A LOT of people will be mad at this game. It is completely different from all of the ones before it, and it really shares little with the previous games in the series. If you didn't like SR 3 due to the sci-fi and super hero aspects, you might hate this game... a lot. If you're looking for something in the realistic criminal vein (ala Grand Theft Auto), you might hate this game.

The changes here are immense. It's like being in a mish-mash of every science fiction movie out there, with lots of elements/ideas coming straight from the Matrix.

Before you buy, check out some of the YouTube gameplay videos and make sure you're not going to hate it. If you go into this with the wrong expectations, you're going to be very disappointed.

I find the storyline to be quite entertaining as well to go along with the sandbox gameplay in general. I can see myself playing this game for hours on end even after completing the storyline and/or the 100% completion. It was a good investment I made & even bought the season pass already. Take it from someone who has played Saints Row from the very beginning, you will not be disappointed if you get SR4. Expand

There is only one word that can describe this game. FUN! This is all that matters! This game has been drastically improved over its predecessor(s). Quit whining about how this game is the same as the previous game! Whose problem is it if you didn't read the reviews which specifically warned you about it before you've purchased the game? Absolutely yours.

I understand that everyone wanted the same old SR and they're pissed that it's different. I personally think it's one of the best video games ever developed. I think in some ways it blows GTA out of the water entirely. You'll have to play it though.

It's adult humor, non-stop one liners, and extreme action makes for a really enjoyable experience. I'll have to play more to really give an in depth analysis. The story is actually good, the gameplay is a blast, and the it looks and sounds great. It's definitely a unique experience that's for sure, and one that I am enjoying a great deal. All the "over the top" action and Saints styling I have grown to love. With a huge helping of Sci-Fi, and love, and lust, and blowing crap up, and laying the smack down is full on superhero fashion.

Like others suggest, check the game out before you buy if you're worried about not liking it. And for the love of Pete, don't take it so serious! Sit back and enjoy the ride!

Money well spent in my humble opinion.

The gameplay itself is pretty solid. There are very few bugs despite the game being a physics sandbox with superpowers. The game does get a little too easy once you're sufficiently upgraded.
The only downside is that, while developpers actually made an effort to make secondary objectives seem important and fun (finally), it has made the main quest suffer from it and has made it very short as a result. I finished the game in 20 hours and did all the secondary objectives, I think it would take a little under 10 hours to finish the main quest, which is a bit short for this type of game.

Good if you're a long time fan of the series and don't mind a very wacky atmosphere.

Some of it is cheeseball such as after mission screens where your character is doing really foolish moves and some missions are a lot easier than others. I've been playing off and on for about a month with 25 hours into it and I'm 25% complete. So unless you hit it really hard you won't sail through this game. There are tricks to doing that like loading an apache type helicopter for each mission. The aliens just get devestated. My opinion:

Yes, this iteration of Saints Row doesn't really innovate quite as much as the others did, but you know, it's still ridiculously fun, especially for something that almost didn't get created in the first place.

Yes, portions of this were originally slated to be DLC for SR3, but the released product goes beyond that.

Yes, portions of the game get repetitive (namely the non-story related missions), but I found that true for SR3 and *gasp* SR2 (which seems to be the Holy Grail for several of the people making negative comments).

The story itself is actually pretty enjoyable (if not flat out ridiculous), and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. That said, I *did* pre-order it and get it for around $40; I don't know that it's worth $50, and definitely not $60, but I've yet to see it for over $50 on Steam. I'm also convinced that anyone giving this a 0 either a) didn't bother playing the game for more than 10 minutes before reviewing it or b) is blatant troll-baiting.

Saints Row IV adds more than you think it does. The gameplay is Saints Row: The Third's but improved upon to include super powers. The story is much more better than SR3 as it has a full on plot instead of just wacky funny stuff that adds up for a story. The story ties up many loose ends in the series, bringing back old characters like Tanya Winters, Veteran Child, Maero and Julius. There are a lot of hilarious references and parodies that the writers created in this game, such as using a typical Call of Duty breach and clear on the first mission, and Metal Gear Solid's stealth gameplay during a rescue mission.

The game is by far a blast to play even alone, doing missions, side quests, activities, and collecting all of the audio logs and clusters, you can just roam around the world for nearly hours.

If you liked Saints Row: The Third, you will love Saints Row IV.

Despite all that, lets just get it out of the way: I had tons of fun playing the game.
The Saints Row crew really know how to deliver their story and make things feel epic when they want to. The Matrix theme opened up a lot of opportunities to explore things I have never seen done with a game, and it all felt really good. Being as skeptical as I was coming in, it took me a few hours into the game to decide I was actually really having fun and then became genuinely immersed in the game. The oldschool game puns are hilarious.
Now, the game did have a few flaws; Superpowers require practice and some upgrading before they feel fluid; Distractions and other optional tasks such as takeovers, Professor Genki missions, races, or other challenges are now connected with sidequests, meaning if you stop completing missions to do optional tasks in the world, you will get ahead of objectives and could miss out on some character and mission dialogue, if that is even important to you; But the biggest thing I could complain about is the amount of content for the price. I beat the game at 40 hours and am nearly at 100% completion. I bled the game dry. There is replay value here but if I could have squeezed 10 more hours out of gameplay, I would have been completely satisfied with the bang for my buck.
However, as of right now, this game has itself set up for the greatest DLC content we may have ever seen. There are so many possibilities and directions the game could take with this new outrageous matrix simulation theme. I really, really hope that they take advantage of it and put out some amazing DLC.
I heavily enjoyed this game and am looking forward to more. Removed a few points for the 50 dollar price tag vs. content. Since this game was built directly from the older game that I was able to put 80 hours into, there is unfortunately no excuse that they could not stuff in more content. Other than that, great experience.

Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily and here's why. A game can be is ridiculous as it wants but all it needs especially for saints row is a good story. Yes a lot of things from SR3 and SR2 are recycled but that doesn't but if the gameplay is fun (which it is) and the story is good (which it is) then I'm all for it. Saints Row the Third failed to find a balance between the ridiculous and seriousness that previous games in the series had. Saints Row IV on the other hand balanced those two things in a different way, by amplifying both. There are a lot of nostalgic moments from the previous games (which I loved). So overall I don't understand how people can thing Saints Row 3 is a great game while Saints Row IV essentially improves on everything SR3 did wrong. The biggest question though is if Saints Row IV is just glorified dlc. Like I mentioned, a lot of things are recycled but by no means did I ever feel like I was playing a rehashed game throughout by 11 hour run-through of the main story. I am giving it a 9 out of 10 simply because of how close it came to reaching the great heights that Saints Row 2. I feel that this franchise has really found it's niche in the sandbox world even if the third game sucked (Saints Row 3 6/10). So, I look forward to future adventures with the saints. Expand

The game is ridiculous, it's over the top and it's a little flaky on the storyline front. It's also a lot of fun! With some really great guns and an open world to wreak havoc on, it's a huge disaster sandbox. Yes it's got more nonsensical but it's not trying to win you over with a coherent storyline, it's trying to be fun and in your face. I like it.

But still this has become a fact.

I recommend everyone with a decent sense of humor to play this unlikely masterpiece of endless fun and severe insanity. Preferably together with a like-minded friend in co-op.

I wasn't sure I'd be happy with SRIV given the "it started as an expansion" thing as well as not being a big fan of superhero themes...but so far, I have to admit I'm having a lot of fun. Where SR:TT left me feeling a little listless and bored, SRIV has (so far) been just plain fun. I can't say I've just enjoyed a game like this in quite a while.

Would I have liked a "real" new game?

So, what's the biggest complaint in the negative reviews of Saints Row IV? It's different. It's entirely out of left field, and that's fun. Not everyone wants fun, most people want to retread the same ground, and they hate anything new and original. They're not interested in Saints Row IV because it isn't exactly the same as Saints Row II, and they'll come up with any lacklustre excuse to hide this.

Some people aren't meant to be awesome.

I'm awesome, personally. And I'm having a fantastic time with this game, since it's something novel and a bit different. And it has that elusive quality which many games lack. What quality, you ask? What is this elusive, strange quality which games have been so bereft of, lately?

    Fun.

Saints Row IV is awesome. It's fun.

Not everyone can be fun, and not everyone knows how to appreciate fun. Some people will spend their afternoons grinding away in Call of Duty, and to those poor souls, that'll be "fun," because they have very distorted view of fun. To me, sitting on your arse, grinding through bland, boring levels, finding places to lie down with your sniper rifle to take potshots? That's about as fun as filling out a form, or doing taxes.

Fun is exhilarating, fun is thrilling, fun has you sitting on the edge of your seat. Fun is awesome.

So, if you value fun? If you're awesome? Saints Row IV is for you. Simple as that. Ignore the boring twerps who simply can't handle it, and do try not to become one of them.

This is a game with many references to the popular movies and games (Terminator, MGS, Robocop, Space Invaders, Mass Effact series...). Has a better story than SR3. Technical issues are here too. It's night, all the time, they got rid of the day/night system, and throughout the game it's just nighttime all the time, however, when you finish the campaign you get an option to change the time to whenever you want. While some think it taking place in the same city as the previous game is a bad idea, I think it was the right idea. It gave them more time and resources to spend on other aspects of the game.

They really nailed the effects and shaders, and used them to their advantage. Whether it's the "loading" in of the virtual world, the very subtle pixelation of random characters and objects, or the almost VHS like flicker you can notice buildings have when you look closely at them. It gives off a feeling of being in a simulated world, without shoving it in your face 24/7. Only when it is crucial to the plot will they make it completely obvious, and over the top. It's stuff like this that really makes the game feel polished.

While many of the mission types from 'Saints Row: The Third' did get carried over into 'Saints Row IV', They also added some new, completely different missions. Especially in the main story. There were many times while playing through the main story that I had nearly forgotten that I was playing one game, and not an amalgam of three or four different games blended seamlessly together.

I have to admit, I was a little worried that it might just turn out as an expensive, standalone DLC for the previous game. However, I loved what I saw in the trailers and liked the previous game, so I trusted them. That trust paid off. There was not a single part in the main story where I knew what was going to happen next. It was well written, unique, and enthralling. You identify with both the protagonist (your character) and the antagonist. Some parts made me mad, some made me sad. Mostly, it made me laugh.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone that liked 'Saints Row: The Third' for its absurdity, hilarious character dialogue, ridiculous plot twists, and unique gameplay.

I would not recommend it to anyone who is expecting it to be a serious, more realistic game, not unlike the Grand Theft Auto series. That's just not what The Third Street Saints are about.

I would even go so far as to say that this game does better than any super hero game that has ever been done, and its not even about a mainstream superhero. This game has its moments, and as a fan of the series watching saints row progress more and more into madness was well worth the trip. If you want to play a serious shoot em' up gangster game, than that is what GTA is for and by the looks of it GTA5 is going to be stellar. But if you just want to blow up stuff in creative and new ways and have fun, this is the game for you.

Now there are some downsides to this game. 2 in particular which I will mention that stood out to me. The first is the fact that super powers almost eliminate the use of cars and car customization. This is something the game designers spent a lot of time to improve on and its almost completely rendered useless with the ability to run faster than any car. They should have held off the super powers until later in the game. The second thing is the repetitiveness of the side missions. The side missions were just completing activities around town and it became very boring doing them over and over again.

Over all, with the games downsides and crashing 2 times on me, coupled with everything we love about volition's stellar series made the game totally worth it. I would say this is a must buy and play for anyone into sandbox games, and was a good play all the way through despite being repetitive at times

The game does not take itself seriously at all, and yet, has remarkably high production values; the characters are fully voice acted, Keith David is your vice president, and you can eventually recruit Santa and Mrs. Claus as sidekicks.

The main attraction of this game is its over the top ridiculousness. The game starts out with your character breaking into a nuclear weapons facility to stop an insane general from launching a nuclear weapon and destroying Washington DC, and it only goes downhill from there. The protagonist is a sociopathic street-thug-cum-actor-cum-politician, who puts his ex-street thug friends in charge of the country.

And that’s just the first chapter. After that, aliens invade, everyone gets abducted and stuck into simulations of their worst nightmares – the protagonist gets stuck in a cheerful 50s-themed world – and eventually the protagonist breaks out, breaks into a GTA-themed simulation, and then frees all his friends from similarly ridiculous nightmare scenarios based on everything from fighting a gigantic can of soda to a 2D-beat-em-up to an old-school wireframe video game world. The protagonist gains superpowers over the course of the game, allowing him to completely turn the GTA-themed sandbox on its head, largely ignoring vehicles in favor of running around with super-speed and super-jumps and super-gliding, running up the sides of buildings and bouncing around the city.

The actual gameplay itself is often fairly mediocre; it mostly plays like an over-the-shoulder 3rd person shooter. And yet, the sheer ridiculousness of the scenarios, the constant comedic banter between the protagonist, his teammates, and the enemy, and the general lack of the game taking itself seriously somehow combine to make the game a generally enjoyable experience. The game is at its worst when you are slogging your way through waves of rather uninteresting enemies, but fortunately the protagonist is generally so overpowered after a while that apart from a few missions where you have limited weapons, you can pretty much crush them easily. The actual sandbox aspect of the game is fairly weak; there are a bunch of missions which more or less serve as practice for various bits of the game, as well as challenges which push your ability to complete tasks with various superpowers or weapons or vehicles to the limit, but on the whole most of these are fairly inoffensive, and they aren’t repetitive enough to be annoying.

    So, is it good?

I’d say on the whole that it was an enjoyable experience; while the gameplay may not have been the best, the sheer chutzpah of the game actually made it pretty fun, and you never knew what ridiculous task you’d be up to next. The game does its best to make you feel powerful, and the game is, in the end, a power fantasy, an ego trip, and a comedy all wrapped up into one. It doesn’t take itself seriously, and neither should you, but on the whole, it was well worth it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just to make things clear, I want to point out that I wasn't a huge fun of Saint's Row The Third, even more so, I hated it. I didn't liked what Volition did with Saint's Row franchise. Even though i didn't like previous installment of SR, I have decided to pick up this game and review it.

I wasn't expecting gangster-type Saint's Row when I bought this but I had a big expectations from this game and I have got to say I wasn't disappointed. Firstly, you start the game as a president of the United States which is a clever idea and it got me thinking, what are they going to come up with next year, will you be playing as God? anyway let's get to the point. You start the game as a president and of course Aliens invaded the Earth and then destroyed it, yes, you read this well, Aliens have destroyed our planet, just like that. Only some gang members have survived including, Pierce, Shaundi, Johny Gat and others, so now it is your mission to get out of the simulation and defeat Zinyak( Leader of the Aliens).

For some reason Zinyak, doesn't want to kill you, in fact he transforms you into this simulation(clear spoof of Matrix) and what is funny is the fact that he allows you to have superpowers and i have got to say superpowers are the most fun thing to have in the game. Instead of travelling by car you can just run around or fly around which is extremely convenient and fun but there are also some problems that I have with them. If you have ability to fly and super sprint through the town you won't be using cars, AT ALL which is a shame because the developers have improved vehicle customization and with your superpowers these improved aspects of customization are useless.

Let's get to the story, I actually really liked it. It was funny, full of sexual jokes and some great references from the other Saint's Row games. Even at one point you get to visit Stillwater and fight some bosses from previous games. Although I did had some problems with side missions, some of them were ok, especially the Super Homie missions, but others were repetitive, ''go to point a, fight some aliens and then go to point B'' type of missions but I had to complete them because I really wanted to get my hands on Dubstep Gun, Black Hole Gun and other really hilarious ones. As for the story, I don't want to spoil anything but I really hated the last boss fight with Zinyak. It was cheap and frustrating, I expected something more... fun I might say but overall the story was hilarious.

Furthermore, I did had some fun playing minigames although some of them weren't as good as other. In my opinion the best minigames are Insurance Fraud(of course) and Mech Mayhem. Text Adventures were fun as well. Other minigames were...well...acceptable.

Lastly, Saint's Row 4 offers us a decent but hilarious story, good character customization and of course superpowers. You will definitely have a lot of fun with this game especially if you could convince your friend to play it with you. But I'm a bit sad that the car customization is pretty much useless just because your superpowers, It would be better if the developers gave you the superpowers after you finish the game or after 50% completion, but this is just my opinion. Besides, If you didn't liked the previous Saint's Row, you should really give it a try and If you are a huge fan of Saint's Row 1 and 2, you might be a bit disappointed by the lack of seriousness.

I have to say I was a little bit skeptical at first. I loved Saints Row 2, but Saints Row the Thrid a lot less. So when I learned that Saints Row IV would have Aliens and superpowers, I thought "Mmh. They've really gone too far."

    But I was wrong.

Saints Row IV manages to beat the Third in almost every domain. The jokes are way more clever, the story is much stronger and the good radio stations are back with an incredibly good soundtrack. The universe they built here allowed the developers to be really creative with the activities, level design, weapons and storyline.

I was afraid of what they were going to do with this "simulation", but they managed to create pretty funny situations and throwbacks at Saints 2 and the Third.

On the downside, your homies don't feel as charismatic as they were, and we're still a few steps away from Saints Row 2's quality storytelling. And with a universe this huge and varied, you will eventually have a game crash and/or a few glitches in-game. Some activities can also become tedious pretty quickly cough*hacking*cough.

To conclude, this game is just too much fun to pass on, especially if you're a Saints fan. Whether you enjoyed the second or the third game better, you are sure to have a LOT of fun playing this adrenaline-boosted, over-the-top, all-guns-blazing adventure Volition did a really great job with that fourth episode.

Of corse there are glitches, but they are just too funny, and by the course of the game, you will notice they are there because the creator wants it.
The aliens, the enemy gangs of old steelport, everything, that brings even Johnny Gat is back, so, as you can see, there is nothing bad abaut this game
The games defenitively deserves at least a 100 out of 100 and it really deserves you to play it, with or without wanting it

This is easily on the top ten games I have ever played. Is there things they could have improved in this game? Yep. Is it in the same vain as SR or SR2? Nope. Is it basically the best superhero game ever made? Yep.

If your wanting the GTA clone that SR/SR2 was this not the game for you. If you looking for a fun game where you play a super powered character with great writing get this!

If you're not expecting something very deep or thought-provoking akin to the Last of Us or the Walking dead, this is one way or another a very good game. This game obviously knows it's ridiculous, but it also knows how to bank on it and take advantage of this. It's not to be taken as something like GTA. It's open-world, yes, and that's about where the similarities end. It's a game perfectly capable of standing on it's own, which is also why this could not be a DLC; the story line is too long, there are too many abilities and too much time and power put into making this game that it could be justified as a DLC.

May be this is really a DLC, not a whole new game. But it's definitely worth what it costs.
Gameplay went far from original game. Now it's something like Prototype or Infamous, and it plays even better than this two.

Saint's Row 4 is essentially more of the same, with parody and satire and humor that somehow mixes the lowbrow with the high in a perfect combination. The more video games you've played, the more you'll get out of it, with the almost neverending references scattered throughout.

If there was one thing that I found to be not quite excellent, it was the having to harvest the nodes to improve your superpowers. In a game that's always been all about balls to the walls fun, this aspect seemed like nothing more than a boring grind, especially since the damn things were on every other rooftop, which almost compels you to grind them, whereas if they had been a lot rarer, it might have been something obtained a lot more organically while playing the game.

The voice acting was excellent, again. I play the female version, and Laura Bailey continues to nail everything without overacting. I know Jennifer Hale gets all the voice actress press due to her high profile with the Bioware games, but I've always thought Laura Bailey to be the best voice actress in the business (I think Hale tends to overact-ie: female Shepard, but is great when she doesn't feel like she has to).

The only other downer is that, as far as I know, this was the last of the franchise. I do hope we see someone else make a quality game that is obviously having a lot of fun with itself in the future. So many games take themselves super seriously (not that there's anything wrong with that), and it's nice to play a AAA game that doesn't (and doesn't suck as a result).

The fourth part in the Saints Row saga is an outrageous, silly and incredibly entertaining adventure. The days of Grand Theft Auto is since long gone and the game reminds you rather of the super hero games Crackdown and Infamous. An unexpected but welcome change.
