Aliens).

For some reason Zinyak, doesn't want to kill you, in fact he transforms you into this simulation(clear spoof of Matrix) and what is funny is the fact that he allows you to have superpowers and i have got to say superpowers are the most fun thing to have in the game. Instead of travelling by car you can just run around or fly around which is extremely convenient and fun but there are also some problems that I have with them. If you have ability to fly and super sprint through the town you won't be using cars, AT ALL which is a shame because the developers have improved vehicle customization and with your superpowers these improved aspects of customization are useless.

Let's get to the story, I actually really liked it. It was funny, full of sexual jokes and some great references from the other Saint's Row games. Even at one point you get to visit Stillwater and fight some bosses from previous games. Although I did had some problems with side missions, some of them were ok, especially the Super Homie missions, but others were repetitive, ''go to point a, fight some aliens and then go to point B'' type of missions but I had to complete them because I really wanted to get my hands on Dubstep Gun, Black Hole Gun and other really hilarious ones. As for the story, I don't want to spoil anything but I really hated the last boss fight with Zinyak. It was cheap and frustrating, I expected something more... fun I might say but overall the story was hilarious.

Furthermore, I did had some fun playing minigames although some of them weren't as good as other. In my opinion the best minigames are Insurance Fraud(of course) and Mech Mayhem. Text Adventures were fun as well. Other minigames were...well...acceptable.

Lastly, Saint's Row 4 offers us a decent but hilarious story, good character customization and of course superpowers. You will definitely have a lot of fun with this game especially if you could convince your friend to play it with you. But I'm a bit sad that the car customization is pretty much useless just because your superpowers, It would be better if the developers gave you the superpowers after you finish the game or after 50% completion, but this is just my opinion. Besides, If you didn't liked the previous Saint's Row, you should really give it a try and If you are a huge fan of Saint's Row 1 and 2, you might be a bit disappointed by the lack of seriousness.

    But I was wrong.

Saints Row IV manages to beat the Third in almost every domain. The jokes are way more clever, the story is much stronger and the good radio stations are back with an incredibly good soundtrack. The universe they built here allowed the developers to be really creative with the activities, level design, weapons and storyline.

I was afraid of what they were going to do with this "simulation", but they managed to create pretty funny situations and throwbacks at Saints 2 and the Third.

On the downside, your homies don't feel as charismatic as they were, and we're still a few steps away from Saints Row 2's quality storytelling. And with a universe this huge and varied, you will eventually have a game crash and/or a few glitches in-game. Some activities can also become tedious pretty quickly cough*hacking*cough.

To conclude, this game is just too much fun to pass on, especially if you're a Saints fan. Whether you enjoyed the second or the third game better, you are sure to have a LOT of fun playing this adrenaline-boosted, over-the-top, all-guns-blazing adventure Volition did a really great job with that fourth episode.

Of corse there are glitches, but they are just too funny, and by the course of the game, you will notice they are there because the creator wants it.
The aliens, the enemy gangs of old steelport, everything, that brings even Johnny Gat is back, so, as you can see, there is nothing bad abaut this game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Generally enjoyable, but despite the superhero theme, mechanically if felt like a retread of Saints Row III. The story also felt like an excuse to string together a bunch of missions that would have been side missions in previous Saints Row games. I kept waiting for a twist or dramatic reveal at the end, which never really happened. I realise people don't play Saints Row III and IV for the plot, but they could have done something better,

In addition I really missed the radio stations that were cut. This is the first Saints Row game I played with the music off. I really enjoyed hijacking a car in the previous games and listening to a random stations. With the limited stations with limited music, that's no fun any more. Also I really didn't like the changes to the interface, I really thought that Saints Row 3 in particular had a brilliant thing going with the smart phone interface to the game menus.

Overall, good mindless fun, but if you want that, IMHO, you are might as well get Saints Row III. If you enjoyed the other saints row games, you might as well get it, but If you are new, get Saints Row III.

It's a game perfectly capable of standing on it's own, which is also why this could not be a DLC; the story line is too long, there are too many abilities and too much time and power put into making this game that it could be justified as a DLC.

SR 4 isn't really a sequel to the series at all. It's really just SR 3 with a map reskin and some "matrix assassins creed" style story elements bolted on, with superpowers, which are very "marmite" in appeal. It's the same engine, same map, slightly expanded range of vehicles and clothes and that's about it.

Considering it looks like it is nothing more than a reskin with a few extra bits, it does suffer from more than its fair share of launch day bugs. You'll want to backup your saves (as they get corrupted on pc a lot) and save often having a superpower ram you "inside" a building mesh unable to escape is pretty sucky, and being as the games all about the super powers, it's going to happen a lot insert gripe about lazy coding, and not validating your meshes properly here) There's also a known problem where having a poor frame rate can actually prevent players from completing one of the very early missions (google for discussions on the mission "The Real World" if you need to look it up or have any concerns.) Fortunately with my rig, I wasnt affected, but I can only imagine how much it must suck to have to deliberately stick a game like this, with a 3-4 yr old engine (if not older) in to "low detail" mode just to complete a section..

For new players to the series, check out SR2 (generally regarded by most as the one with the better plot) or SR3 (negligable plot, muchy more "silly" but at present far larger and more "realistic") first. For undecided players returning to the franchise, avoid if you hated SR3, or wait till its on special if you liked it, as it's really not big enough to qualify for most as a full game.

After condemning THQ for a lot of decisions regarding DLC, Deep Silver/Volition have hypocritically launched with a zero day DLC pack, and a pay to use cheat pack, which seems to indicate they plan on using SR4 as another vehicle for making an easy buck on DLC.

There is also an issue regarding censorship of the Australian version. In DS/V's defence, this was a decision made to actually permit them to release the game in that territory, as Aus law's would have prevented its publication there with some of its content left untouched, but I'll leave the debate on that one to the extensive community groups already discussing it.

Players will also find that a couple of much loved characters will not show up... apparently silently removed from the franchise as DS/V had felt pressured by THQ in SR3 to work with a former porn star as a voice acting talent, who, now THQ are no more, DS/V have decided to ditch rather than recast.

Another issue is that the dev's have stated that SR5 is in the pipeline and going to be very different to the current storyline you've experienced from SR3 and into SR4, which, without wanting to spoiler alert you, does draw to a conclusion. Given the recycled engine and assets, and the fact that SR4 was originally built to be nothing more than an SR3 expansion pack anyway, you can't help but feel that SR4 was just a hastily cobbled together "filler" for the series whilst they work on the real "new" title, SR5.

The biggest issue for me though, which has really impeded my enjoyment, even beyond reloading saves to escape dodgy building meshes, was the apparent decision to drop the russian accented voice acting on the default "Female 2" voice and replace it with a french voice actor instead.

I know its not a big thing, but I loved playing a female psychotic russian mass murderer in the earlier games, and feel like the new french voice was tacked on as some kind of "we need to have a generic foreign sounding voice in there somewhere"

Despite all that, as I said, I'm enjoying it more than enough to stick with it. Running up walls is cool, even if the game over uses it, and grants it way too early. The new stuff is fun to play around with, and whilst we have lost all the old gang rivalries that drove the previous titles, it is kind of fun to have a generic bad guy to hand the smack down to over and over again. I just wish it didn't feel so much like SR3 with cheat mode enabled.

If there was one thing that I found to be not quite excellent, it was the having to harvest the nodes to improve your superpowers. In a game that's always been all about balls to the walls fun, this aspect seemed like nothing more than a boring grind, especially since the damn things were on every other rooftop, which almost compels you to grind them, whereas if they had been a lot rarer, it might have been something obtained a lot more organically while playing the game.

The voice acting was excellent, again. I play the female version, and Laura Bailey continues to nail everything without overacting. I know Jennifer Hale gets all the voice actress press due to her high profile with the Bioware games, but I've always thought Laura Bailey to be the best voice actress in the business (I think Hale tends to overact-ie: female Shepard, but is great when she doesn't feel like she has to).

The only other downer is that, as far as I know, this was the last of the franchise. I do hope we see someone else make a quality game that is obviously having a lot of fun with itself in the future. So many games take themselves super seriously (not that there's anything wrong with that), and it's nice to play a AAA game that doesn't (and doesn't suck as a result).

If they would've focused on creating a better multiplayer experience, they would of had much better critical acclaim. That and the combat is sort of bland.. Sure there's some funny weapons, but Sleeping Dogs to me is the runner up to the GTA series as far as the contemporary single player open world experience genre is concerned.

Don't believe the hype about this game.

The vast majority of the assets in this game are recycled from Saints Row 3. I bought this thinking that "only" the city was recycled. I had no idea that the character models would be identical (including the customization options!), planes and cars would just be reskinned versions of SR3 vehicles (interesting that UFOs fly just like SR3 VTOLs),

I had no idea that the character models would be identical (including the customization options!), planes and cars would just be reskinned versions of SR3 vehicles (interesting that UFOs fly just like SR3 VTOLs), and even many of the guns are just reskinned versions of their SR3 counterparts. The developers also recycled some SR3 concepts that have no purpose in SR4 (such as gang design or car customization). Heck, even the clothes/outfits are straight from Saints Row 3.

The gameplay is disappointing as well. The main story missions are short the vast majority of your time will be spent doing side missions. Most of these side missions are literally just "go to x location across the city and do some minigame you've already done 10 times before". Its worth mentioning that most of the minigames are recycled from SR3.

Another big problem is the complete lack of CHALLENGE in this game. The superpowers make everything so unbalanced in your favor, even on hardcore mode. The poor enemy AI makes this even worse the "wardens", who are supposed to act like mini-bosses in the game, will often jump around aimlessly and never attack if you stand on top of a building.

Of course, the saving grace for the SR series has always been the tongue-in-cheek humor. Sadly, that's not the case with this game. This game feels like it was written for teenagers who speak in Internet memes and enjoy Seth McFarlane comedies, the type of people who think anything random and "edgy" is automatically funny. Saying that this game is just "over the top" and that it "doesn't take itself too seriously" is a disservice to games that manage to be genuinely funny without being idiotic (Saints Row 2, anyone?).

As for plot, there is none. If they writers wanted to make the plot crazy and insane, they should've still ensured that it was internally coherent. Quite a few of the missions start with Kinsie telling you some nonsense about alien technology, which segues into her telling you to do something that will disrupt the aforementioned technology even though there is no clear reason why. Apparently jumping in front of cars for insurance money will help disrupt an alien simulation. The game also ironically points out its out plot flaws quite a bit, as though being up-front about it would lessen the criticism (I guess they were right in this regard).

Do not buy this game. It should've been a $20 expansion pack or DLC, though even if it were I would still recommend everyone to stay away.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I bought SR4 yesterday and i just finished it and im giving everyone a warning, do not buy this game it is just a overpriced DLC for SR3! Let me tell you the top ten reason why this game is not worth your money
It was planned to be just a DLC for SR3 and you can tell they did not add many things after changing the plans.
The super powers you have in this game you could get from buying a DLC in SR3!
No work whatsoever on the graphics.
There is lot's of annoying bugs in the game
You don't get any choices after the intro!
The story is average at best and tries to be something it's not
The ending is just awful and feels rushed out, well the whole game feels rushed out.
It's the exact same city you where in the last game except some buildings are gone and there is a giant space ship floating in the sky.
Beacuse of the super powers that you have cars are now useless.
The worst part of all is the godamn price, would you pay 50$ for a DLC? Probably not so why would you buy this game!? and oh yo dawg i got DLC for your DLC!
If you don't have a lot of money like me you should wait for a good game like GTA V!

The writing in this game is great, though some of the reference jokes are overdone. There also doesn't seem to be as great of character interaction in this as in the previous games.

The weapons are more or less the same with some extra fun ones in the mix, such as the infamous "Dubstep gun". Though while in the previous games, you'd find a time to use each of your weapons, this game you easily find yourself ignoring the weaker firearms.

All of these downsides are tied to the big feature/setting of the game: You're in a simulated reality and have superpowers. Everything else that makes the game Saints Row takes a backseat to this, and shifts the game more from GTA to Prototype. Your super speed and jumping powers have you questioning why you would carjack anybody. Your offensive powers take a big role in your path of destruction, with a lot of your explosive/special weapons not requiring ammo and just use them in place of your conventional firearms.
No mistake, it's fun, but it sacrifices the original fun of Saints Row in the process. I don't like the concept of being in a personal Matrix. I don't like doing missions by myself just because my crew mates aren't using hacks to be in god-mode. I don't like forcing myself to use a SMG because I'm getting tired of instantly killing everything with a absurd artillery piece made out of 5 other absurd artillery pieces.

In the end, it's about the challenge. Saints Row had never been stellar in this department, but super powers have basically knocked down any difficulty choice you make to "I can freeze and shatter everybody on this city block". The game isn't about fighting to overcome a powerful obstacle, it's about being the powerful obstacle that has no equal.

Again, make no mistake, the game is fun, like a game should be. You just might want to hold off on this if you were hoping for the goofy GTA clone you're used to.

As you work to destabilize your personal digital hell, you'll see more messed up game models, more pixelization effects and more unstable textures on walls. Complaints-wise is the game feels a bit rough at times. The kind of roughness that usually goes away after a patch or two. Dialogs sometime stop abruptly (not really mid-sentence, but leaving you wondering if there should have been more) and the plot jumps around a bit without smooth cinematic transition. I've also had the occasional crash. Gameplay wise, I wish they didn't give you the super running and jumping as early as they do since it totally makes the vehicular gameplay a moot point; but at least it's still an option. Also it would be nice to be able to toggle some abilities on or off like the Running Tornado which can sometimes be more trouble than it's worth. Overall though, it's a LOT of content and a LOT of fun. I loved SR3 and I love SR4 just as much. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed murderbrawling through the former. Expand

I was especially interested in how the main character became President of the United States. This is something that was never explained in the game. Becoming President seems a little out of place for "Boss" (based on previous games) and I wanted to know what drove the character to make such a move. The game plays like it's predecessor with a weird mix of The Matrix, Infamous/Prototype, and Mass Effect. Most of the action takes place in a Matrix-like simulation which in-turn gives the players superpowers and free roaming ability of Infamous/Prototype. Since there are no safe houses, you interact with your crew on a spaceship and do loyalty missions for them (you can also "romance" them) which is borrowed from the Mass Effect series. Gone are the street gangs battling for turf of Steelport and this was a bit of a let down for me. I liked the gang action/battles of the previous games. While using superpowers, you will rarely find yourself using a car or any other means of transportation to navigate Steelport which has virtually been unchanged from the previous game. What makes this game great is the over the top action but still leaves you wanting more of what the previous games had to offer. When you are in the Matrix-like simulation you have access to four different core powers (which then branches off into other powers). When you do missions out of the simulation, the superpowers are removed although some missions still take place in a simulation (which makes no sense). Long time fans will especially enjoy ONE mission where you revisit Steelwater and you have to deal with old rivals The Vice Kings. This game has DEFINITELY set itself apart from Grand Theft Auto so now the two franchises are worlds apart (literally). Saints Row IV plays more like an extended DLC pack than a standalone game. I've been playing indie games a lot lately rather than mainstream games. You may wonder why that is, but I have a very good reason for wanting to do so. The simplest truth is that I find indie developers to be better at making video games than mainstream developers, mostly because mainstream developers don't actually make video games most of the time.

What do they make? Well, from my experience, I'd say their stock in trade is exercises in tedium, boring person simulators, and desaturated uncanny valley simulators. I look at something like Assassin's Creed or Grand Theft Auto and I'm given pause, I have to ask myself where the fun is in those games, because there really isn't any. The other day I realised that I had more fun playing Kerbal Space Program, because at least there's an element of the fantastic to that, there's a degree of imagination involved.

Whereas something like Grand Theft Auto IV has a fetish for reality, it cares more about believable hydraulics than having fun. If I wanted believable hydraulics, I'd go and take a drive in my car. What I want from a video game is something that feels more arcadey and fun, something detached from reality, something that genuinely makes me feel good when I play it because of the aforementioned fun factor. So, what am I doing in Grand Theft Auto IV? I'm driving my brother around to go to a strip joint, or bowling, or to play darts. I could do these things myself, so why am I doing them in a video game again? Are people really so stagnant that they find entertainment in this?

Even Assassin's Creed is limited by its attachment to historical accuracy, so often you'll have to sit through long and not at all engaging cutscenes before you can... uh, have the game play itself, because requiring skill is dangerous, it might upset the player. See, I'm not against cutscenes, if they were interesting and well written I could sit through them. But let's be honest, gaming is hardly Pan's Labyrinth, and most of the writers are bloody awful (Obsidian hoards the good ones, I think), so making me sit through cutscenes that make me cringe? That's not fun. I don't want that. They can keep that.

And again, I like parkour, but I like having some say in whether I fail. Assassin's Creed is so easy that I could play it in my sleep. So having jumping puzzles in that game is worthless. And therein lies the issue, there's nothing which actually challenges the player on any level, but worse, there's no fun to be had. If you were having fun, at least, then it wouldn't matter.

See, this is why I like proper video games. I do like games. And I mean video games. You know? Recently, I've enjoyed Megabyte Punch and Beatbuddy because they're both proper video games. It's what I prefer to play. They have no pretensions about huge, involving stories, which is good, because only a few developers (Obsidian, and sometimes BioWare on a good day) can actually deliver. They concentrate on what was always fun about video games: The game itself. They make the game fun to play. They make it an enthralling visual feast of colour and sound, they have tight controls, and the end result is incredibly enjoyable.

So, what is the mainstream, to me? An exercise in soporific dullness backed up by bad writing and massively desaturated colour palettes (because colour is bad, it might scare people). I must have missed the memo that told humanity that we were now soulless, brain-drained accountants, with no love for creativity, novelty, or innovation.

If the mainstream represents the 'fantasies' of people today, then by golly, people are stagnantly boring.

So, what does any of this have to do with Saints Row IV? SR IV is a mutant. It's a mainstream game. I'm not entirely sure how that happened, really. But there it is. It's ridiculous, over-the-top, colourful, and it possesses that rarest of qualities which so many games are absent of of late: FUN. It's really very fun. So, I'm a werewolf in a suit with a powertie using superpowers to climb a jumping puzzle-laden sci-fi monument one moment, and the next I'm escaping from an alien mothership to the tune of "What is Love?" And then, then I'm using telekinesis to throw people and vehicles through coloured hoops in a faux gameshow.

    It's really fun.

But more than that? More than that? It's a game. It's a video game. It's the real deal. It's just a video game.

And that's the best praise I could give to Saints Row IV. It's not an exercise in tedium, it's not a boring person simulator, it's not an accountant's most slate-coloured and plebeian fantasy... it's not any of those things. It's a game. It is a game that you will have fun playing. Unless you're a very boring person, in which case you won't. But hey, no worries, Assassin's Creed and Grand Theft Auto await to fulfill your entirely too mundane desires.

For people like myself, there's Saints Row IV.

Volition, you are too kind to me, and to any other person out there with an interest in video games.

This was short, shallow and felt like SRIII DLC.

The world was shallow and depressing (a la The Matrix), the music was genuinely bad and there was ZERO end game. The days don't pass and it's always dark. You can do something about that later, but not automatically. Even while playing the campaign I felt alone; your associates are made of paper and lack the personality and humour

Even while playing the campaign I felt alone; your associates are made of paper and lack the personality and humour they had in III. At one point you and your associate get into a discussion over an actual plot hole the writers thought it'd be cute to acknowledge the plot hole, make a joke of it and steamroll it rather than fix it. How insulting like I'd just pay for DLC and not care anyway because I'm too stupid. After all, all a blind consumer needs is someone to kill and something shiny to kill them with.

I really felt as though this were less a game and more an interface for DLC. They just made this game so they could sell me some imaginary clothes and cars for real money. I mean, that's quite often the case but you really FEEL it here- there's no attempt to finesse it, no effort put into earning it.

Time wasted on this "game" is time better spent learning something new or improving a real world skill. This pissed me off.

The first time I played this game only one word came in my mind OMG!!!
This game has became more fun more awesome..... NO game can be compared with saints row series...
It's a game for free roam lovers.... and with super powers it's more fun and interesting.... Yet it has taken references from games like prototype and hulk... but the fact is they aren't even a match for SAINTS ROW IV.

Saint's Row IV. Many words can describe this game but only one rings true for it's entirety. Stupid. Now stupid may be an ugly word, but in the context I am using it, it means complete and utter brilliance. Volition know they're game isn't serious, and they embrace it. The aliens, the weapons, the Nolan North voice option, all of these factor into the game's complete self criticism. It's as if Volition said "Saint's Row is stupid, lets make it even more stupid" and it worked brilliantly.

Enough praise for now, let's get to the game itself. Saint's Row has undoubtedly improved itself since it's last outing. The Third was by no means a bad game, but Saint's Row IV improves upon it astronomically. More guns, more vehicles, more mini-games, more stupidity and who could forget the super powers, which are the most interesting part of this new game. The game play has been significantly improved and made more challenging, the player now has to collect Unreal style health pick-ups seeing as the health regeneration feature has been reduced greatly. This adds an extra layer depth to the previously simple fighting mechanic, it also makes it's game play so much more intense than games like Call of Duty or GTA V. The new blast mechanics force the player to strategize, balancing their now limited health and usually taking on five or more enemies at once can be a real challenge so when you see your freeze blast recharge fully you'll breathe a sigh of relief and shatter some New mini games have been introduced, along with an Olympic medal style ranking system which encourages player to replay until they earn gold.

But the main, crowning feature of this game, are it's superpowers. Not just the powers themselves but the nooks and crannies that come with aforementioned powers. The world now has much more verticality, collectibles are on the 22nd story of a building or in between massive industrial chimneys. A massive new upgrade tree, along with the Saint's standard upgrade tree seen in every game. With each data cluster, the player is that little bit closer to unlocking a desired superpower or additional element for their blast power. Finally, it's plain and simple fun just to fly around the city of Steelport.

The narrative side is where this game has completely overdone the stupid. Aliens attack and the Saints are the only thing that can stop them. A lowly gang of gangbanger/celebrities/politicians etc etc, are now tasked with the protection of the human race. Sounds completely ridiculous, well that's because it is. It's also the most entertainment I've had since, well, Saint's Row 2. The characters are over the top, the jokes are at times subtle or extremely distasteful and in your face, but always make you laugh. To be frank, this game perfects what gaming should be. It's cut all ties to reality and sanity, it's taken the "Who the Hell wants to plays a game for realism" approach. This game makes you feel like a complete badass, and there's nothing wrong with that. The writing is witty and would make any middle aged man chuckle with glee thanks to an absolute tonne of 80s references (play thermonuclear war). At the same time, any immature little brat like myself would find most jokes hilarious. This game isn't afraid to outright steal from other games, fans of Mass Effect might notice a certain cameo appearance and even a wannabe Normandy, inFamous and Prototype fans will definitely see some obvious similarities. But it's all done with self awareness, Volition knew what they were doing, and even went so far as to extend the reach of their plagiarism. It is perfection.

Issues include some shoddy graphics as the game is still running on an older engine, but anyone who buys a game for graphics is as bad as someone buying a book for its cover. There are glitches, but they were relatively small and easy enough to handle. Some of the flying is hard to control when playing on PC, but works wonderfully with a controller.

In the end, Saint's Row IV is worth your money, time and effort. It's unparalleled obscurity and stupidity are only starting points for why you should play this game. It is an unforgettable experience, in the best way.

There is none of that in this game. PLAY 3 FIRST, then get this game later on the cheap. Expand

A disgrace to gaming... I see this as no more than a big DLC for saints row 3, using a few of their previous games.

You can count the new content in game, if you sort away the weapons, on your fingers... I mean, come on. That, and the price did not have anything to do with the amount of content. I feel cheated more than anything else...

Finished storyline and all side quests within 15 hours, so a little shorter than you might expect but it's longer than Saints Row 3's story was for me. The super power system is extremely streamlined and I enjoyed the return of challenges to unlock special abilities both for your character and your super powers. Though I came into several game breaking bugs makes me thing this was rushed through QA to the point where they didn't even watch their own credits sequence http://imgur.com/uP4oEqZ But overall was a fun experience with a half decent storyline I would recommend to friends.

This game actually managed to be worse than Saints Row 3. Same stupidly degenerate humor, same bland and empty city. The plot is a terrible ripoff of the Matrix with some of the most loathe some and simple writing seen in a video game to date, it almost rivals the stupidity of Far Cry 3's writing and plot, it's that bad.

I thankfully didn't pay money to play this garbage, as it was free

I thankfully didn't pay money to play this garbage, as it was free on Steam. If I had I would probably have to jump in front of a train to mend the dishonor and regret I bestowed on myself.

The game is terrible, cheap and lazy. And it shows.

The fourth part in the Saints Row saga is an outrageous, silly and incredibly entertaining adventure. The days of Grand Theft Auto is since long gone and the game reminds you rather of the super hero games Crackdown and Infamous. An unexpected but welcome change.
